The COVID-19 issue forced necessary changes in medical education that have been demanding and adjusting for different medical colleges, but they also provide a great opportunity for the betterment and possible challenging and useful transformation of medical education. This chapter examined the responses of medical organizations to this pandemic, its merits, and its challenges. It analyzed the potential effects of new strategies’ recognition and application on medical education in the post-COVID-19 period. The status of medical education before COVID-19 and the challenges of adopting competencies have been reviewed. The teaching and assessment strategies innovated in the COVID-19 era and reflections from faculty and students were discussed. Over the previous years, the pandemic has questioned concepts about how medical education should be delivered. The COVID-19 pandemic offers the medical education community a unique chance to reorient itself away from outdated standards and practices and toward more societally responsible and accountable standards and practices. All involved in medical education should all work together to prevent situations from “snapping back” to how they have always been because they were accepted practices and would be lost if the pandemic had the potential to disrupt growth and reform.

Background: The upgrowth and rapid prevalence of pandrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii strains that have a pathogenic activity to cause several infections are of considerable influence on the health of communities worldwide. No infections by these bacterial strains were recorded before 1998, and currently, the numbers are on the rise. Methods: The A. baumannii strains were isolated from male and female patients in Medical Microbiology Department, King Fahd Medical City (KFMC) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia between 1/1/2020 to 29/12/2020. The statistical analysis was performed base on sex, age, source of samples, and response to commercially available antibiotics. The A. baumannii strains that resisted all the antibiotics including colistin and imipenem were selected for the synergic test. Results: The data showed that 62.28%, 77.07% of 342 A. baumannii strains were isolated from males and patients over 35 years of age. A. baumannii strains (pandrug-A. baumannii) that can resist all tested antibiotics were 8.19%. The major source of the A. baumannii isolates was the respiratory system (>50%). Among all isolates (N = 342), azidothymidine-resistant A. baumannii strains were more than 85%. There is a statistically significant difference (P < 0.05) in the number of colistin-resistant A. baumannii strains isolated from males comparing with the female. The combinations of colistin and silver nanoparticles or imipenem and silver nanoparticles resulted in synergistic action led to reduction of MICs of colistin, imipenem, and silver nanoparticles (more than four-fold reduction). Also, the combinations of colistin and imipenem had high synergistic action. Conclusion: The pandrug-resistant A. baumannii strains may represent a current and future threat that must be fought, and the synergy action of antibiotics and nanoparticles may be one of the available, rapid, and easy strategies to confront this global problem.

Background and aimsPsychotic-like experiences (PLEs) are hallucinatory or delusional experiences that fall below the threshold of a diagnosable psychotic disorder. Although PLEs are common across the spectrum of psychiatric disorders, they also have been commonly reported in the general population. In this study, we aimed to describe the types of PLEs experienced by university students in Qatar. Furthermore, we aimed to examine how students frame, explain, and deal with these experiences as well as understand how culture and religion may shape the way students attribute and respond to these experiences.MethodThis study used a qualitative phenomenological approach. For collecting the data, we conducted semi-structured interviews using the Questionnaire for Psychotic Experiences (QPE). The QPE is a valid and reliable tool to assess the phenomenology of psychotic-like experiences. The questionnaire was translated into Arabic and tested and validated in Qatar (a fast-developing Muslim country in the Arabian Peninsula). We conducted interviews in Arabic with 12 undergraduate female students at Qatar University (the only national university in Qatar). The interviewees were of different Arab nationalities. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and two authors conducted the content-thematic analysis separately, as a strategy to validate the findings. The study was part of a larger nationally funded project that was approved by the Qatar University Institutional Review Board. The approvals were granted before any interview was conducted.ResultsThe PLEs were prevalent in our non-clinical sample. The content-thematic analysis revealed the following main themes about these experiences: type, impact on daily function, frequency, immediate reaction, attribution style, assumptions about the root cause of these experiences, other associations, and religious links to experiences. The results also highlighted that religion and culture play a role in shaping the types of hallucinations and some delusions.ConclusionOur findings support the importance of culture and religion in relation to the types and explanations that students provided when describing PLEs. Notably, it was common among those who reported having these experiences to normalize and link PLEs to real-life events. This may be a defense mechanism to protect the self against the stigma of mental illness and from being labeled as “abnormal”.

