In the variety of not necessarily associative rings, we show that the sixty Bol-Moufang identities determine exactly thirteen subvarieties, and we determine all inclusions and necessary counterexamples. We make use of the concepts of magma rings and linear identities. The result is analogous to the classification of varieties of loops or quasigroups of Bol-Moufang type (Phillips, Vojtěchovský-2005) and was motivated by the study of tangent algebras to smooth loops of Bol-Moufang type (Mal'cev-1955, Sagle-1961, Nagy-1992, Bremner, Madariaga-2014). The eruption of deeply sourced kimberlite magma offers the fastest route to bring deep-seated volatiles back to the Earth's surface. However, the viscosity of kimberlite magma, a factor governing its migration and eruption dynamics within Earth, remains poorly constrained. We conducted synchrotron in situ falling sphere viscometry experiments to examine kimberlite magma with different volatile contents (0 to 5 wt % H2O and 2 to 8 wt % CO2) under high pressure-temperature conditions. The results reveal that the viscosity of volatile-rich kimberlite magma is ~1 to 2 orders lower than that of mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB) and comparable to the ultramobile pure carbonate melt. Using the measured viscosity values, we simulated the ascent and eruption process of kimberlite magma. We found that a minimum content of ~0.5 wt % water in the primitive magma is necessary to allow the ultrafast eruption process of kimberlite, thereby enabling the preservation of diamonds and high-pressure mineral inclusions transported by the magma. The origin of magmatic microgranular enclaves has been investigated in the Mesoproterozoic granitoid Krasnopol intrusion (1.5 Ga), part of the AMCG (anorthosite–mangerite–charnockite–granite) Mazury Complex in the East European Craton (NE Poland). The granitoids are ferroan and metaluminous, and display the typical characteristics of A-type granites, with high contents of Zr, Nb, Ga and rare earth elements (REEs). The enclaves are metaluminous and have a broad compositional range with two groups distinguished: silica-poor (45–50 wt% SiO2) and silica-rich (54 to 59 wt% SiO2), the latter overlapping in composition with the granitoid samples. The silica-poor enclaves are enriched in REEs compared to the silica-rich type, while the silica-rich enclaves exhibit trace-element patterns similar to those of the granitoids. Initial whole rock εNd values range between -3.8 and -4.0 for the granitoids and give a slightly wider range from -2.6 to -3.8 for the enclaves. The 87Sr/86Sr initial values vary from 0.7084 to 0.7138 for the granitoids and between 0.7052 and 0.7075 for the enclaves and indicate that the granitoids and enclaves are not isotopically identical. These may suggest that the two magmatic systems represented by the granitoid host rock and the enclaves, were probably derived from different sources, but with sufficient interaction, which led to a progressive change in the composition of the enclaves towards intermediate composition. We suggest that the mafic melts of the enclaves were generated at the base of the thickened crust through partial melting of the lower crustal source, with a significant contribution from mantle material. In this study, laser ablation–multicollector–inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (LA–MC–ICP–MS) of apatites and LA–ICP–MS of zircons are used to collect U–Pb geochronological data, Rb–Sr isotope chronology is used to analyze alkaline feldspar and plagioclase, and archival apatite geochemistry data for the exposed Naitoushan basalt and Heishigou dike in the Changbaishan Tianchi volcano (CTV) are accessed to examine the petrogenesis and determine the origin of basaltic magmatism in the CTV. The Naitoushan basalt and Heishigou dike formed at 22.2–18.7 and 0.230–0.218 Ma, respectively. In situ oxides, volatiles, trace element geochemistry and Sr–Nd isotopes of apatite are reported for two samples. Most apatites are in the early crystallization phase and form inclusions in plagioclase that are euhedral or subhedral. They have higher MgO and K2O/Na2O concentrations; lower F and Cl concentrations; Ba, Sr, Nb, Ta, Zr, Hf, K, and Ti depletion; and Th, U, Ce, Pb, P, and Nd enrichment. All apatite samples are enriched in light rare earth elements (REEs) relative to heavy REEs and have relatively homogeneous Th/U, Zr/Hf, La/Sm, and Nd/Tb ratios and Sr–Nd isotopic compositions; thus, their host magmas potentially have the same magmatic origin as oceanic island basalt. The apatite La, Yb, and U contents, Eu/Eu* and La/Yb values, and high REE contents show a weak crystallization sequence in the mafic magma. This study demonstrates that the pre-shield and post-shield mafic magmas in the CTV were likely derived from an enriched mantle source with an I-type signature related to the rollback of the Pacific plate. Let F \in \mathbb {Z}[x_0, \ldots, x_n] be homogeneous of degree d and assume that F is not a 'nullform', i.e., there is an invariant I of forms of degree d in n+1 variables such that I(F) \neq 0. Equivalently, F is semistable in the sense of Geometric Invariant Theory. Minimizing F at a prime p means to produce T \in Mat(n+1, \mathbb {Z}) \cap GL(n+1, \mathbb {Q}) and e \in \mathbb {Z}_{\ge 0} such that F_1 = p^{-e} F([x_0, \ldots, x_n] \cdot T) has integral coefficients and v_p(I(F_1)) is minimal among all such F_1. Following Kollár [Electron. Res. Announc. Amer. Math. Soc. 3 (1997), pp. 17–27], the minimization process can be described in terms of applying weight vectors w \in \mathbb {Z}_{\ge 0}^{n+1} to F. We show that for any dimension n and degree d, there is a complete set of weight vectors consisting of [0,w_1,w_2,\dots,w_n] with 0 \le w_1 \le w_2 \le \dots \le w_n \le 2 n d^{n-1}. When n = 2, we improve the bound to d. This answers a question raised by Kollár. These results are valid in a more general context, replacing \mathbb {Z} and p by a PID R and a prime element of R. Based on this result and a further study of the minimization process in the planar case n = 2, we devise an efficient minimization algorithm for ternary forms (equivalently, plane curves) of arbitrary degree d. This work presents new data on the Sm–Nd age of the Ishlya (1470 ± 62 Ma) and Misaelga (1481 ± 58 Ma) mafic/ultramafic complexes distributed along the western slope of the Southern Urals. The ages obtained are close to the Calymmian–Ectasian boundary (~1400 Ma) of the International Chronostratigraphic Scale. Based on calculated data, it is shown that the area of magma generation for the melts that formed the named complexes has been located in the "head" of a plume, which is the primary cause of the Mashak "magmatic event" in the Southern Urals. Nakhlites (clinopyroxene-rich cumulates) and chassignites (dunites) are two types of meteorites that were emplaced onto — and subsequently ejected from— the surface of Mars together, but their petrogenetic history has been difficult to discern. We studied the primary magmatic history preserved in zoning patterns of cumulus phases from a suite of nakhlites and chassignites. Samples studied include nakhlites Northwest Africa (NWA) 11013, NWA 10645, Governador Valadares, Caleta el Cobre 022, Nakhla, Miller Range 090032, and NWA 817, as well as chassignites NWA 2737 and Chassigny. In nakhlite and chassignite olivine, phosphorous (P) preserves primary magmatic signatures, and P 2 O 5 ranges from ∼<0.01–0.21 wt %; in nakhlite pyroxene, chromium (Cr) zoning corresponds to Cr 2 O 3 abundances between ∼0.03 and 0.36 wt %. We find that nakhlite pyroxene cores uniformly formed rapidly for a time at high crustal pressures, and then slowly at near-equilibrium under lower crustal pressures. Pyroxene in the nakhlites were then stored through multiple injections of magma prior to remobilization, eruption, and final crystallization. Nakhlite olivine cores are morphologically heterogenous throughout the suite, but all record rapid initial crystallization prior to equilibrium formation, followed by resorption in changing magma compositions. Both olivine and pyroxene in the nakhlites are antecrysts, as they initially formed in a different magma than that in which they erupted. Chassignites underwent very rapid initial undercooling, and record later changes in magma conditions, resulting in thin elemental oscillatory zoning patterns in olivine grains. Together, the cumulus phases of the nakhlite and chassignite suite, combined with petrological evidence from martian shergottite meteorites, suggest that significant magmatic undercooling is the rule rather than the exception for martian magmatic systems. This may relate to the stalling of magmas within the thicker crust of Mars, fostering crystal storage with significant temperature differences between injected magmas and crystal mushes. The petrogenesis of extremely fractionated igneous rocks is closely linked to the evolution of the continental crust and the formation of rare metal mineralization. Extremely fractionated magmas evolve via fractional crystallization, hydrothermal evolution, and volatile-rich fluid–melt interaction, but the specific effects of these magmatic and magmatic–hydrothermal processes remain unclear. To understand the mechanisms by which extremely fractionated granitic magmas evolve, we characterized the geochemical and Fe isotope signatures of a suite of granites and pegmatites from the Baishitouquan (BST) granitic pluton in northwest China. The BST granitic system evolved from a high SiO 2 and volatile-poor system to a low SiO 2 and volatile-rich system as it transitioned from an evolutionary stage dominated by magmatic processes to one dominated by magmatic–hydrothermal processes. This transition is supported by changes in the degree of melt polymerization (NBO/T) and other geochemical indicators of fluid activity (e.g., TE 1,3 (REE tetrad effect), Zr/Hf, Nb/Ta, and F/Cl ratios), suggesting that extremely fractionated granites form as a result of a combination of fractional crystallization and volatile-rich fluid–melt interactions. The bulk-rock samples of the BST pluton exhibit significant Fe isotope variability, with δ56Fe values ranging from 0.40 ± 0.02‰ in the least evolved leucogranite (Zone-a) to 0.65 ± 0.02‰ in the most evolved topaz albite granite (Zone-e). Notably, the increase in bulk-rock δ56Fe values during magma evolution is accompanied by a decrease in SiO 2 contents, which is opposite