Abstract

Late preterm infants (born at 34-36 weeks gestation) have increasingly been regarded as 'at risk' rather than 'Iow risk' infants. The impact of neonatal morbidity and admission for neonatal care, on the longer term outcomes of LPls has not been fully explored. This thesis has sought to bridge an identified gap in the literature relating to this significant group of neonatal care graduates. The overall aim of this thesis was to consider the significant population of LPls who require admission for neonatal care. Firstly, maternal and perinatal risk factors and neonatal outcomes were considered through a descriptive analysis of neonatal data from the Neonatal Intensive Care Outcomes Research and Evaluation (NICORE) database. The second component of the thesis then considered specifically the early childhood development (cognition, language, motor development, physical health and growth) at three years of age of LPls who required neonatal Intensive Care (lC) compared with infants of the same gestational age who did not require Intensive Care. LPls who required neonatal care were identified as a unique group, with distinct characteristics and outcomes in the neonatal period when compared to other admitted infants. LPls requiring Intensive Care (IC) had increased maternal and perinatal risk factors and increased adverse neonatal outcomes compared to LPls who required Special Care Only (SCO). Findings from the follow-up study revealed that despite increased maternal and perinatal risk factors and neonatal morbidity, LPls who required admission to IC had similar cognitive, language and motor abilities and growth, compared with their peers, who were not admitted for le. However, LPls who required IC had increased health service usage compared to the non-IC infants. Having considered, for the first time, the neonatal outcomes and early childhood development of LPls on the basis of their requirement for neonatal Intensive Care, this thesis has provided a novel insight into the outcomes of this under-researched group of children.

Abstract

The introduction discusses the problematics involved in developing a feminist theory of late Renaissance and early modem witchcraft. It includes an overview of both Renaissance feminist theory and witchcraft studies, and posits that the witch is a hybrid, multivalent figure. Chapter one examines contemporary sources for portrayals of witches. The second chapter analyses the roles of witches, hags, and viragos in The Facrie Queene. Throughout the work their femininity is problematised, its meaning displaced onto horrific figures or fragmented into "good" and "bad" women. Both inspire dis-ease. Lyly's Endimion introduces a witch in the Thessalian tradition and women whose transgressions lie in daring to act and speak. Chapter three expands the definition of witch to other unruly women, including the shrew and the power-wielding woman; it also proves that Dipsas' power is the strongest in the play. Chapter four analyses the way in which the definition of witcheraft can be imposed on a woman by exterior societal forces, with reference to The Witch of Edmonton. Also discussed are the role of cursing and the problematics of female sexuality. Chapters five through eight discuss Shakespeare. Shakespeare's Joan of Arc is fragmented and reflects the varying views about her, and again shows how one woman may be variously defined. With Joan's death, Margaret of Anjou becomes the virile woman in the tetralogy. She and other women who share her verbal potency are condemned not only by the men in the plays but also by critics who erroneously take the negative view as definitive. Macbeth concerns itself with exploration of gender, androgyny, power (occult and otherwise) and its betrayal. Chapter eight outlines how the women in other Shakespearean plays do not achieve dramatic impact as witches because they are robbed of primary agency in the plays. Chapter nine demonstrates how Middleton distances his Heccat and proves that the real witches and villains lie in the structure of the patriarchy of The Witch. Lyly combines cunning woman with Sibyl in Mother Bombie; wit defines wisdom. Chapter eleven presents The Wise-Woman of Hogsdon, an anomaly in that the witchfigure and unruly characters of both sexes are not condemned and have happy resolutions. The conclusion summarises briefly and outlines areas of further study. Appendix A is a table; Appendix B outlines the role of cursing as gendered speech in Shakespeare's first tetralogy.

Abstract

To meet the ambitious objectives of biodiversity and climate conventions, the international community requires clarity on how these objectives can be operationalized spatially and how multiple targets can be pursued concurrently. To support goal setting and the implementation of international strategies and action plans, spatial guidance is needed to identify which land areas have the potential to generate the greatest synergies between conserving biodiversity and nature’s contributions to people. Here we present results from a joint optimization that minimizes the number of threatened species, maximizes carbon retention and water quality regulation, and ranks terrestrial conservation priorities globally. We found that selecting the top-ranked 30% and 50% of terrestrial land area would conserve respectively 60.7% and 85.3% of the estimated total carbon stock and 66% and 89.8% of all clean water, in addition to meeting conservation targets for 57.9% and 79% of all species considered. Our data and prioritization further suggest that adequately conserving all species considered (vertebrates and plants) would require giving conservation attention to ~70% of the terrestrial land surface. If priority was given to biodiversity only, managing 30% of optimally located land area for conservation may be sufficient to meet conservation targets for 81.3% of the terrestrial plant and vertebrate species considered. Our results provide a global assessment of where land could be optimally managed for conservation. We discuss how such a spatial prioritization framework can support the implementation of the biodiversity and climate conventions.

