Introduction: Ovarian torsion can occur at any pediatric age, mainly between the ages of 9 and 14 years. Diagnosis is challenging, as symptoms are nonspecific, misleading to other more common diagnoses, as genitourinary and gastrointestinal disorders. In children, ovarian lesions leading to torsion are typically benign and cystic. Surgical approach is safe, as most cases of early torsed ovary untwisting exhibit later normal ovarian function.Case report: A 13-year-old female adolescent was referred to the Emergency Department for vomiting, left low back pain, and diffuse abdominal pain with irradiation to the hypogastric area, associated with urinary symptoms. Abdomen was tender in the right iliac fossa and hypogastric area. Analytical study revealed increased inflammatory parameters, urinary test strip was negative, and pelvic computed tomography showed a cystic lesion of ovarian origin. Due to suspicion of cyst torsion, laparoscopic surgery was performed, revealing a necrotic adnexal torsion requiring adnexectomy. Discussion: Although often suspected, adnexal torsion is rarely confirmed. Although ovarian torsion accounts for a small number of all gynecological emergencies, it represents a common diagnostic challenge in the emergency setting. Conclusion: As ovary viability depends on early diagnosis, a high index of suspicion is required. This clinical case raises awareness of this entity in the differential diagnosis of lower abdominal pain in female children and adolescents., Introdução: A torção do ovário pode ocorrer em qualquer idade pediátrica, com um pico entre os 9 e os 14 anos. O diagnóstico é desafiante, devido à presença de sintomas inespecíficos identificados também noutras patologias mais comuns, como distúrbios geniturinários e gastrointestinais. Em crianças, as lesões do ovário que levam à sua torção são tipicamente benignas e císticas. O tratamento cirúrgico é uma abordagem segura, uma vez que a destorção precoce do ovário geralmente apresenta posterior função ovárica normal.Relato do caso: Uma adolescente do sexo feminino de 13 anos recorreu ao Serviço de Urgência por vómitos alimentares, lombalgia à esquerda e dor abdominal difusa com irradiação para o hipogastro, associados a sintomas urinários. O abdómen era doloroso com defesa na palpação da fossa ilíaca direita e área hipogástrica. O estudo analítico revelou parâmetros inflamatórios aumentados, a tira-teste urinária foi negativa e a tomografia computarizada pélvica identificou uma lesão quística de origem ovárica. Mediante suspeita de torsão do quisto, foi realizada uma cirurgia laparoscópica, que identificou a torsão anexial necrosada, com necessidade de anexectomia.Discussão: Embora frequentemente suspeita, a torção anexial é raramente confirmada. Esta condição é responsável por um pequeno número de todas as emergências ginecológicas, mas representa um desafio diagnóstico comum no Serviço de Urgência. Conclusão: Nesta condição clínica, a viabilidade do ovário depende do diagnóstico precoce, pelo que deverá existir um elevado índice de suspeição. O presente caso clínico serve para relembrar esta entidade no diagnóstico diferencial de dor abdominal inferior em crianças e adolescentes do sexo feminino.

