This data set is digital image correlation data, including surface displacement and strain data from laboratory subduction megathrust earthquake cycles. The data consists of grids of surface strain (elastic and permanent), trench-normal surface displacement, vorticity and divergence maps over analog seismic cycles, and time series of surface displacement. The data have been derived using a stereo camera setup and processed with LaVision Davis 10 software. Detailed descriptions of the experiments and results regarding the surface pattern of the strain can be found in Kosari et al. (2023), to which this data set is supplementary. We use three configurations to mimic the along-strike heterogeneous spatiotemporal distribution of frictional locking (Rosenau et al., 2019; Kosari et al., 2022b). A central patch separates two stick-slip zones as an aseismic barrier in all configurations. The frictional properties of the central patch vary as a velocity-strengthening (VS configuration), a velocity-neutral (VN), and a velocity-weakening (VW configuration). The VW zone generates smaller slip events with a higher frequency (i.e., recurrence interval) than the stick-slip zones. Four frictionally different materials have been emplaced on the interface: The sticky-rice as velocity-weakening material (a-blt;0) resulting in stick-slip cycles simulating earthquake cycles, fine-grained sugar and rubber-sand mixture as velocity-strengthening (a-bgt;0) and velocity-neutral (a-b=0) material, and fine-grained salt as velocity-weakening material (a-blt;0) (Kosari et al., 2023).

Background: Diffuse-type tenosynovial giant cell tumour (D-TGCT) is a nonmalignant but locally aggressive tumour driven by overexpression of colony-stimulating factor-1 (CSF1). CSF1R inhibitors are potential therapeutic strategies for patients not amenable to surgery. We report here the long-term outcome of nilotinib in patients with advanced D-TGCT treated within a phase II prospective international study (ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT01261429). Methods: Patients were enrolled between December 2010-September 2012 at 11 cancer centres. Eligible patients had histologically confirmed D-TGCT, not amenable to surgery. Patients received nilotinib until evidence of progression, toxicity or a maximum of one year. Long-term data were retrospectively collected after the completion of the phase II trial. Patients with nilotinib treatment >= 12 weeks and follow-up >= 12 months were included for long-term analysis. Results: Forty-eight of 56 enrolled patients were included. Median treatment duration was 11 months; 31 (65%) patients completed the treatment protocol. After 102 months of follow-up (median; range 12-129), 25 patients (52%) had progression. The median progression-free survival (PFS) was 77 months. The five-year PFS rate was 53%. Fifteen patients (n=15/46; 33%) experienced clinical worsening after 11 months (median). Twenty-seven patients (58%) received additional treatment, after which eleven patients (n = 11/27; 41%) had a second relapse. Nine patients required a subsequent treatment, primarily other CSF1R inhibitors (n = 6/9; 67%). No unfavourable long-term effects were observed. Conclusion: This long-term analysis of nilotinib for advanced D-TGCT showed that about half of the patients had progression and underwent additional treatment after 8.5 years follow-up. Contrarily, several patients had ongoing disease control after limited treatment duration, demonstrating the mixed effect of nilotinib.

Despite the importance of surface energy budgets (SEBs) for land-climate interactions in the Arctic, uncertainties in their prediction persist. In situ observational data of SEB components - useful for research and model validation - are collected at relatively few sites across the terrestrial Arctic, and not all available datasets are readily interoperable. Furthermore, the terrestrial Arctic consists of a diversity of vegetation types, which are generally not well represented in land surface schemes of current Earth system models. This dataset describes the environmental conditions for 64 tundra and glacier sites (>=60°N latitude) across the Arctic, for which in situ measurements of surface energy budget components were harmonized (see Oehri et al. 2022). These environmental conditions are (proxies of) potential drivers of SEB-components and could therefore be called SEB-drivers. The associated environmental conditions, include the vegetation types graminoid tundra, prostrate dwarf-shrub tundra, erect-shrub tundra, wetland complexes, barren complexes (≤ 40% horizontal plant cover), boreal peat bogs and glacier. These land surface types (apart from boreal peat bogs) correspond to the main classification units of the Circumpolar Arctic Vegetation Map (CAVM, Raynolds et al. 2019). For each site, additional climatic and biophysical variables are available, including cloud cover, snow cover duration, permafrost characteristics, climatic conditions and topographic conditions.

