The early diagnosis of acute ischemic stroke (AIS) can be challenging in cases presenting with a scarcity of clinical signs, normal cerebral imaging in early stages and a lack of specific serum markers. Thrombomodulin has been shown to be associated with cerebrovascular ischemic events and can be considered an important biomarker for the acute onset of ischemic stroke. In our study, we compared the serum levels of thrombomodulin (sTM) between a relevant patient group of 70 AIS patients and a control group of patients without AIS admitted into the neurology department between June 2022 and May 2023. sTM levels were measured at 24 h and 48 h after patients’ admissions into the hospital. There was a significant difference between the two groups (AIS: 23.2 ± 9.17 ng/mL vs. controls: 3.64 ± 1.72 ng/mL; p-value < 0.001). sTM values were correlated with the score of neurological deficits, with gender and dyslipidemia. The association of sTM values with the acute onset of AIS as an end point was significant, which allows rapid therapeutic interventions, even in the absence of a well-defined clinical syndrome (AUC = 0.99). Reanalysis of the patients after propensity score matching increased the power of sTM as a biomarker (AUC = 1). sTM represents a potentially useful biomarker to diagnose the onset of an AIS, even in scarce clinical presentations, which makes thrombomodulin a valuable indicator for early treatment initiation.

Stroke is a leading cause of death and severe disability worldwide. Rapid diagnosis is critical to ensure the timely administration of medical treatment. Given that in some cases CT scans fail to show the classic clinical signs of stroke, we aimed to evaluate the diagnostic capacity of adiponectin levels and their association with the clinical parameters of patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS). Adiponectin was measured within 24 h (T1) and 48 h (T2) of AIS onset in 70 patients. A total of 68 control cases were included in the study. Adiponectin levels were significantly higher in the AIS patients than in the controls (16.64 (3.79; 16.69) vs. 3.78 (3.79; 16.69); p < 0.001), with an accuracy of 0.98 (AUC = 0.99). Lower levels were seen in males and in AIS patients with obesity. Higher levels of adiponectin at T1 were associated with a moderate/severe NIHSS score at patient discharge. Moreover, higher levels of borderline significance were seen in patients who died within 12 months of their AIS episode (p = 0.054). Adiponectin may be a useful biomarker for the identification of AIS patients who do not present classic CT signs and could be used to stratify severe cases. Further studies are needed to validate these results.

Collagen peptides and marine collagen are enormous resources currently utilized. This review aims to examine the scientific literature to determine which collagen peptides derived from marine sources and which natural active antioxidants from marine collagen have significant biological effects as health-promoting nutraceuticals. Marine collagen is extracted from both vertebrate and invertebrate marine creatures. For vertebrates, this includes fish skin, bones, scales, fins, and cartilage. For invertebrates, it includes mollusks, echinoderms, crustaceans, and poriferans. The method used involved data analysis to organize information for isolating and identifying marine biocompounds with antioxidant properties. Specifically, amino acids with antioxidant properties were identified, enabling the use of hydrolysates and collagen peptides as natural antioxidant nutraceuticals. The methods of extraction of hydrolyzed collagen and collagen peptides by different treatments are systematized. The structural characteristics of collagen, collagen peptides, and amino acids in fish skin and by-products, as well as in invertebrate organisms (jellyfish, mollusks, and crustaceans), are described. The antioxidant properties of different methods of collagen hydrolysates and collagen peptides are systematized, and the results are comparatively analyzed. Their use as natural antioxidant nutraceuticals expands the range of possibilities for the exploitation of natural resources that have not been widely used until now.