Background\ud \ud Prevalence trends from Arabic speaking countries on psychiatric symptoms before and after COVID-19 pandemic is lacking. We estimated the point prevalence and change in depression and anxiety symptoms scores in relation to sociodemographic variables following the resolution of the first wave in Qatar compared with before the pandemic.\ud \ud \ud \ud Methods\ud \ud We conducted a trend analysis using repeated nationally representative cross-sectional surveys spanning 2017, 2018, 2020/2021 and using the Physician Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) to assess depressive and anxiety symptoms. Negative binomial regression modelled changes in these symptoms in relation sociodemographics and survey year.\ud \ud \ud \ud Results\ud \ud The two-week prevalence of depressive symptoms (≥10 on the PHQ-9) was 6.6% in 2017 and 6.5% in 2020/2021 (p = 0.986). The two-week prevalence of anxiety symptoms (≥10 or higher on the GAD-7) was 3.6% in 2018 and 5.1% in 2020/2021 (p = 0.062). The data for 2020/21 showed a 35.1% and 29.2% decrease in depression and anxiety symptoms scores compared to pre-pandemic years (2017/2018) after adjusting for sociodemographic factors.\ud \ud \ud \ud Limitations\ud \ud Screening tools rather than structured interviews were to assess depressive and anxiety symptoms.\ud \ud \ud \ud Conclusions\ud \ud Prevalence for depression and anxiety post the first COVID wave did not differ significantly to pre-pandemic estimates. The end of the first wave of the pandemic had a ‘levelling’ effect on these symptoms and their associations with traditional sociodemographic risk factors. The 2020/21 depression and anxiety symptoms scores remained high for Qataris and Arabs, suggesting that these cultural groups may benefit most from public mental health interventions.

Based on the excellent nutrient level, the current study was focused on isolation and anti-bacterial activity of the actinomycetes from marine mangrove soil samples. As result, 10 different strains of actinomycetes strains were identified on actinomycetes isolation agar plates. The identified strains were shown with white, clear, uncontaminated well matured spore producing ability. Based on the initial observation, the isolated colonies were actinomycetes. The partially extracted crude compound shown excellent anti-bacterial activity against P. aeruginosa and K. pneumoniae with 15 mm and 13 mm zone of inhibitions were observed at 500 μL concentrations. The minimum inhibition concentration result was also confirmed the 500 μL concentration against both the tested concentration with high inhibition rate. Then, the intracellular damages, decreased cell growth of the crude actinomycetes extract treated bacterial strains were clearly observed by confocal laser scanning electron microscope. The extracellular damages of bacterial cell wall and shape of the both the pathogens were clearly shown by scanning electron microscope. Therefore, all the results were clearly supported to the partially extracted crude compound and it has excellent anti-bacterial activity against tested multi drug resistant bacteria.

The xylanolytic and amylolytic yeasts were qualitatively determined by Cong red xylan agar and soluble starch agar plates, respectively. The most xylanase and α-amylase inducible strain (AUN-02) was selected and identified using PCR amplification of 26S rRNA gene and sequence analysis. The comparison of the alignment results and phylogenetic analysis of the sequences of the isolated yeast to published rRNA gene sequences in GenBank, confirmed the identification of the isolate as Pichia membranifaciens. Xylanase and α-amylase production by isolated P. membranifaciens were investigated at different pH values (4-8), temperature degrees (20-45°C), incubation time (1-7 days) and various substrates.A higher production of xylanase (38.8 U/mL) and a-amylase (28.7 U/mL) was obtained after 4 days of fermentation of P. membranifaciens. Higher activity of xylanase (36.83 U/mL) and a-amylase (27.7 U/mL) was obtained in the fermentation of P. membranifaciens in a culture medium adjusted to pH 7.0. The optimum temperature showed maximum xylanase and a-amylase activity (42.6 and 32.5 units/mL, respectively) was estimated at 35 °C. The xylanase and a-amylase activities of P. membranifaciens were estimated and compared for the different substrates tested. The strain revealed 100% relative activity of xylanase and a-amylase on beechwood and potato starch, respectively. The affinity of enzymes towards substrate was estimated using Km values. The Km values of xylanase and α-amylase increased in the order of pH’s 7.0, 6.0 and 4.5 (0.85, 1.6 and 3.4 mg xylan/mL and 0.22, 0.43 and 2.8 mg starch/mL, respectively). the yeast P. membranifaciensis is suitable for produce neutral xylanase and α-amylase enzymes. So, it could be used as a promising strain for production of these enzymes in industrial field.

