1. Calorimetric evidence for two phase transitions in Ba1−x K x Fe2As2 with fermion pairing and quadrupling states

Abstract: Abstract Materials that break multiple symmetries allow the formation of four-fermion condensates above the superconducting critical temperature (T c). Such states can be stabilized by phase fluctuations. Recently, a fermionic quadrupling condensate that breaks the Z 2 time-reversal symmetry was reported in Ba1−xKxFe2As2. A phase transition to the new state of matter should be accompanied by a specific heat anomaly at the critical temperature where Z 2 time-reversal symmetry is broken ( $${T}_{{{{{{{{\rm{c}}}}}}}}}^{{{{{{{{\rm{Z2}}}}}}}}} \, > \, {T}_{{{{{{{{\rm{c}}}}}}}}}$$ T c Z2 > T c ). Here, we report on detecting two anomalies in the specific heat of Ba1−xKxFe2As2 at zero magnetic field. The anomaly at the higher temperature is accompanied by the appearance of a spontaneous Nernst effect, indicating the breakdown of Z 2 symmetry. The second anomaly at the lower temperature coincides with the transition to a zero-resistance state, indicating the onset of superconductivity. Our data provide the first example of the appearance of a specific heat anomaly above the superconducting phase transition associated with the broken time-reversal symmetry due to the formation of the novel fermion order.

2. Superconductivity induced by gate-driven hydrogen intercalation in the charge-density-wave compound 1T-TiSe2

Abstract: Abstract Hydrogen (H) plays a key role in the near-to-room temperature superconductivity of hydrides at megabar pressures. This suggests that H doping could have similar effects on the electronic and phononic spectra of materials at ambient pressure as well. Here, we demonstrate the non-volatile control of the electronic ground state of titanium diselenide (1T-TiSe2) via ionic liquid gating-driven H intercalation. This protonation induces a superconducting phase, observed together with a charge-density wave through most of the phase diagram, with nearly doping-independent transition temperatures. The H-induced superconducting phase is possibly gapless-like and multi-band in nature, in contrast with those induced in TiSe2 via copper, lithium, and electrostatic doping. This unique behavior is supported by ab initio calculations showing that high concentrations of H dopants induce a full reconstruction of the bandstructure, although with little coupling between electrons and high-frequency H phonons. Our findings provide a promising approach for engineering the ground state of transition metal dichalcogenides and other layered materials via gate-controlled protonation.

Abstract: Iron-based superconductors are under study for their potential for high-field applications due to their excellent superconducting properties such as low structural anisotropy, large upper critical fields and low field dependence of the critical current density. Between them, Fe(Se,Te) is simple to be synthesized and can be fabricated as a coated conductor through laser ablation on simple metallic templates. In order to make all the steps simple and fast, we have applied the spark plasma sintering technique to synthesize bulk Fe(Se,Te) to obtain quite dense polycrystals in a very short time. The resulting polycrystals are very well connected and show excellent superconducting properties, with a critical temperature onset of about 16 K. In addition, when used as targets for pulsed laser ablation, good thin films are obtained with a critical current density above 105 A cm−2 up to 16 T.

Abstract: Copper-based chalcogenides have emerged as promising thermoelectric materials due to their high thermoelectric performance, tunable transport properties, earth abundance and low toxicity. We have presented an overview of experimental results and first-principal calculations investigating the thermoelectric properties of various polymorphs of Cu2SnS3 (CTS), Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS), and Cu2ZnSnSe4 (CZTSe) synthesized by high-energy reactive mechanical alloying (ball milling). Of particular interest are the disordered polymorphs of these materials, which exhibit phonon-glass–electron-crystal behavior—a decoupling of electron and phonon transport properties. The interplay of cationic disorder and nanostructuring leads to ultra-low thermal conductivities while enhancing electronic transport. These beneficial transport properties are the consequence of a plethora of features, including trap states, anharmonicity, rattling, and conductive surface states, both topologically trivial and non-trivial. Based on experimental results and computational methods, this report aims to elucidate the details of the electronic and lattice transport properties, thereby confirming that the higher thermoelectric (TE) performance of disordered polymorphs is essentially due to their complex crystallographic structures. In addition, we have presented synchrotron X-ray diffraction (SR-XRD) measurements and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations of the root-mean-square displacement (RMSD) in these materials, confirming anharmonicity and bond inhomogeneity for disordered polymorphs.

5. Hydrodynamical description for magneto-transport in the strange metal phase of Bi-2201

Abstract: High-temperature superconductors are strongly coupled systems which present a complicated phase diagram with many coexisting phases. This makes it difficult to understand the mechanism which generates their singular transport properties. Hydrodynamics, which mostly relies on the symmetries of the system without referring to any specific microscopic mechanism, constitutes a promising framework to analyze these materials. In this paper we show that, in the strange metal phase of the cuprates, a whole set of transport coefficients are described by a universal hydrodynamic framework once one accounts for the effects of quantum critical charge-density waves. We corroborate our theoretical prediction by measuring the DC transport properties of Bi-2201 close to optimal doping, proving the validity of our approach. Our argument can be used as a consistency check to understand the universality class governing the behavior of high-temperature cuprate superconductors.

