Background Diet plays a key role in the ageing process. Despite this, little is known about the effect of dietary patterns on older adults' nutritional status. The main aim of this study was to analyse the association between a posteriori derived dietary patterns (DPs) and nutritional status among community dwellers aged [greater than or equal to]65. Methods Cross-sectional study including a representative sample of the community-dwelling Portuguese population aged [greater than or equal to]65 (n = 849, mean age 74.1 years old). Data were collected through computer-assisted, face-to-face interviews. Dietary patterns were derived a posteriori based on two 24-h recalls by a latent class transition model. Nutritional status was assessed by the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA.sup.®) and measured body mass index (BMI). Associations were estimated by regression models. MNA score was reversed and log-transformed considering its skewed distribution. Results Two DPs were identified: 22.0% of the studied population followed a 'Protein-based foods' DP (highest consumption of legumes, meats and sweets), and 59.1% followed a 'Mediterranean' DP (highest consumption of vegetables, fruits, dairy, cereals/tubers, bread, fishery and olive oil). Moreover, 18.9% switched between those patterns ('In-between' DP). After adjustment, the 'Protein-based foods' DP was associated with better MNA score (EXP([beta]) = 0.716, 95% CI 0.533, 0.962), compared to the 'Mediterranean' DP, particularly for total energy intake up to 2200 kcal/day. No significant associations were found between DPs and BMI. Conclusions A protein-based pattern is associated with lower malnutrition risk in older adults, when considering an adequate energy intake. This should be taken into account when designing and disseminating food-based guidelines for healthy ageing., Author(s): Teresa Madeira [sup.1] [sup.2] , Milton Severo [sup.3] [sup.4] , Andreia Oliveira [sup.3] [sup.4] , João Gorjão Clara [sup.1] [sup.2] , Carla Lopes [sup.3] [sup.4] Author Affiliations: (1) Instituto [...]

The synthesis and twin polymerization (TP) of Si(OCH2py)4 (3 a, py=2‐cC5H4N; 3 b, py=3‐cC5H4N; 3 c, py=4‐cC5H4N) is discussed. The solid state structures of 3 b, c were confirmed by single‐crystal X‐ray crystallography showing non‐conventional H‐bonding, forming 2D chains (3 b) or 3D networks (3 c). Thermally induced TP of 3 a–c and their simultaneous polymerization with 2,2'‐spiro‐bi[4H‐1,3,2‐benzodioxasiline] (4) is described. The resulting hybrid materials were characterized by 1H, 13C{1H}, and 29Si{1H} CP MAS NMR spectroscopy confirming the transformation of the SiOCH2 moieties into CH2 groups enabling the formation of the respective polymers. These results were supported by HAADF‐STEM studies, displaying micro‐structuring. Nitrogen‐containing porous carbon materials C_1–C_3 show surface areas of 1300 and 1700 m2 g−1, large pore volumes between 0.6–1.2 cm3 g−1, and nitrogen contents of up to 3.1 at‐%. X‐ray photoemission spectroscopy reveal that pyrrolic, pyridine, and pyridone nitrogen atoms are present. If equimolar amounts of 3 a–c and 4 are simultaneously polymerized in the presence of [Pd(OAc)2] (5), then the Pd nanoparticle‐decorated material Pd@C_3 (900 m2 g−1) was obtained, which showed k values of −0.083 and −0.066 min−1 in the reduction of methylene blue and methyl orange, proving the accessibility of the Pd NPs. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with a representative sample of 613 older adults, aged 65 or older, who participated in the PROKnos – Knowing Social Prescribing needs of the elderly study in Portugal. The questionnaire consisted of the Active Ageing Awareness Questionnaire and the World Health Organization – Five Well-Being Index, as well as sociodemographic, economic, and health status questions. Correlation coefficients, t-tests for independent samples, and one-way ANOVA were used to explore potential associations between variables. Results: The active aging awareness levels were significantly higher for women (p = 0.031), and those who were younger (p = 0.011), more educated (p < 0.001), had a better financial situation (p < 0.001), and had better health (p < 0.001). The same pattern was found for well-being, except in relation to gender, as men had higher levels (p = 0.016). These variables were found to be correlated. Discussion: Even though active aging is an important strategy to implement, it is indispensable to consider the perceptions and conditions that need to be in place before that. This study reveals that several social and health-related factors are associated with well-being and active aging awareness, as well as the differences between groups that exist in mainland Portugal in relation to that. This emphasizes how vital it is to address social inequalities in active aging efforts, which are not necessarily uncovered when only considering actual active aging measures., This study is part of the research program of the General Foundation of the University of Salamanca, through the International Centre on Aging (CENIE), within the framework of the Programme for a Longevity Society (0551_PSL_6_E), a project co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the Interreg VA Spain-Portugal Programme (POCTEP) 2014–2020.