Background and Objectives: Previous studies have shown that the levodopa treatment of Parkinson’s disease (PD) elevates circulating homocysteine levels, which are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular and neurological disorders, or thrombosis. The present trial aimed to examine whether the intake of vitamin B12, folic acid, and vitamin D3 supplements improved homocysteine level and quality of life (QoL). Materials and Methods: An interventional prospective trial was conducted in multiple centers across Romania. Participants with clinically established PD taking at least 300 mg/day of levodopa for more than 1 year received a daily tablet of a supplement containing 800 UI of vitamin D3, 1000 µg of folic acid, and 15 µg of vitamin B12. They were followed for 6 months and their serum homocysteine, vitamin B12, vitamin D, and QoL scores were measured at baseline and at 6 months of treatment. QoL was measured using a 15D questionnaire, which assesses mobility, vision, hearing, breathing, sleeping, eating, speech, excretion, usual activities, mental function, discomfort and symptoms, depression, distress, vitality, and sexual activity. Results: Twenty-four PD patients with a mean age of 71 ± 5.04 years (54.2% male and 45.8% female) finished the study. After the intervention, the mean score of speech, mental function, discomfort and symptoms, depression, and QoL significantly increased (p < 0.05 for all). Also, the serum homocysteine and vitamin D were significantly enhanced (p < 0.0001 and p = 0.025, respectively). Changes in vitamin B12 were not statistically significant at 6 months of treatment (p = 0.996). No gender differences were found among the changes that we have demonstrated for homocysteine, vitamin B12, vitamin D, and QoL levels (p < 0.05 for all). Conclusions: The findings of this study showed that the dietary intake of vitamin B12, folic acid, and vitamin D3 remarkably decreased the dimensions of homocysteine and finally increased the total score of QoL in PD patients. We have successfully captured the potential benefits of the supplementation regimen over time and provided insights into the broader implications for managing PD with a focus on nutritional support.

From a comparative perspective, this article analyzes which organizational factors favored the number of projects with European funds in Romania and Italy in sport. Italy ranks first in the EU in accessing Erasmus + grants on the sports component, followed by Spain, Croatia, Bulgaria, France, Greece, Slovenia, and Romania. While in Italy, more organizations are applying for funding, with an average of 0-5 projects per program period/organization, in Romania, fewer organizations apply for projects, but more projects/organization. An online questionnaire was addressed to a sample of 234 sports organizations from Italy and 49 sports organizations in Romania, followed by online interviews that were interpreted through the NVIVO platform. This research showed that in terms of performance, the organization’s number of employees impacts the revenues obtained and, implicitly, the financial result of the organization. Also, the number of Erasmus SPORT projects of the organizations in 2014-2020 as leaders or partners correlates with the organization's total income and financial result. On the other hand, there are no significant differences between the two countries on the factors that contributed the most to the success of organizations in Romania and Italy in obtaining funding through the Erasmus + program. Romanian and Italian organizations consider essential factors in attracting projects, the network of external partners with experience in writing and implementing projects, and internal human resource.

(1) Background: Madelung’s disease—known also as Benign Symmetric Adenolipomatosis (BSA) or Multiple Symmetric Lipomatosis (MSL), is a rare subcutaneous tissue disease characterized by the proliferation of non-encapsulated fat tissue with mature adipocytes. Patients develop symmetrical fatty deposits of varying sizes, (located particularly around the neck, shoulders, upper and middle back, arms, abdomen, and thighs), having clinical, esthetic, and psychiatric repercussions. (2) Methods: We report a case diagnosed with BSA upon admission to the Neurological and Internal Medicine Departments of the Emergency Clinical Hospital of Galati. (3) Results: This patient developed compressive phenomena and liposarcoma with liver metastasis, followed by death shortly after hospital presentation. The histopathology examination confirmed right latero-cervical liposarcoma and round cell hepatic metastasis. The specific metabolic ethiopathogenic mechanism has not been elucidated, but the adipocytes of BSA are different from normal cells in proliferation, hormonal regulation, and mitochondrial activity; a rare mitochondrial gene mutation, together with other interacting genetic or non-genetic factors, have been considered in recent studies. A thorough literature search identified only three cases reporting malignant tumors in BSA patients. (4) Conclusions: The goal of our paper is to present this rare case in the oncogenic synergism of two tumors. In the management of this BSA disorder, possible malignant transformation should be considered, although only scarce evidence was found supporting this.

