BackgroundHigh prevalence of sleep problems in not only children with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDS) but also non NDS has been established. However, there are few studies that have looked into population-based and age-specific prevalence of sleep problems of children. Moreover, there are even fewer studies that have investigated the correlation of demographic and lifestyle-related factors affecting sleep problems in children. Considering these, the purpose of this study is to assess the correlation of the prevalence of sleep problems and selected socio-demographic and lifestyle-related factors in 5-year-old Japanese children in population-based study.MethodsStudy children (SC) were recruited from two cohorts of the Hirosaki City 5-Year-Old Child Developmental Health Checkup Study. The first cohort consisted of 281 (162 males, 119 females) children recruited from 2014 to 2015, and the second cohort consisted of 2055 (1,068 males, 987 females) children from 2018 to 2019. In total there were 2,336 SC participants (1,230 males and 1,106 females). To determine the prevalence of sleep problems the Japanese Sleep Questionnaire for Preschoolers (JSQ-P) was utilized, and sleep problems are defined by a total score of ≥86. To determine socio-demographic and lifestyle-related factors affecting sleep, 10 factors (NDS diagnosis, birth month, childcare place, income, number of siblings, bedtime, waking time, sleeping hours, sleep onset delay, and screen time) were selected. Finally, to determine the correlation between prevalence of sleep problems and the selected demographic and lifestyle-related factors, data was analyzed using chi-square test.ResultsThe prevalence rate of sleep problems in 5-year-olds was 18% (369/2,055). Further, the prevalence of sleep problems was high in participants with ASD (50.4%), ADHD (39.8%), 22:00 of bedtime (30.7%), >7:30 of waking time (30.7%), 30 min of sleep onset delay (35.3%), and ≥2 h of screen time (21.1%).ConclusionThe findings report 18% prevalence rate of sleep problems in 5-year-old children. Further, the findings establish a significant correlation of sleep problems and NDS, specific socio-demographic, and lifestyle-related factors. In considering the identified modifiable lifestyle-related factors contributing to sleep problems among the participants (i.e., bed/waking times and screen times), sleep programs to address these concerns are suggested.

The direct use of detailed chemical kinetics in combustion simulations is limited by the extremely high computational costs. Recently, Owoyele and Pal (Energy and AI, 2022), proposed the neural ordinary differential equations (NODE) method to accelerate calculations of chemical kinetics and proved its effectiveness in zero-dimensional calculations of hydrogen combustion considering 9 species and 21 reactions. However, its performance for more realistic high-dimensional calculations and more complex kinetic systems remains unexplored. Therefore, this study further applies the method for more complex chemical kinetics of ammonia combustion, especially with optimizations in the data sampling, model training strategies, and model application methods that remedy the problems of versatility and application to more practical simulations. The newly developed NODE models are comprehensively validated in the zero-dimensional calculations of ammonia auto-ignition, one-dimensional calculations of laminar freely-propagating ammonia-premixed flames, and two-dimensional direct numerical simulation (DNS) of ammonia-premixed flames in a temporally evolving jet. Present NODE models focus on seven chemical species, namely NH3, O2, H2, OH, H2O, N2, and NO, and the results show that, compared with the results obtained by using detailed chemical kinetics, this method is able to reduce the computational costs of the zero-dimensional auto-ignition reaction to 1/24 while reproducing the ignition delay time for a wide range of initial temperatures and equivalence ratios with relatively good accuracy. Additionally, the method is able to reduce the computational costs of the one-dimensional freely propagating flame and two-dimensional jet flame to 1/4 and 1/38 respectively, while acceptable reproduction of the laminar flame speed and temporal evolution of the gas temperature and mass fractions of the interested species can be achieved.

