We investigated rare earth element (REE) minerals in low- to medium-grade metapelites sampled in two nappes of the Austroalpine Unit (Eastern Alps, Austria). Combining microstructural and chemical characterization of the main and REE minerals with thermodynamic forward modeling, Raman spectroscopy on carbonaceous material (RSCM) thermometry and in situ U–Th–Pb dating reveal a polymetamorphic evolution of all samples. In the hanging wall nappe, allanite and REE epidote formed during Permian metamorphism (275–261 Ma, 475–520 °C, 0.3–0.4 GPa). In one sample, Cretaceous (ca. 109 Ma) REE epidote formed at ∼440 °C and 0.4–0.8 GPa at the expense of Permian monazite clusters. In the footwall nappe, large, chemically zoned monazite porphyroblasts record both Permian (283–256 Ma, 560 °C, 0.4 GPa) and Cretaceous (ca. 87 Ma, 550 °C, 1.0–1.1 GPa) metamorphism. Polymetamorphism produced a wide range of complex REE-mineral-phase relationships and microstructures. Despite the complexity, we found that bulk rock Ca, Al and Na contents are the main factor controlling REE mineral stability; variations thereof explain differences in the REE mineral assemblages of samples with identical pressure and temperature (P – T) paths. Therefore, REE minerals are also excellent geochronometers to resolve the metamorphic evolution of low- to medium-grade rocks in complex tectonic settings. The recognition that the main metamorphic signature in the hanging wall is Permian implies a marked P – T difference of ∼250 °C and at least 0.5 GPa, requiring a major normal fault between the two nappes which accommodated the exhumation of the footwall in the Cretaceous. Due to striking similarities in setting and timing, we put this low-angle detachment in context with other Late Cretaceous low-angle detachments from the Austroalpine domain. The Clarence Stream intrusion-related gold deposit is hosted within metasedimentary and metavolcanic sequences of the Ordovician Cookson and Silurian Mascarene groups that were intruded by several phases of the Late Silurian to Early Devonian Saint George Plutonic Suite. Based on geochemical and geochronological data, the intrusive rocks in the deposit are categorized into three distinct suites, including gabbroic, granitoid, and Whittier Ridge Granite (WRG). The gabbroic suite is the same as the East Branch Brook metagabbro intrusion, which exhibits a subalkaline mafic composition fractionated from a depleted mantle in a suprasubduction zone setting. The granitoid suite shows the same geochemical characteristics and age as the metaluminous to slightly peraluminous Magaguadavic Granite and its fractionated phases. The WRG suite reflects characteristics of calc-alkaline, metaluminous to peraluminous I-type granites in the area, such as Sorrel Ridge and Mount Douglas granitic plutons. In situ U-Pb zircon geochronology yielded an age of 419.5 ± 3.8 Ma for a monzodiorite from the gabbroic suite. Porphyritic granite and alkali granite from granitoid suite yielded U-Pb zircon age of 402.4 ± 1.8 Ma and 394.3 ± 3.8 Ma, respectively. Geochronologic data from the WRG suite reflect two different crystallization ages of 383.8 Ma (382.4 ± 3.1 to 385.1 ± 4) and 372.4 Ma (367.4 ± 1.3 to 377.1 ± 1.9). Several pieces of evidence demonstrate that the gold mineralizing events occurred after the emplacement of the East Branch Brook metagabbroic dykes and are linked to the various intrusive phases of the nearby syntectonic Early Devonian Magaguadavic Granite. The absence of gold and sulphide mineralization in felsic dykes related to the WRG confirms that this plutonic body formed adjacent to the gold zones after the main gold mineralizing event. In situ LA‐ICP‐MS/MS U‐Pb and Rb‐Sr geochronology combined with geochemical analysis and electron microscopy have been performed on ejecta components sampled from the Mid‐to‐Late Triassic Mercia Mudstone Group at Churchwood Quarry, SW England. The layer comprises altered impact spherules, melt‐rich and fragment‐rich accreted grain clusters (AGCs), along with shocked mineral phases. Late Triassic ages are obtained: a U‐Pb age of 219 ± 72 Ma from variably shock‐metamorphosed apatite and a Rb‐Sr age of 213 ± 31 Ma from melt‐rich AGCs. A post‐depositional U‐Pb age of 200 ± 7.5 Ma obtained from the carbonate host matrix correlates with an early Jurassic dolomitization event associated with regional marine transgression. Several links to the Manicouagan impact structure, Canada, are identified that complement previous provenance studies: (1) rare earth element compositions of impact spherules and melt‐rich AGCs match those of the Manicouagan impact melt sheet; (2) the preservation of Archean and Paleo‐ to Neoproterozoic target rock U‐Pb ages in zircon and apatite match those recorded within Manicouagan basement lithologies; and (3) impact spherules and melt‐rich AGCs record initial 87Sr/86Sr compositions that overlap with those of the Manicouagan impact melt sheet and the target rocks involved in their generation. Zircon is a common, widely distributed accessory mineral in most igneous rocks and its refractory nature records magmatic evolution