This study aims to analyze the factors favoring the level of knowledge in writing European funds for sports structures. Factors such as gender, age, school, and the level of English are analyzed in correlation with the writing skills abilities: writing knowledge, needs assessment knowledge, purpose and objectives knowledge, Gantt chart knowledge, budget knowledge, finding partners knowledge, finding calls knowledge, dissemination Knowledge. A questionnaire survey was adopted, and the literature was reviewed before collecting data. One hundred nineteen representatives of public and private sports structures participated in this study. The study revealed that the level of English is the main factor favoring the level of knowledge in writing European funds for sports structures. The findings of this study provided valuable implications for curriculum developers and trainers in developing European funds training programs in the field of sport in Romania and beyond.

Animal stress is a current topic intensely addressed. The general adaptation syndrome, following short exposure to stressors with low or medium intensity, has a positive effect, inducing eustress and improving adaptive capacity. Exposure to strong stressors or over a long period of time has the effect of inducing distress. The aim was to evaluate the stressful effect they have on horses, the specific activities of equine-assisted therapy, in the case of children with autism spectrum disorders. Were used 10 riding horses (8 females and 2 males), of purebred English breed, divided into 2 groups, aged between 4-8 years. The animals had the same maintenance conditions and lifestyle. Samples were taken from the jugular vein in 5 ml heparinized tubes. The parameters were determined using a ProCyte Dx Hematology Analyzer. The data obtained were statistically analyzed, calculating the Mean and Standard Deviation (Microsoft Excel). The results show that the specific activities of equine-assisted therapy do not have a stressful effect on the pathways used. These activities were less stressful than regular recreational riding activities in a riding school, subjecting the animal to less intense physical exertion than daily activities.

Stem cell transplant proved its efficacy in increasing the survival rate among young patients diagnosed with hematological malignancies. A transplant conditioning regimen is particularly destructive on the genital system, often determining premature ovarian failure, accompanied by vulvovaginal atrophy and sexual dysfunctions. The aims of the present study were, first, to evaluate sexual dysfunctions among transplanted women, using clinical examination and the female sexual function index (FSFI), and second, to determine their impact on a couple’s relationship. A prospective observational comparative study was performed and included 38 patients who underwent allogenic stem cell transplant (SCT) procedures for different hematological malignancies and 38 healthy patients (control group). This study included baseline evaluation, one-year, and three-year follow-up visits. In addition to anamnesis and medically obtained information, FSFI was evaluated to determine the impact of gynecological damage in a subjective manner. In the study group, vulvovaginal atrophy was diagnosed in 76.32%, with subsequent sexual dysfunctions in 92.10% of patients, based on FSFI scoring. Even though the results improved throughout the study, at the last visit, mild vulvovaginal atrophy was diagnosed in 81.58% of patients, and the FSFI score was abnormal for 21.05%. When compared to the control group, both sexual dysfunctions and FSFI results were considerably impaired, with statistical significance. There is a confirmed negative impact of sexual dysfunctions and self-declared FSFI on couple/marital status and couple relationships, with statistical significance, at the last visit. In conclusion, anatomical, functional, and psychological difficulties are a reality of long-term survivors after a stem cell transplant. They should be addressed and assessed equally to other medical conditions, as they may determine serious consequences and impact the sexual quality of life and the couple’s relationship.

Ganoderma lucidum (G. lucidum) has been known for many centuries in Asian countries under different names, varying depending on the country. The objective of this review is to investigate the scientific research on the natural active bio-compounds in extracts obtained from G. lucidum with significant biological actions in the treatment of cancer. This review presents the classes of bio-compounds existing in G. lucidum that have been reported over time in the main databases and have shown important biological actions in the treatment of cancer. The results highlight the fact that G. lucidum possesses important bioactive compounds such as polysaccharides, triterpenoids, sterols, proteins, nucleotides, fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals, which have been demonstrated to exhibit multiple anticancer effects, namely immunomodulatory, anti-proliferative, cytotoxic, and antioxidant action. The potential health benefits of G. lucidum are systematized based on biological actions. The findings present evidence regarding the lack of certainty about the effects of G. lucidum bio-compounds in treating different forms of cancer, which may be due to the use of different types of Ganoderma formulations, differences in the study populations, or due to drug–disease interactions. In the future, larger clinical trials are needed to clarify the potential benefits of pharmaceutical preparations of G. lucidum, standardized by the known active components in the prevention and treatment of cancer.