Introduction: Type 1 diabetes mellitus is one of the most common endocrine-metabolic disorders of childhood and adolescence and requires a continuous and rigorous therapeutic approach, with recognized impact on children and adolescents’ quality of life.The purpose of this study was to evaluate the quality of life of adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus and its relationship with clinical and laboratory aspects and lifestyle.Material and Methods: DQOL questionnaire was applied to type 1 diabetes mellitus adolescents managed at the Pediatric Diabetology consultation of a level II hospital for more than one year. Questionnaire has a global score between 36 and 180, with higher scores reflecting worse quality of life. Statistical analysis was performed in SPSS®.Results: Seventy-one percent (n=36) of adolescents responded to the survey, 55.6% of which male, with a median age of 15 years. Median DQOL global score was 66. Adolescents with good metabolic control had a median global score of 49, compared with 71 in adolescents with poor metabolic control (p=0.007). The median global score of self-perception of better health was 51 compared to 73 for self-perception of poorer health (p=0.007).Discussion: In general, adolescents in this study revealed a satisfactory quality of life. Adolescents with better metabolic control have a higher satisfaction and better quality of life. Adolescents with better self-perceived health have a better quality of life.Conclusion: Recognizing factors that affect quality of life of adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus is crucial to devise therapeutic strategies that meet their expectations, promoting treatment adherence and better metabolic control., Introdução: A diabetes mellitus tipo 1 é uma das doenças endócrinas mais comuns em idade pediátrica e implica um tratamento contínuo e rigoroso, com impacto na qualidade de vida das crianças e adolescentes afetados. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a qualidade de vida de adolescentes com diabetes mellitus tipo 1 e a sua relação com aspetos clínico-laboratoriais e estilos de vida.Material e Métodos: O questionário DQOL foi aplicado a adolescentes com diabetes mellitus tipo 1 seguidos em consulta de Diabetologia Pediátrica de um hospital de nível II há mais de um ano. O questionário tem uma pontuação global entre 36-180, com maior pontuação a refletir pior qualidade de vida. A análise estatística foi efetuada no software SPSS®.Resultados: Responderam ao inquérito 71% (n=36) dos adolescentes, 55,6% dos quais do sexo masculino, com uma mediana de idades de 15 anos. A mediana de pontuação global no DQOL foi 66. Os adolescentes com bom controlo metabólico tiveram uma mediana de pontuação global de 49 em comparação com 71 no grupo com mau controlo metabólico (p=0,007). A pontuação global mediana de auto-perceção de melhor saúde foi 51 em comparação com 73 para a auto-perceção de pior saúde (p=0,007).Discussão: No geral, os adolescentes deste estudo revelaram uma boa qualidade de vida. Adolescentes com melhor controlo metabólico têm maior satisfação e melhor qualidade de vida e adolescentes com melhor auto-perceção de saúde têm melhor qualidade de vida.Conclusão: Reconhecer os fatores que afetam a qualidade de vida dos adolescentes com diabetes mellitus tipo 1 é fundamental para delinear estratégias terapêuticas que vão de encontro às suas expectativas, promovendo a adesão à terapêutica e um melhor controlo metabólico.

Discussion/Conclusion: This case illustrates an unusual presentation of type 1 Diabetes. The mechanisms underlying acute neurological changes associated with type 1 Diabetes are not yet completely clarified. A apresentação da doença é variável, dependendo da duração dos sintomas e da idade da criança. Caso Clínico: Os autores descrevem o caso de uma criança de 30 meses avaliada em consulta de Pediatria por perda de competências cognitivo-comportamentais e estagnação das aquisições motoras, tendo sido diagnosticada uma Diabetes Mellitus tipo 1 inaugural, sem acidose. Após a melhoria do controlo glicémico com a insulinoterapia, verificou-se uma normalização progressiva do neurodesenvolvimento da criança. Discussão/ Conclusão: Este caso ilustra uma apresentação incomum da Diabetes Mellitus tipo 1. A fisiopatologia das alterações neurológicas agudas associadas à Diabetes Mellitus tipo 1 ainda não está totalmente esclarecida. Um controlo glicémico eficaz é benéfico para o adequado neurodesenvolvimento das crianças com Diabetes.

