We report on measurements of energetic particle modulations observed by the HI-SCALE instrument aboard the Ulysses Spacecraft that were associated with the only hydromagnetic wave event measured inside the Jovian magnetosphere by the Ulysses magnetometer investigation.

A statistical study has been made of the high-latitude impulsive events that were observed during the 1985-1986 South Pole Balloon Campaign. The events were selected by searching for unipolar pulses greater than or equal to 10 nT above background in the vertical component of the magnetic field on the ground and/or pedestal or 'W' shaped horizontal electric field perturbations greater than or equal to 10 mV/m in amplitude and accompanied by perturbations in the vertical electric field at balloon altitude. A main event list comprising 112 events was compiled from the 468 hours of data available. Three aspects of the events were examined: the solar wind conditions prior to the event, local time of observation, and intrinsic properties of the events. The local time distribution was obtained from the 112 entry main event list and was found to be nearly uniform across the dayside, with no midday gap. The event rate found using our low-amplitude selection criteria was 0.7 event/hr, comparable to expectations based on in situ studies of the magnetopause. A total of 42 events were found for which data were available from Interplanetary Monitoring Platform (IMP) 8. Of these events, 12 occurred when the Z(sub GSM) component (B(sub Z)) of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) was northward and 30 occurred when B(sub Z) was southward or fluctuating. Only three of the B(sub Z) northward cases and only five of the B(sub Z) southward cases were preceded by pressure pulses greater than 0.4 nPa in amplitude. Ten of the events were studied in detail by means of a model-fitting method discussed elsewhere. This method infers values of several parameters, including the total current flowing in a coaxial or monopole system and a two-dimensional dipole system. The intrinsic properties of the events showed that only approximately 10% of the total current contributed to momentum transfer to the high-latitude ionosphere, that the direction of the motion depended more on local time of observation than IMF B(sub y), and that events were usually several hundred kilometers in size. The observed B(sub z) control found in the 42 event list and the prevalence of coaxial current dominated events are inconsistent with the predictions of the pressure pulse model.

Ion phase densities of Neptune are presently ascertained at the first and second adiabatic invariants of charged-particle motion on the basis of an analysis of Voyager 2 measurements. The profiles thus obtained are interpreted as indicative of generally inward radial diffusion, with an energetic ion source near L = 10. Excellent agreement is obtained between inbound and outbound phase-space density profiles at the values of the invariants; this suggests approximately axisymmetric, quasi-stationary radiation belts. The inward diffusing power carried by energetic ions appears adequate for powering Neptune's aurora, if enough of the ions are lost to the Neptune atmosphere.

Reported here are statistical studied of interplanetary protons (about 0.5-1.5 MeV) as measured by the Voyager 2 spacecraft in the outer heliosphere between about 1 and 22 AU. The acceleration processes which produce the fluctuations in intensity of the protons throughout the interval studied are caused by solar flare-generated shock waves and corotating shock structures in the solar wind. It is found that the proton count rates can be represented by a lognormal distribution, independent of the phase of the solar cycle in which the measurements were made. Power spectra of the logarithm of the counts show that for frequencies in the range of about 0.02-0.5 cycles per day, the spectra can be characterized as about f exp -2. At lower frequencies, the spectra turn over and flatten. Over the entire frequency range studied, about 0.002-0.5 cycles per day, the spectra are therefore nonfractal. The rollover in the spectra at about 100 days probably represents the reorganization time for solar wind streams within the coronal source at the sun.

The power spectra of the wideband (10 Hz to 100 kHz) magnetic field signals in a number of lightning return strokes (primarily first return strokes) measured during a lightning storm which occurred in Lindau, West Germany in August, 1984 have been calculated. The RF magnetic field data were obtained with the engineering unit of the Galileo Jupiter Probe lightning experiment. The spectra of the magnetic field data definitely show fine structure, with two or three distinct peaks appearing in the spectra of many of the waveforms. An enhancement of power at frequencies of about 60-70 kHz is often seen in the spectra of the waveform time segments preceding and following the rise-to-peak amplitude of the return stroke.

A study of the transmission of magnetosheath hydromagnetic fluctuations with f of about 23 mHz and f of about 13 mHz through the magnetopause is reported. The study involves measurements of the fluctuations inside the magnetosphere on the ISEE-2 spacecraft near the equator and on the ground near the boundary flux tube connecting with the spacecraft. The magnetic energy of the fluctuations inside the magnetopause is about 1 percent of those in the magnetosheath. This ratio is consistent with that expected for the transmission of fast-mode waves through a magnetopause with a tangential discontinuity.

Voyager 1 and 2 observations of ions accelerated at corotating shocks within about 13-28 AU are discussed. The ion spectra extend smoothly from at least 30 keV to an energy above about 3 MeV. However, these spectra are falling steeply at the other end. The event-avaraged energy spectra during 1984 are similar for both Voyagers, and the event-averaged spectra at Voyager 2 are of similar form both before and after the flux decrease in early 1985. The event-averaged intensities of about 1 MeV protons exhibit an about -3 percent per degree gradient before and after the early 1985 intensity decrease. The significance of these observations for interpreting the shock acceleration is addressed.