The present article aims to point out the necessity to raise intercultural awareness and to build intercultural communication competence in Professional Foreign Language Classes. After defining the main concepts involved and having as a starting point G. Hofstede’s cultural dimension’s theory, the article brings forward several proposals of activities and makes reference to certain available and useful resources and methods that could serve the announced objective.

Serotonin is well known to be involved in the mediation of cognitive processes, but also in the regulation of multiple distinct physiological processes, such as pain. It is also involved in the modulation of nociception of the endogenous analgesic system. Among the monoamine neurotransmitters, serotonin plays an important role in signaling chronic pain, hence the importance of its monitoring in lumbar pain due to degenerative pathology, one of the common cause of this kind of pain. The aim of our study is to evaluate the impact of peloidotherapy on the variation of serum serotonin levels in patients with degenerative low back pain. In our study, conducted in Balneal and Rehabilitation Sanatorium of Techirghiol, we evaluated 130 patients who performed balneal and physical treatments for a period of 2 weeks. The patients were divided into 3 groups: 51 patients were enrolled into the hot mud baths group (HMB), 48 in the cold mud baths (CMB) group and 31 in the control group (CG). Each patient performed physiotherapy treatments which includes electrotherapy, massage and kinetotherapy, patients from HMB group had also hot mud therapy and patients from CMB group had cold mud therapy. Serum serotonin was dosed at admission and at discharge, for each patient, and was determined using ELISA method with kits from Demeditec Diagnostics GmbH for human serotonin. Colorectal deep infiltrative endometriosis (DIE) can have a major impact on patient’s health and quality of life. Surgical treatment of colorectal DIE varies depending on the location and characteristics of the lesions, which is why the preoperative non-invasive diagnosis needs to be correct and complete. Multiple imaging methods are currently available, but their usefulness is still being studied, as none of them has proven itself perfect. In the present study we wanted to find out to what extent the combined use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), endorectal ultrasound (ERUS) and computed tomography-based virtual colonoscopy (CTC) helps perform the preoperative mapping of lesions. We conducted a retrospective study of prospectively collected data that included 49 patients operated for colorectal DIE. In identifying rectal nodules, MRI as a single diagnostic method was the most useful. When ERUS or CTC was added, the concordance between intraoperative and imaging results was very strong. CTC was the most useful in identifying sigmoid nodules. ERUS evaluates the depth of rectal nodules best. CTC assesses best the stenosis for both rectal and sigmoid nodules. Each method contributed to the completion of the diagnosis, so performing ERUS and CTC in addition to MRI seems to be preferable in patients with colorectal DIE.

The present article starts from the already well-known relationship between translation studies and pragmatics and aims to offer an analysis of the way in which several instances of irony in John Galsworthy’s novels are translated into Romanian. The paper approaches the phenomenon of irony comprising pragmatic theories such as: irony as substitute of literal meaning, as echoic mention, as pretence or simulation of illocutionary force of speech acts.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a disorder with an unknown etiology that features a wide range of endocrine and metabolic abnormalities that hamper fertility. PCOS women experience difficulties getting pregnant, and if pregnant, they are prone to miscarriage, gestational diabetes, pregnancy-induced hypertension and preeclampsia, high fetal morbidity, and perinatal mortality. Insulin, the pancreatic hormone best known for its important role in glucose metabolism, has an underrated position in reproduction. PCOS women who have associated insulin resistance (with consequent hyperinsulinemia) have fertility issues and adverse pregnancy outcomes. Lowering the endogen insulin levels and insulin resistance appears to be a target to improve fertility and pregnancy outcomes in those women. Berberine is an alkaloid with a high concentration in various medicinal herbs that exhibits a hypoglycaemic effect alongside a broad range of other therapeutic activities. Its medical benefits may stand up for treating different conditions, including diabetes mellitus. So far, a small number of pharmacological/clinical trials available in the English language draw attention towards the good results of berberine’s use in PCOS women with insulin resistance for improving fertility and pregnancy outcomes. Our study aims to uncover how berberine can counteract the negative effect of insulin resistance in PCOS women and improve fertility and pregnancy outcomes.