Therefore, this cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the levels of health literacy demonstrated by older adults in Portugal and explore associated factors. Using a randomly generated list of telephone numbers, adults aged 65 years or more living in mainland Portugal were contacted in September and October 2022. Sociodemographic, health and healthcare-related variables were collected, and the 12-item version of the European Health Literacy Survey Project 2019–2021 was used to measure health literacy. Then, binary logistic regression models were used to investigate factors associated with limited general health literacy. In total, 613 participants were surveyed. The mean level of general health literacy was (59.15 ± 13.05; n = 563), whereas health promotion (65.82 ± 13.19; n = 568) and appraising health information (65.16 ± 13.26; n = 517) were the highest scores in the health literacy domain and the dimension of health information processing, respectively. Overall, 80.6% of respondents revealed limited general health literacy, which was positively associated with living in a difficult household financial situation (4.17; 95% Confidence Interval (CI): 1.64–10.57), perceiving one’s own health status as poorer (7.12; 95% CI: 2.02–25.09), and having a fair opinion about a recent interaction with primary healthcare services (2.75; 95% CI: 1.46–5.19). The proportion of older adults with limited general health literacy in Portugal is significant. This result should be considered to inform health planning according to the health literacy gap of older adults in Portugal., This study is part of the research programme of the General Foundation of University of Salamanca through the International Centre on Aging (CENIE) within the framework of the Programme for a Longevity Society (0551_PSL_6_E), a project co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the Interreg VA Spain-Portugal Programme (POCTEP) 2014–2020.

Plasmonics using metal nanoparticles (MNPs) has emerged as an important research subject in the field of photonics, electronics, and nanotechnology. Despite spectacular progress in recent years, accurate tuning and modeling of plasmon resonances over a wide spectral range using state-of-the-art fabrication methods are still challenging tasks. Here, we report on the fine-tuning of the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of metal nanoparticles over a wide spectral range from near-infrared to blue using nanosphere lithography (NSL). In this systematic study, we use NSL to fabricate triangular shaped metal nanostructures using gold, silver, copper, and aluminum. All structures were annealed up to 500 °C under a nitrogen atmosphere in order to study the effect of annealing on the LSPR. Structural changes were investigated using scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. UV-VIS spectroscopy was used to determine the LSPR spectral position for these structures. The LSPR peak position is ordered as copper, gold, silver, and aluminum (from low to high photon energy—ranging from near-infrared to blue). The rate at which the LSPR changes with respect to the increasing annealing temperature is determined to be (2.3 ± 0.3) nm/°C and (1.3 ± 0.1) nm/°C for Ag and Au, respectively, while Cu MNPs show a two-step relation with a steeper slope of (1.4 ± 0.3) nm/°C initially up to 275 °C followed by a shallower slope of (0.5 ± 0.1) nm/°C. The full width at half maximum of the LSPR increases from gold over silver and copper to aluminum. We also performed finite element method simulations to validate the experimental findings. Our results can have a significant impact in plasmonic applications where fine-tuning and accurate designing of the LSPR are important. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Titanium dioxide (TiO
2 ) in the form of thin films has attracted enormous attention for photocatalysis. It combines the fundamental properties of TiO2 as a large bandgap semiconductor with the advantage of thin films, making it competitive with TiO2 powders for recycling and maintenance in photocatalytic applications. There are many aspects affecting the photocatalytic performance of thin film structures, such as the nanocrystalline size, surface morphology, and phase composition. However, the quantification of each influencing aspect needs to be better studied and correlated. Here, we prepared a series of TiO2 thin films using a sol-gel process and spin-coated on p-type, (100)-oriented silicon substrates with a native oxide layer. The as-deposited TiO2 thin films were then annealed at different temperatures from 400 °C to 800 °C for 3 h in an ambient atmosphere. This sample synthesis provided systemic parameter variation regarding the aspects mentioned above. To characterize thin films, several techniques were used. Spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE) was employed for the investigation of the film thickness and the optical properties. The results revealed that an increasing annealing temperature reduced the film thickness with an increase in the refractive index. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was utilized to examine the surface morphology, revealing an increased surface roughness and grain sizes. X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and UV-Raman spectroscopy were used to study the phase composition and crystallite size. The annealing process initially led to the formation of pure anatase, followed by a transformation from anatase to rutile as the annealing temperature increased. An overall enhancement in crystallinity was also observed. The photocatalytic properties of the thin films were tested using the photocatalytic decomposition of acetone gas in a home-built solid (photocatalyst)–gas (reactant) reactor. The composition of the gas mixture in the reaction chamber was monitored using in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Finally, all of the structural and spectroscopic characteristics of the TiO2 thin films were quantified and correlated with their photocatalytic properties using a correlation matrix. This provided a good overview of which film properties affect the photocatalytic efficiency the most. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

