Abstract

The SEM‐2 (Space Environment Monitor‐2) instrument embedded on the NOAA‐15 Low Earth Orbit satellite provides measurements of trapped protons in the Van Allen inner belt from 1998 to nowadays. This continuous set of measurements enables us to study the dynamics of the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA) over more than two solar cycles, particularly, its temporal evolution. We observe that the area of the SAA is anti‐correlated with the solar activity. Two physical processes explain this anticorrelation. First, the more the Sun is active the more it disables the cosmic rays to reach the Earth's magnetosphere and fill in the inner radiation belt with protons. Then, when the Sun is more active, the upper atmosphere is warmer and therefore absorbs more protons from the radiation belt. Then, we investigate the protons flux centroid of the SAA. The temporal evolution of its position, latitude and, longitude is studied over the same time interval (1998–2022). We notice that the latitude of the centroid is also anti‐correlated with the solar activity whereas the longitude seems absolutely independent. The temporal evolution of the position of the centroid shows a drift of the SAA. Indeed from 1998 to 2022 the SAA drifted of about 7° West. The SEM‐2 instrument measures flux for protons of different energies (16, 36, 70, and, 140 MeV). For each energy, the SAA dynamic has a similar trend but with different values. These differences are investigated and the results are discussed. 9. Radial shear in the flow at the Earth's core surface.

Abstract

The Earth's magnetic field at the core–mantle boundary is the gradient of a harmonic potential function if the mantle is electrically insulating, and the horizontal components of the field can be derived from its radial component in the mantle. Therefore, these components give no further observational information on the core dynamics. However, it can still be envisioned that the horizontal components of the induction equation at Earth's core surface yield further knowledge on the fluid motions at the top of the core independently of the observations. Here, we show that they provide a linear relationship between the surface velocity and the surface shear (strain shear) that depends on the mantle electrical conductivity. This offers a protocol to calculate the surface shear that we validate with synthetics obtained from dynamo simulations in the limit of a weak mantle conductance. First, using numerical simulations with stress-free boundary condition at the core surface, we retrieve the expected relationship between the horizontal flow u Σ and the shear, |${\bf u}_\Sigma =r\partial _r {\bf u}_{\Sigma }$|⁠. Next, we investigate simulations with no-slip boundary condition and insulating mantle, and we obtain the same relationship, even though the shear is not imposed as a boundary condition. Finally, we calculate the flow shear at the top of the core from a magnetic field model based on satellite measurements. The application to geophysical data indicates larger values of the surface flow shear than in the synthetic case, suggesting a possible role of the mantle electrical conductivity. The surface flow shear, in the simulations, much differs from the radial shear in the flow, deeper in the core, which is influenced by the mostly quasi-geostrophic geometry. This implies that we cannot rely on the relationship between the flow and the radial shear for quasi-geostrophic motions to exploit the horizontal components of the induction equation and gain further information on the flow at the Earth's core surface. Abstract

The inference of fluid motion below the core–mantle boundary from geomagnetic observations presents a highly non-unique inverse problem. We propose a new method that provides a unique local estimate of the velocity field, assuming quasi-geostrophic flow in the core interior (which implies equatorial mirror symmetry) and negligible magnetic diffusion. These assumptions remove the theoretical underdetermination, enabling us to invert for the flow at each point of a spherical grid representing the core surface. The unreliable reconstruction of small-scale flows, which arises because only large-scale observations are available, is mitigated by smoothing the locally estimated velocity field using a Gaussian process regression. Application of this method to synthetic data provided by a state-of-the-art geodynamo simulation suggests that using this approach, the large-scale flow pattern of the core surface flow can be well reconstructed, while the flow amplitude tends to be underestimated. We compare these results with a core flow inversion using a Bayesian framework that incorporates statistics from numerical geodynamo models as prior information. We find that whether the latter method provides a more accurate recovery of the reference flow than the local estimation depends heavily on how realistic/relevant the chosen prior information is. Abstract

The in-situ exploration of the low atmosphere and surface of Venus is clearly the next step of Venus exploration. Understanding the geochemistry of the low atmosphere, interacting with rocks, and the way the integrated Venus system evolved, under the combined effects of inner planet cooling and intense atmospheric greenhouse, is a major challenge of modern planetology. Due to the dense atmosphere (95 bars at the surface), balloon platforms offer an interesting means to transport and land in-situ measurement instruments. Due to the large Archimede force, a 2 cubic meter He-pressurized balloon floating at 10 km altitude may carry up to 60 kg of payload. LAVOISIER is a project submitted to ESA in 2000, in the follow up and spirit of the balloon deployed at cloud level by the Russian Vega mission in 1986. It is composed of a descent probe, for detailed noble gas and atmosphere composition analysis, and of a network of 3 balloons for geochemical and geophysical investigations at local, regional and global scales.

