Abstract Photonic integrated circuits (PICs) represent a promising technology for the much-needed medical devices of today. Their primary advantage lies in their ability to integrate multiple functions onto a single chip, thereby reducing the complexity, size, maintenance requirements, and costs. When applied to optical coherence tomography (OCT), the leading tool for state-of-the-art ophthalmic diagnosis, PICs have the potential to increase accessibility, especially in scenarios, where size, weight, or costs are limiting factors. In this paper, we present a PIC-based CMOS-compatible spectrometer for spectral domain OCT with an unprecedented level of integration. To achieve this, we co-integrated a 512-channel arrayed waveguide grating with electronics. We successfully addressed the challenge of establishing a connection from the optical waveguides to the photodiodes monolithically co-integrated on the chip with minimal losses achieving a coupling efficiency of 70%. With this fully integrated PIC-based spectrometer interfaced to a spectral domain OCT system, we reached a sensitivity of 92dB at an imaging speed of 55kHz, with a 6dB signal roll-off occurring at 2mm. We successfully applied this innovative technology to obtain 3D in vivo tomograms of zebrafish larvae and human skin. This ground-breaking fully integrated spectrometer represents a significant step towards a miniaturised, cost-effective, and maintenance-free OCT system.

Optical coherence tomography: chip promise The goal of an optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging system that is integrated on a photonic chip has taken a step closer to reality. Elisabet Rank and coworkers from Austria have shown that arrayed waveguide gratings (AWGs), integrated-optical devices commonly used to separate different wavelength channels in an optical communications system, can be used to replace diffraction gratings in an OCT system. Several designs of silicon nitride AWGs with 256 channels in the near-infrared were fabricated and then tested in an OCT system which was able to capture in-vivo tomograms and angiography of the human eye’s retina, with comparable quality to a conventional system. The next stage of the OCT-on-a-chip research will focus on exploring the use of multimode interference structures, integrated photodiodes, and compact light sources.

A colorless ONU is demonstrated on the polymer-based hybrid integration platform. Polymer Bragg gratings provide power-efficient wavelength tuning over the C-band. Thin-film element is inserted in the waveguide circuits for C/L band splitting and bi-directional transmission. On-chip U-groove and 45° mirror allow submount-free and passive attachment of optical fiber and photo detectors, respectively. Arrays of deep-etched air trenches are introduced for cross-talk suppression. With an optical wavelength rejection level larger than 34 dB, 10-Gb/s bidirectional transmission and detection are achieved. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Multicore, compact, and low-crosstalk polymer waveguides have been designed, fabricated, and characterized. These single-mode waveguides are arranged in five layers following a hexagonal lattice with 20-\(\mu \) m pitch. The waveguides exhibit similar propagation loss of <;1 dB/cm (at 1550 nm) without any polarization-dependent effect. The interwaveguide crosstalk remains below -40 dB at 3.8-cm propagation length. A series of multistep 45° mirrors have been introduced to extract light from each of the individual layers. The mirror loss ranges from 1.5 to 1.9 dB, with deep mirrors being gradually more loss-prone due to the free-space beam broadening. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Multimode interference couplers (MMIs) are fundamental building blocks in photonic integrated circuits. Here it is experimentally demonstrated, for the first time, a two-fold length reduction in an MMI coupler without any penalty on device performance. The design is based on a slotted 2 × 2 MMI fabricated on a commercial silicon-on-insulator (SOI) substrate. The slot is implemented with a subwavelength grating (SWG) comprising holes fully etched down to the oxide cladding, thereby allowing single etch step fabrication. The device has been designed using an in-house tool based on the Fourier Eigenmode Expansion Method. It has a footprint of only 3.5 μm x 23 μm and it exhibits a measured extinction ratio better than 15 dB within the full C-band (1530 nm-1570 nm). SWG engineered slots thus offer excellent perspectives for the practical realization of MMIs couplers with substantially reduced footprint yet with outstanding performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we present a novel concept for a multi-channel swept source optical coherence tomography (OCT) system based on photonic integrated circuits (PICs). At the core of this concept is a low-loss polarization dependent path routing approach allowing for lower excess loss compared to previously shown PIC-based OCT systems, facilitating a parallelization of measurement units. As a proof of concept for the low-loss path routing, a silicon nitride PIC-based single-channel swept source OCT system operating at 840 nm was implemented and used to acquire in-vivo tomograms of a human retina. The fabrication of the PIC was done via CMOS-compatible plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition to allow future monolithic co-integration with photodiodes and read-out electronics. A performance analysis using the results of the implemented photonic building blocks shows a potential tenfold increase of the acquisition speed for a multi-channel system compared to an ideal lossless single-channel system with the same signal-to-noise ratio.

An optical filter based on all-polymer grating-assisted directional coupler is demonstrated. The wavelength tuning is differentially driven. The heater-electrodes created on the sidewalls of the polymer ridge can either blue- or red-shift the central wavelength. A total tuning range of 301 nm is achieved experimentally. The maximal local temperature gradient introduced across the coupler region is only 55°C-68°C. The filter is also insensitive to uniform ambient temperature change. Central wavelength jitter of ±3  nm is observed when the chip holder temperature cycles between 20°C and 80°C.

We propose an ultra-broadband multimode interference (MMI) coupler with a wavelength range exceeding the O, E, S, C, L and U optical communication bands. For the first time, the dispersion property of the MMI section is engineered using a subwavelength grating structure to mitigate wavelength dependence of the device. We present a 2 × 2 MMI design with a bandwidth of 450nm, an almost fivefold enhancement compared to conventional designs, maintaining insertion loss, power imbalance and MMI phase deviation below 1dB, 0.6dB and 3°, respectively. The design is performed using an in-house tool based on the 2D Fourier Eigenmode Expansion Method (F-EEM) and verified with a 3D Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) simulator.

Directional couplers are extensively used devices in integrated optics, but suffer from limited operational wavelength range. Here we use, for the first time, the dispersive properties of sub-wavelength gratings to achieve a fivefold enhancement in the operation bandwidth of a silicon-on-insulator directional coupler. This approach does not compromise the size or the phase response of the device. The sub-wavelength grating based directional coupler we propose covers a 100 nm bandwidth with an imbalance of ≤ 0.6 dB between its outputs, as supported by full 3D FDTD simulations.