Abstract Background Heterogeneous mental health outcomes during the COVID-19 pandemic are documented in the general population. Such heterogeneity has not been systematically assessed in youth with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and related neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD). To identify distinct patterns of the pandemic impact and their predictors in ASD/NDD youth, we focused on pandemic-related changes in symptoms and access to services. Methods Using a naturalistic observational design, we assessed parent responses on the Coronavirus Health and Impact Survey Initiative (CRISIS) Adapted For Autism and Related neurodevelopmental conditions (AFAR). Cross-sectional AFAR data were aggregated across 14 European and North American sites yielding a clinically well-characterized sample of N = 1275 individuals with ASD/NDD (age = 11.0 ± 3.6 years; n females = 277). To identify subgroups with differential outcomes, we applied hierarchical clustering across eleven variables measuring changes in symptoms and access to services. Then, random forest classification assessed the importance of socio-demographics, pre-pandemic service rates, clinical severity of ASD-associated symptoms, and COVID-19 pandemic experiences/environments in predicting the outcome subgroups. Results Clustering revealed four subgroups. One subgroup—broad symptom worsening only (20%)—included youth with worsening across a range of symptoms but with service disruptions similar to the average of the aggregate sample. The other three subgroups were, relatively, clinically stable but differed in service access: primarily modified services (23%), primarily lost services (6%), and average services/symptom changes (53%). Distinct combinations of a set of pre-pandemic services, pandemic environment (e.g., COVID-19 new cases, restrictions), experiences (e.g., COVID-19 Worries), and age predicted each outcome subgroup. Limitations Notable limitations of the study are its cross-sectional nature and focus on the first six months of the pandemic. Conclusions Concomitantly assessing variation in changes of symptoms and service access during the first phase of the pandemic revealed differential outcome profiles in ASD/NDD youth. Subgroups were characterized by distinct prediction patterns across a set of pre- and pandemic-related experiences/contexts. Results may inform recovery efforts and preparedness in future crises; they also underscore the critical value of international data-sharing and collaborations to address the needs of those most vulnerable in times of crisis.

Objectives Rural–urban healthcare disparities exist globally. Various countries have used a rurality index for evaluating the disparities. Although Japan has many remote islands and rural areas, no rurality index exists. This study aimed to develop and validate a Rurality Index for Japan (RIJ) for healthcare research.Design We employed a modified Delphi method to determine the factors of the RIJ and assessed the validity. The study developed an Expert Panel including healthcare professionals and a patient who had expertise in rural healthcare.Setting The panel members were recruited from across Japan including remote islands, mountain areas and heavy snow areas. The panel recruited survey participants whom the panel considered to have expertise.Participants The initial survey recruited 100 people, including rural healthcare providers, local government staff and residents.Primary outcome measures Factors to include in the RIJ were identified by the Expert Panel and survey participants. We also conducted an exploratory factor analysis on the selected factors to determine the factor structure. Convergent validity was examined by calculating the correlation between the index for physician distribution and the RIJ. Criterion-related validity was assessed by calculating the correlation with average life expectancy.Results The response rate of the final survey round was 84.8%. From the Delphi surveys, four factors were selected for the RIJ: population density, direct distance to the nearest hospital, remote islands and whether weather influences access to the nearest hospital. Despite the pivotal role of developmental surveillance in pediatric practice for the early detection of neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs), there are several barriers, including scarcity of time and staff availability, to its implementation. Additionally, inadequate parental knowledge on what to expect about their child's development contributes to potential delays in the early identification of NDDs. Home-based records (HBRs) are widely used in both high-income and low- and middle-income countries, allowing caregivers to prospectively chart the child's development, including milestone attainment, and thus can be a useful tool for developmental surveillance. Therefore, we analyzed data on milestone attainment from birth to 5 years of age obtained through the home-based records (the Maternal Child Health Handbook: MCHH) in 720 children who attended the Hirosaki Five-year-old children Developmental Health Check-up Study in Hirosaki, Japan to identify trajectory patterns of milestone attainment. Parallel process latent class growth analysis on four milestone domains (motor, social interaction, communication, and self-care) revealed three different trajectories (Class 1: “Consistent milestone attainment” group; 42%, Class 2: “subtle initial delay and catch-up” group; 45%, Class 3: “Consistent failure to attain expected milestones” group; 13%). In Class 3, 90% of children were diagnosed with at least one NDDs at age 5 and approximately 65% of children had autism spectrum disorder and/or intellectual disability, the rate of which was higher than that in the other two classes. Boys and preterm-born children were more likely to be assigned to classes with less favorable trajectories of milestone attainment. Although the use of the MCHH alone does not substitute diagnostic evaluation for NDDs, our study findings suggest the potential utility of the MCHH as a tool to educate parents on what longitudinal patterns of milestone attainment are concerning and require prompt visits to professionals.