to the general trend during granitic magma evolution. Given the correlations between δ56Fe values and indicators of magmatic differentiation (e.g., Fe 2 O 3T , Rb, (Na + K)/(Mg + Ca), and (La/Lu) N), the variability in bulk-rock Fe isotope composition of granites is likely due to changes in magma composition, with garnet removal being the most likely mechanism fractionating Fe isotopes. Rhyolite-MELTS modeling, coupled with geochemical and petrographic characterization, indicate that the high concentrations of F and H 2 O in felsic magmas likely play critical roles in structurally modifying granitic melts by dramatically reducing their viscosity and enhancing fluid flow. The distinct geochemical–isotopic features of granites can, therefore, be used as tracers for identifying magmatic–hydrothermal processes and, potentially, rare metal mineralization. In volcanic belts, magma influx into magma chambers generates excess pressure, amplifying the initial stress field to cause crustal deformation with significant ground displacements, which manifests in topographic relief. Quantifying such volcano-driven ground surface displacements is a fundamental requirement to embark on a criticality analysis of volcanotectonic events and associated hazard monitoring strategies. This study theoretically examines the underlying dynamics of surface displacements in a volcanic plumbing system comprising multiple magma chambers. The classical Mogi equation is extended to derive a set of analytical solutions to evaluate surface displacements as a function of separations between two off-axis chambers, measured along both horizontal and vertical directions. The resulting surface displacement plots, from the analytical solutions are compared with those calculated from a set of finite element (FE) model simulations run with the same parameters considered for the analytical formulations. Both the analytical and FE results suggest that horizontal (Sh) and vertical (Sv) separations of magma chambers largely control the vertical (Uz) and lateral (Ur) ground-displacement components. Spatially varying Uz attains its peak value at a specific location above the chambers, but increasing horizontal separation (Sh ~ 10 km) transforms the single-peak Uz pattern to a weakly developed double-peak Uz pattern, which eventually give way to two prominent high-amplitude peaks above the chambers when Sh ~ 25 km. Similarly, a large vertical separation (Sv ~ 6 km) yields double peaks in the Uz profile, which merge to form a single peak for small Sv (~ 1.5 km). The FE model results are used to map the stress fields around the two magma chambers to show that inter-chamber mechanical interaction can influence the deformation behaviour around the chambers, depending on Sh and Sv magnitudes. Early Paleozoic A-type granites in South China are rare, and their petrogenesis is still highly debated. This study focuses on the controversial Epo pluton in the Wuyi-Yunkai Orogen and conducts petrological and petrogeochemical research to discuss its origin. The Epo granites were emplaced at approximately 414 Ma and exhibit petrological and geochemical features of A-type granites. They contain only one ferromagnesian mineral, ferrum biotite. The granites mostly have high alkalis contents (Na2O + K2O = 6.48–8.85 wt.%), high field strength element (HFSE) contents (Zr + Nb + Ce + Y = 353–461 ppm), and high Ga/Al (104×Ga/Al = 2.50–3.72) and FeOT/(FeOT + MgO) (0.74–0.85) ratios. Besides, they formed under high-temperature (>850°C) and low-pressure (≤5 kbar) conditions. Their high A/CNK (average 1.20) and Eu/Eu* (average 0.46) values as well as Sr (average 128 ppm) and Ba (average 628 ppm) contents but relatively low Zr contents (approximately 200 ppm) further suggest a strongly peraluminous A-type affinity, a distinctive subtype of A-type granites. The Epo granites display enriched Sr-Nd-Hf isotope compositions with a whole-rock87Sr/86Sri average ratio of 0.712, whole-rock εNd(t) values ranging from − 8.9 to − 7.6, and zircon εHf(t) values clustering at − 8. Their two-stage Nd and Hf isotope model ages are 1.7 Ga to 2.0 Ga, suggesting ancient crustal sources. Furthermore, Nb/U (average 7.46), Ce/Pb (average 4.06) and other trace element ratios indicate negligible contributions from juvenile mantle materials. Our data on the Epo pluton, coupled with other contemporary A-type granites in South China, suggest that the high-temperature melting of metasedimentary basements generated strongly peraluminous A-type granites, while the involvement of metaigneous rocks or mantle-derived magmas resulted in metaluminous to weakly peraluminous A-type granites. Source diversity leads to different aluminium saturations. We consider 2-designs which admit a group of automorphisms that is flag-transitive and leaves invariant a chain of nontrivial point-partitions. We build on our recent work on 2-designs which are block-transitive but not necessarily flag-transitive. In particular we use the concept of the "array" of a point subset with respect to the chain of point-partitions; the array describes the distribution of the points in the subset among the classes of each partition. We obtain necessary and sufficient conditions on the array in order for the subset to be a block of such a design. By explicit construction we show that for any s ≥ 2 , there are infinitely many 2-designs admitting a flag-transitive group that preserves an invariant chain of point-partitions of length s. Moreover an exhaustive computer search, using Magma, seeking designs with e 1 e 2 e 3 points (where each e i ≤ 50 ) and a partition chain of length s = 3 , produced 57 such flag-transitive designs, among which only three designs arise from our construction—so there is still much to learn. Modelling magma transport requires robust numerical schemes for chemical advection. Current numerical schemes vary in their ability to be mass conservative, computationally efficient, and accurate. This study compares four of the most commonly used numerical schemes for advection: an upwind scheme, a weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO-5) scheme, a semi-Lagrangian (SL) scheme, and a marker-in-cell (MIC) method. The behaviour of these schemes is assessed using the passive advection of two different magmatic compositions. This is coupled in 2D with the temporal evolution of a melt anomaly that generates porosity waves. All algorithms, except the upwind scheme, are able to predict the melt composition with reasonable accuracy, but none of them is fully mass conservative. However, the WENO-5 scheme shows the best mass conservation. In terms of total running time and when multithreaded, the upwind, SL, and WENO-5 schemes show similar performance, while the MIC scheme is the slowest due to reseeding and removal of markers. The WENO-5 scheme has a reasonable total run time, has the best mass conservation, is easily parallelisable, and is therefore best suited for this problem. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Sakarya Zone (northern Turkey) is characterized by the emplacement of voluminous granitoids during the late Carboniferous. In this study, we present geological, U-Pb zircon age, elemental abundance and Sr-Nd-Pb isotopic data on two highly evolved Carboniferous granite bodies within the Early to Late Jurassic volcaniclastic rocks in the Şiran region. The largest body forms a roughly E-W trending ~30 km long and 0.5–2.5 km wide stripe the southern boundary of which is a southvergent thrust, and the other one a subcircular outcrop, ~5 by ~3 km, unconformably overlain by Lower Jurassic volcaniclastic rocks. Their emplacement ages are constrained by LA-ICP-MS U-Pb zircon dating to 310–313 ± 7 Ma (2σ, late Carboniferous). The granitic rocks consist of quartz, microperthitic K-feldspar, plagioclase, and minor biotite, and are characterized by highly evolved compositions with high concentrations of SiO2, Na2O, K2O and Ba, and low concentrations of TiO2, Fe2O3*, MgO, CaO, P2O5 and Sr. Geochemical characteristics indicate a highly fractionated high-K calc-alkaline peraluminous I-type affinity. Chondrite-normalized rare-earth element (REE) patterns are slightly fractionated, with light REEs enriched with respect to middle and heavy ones, and showing variable negative Eu anomalies. On the N-MORB-normalized multi-element variation diagrams, samples display negative anomalies of Ba, Nb, Sr, P, Zr, Eu, and Ti, and positive anomalies of K, and Pb. Initial 87Sr/86Sr and εNd values are 0.70432–0.70610 and −6 to −11, respectively, similar to other Carboniferous high-K calc-alkaline granites and mafic-ultramafic intrusions in the region. The compositional characteristics of the Şiran granites can be explained mainly by fractional crystallization involving hornblende, plagioclase, and biotite and without the involvement of significant amounts of garnet. There is no need to invoke magma mixing and/or melting of a heterogeneous source to account for the geochemical variation. We propose that the late Carboniferous granites formed by remelting of middle- to high-K calc-alkaline mafic rocks at lower crustal depths, followed by extensive fractionation at the upper crustal depths. A thorough review of data from the literature reveals that highly fractionated granites constitute a significant component of the late Carboniferous granites in the Eastern Pontides. Dykes are one of the primary subvolcanic bodies that transport magma from the shallow magma chamber or from the deep-seated magma reservoir. The mechanism of magma transport and emplacement in dyke swarms can contribute precious details on source and how magma has associated with crustal rocks. Here we are presenting the results obtained from the Anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) on their mode of emplacement and to understand magma flow direction. AMS and rock magnetic studies were performed on 33 dykes located on the West coast of Maharashtra, (India) to determine the magma flow direction using magnetic fabric. Thermomagnetic curves and hysteresis loop measurement indicates that titanomagnetite of associated pseudo-single-domain/multi-domain grain sizes are responsible for the magnetic fabrics. Based on the clustering of the principal AMS axes, three types of AMS fabrics were recognized, (i) Normal fabric, interpreted as due to magma flow characterised by clustering of K1–K2 axes on the dyke plane and K3 axes are nearly perpendicular to