in terms of oxygen and U-Th-Pb isotopes, and trace-element contents all of which reflect the intrinsic physio-chemical evolution of the magmatic systems in which it crystallized. Zircon compositions can be used as an indicator of relative fertility of hypabyssal intrusions in terms Cu ± Mo ± Au porphyry mineralization. To further characterize syn-to post-collisional adakitic Devonian oxidized I-type granitoids in the New Brunswick (specifically, those with Cu ± Mo ± Au porphyrystyle mineralization), LA-ICP-MS analyses (guided by µXRF-EDS mapping and SEM-BSE imaging of polished thin sections) of zircons from 13 granitoids was conducted. The zircons studied were similar in terms of their textures (homogenous cores, patchy zoning, oscillatory zoning, and some unzoned zircon); however, they have a wide range of trace- and minor-element (Hf, HREE, Y, Th, U) compositions. Specifically, Zr/Hf ranges between 24-60, whereas Th/U ranges between 0.15 and 5.37. The presence of inherited zircon affects the concentrations of Th and U, as well as other key elements. Estimated crystallization temperatures of granitoids, ranging from 737 to 899°C, were calculated via Ti-in-zircon geothermometry assuming reduced TiO[sub 2] and SiO[sub 2] activities. The calculated log fO2 values for zircons from some of these granitoids indicate a highly oxidized magmatic signature. Zr/Hf, Eu/Eu*, and (Eu/Eu*)/Y in zircon, as well as zircon (Ce/Nd)/Y are some of the best indicators of porphyry fertility. The Ce/Ce* in zircon exhibit a large range (1.1-590), with higher Ce/Ce* reflecting more metallogenically favourable oxidizing conditions. If Eu/Eu* in zircon is ≥0.4 (relatively oxidized conditions), it indicates a high potential for an ore-forming porphyry Cu mineralizing system. Lower Eu contents reflect relatively reducing conditions, as Eu anomalies vary with oxygen fugacity as well, and the relative abundance of Eu2+ is higher, but does not substitute into the zircon lattice. The evidence extracted from analyzing the zircon composition within New Brunswick's I-type granitoids indicates the fertility of these hypabyssal intrusions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The NE-trending multiphase Late Devonian Eagle Lake granite (ELG) in southwestern New Brunswick is mineralized, consisting of hypabyssal porphyritic stocks and dikes that intruded Silurian metabasic volcanic rocks; however, its various phases, ages, and associations with notable stockwork Cu–Mo–Au mineralization and alteration have yet to have been studied. The ELG suite is predominantly composed of phenocrysts and a microcrystalline groundmass of quartz, K-feldspar, and plagioclase, with minor biotite and accessory minerals. In situ LA ICP-MS U–Pb zircon dating of this pluton yielded 360 ± 5 Ma (Late Devonian), so this pluton is considered part of the Late Devonian granitic series in southwestern New Brunswick. The isotopic analysis of two granitic samples yielded an initial 143Nd/144Nd of 0.512164 and 0.512184, initial 87Sr/86Sr of 0.70168 and 0. 70675, and initial 176Hf/177Hf of 0.282619 and 0.282631. The εNd (360 Ma) is −0.37 to +0.03, whereas the εHf (360 Ma) values are +2.1 and +2.5. Pb isotopic analysis yielded a 206Pb/204Pb of 18.49 and 18.72, 207Pb/204Pb of 15.62 and 15.63, and 208Pb/204Pb of 38.26 and 38.37, indicative of a relatively radiogenic source contaminating a primitive mantle melt. Potassic alteration and pyrite-quartz stockwork Cu–Mo–Au veining is evident in some parts of these porphyries. Petrographic and geochemical evidence indicates that this composite pluton is a low-T, I-type granite with zircon saturation temperatures between 720° and 825 °C, with emplacement depths of 10.3 to 4.4 km. Garnet Sm–Nd and Lu–Hf isotopic data are increasingly used in tandem to characterize tectono-metamorphic events and their duration because the two chronometers may yield a progression from older Lu–Hf to younger Sm–Nd ages. In this contribution, we utilize garnet compositional zoning and monazite U–Pb ages to evaluate explanations for differences in garnet Sm–Nd and Lu–Hf ages for low- to mid-amphibolite facies rocks from the Picuris and Tusas Mountains, New Mexico. Ten Sm–Nd ages, eight Lu–Hf garnet ages (6 previously published), and four matrix monazite U–Pb dates span 1422–1370 Ma, 1456–1399 Ma, and 1377–1356 Ma, respectively. The weighted means of garnet ages are 1398 ± 11 Ma for Sm–Nd (N  = 10/10) and 1402 ± 4 Ma for Lu–Hf (N  = 6/8); however, Sm–Nd and Lu–Hf ages from three samples differ by 29, 34, and 55 my with differences between 2σ age envelopes of 12, 9, and 38 my. respectively. In these samples, primary Lu and Sm zoning in garnet, diffusion modification of zoning, or disequilibrium is sufficient to cause older Lu–Hf ages and younger Sm–Nd ages. Alternatively, two of the three Lu–Hf ages, c. 1450 Ma, may reflect the onset of a prolonged regional event or an earlier thermal event, and the three c. 1370 Ma garnet Sm–Nd ages may reflect diffusional re-equilibration. These three c. 1370 Ma ages are indistinguishable from the monazite ages, and garnet have trace element zoning consistent