Malnutrition (synonym: undernutrition) is prevalent among older adults, which may be partly related to changes in dietary intake, but evidence on the link between malnutrition and diet is scarce. The aims of this study were to estimate the association between energy/nutrients intake and malnutrition, and to characterise nutritional inadequacy in institutionalised and non-institutionalised older adults. A national survey was conducted including a Portuguese representative sample of nursing home (NH) residents (n 563) and community-dwellers (n 837) aged ≥ 65 years. Data included socio-demographic characteristics, self-reported health, loneliness feelings, nutritional status (Mini Nutritional Assessment
® ) and dietary intake (two non-consecutive 24-h recalls). A higher energy intake was associated with lower odds of malnutrition risk (being 'at risk of malnutrition' or 'malnourished') in both settings, but only significant among NH residents after adjusting for confounders (NH: OR = 0·66, 95 % CI 0·50, 0·86; community: OR = 0·64, 95 % CI 0·37, 1·10). The intake of carbohydrates, fat, fibre, vitamin C, Na, K and Mg was inversely associated with malnutrition risk in NH residents, and protein, fat, vitamin B6 , folates, Na, K, Ca and Mg intake in community-dwellers. After additional adjustment for total energy, only Na and Mg intake of community-dwellers remained significantly associated. The prevalence of inadequate nutrient intake was generally higher for the malnutrition risk group, which was particularly evident among community-dwellers. The effect of dietary intake on nutritional status seems more dependent on total energy and carbohydrates intake in institutionalised elders, whereas among community-dwellers protein and some micronutrients appear to have a greater impact. Evidence on how gender intersects with relevant social constructs in later phases of life is scarce. This investigation examined gender inequalities in perceived health status (self-perceived general health; SPGH) by Portuguese elderly community-dwellers while considering psycho-social and socio-demographic determinants. This study used data from a representative sample of community-dwellers aged ≥65 years (N = 920), who were enrolled in the Portuguese Elderly Nutritional Status Surveillance System (PEN-3S) project. Associations between SPGH and socio-demographic and psycho-social variables, functionality and self-reported morbidity were tested; indirect effects of relevant predictors on SPGH were also tested using a bootstrap method. Gender inequalities in health were found: women significantly rated their health worse than men; overall, participants rated their health as fair. Education, functional status, depression symptoms and self-reported morbidity significantly predicted SPGH among women, whereas only the latter two were associated with SPGH among men. For both genders, depression was the strongest predictor of SPGH. Mediation analyses detected indirect effects of cognitive function and loneliness feelings on SPGH among older adults. Results herein provide insights on the predictive role of psycho-social variables on SPGH and support the need for considering the context when addressing the correlates of SPGH among Portuguese older adults. Altogether, these findings might support cost-effective interventions targeting the most vulnerable groups of the population to inequalities in health and its predictors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Both malnutrition (which here refers to undernutrition) and obesity are prevalent in older adults, but they are frequently seen as mutually exclusive. In fact, a low body mass index (BMI) is one of the aetiological diagnostic criteria for malnutrition. On the contrary, the concomitant presence of malnutrition and obesity has been less studied. The aim of this study was to characterise the nutritional status of community-dwelling older adults (u226565 years old) living in Portugal. The study included a nationally representative sample of randomly selected community-dwelling older adults. Trained nutritionists collected data through face-to-face structured interviews regarding sociodemographic characteristics, nutritional status and anthropometric measures (namely, weight and height), among other variables of the PEN-3S study. Nutritional status was assessed by the 18-item Mini Nutritional Assessment (full MNAu00ae), in which a lower score indicates worse nutritional status. The World Health Organisationu2019s (WHO) BMI cut-offs for adults were followed (obesity: BMIu226530Kg/m2). MNA and BMI categories estimates (95% CI) were obtained using Complex Samples analysis (SPSSu00ae 24.0). Non-difference between sexes was analysed with Chi-square tests. Complete information was available for 1110 community-dwelling participants (mean age: 75.9u00b18.1 years; 48.9% women; 71.4% attended school for