it, (ii) Inverse fabric with K2–K3 plane parallel to the dyke plane and K3 is perpendicular to it and (iii) Intermediate fabric, with K1–K3 axes clustering close to dyke plane. The inclination of the K1 axis (IK1) of Normal fabric is the most important to determine the flow of magma for the studied dyke swarm. The IK1 of the studied dykes were fed dominantly by horizontal (IK1 < 30°), inclined (30° < IK1 < 60°) up to vertical fluxes (IK1 > 60°). These results suggest that the dykes may be closer to the magma source and horizontal magma flow inferred from the dykes reveals source is located further away. Many epithermal gold and gold-rich porphyry-type ore deposits are associated with potassic magmas. Hence, potassic magmas are commonly assumed to have been unusually Au-rich or to have contained high Au/Cu ratios. However, these hypotheses remain poorly tested. Here, we report Au concentrations and Au/Cu ratios in silicate melt inclusions analyzed in potassic rocks worldwide. The results suggest that mafic potassic magmas generally contain only 2‒7 ng/g Au, despite common sulfide exhaustion during partial mantle melting. Both the absolute Au concentrations and Au/Cu ratios are comparable to those of mafic calc-alkaline magmas, and they vary little during subsequent magma differentiation because magmatic sulfide precipitation is strongly dominated by monosulfide solid solution that is relatively poor in Au and Cu. We thus suggest that the close association of Au-rich deposits with potassic magmas is not due to Au enrichment in the magma, but rather due to selective Au precipitation at the hydrothermal stage. High gold concentrations in ore deposits associated with potassic magmas are likely due to selective precipitation of gold during hydrothermal processes, according to low gold concentrations measured during in-situ analyses of melt inclusions. The Early Paleozoic tectonic setting and geological processes of the South China Block have long been a subject of debate. This study presented zircon U-Pb geochronology and Hf isotope, and whole-rock geochemical analyses for the Early Paleozoic granitoids in the Baoshan deposit of the Dayaoshan Uplift. LA-ICP-MS zircon U-Pb results suggest that the diorites, granite porphyries, granodiorites and its mafic microgranular enclaves in the Baoshan deposit formed at 449-430 Ma. Their formation ages are consistent with those of granite, MMEs and mafic rocks found in the Dayaoshan region. The granite porphyries, granodiorites, diorites and their MMEs in the Baoshan deposit have high Eu/Eu*ratios, low Zr + Nb + Y + Ce contents, 10,000xGa/Al values, and A/CNK ratios (0.74-1.08), belonging to metaluminous to weakly peraluminous calc-alkaline I-type granitoids. Based on zircon Hf isotopic compositions (eHf(t) from -5.5 to +3.1), it is unlikely that these rocks were solely originated from a crustal source, and mantle-derived magma also played a significant role in the formation of these intrusive rocks. It is inferred that the granitoids in the Baoshan deposit were probably formed through the underplating of mantlederived magmas during a transitional collision to extension tectonic setting, which led to the remelting of Mesoproterozoic crust. Paleolatitudes of volcanic rocks reveal that prominent changes in volcanic trend of the Hawaii-Emperor hotspot chain represent meridional migration of the magma source. However, models assuming latitudinal plume migration fail to explain the observed age distribution, rock composition, and erratic paleolatitude changes of the oldest Emperor seamounts. Here we use data-assimilation models to better reproduce the Hawaii-Emperor hotspot track by systematically considering plate reconstruction, plume-lithosphere interaction, and simplified melt generation and migration. Our results show that plate drag and plume-ridge interaction are both important in explaining the observed seamount ages. These shallow dynamic processes could account for 50% of the observed paleolatitude's secular reduction and erratic variations over time, where the necessary southward migration of the Hawaiian plume root is significantly less than previously thought. We conclude that plume-lithosphere interaction represents a common mechanism in affecting hotspot track, and has important implications in understanding mantle dynamics and plate reference frames. Plume-ridge interaction modulates plume-lithosphere interaction and leads to hotspot track deviations and paleolatitude offsets in multiple hotspot chains, according to 3D data assimilation models focused on the Hawaii-Emperor hotspot track. The studies are focused in the Mara–Kamenka–Uvat interfluve of the Biryusa Uplift of the basement of the Siberian Platform, where the Mara paleovolcano was recognized during the prospecting works for manganese more than 50 years ago. The specific volcano-sedimentary rocks are considered in the structure of the Late Riphean Karagas Group. Our mineralogical and petrographic studies allowed us to establish abundant high-K pyroclastic rocks, ignimbrites, and trachybasalts, which indicate a subaerial explosive character of the Mara volcano. The age of high-K volcanism of 640 Ma is based on U–Th–Pb dating of zircon. The Lu–Hf isotope systematics of zircon indicates a link of volcanism with mantle magmas. The composition and the period of the formation of rocks prevent their correlation (as was considered before) with sedimentary Late Riphean quartz and quartz–feldspar sandstones of the Karagas Group and dolerites of the Nersa intrusive complex. The East African Rift System (EARS) provides an opportunity to constrain the relationship between magmatism and plate thinning. During continental rifting, magmatism is often considered a derivative of strain accommodation—as the continental plate thins, decompression melting of the upper mantle occurs. The Turkana Depression preserves among the most extensive Cenozoic magmatic record in the rift. This magmatic record, which comprises distinct basaltic pulses followed by periods of relative magmatic quiescence, is perplexing given the lack of evidence for temporal heterogeneity in the thermo‐chemical state of the upper mantle, the nonexistence of lithospheric delamination related fast‐wave speed anomalies in the upper mantle, and the absence of evidence for sudden, accelerated divergence of Nubia and Somalia. We focus on the Pliocene Gombe Stratoid Series and show how lithospheric thinning may result in pulsed magma generation from a plume‐influenced mantle. By solving the 1D advection‐diffusion equation using rates of plate thinning broadly equivalent to those measured geodetically today we show that despite elevated mantle potential temperature, melt generation may not occur and thereby result in extended intervals of quiescence. By contrast, an increase in the rate of plate thinning can generate magma volumes that are on the order of that estimated for the parental magma of the Gombe Stratoid Series. The coincidence of large‐volume stratiform basalt events within the East African Rift shortly before the development of axial zones of tectonic‐magmatic activity suggests that the plate thinning needed to form these stratiform basalts may herald the onset of the localization of strain. The elemental and isotopic properties of garnet pyroxenites can yield information on lithospheric mantle composition, thermal state, and evolution. The 34Ma Kakanui Mineral Breccia in New Zealand contains spectacular but little-studied mantle peridotite and pyroxenite xenoliths that yield new insights into the evolution of a portion of the underlying mantle lithosphere of a former Gondwana margin. The moderately depleted and metasomatized spinel peridotites, as judged from spinel and olivine compositions and bulk rock major and platinum group element abundances, give mineral equilibration temperatures <1020°C and are derived from the middle to shallow (~35 to 50 km) lithospheric mantle when projected onto a 70 mW∙m−2 geotherm. These residues have low Re/Os and Re-depletion 187Os/188Os model ages that range from Eocene (0.05 Ga) to Paleoproterozoic (1.9 Ga), consistent with extraction from a lithospheric mantle comprising fragments with complex depletion histories. Although the peridotites have restricted δ18O (olivine +5.2 to 6.2), evidence for an isotopically heterogeneous mantle column in addition to the 187Os/188Os is seen in clinopyroxene 87Sr/86Sr (0.70244 to 0.70292), εNd (+4.1 to 18.8), 206Pb/204Pb (17.8 to 20.3), and εHf (+10 to +101). Higher metamorphic equilibrium temperatures of the garnet pyroxenites (Fe–Mg exchange of >1150°C) compared to the peridotites indicate their Eocene extraction was from towards the base of this isotopically heterogeneous mantle lithosphere. Pyroxenite bulk compositions point to cumulate origins, and the mineral isotope ratios of 87Sr/86Sr (0.70282 to 0.70294), εNd (+5.5 to 8.0) and 206Pb/204Pb (18.1 to 19.3) match many of the Zealandia metasomatized mantle peridotite xenoliths as well as the primitive intraplate basalts but not the garnet pyroxenite host magmas. In contrast to many global pyroxenite studies, the garnet pyroxenite 87Sr/86Sr and δ18O (+5.2 to 5.8) data provide no evidence for subducted crustal material in the primary magma source region, and Sm–Nd and Lu–Hf isotope data yield mid-Cenozoic ages that are probably related to isotope closure during eruption. An exception is one sample that yields a Lu–Hf isochron age of 111.9 ± 9.1 Ma, which corresponds to the convergence of the Lu–Hf isotope evolution curves of three other samples. Liquids calculated to have been in equilibrium with these cumulates have trace element compositions comparable to primitive alkaline intraplate basalts like those found at the surface of Zealandia. The new data, therefore, indicate that a pulse of intraplate magmatism occurred during or directly after the cessation of long-lived subduction on the former Zealandia Early Cretaceous forearc Gondwana margin, despite any volcanic surface exposure having been long eroded away. The lower lithospheric mantle emplacement of the garnet pyroxenites suggests that the source of the alkaline parent magmas was probably the convecting mantle, which supports conclusions that intraplate magmas in Zealandia have asthenospheric and lithospheric mantle sources. The reconstruction of the Early Paleozoic collision metamorphism of the Khan-Khukhei Block (Northern Mongolia) based on 3D modeling of thermal state of the crust and isotope dating is presented. The age of garnet–biotite schist from a metamorphic complex of the Khan-Khukhei Block of 517.4 ± 7.4 Ma is determined for the first time. 3D modeling was conducted to compare this age of metamorphism with the available age determinations of (post-) collision granite formation in the range of 513‒505 Ma. The model considers radiogenic heating at an elevated heat production of rocks of the thickened crust of the Khan-Khukhei block as the cause of the migmatization and granitoid melts formation. 