6. The influence of the in-plane lattice constant on the superconducting transition temperature of FeSe0.7Te0.3 thin films

Abstract: Epitaxial Fe(Se,Te) thin films were prepared by pulsed laser deposition on (La0.18Sr0.82)(Al0.59Ta0.41)O3 (LSAT), CaF2-buffered LSAT and bare CaF2 substrates, which exhibit an almost identical in-plane lattice parameter. The composition of all Fe(Se,Te) films were determined to be FeSe0.7Te0.3 by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, irrespective of the substrate. Albeit the lattice parameters of all templates have comparable values, the in-plane lattice parameter of the FeSe0.7Te0.3 films varies significantly. We found that the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of FeSe0.7Te0.3 thin films is strongly correlated with their a-axis lattice parameter. The highest Tc of over 19 K was observed for the film on bare CaF2 substrate, which is related to unexpectedly large in-plane compressive strain originating mostly from the thermal expansion mismatch between the FeSe0.7Te0.3 film and the substrate.

Abstract: Revealing the universal behaviors of iron-based superconductors (FBS) is important to elucidate the microscopic theory of superconductivity. In this work, we investigate the effect of in-plane strain on the slope of the upper critical field H _c2 at the superconducting transition temperature T _c (i.e. −d H _c2 /d T ) for FeSe _0.7 Te _0.3 thin films. The in-plane strain tunes T _c in a broad range, while the composition and disorder are almost unchanged. We show that −d H _c2 /d T scales linearly with T _c , indicating that FeSe _0.7 Te _0.3 follows the same universal behavior as observed for pnictide FBS. The observed behavior is consistent with a multiband superconductivity paired by interband interaction such as sign change s _± superconductivity.

Abstract: The electronic ground state of iron-based materials is unusually sensitive to electronic correlations. Among others, its delicate balance is profoundly affected by the insertion of magnetic impurities in the FeAs layers. Here, we address the effects of Fe-to-Mn substitution in the non-superconducting Sm-1111 pnictide parent compound via a comparative study of SmFe1-xMnxAsO samples with x(Mn) = 0.05 and 0.10. Magnetization, Hall effect, and muon-spin spectroscopy data provide a coherent picture, indicating a weakening of the commensurate Fe spin-density-wave (SDW) order, as shown by the lowering of the SDW transition temperature TSDW with increasing Mn content, and the unexpected appearance of another magnetic order, occurring at T∗≈ 10 and 20 K for x= 0.05 and 0.10, respectively. We attribute the new magnetic transition at T∗, occurring well inside the SDW phase, to a reorganization of the Fermi surface due to Fe-to-Mn substitutions. These give rise to enhanced magnetic fluctuations along the incommensurate wavevector Q2= (π± δ, π± δ) , further increased by the RKKY interactions among Mn impurities., Scientific Reports, 11, ISSN:2045-2322

Zuritathe FCC Collaboration, In response to the 2013 Update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics (EPPSU), the Future Circular Collider (FCC) study was launched as a world-wide international collaboration hosted by CERN. The FCC study covered an energy-frontier hadron collider (FCC-hh), a highest-luminosity high-energy lepton collider (FCC-ee), the corresponding 100km tunnel infrastructure, as well as the physics opportunities of these two colliders, and a high-energy LHC, based on FCC-hh technology. This document constitutes the fourth volume of the FCC Conceptual Design Report, devoted to the High-Energy Large Hadron Collider HE-LHC. It summarizes the HE-LHC physics discovery opportunities, presents the HE-LHC accelerator design, performance reach, and operation plan, discusses the underlying technologies, the civil engineering and technical infrastructure, and also sketches a possible implementation. Combining ingredients from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the high-luminosity LHC upgrade and adding novel technologies and approaches, the HE-LHC design aims at a hadron collider with about twice the centre-of-mass collision energy that the LHC can reach. Its performance aims at exploring physics beyond the Standard Model, signi cantly extending the LHC's direct and indirect sensitivity to new physics and discoveries.