The multi-drug resistant effect of the Gram negative bacteria K. pneumoniae was identified by disc diffusion method using specific UTI panel discs of Kleb 1 HX077 and Kleb 2 HX090 HEXA. Among the multi-drug resistant bacteria, the carbapenem resistant (CR) effect of the K. pneumoniae was screened by specific carbapenem detection antibiotics of HEXA HX066 and HX0103 HEXA by disc diffusion method. In addition, the effective antibiotics were further performed against K. pneumoniae by minimum inhibition concentration method. Further, the carbapenemase genes of VIM 1 and IMP 1 were detected from the isolated strains by multiplex PCR method. Furthermore, the biofilm forming ability of selected carbapenem resistant K. pneumoniae was initially identified by tissue culture plate method and confirmed by exopolysaccharide arrest ability of congo red agar assay. Finally, our result was proved that the identified K. pneumoniae is carbapenemase producing strain, and its virulence was extended with strong biofilm formation.

Urinary tract infections are second most important diseases worldwide due to the increased amount of antibiotic resistant microbes. Among the Gram negative bacteria, P. mirabilis is the dominant biofilm producer in urinary tract infections next to E. coli. Biofilm is a process that produced self-matrix of more virulence pathogens on colloidal surfaces. Based on the above fact, this study was concentrated to inhibit the P. mirabilis biofilm formation by various in-vitro experiments. In the current study, the anti-biofilm effect of essential oils was recovered from the medicinal plant of Solanum nigrum, and confirmed the available essential oils by liquid chromatography-mass spectroscopy analysis. The excellent anti-microbial activity and minimum biofilm inhibition concentration of the essential oils against P. mirabilis was indicated at 200 µg/mL. The absence of viability and altered exopolysaccharide structure of treated cells were showed by biofilm metabolic assay and phenol–sulphuric acid method. The fluorescence differentiation of P. mirabilis treated cells was showed with more damages by confocal laser scanning electron microscope. Further, more morphological changes of essential oils treated cells were differentiated from normal cells by scanning electron microscope. Altogether, the results were reported that the S. nigrum essential oils have anti-biofilm ability.

In recent decades, Iraq has witnessed several military operations. This has led to huge damages to the infrastructure of some main cities. The traditional construction methods seem not to be able to fulfill the rapid reconstruction works needed, while prefabricated building systems seem to be promising. This paper aims at evaluating the possibilities of using prefabrication systems for schools building as a pilot study for wider adoption. An extensive literature review was carried out to identify the features of construction prefabrication and its requirements. Then a thorough investigation of the possibilities of adopting this approach in Iraq and the major expected obstacles was carried out. A questionnaire survey has been conducted with (96) stakeholders who have experience in prefabricated building projects. The results showed that the highest rating of benefits went to time and productivity, while the highest rating of obstacles went to lack of government support. Therefore the top proposed action included the adoption of a clear governmental strategy for change. Finally, the respondents agreed that school building is the most suitable type of projects to start with.

In this study, the anti-oxidant and anti-bacterial activity of marine brown algae Turbinaria ornata (T. ornate) extract was purified by soxhlet apparatus method. The invitro studies of total anti-oxidant activity and DPPH hydroxyl scavenging activity assays were suggested that the T. ornata extract has more anti-oxidant activity. Agar well diffusion and minimum inhibition concentration results were exhibited excellent inhibition effect of T. ornata extract against P. aeruginosa at 300 µg/mL concentration. The time-dependent bacterial inhibition assay was also confirmed the 300 µg/mL concentration at 24 h. Further, the increased death cells and extracellular shape alteration results were observed by confocal laser scanning electron microscope and scanning electron microscope. Therefore, our result was suggested that the T. ornata extract as a promising anti-bacterial agent for multi-drug resistant P. aeruginosa.