Objectives: Self-perceived health declines with age, varies by gender and is a predictor of mortality, morbidity, physical and psychological functioning. However, gender differences in health and illness perception are complex and not yet fully understood. This study aimed to explore gender-related differences in psychosocial determinants of self-perceived health among older adults living in nursing homes. Method: Nationwide face-to-face survey of the Portuguese population aged 65 and over. A representative sample of nursing homes residents was obtained through a multistage cluster random sampling of nursing homes, stratified by main Portuguese administrative regions (NUTS II). Results: Overall, 1186 nursing homes residents voluntarily enrolled in this study (participation rate, 93%) and a total of 515 participants (70.1% women) were considered to have adequate cognitive functioning to answer all questionnaires. A significant association between self-rated health and gender was found: 90.6% of all women (95% CI: 85.7—93.9) and 82.3% of all men (95% CI: 72.9—88.9) rated their health as less than good (p = 0.023). Gender-stratified analyses showed differences in psychosocial determinants of self-perceived health. While symptoms of depression and loneliness feelings were the major psychosocial determinants of poor self-perceived health among women, age and subjective financial well-being were the only determinants among men. Conclusion: Factors associated with perceived health, as representative of healthy ageing, were identified by gender, leading to future avenues for fruitful investigation. The acknowledgement of interpersonal and socioeconomic factors that determine the experience of ageing at a national level is crucial to improve the health of elders. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To characterise the nutritional status and to identify malnutrition-associated variables of older adults living in Portuguese nursing homes.Design: Cross-sectional study. Data on demographic and socio-economic characteristics, self-reported morbidity, eating-related problems, nutritional status, cognitive function, depression symptoms, loneliness feelings and functional status were collected by trained nutritionists through a computer-assisted face-to-face structured interview followed by standardised anthropometric measurements. Logistic regression was used to identify factors associated with being at risk of malnutrition/malnourished.Setting: Portuguese nursing homes.Subjects: Nationally representative sample of the Portuguese population aged 65 years or over living in nursing homes. Results: A total of 1186 individuals (mean age 83·4 years; 72·8 % women) accepted to participate. According to the Mini Nutritional Assessment, 4·8 (95 % CI 3·2, 7·3) % were identified as malnourished and 38·7 (95 % CI 33·5, 44·2) % were at risk of malnutrition. These percentages increased with age and were significantly higher for women. Logistic regression showed (OR; 95 % CI) that older adults reporting no or little appetite (6·5; 2·7, 15·3), those revealing symptoms of depression (2·6; 1·6, 4·2) and those who were more dependent in their daily living activities (4·7; 2·0, 11·1) were also at higher odds of being malnourished or at risk of malnutrition. Conclusions: Malnutrition and risk of malnutrition are prevalent among nursing home residents in Portugal. It is crucial to routinely screen for nutritional disorders, as well as risk factors such as symptoms of depression and lower functional status, to prevent and treat malnutrition. Bariatric surgery is recognized as the most effective method for achieving relevant weight loss in subjects with severe obesity. However, there is insufficient knowledge about weight self-regulation and quality of motivation in these patients. The main goal of this study was to characterize the association between the percentage of excess weight loss (%EWL) and the motivation to manage weight, at least 1 year after sleeve gastrectomy (SG). This is an observational longitudinal retrospective study. All patients corresponding to predefined inclusion criteria who underwent SG from January 2008 to July 2010 at a main general hospital were invited. A version of the Treatment Self-Regulation Questionnaire (TSRQ) was used to assess patients’ quality of motivation: TSRQ concerning continuing the weight self-management program. Clinical data were collected from patients’ records. Overall, 81 patients participated (16 men and 65 women, 25-64 years old). The average body mass index was significantly reduced from 45.3 ± 7.0 kg/m2 preoperatively to 32.7 ± 6.9 kg/m2 postoperatively. Autonomous self-regulation was higher than externally controlled self-regulation, regarding motives to keep managing weight after SG. Postoperatively, %EWL correlated negatively with external self-regulation. SG was found to be associated with the quality of motivation for losing weight. External motivations were associated with worse results. These findings support the importance of multiprofessional teams in the assessment and treatment of patients, aiming for the promotion of weight self-regulation after bariatric surgery. - Abstract
This paper describes a library-based project involving the library staff at the Institute of Technology Carlow (ITC), in a collaboration led by the European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST), Action MP1302 Nanospectroscopy. The project uses a comprehensive scoping methodology, an Advanced Scoping Meta-Review (ASMR), to identify significant topics in an emergent subject area; Optical Nanospectroscopy. An agreed mapping of the subject is derived in order to deliver a pedagogically coherent structure for a three-volume textbook set intended primarily for Early Stage Researchers (ESR). The review process is based on some earlier scoping methodologies, but is devised for a project involving a large number of individuals collaborating in authorship of the textbooks. A description of the scoping process is given, noting both the specific work in searching for and retrieving the appropriate literature, the qualitative and quantitative analysis and ordering of the search results, and placing the meta-review in the wider context of the editorial process to develop the Nanospectroscopy textbooks. The meta-review is employed in a special way in order to map an emergent subject area for the purpose of textbook development, rather than the more traditional use of such reviews to answer specific research questions. The importance of the library-led searching which underpinned this activity is emphasised. The successful outcome of this process resulting in agreement on the detailed content of three volumes is discussed. The paper ends with a critical evaluation of the lessons that can be drawn from this project. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Worldwide we are facing a serious demographic challenge due to the dramatic growth of the population over 60 years. It is expected that the proportion of this population will nearly double from 12 to 22 %, between 2015 and 2050. This demographic shift comes with major health and socio-economic concerns. Nutrition is a fundamental determinant of both health and disease and its role in extending a healthy lifespan is the object of considerable research. Notably, malnutrition is one of the main threats to health and quality of life among the elderly. Therefore, knowledge about nutritional status among the elderly is essential for the promotion and maintenance of healthy ageing and to support the development of health protection policies and equity in elderly health care. Methods: This is a nationwide nutrition survey of the Portuguese population over 65 years old, with data collection through face-to-face interviews. A representative and random sample of community dwelling elderly and nursing homes residents will be obtained by multistage sampling stratified per main Portuguese regions, sex and age groups. Minimum sample size was estimated to be 2077 elderly (979 in the community and 1098 in nursing homes). Data will be collected on food habits and eating patterns, nutritional status, food insecurity, lifestyle, self-rated general health status and self-reported diseases, functionality, loneliness, cognitive function, emotional status and demographic and socio-economic characterization.Discussion: This is the first national survey to evaluate the prevalence of nutritional risk and malnutrition of the Portuguese population above 65 years old, including those living in nursing homes. It will allow the identification of population subgroups of elderly with increased odds of malnutrition and nutritional risk. In addition, this survey will contribute to the identification of psychosocial and clinical predictors of malnutrition among elderly, which is an important risk factor for other devastating medical conditions. FIGURINES , *WAXES , *ENERGY dispersive X-ray spectroscopy , *X-ray fluorescence , *ORGANIC wastes , *SCANNING electron microscopy - Abstract
Eight complementary techniques were successfully applied to study a pair of very alike eighteenth-century colored wax figurines belonging to the Museu Nacional Machado de Castro, Coimbra (Portugal): examination under visible and ultraviolet light, X-ray radiography (XRR), neutron radiography and tomography (NR and NT), energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF), scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), micro-X-ray diffraction (μ-XRD), gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and micro-confocal Raman spectroscopy (μ-Raman). A careful examination of the two objects provided an insight into their manufacturing and revealed that they were cast from the same molds, although details differ. The main cast material employed was a mixture of beeswax, Venice turpentine, other diterpenoid resins and a very low amount of lipids. The wax used was certainly reclaimed from a metallurgic activity involving lost-wax casting. Each figurine consists of sixteen parts, most of which consist of solid wax. The presence of fillings within the body was unexpected. The elements which remained hollowed played a fundamental role at the assembling stage. A loose wooden tenon helped to keep the head in place and metal rods were used to fasten the base to the main body. Polychromy was carried out in wax, with different pigments and opacifiers. The fabrication of the colored wax from different inorganic/organic wastes is also discussed. Textures were achieved by adding materials. The results gathered offered the unique opportunity to verify aspects inherent to the production of multiple copies in wax casting. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Museu Nacional Soares dos Reis (Oporto) owns a pair of Japanese folding screens belonging to the early 17th century - Namban genre. As the pieces manifested structural conservation issues, they were subjected to an intervention between 2000 and 2002 in the National Research Institute for Cultural Properties in Tokyo. According to the restoration report, an unknown substance had been applied to the overall surface, adding a glossy finish, as well as some colors inconsistent with the original painting. These materials seem to correspond to a restoration work conducted in the Western countries, but this intervention does not appear neither in the museum records nor in other historical sources. The aim of this work is to determine the materials used in this restoration work of which very little is known and to understand why these new materials appear in a worse condition of preservation than some of the original ones. Preliminary, in situ , Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence analyses were performed, and right from the beginning, elements such as Cr, Ba, and Co appear in the spectra of orange, yellow, brown, and blue areas, accusing the anachronism of the used materials. Nineteen microsamples were collected to be analyzed with two different confocal Raman equipments using 514, 532, 638, and 785-nm laser sources. Interesting results were obtained for the blue decoration of one of the houses: whereas the energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrum showed the odd combination of Cr, Fe, Co, Cu, and Zn, the Raman spectra indicated mostly the use of Phthalocyanine blue. HARPSICHORD ,HARPSICHORDISTS ,RADIOGRAPHY ,FOURIER transform infrared spectroscopy - Abstract