3D modeling was conducted for the first time for thermal-dome type of metamorphism. The results provide a realistic conception of magma generation in typical collision settings in the absence of mantle magmatic heat sources. The development of sector zoning in clinopyroxene is attributed to the influence of crystallisation kinetics imposed by magma undercooling (ΔT) and may reflect variations in magma cooling histories. Yet, the degree of compositional variations between sectors has not been explored as a potential recorder of crystallisation dynamics. Here, we investigate the distribution of major, minor, and trace elements between hourglass {−1 1 1} and prism { h k 0} sectors in clinopyroxene with distinct pre-eruptive histories at Mt. Etna, Italy. We analyse sector-zoned clinopyroxene crystals ranging in size from sub-mm to cm (i.e., microphenocrysts, phenocrysts, and megacrysts), from eruptions fed by the central conduits of the volcano (1669 and 2002–03 flank eruptions) and eruptions fed by eccentric dykes which bypass the central conduits, tapping deeper magma storage regions (1974 and 2002–03 flank eruptions). We focus on Cr-rich mantle zones, which crystallised upon eruption triggering mafic rejuvenation and are ubiquitous across our sample set. With decreasing crystal size (i.e., increasing ΔT), tetrahedral aluminium is more strongly partitioned between prism and hourglass sectors. This promotes the uptake of rare earth elements (REE) and high field strength elements (HFSE) into prism relative to hourglass sectors. Combining relative degrees of sector enrichment with ΔT estimates, we propose magma recharge, mush remobilisation and the onset of magma ascent imposed slightly higher ΔT in 1974 than in 2002–03 eruptions at Mt. Etna. Enhanced ΔT in 1974 could be related to vigorous mixing and rapid transport of magma with limited storage, resulting in crystals of smaller sizes. Crystal size populations vary across eruptions, but crystals within a given population (e.g., phenocrysts) return similar calculated ΔT and REE + HFSE sector enrichments, implying connectivity between magmatic environments in the mush system. We show that the magnitude of sector zoning in clinopyroxene can be employed to explore subtle differences in pre-eruptive dynamics in volcanic systems. As an example, we explore sector enrichment in clinopyroxene phenocrysts from the 2021 eruption at La Palma (Canary Islands) and megacrysts from Roman era activity at Stromboli (Italy). Results highlight the role of dynamic mixing and mush remobilisation before eruption in mafic alkaline settings and suggest changes in magma composition across alkaline systems influence clinopyroxene chemistry but do not influence sector enrichment. Noble gases record in their radiogenic/non-radiogenic isotope ratios the traces of accretion history and degassing events from the early Earth, including giant impacts and the magma ocean stage, to large-scale recent volcanism. The diffusional behavior of noble gases in silicate magmas is one of the essential parameters needed to correctly model devolatilization from the magma ocean and subsequent volcanic eruptions. Here, we study the diffusivity of He, Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe in molten pyrolite using ab initio molecular dynamics. We find that the diffusivity of the noble gases decreases with increasing atomic size. The diffusion of Ar is comparable to that of Mg. We compute the partial molar volumes and find that at high pressure, He is almost one order of magnitude more compressible than the heavier noble gases. The analysis of the speciation of the noble gases in the melt indicates that the lifetime of the coordination polyhedra formed with O is not sensitive to the mass of the noble gases. Finally, we compute the electron localization function along the Xe–O interatomic vectors and show that there is no chemical bonding between the Xe and surrounding O atoms from the hosting silicate melt. Late Carboniferous–Early Permian granitoids are widespread in the Tianshan area and their tectonic setting is controversially discussed. Our research presents fresh whole-rock geochemical and Pb isotopic data, along with zircon U-Pb ages and Hf isotopic data for representative monzonitic and granitic intrusions in the Kumishi area. The aim is to decipher their magma sources and illuminate their geodynamic evolution. Zircon U-Pb dating results reveal that biotite monzonites in the Central Tianshan Belt were emplaced at 312.7 ± 2.9 Ma, while the quartz-monzonites and syenogranites in the South Tianshan Belt were formed at 284.5 ± 2.4 Ma and 283.4 ± 3.9 Ma, respectively. The biotite monzonites generally exhibit metaluminous and high-K calc-alkaline characteristics. They have a positive εHf(t) value (+4.9–+14.1), and are enriched in LREEs and LILEs but depleted in HREEs and HFSEs. These characteristics indicate that they were derived from a mixed magma source of the lower crust and the input of components derived from the mantle wedge above the subduction zone. The quartz-monzonites and syenogranites are high-K calc-alkaline to shoshonitic I-type granites, with εHf(t) values of +14.9–+15.5 and +6.6–+14.9, respectively. They are enriched in LREEs but depleted in HFSEs (e.g., Nb, Ta, and Ti), displaying relatively flat HREE patterns and negative Eu anomalies. The genesis of these rocks is attributed to a partial melting of the lower crust in which mantle-derived magmas participated, which was triggered by an upwelling asthenosphere in a post-collisional extensional geodynamic setting. These granitoids, together with regional analysis of other magmatism in the study area, suggest that the Kumishi area has experienced an evolution from subduction to post-collision from the Late Carboniferous to the Early Permian, which constrains the local closure of the Paleo-Asian Ocean. The Neoproterozoic granitic rocks of Mount Abu Kibash and Tulayah in the central Eastern Desert of Egypt are of geodynamic interest and provide us with important information about the evolution and growth of the northern part of the Arabian–Nubian Shield (ANS) continental crust. They are primarily composed of granodiorites and syenogranites based on new field, mineralogical, and geochemical analyses. The granodiorites are marked by an enrichment of LILEs such as Sr, K, Rb, Ba compared to HFSEs like Nb, Ta, Ti and show a higher concentration of LREEs relative to HREEs. This composition suggests a subduction-related setting and aligns with the characteristics of subducted I-type granites in the ANS. Chemistry of the analyzed primary amphiboles in the investigated granodiorites support a calc-alkaline nature, mixed source and subduction-related setting. The granodiorites represent an early magmatic phase in this setting, likely formed from a mix of mantle-derived mafic magmas and lower crust material, with subsequent fractional crystallization. On the other hand, syenogranites exhibit high SiO2 (72.02–74.02 wt%), total alkali (7.82–8.01 wt%), and Al2O3 (13.79–14.25 wt%) levels, suggesting their derivation from peraluminous (A/CNK > 1) parental magmas. Their REE-normalized patterns are flat with a pronounced negative Eu anomaly, typical of post-collisional A2-type granites worldwide. These rocks originated from the partial melting of a juvenile lower crustal source (tonalite) in a post-collisional setting, driven by lithospheric delamination that facilitated mantle upwelling and underplating to the lower crust. Interaction between the upwelled mantle and lower crust led to fertilization (enrichment with HFSE and alkalis) of the lithosphere before partial melting. Fractional crystallization coupled with less considerable crustal assimilation are the main magmatic processes during the evolution of these rocks. The transition from subduction to post-collisional setting was accompanied by crustal uplifting, thickening and extensional collapse of ANS continental crust that caused emplacement of large masses of A-type granites in the northern ANS. Rare amphibolite in the New Jersey Highlands containing plagioclase megacrysts ≤13 cm long forms bodies 0.5 to 2 m thick that preserve a penetrative metamorphic fabric and have sharp, conformable contacts against Mesoproterozoic country rocks. The megacrystic amphibolites were emplaced as thin dikes along extensional faults between 1160 and 1130 Ma. Amphibolites contain weakly zoned, subhedral andesine megacrysts (An29–44) in a matrix of plagioclase (An18–38), magnesio-hastingsite, biotite, diopside, Fe-Ti oxides, and apatite. The whole-rock major oxide composition of the megacrystic amphibolite matrix has high TiO2 (2.07 wt.% ± 2.0%), Al2O3 (17.03 wt.% ± 0.87%), and Fe2O3t (12.84 wt.