Abstract: High temperature superconductors are strongly coupled systems which present a complicated phase diagram with many coexisting phases. This makes it difficult to understand the mechanism which generates their singular transport properties. Hydrodynamics, which mostly relies on the symmetries of the system without referring to any specific microscopic mechanism, constitutes a promising framework to analyze these materials. In this paper we show that in the strange metal phase of the cuprates, a whole set of transport coefficients are described by a universal hydrodynamic framework once one accounts for the effects of quantum critical charge density waves. We corroborate our theoretical prediction by measuring the DC transport properties of Bi-2201 close to optimal doping, proving the validity of our approach. Abstract: The epitaxial growth of Zr-doped CeO2 (CZO) films by chemical solution deposition (CSD) on single crystal substrates such as Al2O3, SrTiO3 and Y2O3-stabilized ZrO2 (YSZ) and their use as buffer layers for Fe(Se,Te) film growth are reported. The growth of 30 nm thin CZO films is mostly dominated by dewetting issues, leading to highly incomplete substrate coverage due to the strong tendency of CZO grains to agglomerate. This effect is less severe on YSZ substrate and, in addition, can be fully controlled by setting the deposition temperature at 950 °C and operating under Ar-H2 reducing atmosphere. These conditions promote the growth of epitaxial and compact CZO films on YSZ, showing a flat surface morphology with root-mean-square roughness around 2.5 nm. Preliminary results on Fe(Se,Te) film deposited by pulsed laser deposition on CZO-buffered YSZ are reported. Although good epitaxial growth is achieved on CZO buffer layer, Fe(Se,Te) films exhibit poor superconducting properties. On the other hand, Fe(Se,Te) films show excellent properties when a seed layer is used, exhibiting a sharp superconducting transition at about 17 K and a critical current density exceeding 1 MA cm-2 at 4.2 K in self field. The main role of the seed layer, consisting of a non-superconducting Fe(Se,Te) film, is to favour the crystal and chemical matching between buffer layer and film, allowing for the growth of high-quality superconducting Fe(Se,Te) at deposition temperature as low as 200 °C. In perspective of applications, this result is a significant step towards process simplification and cost reduction of Fe(Se,Te)-based coated conductor technology development, being the first demonstration of superconducting Fe(Se,Te) films grown on CSD buffer layer.

Abstract: Anisotropy of transport and magnetic properties of parent compounds of iron based superconductors is a key ingredient of superconductivity. In this work, we investigate in-plane and out-of-plane properties, namely thermal, electric, thermoelectric transport and magnetic susceptibility in a high quality BaFe2As2 single crystal of the 122 parent compound, using a combined experimental and theoretical approach. Combining the ab initio calculation of the band structure and the measured in-plane and out-of-plane resistivity, we evaluate the scattering rates which turn out to be strongly anisotropic and determined by spin excitations in the antiferromagnetic state. The observed anisotropy of thermal conductivity is discussed in terms of anisotropy of sound velocities which we estimate to be [Formula: see text]. Remarkably, we find that thermal conductivity is characterized by a sizeable electronic contribution at low temperature, which is ascribed to the high purity of our crystal.

Abstract: At the present day, iron-based superconductors (IBS) can be considered as competitors of cuprates for the fabrication of superconducting cables for high field application in the presence of particle irradiation. In particular, it has been demonstrated that 11-IBS are very robust against proton irradiation. In this paper, we analyze the effect of this kind of irradiation on the anisotropy of superconducting and pinning properties of Fe(Se,Te) thin films grown on CaF2. By electrical transport measurements, we evaluate the upper critical field as a function of the temperature and the pinning activation energy as function of the applied magnetic field, for different orientation between the material crystal structure and the field itself, in pristine and irradiated samples. The aim is to recognize if and how proton irradiation modifies the anisotropy of the material properties.

Abstract: In this paper, the feasibility of producing Fe(Se,Te)-coated conductors on cost-effective, unbuffered Invar 36 substrates is studied. A suitable substrate with a sharp {001} texture and a misorientation angle lower than 10° was developed, and the possibility of growing epitaxial thin films without any buffer layer was demonstrated. It was also shown that the presence of a Fe(Se,Te) seed layer can improve the in- and out-of-plane orientation of the film. A high-resolution scanning electron microscopy study was performed, and the absence of a superconducting transition has been attributed to Ni poisoning based on X-ray microanalysis.

Abstract: In this paper we explore the effects of 3.5 MeV proton irradiation on Fe(Se,Te) thin films grown on CaF2. In particular, we carry out a systematic experimental investigation with different irradiation fluences up to 7.30x10^16 cm^-2 and different proton implantation depths, in order to clarify whether and to what extent the critical current is enhanced or suppressed, what are the effects of irradiation on the critical temperature, the resistivity and the critical magnetic fields, and finally what is the role played by the substrate in this context. We find that the effect of irradiation on superconducting properties is generally small as compared to the case of other iron-based superconductors. Such effect is more evident on the critical current density Jc, while it is minor on the transition temperature Tc, on the normal state resistivity and on the upper critical field Hc2 up to the highest fluences explored in this work. In addition, our analysis shows that when protons implant in the substrate far from the superconducting film, the critical current can be enhanced up to 50% of the pristine value at 7 T and 12 K, while there is no appreciable effect on critical temperature and critical fields together with a slight decrease in resistivity. On the contrary, when the implantation layer is closer to the film-substrate interface, both critical current and temperature show a decrease accompanied by an enhancement of the resistivity and the lattice strain. This result evidences that possible modifications induced by irradiation in the substrate may affect the superconducting properties of the film via lattice strain. Abstract: The interplay between magnetism and superconductivity is tuned as a function of the external pressure in LnFeAsO[Formula: see text]Fx at [Formula: see text] values close to the appearance of superconductivity for lanthanide ion Ln=La[Formula: see text]Y[Formula: see text] and Ce. The results show that in these compounds, both superconductivity and magnetism are reinforced by pressure. Furthermore, muon spin rotation and relaxation measurements reveal qualitative remarkable differences among the samples: Ln=Ce displays nanoscopic coexistence of magnetism and superconductivity in the same volume fraction while Ln=La[Formula: see text]Y[Formula: see text] shows macroscopic phase separation. The Ln-dependent results can be due to a complex combination of the external and chemical pressure, the latter being driven by the different average ionic Ln radius.