This paper surveys a detailed characterization of a prestigious harpsichord brought into fashion in 1782 by Pascal Taskin. The implemented analytical methodology required the use of in situ Energy Dispersive X-Ray Fluorescence (EDXRF) for elemental analysis of the color palette, optical and SEM imaging (SE and BSE modes) for the layered structure identification, Scanning Electron Microscopy coupled with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) for elemental composition of the inorganic compounds, Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy for some binders and THM-GC/MS as well for resinous layers identification. By cross-checking these data with those obtained by digital radiography, it was concluded that a true ravalement of the harpsichord was in fact undertaken and that, among more than five interventions applied to the instrument until the present day, the third one may correspond to the one performed at Pascal Taskin's time. Tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) has experienced tremendous progress over the last two decades. Despite detecting single molecules and achieving sub-nanometer spatial resolution, attaining high TERS sensitivity is still a challenging task due to low reproducibility of tip fabrication, especially regarding very sharp tip apices. Here, we present an approach for achieving strong TERS sensitivity via a systematic study of the near-field enhancement properties in the so-called gap-mode TERS configurations using the combination of finite element method (FEM) simulations and TERS experiments. In the simulation study, a gold tip apex is fixed at 80 nm of diameter, and the substrate consists of 20 nm high gold nanodiscs with diameter varying from 5 nm to 120 nm placed on a flat extended gold substrate. The local electric field distributions are computed in the spectral range from 500 nm to 800 nm with the tip placed both at the center and the edge of the gold nanostructure. The model is then compared with the typical gap-mode TERS configuration, in which a tip of varying diameter from 2 nm to 160 nm is placed in the proximity of a gold thin film. Our simulations show that the tip-nanodisc combined system provides much improved TERS sensitivity compared to the conventional gap-mode TERS configuration. We find that for the same tip diameter, the spatial resolution achieved in the tip-nanodisc model is much better than that observed in the conventional gap-mode TERS, which requires a very sharp metal tip to achieve the same spatial resolution on an extended metal substrate. Finally, TERS experiments are conducted on gold nanodisc arrays using home-built gold tips to validate our simulation results. Our simulations provide a guide for designing and realization of both high-spatial resolution and strong TERS intensity in future TERS experiments.

The aim of this study was to characterise the nutritional status of community-dwelling older adults (≥ 65 years old) living in Portugal. Nutritional status was assessed by the 18-item Mini Nutritional Assessment (full MNA
® ), in which a lower score indicates worse nutritional status. The World Health Organisation's (WHO) BMI cut-offs for adults were followed (obesity: BMI ≥ 30Kg/m2 ). MNA and BMI categories estimates (95% CI) were obtained using Complex Samples analysis (SPSS® 24.0). Non-difference between sexes was analysed with Chi-square tests. Complete information was available for 1110 community-dwelling participants (mean age: 75.9 ± 8.1 years; 48.9% women; 71.4% attended school for < 5 years). According to the MNA, 0.5% (95%CI: 0.2–1.7) were classified as malnourished and 16.0% (12.9–19.7) were at risk of malnutrition. Following WHO's BMI criteria, 0.6% (0.2–1.5) had a BMI ≤ 18.5Kg/m2 , 41.9% (37.9–46.0) had a BMI between 25–30Kg/m2 , and 36.7% (32.8–40.9) presented a BMI ≥ 30Kg/m2 . The prevalence of risk of malnutrition was significantly higher for women (20.1%, 95%CI: 15.4–25.9) than men (10.4%, 7.6–14.1; p < 0.001). The prevalence of obesity was also significantly higher for women (42.2%, 35.9–48.7 versus 29.3%, 24.8–34.2; p = 0.007). Moreover, 13.9% (9.2–20.4) were simultaneously at risk of malnutrition and had a BMI ≥ 30Kg/m2 , while no one in this BMI category was classified as malnourished. Although appropriate BMI cut-offs for older adults are still uncertain, these results highlight that a high BMI does not exclude the risk of malnutrition, particularly in women. Therefore, health professionals should routinely screen for malnutrition using multi-component, validated screening tools, irrespective of the BMI. In fact, malnutrition is preventable if detected on time and effective interventions exist. The concomitant presence of malnutrition and obesity may pose additional challenges to the treatment. - Abstract