The power spectra of the wide-band (10 Hz to 100 kHz) magnetic-field signals for a number of lightning return strokes measured during a thunderstorm which occurred in Lindau in August, 1984 have been calculated. Each return stroke data stream is passed through an adaptive filter designed to whiten its spectrum. The spectra of the magnetic field data definitely show fine structure, with two or three distinct peaks in the spectra of many of the waveforms. A peak at f of about 60-70 kHz is often seen in the power spectra of the waveform time segments preceding and following the rise-to-peak amplitude of the return stroke.

Measurements of the ion and electron fluxes in the Uranian magnetosphere made by the low-energy charged-particle (LECP) instrument on the Voyager 2 spacecraft are used to discuss possible particle-induced modifications of the moons and rings of Uranus. The energy spectra of the orbit-integrated particle dosages expected on the major moons are derived from the LECP measurements of particle intensities and pitch-angle distributions. Laboratory-derived results on charged-particle-induced chemical and physical modifications of H2O, CH4, CO, and CO2 ions are used. The erosion rates of water ice and the darkening of organic ices on the surfaces of the moons are estimated from the orbit-integrated fluxes. Significant darkening of fresh organic ices to depths of the order of 1 micron is expected to occur for times as short as a few thousand years. Darkening at deeper depths will occur at increasingly longer times. The implications of these results for the interpretation of remote-sensing data are discussed.

Proton and electron phase space density profiles are constructed from an analysis of Voyager 2 low-energy charged particle data from the magnetosphere of Uranus. The Uranus proton profiles reveal an approximately exponential decline with decreasing radius for L less than about 9 in a relatively dense thermal plasma region with intense plasma wave activity. Among the distributed loss mechanisms at Uranus are satellite sweeping, wave-particle interactions, and charge exchange of protons with an extended hydrogen corona.

The Low Energy Charged Particle (LECP) experiment on the Voyager 2 spacecraft in the outer heliosphere (greater than 10 AU) has observed several occasions when there was a peak in the interplanetary ion spectra for ions of energies of about 0.5-1.0 MeV. Such enhancements can last for several days, suggesting that at these times particles of these energies dominate the low energy cosmic population in this region of the heliosphere. Two specific cases are discussed. The enhancements seem to be associated with the passage of transient interplanetary shock events, with the ion anisotropies generally showing outflow. The most straight-forward explanation for the observations seems to involve only a propagation effect of ions from the inner to the outer solar system. This conclusion is supported by simple modeling of the propagation of an event observed at 1 AU to the spacecraft at about 12 AU.

The results of an analysis of the energetic particle and magnetic field data acquired by the Voyager 2 spacecraft at distances of about 40-70 Jupiter radii on the nightside of the planet are reported. As in a previous study of similar data at distances of greater than about 80 Jupiter radii, the energy densities of ions (primarily protons) is found to be sufficient to provide the diamagnetic depressions measured in the magnetic field intensity as the spacecraft made successive encounters with the nightside plasma sheet. There is some evidence that the percent contribution of the protons to the energy balance decreases with increasing distance from the planet over this radial interval, although this conclusion is dependent upon the assumption that the proton and heavier ion (oxygen) energy spectra are similar.

Voyager ion and electron data in the energy range 30-1000 keV as measured by the Low Energy Charged Particle experiment are reviewed to check suggestions based on star occultation data that there are additional tenuous rings of Saturn beyond 10 Saturn radii from that planet. In the Voyager data, there is no convincing evidence for such ring matter. Features in the charged particle fluxes in the regions in question are more readily explained by temporal variations and/or spatial structure unrelated to ring matter, such as the mantle on the dayside and/or detached plasma sheets.

Fluctuations in field strength and particle flux observed during the outbound pass of Voyager 2 through the Saturnian magnetosphere are discussed. The observations of injections of energetic electrons and ions, associated plasma wave activity, and magnetic field perturbations are described. These data imply the existence of an acceleration or heating site some distance from the Voyager 2. A correlation between impulsive injections of 0.35-2 MeV electrons, increase in the hot ion flux of 28-215 KeV, a dip in magnetic field magnitude, and a signal from the plasma wave instrument in the 562 Hz channel was detected. An explanation of these observations is provided.

Energetic particle observations in the outer heliosphere (approx 12 A. U.) by the LECP instruments on the Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 spacecraft are discussed that show a definite latitude dependence of the number and intensity of particle enhancements produced by corotating interplanetary regions during an interval when no solar energetic particle events were observed. The particle enhancements are fewer in number and less intense at higher (approx 20 deg.) heliolatitudes. However, the similar spectral shapes of the accelerated particles at the two spacecraft indicate that the acceleration process is the same at the two latitudes, but less intense at the higher latitude.

Plasma waves detected by the Voyager 1 and 2 spacecraft beyond about 12 AU that may be associated with the turbulence expected at the heliopause are interpreted in terms of the characteristics of the interplanetary medium at large heliocentric distances. The low-energy charged-particle environment in the outer heliosphere during the observations of the unusual plasma-wave signals is addressed. The particle data suggest that the outer heliosphere was unusually stable and free of transient shock and particle events for the roughly eight months during the wave observations.