Abstract

Reassembling ecological communities and rebuilding habitats through active restoration treatments require curating the selection of plant species to use in seeding and planting mixes. Ideally, these mixes should be assembled based on attributes that support ecosystem function and services, promote plant and animal species interactions and ecological networks in restoration while balancing project constraints. Despite these critical considerations, it is common for species mixes to be selected opportunistically. Reframing the selection of seed mixes for restoration around ecological objectives is essential for success but accessible methods and tools are needed to support this effort.We developed a framework to optimize species seed mixes based on prioritizing plant species attributes to best support different objectives for ecosystem functions, services and trophic relationships such as pollination, seed dispersal and herbivory. We compared results to approaches where plant species are selected to represent plant taxonomic richness, dominant species and at random. We tested our framework in European alpine grasslands by identifying 176 plant species characteristic of the species pool, and identified 163 associated attributes affiliated to trophic relationships, ecosystem functions and services.In all cases, trophic relationships, ecosystem functions and services can be captured more efficiently through objective‐based prioritization using the functional identity of plant species. Solutions (plant species lists) can be compared quantitatively, in terms of costs, species or objectives. We confirm that a random draw of plant species from the regional plant species pool cannot be assumed to support other trophic groups and ecosystem functions and services.Synthesis and Applications. Our framework is presented as a proof‐of‐concept to help restoration practitioners better apply quantitative decision support to plant species selection to efficiently meet ecological restoration outcomes. Our approach may be tailored to any restoration initiative, habitat or restoration targets where seeding or planting mixes will be applied in active treatments. Abstract

Spatial prioritization is a critical step in conservation planning, a process designed to ensure that limited resources are applied in ways that deliver the highest possible returns for biodiversity and human wellbeing. In practice, many spatial prioritizations fall short of their potential by focusing on places rather than actions, and by using data of snapshots of assets or threats rather than estimated impacts. We introduce spatial action mapping as an approach that overcomes these shortfalls. This approach produces a spatially explicit view of where and how much a given conservation action is likely to contribute to achieving stated conservation goals. Through seven case examples, we demonstrate simple to complex versions of how this method can be applied across local to global scales to inform decisions about a wide range of conservation actions and benefits. Spatial action mapping can support major improvements in efficient use of conservation resources and will reach its full potential as the quality of environmental, social, and economic datasets converge and conservation impact evaluations improve. Abstract

Spatial decision-support tools can be used for scenario analysis and guide decision-makers towards transparent and knowledge-based spatial planning. Their application for multi-objective zoning in marine socio-ecological systems is beneficial for supporting the on-going Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP) process. We consider the sustainable development of aquaculture as one of the main maritime activities for sustainable Blue Growth in the Adriatic Ionian Region. The objective of this research is to conceptualize a strategic multi-objective zoning process for aquaculture expansion and biodiversity protection (seabed habitats, marine mammals, seabirds and turtles species distribution, nursery and spawning areas of commercially important fish species) in the Emilia Romagna Region (Italian Northern Adriatic Sea). This area is characterized by the highest productivity of mussels in Italy and is also intensively used by several maritime industries. The projected growth of the Blue Economy is likely to result in an increase of conflicts and impacts on sensitive environments. The decision support tools Marxan and Marxan with Zones are applied to develop alternative planning scenarios and compare solutions in terms of potential impacts on human activities. To do so, we i) build an aquaculture suitability distribution for important commercial species using a multi-criteria analysis that considers environmental, biological and socio-economic factors; ii) prioritize biodiversity using Marxan, while testing how different considerations of human impacts influences priorities (e.g. minimizing the area, number of maritime activities, distance from ports, aquaculture suitability); iii) simultaneously prioritize aquaculture and biodiversity using Marxan with Zones, while minimizing the impact of the number of maritime activities in the Emilia Romagna Region. We compare our scenarios using a novel nearest-neighbour statistical analysis for Marxan’s outputs to understand similarities and differences among scenarios. We conclude that an integrated multi-objective zoning approach, which simultaneously plans for biodiversity and aquaculture, will support more efficient, and therefore more effective strategies for Blue Growth objectives in the AIR.&nbsp

Abstract

Introduction: The evolving HIV epidemic, coupled with advances in HIV treatment, has resulted in an ageing HIV‐diagnosed population. It has been suggested that adverse physical and psychological effects of HIV may be higher among older people. However, few studies have examined the effect of older age on well‐being for people with HIV. Materials and Methods: The ASTRA study included 3258 HIV‐diagnosed individuals (2248 MSM; 373 heterosexual men; 637 women) recruited from eight UK clinics in 2011–12 (64% response rate). Participants completed a questionnaire that included standard inventories on symptoms and health‐related quality of life (HrQoL). Associations of age group with: physical symptom distress (reporting significant distress for ≥1 of 26 symptoms), depression and anxiety (score ≥10 on PHQ‐9 and GAD‐7, respectively) and HrQoL problem (reporting problems on ≥1 of 5 Eurqol‐5D domains) were assessed; adjustment was made for gender/sexuality and time with diagnosed HIV. Results: Of all participants, 87% were taking ART, 76% had VL ≤50c/mL and 19% had CD4 Conclusions: Physical and psychological symptoms are common among people living with HIV, but the burden of these symptoms is not highest among the older age group.