The cellulose utilized was obtained from recycled agroindustrial residues: sugarcane bagasse, corn stover and soybean hulls. The levels of Cu (II) ions in regenerated cellulose membranes produced with cellulose from bagasse, corn stover and soybean hulls were 0.0236 wt%, 0.0255 wt% and 0.0268 wt%, respectively. These levels were approximately 15 times lower than those observed in previous studies (0.3634 wt%). Cellular viability data show that membranes produced from bagasse cellulose do not present toxicity to the cellular cultures studied. These results demonstrate an evolution in production of regenerated cellulose membranes from agroindustrial residues mainly due to a decrease in the Cu (II) ions level, showing the possibility of application of these systems with improved membranes processing. The genus Alouatta (howler monkeys) is the most widely distributed of New World primates, and has been arranged in three species groups: the Central American Alouatta palliata group and the South American Alouatta seniculus and Alouatta caraya groups. While the latter is monotypic, the A. seniculus group encompasses at least three species (A. seniculus, A. belzebul and A. fusca). In the present study, approximately 600 base pairs of the g1-globin pseudogene were sequenced in the four Brazilian species (A. seniculus, A. belzebul, A. fusca and A. caraya). Maximum parsimony and maximum likelihood methods yielded phylogenetic trees with the same arrangement: {A. caraya [A. seniculus (A. fusca, A. belzebul)]}. The most parsimonious tree had bootstrap values greater than 82% for all groupings, and strength of grouping values of at least 2, supporting the sister clade of A. fusca and A. belzebul. The study also confirmed the presence of a 150-base pair Alu insertion element and a 1.8-kb deletion in the g1-globin pseudogene in A. fusca, features found previously in the remaining three species. The cladistic classification based on molecular data agrees with those of morphological studies, with the monospecific A. caraya group being clearly differentiated from the A. seniculus group.Os guaribas, do gênero Alouatta, que são os primatas do Novo Mundo com maior distribuição geográfica, têm sido colocados em três grupos de espécies: o grupo Alouatta palliata da América central, e os grupos sulamericanos Alouatta seniculus e Alouatta caraya. Este último é monotípico, mas o grupo A. seniculus inclui pelo menos três espécies (A. seniculus, A. belzebul e A. fusca). Neste estudo, foram seqüenciados aproximadamente 600 pares de base do pseudogene globina g1 nas quatro espécies brasileiras (A. seniculus, A. belzebul, A. fusca e A. caraya). Os métodos de máxima parcimônia e máxima verossimilhança produziram árvores filogenéticas com o mesmo arranjo: {A. caraya [A. seniculus (A. fusca, A. belzebul)]}. A árvore mais parcimoniosa apresentou valores de bootstrap maiores de 82% para todos os agrupamentos, e valores de força de ligação de pelo menos 2, apoiando o agrupamento irmão de A. fusca e A. belzebul. O estudo também confirmou a presença em A. fusca do elemento de inserção Alu, com 150 pares de base, e uma deleção de 1,8 kb no pseudogene globina g1 já conhecidos nas demais espécies de guaribas. A classificação cladística baseada em dados moleculares é congruente com as de estudos morfológicos, com um isolamento claro do grupo monoespecífico A. caraya em relação ao grupo A. seniculus.

The IR spectra showed that only precipitate C presented the characteristic band of sulfate groups (807 cm−1) and was, therefore, the sulfoacetylated derivative. CSA presented a degree of acetylation of 2.70 and a degree of sulfonation of 0.063, and the presence of sulfate groups in the derivative displaced the position of C(6) to a lower field in the 13C-NMR spectrum and influenced reduced viscosity as a function of concentration. The evaluation of CSA as an additive showed that for a polymer/cement ratio of 0.6%, an increase of 13.80% was achieved consistently, and an increase of 21.05% in the potential tensile of adhesion strength was also achieved.

This material was characterized by FTIR and DSC. An aqueous dispersion of methylcellulose was used to produce mortars of Portland cement (CPV-ARI). The results showed an increase on the consistency index with the production of a system that presented good workability, homogeneity, and high viscosity, which was corroborated by the tacky aspect of the produced mixture. Hardened mortar presented an increase in the potential resistance to traction adherence when compared to the reference mortar. Those characteristics indicate that this material could be used in situations that need good workability, increasing on viscosity and adhesive properties, such as in tile installation, covering, and finishing.