Abstract: In this Letter we report high-resolution synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction and transmission electron microscope analysis of Mn-substituted LaFeAsO samples, demonstrating that a static incommensurate modulated structure develops across the low-temperature orthorhombic phase, whose modulation wave-vector depends on the Mn content. The incommensurate structural distortion is likely originating from a charge-density-wave instability, a periodic modulation of the density of conduction electrons associated with a modulation of the atomic positions. Our results add a new component in the physics of Fe-based superconductors, indicating that the density wave ordering is charge-driven., Comment: To be published in the Physical Review Letters

Abstract: Among the recently discovered Fe-based superconducting compounds, the Ba-122 phase has proved to be the more attracting for the development of powder in tube (PIT) processed conductors. In fact, after some years of development, critical current densities ( Jc ) of about 105 A/cm2 at 4.2 K and magnetic fields up to 10 T have been obtained in (Ba0.6K0.4)Fe2As 2, PIT wires and tapes. To develop a safe upscaling method, the synthesis of the powders is a crucial point. In order to avoid the use of highly reactive K we have developed BaFe2(P1-xAsx)2 PIT tapes. This compound has proved to be very stable and in form of crystals and thin films exhibits excellent critical current: We succeeded in manufacturing PIT tapes with this phase with Jc values of about 103 A/cm2 at 4.2 K in self-field. Detailed microstructural and chemical investigations of the samples have been performed by high-resolution TEM, scanning TEM, and electron energy loss spectrometry analysis. A deformation network inside the grains that can induce strong pinning has been observed. However, chemical inhomogeneities at the grain boundaries are also present, which limit the transport current.

Abstract: Herewith, we review the available experimental data of thermoelectric transport properties of iron-based superconductors and parent compounds. We discuss possible physical mechanisms into play in determining the Seebeck effect, from whence one can extract information about Fermi surface reconstruction and Lifshitz transitions, multiband character, coupling of charge carriers with spin excitations and its relevance in the unconventional superconducting pairing mechanism, nematicity, quantum critical fluctuations close to the optimal doping for superconductivity, correlation. Additional information is obtained from the analysis of the Nernst effect, whose enhancement in parent compounds must be related partially to multiband transport and low Fermi level, but mainly to the presence of Dirac cone bands at the Fermi level. In the superconducting compounds, large Nernst effect in the normal state is explained in terms of fluctuating precursors of the spin density wave state, while in the superconducting state it mirrors the usual vortex liquid dissipative regime. A comparison between the phenomenology of thermoelectric behavior of different families of iron-based superconductors and parent compounds allows to evidence the key differences and analogies, thus providing clues on the rich and complex physics of these fascinating unconventional superconductors.

Abstract: The deliberate insertion of magnetic Mn dopants in the Fe sites of the optimally doped ${\mathrm{SmFeAsO}}_{0.88}{\mathrm{F}}_{0.12}$ iron-based superconductor can modify in a controlled way its electronic properties. The resulting phase diagram was investigated across a wide range of manganese contents ($x$) by means of muon-spin spectroscopy ($\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{SR}$), both in zero and in transverse fields, to probe the magnetic and the superconducting order, respectively. The pure superconducting phase (at $xl0.03$) is replaced by a crossover region at intermediate Mn values ($0.03\ensuremath{\le}xl0.08$), where superconductivity coexists with static magnetic order. After completely suppressing superconductivity for $x=0.08$, a further increase in Mn content reinforces the natural tendency towards antiferromagnetic correlations among the magnetic Mn ions. The sharp drop of ${T}_{c}$ and the induced magnetic order in the presence of magnetic disorder/dopants, such as Mn, are both consistent with a recent theoretical model of unconventional superconductors (M. N. Gastiasoro et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 117, 257002 (2016)), which includes correlation-enhanced RKKY couplings between the impurity moments.

Abstract: Among the recently discovered Fe-based superconducting compounds, the (K,Ba)Fe2As2 phase is attracting great attention within the scientific community interested in conductor developments. In fact, after some years of development, critical current densities Jc of about 105 A cm−2 at fields up to more than 10 T have been obtained in powder-in-tube (PIT) processed wires and tapes. Here we explore the crucial points in the wire/tape fabrication by means of the ex situ PIT method. We focus on scaling-up processes, which are crucial for industrial fabrication. We analyzed the effects on the microstructure of the different heat and mechanical treatments. By an extensive microstructural analysis correlated with the transport properties, we addressed the issues concerning the phase purity, internal porosity, and crack formation in the superconducting core region. Our best conductors, with a filling factor of about 30% heat-treated at 800 °C, exhibited Tc = 38 K, the highest value measured in this kind of superconducting tape. The microstructure analysis shows clean and well-connected grain boundaries but rather poor density: the measured Jc of about 3 104 A cm−2 in the self field is suppressed by less than a factor of seven at 7 T. Such not-yet-optimized Jc values can be accounted for by the reduced density, while the moderate in-field suppression and a rather high n-factor confirm the high homogeneity and uniformity of these tapes.