The radical proliferation of pathogenic bacteria and their infections causes significant issues for human health and the environment. Today, biopolymers are used to produce different nanoparticles. In the present investigation, the fabricated chitosan/agar-silver nanoparticles (Cht/Ar-AgNPs)-coated papers were tested for antibacterial applications. Agar was used as a reducing agent for the synthesis of AgNPs. Synthesized Ar-AgNPs were examined through optical, phase crystallinity and topological analysis. Cht and Ar-AgNPs solution was mixed with various ratios of 9:1, 8:2, 7:3, 6:4, and 5:5 by weight. In addition to that, the conformity of Cht/Ar-AgNPs-coated papers was characterized by structural, spectral, and morphological analysis. However, Cht/Ar-AgNPs-coated papers were subjected to antibacterial properties. The ratio of (6:4) Cht/Ar-AgNPs-coated paper showed excellent antibacterial agent, and it can be used as extending the food product shelf life.

The beneficial live microbes of humans and animals are termed probiotics, and the chemical compounds that improve the growth of probiotics are known as prebiotics. Paraprobiotics and postbiotics refer to dead or inactivated living cells of probiotics and healthful metabolic products that are produced by the living cells of probiotics, respectively. Although the healthful, functional, nutritional, and immune benefits of probiotics and prebiotics are scientifically well established beyond a reasonable doubt, their potential biological roles against COVID-19 infection still warrant further clinical and laboratory investigation.

Exotic woody weed plants are a very serious threat to seed dispersed by ungulate in the tropical forest of Asia. The ungulates in Point Calimere Wildlife Sanctuary (PCWS) are a significant role in native indigenous seed dispersal. The exotic woody weed tree Prosopis juliflora prevalence distributed in the PCWS and they might potentially alter the native medicinal plant species. In the present investigation, we have assessed the seed dispersal by ungulates in PCWS from January to March 2017. Four different ungulate species were selected to understand their seed dispersal rate of different plant species in selected sanctuary. This investigation was planned to confirm the seed dispersal by ungulates of blackbuck, spotted deer, wild boar and feral horse. Among the four different ungulates tested, the maximum numbers of pellets collected from blackbuck and no seed found in their pellets. The low quantities of pellets were collected from wild boar and this study has recorded medium-sized ungulates which dispersed variety of plant. However, the dispersal of the seed of medicinal plants were not considerably high and relatively moderate percentage of seeds dispersal occurred in medium-sized ungulates like wild boar and spotted deer. P. juliflora had 100% seed germination rate were observed from the faecal samples of wild boar and feral horse. The control seed achieved maximum seedling rate than the ungulates seeds.

Microbial enhanced oil recovery (MEOR) is a kind of enhanced oil recovery (EOR) development, often used as a tertiary stage where oil recovery is no longer possible utilizing primary and secondary conventional techniques. Among a few potential natural operators valuable for MEOR, biosurfactants, biopolymers and biosurfactant based nanoparticles assume key jobs. Biosurfactant which are produced by microorganisms’ act as are surface active agents that can be used as an alternative to chemically synthesized surfactants. Pseudomonas aeruginosa TEN01, a gram-negative bacterium isolated from the petroleum industry is a potential biosurfactant (Rhamnolipid) producer using cassava waste as the substrate. This work focuses on production and characterization of rhamnolipid from P. aeruginosa TEN01 and its use in enhanced oil recovery. The effectiveness of Chitosan that is deacetylated form of chitin which is a biopolymer that provides density and viscosity to the fluids is not known in enhanced oil recovery yet and so it is studied. Moreover, the fabrication of biosurfactant-mediated silver nanocrystals and its application in enhanced oil recovery is also studied. Sand-Pack column was constructed and the mechanism of oil recovery in the column was studied. While incubating the crude oil containing sand packed column with Biosurfactant-biopolymer and brine flooding in the ratio of 1:2, and Biosurfactant incubation - flooding with 3 g/l of biopolymer was found to be 34.28% and 44.5% respectively. The biosurfactant based silver nanoparticles are non-toxic and have better stability when compared to chemically synthesized silver nanoparticles. The oil recovery percentage by chemical based Ag NPs and biosurfactant based Ag NPs are 14.94% and 14.28% respectively.