Production and consumption activities have determined a weakness of the sustainable real estate economy. The main topics of this Special Issue include the following: (i) building management, (ii) building costs, (iii) mass appraisal methods, (iv) econometric models, (v) real estate risk management, (vi) economic valuation of real estate investment projects, (vii) real estate market, (viii) social housing, (ix) urban economics, (x) land, (xi) transport economics, (xii) real estate economics and finance, (xiii) sustainable building transformations and economic effects on environment, (xiv) green buildings, (xv) resilient cities, (xvi) COVID-19 pandemic and (xvii) Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG). They attest the relevance of disseminating knowledge and innovations related to the most recent real estate evaluation methodologies applied in the fields of architecture and civil, building, territorial and environmental engineering and to the current tools to guide the sustainable urban planning decision-making processes. A delicate role in these complex problems is assigned to real estate appraisal activities, called to make value judgments on real estate goods and investment projects, the prices of which are often formed in atypical real estate markets, giving ever greater importance to sustainable development and transformation issues. The purpose of this study is to understand how future employees in the hospitality and tourism industry envision the use of artificial intelligence in the organizations where they wish to work in the future. Through open-ended questions applied to undergraduate and master's students in the area of tourism and hospitality, we capture their opinions when thinking about the partial or total use of robots in hospitality. Despite the increasing implementation of artificial intelligence in hospitality and tourism, existing research mainly focuses on current hoteliers and/or customers. However, anticipating how digital generations expect their future roles in a close engagement with robots allows researchers to predict and focus their attention on future problems. Their statements were subjected to a qualitative content analysis methodology, based on themes and sentiment. Participants expressed a negative view of the presence of robots in hospitality, mostly associated with a fear of job loss. Many also reported that interacting with robots is negative for both staff and customers due to robots' lack of emotions. However, there is some division concerning the impact of robots on service quality: some believe that the service will be more efficient and with fewer failures; others believe that the limitations of robots will lead to worse service. The findings suggest that the acceptability and desirability of robotization may vary depending on the level of robotization in hotels, on the type of customer, and on the level of service provided. OBESITY ,AQUAPORINS ,ADIPOSE tissues ,CELL membranes ,GLYCERIN ,MEMBRANE permeability (Biology) ,DIABETES - Abstract
Aquaporins (AQPs) are membrane water/glycerol channels that are involved in many physiological processes. Their primary function is to facilitate the bidirectional transfer of water and small solutes across biological membranes in response to osmotic gradients. Aquaglyceroporins, a subset of the AQP family, are the only mammalian proteins with the ability to permeate glycerol. For a long time, AQP7 has been the only aquaglyceroporin associated with the adipose tissue, which is the major source of circulating glycerol in response to the energy demand. AQP7 dysregulation was positively correlated with obesity onset and adipocyte glycerol permeation through AQP7 was appointed as a novel regulator of adipocyte metabolism and whole-body fat mass. Recently, AQP3, AQP9, AQP10 and AQP11 were additionally identified in human adipocytes and proposed as additional glycerol pathways in these cells. This review contextualizes the importance of aquaglyceroporins in adipose tissue biology and highlights aquaglyceroporins' unique structural features which are relevant for the design of effective therapeutic compounds. We also refer to the latest advances in the identification and characterization of novel aquaporin isoforms in adipose tissue. Finally, considerations on the actual progress of aquaporin research and its implications on obesity therapy are suggested. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Dissertação para obtenção do Grau de Mestre em Biotecnologia The brain derived neurotrophic factor holds neuroprotective and neurogenic roles. The presence of this factor is believed to present highly beneficial effects on injured cells within several neurological disorders, where the levels of this neurotrophin are usually drastically decreased. Neural stem cells are multipotent, self-renewing cells with the ability to differentiate into the three main type of cells within the central nervous system - neurons, astrocytes and oligodendrocytes. The combination of gene therapy, through the introduction of therapeutic genes into the desired cells, with cell therapy aiming for the replacement of damaged cells within a given disorder, hold great promise in modern regenerative medicine. The aim of this work was the overexpression of the brain derived neurotrophic factor in neural stem cells. For this, mouse and human neural stem cells were transfected with one of three non-viral techniques - microporation, lipid and cationic-polymer based strategies. Human NSC were efficiently transfected using the commercial lipid-based transfection reagent Lipofectamine 2000 with an efficiency of 35%, maintaining their differentiation potential. Cells within the differentiation process were efficiently transfected with 13% efficiency. Cell viability has always remained above 70% after the lipofection process. The transfection with the BDNF gene resulted in neurons with longer primary neurites, and more secondary neurites than control cells, which hints at the promotion of neurite outgrowth and ramification of neurons by this neurotrophin. Finally, healthy cells were exposed to toxic concentrations of glutamate. Conditioned media containing secreted BDNF from transfected cells was able to protect these cells from glutamate-induced neurotoxicity, as well as reducing the levels of expression of the pro-apoptotic protein caspase7 to near-control levels. Overall, this work provides the first evidences of the successful use of BDNF-overexpressing NSC, based on a non-viral gene delivery approach for decreasing neurotoxicity.