Introduction: Providing postgraduate rural training programs has been recognised as central for successful recruitment and retention of medical workforce. While there have been many documented cases of rural training program development, documented program outcome evaluations are few. This review investigated how postgraduate training and educational programs for rural and remote medicine are evaluated worldwide. Through the use of a systematic review, the study explored three questions: 'What are the outcomes of postgraduate rural and remote training programs worldwide?', 'How are the program evaluations conducted?' and 'What evaluation models and approaches are used in evaluating the effectiveness of these training programs?' Methods: A qualitative synthesis was undertaken of evaluations of postgraduate rural training programs published in the English language in medical education journals. The study involved pooling quantitative and mixed-methods research data and findings from qualitative studies, which were aggregated, integrated and interpreted. PubMed, PsycINFO, ERIC and Web of Science databases were searched to identify studies that satisfy the search criteria. Results: Of the 1297 articles identified through the database search, 26 studies were included in the analysis. Most of the evidence from the studies consists of descriptive studies with some longitudinal tracking programs and cohort studies. Nine themes were identified: practice location after training completion; training location and decentralised model; educational aspects; incentives, political contexts and regulations; personal, social and cultural issues; professional development; rural orientation and community engagement; support system; and gender and racial issues. Key outcomes were analysed and cross-validated against the 2020 WHO guideline on health workforce development, attraction, recruitment and retention in rural and remote areas. These studies' most frequent evaluation methods were surveys, followed by interviews, questionnaires and secondary data from existing databases. Methodological characteristics, the relationship between rural background and program outcomes, and implications for decentralised training, telehealth and tele-assessment during the COVID-19 pandemic are discussed. Analysis from the key outcomes suggests evaluation as a strategy to uncover outcomes in postgraduate rural and remote training and medical education. Conclusion: Regardless of the similar outcomes, the program evaluations implemented and the robustness of evidence vary across programs and medical schools. The absence of solid evaluation designs and their alignment to the program objectives will lessen the strengths of evidence. Better quality research and evaluation design, objective settings, qualitative inquiry to uncover the contexts, and developing appropriate indicators and benchmarks for monitoring and evaluating strategies must be considered during program development and implementation.

Abstract Backgrounds Whether there is a true increase in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) frequency or not remains unclear. Additionally, the rates of co-existing neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD) in a total population sample has not been fully examined before. Therefore, using a total population sample in Japan, we aimed to estimate the prevalence and cumulative incidence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) annually, to determine whether there is a true increase in ASD prevalence by estimating the cumulative incidence of ASD annually, and to examine the rates of co-existing neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD). Method In this cross-sectional sequential design study, all 5-year-old children in the catchment area underwent the screening annually from the year 2013–2016. Screen-positive children were invited to participate in a comprehensive assessment, including child and parent interview, behavioral observation, and cognitive and motor function testing. All cases were reviewed by a multidisciplinary research team. Results Caregivers of 3954 children returned the screening, among which 559 children underwent the assessment with 87 children receiving an ASD diagnosis. Adjusted ASD prevalence was 3.22% (95% confidence interval (CI) 2.66–3.76%). The male to female ratio of the crude prevalence was 2.2:1. The cumulative incidence of ASD up to 5 years of age for the total study years was 1.31% (95% CI 1.00–1.62%). A generalized linear model revealed no significant linear trends in 5-year cumulative incidence over the study years. Only 11.5% of children had ASD alone; the remaining 88.5% were found to have at least one co-existing NDD. Limitations Modest sample size for a total population study. Conclusions Our findings demonstrate the stability of the 5-year cumulative incidence of ASD, implying no true rise in ASD incident cases over the 4-year study period in the study catchment area. High rates of co-existing NDDs reflect the importance of investigating broad developmental challenges in children with ASD.

