The management of bone repair in patients with osteoporosis depends on the clinical situation and the extent of the damage. The repair of bone lesions by inducing new bone formation is important for maintaining bone architecture and density. Herein, we reported the use of Cobalt Chromium Molybdenum (CoCrMo) implants in osteoporotic rabbits and the regenerative outcomes in vivo. The aim was to determine whether the placement of CoCrMo plates would induce qualitative and quantitative differences in the osteoporotic tissue beneath and surrounding the implant. We assessed the effect of the alloy in the bone of animals receiving implants for 4 and 8 weeks and compared the results to those of the osteoporotic non-implanted bone and the healthy controls. After 4 weeks, minimal histological changes were observed, whereas after 8 weeks a marked osteogenesis was evident with both apposition and substitution of new bone. In addition, a greater number of Haversian canals with increased canal area and decreased intracortical pores were observed in the implanted vs non implanted limb for both experimental groups. We show for the first time that the use of CrCoMo plates induces bone formation under osteoporotic conditions. The beneficial effect is localised on the cortical bone in areas in contact with the material. Although this effect may not directly influence the OP disease itself, it has direct implications for new bone formation adjacent to the biomaterial. This potential enhancement could play a crucial role in improving implant fixation in compromised bone, offering increased biocompatibility and stability.

Objective: In Ecuador, data on molecular epidemiology, as well as circulating clones, are limited. Therefore, this study aims to know the population structure of Pseudomonas aeruginosa by identifying clones in clinical samples in Quito-Ecuador. Methods: A significant set (45) clinical P. aeruginosa isolates were selected, including multidrug and non-multidrug resistant isolates, which were assigned to sequence types (STs) and compared with their antibiotic susceptibility profile. The genetic diversity was assessed by applying the multilocus sequence typing (MLST) scheme and the genetic relationships between different STs were corroborated by phylogenetic networks. Results: The MLST analysis identified 24 different STs and the most prevalent STs were ST-3750 and ST-253. The majority of the multidrug-resistance (MDR) isolates were included in ST-3750 and ST-253, also 3 singleton STs were identified as MDR isolates. The 21 different STs were found in non-multidrug resistance (non-MDR) isolates, and only 3 STs were found in more the one isolate. Conclusions: The population structure of clinical P. aeruginosa present in these isolates indicates a significant association between MDR isolates and the clonal types: all ST-3750 and ST-253 isolates were MDR. ST-3750 is a closely related strain to the clonal complex ST111 (CC111). ST-253 and ST111 are a group of successful high-risk clones widely distributed worldwide. The multiresistant isolates studied are grouped in the most prevalent STs found, and the susceptible isolates correspond mainly with singleton STs. Therefore, these high-risk clones and their association with MDR phenotypes are contributing to the spread of MDR in Quito, Ecuador.

How to review the scope of brain migration studies. ,Science - Abstract
Research on advanced human capital migration has focused on the constructs: brain drain, brain gain and brain circulation (grouped as brain migration). The behavior of brain drainers and their migration flow is affected by perceived well-being. Our study comprehensively reviews research on the well-being of highly skilled migrants in search of the constructs and classes with which well-being in brain migration is studied. Research published in the WoSCC and Scopus databases was reviewed. Subsequently, a scoping review of the literature with the PRISMA – ScR guidelines, reporting information sources and search strategy, eligibility criteria (PICOS tool), mode of study selection and data extraction, and ways to assess quality, control bias, and synthesize results. Finally, nine papers were selected, with three types of populations analyzed and two epistemic-methodological approaches: 1) the effects of roots at origin, the ethical and moral dilemmas of the brain drain and the possibilities of return on the well-being of highly qualified emigrants, and 2) identification of the business, economic and political aspects of the destination country that condition individual well-being, adaptation and permanence. Future lines of research will focus on both categories and evaluate their effects on brain migration, and on the origin and destination countries.

THE RIVALRY BETWEEN ALGERIA AND MOROCCO. AN ANALYSIS OF THE EFFECTS OF THE BREAKDOWN OF DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS IN 2021 The rupture of diplomatic relations in August 2021 between Algeria and Morocco, against the backdrop of Western Sahara, represents the biggest crisis since their independence, in a bilateral context marked by unresolved territorial issues and the escalation of geopolitical rivalry in regional scenarios. Despite the increase in hostilities, these actors have been exercising a difficult controlled gear that allows them to navigate both cyclical and permanent conflicts in the face of the inability of either side to dominate. Objectives: Chronic Rhinosinusitis with Nasal Polyposis (CRSwNP) is a disease characterized by chronic inflammation and tissue remodeling process. The remodeling process in nasal polyps has mainly been studied by histology analysis. However, it is limited to a polyp fragment and requires tissue removal. The present study aims to evaluate the ability of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) to depict and characterize the remodeling process in patients with CRSwNP. Methods: 30 patients that met clinical diagnostic criteria for CRSwNP, without previous history of rhinosinusitis surgery were submitted to MRI scan (conventional, diffusion-weighted and DCE MRI) and compared with polyp tissue histological findings, IL-6 concentrations in the tissue and eosinophil count in the blood. The examinations were evaluated, independently, by two radiologists blinded to other radiological and histological data. The pathologist, blinded to MRI results, also compared the tissue sample from the most central and the most peripheral portion of the polypoid tissue adjacent to the floor of the nasal fossa. Results: This study demonstrated a characteristic pattern of nasal polyps, whose peripheral portions of nasal polypoid tissue are edematous, whereas the central portions in the middle meatus and in the middle and upper ethmoid are predominantly fibrotic. ADC values found in the most anterior portion of the polyps may be a marker for radiological phenotyping the remodeling process. This non-invasive analysis presented a high degree of agreement in the fibrosis and edema rating by two radiologists and the histological analysis was concordant with the MRI findings. The polyps were characterized as eosinophilic, and no relationship was found between the severity of the eosinophilic inflammatory process or concentration of IL-6 and the remodeling process. Conclusion: MRI by using T2-weighted imaging sequence and ADCs values allows tissue characterization and is an effective tool for the differentiation of edematous and fibrotic components in CRSwNP. Level of evidence: 3.

