High-power laser facilities may be restricted in operations by the risk of damage to optics due to the backscattering of laser light from the intended target. A portion of this backscattered light can re-enter the beam line and at sufficient fluence may damage (burn) optical apparatus. Here, the observed cumulative burn pattern on mirrors at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) due to stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) at the target is explained using detailed simulations. Our methodology involves using a measurement of a phase plate profile installed at the NIF to provide the laser input to a three-dimensional simulation of laser-plasma interaction in a target typical of that fielded at the NIF. Light scattered by SBS at the target is then followed back to the final aperture of the beam line, back through the phase plate, and to a mirror where damage typically occurs. We find that mirror damage patterns are largely dictated by the phase imprint of the phase plate on the returning SBS light. Our simulations show that the instantaneous SBS signal at the mirror varies on a picosecond time scale and is also highly modulated in space. Temporal averaging of the simulated SBS light pattern on the mirror reveals a pattern in close agreement with the experimentally observed damage. Understanding these burn patterns (distribution, modulation depth) may lead to future phase plate designs that limit damage throughout the optics assembly of high-powered laser facilities. A single beamline of the National Ignition Facility (NIF) has been operated at a wavelength of 526.5 nm (2[omega]) by frequency converting the fundamental 1053 nm (l[omega]) wavelength with an 18.2 mm thick type-I potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP) second-harmonic generator (SHG) crystal. Second-harmonic energies of up to 17.9 kJ were measured at the final optics focal plane with a conversion efficiency of 82%. We investigate the formation and diffraction efficiency of plasma gratings generated by the interference of two laser beams crossing at a small angle on the surface of a planar aluminum target. Such gratings were observed during National Ignition Facility experiments with the ratio of energy in the first-order to zeroth order of ≈60%. Recently, additional experiments were performed on the Optical Sciences Laser. These experiments with only two interfering beams showed high normalized energy (ratio of energy in diffracted order to zeroth order) of approximately 10% and 3% at the first and second diffracted order locations, respectively, for intensities less than 1012 W/cm2. The existence of the higher-orders is the characteristic of diffraction from gratings in the Raman-Nath as opposed to the Bragg regime. In addition, we show conical diffraction from the generated plasma grating. Using numerical simulations, we explore the large difference in diffraction efficiency observed in these two experiments and highlight the role of plasma temperature and density scale length. The simulations suggest a modulation depth of the plasma grating refractive index ranging from 1.77 × 10−4 to 3.5 × 10−2. These results are relevant to Inertial Confinement Fusion experiments or plasma photonics applications of gratings in high-field laser-physics and high-energy density science, specifically in the nanosecond regime. Time resolved hard x-ray images (hv>9 keV) and time integrated hard x-ray spectra (hv=18–150 keV) from vacuum hohlraums irradiated with four 351 nm wavelength National Ignition Facility [J. A. Paisner, E. M. Campbell, and W. J. Hogan, Fusion Technol. 26, 755 (1994)] laser beams are presented as a function of hohlraum size, laser power, and duration. The hard x-ray images and spectra provide insight into the time evolution of the hohlraum plasma filling and the production of hot electrons. The fraction of laser energy detected as hot electrons (Fhot) shows a correlation with laser intensity and with an empirical hohlraum plasma filling model. In addition, the significance of Au K-alpha emission and Au K-shell reabsorption observed in some of the bremsstrahlung dominated spectra is discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper a study of stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) from relatively planar plasmas irradiated with short-wavelength (0.53 µm) laser light is reported. The Novette Laser Facility [Laser Part. Beams 3, 173 (1985)] produced several kilojoules of light in 1 nsec, which allowed it to irradiate a large spot with enough intensity to produce significant Raman scattering. These experiments measured the fluence, angular distribution, spectrum, and timing of the Raman light, as a function of the average laser intensity. Reductions in the Raman fluence at low laser intensity are attributed to collisional damping. The measured SRS fluence was larger than that predicted from convective amplification of bremsstrahlung noise, as calculated using the average properties of the laser beam and the plasma. Possible contributions to the observed scattering from enhanced noise, Raman scattering within filaments, and the absolute Raman instability at density extrema are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The National Ignition Facility (NIF) is the world's largest laser system. It contains a 192 beam neodymium glass laser that is designed to deliver 1.8 MJ at 500 TW at 351 nm in order to achieve energy gain (ignition) in a deuterium-tritium nuclear fusion target. To meet this goal, laser design criteria include the ability to generate pulses of up to 1.8 MJ total energy, with peak power of 500 TW and temporal pulse shapes spanning 2 orders of magnitude at the third harmonic (351 nm or 3omega) of the laser wavelength. The focal-spot fluence distribution of these pulses is carefully controlled, through a combination of special optics in the 1omega (1053 nm) portion of the laser (continuous phase plates), smoothing by spectral dispersion, and the overlapping of multiple beams with orthogonal polarization (polarization smoothing). We report performance qualification tests of the first eight beams of the NIF laser. Measurements are reported at both 1omega and 3omega, both with and without focal-spot conditioning. When scaled to full 192 beam operation, these results demonstrate, to the best of our knowledge for the first time, that the NIF will meet its laser performance design criteria, and that the NIF can simultaneously meet the temporal pulse shaping, focal-spot conditioning, and peak power requirements for two candidate indirect drive ignition designs.

The first hohlraum experiments on the National Ignition Facility (NIF) using the initial four laser beams tested radiation temperature limits imposed by plasma filling. For a variety of hohlraum sizes and pulse lengths, the measured x-ray flux shows signatures of filling that coincide with hard x-ray emission from plasma streaming out of the hohlraum. These observations agree with hydrodynamic simulations and with an analytical model that includes hydrodynamic and coronal radiative losses. The modeling predicts radiation temperature limits with full NIF (1.8 MJ), greater, and of longer duration than required for ignition hohlraums.

Spatial filters are essential components for maintaining high beam quality in high-energy pulsed laser systems. The long-duration (21 ns) high-energy pulses envisioned for future inertial-confinement fusion drive systems, such as the U.S. National Ignition Facility (NIF), are likely to lead to increased plasma generation and closure effects within the pinholes in the spatial filters. The design goal for the pinhole spatial filter for the NIF design is to remove small-angle scatter in the beam to as little as a ?100-murad divergence. It is uncertain whether this design requirement can be met with a conventional pinhole design. We propose a new pinhole architecture that addresses these issues by incorporating features intended to reduce the rate of plasma generation. Initial experiments with this design have verified its performance improvement relative to a conventional pinhole design.

A versatile, rapidly convergent, iterative algorithm is presented for the construction of kinoform phase plates for tailoring the far-field intensity distribution of laser beams. The method consists of repeated Fourier transforming between the near-field and the far-field planes with constraints imposed in each plane. For application to inertial confinement fusion, the converged far-field pattern contains more than 95% of the incident energy inside a desired region and is relatively insensitive to beam aberrations.

Certain damage observed on the optics in NOVA is consistent with a phenomenon akin to holographic imaging. (NOVA is the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory's 10-beam Nd:glass laser used for inertial confinement fusion research.) The minimization of similar damage in next-generation laser systems is sought by first identifying the sources for these holographic images, specifying glass parameters appropriately, and staging the amplifier chain to circumvent the problem. The insight gained has lead to an explanation for a 20-year-old puzzle.
