Abstract Background For interpretation of pulmonary function tests (PFTs), reference values based on sex, age, height and ethnicity are needed. In Norway, the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) reference values remain widely used, in spite of recommendations to implement the more recent Global Lung Function Initiative (GLI) reference values. Objective To assess the effects of changing from ECSC to GLI reference values for spirometry, DLCO and static lung volumes, using a clinical cohort of adults with a broad range in age and lung function. Methods PFTs from 577 adults (18–85 years, 45% females) included in recent clinical studies were used to compare ECSC and GLI reference values for FVC, FEV1, DLCO, TLC and RV. Percent predicted and lower limit of normal (LLN) were calculated. Bland-Altman plots were used to assess agreement between GLI and ECSC % predicted values. Results In both sexes, GLI % predicted values were lower for FVC and FEV1, and higher for DLCO and RV, compared to ECSC. Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a chronic progressive interstitial lung disease characterized by damage to the alveolar epithelium, leading to fibrosis and excessive accumulation of extracellular matrix in the interstitium of the lung. In the present study we performed high-resolution proteomic profiling of bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) from IPF patients and controls, and found that the complement pathway was highly upregulated in IPF. The proteins C5, C6, C7, C8, and C9, all of which are part of the complement end product, TCC, were all upregulated. We also found that TCC levels were increased in plasma among IPF patients compared to controls, after adjustment for age, sex and BMI [mean (SD) 0.62 (0.24) vs. 0.33 (0.10), p = 0.031]. These findings suggest a role for the complement system in the pathogenesis of IPF.

Damselfishes (family Pomacentridae) comprise approximately 400 species that play an important ecological role in temperate and coral reefs. Here, for the first time, we assemble and annotate the mitochondrial genome of Dascyllus trimaculatus, the three-spot dascyllus, a planktivorous damselfish that primarily recruits in anemones. The circular genome of D. trimaculatus is 16,967 bp in length and contains 13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNA genes, two ribosomal RNA genes, and a control region. Gene arrangement and codon usage is similar to reported mitochondrial genomes of other damselfish genera, and a phylogenetic analysis of a set of damselfish representatives is consistent with known evolutionary analyses.

Lymphoma survivors after high-dose therapy with autologous stem-cell transplant (HDT-ASCT) are at risk of several late effects, which might impair their health-related quality of life (HRQoL). We assessed the total late effect burden in this population, and how it affects HRQoL. All lymphoma survivors treated with HDT-ASCT as adults in Norway between 1987 and 2008 were identified, and 271 (68%) attended both a comprehensive clinical assessment and completed a questionnaire. Severity of 45 conditions in 12 organ-system categories were graded as mild, moderate, severe or life-threatening, according to a modified version of CTCAEv4.03. At a median of 8 years after HDT-ASCT, 98% of survivors had at least one moderate or more severe late effect and 56% had severe or life-threatening late effects. Fourteen percent had low, 39% medium and 47% high late effect burden, defined as having moderate or more severe late effects in 0-1, 2-3 and >3 organsystems, respectively. Female sex, increasing age, B-symptoms at diagnosis and >1 treatment line prior to HDT-ASCT were independently associated with having high late effect burden. The survivors had significantly poorer physical and mental HRQoL assessed by the Short Form-36 compared to age- and sex-matched controls. A common way of illustrating phylogeographic results is through the use of haplotype networks. While these networks help to visualize relationships between individuals, populations, and species, evolutionary studies often only quantitatively analyze genetic diversity among haplotypes and ignore other network properties. Here, we present a new metric, haplotype network branch diversity (HBd), as an easy way to quantifiably compare haplotype network complexity. Our metric builds off the logic of combining genetic and topological diversity to estimate complexity previously used by the published metric haplotype network diversity (HNd). However, unlike HNd which uses a combination of network features to produce complexity values that cannot be defined in probabilistic terms, thereby obscuring the values' implication for a sampled population, HBd uses frequencies of haplotype classes to incorporate topological information of networks, keeping the focus on the population and providing easy-to-interpret probabilistic values for randomly sampled individuals. The goal of this study is to introduce this more intuitive metric and provide an R script that allows researchers to calculate diversity and complexity indices from haplotype networks. A group of datasets, generated manually (model dataset) and based on published data (empirical dataset), were used to illustrate the behavior of HBd and both of its terms, haplotype diversity, and a new index called branch diversity. Results followed a predicted trend in both model and empirical datasets, from low metric values in simple networks to high values in complex networks. In short, the new combined metric joins genetic and topological diversity of haplotype networks, into a single complexity value. Based on our analysis, we recommend the use of HBd, as it makes direct comparisons of network complexity straightforward and provides probabilistic values that can readily discriminate situations that are difficult to resolve with available metrics.