with diffusional alteration of growth zoning in Sm and Nd but not Lu and Hf. Garnet from the other seven samples have prograde zoning with little to no evidence for diffusional relaxation of zoning in these elements. We conclude that the majority of garnet preserve primary compositions and indistinguishable garnet ages of c. 1400 Ma, indicating a c. 22 my garnet growth history based on weighted mean. The two oldest c. 1450 Lu–Hf and three youngest c. 1370 Sm–Nd garnet ages require an earlier thermal history and modification of garnet composition, respectively. Dating low‐grade metamorphism is challenging since such rocks commonly lack suitable target minerals for acquiring pressure–temperature–time–deformation (P–T–t–d) data. Herein a new geochronological method termed 'bulk inclusion dating' is applied to a chloritoid‐bearing schist from the Staufen‐Höllengebirge Nappe (SHN, Austroalpine Unit, Eastern Alps, Austria) for which Cretaceous metamorphism is imprecisely constrained. Thermodynamic modelling of the phase relations and mineral chemistry predicts the stability of the equilibrium assemblage in a P–T field between 450–490℃ and 0.5–0.7 GPa, which agrees with peak temperature constraints ~490℃ derived from Raman spectroscopy of carbonaceous material. Chemical zoning of, and the zonation of inclusions within, chloritoid confirm porphyroblast growth at these conditions. High‐resolution imaging reveals thousands of minute (length: 0.1–3 µm), euhedral micro‐zircon crystals included in chloritoid porphyroblasts and in the matrix. The morphological and microstructural characteristics of micro‐zircon as well as the crystal size distributions indicate that it nucleated and grew at greenschist facies conditions most likely from a Zr‐saturated fluid. In situ laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy bulk inclusion dating of metamorphic zircon in the chloritoid rim using a laser spot diameter of 120 μm yields a U–Pb age of 116.7 ± 9.1 Ma (MSWD: 1.5, n: 79). We interpret zircon precipitation and progressive coarsening coeval with chloritoid growth during prograde metamorphism and thus link the age to the late prograde part of the P–T evolution. The contribution of other U‐bearing phases (apatite, epidote, rutile) does not significantly disturb the U–Pb age. The data provide clear evidence for Early Cretaceous metamorphism in the SHN and indicates that metamorphism started at least 20 m.y. before the formation of eclogites in the Austroalpine Unit. The method introduced here allows integration between metamorphic conditions and age constraints in low‐grade metamorphic rocks and opens up new potential applications in petrochronology. The Jumping Brook Metamorphic Suite in the western Cape Breton Highlands of Nova Scotia is part of an inverted Barrovian sequence that formed during a Late Silurian–Early Devonian promontory–promontory collision in the Canadian Appalachians. In this study, systematic discrepancies between geochemical observations and thermodynamic model predictions led to the discovery of a systematic relationship linking the style of garnet core isopleth intersection (GCII) to the pyrophanite (MnTiO3) component of co‐existing ilmenite. Samples that yielded tight GCIIs at or near the garnet‐in curve were found to contain ilmenite with negligible pyrophanite components, whereas samples yielding GCIIs far removed (up to 105°C) from the garnet‐in curve were found to contain ilmenite with significant pyrophanite and/or ecandrewsite (ZnTiO3) components. Based on petrographic and geochemical observations, Mn(±Zn)‐rich ilmenite are interpreted to have sequestered Mn throughout prograde metamorphism due to sluggish intracrystalline diffusion. The amount of reactive Mn input into the thermodynamic models from whole‐rock analyses were, in some cases, overestimated, resulting in garnet‐in curve topologies that extend to erroneously low P–T conditions. Modifications to the whole‐rock chemistry that account for Mn sequestration into ilmenite, however, yielded robust model results. Our results show that, in addition to uncertainties in thermodynamic data sets and phenomenon related to reaction kinetics, Mn‐rich ilmenite may superimpose additional complexities related to the interpretation of predicted equilibria involving garnet. Numerical simulations of garnet crystallization were used to infer P–T paths of metamorphism for one sample from the garnet zone (Mn corrected) and two samples from the staurolite zone (Mn uncorrected) of the inverted sequence. Model results are remarkably similar among the three samples and indicate that garnet crystallization occurred along relatively steep (31–37°C/km) clockwise P–T paths. The peak conditions of garnet crystallization and metamorphism (560–590°C, 7.4–8.0 kbar) are interpreted to have been attained approximately simultaneously, such that the paths are characterized by tight prograde‐to‐retrograde transitions. The hairpin nature of the P–T paths is interpreted to represent the onset of thrust‐related exhumation and isograd inversion along ductile shear zones, consistent with available field and