Pruritic urticarial papules and plaques of pregnancy (PUPPP) usually occurs in the third trimester of pregnancy in primiparous women. It is a self-limiting inflammatory disorder with a still unknown pathogenic mechanism. The abdominal wall overdistension, with a subsequent inflammatory response due to damage to the connective tissue, represents a pathogenesis explanation. Clinical features involve intensely pruritic urticarial rash with edematous, erythematous papules and plaques. The clinical picture and dermal biopsy establish the diagnosis. Topical corticosteroids and oral antihistamines are usually sufficient, but sometimes systemic corticosteroids are necessary. Maternal and fetal prognosis is excellent, and the lesions resolve after birth with no scarring or pigmentary change. We present a case of a 36-year-old patient with a 32-week pregnancy who was admitted with a generalized pruritic rash accompanied by fever. The final diagnosis was decided after multiple pathology exclusions. Treatment consisted of systemic corticoid therapy. The patient gave birth by cesarean section to a healthy newborn without dermatological lesions or other conditions. Adding more PUPPP cases to the literature portfolio will bring more awareness to this under-recognized and under-reported skin disorder. We trust this case will encourage other physicians to publish more cases of pregnancy-specific dermatoses.

We describe a 22-year-old woman (2-gravid) case who was referred to our clinic at 18 weeks of gestation for a placenta with vesicular lesions discovered on prenatal examination routine. An ultrasound exam at 31 weeks of gestation showed numerous vesicular lesions, which gradually augmented as the pregnancy advanced. A live normal-appearing fetus was confirmed by intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). The maternal serum β-human chorionic gonadotropin level remained in normal ranges. At some point, a multidisciplinary medical consensus considered the termination of the pregnancy, but the patient refused to comply. At 33 weeks of gestation, preterm premature rupture of membranes (pPROM) occurred, and she spontaneously delivered a 1600 g healthy female baby with a good long-term outcome. Placental mesenchymal dysplasia (PMD) was retrospectively diagnosed after confronting the data from ultrasound, chorionic villus sampling (CVS), amniocentesis, pathological examination, and immunohistochemical stain. The lack of sufficient reports of PMD determines doctors to be cautious and reserved, approaching these cases more radically than necessary. We reviewed this disease and searched for all cases of PMD associated with healthy, live newborns.

The deleterious effects of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic urged the development of diagnostic tools to manage the spread of disease. Currently, the “gold standard” involves the use of quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) for SARS-CoV-2 detection. Even though it is sensitive, specific and applicable for large batches of samples, qRT-PCR is labour-intensive, time-consuming, requires trained personnel and is not available in remote settings. This review summarizes and compares the available strategies for COVID-19: serological testing, Point-of-Care Testing, nanotechnology-based approaches and biosensors. Last but not least, we address the advantages and limitations of these methods as well as perspectives in COVID-19 diagnostics. The effort is constantly focused on understanding the quickly changing landscape of available diagnostic testing of COVID-19 at the clinical levels and introducing reliable and rapid screening point of care testing. The last approach is key to aid the clinical decision-making process for infection control, enhancing an appropriate treatment strategy and prompt isolation of asymptomatic/mild cases. As a viable alternative, Point-of-Care Testing (POCT) is typically low-cost and user-friendly, hence harbouring tremendous potential for rapid COVID-19 diagnosis.

International Sports has not been spared the effects of globalization, and among these is the migration of athletes from one country to another. Lately nationality of athletes has become a major issue for professional sports and the principles on which it is based. The problem arose from the lack of a clear and consistent rules on sporting nationality for athletes representing a country in international competition. For a long time, the mere possession of nationality was sufficient to check this link to a particular state. This thesis, outlines how the rules for each sport varies quite considerably, from sports that allow a high degree of flexibility and movement for Olympics to sports that have somewhat restrictive regulations such as football or very restrictive like tennis. It also emphasizes the advantages and disadvantages of quick naturalization and provides some ideas for how this issue can be handled.