Abstract Knowledge about the reproduction strategies of invasive species is fundamental for effective control. The invasive Fallopia taxa (Japanese knotweed s.l.) reproduce mainly clonally in Europe, and preventing spread of vegetative fragments is the most important control measure. However, high levels of genetic variation within the hybrid F. × bohemica indicate that hybridization and seed dispersal could be important. In Norway in northern Europe, it is assumed that these taxa do not reproduce sexually due to low temperatures in the autumn when the plants are flowering. The main objective of this study was to examine the genetic variation of invasive Fallopia taxa in selected areas in Norway in order to evaluate whether the taxa may reproduce by seeds in their most northerly distribution range in Europe. Fallopia stands from different localities in Norway were analyzed with respect to prevalence of taxa, and genetic variation within and between taxa was studied using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP). Taxonomic identification based on morphology corresponded with identification based on simple sequence repeats (SSR) and DNA ploidy levels (8× F. japonica, 6× F. × bohemica and 4× F. sachalinensis). No genetic variation within F. japonica was detected. All F. × bohemica samples belonged to a single AFLP genotype, but one sample had a different SSR genotype. Two SSR genotypes of F. sachalinensis were also detected. Extremely low genetic variation within the invasive Fallopia taxa indicates that these taxa do not reproduce sexually in the region, suggesting that control efforts can be focused on preventing clonal spread. Climate warming may increase sexual reproduction of invasive Fallopia taxa in northern regions. The hermaphrodite F. × bohemica is a potential pollen source for the male‐sterile parental species. Targeted eradication of the hybrid can therefore reduce the risk of increased sexual reproduction under future warmer climate.

Project Vigilancia de Embarazadas con Zika (VEZ), an intensified surveillance of pregnant women with symptoms of the Zika virus disease (ZVD) in Colombia, aimed to evaluate the relationship between symptoms of ZVD during pregnancy and adverse pregnancy, birth, and infant outcomes and early childhood neurodevelopmental outcomes. During May–November 2016, pregnant women in three Colombian cities who were reported with symptoms of ZVD to the national surveillance system, or with symptoms of ZVD visiting participating clinics, were enrolled in Project VEZ. Data from maternal and pediatric (up to two years of age) medical records were abstracted. Available maternal specimens were tested for the presence of the Zika virus ribonucleic acid and/or anti-Zika virus immunoglobulin antibodies. Of 1213 enrolled pregnant women with symptoms of ZVD, 1180 had a known pregnancy outcome. Results of the Zika virus laboratory testing were available for 569 (48.2%) pregnancies with a known pregnancy outcome though testing timing varied and was often distal to the timing of symptoms; 254 (21.5% of the whole cohort; 44.6% of those with testing results) were confirmed or presumptive positive for the Zika virus infection. Of pregnancies with a known outcome, 50 (4.2%) fetuses/infants had Zika-associated brain or eye defects, which included microcephaly at birth. Early childhood adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes were more common among those with Zika-associated birth defects than among those without and more common among those with laboratory evidence of a Zika virus infection compared with the full cohort. The proportion of fetuses/infants with any Zika-associated brain or eye defect was consistent with the proportion seen in other studies. Enhancements to Colombia’s existing national surveillance enabled the assessment of adverse outcomes associated with ZVD in pregnancy.