% ± 3.2%) that represents an Al-Fe-rich mafic magma type that is characteristic of anorthosite associations globally. The whole-rock, rare earth element (REE) composition of the megacrystic amphibolite matrix is characterized by enrichments in light rare earth elements (LREEs) (La/YbN = 1.73–10.69) relative to middle (MREEs) and heavy (HREEs) rare earth elements (Gd/YbN = 1.30–1.85), and most samples have small positive Eu anomalies (Eu/Eu* = 0.95–1.25). The megacrystic amphibolite matrix is also enriched in large ion lithophile elements (LILEs) and depleted in high field strength elements (HFSEs) (e.g., Ba/Nb = 24–22). Megacrystic amphibolites formed through partial melting of subduction-modified lithospheric mantle that fractionated olivine and plagioclase, producing a high-Al-Fe mafic magma. Plagioclase megacrysts formed through extraction of a plagioclase-rich crystal-liquid mush from anorthosite that mixed with mafic magma and collected in the upper part of the mid-crustal magma (depth of ~20 km based on Al-in-hornblende geobarometry) chamber through flotation. Periodic tapping of this mixed source by extensional fractures led to emplacement of the amphibolites as dikes and may have interrupted the extensive fractionation and plagioclase separation necessary to form voluminous anorthosite intrusions. The late Miocene Monte Capanne and Porto Azzurro plutons are investigated by means of coupled U–Pb zircon and 40Ar/39Ar white mica dating to test the occurrence of long‐lived magmatic systems in the upper crust. Zircon crystallized for >1 Ma in both plutonic systems, with supersolidus conditions overlapping for ~220 ka indicating previously unrecognized co‐existence of the two reservoirs. The development of the Porto Azzurro high T‐aureole is post‐dated by continuous igneous zircon crystallization until ~6.0 Ma. By linking crystallization to post‐emplacement cooling of late‐stage pulses in both western and eastern Elba we constrain long‐lived sizeable reservoirs (possibly the same reservoir) in the Tyrrhenian upper crust between ~8 and 6 Ma. Crystal size distributions (CSD) of olivine were obtained for 17 samples of plagiodunite and Pl‑bearing dunite from the central part of the Yoko-Dovyren massif, northern Baikal region, Russia. Three types of CSD were identified: loglinear, bimodal, and lognormal. Combining these data with the results of petrological reconstructions, which earlier revealed two main types of the Dovyren magmas (using the method of geochemical thermometry), we proposed a basic scenario of interaction between magmatic suspensions of different temperature to explain the diversity of the CSD. The intratelluric olivine transported by magmas of different temperature, which had not subjected to abrupt cooling or heating in the chamber, retained an original loglinear CSD. For some portions of the hottest magma (∼1290°C), it is assumed that the original olivine evolved into a bimodal CSD due to accelerated crystallization at faster cooling of the high-temperature injections contacting relatively cold crystal mush (∼1190°C). An interpretation of the lognormal CSD suggests that part of the olivine crystals composing the protocumulate systems efficiently interacted with the pore melt infiltrating upward during the compaction of the underlying crystal mush. This led to cycles of partial dissolution and regrowth of the olivine grains resulting in a final lognormal CSD. The infiltrating hot melt, which was undersaturated with immiscible sulfide liquid, could dissolve sulfides preexisting in the low-temperature mush. This produced dunites with lognormal CSD relatively depleted in sulfur and chalcophile elements. We present U – Pb zircon geochronology and whole-rock Sr-Nd-Pb isotopic compositions of monzonitic plutons from NE Turkey to elucidate their genesis and provide significant insights into the generation of post-collisional I-type shoshonitic magmas. Zircon U – Pb dating of the monzonitic plutons yielded an emplacement of the Middle Eocene (44–39 Ma). Geochemically, the monzonitic plutons are I-type, metaluminous, and shoshonitic in composition, and have high contents of total alkalis and LILE, high ratios of LREE/HREE and LREE/HFSE, and show negative Nb-Ta-Ti and Eu (EuN/Eu* = 0.69–0.84) anomalies. The monzonitic plutons have homogeneous and moderately low initial 87Sr/86Sr (0.70464–0.70495), positive εNd(t) values (0.33 to 1.28), and narrow variation of the initial Pb isotope contents with 206Pb/204Pb (18.74–18.82), 207Pb/204Pb (15.64–15.65), and 207Pb/204Pb (38.81–38.90). The combined use of whole-rock trace elements and isotopic compositions with regional geology suggests that parental magmas of the monzonitic plutons were generated from mainly melt-metasomatized sub-continental lithospheric mantle source and lesser crustal components in an extensional orogenic setting, and then monzonitic magmas have evolved by dominantly fractional crystallization in crustal levels. The Ririwai anorogenic alkaline complex harbours extensive rare metal (Nb-Zr-Sn-Zn) mineralization. However, uncertainty still surrounds their origin and magmatic-hydrothermal processes responsible for their rare metal mineralization. The complex is composed of peralkaline arfvedsonite ± albite-bearing granites, mildly peralkaline fayalite-bearing granite porphyries, and weakly peraluminous biotite-bearing granites, all of which show diagnostic A1-type characteristics. Zircon U-Pb dating reveals emplacement ages between 181.4 ± 0.81 and 188.6 ± 7 Ma for the three rock units. Sm-Nd and Pb isotopes (εNd (t) = –0.6 to −5.4, 206Pb/204Pb = 17.68–17.93) constrained the Ririwai A-type granites to represent highly fractionated products of enriched mantle-derived magmas. Mass-balance modelling suggests that magma evolution was fuelled by extensive fractional crystallization of 50 ~ 60 vol.% K-feldspar, 30 ~ 35 vol% fayalite, 5 ~ 10 vol.% amphibole, and ~ 5 vol.% apatite under reduced and water-undersaturated (ΔFMQ = –1.55; logfo2 = –18.63; H2O = <2.0 wt.%) conditions and assimilation of ~ 50 vol.% crust. Whole rock and amphibole compositions revealed an increasing degree of fractionation from the fayalite-bearing granite porphyries through biotite-bearing granites to the arfvedsonite ± albite-bearing granites. This extended fractionation at the late stage of magma differentiation, facilitated by fluorine dissolution and concentration of excess HFSE and REE as alkali-fluorocomplexes in the fluorine-rich silicate melt, allowed the accumulation of economic rare metal pyrochlore and columbite mineralizations in the highly fractionated arfvedsonite± albite- and biotite-bearing granites, respectively. Nonetheless, the metasomatic reaction rim textures around the magmatic pyrochlore, coupled with the M-type lanthanide tetrad effect (TE1,3 >1.10) indicate the subsequent effect of hydrothermal processes. Tectonically, reactivated shear fractures and transcurrent faults following lithospheric stresses in a transtensional regime allowed magma uprising and emplacement of A-type granites in the Ririwai complex. The subduction-related Sunda-Banda arc hosts several giant and major Cu–Au–Mo porphyry and epithermal Au systems, making it one of the most important magmatic-related metallogenic belts in Indonesia. They are accompanied by a number of smaller systems, one of which is the recently discovered Randu-Kuning porphyry Cu-Au deposit on Java Island. The present study investigates the geochemical characteristics of this deposit through whole-rock and mineral geochemistry and mineral geothermobarometry, focusing on three sequential dioritic intrusions that make up the host igneous complex, two barren and the third mineralized. Moreover, a comparative analysis is performed between other porphyry deposits in the Sunda-Banda arc and with Grasberg in Papua. This study shows that the older porphyry deposits have mostly similar geochemical characteristics to the younger deposits, suggesting the same magma source, which is mantle-derived oxidized I-type magma. Amphibole geothermobarometry shows that the formation of syn-ore intrusion in the older porphyry was higher in temperature and pressure than those at the younger porphyry. The halogen and oxygen fugacities inferred from biotite and amphibole chemistry indicate an oxidized, water- and halogen-rich melt. Our study shows that combining amphibole and biotite chemistry and whole-rock geochemical data is useful to fingerprint the magmatic-hydrothermal processes, especially where multiple magmatic phases occur. Basalts from the Late Carboniferous to Early Permian are extensively developed in the central Lhasa subterrane, southern Tibet. Studying the petrogenesis of these rocks may have implications for the late Paleozoic arc magmatism along the central Lhasa subterrane uncovering more of the evolution of the Sumdo Paleo‐Tethys Ocean and its dynamic mechanism. Basalt samples from the Luobadui Formation in the Leqingla area, NW of Linzhou City in the central Lhasa subterrane, southern Tibet exhibit arc‐like geochemical signatures in a subduction‐zone tectonic setting characterized by high Al2O3 and low TiO2 contents, fractionated REE patterns with low Nb/La ratios and high LREE concentrations, and negative HFSE anomalies. Based on their higher Th/Ce, Nb/Zr, and lower Ba/Th, Pb/Nd ratios, slightly negative to positive εNd(t) values, and the relatively high Sr‐Pb isotopic compositions, these samples were probably derived from partial melting of a depleted mantle source of garnet + spinel lherzolite, metasomatized by subducted sediments around 297 Ma. Modeling of the trace elements indicates that these basalts experienced fractional crystallization of olivine, clinopyroxene and minor plagioclase during magma ascent and eruption. It is proposed that these Late Carboniferous–Early Permian basalts are associated with the northward subduction of the Sumdo Paleo‐Tethys Ocean seafloor along the southern margin of the central Lhasa subterrane. We present coupled textural, elemental, and boron isotopic data of tourmaline from the large Zhunuo–Beimulang collision-related porphyry copper deposits (PCDs) located within the western Gangdese, Tibet. Based on morphology and high-resolution mapping, the tourmaline is classified into three paragenetic generations. The first generation of schorlitic Tur-1 occurs in the monzogranite porphyry as disseminations intergrown with porphyritic K-feldspar and plagioclase. It shows decreasing Fe and Ca and increasing Mg and Al contents from core to rim and has relatively homogeneous δ11B values (− 9.9 to − 8.6‰); low Fe3+/(Fe2+ + Fe3+), Cu, F, H2O, and Sr/Y ratios; and high rare earth elements. These features indicate Tur-1 formed in a low fO2 and metal-poor granitic magma during the pre-mineralization stage. The second generation of porphyritic euhedral Tur-2 is hosted in diorite porphyry enclaves and dikes, where it is intergrown with plagioclase and biotite. It forms part of the schorl-dravite solid solution, with high Fe3+/(Fe2+ + Fe3+), Cu, F, H2O, Sr/Y, and δ11B (− 9.7 to − 5.1‰) values. These features indicate it crystallized from a hydrous, oxidized, metal-, and volatile-rich diorite magma. The third generation of Tur-3 is the most volumetrically important and occurs as veinlets and disseminations in the porphyry, or around Tur-1 and Tur-2. It shows radial and oscillatory zoning and is locally intergrown with chalcopyrite and pyrite within the main mineralization assemblage. It has δ11B values (− 10.5 to − 6.0‰) that overlap with Tur-1 and Tur-2 values. Tur-3 also has variable Fe3+/(Fe2+ + Fe3+), Cu, and volatiles (F and H2O), indicating it crystallized from oxidized