geochronological constraints. The Chadormalu magnetite-apatite deposit in Bafq metallogenic province, Central Iran, is hosted in the late Precambrian-lower Cambrian volcano-sedimentary rocks with sodic, calcic, and potassic alterations characteristic of iron oxide copper-gold (IOCG) and iron oxide-apatite (IOA) ore systems. Apatite occurs as scattered irregular veinlets and disseminated grains, respectively, within and in the marginal parts of the main ore-body, as well as apatite-magnetite veins in altered wall rocks. Textural evidence (SEM-BSE images) of these apatites shows primary bright, and secondary dark areas with inclusions of monazite/xenotime. The primary, monazite-free fluorapatite contains higher concentrations of Na, Si, S, and light rare earth elements (LREE). The apatite was altered by hydrothermal events that led to leaching of Na, Si, and REE + Y, and development of the dark apatite. The bright apatite yielded two U-Pb age populations, an older dominant age of 490 ± 21 Ma, similar to other iron deposits in the Bafq district and associated intrusions, and a younger age of 246 ± 17 Ma. The dark apatite yielded a U-Pb age of 437 ± 12 Ma. Our data suggest that hydrothermal magmatic fluids contributed to formation of the primary fluorapatite, and sodic and calcic alterations. The primary apatite reequilibrated with basinal brines in at least two regional extensions and basin developments in Silurian and Triassic in Central Iran. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In Halifax, Nova Scotia, 149 victims of the 1912 sinking of the Titanic lie beneath petrologically identical "black granite" headstones. Those headstones, supplied by the White Star Line, arrived in Halifax in late 1912, but no known historical document reveals their source. They consist of medium- to coarse-grained olivine-bearing gabbro, with cumulus phases consisting of randomly oriented euhedral plagioclase laths, corroded olivine, and titaniferous magnetite, and intercumulus material consisting of augite with reaction rims of hornblende, both of which are variably altered to actinolite and biotite. Three types of forensic evidence [quantitative - radiometric age of 422.1 ±1.3 Ma (n = 17), mean olivine FeO/(FeO + MgO) values ranging from 0.43 to 0.46, augite rim traceelement compositions (35 elements), and whole-rock chemical compositions (48 elements), including statistical analysis of all these data showing no significant differences between the headstones and their putative source quarry; qualitative - mineral assemblages, modal proportions, textural parameters, style and degree of alteration; and circumstantial - regional reputation, quarrying history, local logistics, regional transportation, McGrattan marker] connect the Titanic headstones to the Saint George Batholith in southwestern New Brunswick. Precise matching of any dimension stone to its source quarry is problematic, because that material connects only to a void in the quarry. Ideally, all physical-chemical-temporal properties of the dimension stone and source quarry should match, both quantitatively and qualitatively, but in reality only the ages must almost certainly match. Thus it is remotely possible for the right quarry to mismatch most of the properties of the dimension stone, and for a wrong quarry to match most of the properties of the dimension stone. However, in the case of the Titanic headstones, the cumulative weight of all the quantitative, qualitative, and circumstantial evidence, combined with a process of elimination and application of Ockham's razor, indicate that the Charles Hanson quarry near Bocabec, southwestern New Brunswick, is the likely source for the gabbroic Titanic headstones in Halifax, Nova Scotia. In situ laser ablation quadrupole inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry was used to measure Pb isotopes in galena. Data acquisition was optimized by adjusting spot size, energy density, and ablation time to obtain near steady-state low relative standard deviation (%RSD) signals. Standard-sample bracketing using in-house Broken Hill galena as external reference standard was used and offline data reduction was carried out using VizualAge for Iolite3. Using this methodology, galena grain in polished thin sections from selected massive sulphide deposits of the Bathurst Mining Camp, Canada, were tested and compared to previously published data. Absolute values and errors on the weighted mean of ~20 individual analyses from each sample compared favourably with whole-rock Pb-Pb isotope data. This approach provides a mean to obtain rapid, accurate, and moderately (0.1% 2σ) precise Pb isotope measurements in galena and is particularly well suited for exploratory or reconnaissance studies. Further refinement of this approach may be useful in exploration for volcanogenic massive sulphides deposits and might be a useful vectoring tool when complemented with other conventional exploration techniques. The high-grade metamorphic metasedimentary rocks that comprise the Wollaston Domain, northern Saskatchewan, are host to numerous REE-mineralized pegmatite bodies, including