A class of optical surfaces called 'Swept Conics' or 'Conical Spheroids' can be used to transform wavefronts from point sources to diffraction limited line or arc images, and vice versa.

A scanning system uses a polygonal mirror assembly with each facet of the polygon having an ellipsoidal mirror located thereon. One focal point of each ellipsoidal mirror is located at a common point on the axis of rotation of the polygonal mirror assembly. As the mirror assembly rotates. a second focal point of the ellipsoidal mirrors traces out a scan line. The scanner can be utilized for scanned output display of information or for scanning information to be detected.

A method and an apparatus are disclosed for edge phasing an array of segments in a segmented primary telescope mirror using white light from a far field source and starting with the inner edge of each segment in the first ring of segments. The segments are individually phased for zero piston and tilt error with respect to the edge of a reference surface in the open center position of the telescope mirror. After edge phasing of all segments in the telescope mirror array is completed, full surface phasing can be achieved by using a conventional Shack-Hartmann technique followed by finding the RMS best fit for each segment of the mirror array.

Techniques based on physical and on geometrical optics applied jointly. Proposed combination of measuring and computing techniques used to determine deviation of surface of large, segmented telescope from ideal surface figure and to compute adjustments in alignments of segments to obtain optimum available compensation for deviations.

A system for monitoring the configuration of a surface (e.g., a segmented parabolic surface) using orthogonally placed retroreflectors at sets of points 1, 2, and 3 dispersed throughout the surface with a stationary halfwave plate (HWP) in the front of the one retroreflector at a corner point 3 and a rotating halfwave plate (RHWP) over a source of linearly polarized coherent light, thereby causing the direction of linear polarization to continuously rotate through 360 deg and causing light returned by the retroreflector at point 3 to be continuously phase shifted through 360 deg relative to light returned by retroreflectors at points 1 and 2. The returned light from each set of points 1, 2, and 3 is focused onto a bed-of-nails (BON) phase grating diagonally oriented with respect to the orthogonal orientation of the incident beams from retroreflectors 1, 2, and 3, thereby causing overlap in the light from points 1 and 3 to produce interferometric signals 1,3 and 2,3. Any change in phase of the interferometric signals 1,3 and 2,3 indicates both the magnitude and direction of any change in the position of the retroreflector at point 3 relative to retroreflectors at points 1 and 2.

Proposed interferometer combination of sample-point interferometer and equal-path interferometer. Used to monitor optical figures of arrays of mirrors or of segmented mirrors. Incorporation of phase shifting with part of equal-path interferometer renders new interferometer insensitive to vibration and air turbulence. Instrument used over large distances, on ground, or on vibrating structures.

Report describes how to model optical-path-length errors caused by errors in fabrication and alignment of hexagonal segments of segmented mirror telescope. Study motivated by trend toward lightweight designs of astronomical reflectors composed of such segments, deployed or erected on ground or in space.

Proposed technique for measuring shapes and alignments of reflectors based on use of two-wavelength absolute-distance interferometer to generate optical-path-difference maps of reflecting or refracting surfaces. Facilitates such tasks as determining manufacturing and alignment errors of off-axis segment of large-aperture paraboloidal telescope mirror, or aligning all segments of such mirror. Suitable for use where reflecting surfaces highly aspherical, initial misalignments large, and/or surface errors exceed optical wavelengths.

Phasing an array with steep slopes and large surface errors, such as in NASA's Precision Segmented Reflector (PSR) Program for submillimeter astrophysics, is difficult using conventional optical techniques because the surface errors on the panels are large as compared with optical wavelengths. This paper extrapolates a procedure proposed by the Keck Observatory whereby physical optical techniques phase the edges of the panels, but with this technique they are phased with respect to a reference surface obtained from a high-quality central panel. A full-surface height-map is thereby obtained by integrating slope measurements, and full-surface phasing can be achieved using the modified and conventional Shack-Hartmann camera.

Proposed telescope offers wide field of view, yet relatively inexpensive to manufacture. Design, in form of three Schmidt cameras, offers 10-degree strip field of view, single large-diameter collecting aperture, four spherical mirrors, and two diamond-turned aspheric mirrors in relatively compact configuration. Transference of large-diameter Schmidt corrector plate to smaller element makes this wide-field optical system suitable for application of two-stage optics theory. Concept enables cost-effective implementation of large-diameter optics by relaxing fabrication requirements.

The Precision Segmented Reflector (PSR) program currently under way at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory is a test bed and technology demonstration program designed to develop and study the structural and material technologies required for lightweight, precision segmented reflectors. A Figure Verification Sensor (FVS) which is designed to monitor the active control system of the segments is described, a best fit surface is defined, and an image or wavefront quality of the assembled array of reflecting panels is assessed

The 20-m Large Deployable Reflector will have a segmented primary mirror. Achieving diffraction-limited performance at 50 microns requires correction for the errors of tilt and piston of the primary mirror. This correction can be obtained in two ways, the use of an active primary or a correction at a demagnified pupil of the primary. A critical requirement is the means for measurement of the wavefront error and maintaining phasing during the observation of objects that may be too faint for determining the error. Absolute phasing can only be determined using a cooperative source. Maintenance of phasing can be done with an on-board source. A number of options are being explored as discussed below. The many issues concerning the assessment and control of an active segmented mirror will be addressed with an early construction of the Precision Segmented Reflector testbed.

The design concept of an unobscured-wide-field two-stage optical system based on a virtual triple Schmidt (VTS) configuration is presented. It is pointed out that the single large aperture and field-partitioning capability of two-stage systems can lower material and fabrication costs, making the VTS optics suitable for ground-based and space telescopes. The VTS design combines a Schmidt-camera first stage and a second stage comprising two back-to-back Schmidt systems as a 1:1 relay. Aspheric Schmidt correction is achieved at the relayed pupil location for all three systems. The effects of the separation between the error-producing surface and the aperture stop are discussed; the performance of the wavefront-correction system is analyzed; and extensive diagrams, drawings, and graphs of projected performance data are provided.

Payload space limitations, high optical fidelity and the desirability of fast slew rates imply that certain broadband active pointing systems should be lightweight, compact and high performance with small moments of inertia. This paper describes a 12 inch diameter, F/5 reflective hybrid with two fields of view in the visible SWIR, and one field of view in the LWIR region. By incorporating two classic optical designs, these stringent requirements are met at a level as to assure reasonably attainable weight, size and performance estimates.