The oomycete pathogen Phytophthora cactorum causes crown rot, a major disease of cultivated strawberry. We report the draft genome of P. cactorum isolate 10300, isolated from symptomatic Fragaria x ananassa tissue. Our analysis revealed that there are a large number of genes encoding putative secreted effectors in the genome, including nearly 200 RxLR domain containing effectors, 77 Crinklers (CRN) grouped into 38 families, and numerous apoplastic effectors, such as phytotoxins (PcF proteins) and necrosis inducing proteins. As in other Phytophthora species, the genomic environment of many RxLR and CRN genes differed from core eukaryotic genes, a hallmark of the two-speed genome. We found genes homologous to known Phytophthora infestans avirulence genes including Avr1, Avr3b, Avr4, Avrblb1 and AvrSmira2 indicating effector sequence conservation between Phytophthora species of clade 1a and clade 1c. The reported P. cactorum genome sequence and associated annotations represent a comprehensive resource for avirulence gene discovery in other Phytophthora species from clade 1 and, will facilitate effector informed breeding strategies in other crops.

This study aims to evaluate the effect of space on the learners on the academic learning. The respondents of this study were the 30 grade five pupils of Benjamin Aguilar Elementary School. Results revealed that, as an entire group, the effects of space on academic learning was described as "very highly effective" with a mean of 4.7937 (SD = 0.21063). The effect of Space when grouped into sex, male respondents had a mean of 4.7931 which meant "very highly effective" and the female respondents had a mean of 4.8438 which meant "strongly agree". When grouped into Parents' Monthly Income, 10k and above had a mean of 4.8162 which meant "very highly effective" and 10k below had a mean of 4.8235 which meant "very highly effective". Results showed that there was no significant difference on the effects of space on the academic learning of grade 5 learners when grouped into sex with p-value of 0.62 (df-28)thus the null hypothesis of no significant difference was accepted. When grouped into family income, no significant differences was also noted in the effects of space in the academic learning of grade 5 learners. Abstract The transcription factor NRF2 plays an important role in many biological processes and is a promising therapeutic target for many disease states. NRF2 is highly expressed in the skin and is known to play a critical role in diabetic wound healing, a serious disease process for which treatment options are limited. However, many existing NRF2 activators display off-target effects due to their electrophilic mechanism, underscoring the need for alternative approaches. In this work, we investigated two recently described non-electrophilic NRF2 activators, ADJ-310 and PRL-295, and demonstrated their efficacy in vitro and in vivo in human keratinocytes and Lepr db/db diabetic mice. We also compared the downstream targets of PRL-295 to those of the widely used electrophilic NRF2 activator CDDO-Me by RNA sequencing. Both ADJ-310 and PRL-295 maintained human keratinocyte cell viability at increasing concentrations and maintained or improved cell proliferation over time. Both compounds also increased cell migration, improving in vitro wound closure. ADJ-310 and PRL-295 enhanced the oxidative stress response in vitro, and RNA-sequencing data showed that PRL-295 activated NRF2 with a narrower transcriptomic effect than CDDO-Me. In vivo, both ADJ-310 and PRL-295 improved wound healing in Lepr db/db diabetic mice and upregulated known downstream NRF2 target genes in treated tissue. These results highlight the non-electrophilic compounds ADJ-310 and PRL-295 as effective, innovative tools for investigating the function of NRF2. These compounds directly address the need for alternative NRF2 activators and offer a new approach to studying the role of NRF2 in human disease and its potential as a therapeutic across multiple disease states.