to relatively reducing metal- and volatile-rich hydrothermal fluids. Overall, the three generations of tourmaline show a narrow range of δ11B values between − 10.5 and − 5.1‰ that are indicative of a single magmatic source. The high Cu, ferric iron, volatiles, and δ11B values in Tur-2 are interpreted to reflect injection of diorite magma into an open crustal magma storage system that led to the formation of an oxidizing and metal-volatile-rich porphyry system. The three stages of tourmaline formation reflect evolution of the magmatic–hydrothermal system from low fO2 conditions towards more oxidizing, volatile-rich conditions and then a return to more reducing conditions that accompanied Cu precipitation. Mafic enclaves in granites are generally considered to represent coeval mafic melts that derived from metasomatized mantle, which can provide valuable information about crust–mantle interaction. Exploring the genetic links between the mafic enclaves and their host monzogranite from the Triassic Zhashui Pluton, Qinling orogenic belt. The enclaves (220 ± 4.6 Ma) and the monzogranite (220 ± 2.8 Ma) display identical zircon U‐Pb ages, and they also share similar trace element and zircon Lu‐Hf isotopes, indicating a cognate source. The monzogranite displays zircon εHf(t) values of –0.99 to +1.98, while the mafic enclaves show similar values of –0.45 to +3.26; however, differences in mineral chemistry reveal different crystallization conditions. The amphibole from the mafic enclaves has higher temperature and pressure (757°C; 2.65 kbar) compared to those of the host monzogranite (733°C; 1.96 kbar), suggesting that mafic minerals in the enclaves crystallized at an early stage. Moreover, apatite in the mafic enclaves displays slightly higher volatile contents (0.72 wt%) than those of the monzogranite (0.66 wt%), indicating a volatile‐rich condition. These results suggest that the mafic enclaves represent early hydrous mafic cumulates in the granitic chamber, and subsequent magma convection would have led to the formation of the mafic enclaves. This study explores the capability of amphibole in tracing the physicochemical process of magma mixing through spatially associated gabbros, mafic microgranular enclaves (MMEs) and granodiorites from central Tibet. These rocks share similar zircon ages as well as zircon Hf‐O and plagioclase Sr isotopes. However, the amphiboles within the gabbros and granodiorites have different Sr and B isotope compositions, while amphiboles with both heterogeneous isotopic imprints occur in the MMEs. According to data and modeling, significant mixing of two isotopically distinct magmas is recorded by amphibole but not by zircon and plagioclase. Based on a synthesis of petrography, geochemistry and thermobarometry, we interpret this inconsistency by the crystallization order of minerals and propose that magma mixing occurred after the parent magma was emplaced at ∼10 km and cooled to ∼750°C. Our study highlights that amphibole may be a more sensitive tracer of magma mixing relative to other commonly used methods. The redox state of arc mantle has been considered to be more oxidized and diverse than that of the mid-ocean ridge, but the cause of the variation is debated. We examine the redox state of the Cenozoic global arc mantle by compiling measured/calculated fO2 of olivine-hosted melt inclusions from arc magma and modeled fO2 based on V/Sc and Cu/Zr ratios of arc basaltic rocks. The results indicate that the redox state of Cenozoic arc mantle is latitude dependent, with less oxidized arc mantle in the low latitudes, contrasting with a near constant across-latitude trend in the mid-ocean ridges. We propose that such a latitude-dependent pattern in the arc mantle may be controlled by the variation in the redox state of subducted sediment, possibly related to a latitudinal variation in the primary production of phytoplankton, which results in more organic carbon and sulfide deposited on the low-latitude ocean floor. Our findings provide evidence for the impact of the surface environment on Earth's upper mantle. The study of the fluid inclusions of W–Mo deposits in the mineralization area of Ningshan–Zhen'an , Shaanxi Province, China shows that the gas–liquid two-phase inclusions are mainly present in W–Mo deposits, and the ore-forming fluid can be divided into four types: high-temperature type, middle–high-temperature type, middle-temperature type and low-temperature type. The formation depths of the W–Mo mineralization range from 4.2 to 8.4 km. The boiling and mixing of fluid may have been important mechanisms for the formation of W–Mo mineralization. The skarn-type mineralization is dominated by magmatic water, the quartz-vein-type mineralization includes both magmatic water and meteoric water, and the meteoric water is more involved in the quartz-fluorite-vein-type, beryl-quartz-vein-type and pegmatite-type mineralization. Magma is the main source of sulfur; that is, magma is the main source of mineralization. Combined with the metallogenic setting and geological characteristics of typical ore deposits, in the process of structural system transformation in South Qinling, the ore-forming magma fluid in the Late Indosinian–Yanshanian period was uplifted and emplaced along the NW–WNW direction and NE–NNE direction, and eventually, NW–WNW fault-controlled skarn-type W–Mo mineralization and quartz-vein-type W–Mo deposits accompanied by greisenization, albitization and potash feldspathization formed. We present bulk-rock and mineral Fe isotope data of ultramafic to mafic xenoliths and basaltic to andesitic lavas from Adagdak Volcano (Adak Island, Central Aleutians) to study the effects of early differentiation on the Fe isotopic evolution of island arc basalts and their crystallization products. The Fe isotope composition of ultramafic cumulate xenoliths increases from dunite (δ56Fe = –0.09 to –0.02 ‰) to clinopyroxenite (δ56Fe = +0.06 to +0.09 ‰), consistent with higher modal proportions of clinopyroxene (δ56Fe = –0.05 to +0.11 ‰) relative to olivine (δ56Fe = –0.10 to +0.06 ‰) in the latter. Mid-crustal cumulate amphibole gabbro and hornblendite cumulates also record heavier Fe isotope compositions (δ56Fe = +0.04 to +0.08 ‰) due to the abundance of isotopically heavy amphibole (δ56Fe = +0.07 to +0.09 ‰) and magnetite (δ56Fe = +0.11 to +0.13 ‰) in these rocks. High inter-mineral fractionations observed in spinel-olivine and spinel-clinopyroxene pairs (Δ56Fe spl-ol = +0.12 to +0.28 and Δ56Fe spl-cpx = +0.06 to +0.19) suggest that spinel is not recording equilibrium crystallization conditions for the ultramafic assemblages, likely due to subsolidus Fe-Mg exchange. Our data also include Fe isotope measurements of one mantle dunite (δ56Fe = +0.03 ± 0.05 ‰). Five Adagdak lavas, spanning from basalts to andesites, yield a narrow range of δ56Fe between +0.03 and +0.06 ‰. Our results highlight the potential of amphibole in driving the Fe isotope depletion trends observed in many erupted arc lavas, as amphibole hosts 28–99 % of the FeO T budget in the amphibole gabbro and hornblendite cumulates. This is also supported by single-crystal synchrotron Mössbauer spectroscopy of two amphibole grains, the first from an amphibole gabbro and the second from a hornblendite, which yield Fe3+/ΣFe ratios of 0.55 ± 0.06 and 0.58 ± 0.02, respectively. Water content and hydrogen isotope compositions determined by secondary-ion mass spectrometry from the same amphibole grains indicate partial dehydrogenation. Using Rayleigh fractionation modeling to account for oxidation during post-crystallization dehydrogenation, we calculate magmatic Fe3+/ΣFe ratios of 0.41 ± 0.04 for the amphibole gabbro and 0.30 ± 0.05 for the hornblendite. These data are then used to estimate an appropriate Fe force constant for Adagdak amphibole and quantitatively evaluate the effects of amphibole fractionation. Through a fractional crystallization model, we show how arc melts may experience periods of increasing δ56Fe during olivine-dominated fractionation, followed by decreasing δ56Fe once magnetite and amphibole saturate as cumulate phases. Notably, this dichotomy between fractionation of isotopically light versus heavy cumulate assemblages and its effects on the Fe isotope evolution of arc magmas is not captured by the Adagdak lava record, highlighting the utility of cumulates in chronicling the early isotopic evolution of magmatic systems. Active hotspot volcanism is the surface expression of ongoing dynamic subsurface changes, such as the generation, transport, and stalling of magmas within the upper mantle and crust. Magmatic influx and migration affects local stress patterns in the crust and lithospheric mantle, which influences seismic anisotropy. A better understanding of those patterns helps improve robustness of models forecasting the likelihood of an eruption and prolonged seismicity, with detailed studies being required to observe the significant variations that can occur on small spatial and temporal scales. Here, we investigate seismic anisotropy before, during and after volcanic eruptions. We use local seismicity around El Hierro and La Palma, the two westernmost islands in the Canaries and sites of the most recent volcanic eruptions in the archipelago. We obtained 215 results in El Hierro during and after the 2011/2012 eruption with five three-component broadband seismic stations and 908 results around the 2021 eruption in La Palma with two three-component broadband stations. On La Palma, the majority of seismicity and splitting results are recorded during the eruption and simultaneous deflation of the island. Seismicity locations do not change significantly and fast shear wave polarisation direction is mostly constant, but some variation can be attributed to changes in the magmatic plumbing system. On El Hierro, the general radial pattern reflects stresses induced by the overall uplift of the island during multiple magma intrusion events. Temporal subsets reveal significant variations in location and depth of the events, as well as significant variations in fast polarisation direction caused by ongoing dynamic changes of under- and overpressurisation. An increase of results starting in 2018 hints towards renewed subsurface activity within deeper parts of the plumbing system, affecting the rate of overall seismicity but not any vertical movement of the island. The lithium cycling in the supra-subduction mantle wedge is crucial