the Kulyk Lake monazite-apatite-Fe(Ti)-oxide occurrence. This occurrence, which is defined by a 3-5 cm wide sinouous zone of granoblastic monazite, apatite, and titanomagnetite, is enclosed within aplitic monzonite and granitic pegmatite dikes. Monazite in this dike was studied in detail using in situ laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) and LA-multi-collector(MC)-ICP-MS. A combination of in situ LA-ICP-MS trace element mapping, trace-element quantification, and U-Pb dating were used to identify a significant volume of partial resorbed xenocyrstic monazite and zircon cores within the monazite-apatite-Fe(Ti)-oxide zone. This xenocrystic monazite is locally characterized by anomalously high As, V, Mo, and Eu concentrations and high (La/Yb)CN (i.e., >1000) consistent with their derivation from metalliferous black shales. The U-Pb age distribution of the inherited monazite and zircon populations matches that of the middle- to upper-Wollaston Group sedimentary succession. The latter was confirmed by in situ Sm-Nd isotope systematics measured by LA-MC-ICP-MS that yielded εNd(1830Ma) between -5.0 and -5.7 consistent with derivation from Wollaston Group metasediment. The crystallization of ~1830 Ma anatectic overgrowths on xenocrystic cores is indistinguishable from monazite crystallization in the aplitic monzonite dike hosting the monazite-apatite-Fe(Ti)-oxide bodies. This study reveals the potential importance of metalliferous monazite-rich lithologies in the anatectic zone to these pegmatite-hosted REE occurrences and suggests that entrainment and magmatic segregation mechanisms may have helped to concentrate monazite, apatite, and Fe(Ti)-oxide prior to final emplacement of the aplite-pegmatite dikes. Similar processes may have occurred regionally and in other high-grade metamorphic terrains worldwide that are endowed with metalliferous metasedimentary protoliths. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The ~8 Moz Morila gold mine, hosted within Paleoproterozoic Birimian volcano-sedimentary rocks of southeast Mall, is spatially and temporally associated with prolonged (2098-2065 Ma) arc magmatism during the late stages of the Eburnean orogeny. Visible gold at Morila is associated with variably deformed polymineralic veins containing native bismuth, maldonite, aurostibite, rare tellurobismuthite, and löllingite, suggesting a proximal intrusion-related source for this period of gold mineralization. This early formed mineralization is contained within a zone of hornblende hornfels contact metamorphism and is spatially associated with syn- to post-D2 emplacement of 2098 to 2091 Ma quartz-diorite, granodiorite, and leucogranite magmas. The occurrence of immiscible Au-Sb-Bi-Te blebs within sills or dikes associated with gold mineralization at the Morila deposit explicitly links granitic magmatism with gold mineralization This early intrusion-related gold system was overprinted by a younger post-D2 stage of hydrothermal alteration recorded by sulfidation along a north-northeast-trending zone characterized by disseminated idioblastic arsenopyrite porphyroblasts that contain polygonal gold blebs. Silicate alteration during this stage includes albitization of plagioclase and the growth of randomly distributed biotite and titanite, the latter typically surrounding ilmenite. Uranium-Pb dating of this generation of titanite yields a preliminary age for late-stage sulfidation of 2074 ± 14 Ma, which brackets mineralization to the interval 2098 ± 4 to 2074 ± 14 Ma. The geochemistry and isotope systematics of syn- to post-tectonic intermediate intrusions at the Morila deposit point to their derivation in a suprasubduction zone setting and emplacement into tectonically thickened crust. Based on these observations, it is sug*gested that the Morila gold deposit formed during late-stage collisional orogenesis involving the accretion of juvenile volcanic arc terranes against the Archean Man (Liberian) cratonic nucleus. The North China craton was stabilized in the late Paleoproterozoic but experienced significant removal of ancient lithospheric keel in the late Mesozoic that resulted in the formation of numerous world-class gold deposits with combined reserves of more than 7000 t of gold. However, it remains uncertain whether the North China craton contains older gold deposits formed during generation and final stabilization of the craton. Here, we show that the Shanggong gold deposit (105 t Au at 5.31 g/t) on the southern margin of the North China craton formed in the late Paleoproterozoic during the collision between the Eastern and Western blocks that led to formation of the Trans-North China orogen and final stabilization of the craton. The Shanggong deposit is hosted in amphibolite-facies rocks of the Neoarchean to early Paleoproterozoic Taihua Group and overlying volcanic rocks of the late Paleoproterozoic Xiong'er Group. Gold mineralization is structurally controlled by NE-striking faults and occurs in four segments: the Liuxiugou, Hugou, Shanggong, and Qiliping segments. The ores consist mainly of quartz-ankeritesulfide stockworks and