The goal of this review is to identify studies of self-regulated learning of students taking introductory physical science (chemistry, physics, and engineering) courses in college. This study analysed research in self-regulated learning published between the years of 2008-2018 with a focus on undergraduate learners in chemistry, physics, and engineering classrooms. It was found that there is a high degree of agreement in defining self-regulated learning, yet differences are present in the proposed factors that are most influential in creating a self-regulated learner. A majority of the studies report correlations between variables of motivation and metacognition. Additionally, less than half of the research studies included a measure of achievement and even less had an experimental design. This review proposes a need for more studies which include teaching of self-regulated skills for undergraduates in the physical sciences and investigating the relationship of the development of self-regulated learners as an integral facet of education in physical science classrooms.

In this review I explore the connections between debates about the transformation of work in a service-dominated economy and those about classed and gendered identities. I suggest they might usefully be connected in analyses of disadvantage and exclusion among working-class young people. Youth involvement in protest and unrest in English cities, as well as rising rates of unemployment, raise questions about the connections between labour market exclusion and young men's and women's construction and performance of acceptable versions of gendered identities. Performative identities are crucial in gaining employment, especially in the forms of low-waged interactive employment open to young people with few skills or little educational capital. Critically assesses the notion of a specifically feminist method and discusses the implication of the deconstruction of "woman" for feminist research and politics. Following up on a 10-year-old survey, examines women's status in British University geography departments. Surveyed 103 British higher education institutions in 1987-88. Finds relatively no change in numbers of females enrolled in geography courses. Shows a decline in women geographers at the postgraduate level. Offers explanations and proposals for action. (CH)

There I suggested that the City of London, the financial heart of the UK, is an arena riven by sexualized and gendered scripts: in other words capitalism is gendered. A decade or so later, these arguments seem just as relevant as the financial 'masters of the universe' are brought low, in part by their own behaviour. Here, I explore more explicitly the implications of testosterone-fuelled risk taking by both the traders and the chief executive officers of investment banks in the current world of casino capitalism. It shows how competition between foreign-born workers for jobs in the UK is currently being recast by changes in the jobs available, in forms of precarious labour market attachment and by new patterns of migration into the UK since EU expansion in 2004. The article documents the ways in which migrants with different sets of social characteristics (nationality, gender and skin colour) and different sets of legal entitlements (legal citizenship, EU membership and entitlement to residence) are differentially placed in their competition for some of the poorest jobs in the British economy, drawing on an empirical study of the migrant divisions of labour emerging in two significant sectors in the service industries. It concludes by arguing that new and deeper divisions are emerging between foreign-born workers in the UK. Resume Cet article vise aevaluer les rapports entre l'essor constant de formes de travail precaire et l'impact des migrants economiques en nombre croissant employes sur les marches du travail britanniques. La concurrence entre les travailleurs d'origine etrangere pour des emplois au Royaume-Uni subit actuellement une mutation du fait de l'evolution des postes disponibles, sous des formes d'integration precaire au marche du travail et selon de nouveaux modeles d'immigration depuis l'elargissement de l'UE en 2004. A partir d'une etude empirique sur les divisions du travail qui se dessinent chez les migrants dans deux importants secteurs de l'industrie des services, l'article met en evidence les manieres dont les migrants reunissant differentes caracteristiques sociales (nationalite, genre et couleur de peau) et differentes habilitations legales (citoyennete, ressortissant de l'UE et droit de sejour) se placent differemment dans la competition pour certains des postes les plus mediocres de l'economie britannique. This paper explores the everyday experiences of young white working-class men living in coastal towns badly affected by austerity programmes implemented in the UK since 2010. The lives and aspirations of marginal young men seldom feature in studies of the effects of economic crisis and austerity. These men are positioned at the intersection of several rhetorical constructions with contradictory and ambivalent affects. They are expected, and still expect, to become wage earners and providers, largely through their own efforts and self- improvement. A rhetoric of social mobility disguises structural inequality, producing a false promise of hope or 'cruel optimism' about future prospects. Simultaneously, young working- class men, especially those without employment, typically are constructed as a threat to (middle class) society, difficult or dangerous, and authors of their own disadvantage. We explore how young men, without regular work and often lacking family support, talk about everyday experiences, social relationships, feelings and emotions and hopes for the future in coastal towns with a particular place in the national imaginary. This article brings together debates about labour market change, work-based identities, growing concerns about the problem of working-class, low-achieving boys and the identification of a contemporary crisis of masculinity. It draws on a longitudinal study of young men in Sheffield and Cambridge--contrasting local labour markets in England--examining the initial workplace experiences of white working-class male school-leavers. Two individual cases are explored in depth, looking at initial working pathways in order to assess the attitudes and actions of young school leavers and their responses to the structural changes in the labour market that have transformed their opportunities compared with both their fathers' generation and their female peers. The implications for theoretical debates about working lives and the transformation of gender divisions are assessed.