for understanding the generation of Li-rich magmas that may potentially source ore deposition in continental arcs. Here, we look from the mantle source perspective at the geological processes controlling the Li mobility in convergent margins, by characterizing a set of sub-arc mantle xenoliths from the southern Andes (Coyhaique, western Patagonia). The mineral trace element signatures and oxygen fugacity estimates (FMQ > + 3) in some of these peridotite xenoliths record the interaction with arc magmas enriched in fluid-mobile elements originally scavenged by slab dehydration. This subduction-related metasomatism was poorly effective on enhancing the Li inventory of the sub-arc lithospheric mantle, underpinning the inefficiency of slab-derived fluids on mobilizing Li through the mantle wedge. However, major and trace element compositions of mantle minerals in other xenoliths also record transient thermal and chemical anomalies associated with the percolation of slab window-related magmas, which exhibit an "adakite"-type geochemical fingerprint inherited by slab-derived melts produced during ridge subduction and slab window opening event. As these melts percolated through the shallow (7.2–16.8 kbar) and hot (952–1054 °C) lithospheric mantle wedge, they promoted the crystallization of metasomatic clinopyroxene having exceptionally high Li abundances (6–15 ppm). Numerical modeling shows that low degrees (< 10%) of partial melting of this Li-rich and fertile sub-arc lithospheric mantle generates primitive melts having two-fold Li enrichment (~13 ppm) compared with average subduction-zone basalts. Prolonged fractional crystallization of these melts produces extremely Li-enriched silicic rocks, which may stoke the Li inventory of mineralizing fluids in the shallow crust. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The East Qinling Molybdenum Belt (EQMB), which is located on the southern margin of the North China Craton (NCC), is the largest Mo province in the world. This belt hosts a significant number of Mesozoic magmatic-hydrothermal Mo deposits and a small portion of pre-Mesozoic Mo deposits. Understanding the mineralization timing and mechanism of the unique pre-Mesozoic Mo deposits is essential to comprehend the evolution of the EQMB, the pre-Mesozoic Mo enrichment, and the Mesozoic Mo mineralization event. The recently discovered Zhaiwa deposit is a porphyry Mo deposit located in the Xiong'er Terrane of the EQMB. In this study, five molybdenite samples from the Mo-bearing quartz veins were analyzed for Re-Os isotopes composition. These samples yield an isochron age of 1794 ± 45 Ma, which represents the age of mineralization. The mineralization is mostly hosted within the biotite-amphibole plagiogneiss and granite porphyry. LA-ICP-MS U-Pb data of zircons constrain the crystallization age of the granite porphyry to be at 1791 ± 16 Ma. The close spatial and temporal association suggests that the granite porphyry is the causative rocks of the Mo mineralization. The δ34S values of pyrite vary from 5.3 to 6.8‰, suggesting that the S was mainly derived from magmatic source. The intrusion of magmas and associated Mo mineralization are contemporaneous to the regional Xiong'er volcanism that occurred during the late Paleoproterozoic. The Xiong'er volcanism was triggered by partial melting of lithospheric mantle in an extensional setting. The results of our study provide robust evidence for a late Paleoproterozoic Mo metallogenic event along the southern margin of the NCC. Future exploration should also consider the potential of late Paleoproterozoic porphyry Mo mineralization existing in the EQMB, which is closely associated with the Xiong'er volcanism. The timing and duration of volatile generation from crystallizing magma reservoirs and fluid release across the magmatic‐hydrothermal interface depend on complex coupled interactions controlled by non‐linear, dynamic properties of magmas, rocks and fluids. Understanding these mechanisms is essential to explain the rare formation of economic porphyry copper deposits. For this study, we further developed a coupled numerical model that can simultaneously resolve magma and hydrothermal flow by introducing a description of fluid transport within the magma reservoir and volatile release to the host rock. Our simulations use realistic magma properties derived from published experimental and modeling studies and cover different magma compositions and water contents. We show that magma convection at melt‐dominated states leads to homogenization, which delays fluid release and promotes a rapid evolution toward a mush state. The onset of magmatic volatile release can be near‐explosive with a tube‐flow outburst event lasting <100 years for high initial water contents of >3.5 wt% H2O that could result in the formation of hydrothermal breccias and vein stockworks or trigger eruptions. This event can be followed by sustained fluid release at moderate rates by volatile flushing caused by magma convection. Subsequent fluid release from concentric tube rings by radial cooling of non‐convecting magma mush with a volume of ∼100 km3 at ∼5 km depth is limited to remaining water contents of ∼3.1 wt% H2O and lasts 50–100 kyr. Ore formation from hydrous magmas may thus involve distinct phases of volatile release. In this study, we investigate how fluids are transported within a coupled magmatic‐hydrothermal system and how the magma composition, including the initial amount of water, and magma convection can affect the process of subsurface fluid flow. Using insights from experimental and numerical studies, we designed computer simulations to investigate the formation of porphyry copper deposits. We find that magma convection plays a critical role in the initial stage of cooling, creating a uniform mixture of magma and volatiles that stays in suspension during an "incubation" period. During cooling, magmas with high water contents exhibit near‐explosive outgassing events that can be both precursors to volcanic eruptions or a pre‐ore stage. Subsequently, as convection ceases, the magma body undergoes a transition from homogeneous uniform to radial cooling with more gradual fluid release over 50–100 kyr, leading to metal enrichment in porphyry copper deposits. The physical process of crystal-melt separation is responsible for the accumulation of small to very large volumes (>100 km3) of eruptible rhyolitic melt in the shallow crust. Granitic intrusions, although providing a terminal, time-integrated image of melt segregation processes, host an unmatched record of the physical properties controlling mechanisms and rates of interstitial melt extraction from a crystal-rich source. We applied mass balance calculations and thermodynamic modeling simulations to an extensive bulk rock geochemistry dataset (>150 samples) collected in a Permian upper-crustal granitoid intrusion of the Italian Southern Alps. Textural and geochemical evidence indicate that this intrusion constituted a single, zoned magma body, with a crystal-rich base and a thick (~2 km), high-silica cap (75–77 wt% SiO₂). The large compositional variability of the crystal-rich materials suggests variable degrees of melt extraction efficiency and corresponding terminal porosities. Specifically, the loosely bimodal distribution of porosity values (φ) indicates that at least two distinct melt segregation mechanisms were operating in this system, which produced both high (0.65–0.45) and low terminal porosities (0.45–0.25) in the crystal-rich, cumulate materials. Modeling of latent heat budget shows that coexistence of cumulate products with differing terminal porosity signature can be explained by melt segregation processes taking place at different depths across a thick, interconnected magmatic reservoir with an initial homogenous water content (~4 wt% H2O). Deep in the mush column, low water activities (a H₂O < 0.5) promoted thermal buffering of cooling magma at high crystallinities, enabling residual melt extraction by percolation through a crystalline framework accompanied by compaction. Instead, at shallower depths, high water activities (a H₂O > 0.5) ensured prolonged magma residence at porosities that promoted crystal melt separation via hindered settling. Distinct melt extraction processes, acting synchronously but at different depths in vertically extensive silicic mush columns, can account for the large volumes of residual, haplogranitic melt mobilized during the relatively short lifespan of upper crustal magma reservoirs (~105 years). Magmatic systems below volcanoes are often dominated by partially crystalline magma over the long term. Rejuvenation of these systems during eruptive events can impact lava composition and eruption style—sometimes resulting in more violent or explosive activity than would be expected, as was the case at Fissure 17 during Kīlauea's 2018 eruption. Here, we explore how the crystallinity of unerupted intrusion magmas affect hybrid magma compositions and petrological signatures by constructing phase-equilibria models to evaluate mineral and melt compositions of low-MgO lavas erupted along the East Rift Zone of Kīlauea volcano on 30 to 31 January 1997 (Episode 54, Fissures A-F). We then compare calculated mixing proportions and petrologically derived magma volumes to GPS-based geodetic inversions of ground deformation and intrusion growth in an attempt to reconcile geodetic and petrologically estimated magma volumes. Open-system phase-equilibria thermodynamic models were used to constrain the composition, degree of differentiation, and thermodynamic state of a rift-stored, two pyroxene + plagioclase saturated low-MgO magma body immediately preceding its mixing with high-MgO recharge and degassed drainback (lava lake) magma from Pu'u'ō'ō', shortly before fissure activity within Nāpau Crater began on 29 January 1997. Mixing models constructed using the Magma Chamber Simulator reproduce the mineralogy and compositions of Episode 54 lavas within uncertainties and suggest that the identity of the low-MgO magma body may be either variably differentiated remnants of un-erupted magmas intruded into Nāpau Crater in October 1968, or another spatially and compositionally similar magma body. We find that magmas derived from a single, compositionally stratified magma emplaced beneath Nāpau Crater in 1968 can mix with mafic Kīlauea magmas to reproduce average Episode 54 bulk lava, mineralogy and mineral compositions