The dynamics of many multiphase fluid systems involve the thinning and eventual break up of a slender fluid filament or a liquid jet. The interfacial instability that controls the rate of jet thinning depends on the relative magnitudes of capillary, viscous, and inertial stresses. Surfactants add an additional layer of physicochemical dynamics by reducing the surface tension of the interface and introducing reverse Marangoni flows in response to surface concentration gradients. Surfactants may also introduce an intrinsic surface rheology that affects jet thinning. Quantifying these effects has been a significant problem in chemical physics and a topic of key research interest. Recent studies have shown that insoluble surfactants delay thread thinning and suppress instabilities in Newtonian jets. However, the role of surfactant solubility in liquid jet stability is still unknown. In this work, we use linear stability analysis to quantitatively show the stabilizing effects of Marangoni stresses, surfactant adsorption and desorption time, and intermolecular forces upon adsorption. We highlight the seemingly indistinguishable way in which various surfactant properties result in the same outcome. We also identify a surface dissipative contribution that arises from the interplay of Marangoni flows with finite adsorption and desorption, which acts as an "apparent" surface viscosity. We verify predictions of our linear stability results against numerical simulations and conclude by noting that tuning surface activity and kinetics of adsorbed surfactants or particles can potentially suppress droplet formation, which is of significant impact in the printing industry and in the control of the spread of aerosols. Bacterial biofilm formation and attachment to hosts are mediated by carbohydrate-binding lectins, exopolysaccharides, and their interactions in the extracellular matrix (ECM). During tomato infection Ralstonia pseudosolanacearum (Rps) GMI1000 highly expresses three lectins: LecM, LecF, and LecX. The latter two are uncharacterized. We evaluated the roles in bacterial wilt disease of LecF, a fucose-binding lectin, LecX, a xylose-binding lectin, and the Rps exopolysaccharide EPS I. Interestingly, single and double lectin mutants attached to tomato roots better and formed more biofilm under static conditions in vitro. Consistent with this finding, static bacterial aggregation was suppressed by heterologous expression of lecFGMI1000 and lecXGMI1000 in other Ralstonia strains that naturally lack these lectins. Crude ECM from a ΔlecF/X double mutant was more adhesive than the wild-type ECM, and LecF and LecX increased Rps attachment to ECM. The enhanced adhesiveness of the ΔlecF/X ECM could explain the double mutant's hyper-attachment in static conditions. Unexpectedly, mutating lectins decreased Rps attachment and biofilm viscosity under shear stress, which this pathogen experiences in plant xylem. LecF, LecX, and EPS I were all essential for biofilm development in xylem fluid flowing through cellulose-coated microfluidic channels. These results suggest that under shear stress, LecF and LecX increase Rps attachment by interacting with the ECM and plant cell wall components like cellulose. In static conditions such as on root surfaces and in clogged xylem vessels, the same lectins suppress attachment to facilitate pathogen dispersal. Thus, Rps lectins have a dual biological function that depends on the physical environment. Author summary: Bacterial wilt diseases caused by Ralstonia species inflict significant losses on diverse, globally important agricultural plants. The pathogen first colonizes roots and ultimately the water-transporting xylem. There it attaches to host cell walls and other bacterial cells to form biofilms that eventually block xylem vessels and disrupt sap flow. It is not well known how Ralstonia spp. modulate attachment, but precise control of both attachment and dispersal is critical for successful host colonization over the disease cycle. Excessive adhesion could trap bacteria in a toxic or nutrient-depleted environment. Conversely, insufficient adhesion in a flowing environment could displace bacteria from an optimal niche. We provide evidence of dual, environment-specific roles of carbohydrate-binding lectins and exopolysaccharide EPS I in Ralstonia pseudosolanacearum (Rps) attachment. In static conditions, which Rps experiences on a host root, two lectins suppress bacterial aggregation and adhesion to roots. However, in flowing conditions, which Rps experiences in healthy xylem vessels, the same two lectins and EPS I are essential for biofilm development. The lectins increase the biofilm viscosity and support colony structural integrity, likely by interacting with polysaccharides in the biofilm matrix. We develop a mean-field model to examine the stability of a 'quasi-2-D suspension' of elongated particles embedded within a viscous membrane. This geometry represents several biological and synthetic settings, and we reveal mechanisms by which the anisotropic mobility of particles interacts with long-ranged viscous membrane hydrodynamics. We first show that a system of slender rod-like particles driven by a constant force is unstable to perturbations in concentration - much like sedimentation in analogous 3-D suspensions - so long as membrane viscous stresses dominate. However, increasing the contribution of viscous stresses from the surrounding 3-D fluid(s) suppresses such an instability. We then tie this result to the hydrodynamic disturbances generated by each particle in the plane of the membrane and show that enhancing subphase viscous contributions generates extensional fields that orient neighbouring particles in a manner that draws them apart. Biological membranes are self-assembled complex fluid interfaces that host proteins, molecular motors, and other macromolecules essential for cellular function. These membranes have a distinct in-plane fluid response with a surface viscosity that has been well characterized. The resulting quasi-two-dimensional fluid dynamical problem describes the motion of embedded proteins or particles. However, the viscous response of biological membranes is often non-Newtonian: in particular, the surface shear viscosity of phospholipids that comprise the membrane depends strongly on the surface pressure. We use the Lorentz reciprocal theorem to extract the effective long-ranged hydrodynamic interaction among membrane inclusions that arises due to such non-trivial rheology. We show that the corrective force that emerges ties back to the interplay between membrane flow and non-constant viscosity, which suggests a mechanism for biologically favorable protein aggregation within membranes. We quantify and describe the mechanism for such a large-scale concentration instability using a mean-field model. Finally, we employ numerical simulations to demonstrate the formation of hexatic crystals due to the effective hydrodynamic interactions within the membrane. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Surfactants – molecules and particles that preferentially adsorb to fluid interfaces – play a ubiquitous role in the fluids of industry, of nature and of life. Since most surfactants cannot be seen directly, their behaviour must be inferred from their impact on observed flows, like the buoyant rise of a bubble, or the thickness of a coating film. In so doing, however, a difficulty arises: physically distinct surfactant processes can affect measurable flows in qualitatively identical ways, raising the spectre of confusion or even misinterpretation. This Perspective describes, in one coherent piece, both the equilibrium properties and dynamic processes of surfactants, to better enable the fluid mechanics community to understand, interpret and design surfactant/fluid systems. Specifically, we treat the equilibrium thermodynamics of surfactants at interfaces, including surface pressure, isotherms of soluble and insoluble surfactants and surface dilatational moduli (Gibbs and Marangoni). We describe surfactant dynamics in fluid systems, including surfactant transport and interfacial stress boundary conditions, the competition between surface diffusion, advection and adsorption/desorption, Marangoni stresses and flows and surface-excess rheology. We discuss paradigmatic problems from fluid mechanics that are impacted by surfactants, including translating drops and bubbles, surfactant adsorption to clean and oscillating interfaces; capillary wave damping, thin-film dynamics, foam drainage and the dynamics of particles and probes at surfactant-laden interfaces. Finally, we discuss the additional richness and complexity that frequently arise in 'real' surfactants, including phase transitions, phase coexistence and polycrystalline phases within surfactant monolayers, and their impact on non-Newtonian surface rheology. Three-dimensional numerical simulations are performed to study the stability of a sedimenting suspension of weakly flexible fibers. It is well known that a suspension of rigid rods sedimenting under gravity at low Reynolds number is unstable to concentration fluctuations owing to hydrodynamic interactions. Flexible fibers, however, reorient while settling and even weak flexibility can alter their collective dynamics. In our recentwork [Manikantan et al., "The instability of a sedimenting suspension of weakly flexible fibres," J. Fluid Mech. 756, 935-964 (2014)], we developed a mean-field theory to predict the linear stability of such a system. Here, we verify these predictions using accurate and efficient particle simulations based on a slender-body model. We also demonstrate the mechanisms by which flexibility-induced reorientation alters suspension microstructure, and through it, its stability. Specifically, we first show that the anisotropy of the base state in the case of a suspension of flexible fibers has a destabilizing effect compared to a suspension of rigid rods. Second, a conflicting effect of flexibility is also shown to suppress particle clustering and slow down the growth of the instability. The relative magnitude of filament flexibility and rotational Brownian motion dictates which effect dominates, and our simulations qualitatively follow theoretically predicted trends. The mechanism for either effects is tied to the flexibilityinduced reorientation of particles, which we illustrate using velocity and orientation statistics from our simulations. An analytical expression for the fluctuation-rounded stretch-coil transition of semiflexible polymers in extensional flows is derived. The competition between elasticity and tension is known to cause a buckling instability in filaments placed near hyperbolic stagnation points and the effect of thermal fluctuations on this transition has yet to receive full quantitative treatment. Motivated by the findings of recent experiments as well as our simulations, we solve for the amplitude of the first buckled mode near the onset of the instability. We study hydrodynamic interactions and clustering mechanisms of active membrane inclusions within lipid bilayers. Pairs of inclusions display unique oscillatory dynamics that disappear when the 3D fluid adjacent to the membrane is confined. We reduce the governing equations to a coupled dynamical system whose phase behavior reveals the striking role of bulk confinement in enhancing cluster formation within the membrane. Using numerical simulations, we then extend this finding to demonstrate the role of confinement in controlling large-scale aggregation of membrane inclusions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The dynamics and transport properties of Brownian semiflexible filaments suspended in a two-dimensional array of counter-rotating Taylor-Green vortices are investigated using numerical simulations based on slender-body theory for low-Reynolds-number hydrodynamics. Such a flow setup has been previously proposed to capture some of the dynamics of biological polymers in motility assays. A buckling instability permits elastic filaments to migrate across such a cellular lattice in a 'Brownian-like' manner even in the athermal limit. However, thermal fluctuations alter these dynamics qualitatively by driving polymers across streamlines, leading to their frequent trapping within vortical cells. As a result, thermal fluctuations, characterized here by the persistence length, are shown to lead to subdiffusive transport at long times, and this qualitative shift in behavior is substantiated by the slow decay of waiting-time distributions as a consequence of trapping events during which the filaments remain in a particular cell for extended periods of time. Velocity and mass distributions of polymers reveal statistically preferred positions within a unit cell that further corroborate this systematic shift from transport to trapping with increasing fluctuations. Comparisons to results from a continuum model for the complementary case of rigid Brownian rods in such a flow also highlight the role of elastic flexibility in dictating the nature of polymer transport. Large gas bubbles can reach the surface of pools of mud and lava where they burst, often through the formation and expansion of circular holes. Bursting bubbles release volatiles and generate spatter, and hence play a key role in volcanic degassing and volcanic edifice construction. Here, we study the ascent and rupture of bubbles using a combination of field observations at Pâclele Mici (Romania), laboratory experiments with mud from the Imperial Valley (California, USA), numerical simulations and theoretical models. Numerical simulations predict that bubbles ascend through the mud as elliptical caps that develop a dimple at the apex as they impinge on the free surface. We documented the rupture of bubbles in nature and under laboratory conditions using high-speed video. The bursting of mud bubbles starts with the nucleation of multiple holes, which form at a near-constant rate and in quick succession. The quasi-circular holes rapidly grow and coalesce, and the sheet evolves towards a filamentous structure that finally falls back into the mud pool, sometimes breaking up into droplets.