ARGON , *XENON , *QUASI-molecular ions - Abstract
The impact of a highly charged ion onto a solid gives rise to charge exchange between the ion and target atoms, so that a slow ion gets neutralized in the vicinity of the surface. Using highly charged Ar and Xe ions and the surface-only material graphene as a target, we show that the neutralization and deexcitation of the ions proceeds on a sub-10 fs time scale. We further demonstrate that a multiple Interatomic Coulombic Decay (ICD) model can describe the observed ultrafast deexcitation. Other deexcitation mechanisms involving nonradiative decay and quasimolecular orbital formation during the impact are not important, as follows from the comparison of our experimental data with the results of first-principles calculations. Our method also enables the estimation of ICD rates directly. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
This volume includes fourteen papers on the acquisition of Romance languages, eleven of which were presented at the Romance Turn 9, held in Bucharest in September 2018. The studies offer new insights into central issues in the literature, such as syntactic complexity in both typical and impaired language settings, intervention effects, the acquisition of phenomena which involve both syntactic parameters and an external interface, as well as cross-linguistic interference effects. They present novel longitudinal and experimental data on the first language acquisition and second language learning of French, Italian, European and Brazilian Portuguese, Romanian and Spanish. A unique feature of this volume is the focus on the interaction of language specific properties and of factors which are not specific to the faculty of language in the narrow sense, such as data processing, the nature of the input, discourse structure, computational load, sociolinguistic properties, and the development of Theory of Mind.

- Abstract
Since the discovery of Aquaporin-1 (AQP1) as a water channel, many studies have revealed the importance of aquaporins in mammalian physiology and pathophysiology as well as plant and microbial biology. The studies have also shown aquaporins as potential drug targets and targets for improving crop properties.Written by an international group of contributors at the forefront of the field, Aquaporins in Health and Disease: New Molecular Targets for Drug Discovery presents the latest research advances in aquaporins and other major intrinsic protein (MIP) channels. The first section of the book describes the general concepts of aquaporin channel function, genomic research, structure-function analysis of aquaporins and glycerol facilitators, and regulation by gating and trafficking, including yeast aquaporin regulation and function. The second section discusses the physiological and pathophysiological roles of aquaporins in humans and microbes. The final section covers the development of inhibitors of aquaporin function. The book's epilogue offers future perspectives and directions, mainly in the area of aquaporin-based diagnostics and therapeutics.Stimulating future research on this important protein family, this book facilitates a paradigm shift in the understanding and roles of aquaporin membrane proteins in all biological settings. It encourages scientists to develop novel approaches for the treatment of human diseases based on aquaporin function or dysfunction.

- Abstract
This contributed volume reviews the recent progress in our understanding of membrane transport in yeast including both Saccharomyces cerevisiae and non-conventional yeasts. The articles provide a summary of the key transport processes and put these in a systems biology context of cellular regulation, signal reception and homeostasis. After a general introduction, readers will find review articles covering the mechanisms and regulation of transport for various substrates ranging from diverse nutrients to cations, water and protons. These articles are complemented by a chapter on extremophilic yeast, a chapter on the mathematical modelling of ion transport and two chapters on the role of transport in pathogenic yeasts and antifungal drug resistance. Each article provides both a general overview of the main transport characteristics of a specific substrate or group of substrates and the unique details that only an expert working in the field is able to transmit to thereader. Researchers and students of the topic will find this book to be a useful resource for membrane transport in yeast collecting information in one complete volume, which is otherwise scattered across many papers. This might also be interesting for scientists investigating other species in order to compare transport mechanisms with known functions in yeast with the cells on which they work.

- Abstract
Urban planning on the five Lusophone African countries - Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, and Sao Tome and PrÃncipe - has so far been relatively overlooked in planning literature. Bringing together a team of leading scholars, this book fills the gap by providing an in-depth analysis of key issues in the history of urban planning and discussing the key challenges confronting contemporary urban planning in these countries. The book argues that urban planning is a non-neutral and non-value free kind of public action and, therefore, ideology, planning theories, urban models and the ideological role urban planning has played are some of the key issues addressed. For that reason, the practice of Urban Planning is also seen as the outcome of a complex interrelationship between structure and agency, with the role of key planers being examined in some of the chapters. The findings and insights presented by the contributing authors confirm previous research on urban planning in the colonial and postcolonial periods in Lusophone African countries and at the same time break fresh ground and offer additional insights as new evidence has been collected from archives and in fieldwork carried out by a new generation of researchers. In addition, it outlines possible directions for future research.