- Abstract
The current social and educational challenges force us to rethink the role of educational institutions and digital technologies in the 21st century, which requires a deeper understanding of learning activities in schools. In this article we analyze bottom-up initiatives for educational transformation implemented in public lower secondary schools from Norway, Chile and Spain that involved 230 students and 14 teachers. Three ethnographic case studies were carried out, using individual interviews, focus groups, participant observations and document analysis in six schools. The main goal was to deeply understand how bottom-up school initiatives, with a comprehensive use of digital technologies, are contributing to generate connected practices and to involve teachers, learners and communities in the discussion about what kind of society they want in their future. The results of the analysis indicate that fostering a transformative agency in secondary schools has the potential of engaging students in the exploration of contemporary social issues and that digital connectedness can contribute to connect schools with youth life trajectories and communities. This study on transformative agency and digital connectedness reveals a new path for educational transformation that may interest everybody who, in one way or another, are involved in education systems all around the world.

Abstract Aim Characterize cyanobacterial accumulations detected for the first time from November 2020 to February 2022 along the coastal zone of the Paraná River and in the Zaimán and Mártires streams in Posadas (Misiones, Argentina), by identifying the dominant species, determining their potential toxicity, and monitoring their progression using satellite images. Methods This work analyzes the presence of cyanobacteria by optical microscopy, the production of microcystin (MCY) by molecular and analytical methods, and the detection of these cyanobacterial accumulations by satellite image analysis. Results Optical microscopy analysis revealed the presence of Microcystis spp. colonies in all collected samples and Dolichospermum sp. in the Mártires stream. Using PCR amplification of a conserved region of the mcyE gene we confirmed the presence of MCY-encoding genes in all samples and MCY in the Zaimán stream using UPLC MS/MS analysis. Complementary satellite image analysis showed blooms in the Zaimán and Mártires streams were detectable during all the sampling periods. The presence of Microcystis spp., and MCY could affect the population, as well as the flora and fauna in the streams and the ecosystems along the Paraná River basin. Conclusions In this study, we successfully characterized cyanobacterial accumulations along the Paraná River coast and in the Zaimán and Mártires streams, revealing the presence of Microcystis spp. colonies and MCY-encoding genes, with potential implications for local populations and ecosystems.

The fossil-diagenetic characteristics, such as mineralogical aspects present in the ribs of Catonyx cuvieri (Lund, 1839) (Mammalia, Xenarthra), were analyzed in this work. These analyzed remains come from the Risso Cave, San Lazaro's District, Concepción Department, Paraguay. The vibrational response was studied using Raman and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and the mineralogy and elemental compositions were examined using multiple characterizations techniques. The main functional groups belong to the mineral part of the bone, and specific functional groups were associated with organic components. The characterization indicated that material was composed of apatites and the original mineral structure was affected by partial ionic substitutions, probably due to the interaction of the fossil with the environment. A Gaussian deconvolution model (GM) was used to identify the individual overlapping bands in the regions of interest in the spectra. A diagenesis pathway for the fossil involved the inclusion of calcium carbonate on the surface of the bone due to the accumulation of moisture, which allowed the recrystallization of hydroxyapatite and the precipitation of calcite in the pores and silicates of the bone. It’s worth mentioning that this work is the first in the ground sloths C. cuvieri in South America. In addition, the material here constitutes the most complete fossil record of a member of the Pleistocene megafaunal of Paraguay.

Introduction: Integrating genetic data into conservation management decisions is a challenging task that requires strong partnerships between researchers and managers. Conservation in Latin America is of crucial relevance worldwide given the high biodiversity levels and the presence of hotspots in this region. Methods: We conducted a survey across Latin America to identify gaps and opportunities between genetic researchers and conservation managers. We aimed to better understand conservation managers’ points of view and how genetic research could help conservation practitioners to achieve their goals, by implementing genetic assessments that could effectively inform conservation practices. We distributed an online survey via four regional collaborating organizations and 32 focal points based in 20 Latin American countries. The target respondents were conservation managers of species or areas in Latin America. Results: We collected a total of 468 answered questionnaires from 21 Latin American countries. Most respondents (44%) were from an academic or research institution while non-academics were mainly from non-governmental institutions (30%) and government agencies (25%). Most respondents (65%) have performed or used genetic assessments in their managed area or species, either alone, in partnership, contracting someone else or using published results. For the majority of this group, the genetic results were relevant to their conservation management goals, helping to inform management decisions. Respondents that had not performed genetic assessments (35%) were mainly from the non-academic group, and their main barriers were limited access to funds, genetic lab facilities, and trained personnel to design studies and conduct lab work.Discussion: From the findings, we describe the current situation and provide a general diagnosis of the conservation-genetics gap in Latin America. We describe the gender gap, academic-practitioner co-development of conservation questions and projects, and the nationality and residency of Latin American conservation managers in relation to the countries where they work. We discuss opportunities to co-create research questions and co-develop studies based on conservation practitioners’ needs. We offer recommendations for overcoming barriers to integrate genetic information into conservation actions, and advance agendas that fit the needs and realities of the highly heterogeneous, biodiverse and challenging Latin American region.

General Works - Abstract