Abstract Background Elucidating developmental changes in the symptoms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is important to support individuals with ASD. However, no report has clarified the developmental changes in attention to social information for a broad age range. The aim of this study was to investigate the developmental changes in attention to social information from early childhood to adolescence in individuals with ASD and typically developed (TD) children. Methods We recruited children with ASD (n = 83) and TD participants (n = 307) between 2 and 18 years of age. Using the all-in-one-eye-tracking system, Gazefinder, we measured the percentage fixation time allocated to areas of interest (AoIs) depicted in movies (the eyes and mouth in movies of a human face with/without mouth motion, upright and inverted biological motion in movies showing these stimuli simultaneously, people and geometry in preference paradigm movies showing these stimuli simultaneously, and objects with/without finger-pointing in a movie showing a woman pointing toward an object). We conducted a three-way analysis of variance, 2 (diagnosis: ASD and TD) by 2 (sex: male and female) by 3 (age group: 0–5, 6–11, and 12–18 years) and locally weighted the scatterplot smoothing (LOESS) regression curve on each AoI. Results In the face stimuli, the percentage fixation time to the eye region for the TD group increased with age, whereas the one for the ASD group did not. In the ASD group, the LOESS curves of the gaze ratios at the eye region increased up to approximately 10 years of age and thereafter tended to decrease. For the percentage fixation time to the people region in the preference paradigm, the ASD group gazed more briefly at people than did the TD group. Limitations It is possible that due to the cross-sectional design, the degree of severity and of social interest might have differed according to the subjects’ age. Conclusions There may be qualitative differences in abnormal eye contact in ASD between individuals in early childhood and those older than 10 years.

The central symptom of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is deficiency in social communication, which is generally viewed as being caused by pragmatic impairment (PI). PI is difficulty in using language appropriately in social situations. Studies have confirmed that PI is the result of neurological, cognitive, linguistic, and sensorimotor dysfunctions involving intricately intertwined factors. To elucidate the whole picture of this impairment, an approach from a multifaceted perspective fusing those factors is necessary. To this end, comprehensive PI mapping is a must, since no comprehensive mapping has yet been developed. The aim of this research is to present a model of annotation scheme development and corpus construction to efficiently visualize and quantify for statistical investigation occurrences of PI, which enables comprehensive mapping of PI in the spoken language of Japanese ASD individuals. We constructed system networks (lexicogrammatical option systems speakers make choices from) in the theoretical framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics, from which we developed an annotation scheme to comprehensively cover PI. Since system network covers all possible lexicogrammatical choices in linguistic interaction, it enables a comprehensive view of where and in what lexicogrammar PI occurs. Based on this annotation scheme, we successfully developed the Corpus of ASD + Typically Developed Spoken Language consisting of texts from 1,187 audiotaped tasks performed by 186 ASD and 106 typically developed subjects, accommodating approximately 1.07 million morphemes. Moreover, we were successful in the automatization of the annotation process by machine learning, accomplishing a 90 percent precision rate. We exemplified the mapping procedure with a focus on the spoken use of negotiating particles. Our model corpus is applicable to any language by incorporating our method of constructing the annotation scheme, and would give impetus to defining PI from a cross-linguistic point of view, which is needed because PI of ASD reflects cross-linguistic differences.

Targeting the evaluation of the universal droplet breakup process, measurements were made on diesel fuel sprays injected from two solenoid type injectors with different specifications. The velocity and size of the spray droplets were measured using a laser 2-focus velocimeter (L2F). The velocity of small droplets that follow the flow was taken as the air velocity. The Weber number was evaluated using the velocity of the droplets relative to air as the representative velocity. Since the spray expands in a conical shape with the nozzle hole at its apex, the measurement points were placed on a straight line from the apex, which is the estimated flight direction of droplets. The change in droplet size in the flight direction was considered to be due to secondary breakup, and the rate of decrease in droplet size during this process was evaluated. It was confirmed that the velocity and size of the droplets inside the spray injected from the two injectors varied over time, and the spatial distribution of the Weber number and the rate of droplet size decrease in the middle of the injection period was non-uniform and different. It was found that there is a positive correlation between the Weber number and the rate of droplet size decrease for both sprays, and that the relationship is nearly identical despite the fact that the characteristics are different between the two sprays. The secondary breakup process was shown to be independent of the injection conditions such as the diameter and number of nozzle holes.