Abstract Introduction To minimise the risks associated with ionising radiation, it is necessary for all staff involved to employ specific techniques to reduce radiation exposure of the patient. These techniques include using compression during examinations of the pelvic region and lumbar spine, using a gonad shield, and asking women if they are pregnant. However, some staff do not use these techniques consistently. Increasing compliance requires determining why staff are non‐compliant. Thus, this study aims to qualitatively investigate why radiographers do not use these techniques. Methods This qualitative study is based on a cross‐sectional electronic survey with open‐ended questions. The data were analysed using an inductive qualitative content analysis with quantification of the findings. In total, 111 radiographers from 20 hospitals in Sweden participated. Results Three categories appear related to barriers that could obstruct the radiographer from using compression, gonad shields and asking about pregnancy: patient characteristics, interaction between the patient and the radiographer and issues related to the situation and examination. Conclusions The barriers to not using radiation protection measures varied depending on the specific measure. However, the barriers were mainly related to the patient experiencing pain, communication difficulties and cultural reasons. In addition, the lack of adequate and user‐friendly equipment was seen as a barrier to applying compression and using gonad shielding.

While nickel (Ni) electroplating has been successfully performed using ionic liquids in the past, few studies have reported on the trench-filling characteristics of this process useful for electroforming Ni. This study aimed to deposit and characterize the electrodeposited nickel using an ethaline-based nickel-plating bath with and without ethylenediamine (en). The conductivity of the plating bath was improved, while viscosity was slightly reduced upon the addition of en. Cyclic and linear sweep voltammetry revealed that en acted as a suppressor, significantly reducing the bath's plating rate. The Hull cell was used to determine the optimum operating current density for each bath. The additive-bearing bath produced more compact deposits, better deposit grain morphology, and improved trench-filling (> 95% filling) characteristics compared to its additive-free counterpart. The enhanced super-filling characteristics may be explained by the differential acceleration curvature-enhanced accumulation acceleration (CEAC) model. SEM analysis showed that the deposits possessed a particulate or nodular structure, whereas EDS confirmed the presence of Ni in the deposit. The Ni deposited using the bath without additives had larger particulate grains than those using the additive-bearing bath. Higher Ni amounts were obtained in the additive-laden bath. The use of additives is a promising approach for improving the super-filling characteristics of ionic liquid plating baths. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Damselfishes (Family: Pomacentridae) are a group of ecologically important, primarily coral reef fishes that include over 400 species. Damselfishes have been used as model organisms to study recruitment (anemonefishes), the effects of ocean acidification (spiny damselfish), population structure, and speciation (Dascyllus). The genus Dascyllus includes a group of small-bodied species, and a complex of relatively larger bodied species, the Dascyllus trimaculatus species complex that is comprised of several species including D. trimaculatus itself. The three-spot damselfish, D. trimaculatus, is a widespread and common coral reef fish species found across the tropical Indo-Pacific. Here, we present the first-genome assembly of this species. This assembly contains 910 Mb, 90% of the bases are in 24 chromosome-scale scaffolds, and the Benchmarking Universal Single-Copy Orthologs score of the assembly is 97.9%. Our findings confirm previous reports of a karyotype of 2n=47 in D. trimaculatus in which one parent contributes 24 chromosomes and the other 23. We find evidence that this karyotype is the result of a heterozygous Robertsonian fusion. We also find that the D. trimaculatus chromosomes are each homologous with single chromosomes of the closely related clownfish species, Amphiprion percula. This assembly will be a valuable resource in the population genomics and conservation of Damselfishes, and continued studies of the karyotypic diversity in this clade. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Natural glauconite, as a mixed-layered clay mineral, was subjected to exfoliation processes, producing silicate monolayers or individual sheets that were further modified with methanol into methoxy exfoliated glauconite (Mth/EXG). The structure was assessed as an enhanced adsorbent for three types of common water contaminants, including phosphate (PO43-), safranin-O dye (SFR), and cadmium metal ions (Cd2+). The Mth/EXG structure achieved promising adsorption capacities at the saturation points equal to 269.9 mg/g for PO43-, 312 mg/g for SFR, and 234.5 mg/g for Cd2+ which are significantly better than the reported values for several studied adsorbents of higher costs and complex production procedures. The adsorption processes and the predicted regulated mechanisms in terms of the adsorbate/adsorbent interface were illustrated based on the steric and energetic findings that correspond to the applied monolayer equilibrium model of one energy site. The structure displays active site densities of 82.5 mg/g (PO43-), 136.3 mg/g (SFR), and 83.4 mg/g (Cd2+), which illustrate the high uptake performance of SFR. Also, the steric parameters reflected the suitability of each existing site to be filled with 4 ions of PO43-, SFR, and Cd2+. The adsorption energy (less than 40 kJ/mol) in conjunction with free adsorption energy from D-R model (8–16 kJ/mol) and steric parameters validate the dominant impact of the multi-ionic physical mechanisms (hydrogen bonding and van der Waals forces), in addition to the assistant impact of some weak chemical processes that might be assigned to the formed inner-sphere complex. Also, these reactions all occurred spontaneously with exothermic behaviors according to the thermodynamic functions. Additionally, the structure exhibit significant affinity for the studied pollutants even in the existing of completive chemical including anions, cations and organic molecules.