The energy densities epsilon(P) of the low energy ions measured by the Low Energy Charged Particle experiment on Voyager 1 and 2 are compared to the magnetic field energy densities derived from the magnetometer instrument during the crossing of the dayside Saturn magnetopause. The ratios of the proton to magnetic field energy densities are greater than about 0.5 during the Voyager 2 crossing when the magnetopause was at about 18 R(s). During the Voyager 1 crossing of the magnetopause at about 23 R(s), the ratios were about 0.1, although they approached one as the spacecraft entered the region near 18 R(s). The observations show that the dayside Saturnian magnetopause can at times have high beta plasma conditions, similar to the situation found at Jupiter.

The possible production of a neutral-particle torus by magnetosphere-particle sputtering of the icy satellites (Enceladus, Tethys, Dione, Rhea) of Saturn is discussed. Particle spectra from the Voyager low-energy-charged-particle experiment are used together with laboratory-derived erosion rates and velocity distributions for the ejected species. An extended torus region in the inner magnetosphere of Saturn is expected, with H2O escape fluxes in the vicinities of the satellites varying from about 2 to 7 x 10 to the 7th mol/sq cm sec for incident protons and from about 6 to 14 x 10 to the 9th mol/sq cm sec if the incident ions are all oxygen.

The characteristics of the dayside bow shock, magnetopause, and outer magnetosphere are emphasized in the present consideration of low energy electrons and protons measured by the Low Energy Charged Particle Experiment during Voyager spacecraft encounters with Saturn. During several of the bow shock crossings, low energy protons were observed streaming from the magnetosphere's dawnside, and in the magnetosheath, the protons were observed to be primarily oriented with pitch angles of about 90 deg. Examination of proton flux distributions suggests that the magnetopause was moving inward with a lower limit speed of 10 km/sec during the Voyager 2 approach to the planet. Intervals of diamagnetic depression observed in the magnetic field energy density during the Voyager 2 encounter nearly coincide with enhancements in the low energy-proton energy density.

The interactions between Io and the Jovian particle population have been of considerable interest ever since the discovery that Io modulates Jupiter's decametric radiation. Voyager 1 observations established that a plasma torus around Io dominates the mass and energy budgets of the Jovian magnetosphere. This torus must then play a central role in the particle loss process around Io. The present investigation provides a picture for particle transport and energetic ion losses near Io's orbit which considers both low energy plasma data and energetic ion data. The approximate match between the energy needed to power the Jovian UV aurora and the 'missing' energy of the low energy charged particle (LECP) measured ions is consistent with the concept that significant precipitation of energetic ions into the Jovian atmosphere can maintain the Jovian aurora.

Magnetic field data from Voyager 1 magnetometer experiment are used with angular distribution data from the same spacecraft's low energy charged particle experiment to investigate the influences of Titan on the magnetosphere energetic particle distributions, with attention to the pitch angle distributions of ions and electrons. Titan appears to disrupt the corotation motion of the ions, since, while the fluxes of the ions in the corotation direction are of diminished intensity, those observed in the equatorial plane perpendicular to this direction are almost unaffected. The resulting distribution and trajectory modeling conclusions suggest that the convection electric field is absent in the wake of Titan, and that the presence of Titan produces a reduction in the fluxes of the electrons and flatter distributions with pitch angle.

Angular distributions are presented of ion (about 0.5-2 MeV) and electron (greater than 10 MeV) fluxes measured during the Voyager 1 spacecraft passage through the inner regions of the Jovian magnetosphere. In the regions of peak flux intensities, just outside the orbit of Io, the ion angular distributions are most sharply peaked at 90 deg local pitch angle, a configuration consistent with diffusion of the particles inward from large radial distances. Inside the orbit of Io the lower-energy ions exhibit angular distributions depleted at 90 deg local pitch angles, suggesting the possibility of charge-exchange scattering loss of these particles. In the vicinity of the Io flux tube, no significant effect is observed in the flux or pitch angle distributions of the ions. The relativistic electrons are depleted in the flux tube region and exhibit an asymmetrical pitch angle distribution, with more electrons appearing to arrive from the equatorial region (the direction of Io) than from the low-altitude mirror point.

A low-power portable data acquisition system presently in use for geomagnetic measurements is described. The system is composed of a data-processing system containing a low-power microprocessor, a 9-track digital tape recorder, and a rechargeable battery pack. The magnetometer is a low-power three axis fluxgate design. Under program control the data processing system keeps track of time of day and date, samples three analog magnetometer outputs at intervals of either 0.4 or 2 s, digitizes the data to 15-bit resolution, and, depending upon relative magnetic activity, decides upon data compression to increase the tape storage capacity. It also monitors and records internal voltages and provides self-checking functions which may be monitored through a visual readout on the control panel. The system is mounted in a rugged, weather-tight carrying case suitable for use outdoors with minimal protection. The system, including magnetometer, uses 1.6-W power and can store 5.7 Mbytes of data.