Abstract: FeSe0.5Te0.5 thin films were grown by pulsed laser deposition on CaF2, LaAlO3 and MgO substrates and structurally and electro-magnetically characterized in order to study the influence of the substrate on their transport properties. The in-plane lattice mismatch between FeSe0.5Te0.5 bulk and the substrates shows no influence on the lattice parameters of the films, whereas the type of substrates affects the crystalline quality of the films and, therefore, the superconducting properties. The film on MgO showed an extra peak in the angular dependence of critical current density Jc({\theta}) at {\theta} = 180{\deg} (H || c), which arises from c-axis defects as confirmed by transmission electron microscopy. In contrast, no Jc({\theta}) peaks for H || c were observed in films on CaF2 and LaAlO3. Jc({\theta}) can be scaled successfully for both films without c-axis correlated defects by the anisotropic Ginzburg-Landau (AGL) approach with appropriate anisotropy ratio {\gamma}J. The scaling parameter {\gamma}J is decreasing with decreasing temperature, which is different from what we observed in FeSe0.5Te0.5 films on Fe-buffered MgO substrates., Comment: accepted for publication in SUST

Abstract: Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x (Bi-2212) superconducting long-length wires are mainly limited in obtaining high critical currents densities (JC) by the internal gas pressure generated during the heat treatment, which expands the wire diameter and dedensifies the superconducting filaments. Several ways have been developed to increase the density of the superconducting filaments and therefore decreasing the bubble density: much higher critical currents have been reached always acting on the final as-drawn wires. We here try to pursue the same goal of having a denser wire by acting on the deformation technique, through a partial use of the groove-rolling at different wire processing stages. Such technique has a larger powders compaction power, is straightforwardly adaptable to long length samples, and allows the fabrication of samples with round, square or rectangular shape depending on the application requirements. In this paper we demonstrate the capability of this technique to increase the density in Bi-2212 wires which leads to a three-fold increase in Jc with respect to drawn wires, making this approach very promising for fabricating Bi-2212 wires for high magnetic field magnets, i.e. above 25 T.

Abstract: We report an infrared spectroscopy study of a 200 nm thick FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$ film grown on LaAlO$_3$ with T$_c$=13.7 K. We analyze the 20 K normal state absolute reflectance R$_N$ measured over a broad infrared range and the reflectance ratio R$_S$/R$_N$, R$_S$ being the superconducting state reflectance, measured at 6 K in the terahertz range down to 12 cm$^{-1}$. We show that the normal state model conductivity is given by two Drude components, one of which much broader and intense than the other. In the superconducting state, we find that a gap $\Delta$=37$\pm$3 cm$^{-1}$ opens up in the narrow Drude band only, while the broad Drude band results to be ungapped, at least in the explored spectral range. Abstract: The synthesis of a series of layered iron arsenides Ca1?xRExFeAs2(112) was attempted by heating at 1000 ?C under a high pressure of 2 GPa. The 112 phase successfully forms with rare earth (RE) = La, Ce, Nd, Sm, Eu, and Gd, while RE-free samples do not contain the 112 phase. While a Ce-doped sample does not show superconductivity, La-, Pr-, Nd-, Sm-, Eu-, and Gd-doped samples show superconducting transition temperatures of 24.5, 13.2, 11.9, 11.6, 9.3, and 12.6 K, respectively, in magnetization measurements. Their Tc and Fe?Fe interlayer distances decreased with decreasing ionic radii of RE, but there are exceptions.

Abstract: We have studied the electronic and magnetic properties of SmFe(1-x)RuxAsO0.85F0.15 (x = 0, 0.05, 0.25, 0.33, 0.5) by high-resolution x-ray absorption and x-ray emission spectroscopy. The local Fe magnetic moment (μ) tends to decrease for a small Ru substitution, but it shows a clear increase with further substitution. It appears that impurity scattering prevails in reducing the μ with small Ru substitution due to an extended Ru d-band. A nanoscale phase separation, that decouples the FeAs layers from the spacer layers, drives the increase of μ at higher Ru substitution. The results provide important information on nanoscale phase separation due to isoelectronic substitution in the active layers of iron-based 1111-superconductors and its effect on the local magnetic properties.

Abstract: We report on the isotropic pinning obtained in epitaxial Fe(Se,Te) thin films grown on CaF2(001) substrate. High critical current density values – larger than 1 MA/cm2 in self field and liquid helium – are reached together with a very weak dependence on the magnetic field and a complete isotropy. Analysis through transmission electron microscopy evidences the presence of defects looking like lattice disorder at a very small scale, between 5 and 20 nm, which are thought to be responsible for such isotropic behavior in contrast to what was observed on SrTiO3, where defects parallel to the c-axis enhance pinning in that direction.