sulfide disseminations in hydrothermally altered wall rocks. Gold is mostly contained in arsenian pyrite that is variably associated with minor sphalerite, galena, and chalcopyrite. Ore-related alteration assemblages comprise mainly quartz, ankerite, K-feldspar, sericite, and tourmaline. Both the stockworks and mineralized alteration assemblages contain hydrothermal accessory minerals, including monazite, apatite, and rutile. Paragenetic relations and textural data show that these accessory phases precipitated synchronously with gold-bearing sulfides. Laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry spot analyses of monazite and apatite from the Shanggong segment yielded reproducible U-Pb dates of 1747 ± 20 Ma (2σ, mean square of weighted deviates [MSWD] 0.46) and 1788 ± 200 Ma (2σ, MSWD = 11.3), respectively. These dates are indistinguishable within errors from an apatite U-Pb date of 1743 ± 79 Ma (2σ, MSWD = 1.6) at the Liuxiugou segment and a rutile U-Pb date of 1804 ± 52 Ma (2σ, MSWD = 0.77) at the Hugou segment. These new dates suggest that the Shanggong deposit formed at ca. 1.80-1.74 Ga, coeval with or immediately after formation of the Trans-North China orogen and final stabilization of the North China craton. Sulfides from the Shanggong gold deposit have δ34S values ranging from -18.5‰ to -6.9‰, whereas the coexisting ankerite has δ13CPDB of -6.81‰ to -1.61‰ and δ18OSMOW of 15.70‰-17.62‰. The stable isotope data are distinctively different from values of the Early Cretaceous gold deposits in the southern North China craton, indicating contrasting hydrothermal systems responsible for these two categories of gold deposits. The results presented here, combined with independent geologic evidence, allow Shanggong to be the first confirmed Paleoproterozoic orogenic gold deposit in the North China craton. Recognition of Paleoproterozoic orogenic gold mineralization provides significant new insights into the gold metallogeny of the well-endowed North China craton and has implications for future gold exploration along the three Paleoproterozoic orogenic belts in this craton. The Sisson Brook deposit is a low-grade, large-tonnage W-Mo deposit with notable Cu located in west-central New Brunswick, Canada, and is one of several W-Mo deposits in New Brunswick associated with fluids sourced from granitic plutons emplaced during the Devonian Acadian Orogeny. The younger Devonian-aged stockwork and replacement scheelite-wolframite-molybdenite (and chalcopyrite) mineralization straddles the faulted boundary between Cambro-Ordovician metasedimentary rocks with Ordovician felsic volcaniclastic rocks and the Middle Silurian Howard Peak Granodiorite, with dioritic and gabbroic phases. U-Pb dating of magmatic titanite in the host dioritic phase of the Howard Peak Granodiorite using LA ICP-MS resulted in a 204Pb-corrected concordant age of 432.1 ± 1.9 Ma. Petrologic examination of selected mineralization combined with elemental mapping of vein selvages using micro-XRF and metasomatic titanite and ilmenite grains using LA ICP-MS indicates that saturation of titaniferous phases influenced the distribution of scheelite versus wolframite mineralization by altering the aFe/aCa ratio in mineralizing fluids. Ilmenite saturation in Ti-rich host rocks lowered the relative aFe/aCa and led to the formation of scheelite over wolframite. The Lake George antimony mine was at one time North America's largest producer of antimony. Despite being widely known for the antimony mineralization, the deposit also hosts a range of styles of mineralization such as multiple generations of W-Mo bearing quartz veins as well as a system of As-Au bearing quartz–carbonate veins. In situ U-Pb zircon geochronology, using LA ICP-MS, of the Lake George granodiorite yielded a weighted mean 206Pb/238U age of 419.6 ± 3.0 Ma. Step heating of phlogopite separated from the lamprophyre dykes produced a 40Ar/39Ar plateau segment date of 419.4 ± 1.4 Ma. Single molybdenite crystal analysis for Re-Os geochronology was conducted on two W-Mo-bearing quartz veins, which cross-cut altered granodiorite and altered metasedimentary rocks and yielded two dates of 415.7 ± 1.7 Ma and 416.1 ± 1.7 Ma respectively. 40Ar/39Ar geochronology of muscovite from alteration associated with Au-bearing quartz–carbonate veins yielded one representative plateau segment date of 414.1 ± 1.3 Ma. The dates produced in this study revealed that the different magmatic–hydrothermal events at the Lake George mine occurred over approximately a 10-million-year period at the end of the Silurian and the start of the Devonian following the termination of the Acadian orogeny. A combination of in situ laser ablation inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (LA ICP–MS) analyses guided by Scanning Electron Microscope–Back-Scattered Electron imaging (SEM–BSE) was applied to hydrothermal monazite from greisen veins of the Late Devonian, highly evolved, uraniferous Mount Douglas Granite, New Brunswick, Canada. Understanding the uraniferous nature of the suite and characterizing the hydrothermal system that produced the associated