1. The Impact of Shunt Capacitor Size and Location on Power Losses in Radial Distribution System

Abstract

High power losses is produced in the distribution side as compared to another subsystem of the power system (transmission and generation). Installation of a shunt capacitor in the distribution is one of the alternative solution for power losses reduction. However, the non-optimal location and size of shunt capacitor may lead to the increment of losses. In order to reduce the power losses, the location and size of shunt capacitor are optimised simultaneously using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm. Different cases are carried out to observe the impact of the shunt capacitor placement. The result shows that the location of shunt capacitor influences the system power losses reduction. The shunt capacitor must be located near to the load. The optimal location and size of shunt capacitor is achieved efficiently using PSO algorithm. The study is tested on the 33-bus test system and is simulated by using MATLAB software.

2. CONCENTRIC TUBE-FOULING RIG FOR INVESTIGATION OF FOULING DEPOSIT FORMATION FROM PASTEURISER OF VISCOUS FOOD LIQUID

Abstract

This paper reports the work on developing concentric tube-fouling rig, a new fouling deposit monitoring device. This device can detect and quantify the level of fouling deposit formation. It can also functioning as sampler for fouling deposit study, which can be attached at any food processing equipment. The design is initiated with conceptual design. The rig is designed with inner diameter of 7 cm and with tube length of 37 cm. A spiral insert with 34.5 cm length and with 5.4 cm diameter is fitted inside the tube to ensure the fluid flows around the tube. In this work, the rig is attached to the lab-scale concentric tube-pasteurizer to test its effectiveness and to collect a fouling sample after pasteurization of pink guava puree. Temperature changes are recorded during the pasteurization and the data is used to plot the heat transfer profile. Thickness of the fouling deposit is also measured. The trends for thickness, heat resistance profile and heat transfer profile for concentric tube-fouling rig matched the trends obtained from lab-scale concentric tube-pasteurizer very well. The findings from this work have shown a good potential of this rig however there is a limitation with spiral insert, which is discussed in this paper.

Abstract

This paper investigates the performance of an elegance code set algorithm known as Flexible Cross Correlation (FCC) code to be run into a simulation test of proposed RoF system. Executing OCDMA Code into RoF framework is seen as a promising technique for enhancing spectral efficiency and meanwhile enhanced the length of fiber optic cable and data bit rate execution while reduce the passive equipment device. This code can efficaciously reduce the results of phase-induced intensity noise (PIIN), it has the multiple access interference (MAI) cancellation belongs to RoF system and at the same time simple and easy within the code construction. Bit error rate (BER) performance is assessed for this proposed simulation system. The evaluation made based on the performance of fiber length, data bit rate, related with Bit Error Rate (BER) and also the complexity of the system. The extensive simulation results reveal FCC code possibly will accomplish sufficiently up to 51 km at BER 10-9 for data rate 155 Mbps as matched to 622 Mbps with exponentially increases at BER 10-12 error floor and it is fit for short haul networking such as FTTH and local area network (LAN).

Abstract

In this work, we proposed Stimulated Brillouin Scattering (SBS) in an optical generation of millimeter waves (mm-waves) for radio over fiber (RoF) system with the transmission of 2.5 Gbps data rate. SBS method is achieved by imposing continuous wave (CW) laser in a single mode optical fiber (SMF) via Mach-Zehnder Modulator (MZM) with Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifier (EDFA) and two pump lasers. Mm-waves signal of 80 GHz was generated from a 40 GHz radio frequency (RF) synthesizer. Simulation result and the analysis comparison of effective light power are investigated with different SMF loop length from 20 km until 120 km. The performance of SBS system is analysed and the generated of millimeter waves signal can be transmit with length up to 120 km based on eye pattern and Bit Error Rate (BER) curve.

Abstract

Discrete multiwavelet critical-sampling transform (DMWCST) has been proposed instead of fast Fourier transform (FFT) in the realization of the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system. The proposed structure further reduces the level of interference and improves the bandwidth efficiency through the elimination of the cyclic prefix due to the good orthogonality and time-frequency localization properties of the multiwavelet transform. The proposed system was simulated using MATLAB to allow various parameters of the system to be varied and tested. The performance of DMWCST-based OFDM (DMWCST-OFDM) was compared with that of the discrete wavelet transform-based OFDM (DWT-OFDM) and the traditional FFT-based OFDM (FFT-OFDM) over flat fading and frequency-selective fading channels. Results obtained indicate that the performance of the proposed DMWCST-OFDM system achieves significant improvement compared to those of DWT-OFDM and FFT-OFDM systems. DMWCST improves the performance of the OFDM system by a factor of 1.5–2.5 dB and 13–15.5 dB compared with the DWT and FFT, respectively. Therefore the proposed system offers higher data rate in wireless mobile communications.

Abstract

In this paper, we have proposed a high performance network design, which is based on mixed optical Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) system using Zero Cross Correlation (ZCC) code and multiband Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) called catenated OFDM. In addition, we also investigate the related changing parameters such as; effective power, number of user, number of band, code length and code weight. Then we theoretically analyzed the system performance comprehensively while considering up to five OFDM bands. The feasibility of the proposed system architecture is verified via the numerical analysis. The research results demonstrated that our developed modulation solution can significantly enhanced the total number of user; improving up to 80% for five catenated bands compared to traditional optical CDMA system, with the code length equals to 80, transmitted at 622 Mbps. It is also demonstrated that the BER performance strongly depends on number of weight, especially with less number of users. As the number of weight increases, the BER performance is better. Abstract

Free space optical communication fsoc is vulnerable with fluctuating atmospheric. This paper focus analyzes the finding of new technique dual diffuser modulation (ddm) to mitigate the atmospheric turbulence effect. The performance of fsoc under the presence of atmospheric turbulence will cause the laser beam keens to (a) beam wander, (b) beam spreading and (c) scintillation. The most deteriorate the fsoc is scintillation where it affected the wavefront cause to fluctuating signal and ultimately receiver can turn into saturate or loss signal. Ddm approach enhances the detecting bit ‘1’ and bit ‘0’ and improves the power received to combat with turbulence effect. The performance focus on signal-to-noise (snr) and bit error rate (ber) where the numerical result shows that the ddm technique able to improves the range where estimated approximately 40% improvement under weak turbulence and 80% under strong turbulence.