High-energy-density liquid fuels can be utilized as an energetic supplement to conventional fuels and are essential for volume-limited aerospace vehicles to boost payload and flying range. JP-10 has attracted much attention because of its high density, flash point, high volumetric heat, and low freezing point. Here we report the hydroisomerization of endo-tetrahydrodicyclopentadiene to exo-tetrahydrodicyclopentadiene (the main component of JP-10) was investigated over the TiO2/SO4 supported Ba(10 %)/Se(5–20 %) catalysts. This work aims to examine changes in continuous processing settings to maximize exo-THDCPD production, selectivity, and conversion. It was discovered that the synthesized TiO2/SO4/Ba(10 %)/Se(5–20 %) heterogeneous catalysts were novel, more effective, affordable, environmentally friendly, and simple to produce. The catalyst’s physicochemical characteristics were examined using FT-IR, BET, XRD, HR-SEM, HR-TEM, TGA and NH3-TPD. The produced TiO2/SO4/Ba(10 %)/Se(5–20 %) nano-catalysts have good catalytic activity and a wide range of active Lewis and Brønsted acid sites. Evaluation of the isomerization of endo-THDCPD to exo-THDCPD was conducted in a high-pressure fixed-bed continuous reactor operating at 200 °C, 20 bar of pressure, and 4.0mol/h of H2 flow rate. According to the investigations, the synthesized catalyst with a 15 % Se load performs exceptionally well, exhibiting 100 % conversion, 98.5 % selectivity, and 98.5 % yield at an H2 flow rate of 10 ml/min. The isomerized product is used in Jet Propellant-10, a high-density fuel. Under ideal circumstances, exo-THDCPD with a high degree of purity (>98 wt%) was produced without the need for any sort of separation technique.

This study investigated the effect of supplementation of Malva sylvestris leaf powder (MSLP) on the production performance of broiler chicken. Ven Cobb broiler chicks (240 day-old male chicks) were distributed randomly into four treatments, each replicated four times, with 15 birds per replicate. The diets formulated were T1 (control) given basal diet only, T2 (basal diet +1.0% MSLP), T3 (basal diet +1.5% MSLP), and T4 (basal diet +2.0% MSLP). The highest improvement of 3.83% in the average daily gain (ADG) was recorded in the T3 group fed 1.5% Malva powder in the diet compared to the control (P = 0.009). The average daily feed intake (ADFI) tended to decrease with an increase in the dose of MSLP in the diet, with the lowest feed intake in the T4 group fed 2% MSLP. During the overall period (7–42 days), the feed/gain (F/G) ratio reduced significantly (P = 0.048) in the T3 and T4 groups compared to the control. The dressed and breast meat yield was found to be significantly (P < 0.05) higher in the T3 group, with no significant change (P > 0.05) in the thigh yield. The changes in the pH and water-holding capacity (WHC) of breast meat were found to be non-significant (p > 0.05) between the control and various other treatments. Thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS) were significantly (P < 0.05) decreased in the T3 and T4 groups. There was no negative effect of including MSLP in the diet on the color coordinates of breast meat among different treatments. Compared to the control, the serum immunoglobulin values increased significantly (P < 0.05) in the T3 and T4 groups. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) showed no difference between various treatments; however, malondialdehyde (MDA) decreased significantly (P < 0.05) according to dietary treatments. Serum cortisol increased significantly (P < 0.05) in the T4 group compared to other treatments. The inclusion of Malva powder in the diet at the 2% level significantly (P < 0.05) decreased the coliform count compared to the control birds. Supplementation with Malva powder resulted in a significant (P < 0.05) increase in the villus height-to-crypt depth (VH:CD) ratio of broiler birds in the T3 and T4 groups. In conclusion, MSLP supplementation at 1.5% and 2% resulted in improved production performance of broiler chicken.