The objective of the present work was to observe and profile various antibiotic resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus and highlight the need for continuous surveillance. Data regarding antibiotic-resistant S. aureus strains isolated and identified at the Medical Microbiology Department, King Khalid Hospital, Riyadh was obtained. Bacterial isolates were collected from several sites of infections in patients and an evaluation of susceptibility were carried out using a fully automated Vitek2 system. Relative frequency (%), odds ratios and Ward's minimum variance were calculated. The results showed that wounds were a source of more than 40% of the S. aureus (MRSA) strains that have ability to resist methicillin, and more than 45% of the methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (non-MRSA) strains. 40% of the isolates were MRSA (N = 251), and all MRSA strains were sensitive to vancomycin, daptomycin, teicoplanin, tigecycline, nitrofurantoin, and itraconazole while all non-MRSA (N = 338) strains were sensitive to vancomycin, cefoxitin, daptomycin, gentamicin, oxacillin, teicoplanin, tigecycline, and mupirocin. Strength of association between antibiotic-resistant S. aureus strains and source of samples (site of infection) was established. The study concluded that S. aureus strains had developed resistance towards 20 (for non-MRSA) and 22 (for MRSA) of the antibiotics tested. All MRSA strains were non-sensitive to amoxicillin/clavulanate, ampicillin cefoxitin, cefazolin, imipenem, oxacillin, and penicillin.

Initially, the excellent anti-oxidant property of the Ag NPs was synthesized from Chinese medicinal plant of Lonicera japonica, and their spectroscopic evidences were confirmed by UV-spectrometer. The morphology, size and shape of the synthesized Ag NPs were effectively identified by scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscope. Both the spectroscopic results were more evident, which UV-spectrometer peak was exhibited at 456 nm, scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscope results were also clearly shown ball like spherical shape. The potential anti-cancer effect of the Ag NPs was revealed, the selected Chinese plant Lonicera japonica was influenced the A549 lung cancer cells through excessive ROS production. The IC50 concentration of 75 µg/mL was shown decreased viability in Ag NPs treated A549 lung cancer cells of MTT assay. Consecutively, the MTT assay result was proved by irregular shape and damaged morphology in A549 lung cancer cells by images of phase contrast microscope. Finally, the result was also clearly stated that the synthesized Ag NPs was very effective against A549 human lung cancer cells and it use for future drug discovery for inhibiting the lung cancer.

The edible fruiting bodies of desert truffles are seasonally collected and consumed in many regions of the world. Although they are very expensive, they are bought and sold as a result of considerable scientific reports confirming their health and nutritional benefits. This study aimed to conduct laboratory production of the fungal biomass of Tirmania nivea as a natural renewable resource of many active biological compounds using an artificial growth medium. The T. nivea collected from Hafar Al-Batin, which is north of Saudi Arabia, and their ascospores were harvested and used to produce fungal biomass in potato dextrose broth. The cultivation was conducted using a shaking incubator at 25 °C for two weeks at 200 rpm. The crud extracts of the fungal biomass and mycelium-free broth were prepared using ethyl acetate, methanol and hexane. Preliminary gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) analysis and their biological activity as antimicrobial agents were investigated. The results showed that the crude extracts have biological activity against mold, yeast and bacteria. The preliminary GC–MS analysis reported that the fungal biomass and extracellular metabolites in the growth medium are industrial renewable resources of several biological compounds that could be used as antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral, anticancer, antioxidant, anti-trypanosomal and anti-inflammatory agents.