mineralized greisen veins were the main goals of this study. The uraniferous nature of the Mount Douglas Granite is evident from previous airborne radiometric surveys, whole-rock geochemical data indicating high U and Th (2–22 ppm U; 19–71 ppm Th), the presence of monazite, zircon, xenotime, thorite, bastnaesite, and uraninite within the pluton and the associated hydrothermal greisen veins, as well as anomalous levels of U and Th in wolframite, hematite, and martite within greisen veins. New U–Pb geochronology of hydrothermal monazite coexisting with sulfide and oxide minerals yielded mineralization ages ranging from 344 to 368 Ma, with most of them (90%) younger than the crystallization age of the pluton (368 ± 3 Ma). The younger mineralization age indicates post-magmatic hydrothermal activities within the Mount Douglas system that was responsible for the mineralization. The production of uraniferous greisen veins by this process is probably associated with the High Heat Production (HHP) nature of this pluton, resulting from the radioactive decay of U, Th, and K. This heat prolongs post-crystallization hydrothermal fluid circulation and promotes the generation of hydrothermal ore deposits that are younger than the pluton. Assuming a density of 2.61 g/cm3, the average weighted mean radiogenic heat production of the Mount Douglas granites is 5.9 µW/m3 (14.1 HGU; Heat Generation Unit), in which it ranges from 2.2 µW/m3 in the least evolved unit, Dmd1, up to 10.1 µW/m3 in the most fractionated unit, Dmd3. They are all significantly higher than the average upper continental crust (1.65 µW/m3). The high radiogenic heat production of the Mount Douglas Granite, accompanied by a high estimated heat flow of 70 mW/m2, supports the assignment of the granite to a 'hot crust' (>7 HGU) HHP granite and highlights its potential for geothermal energy exploration. The compositions of phyllosilicates, with a focus on fluid-mobile elements, were evaluated as a means to fingerprint the Middle Ordovician metamorphosed (greenschist facies) volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits of the Bathurst Mining Camp (BMC), Canada. Ninety-five drill-core samples from six of the major deposits of the Bathurst Mining Camp (Brunswick No. 12, Heath Steele B zone, Halfmile Lake Deep zone, Key Anacon East zone, Louvicourt, and Restigouche) were analyzed using electron microprobe and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. Typically, phyllosilicates (chlorite, white mica, and to a lesser extent biotite) are ubiquitous phases in the host rocks of the massive sulfide deposits of the BMC. Electron microprobe analysis results show a wide compositional variation in chlorite and white mica. Laser ablation inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) analysis was performed to measure fluid-mobile elements, showing that Tl is distinctly enriched in all white mica (up to 719 ppm) relative to chlorite (up to 50.1 ppm). Chlorite hosts Sn (up to 4600 ppm), Hg (up to 7.3 ppm), Sb (up to 35.4 ppm), As (up to 1320 ppm), In (up to 307 ppm), Cd (up to 83.2 ppm), and Se (up to 606 ppm). White mica hosts Sn (up to 1316 ppm), Hg (up to 93 ppm), Sb (up to 1630 ppm), As (up to 14,800 ppm), In (up to 1186 ppm), Cd (up to 98 ppm), and Se (up to 38.8 ppm). Limited LA-ICP-MS analysis on biotite indicates a higher overall concentration of Tl (mean = 14.6 ppm) relative to co-existing white mica (mean = 2.18 ppm). On average, biotite is also more enriched in Hg, Sn, and Ba relative to chlorite and white mica. Laser Ablation ICP-MS profiles of chlorite, white mica, and biotite demonstrate smooth time-dependent variations diagnostic of structural substitution of these elements. Compositional variation of chlorite-white mica pairs presented in the current study shows systematic variations as a function of distance from the mineralized horizons. This highlights the potential to use trace-element signatures in these phyllosilicate pairs to identify proximal (chlorite) and distal (white mica) footprints for volcanogenic massive sulfides exploration. The Late Silurian to Late Devonian Saint George Batholith in southwestern New Brunswick is a large composite intrusion (2000 km2) emplaced into the continental margin of the peri-Gondwanan microcontinent of Ganderia. The batholith includes: (1) Bocabec Gabbro; (2) equigranular Utopia and Wellington Lake biotite granites; (3) Welsford, Jake Lee Mountain, and Parks Brook peralkaline granites; (4) two-mica John Lee Brook Granite; (6) Jimmy Hill and Magaguadavic megacrystic granites; and (6) rapakivi Mount Douglas Granite. New LA ICP-MS in situ analyses of six samples from the Saint George Batholith are as follows: (1) U-Pb monazite crystallization age of 425.5 ± 2.1 Ma for the Utopia Granite in the western part of the batholith (2) U-Pb zircon crystallization ages of 420.4 ± 2.4 Ma and 420.0 ± 3.5 Ma for two samples of the Utopia Granite from the central part of the batholith; (3) U-Pb zircon crystallization age of 418.0 ± 2.3 Ma for the Jake Lee Mountain Granite; (4) U-Pb zircon crystallization age of 415.5 ± 2.1 Ma for the Wellington Lake