Atypical eye gaze is an established clinical sign in the diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). We propose a computerized diagnostic algorithm for ASD, applicable to children and adolescents aged between 5 and 17 years using Gazefinder, a system where a set of devices to capture eye gaze patterns and stimulus movie clips are equipped in a personal computer with a monitor. We enrolled 222 individuals aged 5–17 years at seven research facilities in Japan. Among them, we extracted 39 individuals with ASD without any comorbid neurodevelopmental abnormalities (ASD group), 102 typically developing individuals (TD group), and an independent sample of 24 individuals (the second control group). All participants underwent psychoneurological and diagnostic assessments, including the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, second edition, and an examination with Gazefinder (2 min). To enhance the predictive validity, a best-fit diagnostic algorithm of computationally selected attributes originally extracted from Gazefinder was proposed. The inputs were classified automatically into either ASD or TD groups, based on the attribute values. We cross-validated the algorithm using the leave-one-out method in the ASD and TD groups and tested the predictability in the second control group. The best-fit algorithm showed an area under curve (AUC) of 0.84, and the sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy were 74, 80, and 78%, respectively. The AUC for the cross-validation was 0.74 and that for validation in the second control group was 0.91. We confirmed that the diagnostic performance of the best-fit algorithm is comparable to the diagnostic assessment tools for ASD.

Context: There is a worldwide shortage of physicians, which is worse in rural areas, with a large underserved rural and remote population. Most jurisdictions in countries of all income levels report shortages of rural doctors, often exacerbated where primary care is not strong. Japan is not an exception: Japanese specialist-driven approaches in medical education and public health have resulted in disproportionate distribution of medical services in the country. Issue: Rural generalism, or rural generalist medicine, is emerging in many jurisdictions as one approach to training and provision of care for rural communities. While there is considerable variation in titles, the format of the training and models of care, the emphasis is on training a generalist doctor capable of meeting community needs. This usually includes development of appropriate skills in primary care, inpatient care, emergency medicine, public health and one or more extended skills. These models are well established in Australia, particularly in Queensland, which has offered a rural generalist program for over a decade. The Rural Generalist Program Japan (RGPJ) has been developed to meet the needs of Japanese rural communities. Lessons learned: This article outlines development of the RGPJ using the World Federation for Medical Education standards. While early evaluations are positive, there is much more to do to develop a mature program capable of meeting the needs of Japan's rural and remote communities.

The Autism Spectrum Screening Questionnaire (ASSQ) is equipped with good properties for screening the broader phenotype of autistic traits, but it is standardized for a limited age range-from 7 to 16 years. To contribute to the early detection of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), particularly in high functioning children with ASD, likely to cause maladjustments during school age, the present study examined psychometric properties to apply the ASSQ to a younger age. We tested parents' ASSQ ratings for preschool children in clinical (N = 154, average age 60.77 months, range 55-72 months) and community settings (N = 1390, average age 60.53 months, range 57-68 months) in Japan. The results showed, just as in school-aged children, the ASSQ had reliability and validity as a screening instrument for preschool children in community settings. A cut-off of 7 with sensitivity of 0.93 and specificity of 0.84 is recommended for community screening. Still, based on the current study with a clinical group, an optimal cut-off score with high sensitivity and high specificity for parents' ASSQ ratings could not be established. The clinicians should be reminded that the ASSQ is a screening instrument, not a diagnosing instrument. Also, this result suggest multi-faceted evaluation is necessary in clinical settings, for example, the addition of teachers' ratings.

We have determined the distribution of aluminum in the epidermal cells of mature tea leaves using micro-beam particle-induced X-ray emission. The observed pattern of aluminum distribution in the epidermal cells suggests that aluminum exists in cell walls. Silicon exhibits a distribution that is nearly identical to that of aluminum, suggesting co-localization with aluminum.