Abstract: Local structure of SmFe$_{1-x}$Ru$_x$AsO$_{0.85}$F$_{0.15}$ ($x$ = 0.0, 0.05, 0.25 and 0.5) superconductors has been investigated by temperature dependent As $K$-edge extended x-ray absorption fine structure. The effect of Ru substitution remains confined to the iron-arsenide layer but neither the static disorder nor the Fe-As bond strength suffers any change for $x \le$ 0.25. With further Ru substitution the static disorder increases while the Fe-As bond strength remains unchanged. Also, the Ru-As distance ($\sim$2.42 \AA), different from the Fe-As distance ($\sim$2.39 \AA), does not show any change in its force constant with the Ru substitution. These observations suggest that the SmFe$_{1-x}$Ru$_x$AsO$_{0.85}$F$_{0.15}$ system breaks down to coexisting local electronic phases on isoelectric substitution in the active FeAs layer.

Abstract: We explore the electronic, transport and thermoelectric properties of Fe1+ySexTe1−x compounds to clarify the mechanisms of superconductivity in Fe-based compounds. We carry out first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations of structural, electronic, magnetic and transport properties and measure resistivity, Hall resistance and Seebeck effect curves. All the transport properties exhibit signatures of the structural/magnetic transitions, such as discontinuities and sign changes of the Seebeck coefficient and of the Hall resistance. These features are reproduced by calculations provided that antiferromagnetic correlations are taken into account and experimental values of lattice constants are considered in DFT calculations. On the other hand, the temperature dependences of the transport properties can not be fully reproduced, and to improve the agreement between experiment and DFT calculations it is necessary to go beyond the constant relaxation time approximation and take into account correlation effects.

Abstract: Three years since the discovery by the Hosono’s group of Fe-based superconductors, an enormous number of compounds, belonging to several different families have been discovered and fundamental properties have been deeply investigated in order to clarify the interplay between magnetisms and superconductivity in these compounds. Indeed, the actual potential of these compounds for practical applications remains still unclear. Fe-based superconductors are midway between high temperature superconductors (HTSCs) and MgB 2 . In Fe-based superconductors the critical current is rather independent of the field, similarly to HTSCs, as a consequence of the exceptionally high upper critical field and strong pinning associated with nm-scale local modulations of the order parameter. They exhibit low anisotropy of the critical current with respect to the crystalline directions, as in the case of MgB 2 , which allows current flow along the c -axis. However, Fe-based superconductor polycrystalline materials currently available still exhibit electromagnetic granularity, like the HTSCs, which suppresses superconducting current flow over long length. Whether the nature of such granularity is extrinsic, as due to spurious phases or cracks between grains or intrinsic, as related to misalignment of adjacent grains, is under debate. These aspects will be reviewed in the light of the recent literature.

Abstract: The past four years of incredibly intense research into Fe-based superconductors have brought about many unexpected surprises. Our understanding of their behavior and physical properties is constantly evolving. Unlike any other superconductors, those containing iron span diverse groups of materials: pnictides, chalcogenides, intermetallics and oxides. Some major properties of the materials are quite similar, yet each group has its own distinct features. Significant effort has been put into identifying new superconducting compositions, modifying the existing ones with new dopants and treatments, and producing single crystals, thin films, wires and polycrystalline bulk material. A wide array of experimental techniques was applied to study Fe-based superconductors and the result is a tremendous amount of data collected over a period of less than four years. Theoretical debates are still lively, and there is an ongoing search for possible universalities and commonalities with other unconventional superconductors, like high-Tc cuprates or heavy fermion materials. The three-dimensional electronic structures of Fe-based superconductors, as well as their extreme sensitivity to disorder, present serious challenges for both theoretical analysis and the interpretation of experiments. However, some key properties emerge from multiple studies. Unconventional, multiband superconductivity originating from an electronic mechanism has found both experimental and theoretical support. There has been great progress in the understanding of various anisotropies of superconducting gap structures, including the possibility of gap nodes even if the gap symmetry is s-wave. Similar to high-Tc cuprates, the superconducting phase has a dome-like shape on T-doping or T-pressure phase diagrams. The anisotropy of the superconducting gap evolves with doping and is likely to become stronger at the dome's edge. In many Fe-based superconductors there is a range where superconductivity coexists and competes with long-range magnetic order, and magnetic fluctuations are considered by some to be of the utmost importance for the pairing mechanism. Others argue that orbital fluctuations, possibly in combination with phonons, are crucial for the pairing. Fe-based superconductors show extremely large upper critical fields and relatively low electronic anisotropy, which are crucial aspects for power applications. The expectations are high, though it remains unclear what maximal current densities can be supported by a properly designed bulk material with optimal pinning centers. This focus issue of Superconductor Science and Technology is a snapshot of some of the recent progress in materials preparation, experiments and theory. It includes articles on the search for new Fe-based superconductors and on the search for superconductivity at extreme conditions. Particular attention is devoted to: the effects of chemical substitutions; the development of thin films; the introduction of artificial defects to increase critical current density; and a general analysis of vortex physics. The articles on fundamental aspects of superconductivity include: the discussion of various experimental problems; an in-depth analysis of the nodal and nodeless pairing states; the discussion of the pairing mechanism; and the effects of pair-breaking due to disorder. Also discussed are nematic correlations and the coexistence of magnetism and superconductivity. The papers collected in this issue present a detailed review of the accomplishments of the last four years of research into Fe-based superconductors, up to and including last-minute developments. We hope that this combination will make this special section of Superconductor Science and Technology both interesting and useful to a broad spectrum of physicists and materials scientists.