This dataset comprises harmonized, standardized and aggregated in-situ observations of surface energy budget components measured at 64 sites on vegetated and glaciated sites north of 60° latitude, in the time period from 1994 till 2021. The surface energy budget components include net radiation, sensible heat flux, latent heat flux, ground heat flux, net shortwave radiation, net longwave radiation, surface temperature and albedo, which were aggregated to daily mean, minimum and maximum values from hourly and half-hourly measurements. Data were retrieved from the monitoring networks FLUXNET, AmeriFlux, AON, GC-Net and PROMICE.

A description of all study sites and associated environmental conditions, including the vegetation types, which correspond to the classification of the Circumpolar Arctic Vegetation Map (CAVM, Raynolds et al. 2019). 3. Data generated in a literature synthesis from 358 study sites on vegetation or glacier (>=60°N latitude) covered by 148 publications. 4. Metadata, including data contributor information and measurement heights of variables associated with Oehri et al. 2022.

We have installed 19 new Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) markers in the Hindu Kush (NE-Afghanistan) and the North Pamir front (Alai valley) and measured a total of 25 new and existing markers, if possible annually between 2014 and 2020 in survey mode. The stations are positioned along three profiles crossing the NE-striking Panjsheer fault and N-striking Badakhshan fault in the Hindu Kush, and the E-striking Pamir thrust system at the Trans Alai Range. The Hindu Kush survey data are the first of their kind in Afghanistan. The Pamir profile densifies a 1 Hz-GNSS profile that was installed in the Altyndara valley in 2013-2015; the GNSS time-series are affected by the 2015 Mw7.2 Sarez, Central Pamir, earthquake and probably the 2016 Mw6.4 Sary-Tash earthquake. The data are presented in receiver independent exchange (RNX) format and complemented by logsheets, field photos and a technical report describing the surveys in more detail.

International audience; Purpose/Objective The overall survival (OS) of patients (pts) with non-resectable locally advanced non-small cell lung carcinoma (LA-NSCLC) is poor, in part due to insufficient local control (LC) using conformal irradiation techniques (RT). The personalization of the RT margins may impact the LC and the outcome. Internal Target Volume strategy (ITV) versus "Mid-position" strategy (Mid-p), was compared in a prospective non-comparative randomized monocentric phase II trial in NSCLC patients treated by definitive radiotherapy. Planning Target volumes and mean lung dose were previously reported as significantly reduced using the Mid-p strategy (DOI: 10.1259/bjr.20190692). We report here the clinical results. Material and Methods Eligible patients were randomized (2:1) to be treated with Mid-p or ITV strategies. Patients with proven LA-NSCLC, non-resected, non-metastatic treated by definitive RT could be included. The main objective was to evaluate the 1-year progression-free-survival (PFS) rate in the two arms. 36 pts were planned in the Mid-p arm, Fleming single-stage design (1-sided =0.1, 80% power, P0=30%, P1=50%). Secondary objectives were to evaluate 1-y and 2-y LC, OS and acute/middle term toxicity (NCI-CTCAE v4).Results 54 pts were randomized from 09/12 to 05/18. 3 patients finally did not receive radiotherapy and were excluded from the analysis. Median age was 65.2 y, 2/3 of the patients were male and had IIIA NSCLC stages, 31% received concomitant chemotherapy. 34 pts and 17 pts were included in the analysis in the Mid-p arm and ITV arm respectively. Median RT dose was 66 Gy in the Mid-p arm and 62 Gy in the ITV arm. Median PFS were 9.3 months and 10.3 months in the Mid-p arm and ITV arms respectively. 1-year PFS rate were 38% (1-sided CI95% = 25-) and 47% (CI95% = [27;[) in the Mid-p/ITV arm respectively. Efficacy in Mid-p arm is below that expected (starting hypothesis p0=30%, p1=50%). 2-year PFS rates were 15% (Mid-p) and 12% (ITV). 2-years LC rates were 65% (CI95% [48;81]) and 76% (CI95% [53;94]) in the Mid-p/ITV arms respectively. The analysis of the type of local failures (in field versus border of fields) is under analysis and will be available for the congress.No grade 4 or toxic deaths related to RT were reported. Grade 3 acute lung toxicity were reported in 12% and 23% in Mid-p and in ITV arms respectively. Grade 2 and Grade 3 late radiation fibrosis were reported in 29% and 15% respectively in the Mid-p arm, versus 23% and 29% using ITV strategy. Conclusion Two-year LC and PFS in LA-NSCLC seems similar in this non comparative Phase II randomized study using Mid-p or ITV strategies. Interferometric East and Up rate maps based on time-series analysis of ~5 years of Sentinel-1 radar data provide an unprecedented spatial (~400 m) resolution of the recend surface deformation of the Tajik fold-and-thrust-belt and the greater Pamir area. Among other the data exhibit E-W shortening in the fold-thrust-belt, slip activity of the Babadag thrust fault and the Ilyak strike-slip fault, westward Pamir escape tectonics, halokinesis and near-surface, water-driven effects. Observations and methodology are discussed at length in Metzger et al., 2021 (under Review). The zip-folder contains 1) the framewise rates and uncertainties and corresponding line-of-sight (LOS) information, all labelled by frame numbers, 2) the interpolated north rates based on Eurasian-fixed GNSS and 3) the concatenated and decomposed east and up rates in a Eurasian-fixed reference frame. A GMT script (Wessel & Smith, 2013, v6.0.0) and corresponding Figures serve as an example on how to plot the data.