The aim of this article is to show the importance of Big Data and its growing influence on companies. We can also see how much are the companies willing to invest in big data and how much are they currently gaining from their big data. In this big data era, there is a fiercely competition between the companies and the technologies they use when building their strategies. There are almost no boundaries when it comes to the possibilities and facilities some databases can offer. However, the most challenging part lays in the development of efficient solutions - where and when to take the right decision, which cloud service is the most accurate being given a certain scenario, what database is suitable for the business taking in consideration the data types. These are just a few aspects which will be dealt with in the following chapters as well as exemplifications of the most accurate cloud services (e.g. NoSQL databases) used by business leaders nowadays.

Currently, despite the thoroughgoing scientific research carried out in the area of wound healing management, the treatment of skin injuries, regardless of etiology remains a big provocation for health care professionals. An optimal wound dressing should be nontoxic, non-adherent, non-allergenic, should also maintain a humid medium at the wound interfacing, and be easily removed without trauma. For the development of functional and bioactive dressings, they must meet different conditions such as: The ability to remove excess exudates, to allow gaseous interchange, to behave as a barrier to microbes and to external physical or chemical aggressions, and at the same time to have the capacity of promoting the process of healing by stimulating other intricate processes such as differentiation, cell adhesion, and proliferation. Over the past several years, various types of wound dressings including hydrogels, hydrocolloids, films, foams, sponges, and micro/nanofibers have been formulated, and among them, the electrospun nanofibrous mats received an increased interest from researchers due to the numerous advantages and their intrinsic properties. The drug-embedded nanofibers are the potential candidates for wound dressing application by virtue of: Superior surface area-to volume ratio, enormous porosity (can allow oxy-permeability) or reticular nano-porosity (can inhibit the microorganisms’adhesion), structural similitude to the skin extracellular matrix, and progressive electrospinning methodology, which promotes a prolonged drug release. The reason that we chose to review the formulation of electrospun nanofibers based on polysaccharides as dressings useful in wound healing was based on the ever-growing research in this field, research that highlighted many advantages of the nanofibrillary network, but also a marked versatility in terms of numerous active substances that can be incorporated for rapid and infection-free tissue regeneration. In this review, we have extensively discussed the recent advancements performed on electrospun nanofibers (eNFs) formulation methodology as wound dressings, and we focused as well on the entrapment of different active biomolecules that have been incorporated on polysaccharides-based nanofibers, highlighting those bioagents capable of improving the healing process. In addition, in vivo tests performed to support their increased efficacy were also listed, and the advantages of the polysaccharide nanofiber-based wound dressings compared to the traditional ones were emphasized.

Primary cutaneous amyloidosis (PCA) is a form of localized amyloidosis. It is characterized by the deposition of a fibrillar material in the superficial dermis, without affecting other systems or organs. The diagnosis can be made clinically, but usually a skin biopsy is performed in order to exclude other skin diseases with similar appearance. Reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) is a novel imaging tool that enables in vivo characterization of various skin changes with a high, quasi-microscopic resolution. This technique might have an important role in the differential diagnosis of cutaneous amyloidosis, by the in vivo assessment of epidermal changes and dermal amyloid deposition. Moreover, it is completely non-invasive and can be safely repeated on the same skin area. However, to date, there is only one published paper presenting the confocal features of primary cutaneous amyloidosis. Hereby, we describe the in vivo RCM features of PCA lesions from a patient with diabetes and correlate them with histologic findings. This strengthens the clinical usefulness of in vivo RCM examination for the non-invasive diagnosis of cutaneous amyloidosis, especially in patients that might associate diseases with impaired wound healing.