Abstract

Trabajo presentado en la European Geosciences Union General Assembly, celebrada en Viena (Austria), del 23 al 28 de abril de 2017, EPOS, the European Plate Observing System, is a long-term plan to facilitate the integrated use of data, data products, software and services, available from distributed Research Infrastructures (RI), for solid Earth science in Europe. Indeed, EPOS integrates a large number of existing European RIs belonging to several fields of the Earth science, from seismology to geodesy, near fault and volcanic observatories as well as anthropogenic hazards. The EPOS vision is that the integration of the existing national and trans-national research infrastructures will increase access and use of the multidisciplinary data recorded by the solid Earth monitoring networks, acquired in laboratory experiments and/or produced by computational simulations. The establishment of EPOS will foster the interoperability of products and services in the Earth science field to a worldwide community of users. Accordingly, the EPOS aim is to integrate the diverse and advanced European Research Infrastructures for solid Earth science, and build on new e-science opportunities to monitor and understand the dynamic and complex solid-Earth System. One of the EPOS Thematic Core Services (TCS), referred to as Satellite Data, aims at developing, implementing and deploying advanced satellite data products and services, mainly based on Copernicus data (namely Sentinel acquisitions), for the Earth science community. This work intends to present the technological enhancements, fostered by EPOS, to deploy effective satellite services in a harmonized and integrated way. In particular, the Satellite Data TCS will deploy five services, EPOSAR, GDM, COMET, 3D-Def and MOD, which are mainly based on the exploitation of SAR data acquired by the Sentinel-1 constellation and designed to provide information on Earth surface displacements. In particular, the planned services will provide both advanced DInSAR products (deformation maps, velocity maps, deformation time series) and value-added measurements (source model, 3D displacement maps, seismic hazard maps). Moreover, the services will release both on-demand and systematic products. The latter will be generated and made available to the users on a continuous basis, by processing each Sentinel-1 data once acquired, over a defined number of areas of interest; while the former will allow users to select data, areas, and time period to carry out their own analyses via an on-line platform. The satellite components will be integrated within the EPOS infrastructure through a common and harmonized interface that will allow users to search, process and share remote sensing images and results. This gateway to the satellite services will be represented by the ESA- Geohazards Exploitation Platform (GEP), a new cloud-based platform for the satellite Earth Observations designed to support the scientific community in the understanding of high impact natural disasters. Satellite Data TCS will use GEP as the common interface toward the main EPOS portal to provide EPOS users not only with data products but also with relevant processing and visualisation software, thus allowing users to gather and process on a cloud-computing infrastructure large datasets without any need to download them locally

Abstract

International audience; The eleventh generation of the International Geomagnetic Reference Field (IGRF) was adopted in December 2009 by the International Association of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy Working Group V-MOD. It updates the previous IGRF generation with a definitive main field model for epoch 2005.0, a main field model for epoch 2010.0, and a linear predictive secular variation model for 2010.0–2015.0. In this note the equations defining the IGRF model are provided along with the spherical harmonic coefficients for the eleventh generation. Maps of the magnetic declination, inclination and total intensity for epoch 2010.0 and their predicted rates of change for 2010.0–2015.0 are presented. The recent evolution of the South Atlantic Anomaly and magnetic pole positions are also examined.

Abstract

The solar-terrestrial relationship has been widely studied by means of space weather indices and various solar wind parameters. In this study we perform such an investigation over four decades (1960--2001) on the global scale, and for the first time on the regional scale as well. The variations regarded as the remaining external field signal (thereafter RES) and present in the European observatory annual means of the Northward, X, magnetic component is used as an indicator of the regional geomagnetic activity and are investigated regarding different processes occurring on the Sun. In order to understand how various geomagnetic activity indices respond to the interplanetary disturbances during different periods of the solar cycle, the annual means of the solar activity index, F10.7, and geomagnetic Ap and Dst indices, are studied. The indices are inherently complex since they include contributions from different solar phenomena. By studying the cross-correlations we aim to distinguish between different generation mechanisms. The relationships between the solar parameter F10.7 and RES, Dst, Ap, characterized by high cross-correlation coefficients, suggest the possibility to evaluate the behaviour of these geomagnetic parameters on short timescale. We found finite time lags among the investigated parameters. Our study suggests a one year delay of both RES and Dst after F10.7. The Ap is clearly delayed for about two years with respect to F10.7 and about one year with respect to Dst and RES. This indicate that the Ap responds to the solar activity in a different manner than Dst and RES, which are dominated by the coronal mass ejections activity. On the other hand, it seems that Ap is more sensitive to the high--speed streams (HSS) and Alfvenic waves present in HSS. The existence of time lags gives us the possibility to forecast different parameters. Importantly, the proposed forecasting procedure offers the possibility to reconstruct the F10.7 from the inferred geomagnetic activity for the epochs prior to solar activity monitoring. This study contributes to understanding some physical processes on the Sun that cause the perturbations in the near-Earth interplanetary space and consequently in the Earth's magnetic field. Moreover such investigations may provide a better insight into the time evolution of the open and closed solar magnetic field, and into long term changes in the solar activity with related physical processes.