We have installed 20 new Global Positioning System (GPS) markers in the West Pamir and the Tajik Depression and measured 25 markers once a year between 2013 and 2016 in survey mode. The stations are positioned along two dense NW-SE oriented profiles with an average spacing of 5-10 km. The profiles cross the Darvaz and the Vakhsh/Ilyak fault and thus monitor the recent slip of these two profiles, which are expected to accommodate the gravity-driven westward extrusion of the West Pamir into the Tajik Depression. Some of the stations include millimeter to centimeter offsets potentially caused by the 2015 Mw7.2 Sarez, Pamir, earthquake.

The purpose of Work Package 2 is to address and overcome central algorithmic core problems in the realm of energy meteorology. The goals of the task are to: Further develop methodologies for optimal operation under uncertainty and for the first time apply these to renewable energy. Demonstrate the effect of uncertainty on optimal operation, thus setting the goals for accurately characterizing the uncertainty. Compare state-of-the-art weather prediction at the local scale with the ones developed, demonstrating the additional value.

Extreme hydrometeorological conditions typically impact ecophysiological processes on land. Satellite-based observations of the terrestrial biosphere provide an important reference for detecting and describing the spatiotemporal development of such events. However, in-depth investigations of ecological processes during extreme events require additional in situ observations. The question is whether the density of existing ecological in situ networks is sufficient for analysing the impact of extreme events, and what are expected event detection rates of ecological in situ networks of a given size. To assess these issues, we build a baseline of extreme reductions in the fraction of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (FAPAR), identified by a new event detection method tailored to identify extremes of regional relevance. We then investigate the event detection success rates of hypothetical networks of varying sizes. Our results show that large extremes can be reliably detected with relatively small networks, but also reveal a linear decay of detection probabilities towards smaller extreme events in log–log space. For instance, networks with ≈ 100 randomly placed sites in Europe yield a ≥ 90 % chance of detecting the eight largest (typically very large) extreme events; but only a ≥ 50 % chance of capturing the 39 largest events. These findings are consistent with probability-theoretic considerations, but the slopes of the decay rates deviate due to temporal autocorrelation and the exact implementation of the extreme event detection algorithm. Using the examples of AmeriFlux and NEON, we then investigate to what degree ecological in situ networks can capture extreme events of a given size. Consistent with our theoretical considerations, we find that today's systematically designed networks (i.e. NEON) reliably detect the largest extremes, but that the extreme event detection rates are not higher than would be achieved by randomly designed networks. Spatio-temporal expansions of ecological in situ monitoring networks should carefully consider the size distribution characteristics of extreme events if the aim is also to monitor the impacts of such events in the terrestrial biosphere. The goal of this study is to characterize the sensible (H) and latent (LE) heat exchange for different land covers in the heterogeneous steppe landscape of the Xilin River catchment, Inner Mongolia, China. Eddy-covariance flux measurements at 50–100 m above ground were conducted in July 2009 using a weight-shift microlight aircraft. Wavelet decomposition of the turbulence data enables a spatial discretization