Tissues and biomaterials used for corneal surface repair require fulfilling specific optical standards prior to implantation in the patient. However, there is not a feasible evaluation method to be applied in clinical or Good Manufacturing Practice settings. In this study, we describe and assess an innovative easy-applied photographic-based method (PBM) for measuring functional optical blurring and transparency in corneal surface grafts.Plastic compressed collagen scaffolds (PCCS) and multilayered amniotic membranes (AM) samples were optically and histologically evaluated. Transparency and image blurring measures were obtained by PBM, analyzing photographic images of a standardized band pattern taken through the samples. These measures were compared and correlated to those obtained applying the Inverse Adding-Doubling (IAD) technique, which is the gold standard method.All the samples used for optical evaluation by PBM or IAD were histological suitable. PCCS samples presented transmittance values higher than 60%, values that increased with increasing wavelength as determined by IAD. Advances in the development of cornea substitutes by tissue engineering techniques have focused on the use of decellularized tissue scaffolds. In this work, we evaluated different chemical and physical decellularization methods on small intestine tissues to determine the most appropriate decellularization protocols for corneal applications. Our results revealed that the most efficient decellularization agents were the SDS and triton X-100 detergents, which were able to efficiently remove most cell nuclei and residual DNA. Histological and histochemical analyses revealed that collagen fibers were preserved upon decellularization with triton X-100, NaCl and sonication, whereas reticular fibers were properly preserved by decellularization with UV exposure. Extracellular matrix glycoproteins were preserved after decellularization with SDS, triton X-100 and sonication, whereas proteoglycans were not affected by any of the decellularization protocols. Tissue transparency was significantly higher than control non-decellularized tissues for all protocols, although the best light transmittance results were found in tissues decellularized with SDS and triton X-100. In conclusion, our results suggest that decellularized intestinal grafts could be used as biological scaffolds for cornea tissue engineering. Decellularization with triton X-100 was able to efficiently remove all cells from the tissues while preserving tissue structure and most fibrillar and non-fibrillar extracellular matrix components, suggesting that this specific decellularization agent could be safely used for efficient decellularization of SI tissues for cornea TE applications.

Augmented Reality (AR) enhances a user's perception of the real world by enhancing it with specific objects that are over-imposed to the real objects. The virtual objects display information that the user may use. The information conveyed by the virtual objects helps a user perform real-world tasks. An augmented reality application is the assembly, maintenance, and repair of complex machinery or common goods. Instructions might be easier to understand if they were available, not as manuals with text and pictures, but rather as 3-D drawings superimposed upon the actual equipment, showing step-by-step the tasks that need to be done and how to do them. These superimposed 3-D drawings can be animated, making the directions even more explicit. This paper describes a proof-of-concept AR application to be used for office printer service operation.

The pro-apoptotic proteins Bax and Bak are essential for executing programmed cell death (apoptosis), yet the mechanism of their activation is not properly understood at the structural level. For the first time in cell death research, we calculated intra-protein charge transfer in order to study the structural alterations and their functional consequences during Bax activation. Using an electronegativity equalization model, we investigated the changes in the Bax charge profile upon activation by a functional peptide of its natural activator protein, Bim. We found that charge reorganizations upon activator binding mediate the exposure of the functional sites of Bax, rendering Bax active. The affinity of the Bax C-domain for its binding groove is decreased due to the Arg94-mediated abrogation of the Ser184-Asp98 interaction. We further identified a network of charge reorganizations that confirms previous speculations of allosteric sensing, whereby the activation information is conveyed from the activation site, through the hydrophobic core of Bax, to the well-distanced functional sites of Bax. The network was mediated by a hub of three residues on helix 5 of the hydrophobic core of Bax. Sequence and structural alignment revealed that this hub was conserved in the Bak amino acid sequence, and in the 3D structure of folded Bak. Our results suggest that allostery mediated by charge transfer is responsible for the activation of both Bax and Bak, and that this might be a prototypical mechanism for a fast activation of proteins during signal transduction. Our method can be applied to any protein or protein complex in order to map the progress of allosteric changes through the proteins' structure.