35. MgB(2), a two-gap superconductor for practical applications

Abstract: The history of superconductivity in MgB2 has been short, but intense. Ten years after its discovery, the two-gap mechanism of superconductivity in MgB2 has been mastered to a considerable extent while developing its superconducting properties in wires that meet the technical and economic requirements of industrial applications. The hope for dry superconductivity (i.e., without any liquid cryogen) using this simple and low-cost material has been recently fulfilled, with current commercial availability of MgB2-based dry MRI machines. We expect that scientific progress in understanding and developing MgB2 conductors will continue, strengthening the base for further deployment of MgB2 in applications. This article presents the main scientific and technical highlights of MgB2, describing its two-gap superconductivity, progress in improving its superconducting properties, the advances toward making MgB2 a fully recognized practical superconductor, and its prospects for ongoing and upcoming applications.

Abstract: The evolution of the antiferromagnetic order parameter in CeFeAsO${}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}$F${}_{x}$ as a function of the fluorine content $x$ was investigated primarily via zero-field muon-spin spectroscopy. The long-range magnetic order observed in the undoped compound gradually turns into a short-range order at $x=0.04$, seemingly accompanied or induced by a drastic reduction of the magnetic moment of the iron ions. Superconductivity appears upon a further increase in doping ($xg0.04$) when, unlike in the cuprates, the Fe magnetic moments become even weaker. The resulting phase diagram evidences the presence of a crossover region, where the superconducting and the magnetic order parameters coexist on a nanoscopic range.

Abstract: We report measurements of resistivity, magnetoresistivity, Hall effect, Seebeck coefficient, infrared reflectivity of undoped SmFeAsO and lightly doped SmFeAs(O0.93F0.07) oxypnictides. All the properties measured on SmFeAsO are characterized by clear signatures of the magnetic instability. A self-consistent picture emerges in which below the magnetic transition carrier condensation occurs due to the opening of spin density wave (SDW) gap. This is accompanied by the mobility increase of not gapped carriers due to the suppression of electron-electron scattering. SmFeAs(O0.93F0.07) exhibits an increase of the metallic character on cooling consistent with electron doping, even though at room temperature values of all the properties nearly overlaps with those of SmFeAsO. However, with temperature decrease all anomalies related to the SDW instability are missed and the superconducting transition occurs. Abstract: The crystal structure of SmFeAsO has been investigated by means of Rietveld refinement of high resolution synchrotron powder diffraction data collected at 300 K and 100 K. The compound crystallizes in the tetragonal P4/nmm space group at 300 K and in the orthorhombic Cmma space group at 100 K; attempts to refine the low temperature data in the monoclinic P112/n space group diverged. Abstract: In this communication we present a transmission electron microscopy study on neutron-irradiated bulk samples. We give clear evidence that neutron irradiation creates nanometric amorphous regions within the crystal lattice. The density of these defects correctly scales with the neutron dose. These defects, whose size matches with the coherence length, act as pinning centers and are responsible for the strong increase of the critical current density at high field and for shifting the maxima of the pinning force curves toward higher fields.

Abstract: We measured the Raman and the Infrared phonon spectrum of SmFeAsO polycrystalline samples. We also performed Density Functional Theory calculations within the pseudopotential approximation to obtain the structural and dynamical lattice properties of both the SmFeAsO and the prototype LaFeAsO compounds. The measured Raman and Infrared phonon frequencies are well predicted by the optical phonon frequencies computed at the Gamma point, showing the capability of the employed ab-initio methods to describe the dynamical properties of these materials. A comparison among the phonon frequencies of different oxypnictides suggests a possible role of the high frequency phonons in the pairing mechanism leading to superconductivity in these materials., Comment: text file (.tex) and 2 figures (.eps)

Abstract: We summarize and compare the results obtained by point-contact spectroscopy (PCS) in high-quality single crystals and polycrystals of MgB2 with partial Al or C substitutions or irradiated with neutrons. We determined the values of the gaps Delta(sigma) and Delta(pi) by fitting the conductance curves of point contacts in the Andreev-reflection regime with the generalized BTK model. We always studied the temperature and magnetic-field dependencies of the conductance curves, so as to determine the critical temperature of the contact, T-c(A) and highlight whether one or two gaps were present. The dependence of the gaps on TcA shows a dominant effect of the band filling not only in Mg1-xAlxB2 and Mg(B1-xCx)(2) but also, unexpectedly, in irradiated MgB2. The increase in interband scattering is instead smaller than expected in Al-doped and irradiated MgB2 but is very large in C-doped single crystals, probably for extrinsic effects. Abstract: Neutron irradiation was performed on MgB2 thin films grown by hybrid physical chemical vapor deposition. Samples irradiated with different neutron fluences, having different critical temperatures, were studied by scanning tunneling spectroscopy in order to investigate the effect of the introduced disorder on the superconducting and spectroscopic properties. Abstract: We carried out Raman measurements on neutron-irradiated and Al-doped MgB2 samples. The Raman spectrum changes substantially in both cases and in a similar way, with the appearance of high-frequency spectral structures, whose spectral weight increases with increasing Al concentration and neutron irradiation fluence. In particular, in Al-doped samples the high-frequency peaks slightly harden with increasing Al concentration, due to the lattice compression, whereas in the neutron-irradiated samples, where no atomic substitution occurs, no frequency shift is detected. The appearance of high-frequency spectral structures in the irradiated samples, similar to those observed in Al-doped ones, is quite unexpected. By direct comparison of the Raman spectra with literature experimental phonon densities of states, we show that the modifications of the Raman spectrum in both irradiated and Al-doped samples are due to disorder-induced violations of the Raman selection rules. Theoretical calculations of the phonon density of states support this hypothesis, and demonstrate that the high-frequency structures arise mostly from contributions at q not equal 0 of the E-2g phonon mode.