The effect of aqueous environment on fast heavy-ion radiation damage of biomoleculeswas studied by comparative experiments using liquid- and gas-phase amino acid targets. Three types of amino acids with different chemical structures were used: glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline. Ion-induced reaction products were analyzed by time-of-flight secondary-ion mass spectrometry. The results showed that fragments from the amino acids resulting from the C--Cα bond cleavage were the major products for both types of targets. For liquid-phase targets, specific products originating from chemical reactions in solutions were observed. Interestingly, multiple dissociated atomic fragments were negligible for the liquid-phase targets. We found that the ratio of multifragment to total fragment ion yields was approximately half of that for gas-phase targets. This finding agreed with the results of other studies on biomolecular cluster targets. It is concluded that the suppression of molecular multifragmentation is caused by the energy dispersion to numerous water molecules surrounding the biomolecular solutes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: It has been reported that the onset of schizophrenia and the physical complications after its onset are related to diet. Diet has been considered as a variable factor of the pathogenesis of schizophrenia. However, the results of studies on this relationship have been inconsistent. Nutrients are consumed as a mixture in the diet. It is difficult to study them in isolation because they may have mutually complementary effects. The aim of this study was to assess the association between dietary patterns and schizophrenia in Japan. Methods: The subjects comprised 237 outpatients aged 30-60 years (123 males and 114 females) with diagnoses of either schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder. The patient diagnoses were determined based on medical records. Patients were recruited between June 2011 and August 2011. As a reference group, 404 healthy volunteers aged 30-60 years (158 males and 246 females) were also included. Demographic data (age, sex, and level of education) were collected by face-to-face method interviews and self-administered questionnaires. We assessed eating habits over the last month using a validated brief self-administered diet history questionnaire. We detected dietary patterns through a principal component analysis of calorie-adjusted intake; two principal components were retained. The principal components for each dietary pattern and for each individual were divided into tertiles by principal component scores. Results: We derived two dietary patterns by principal component analysis; namely, the "vegetable" dietary pattern and the "cereal" dietary pattern. In the "cereal" dietary pattern, the high tertile was associated with a significantly increased risk of schizophrenia (P<0.001). Conclusion: The "cereal" dietary pattern is associated with schizophrenia. This article is the first to describe a study examining the association of dietary pattern and schizophrenia. Background Obesity among patients with schizophrenia is a growing concern because being overweight is widely regarded as a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease and premature death. Dietary patterns have been suggested as one modifiable factor that may play a role in development of obesity. The objective of this study was to examine the association between dietary patterns and obesity among patients with schizophrenia in Japan. Methods We recruited patients (n = 338) aged 44.0 ± 13.2 (mean ± SD) years with a DSM-IV diagnosis of schizophrenia who were admitted to four psychiatric hospitals using a crosssectional design. Diet was assessed with a validated brief-type self-administered diet history questionnaire (BDHQ). Dietary patterns from 52 predefined food groups were extracted by principal component analysis. Results A total of 61 subjects (18.0%) were classified as obese. Three dietary patterns were identified: the healthy dietary pattern, the processed food dietary pattern, and the alcohol and accompanying dietary patterns. After adjusting for age and gender, patients within the high tertile of each healthy dietary pattern (OR = 0.29, 95% CI = 0.13 to 0.62) and processed food dietary pattern (OR = 0.44, 95% CI = 0.22 to 0.89) had a significantly lower risk for obesity compared with low tertile of dietary pattern. Conclusions Our findings suggest that dietary patterns, including higher intake of protein, fat, n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids, and vitamins, may be related to a decreased prevalence of obesity within patients with schizophrenia. Background: This study investigated the possible association between common and potentially functional polymorphisms of antioxidant enzymes and metabolic abnormalities in patients with schizophrenia. Methods: The possible associations of the glutathione S-transferase (GST) M1 null and GSTT1 null genotypes, and the superoxide dismutase 2 (SOD2) Val16Ala polymorphism with the risks of being overweight and having metabolic syndrome were examined using a logistic regression analysis in 154 schizophrenic Japanese patients and 203 controls. Results: Among smokers with schizophrenia, the risks of being overweight and having decreased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol were significantly higher in those with the GSTM1 null genotype than in those with the present genotype (odds ratio 3.20 and 3.15, P=0.03 and P=0.04, respectively), while among nonsmokers with schizophrenia, the risk of an abnormal waist circumference was lower in those with the GSTM1 null genotype (odds ratio 0.34, P=0.04). The risk of a decreased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol level was significantly higher in patients with the combined GSTM1 null and GSTT1 present genotypes than in those with the present genotypes of both genes (odds ratio 3.60, P,0.01). The SOD2 Val16Ala polymorphism was not associated with risk of metabolic abnormalities in either group. Conclusion: The present study suggests that the GSTM1 null genotype, in combination with smoking status or GSTT1 genotype, might be associated with the metabolic abnormalities in patients with schizophrenia. In this paper, we measured the concentrations and spatial distributions of aluminum and manganese with the growing period of a tea leaf. Both elemental concentrations increased with the growing period and showed a rapid increase between five and six months. Aluminum showed clear localization in the epidermis with the growing period. Manganese did not show clear localization like aluminum throughout the growing period. The spatial correlation between aluminum and manganese were not observed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