of 90 m of the flux measurements. For a total of 8446 flux observations during 12 flights, MODIS land surface temperature (LST) and enhanced vegetation index (EVI) in each flux footprint are determined. Boosted regression trees are then used to infer an environmental response function (ERF) between all flux observations (H, LE) and biophysical (LST, EVI) and meteorological drivers. Numerical tests show that ERF predictions covering the entire Xilin River catchment (&approx;3670 km2) are accurate to ≤18% (1 σ). The predictions are then summarized for each land cover type, providing individual estimates of source strength (36 W m−2 < H < 364 W m−2, 46 W m−2 < LE < 425 W m−2) and spatial variability (11 W m−2 < σH < 169 W m−2, 14 W m−2 < σLE < 152 W m−2) to a precision of ≤5%. Lastly, ERF predictions of land cover specific Bowen ratios are compared between subsequent flights at different locations in the Xilin River catchment. Agreement of the land cover specific Bowen ratios to within 12 &pm; 9% emphasizes the robustness of the presented approach. This study indicates the potential of ERFs for (i) extending airborne flux measurements to the catchment scale, (ii) assessing the spatial representativeness of long-term tower flux measurements, and (iii) designing, constraining and evaluating flux algorithms for remote sensing and numerical modelling applications.

Among other regions of the world, the Arctic is strongly affected by climate change. Globally, it is the region with the most pronounced warming, leading to permafrost warming and thawing. Part of the 1,300 Pg soil organic carbon currently stored in the frozen ground is already and might be further released as carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4). CO2 is released through aerobic soil respiration and from plant roots, but also sequestered through photosynthesis. CH4 emission can be attributed to either recent microbial activity or to past microbial or thermal decomposition and is spatially heterogeneous. To our knowledge, regional assessments of the total carbon flux (CO2 and CH4) based on high frequency airborne measurements do not exist. Here we determine the regional pattern of CO2 and total carbon emissions (CO2 + CH4) of the Mackenzie Delta region, Canada, based on the Airborne Measurements of Methane Fluxes Campaign (AIRMETH) in July 2013 [Kohnert et al., 2014]. The Mackenzie Delta is the second largest arctic delta (13,000 km2). Our measurements covered an area extending 320 km from west to east (140°58’ W to 133°22’W) and of 240 km from north to south (69°33’N to 67°26’N). The study area is heterogeneous and comprises the delta itself, the adjacent Yukon coastal plain, and Richards Island north east of the delta. Part of the delta is located north of the treeline. The area surrounding the delta is described as continuous permafrost zone where the permafrost reaches a thickness of 300 m along the coastal plain and 500 m on Richards Island. In the delta itself the discontinuous permafrost reaches a maximum thickness of 100 m. For the AIRMETH campaign we used the research aircraft Polar 5. Equipped with a 5-hole probe, the usual meteorological sensors, and a fast greenhouse gas analyser (GGA 24EP, Los Gatos Research Inc.) we flew at 30 - 60 m above ground at a true airspeed of 60 m s−1. CO2 and CH4 fluxes were calculated with a timefrequency resolved version of the eddy-covariance technique [Metzger et al., 2013]. We calculated flux topographies [Mauder et al., 2008] to resolve the fluxes along a linear flight track to the area within the footprint of the measurements. The result is a 100 m resolved gridded carbon flux map within the footprints of the flight tracks. Based on the flux topographies we produce a map of the regional pattern of peak growing season carbon fluxes.