Abstract: Recent experimental data of anisotropic magnetoresistivity measured in MgB2 films have shown an intriguing behaviour: the angular dependence of magnetoresistivity changes dramatically with temperature and disorder. In order to explain such phenomenology, in this work, we extend our previous analyses on multiband transverse magnetoresistivity in magnesium diboride, by calculating its analytic expression, assuming a constant anisotropic Fermi surface mass tensor. The calculation is done for arbitrary orientation of the magnetic field with respect to the crystalline axes and for the current density either perpendicular or parallel to the magnetic field. This approach allows to extract quite univocally the values of the scattering times in the s- and p- bands by fitting experimental data with a simple analytic expression. We also extend the analysis to the magnetoresistivity of polycrystalline samples, with an arbitrary angle between the current density and the magnetic field, taking into account the anisotropy of each randomly oriented grain. Thereby, we propose magnetoresistivity as a very powerful characterization tool to explore the effect of disorder by irradiation or selective doping as well as of phonon scattering in each one of the two types of bands, in single crystals and polycrystalline samples, which is a crucial issue in the study of magnesium diboride., Comment: 25 pages, 4 figures. in press on The European Physical Journal B

Abstract: We study the effect of neutron irradiation on the critical current density Jc of isotopically pure polycrystalline Mg11B2 samples. For fluences in the range 1017-1018 cm-2, Jc is enhanced and its dependence on magnetic field is significantly improved: we demonstrate that, in this regime, point-like pinning centers are effectively introduced in the system proportionally to the neutron fluence. Abstract: Al-alloyed MgB 2 was prepared by solid state reaction of Mg 1−x Alx alloy and crystalline B powder particles. The nominal composition of the samples was Mg 1−x Alx B2 ,w ith x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3. Microstructure and chemical composition have been investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), and preliminary transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The Al concentration of the matrix is close to, but less than, the nominal Al concentration and the difference increases with increasing nominal Al concentration. Al is incorporated into MgB 2 grains of ∼1 µ ms ize by substitution of Mg lattice sites with Al. Al was found to be distributed inhomogeneously, which partially explains the broadening of the superconducting transition width (� Tc) with increasing Al mole fraction. Al-alloyed samples contain large (∼15 µm) and small (∼2 µm) secondary phases embedded in the (Mg, Al)B 2 matrix. The composition of large secondary phases is found to be (Mg, Al)B 7+δ ,w ith the mole fraction of excess boron (δ) increasing from 0.99 at.% in the pure sample to 4.14 at.% in the highest alloyed sample. The Al to Mg mole fraction ratio in these large secondary phases is about half of that in the matrix. The size and density of the large secondary phases increased with increase in Al mole fraction. The secondary phases constitute less than 4% of the total sample volume and are thus not likely to affect the bulk superconductivity. Magnesium diffusion and evaporation governed the formation of secondary phases and can be explained by considering the effects of annealing temperature, annealing time, and boron powder particle size. The residual resistivity (ρ0) of pure MgB2 (x = 0) and Al-alloyed MgB 2 (x = 0.1, 0.2, 0.3) ,m easured by th ef our-probe technique is comparable to the single crystals, indicating the excellent quality of these samples. The lattice parameters c and a decrease at a rate of 1.15 pm and 0.17 pm/at.% Al ,r espectively. The superconducting transition temperature (Tc) determined by measuring the resistive superconducting transition decreases with increasing Al alloying at a rate of 1.56 K/at.% Al.

Abstract: We present thermal conductivity and specific heat measurements on MgB2 and Mg-AlB2 samples. Thermal properties have been analysed by using a two-gap model in order to estimate the gap amplitudes, D(0)p and D(0)s and the intra-band scattering rates, Gss and Gpp. As a function of Al doping and disorder D(0)s rapidly decreases, while D(0)p is rather constant. Abstract: We have studied the upper critical field, Bc2, in poly-crystalline MgB2 samples in which disorder was varied in a controlled way to carry selectively p and s bands from clean to dirty limit. We have found that the clean regime survives when p bands are dirty and s bands are midway between clean and dirty.