Introduction. Pregnancy is a well-known risk factor for asymptomatic hemangiomas discovered incidentally, becoming aggressive or symptomatic, most often in the third trimester of pregnancy, related to hemodynamic and endocrine changes that occur during pregnancy. Many patients experience incomplete spontaneous remission after birth. Material and method. We report the case of a 24-year-old woman, who presented for incomplete paraplegia, pain in the spine, instability of walking of the left lower limb, bilateral plantar paresthesia, possible walking with metal support. Results and discussions. The MRI performed identifies T9 vertebral fracture-compression on pathological bone, T10-T12 vertebral hemangiomas. Conclusions. In order to obtain favorable results, the patient benefited from the support and treatment of a multidisciplinary team: neurosurgeons, imagers, physical and rehabilitation medicine doctors and physiotherapists, and represented a real challenge regarding the complexity of the factors involved. Introduction Transthyretin -Related Familial Amyloid Polyneuropathy (TTR-FAP) is a rare cause of polyneuropathy, mainly in Romania, but also in other geographic area of Europe, Japan and north America. Polyneuropathies are common in neurology practice, but prevalence and incidence are not known, usually are underreported and misdiagnosis. Almost one third of polyneuropathies remain idiopathic, in spite of extensive work-out to identify etiology. Transthyretin-related familial amyloid polyneuropathy (TTR-FAP) is a multisystemic disease neurological manifestation caused by the accumulation of amyloidogenic transthyretin (TTR) protein in tissues. It is an autosomal dominant syndrome, and there are more than 100 forms of TTr associated with FAP. The disease is characterized by progressive peripheral and autonomic neuropathy, and visceral amyloid involvement like cardiac amyloidosis. Case presentation We present the case of a male, aged 48, who experienced from 18 month paresthesias of distal inferior limb and fatigue, with an important weight loss. The patient was diagnosed with mixed polyneuropathy, and he was extensively investigated. Etiology was not established. He began to feel dizziness and faints several times, and these new features lead to our final diagnosis. Conclusions Etiology of a polyneuropathy case could be very challenging for general neurologist due to a numerous causes. A large variety of signs and symptoms lead the clinician to a narrow diagnostic possibilities and still this might take a long time. Introduction. Infectious and autoimmune rheumatic diseases (ARDs) are closely linked. Apart from the challenging, sometimes differential, diagnosis between these conditions, it is recognized that microbes play an important role in the pathogenesis of the latter. Material and method. We present the case of a 45-year-old female patient from our rehabilitation department, with complex pathology (infectious, neurological, rheumatological and orthopedic pathology) that began more than 15 years ago. The patient's pathological history began insidiously at theage of 30 when she was diagnosed with neurotoxoplasmosis. She received anticoagulant, antiepileptic, steroidal, antibiotic and antihelmintic treatment. After four years, the patient shows insidious onset of inflammatory pain in the large joints and in 2010 is diagnosed with seropositive rheumatoid arthritis, according to American College of Rheumatism/European League against rheumatism (ACR/EULAR) criteria with symmetric impairment of the large joints (shoulder, elbow, hip, knee, ankle). Despite the treatment with disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) received, in the following years she needed 4 arthroplasties in the large joints due to osteonecrosis. Conclusions. On clinical grounds, infections, especially chronic infections, can cause a plethora of autoimmune phenomena, thus mimicking ARDs. Therefore, the differential diagnosis between ARDs and infectious diseases is sometimes challenging as they often display similar clinical manifestations. It is highlighted that the immune system can be our friend or our foe considering that its function and dysregulation are the common denominators in autoimmune and infectious diseases. Introduction. Hypertrophic osteoarthropathy (HOA) is a syndrome characterized by periostitis of the long (tubular) bones, clubbing of the digits and arthritis. Less than 4,5% of the lung cancer patients developed hypertrophic osteoarthropathy as a paraneoplastic manifestation. Case presentation. We present a case of a 59 year old man, smoker presents for 18 months recurrent symmetric arthritis of knee. He lost 6 kilograms and he had no pulmonary symptoms. Physical examination revealed digital clubbing with watch-glass nails painless of all fingers, joint effusion of the knees. Laboratory results revealed only inflammatory syndrome and anaemia of chronic disease. The X-rays revealed periosteal appositions at the tibia, fibula and femur, mass in the left lower lobe. Computed tomography confirmed lung tumor and biopsy showed the malignant character of the tumor. Conclusion. The index of suspicion for OAH should be high in a patient with symmetrical arthritis who associates Hippocratic fingers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