The cause of Huntington disease (HD) is a polyglutamine repeat expansion of more than 36 units in the huntingtin protein, which is inversely correlated with the age at onset of the disease. However, additional genetic factors are believed to modify the course and the age at onset of HD. Recently, we identified the V471A polymorphism in the autophagy-related gene ATG7, a key component of the autophagy pathway that plays an important role in HD pathogenesis, to be associated with the age at onset in a large group of European Huntington disease patients. To confirm this association in a second independent patient cohort, we analysed the ATG7 V471A polymorphism in additional 1,464 European HD patients of the “REGISTRY” cohort from the European Huntington Disease Network (EHDN). In the entire REGISTRY cohort we could not confirm a modifying effect of the ATG7 V471A polymorphism. However, analysing a modifying effect of ATG7 in these REGISTRY patients and in patients of our previous HD cohort according to their ethnic origin, we identified a significant effect of the ATG7 V471A polymorphism on the HD age at onset only in the Italian population (327 patients). In these Italian patients, the polymorphism is associated with a 6-years earlier disease onset and thus seems to have an aggravating effect. We could specify the role of ATG7 as a genetic modifier for HD particularly in the Italian population. This result affirms the modifying influence of the autophagic pathway on the course of HD, but also suggests population-specific modifying mechanisms in HD pathogenesis.

Climate and weather conditions, such as the North Atlantic Oscillation, precipitation and temperature influence the birth sex ratio (BSR) of various higher latitude species, including deer, elephant seals or northern human populations. Although, tropical regions show only little variation in temperature, climate and weather conditions can fluctuate with consequences for phenology and food resource availability. Here, we evaluate, whether the BSR of chimpanzees, inhabiting African tropical forests, is affected by climate fluctuations as well. Additionally, we evaluate, if variation in consumption of a key food resource with high nutritional value, Coula edulis nuts, is linked to both climate fluctuations and variation in BSR. We use long-term data from two study groups located in Taï National Park, Côte d'Ivoire to assess the influence of local weather conditions and the global climate driver El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on offspring sex. Côte d'Ivoire has experienced considerable climate variation over the last decades, with increasing temperature and declining precipitation. For both groups we find very similar time windows around the month of conception, in which offspring sex is well predicted by ENSO, with more males following low ENSO values, corresponding to periods of high rainfall. Furthermore, we find that the time spent cracking and feeding on Coula nuts is strongly influenced by climate conditions. Although, some of our analysis suggest that a higher proportion of males is born after periods with higher nut consumption frequency, we cannot conclude decisively at this point that nut consumption may influence shifts in BSR. All results combined suggest that also chimpanzees may experience climate related shifts in offspring sex ratios as response to climate fluctuation.

International audience; Ammonium-nitrate aerosols are expected to become more important in the future atmosphere due to the expected increase in nitrate precursor emissions and the decline of ammonium-sulphate aerosols in wide regions of this planet. The GISS climate model is used in this study, including atmospheric gas- and aerosol phase chemistry to investigate current and future (2030, following the SRES A1B emission scenario) atmospheric compositions. A set of sensitivity experiments was carried out to quantify the individual impact of emission- and physical climate change on nitrate aerosol formation. We found that future nitrate aerosol loads depend most strongly on changes that may occur in the ammonia sources. Furthermore, microphysical processes that lead to aerosol mixing play a very important role in sulphate and nitrate aerosol formation. The role of nitrate aerosols as climate change driver is analyzed and set in perspective to other aerosol and ozone forcings under pre-industrial, present day and future conditions. In the near future, year 2030, ammonium nitrate radiative forcing is about ?0.14 W/m2 and contributes roughly 10% of the net aerosol and ozone forcing. The present day nitrate and pre-industrial nitrate forcings are ?0.11 and ?0.05 W/m2, respectively. The steady increase of nitrate aerosols since industrialization increases its role as a non greenhouse gas forcing agent. However, this impact is still small compared to greenhouse gas forcings, therefore the main role nitrate will play in the future atmosphere is as an air pollutant, with annual mean near surface air concentrations rising above 3 ?g/m3 in China and therefore reaching pollution levels, like sulphate aerosols, in the fine particle mode.

We present results from the first high-resolution near-surface profiles conducted on dust devil wind fields. These results are integrated with extensive geologic mapping to understand the factors that influence vortex generation and erosive efficacy.