Abstract Background Potato virus Y (PVY) is among the economically most damaging viral pathogen in production of potato (Solanum tuberosum) worldwide. The gene Ry sto derived from the wild potato relative Solanum stoloniferum confers extreme resistance to PVY. Results The presence and diversity of Ry sto were investigated in wild relatives of potato (298 genotypes representing 29 accessions of 26 tuber-bearing Solanum species) using PacBio amplicon sequencing. A total of 55 unique Rysto-like sequences were identified in 72 genotypes representing 12 accessions of 10 Solanum species and six resistant controls (potato cultivars Alicja, Bzura, Hinga, Nimfy, White Lady and breeding line PW363). The 55 Rysto-like sequences showed 89.87 to 99.98% nucleotide identity to the Ry sto reference gene, and these encoded in total 45 unique protein sequences. While Rysto-like26 identified in Alicja, Bzura, White Lady and Rysto-like16 in PW363 encode a protein identical to the Rysto reference, the remaining 44 predicted Rysto-like proteins were 65.93 to 99.92% identical to the reference. Higher levels of diversity of the Rysto-like sequences were found in the wild relatives of potato than in the resistant control cultivars. The TIR and NB-ARC domains were the most conserved within the Rysto-like proteins, while the LRR and C-JID domains were more variable. Several Solanum species, including S. antipoviczii and S. hougasii, showed resistance to PVY. This study demonstrated Hyoscyamus niger, a Solanaceae species distantly related to Solanum, as a host of PVY. Conclusions The new Rysto-like variants and the identified PVY resistant potato genotypes are potential resistance sources against PVY in potato breeding. Identification of H. niger as a host for PVY is important for cultivation of this plant, studies on the PVY management, its ecology, and migrations. The amplicon sequencing based on PacBio SMRT and the following data analysis pipeline described in our work may be applied to obtain the nucleotide sequences and analyze any full-length genes from any, even polyploid, organisms.

In recent years, plastic has emerged as a widely used material, replacing traditional materials across various industries due to its versatility and convenience. However, this extensive adoption of plastic has resulted in significant environmental challenges, especially in managing mixed plastic waste. To address this, energy recovery technologies have been developed to offer alternative recycling methods for plastic waste. This study specifically focuses on producing hydroprocessed plastic pyrolysis oil from mixed waste plastic to create environmentally compliant fuel. The scrutiny compares the resultant fuel with diesel using hydroprocessing techniques and catalytic pyrolysis. Physicochemical characterization and GC–MS analysis compare the properties and compositions of MPPO, HPO, and diesel fuel. The waste polymers, which included HDPE, PP, and LDPE, were hydroprocessed and pyrolysed using platinum sulphate on zirconia oxide supports to produce a diesel equivalent. The alkane content of the blended fuel that was produced was 95 % that of diesel. The n-alkane levels in the carbon number ranges C11–C15 and C16–C20 were, respectively, 25 % and 10 % lower than diesel. But as one might expect from mixing heavy fuel oil, there were substantially more n-alkanes with carbon numbers of C21–C25. The combined fuel contained 10 % fewer isoalkanes than diesel. Ships can be powered by low-carbon fuel that was created by combining hydroprocessed fuel with commercial heavy fuel oil. Since the alternative fuel will emit considerably fewer emissions, the maritime industry can choose to replace it in order to help fulfil.