without necessitating the interaction of multiple, low-MgO rift-stored magma bodies to produce Episode 54 lava compositions. Further, by constructing phase equilibria-based mixing models of Episode 54, we can better define the pre-eruptive state of the magmatic system. The resultant mineral assemblages and compositions are consistent with the possibility that the now-fractionated, rift-stored magma body was compositionally stratified and ~ 40% to 50% crystalline at the time of mixing. Finally, we estimate the volume of the low-MgO magma body to be ~7.51 Mm3. Phase-equilibria model results corroborate field and geochemical relationships demonstrating how shallow intrusions at intraplate shield volcanoes can crystallize, evolve, and then be remobilized by new, later batches of mafic magma. Most notably, our MCS models demonstrate that the pre-eruptive conditions of an intrusive body may be recovered by examining mineral compositions within mixed lavas. Discrepancies between the geodetic constraints on volumes of stored rift versus newly intruded (recharge) magma and our best-fit results produced by MCS mixing models (which respectively are mmafic:mlow-MgO ≈ 2 vs. mmafic:mlow-MgO ≈ 0.75) are interpreted to highlight the complex nature of incomplete mixing on more localized scales as reflected in erupted lavas, compared to geodetically constrained volumes that likely reflect large spatial scale contributions to a magmatic system. These dissimilar volume relationships may also help to constrain eruptive versus unerupted volumes in magmatic systems undergoing mixing. We investigate ten of the most recent tephra-fall deposits emplaced between ≤21 and 2 ka from the Pacheco stage of Misti volcano, Peru, to elucidate magma dynamics and explosive eruption triggers related to magma storage, recharge, and remobilization. Whole-rock, glass, and mineral textures and compositions indicate the presence of broadly felsic, intermediate, and mafic magmas in a chemically and thermally stratified magma storage system (Zones 1–3) that interact to differing extents prior to eruption. Intermediate magmas are defined by plagioclase + amphibole + two-pyroxenes + Fe-Ti oxides and phase equilibria indicate they formed at ~300 to 600 MPa and ~950°C to 1000°C. Intermediate magmas dominate the Pacheco stage and either erupted alone as hybridized magmas or mingled with minor volumes of cool felsic magmas (~800°C) in which only plagioclase + Fe-Ti oxides are stable. Felsic magmas do not exclusively comprise any tephra-fall deposit emplaced during the Pacheco stage but were remobilized by recharge and mixing with intermediate magmas in order to erupt. Furthermore, felsic-hosted amphibole cognate to the intermediate magmas are reacted despite the felsic magmas being water saturated, which suggests they are staged above the amphibole stability limit (≤200 MPa). The cryptic presence of mafic magmas is indicated by high-An plagioclase cores (An74–88), rare anhedral olivine (Fo77–80), and possibly high Mg# augite and amphibole (up to Mg# 84 and 77, respectively). The dearth of basalt to basaltic andesite melts recorded in erupted glasses and exclusivity of high-An plagioclase to crystal cores signals mafic magmas are staged deeper in the crust than the intermediate magmas. Periodic interactions between these magmas tracked via glass compositions and crystal exchange reveal an alternation between the production of mingled magmas and their eruption shortly after a recharge event, followed by a period of homogenization and eruption of hybridized magmas. As such, we identify magma recharge as a key mechanism by which half of the explosive eruptions were triggered in the Pacheco stage. A >100°C increase in Misti's fumarole temperatures from 1967 to 2018 coincident with changes in fumarolic gas compositions is consistent with degassing of a mafic recharge magma, signaling that Misti could produce similar explosive eruptions in the future. Porphyry Cu, and porphyry Cu–Au deposits, are associated with arc magmatism and their ore-forming systems generally follow the magmatic evolution of typical arcs. However, most arc magmas are barren and giant economic porphyry Cu ± Au deposits are rare. In this study, we model variations in rare earth element concentrations in evolving arc magmas and giant porphyry Cu ± Au systems to quantify the percentage of the fractionating minerals required to produce the observed changes. We find that, during the andesitic stage of fractionation, ore-forming systems in thick crusts fractionate ~35% more amphibole than an average of thick arc magma systems (the thick-crust reference suite) and that ore-forming systems in thin crusts fractionate twice as much amphibole as their equivalent thin-arc magma reference suite. Thick-crust ore-forming suites also fractionate ~50% less plagioclase, and thin-crust ore systems ~40% less plagioclase, than their associated reference suites during the same andesitic stage of fractionation. Taken together, these observations imply that ore-producing magmas are appreciably wetter than their associated barren reference suites. Our modeling also shows that ~80% more amphibole is required to reproduce the andesite stage of fractionation in the thick-crust reference suite than in its thin-crust equivalent, suggesting that magmas produced under thick crusts are wetter than those produced under thin crusts. On the other hand, the chalcophile element contents of the thick- and thin-crust ore-forming systems are similar to and higher than those of the thick- and thin-crust reference suites, respectively. Therefore, we suggest that the high water content plays a critical role in the formation of giant porphyry Cu ore in thick crusts, whereas both high chalcophile contents and high water contents are required to form giant porphyry Cu–Au deposits in thin crusts. The high fraction of amphibole fractionation in giant economic porphyry suites, compared with their relevant reference suites, results in lower Y in the ore-associated suites and this difference increases with fractionation. As a consequence, plots of Y against MgO can be used to identify porphyries that have economic potential and are preferred to Sr/Y plots because they are less affected by the intense alteration associated with giant porphyry Cu ± Au deposits. This study estimated the gravity change expected on the sea surface due to magma accumulation beneath submarine volcanoes. For calculation, a semi-analytical model describing the deformation of an infinite elastic cone was considered, in which a point spherical source was embedded on the axis. The expected gravity change exceeds 0.2 mGal in certain scenarios when |$\delta V = 10^8\, \mathrm{m^3}$| of source volume change occurs 2 km below the summit, and the summit is shallower than 300 m below the sea surface. The steeper the slope of a submarine volcano, the greater the expected gravity change. 0.2 mGal of gravity variation can be detected with recent marine gravimeters such as cold atom interferometers. The formation of Fe-Ti oxides-rich layers is commonly associated with open-system magma chamber dynamics. These processes are widely discussed due to the economic importance of Fe-Ti-(V) deposits, although an alkaline-system approach to the matter is still scarce. In this study, we use petrography, mineral chemistry, X-ray diffraction and elemental geochemical analyses (whole-rock and Sr isotopes) to discuss the process associated with the formation of Fe-Ti-(V) oxide-rich clinopyroxenite (OCP, 7–15 vol.%) and magnetitite (MTT, 85 vol.%) from the Ponte Nova alkaline mafic–ultramafic massif (PN, K-Ar 87.6 Ma). Ilmenite and Ti-magnetite from both OCP and MTT exhibit higher MgO contents (MgO > 5.0 wt%) than other PN rocks. OCP shows high 87Sr/86Sri ratios, equivalent to crustal-contaminated lithotypes of the PN Central Intrusion, while MTTs are less radiogenic. The oxide supersaturation in silicate mafic magmas is typically associated with the dislocation of the liquid cotectic evolution line, shifting to Fe-Ti-(V) oxide minerals stability field, mainly Ti-magnetite. Different magmatic processes can lead to these changes such as crustal contamination and magma recharge. For the PN massif, the OCP was formed by the assimilation of crustal contaminants in a mush region, near the magma chamber upper walls, which was associated with the evolution of the main pulse. Differently, the MTT would have its origin related to the interaction between magma chamber evolved liquids and more primitive liquids during a new episode of magma recharge. Understanding magma plumbing systems hinges upon an intricate comprehension of crystal populations concerning size, chemistry, and origin. We introduce an innovative, yet elegantly simple approach—the 'number–length of crystals (N-LoC) multifractal model'—to classify crystal sizes, unveiling compelling insights into their distribution dynamics. This model, a departure from conventional crystal size distribution (CSD) diagrams, reveals multifractal patterns indicative of distinct class sizes within igneous rock crystals. By synthesizing multiple samples from experimental studies, natural occurrences, and numerical models, we validate this method's efficacy. Our bi-logarithmic N-LoC diagrams for cooling-driven crystallized samples transcend the confines of traditional CSD plots, identifying variable thresholds linked to cooling rates and quenching temperatures. These thresholds hint at pulsative nucleation and size-dependent growth events, offering glimpses into crystallization regimes and post-growth modifications like coalescence and coarsening. Examining multifractal log–log plots across time-series samples unravels crystallization histories during cooling or decompression. Notably, microlites within volcano conduits delineate thresholds influenced by decompression rate and style, mirroring nucleation and growth dynamics observed in experimental studies. Our fractal methodology, presenting a more direct approach with fewer assumptions than the classic CSD method, stands poised as a potent alternative or complementary tool. We delve into its potential, facilitating comparisons between eruptive styles in volcanoes while deliberating on inherent limitations. This work not only advances crystal size analysis methodologies but also holds promise for inferring nuanced volcanic processes and offers a streamlined avenue for crystal size evaluation in igneous rocks.