Granite; and (5) U-Pb monazite crystallization age of 413.3 ± 2.1 Ma for the John Lee Brook Granite. The new geochronological together with new and existing geochemical data suggest that the protracted magmatic evolution of the Late Silurian to Early Devonian plutonic rocks is related to the transition of the Silurian Kingston arc-Mascarene backarc system from an extensional to compressional tectonic environment during collision of the Avalonian microcontinent with Laurentia followed by slab break-off. The Cape Spencer gold deposit, located approximately 15 km southeast of Saint John, has an inferred mineral resource estimate of 151 000 oz. The Cape Spencer area presents polyphase fold and thrust style deformation of the rock units related to the docking and adjustment of the Meguma terrane, as documented through different movements along the Minas Fault Zone between the Late Devonian and Late Carboniferous. The deposit presents characteristics of orogenic-style gold systems in which Au is hosted in quartz ± carbonate ± plagioclase ± pyrite ± specularite veins that vary from several millimetres to several decimetres in width and within sericitized (illite-carbonate ± quartz ± pyrite ± specularite), pyrite-rich rocks along the thrust faults and folds. The timing of gold deposition is bracketed by the age of the youngest unit affected by the alteration and displaying the ductile to brittle fabrics associated with gold mineralization, the Lancaster Formation (Bashkirian), and the emplacement of aplitic dikes (273.7 ± 1.3 Ma) that crosscut the fabrics of the host rocks. White micas (illite) collected from both the Cape Spencer Formation and the Millican Lake Granite were dated via in situ 40Ar/39Ar to establish a minimum age of the alteration event associated with the gold deposition. The illites define a foliation Sa related to a first episode of deformation within the polyphase fold and thrust belt. The in situ 40Ar/39Ar ages vary from 260.2 ± 4.9 to 300.6 ± 6.4 Ma and reflect continuous mica crystallization, recrystallization, and/or fluid migration along a strongly sheared and brittle faulted area leading to isotopic resetting below the closure temperature. These data also attest to the near-contemporaneous nature of deformational events that produced overprinting relationships of folds and cleavages. This resulted in sub-microscopic and lattice defects associated with deformational microstructures that could have substantially contributed to Ar diffusion release. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Various styles of ore deposits may form from a single magmatic-hydrothermal system. Identification of a possible genetic link between different ore types in a region is not only of critical importance for a better understanding of the magmatic-hydrothermal processes, but can also help in successful mineral exploration. Both iron oxide-apatite (IOA) and iron skarn deposits are closely associated with intrusive rocks of intermediate to felsic in composition, but whether these two ore types can form from the same magmatic intrusion remains poorly understood. In this study, we present a comparative study between a newly identified subsurface IOA ore body located at the apex of a diorite porphyry and the iron skarn ore bodies located immediately above it in the Jinniu volcanic basin of the Daye district, Middle-Lower Yangtze River metallogenetic belt (MLYRMB), eastern China in order to highlight a genetic link between these two styles of mineralization. The IOA ores are dominated by Ti-rich magnetite with variable amounts of fluorapatite, diopside, and actinolite. This mineralogical assemblage is distinctly different from the iron skarn ores, which consist mainly of Ti-depleted magnetite and subordinate pre-ore garnet and diopside, and post-ore quartz, chlorite, calcite, and pyrite. In addition, magnetite from the IOA ores is characterized by well-developed ilmenite lamellae and has high concentrations of Ni, V, Co, and Ga, consistent with high temperature crystallization, whereas magnetite grains from the iron skarn ores usually exhibit oscillatory growth zones and contain much lower Ni, V, Co, and Ga, indicating their formation under relatively low temperatures. Titanite and fluorapatite from the IOA ores have U-Pb ages of 132.5 ± 2.4 Ma to 128.4 ± 3.0 Ma, which match a titanite U-Pb age for the associated iron skarn ores (132.3 ± 2.0 Ma), and are consistent with zircon U-Pb ages for the ore-hosting diorite porphyry (130.4 ± 0.7 Ma to 130.3 ± 0.5 Ma). This age consistency supports a possible genetic link among the diorite porphyry, IOA ores, and iron skarn ores. We propose that the IOA and skarn ores are the products of two consecutive mineralization stages of the same magmatic-hydrothermal system, involving a high-temperature, hypersaline fluid coexisting with the diorite porphyry magma during emplacement and a subsequent low temperature, diluted hydrothermal fluid. Other IOA and iron skarn deposits of similar ages (130 Ma) are found in a series of volcanic basins in the MLYRMB, which forms one of the world's largest IOA metallogenic belts.