There is limited data from Arabic-speaking countries on risk factors for depression and anxiety during the COVID-19 pandemic. Country-specific data is necessary given differences in culture, demographics, and COVID-19 infection and mortality rates. The main purpose of the study is to identify the factors associated with symptoms of depression-anxiety in the adult population of Qatar during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. We conducted a cross-sectional online survey in Qatar between July and December 2020 after Qatar’s first COVID-19 wave and before the beginning of the second wave. Depression-anxiety was defined as a cut-off of 20 or higher on the Patient Health Questionnaire-Anxiety Depression Scale (PHQ-ADS). A biostimulant is any microorganism or substance used to enhance the efficiency of nutrition, tolerance to abiotic stress and/or quality traits of crops, depending on its contents from nutrients. Plant biostimulants like honey bee (HB) and silymarin (Sm) are a strategic trend for managing stressed crops by promoting nutritional and hormonal balance, regulating osmotic protectors, antioxidants, and genetic potential, reflecting plant growth and productivity. We applied diluted honey bee (HB) and silymarin-enriched honey bee (HB- Sm) as foliar nourishment to investigate their improving influences on growth, yield, nutritional and hormonal balance, various osmoprotectant levels, different components of antioxidant system, and genetic potential of chili pepper plants grown under NaCl-salinity stress (10 dS m‒1). HB significantly promoted the examined attributes and HB-Sm conferred optimal values, including growth, productivity, K+/Na+ ratio, capsaicin, and Sm contents. The antioxidative defense components were significantly better than those obtained with HB alone. Conversely, levels of oxidative stress markers (superoxide ions and hydrogen peroxide) and parameters related to membrane damage (malondialdehyde level, stability index, ionic leakage, Na+, and Cl− contents) were significantly reduced. HB-Sm significantly affects inactive gene expression, as a natural biostimulator silencing active gene expression. SCoT primers were used as proof in salt-treated or untreated chili pepper plants. There were 41 cDNA amplicons selected by SCoT-primers. Twenty of them were EcDNA amplicons (cDNA-amplicons that enhanced their genes by one or more treatments) representing 49% of all cDNA amplicons, whereas 7 amplicons for ScDNA (whose genes were silenced in one or more treatments) represented 17%, and 14 McDNA (monomorphic cDNA-amplicons with control) amplicons were represented by 34% from all cDNA amplicons. This indicates the high effect of BH-Sm treatments in expression enhancement of some inactive genes and their silenced effect for expression of some active genes, also confirming that cDNA-SCoT markers succeeded in detection of variable gene expression patterns between the untreated and treated plants. In conclusion, HB-Sm as a natural multi-biostimulator can attenuate salt stress effects in chili pepper plants by remodeling the antioxidant defense system and ameliorating plant productivity.

Background: Investigation for a naturally occurring anti-obesity drug has become the need of society all over the world. Betulinic acid (BA) is a lupane-type pentacyclic triterpene and is sourced from various organisms. This high potential biologically active molecule is reported to have anti-obesity effect. In this study, we report the molecular mechanism of action of BA that underlies anti-obesity activity and also an improved method of its isolation common teak tree. Methods: Mouse pre-adipocyte cells were used to develop hyperlipidemic conditions in vitro. Change in expression of genes associated to adipogenesis was checked using quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR). Co-factor specificity of PPAR gamma was analyzed through immune precipitation and immunoblot. Results: Betulinic acid was found to be effective in reducing the lipid content in 3T3L1 cells. Level of PPAR gamma and LXR alpha was reduced in connection to reduced adipogenesis. Change in steroid responsive co-activators (SRCs) during BA treatment proved that the compound can impart profound change in co-factor selectivity, which is crucial in determining the activity profile of PPAR gamma. BA treatment enhanced the SRC-1 interaction with PPAR gamma while reducing the levels of SRC-3. Conclusion: Present study has proved that betulinic acid, a promising candidate in anti-obesity drug development, has potential in regulating the activity of PPAR gamma through co-factor modulation. The Loranthus genus has been demonstrated to be used in the treatment of wide range of diseases e.g. diabetes, inflammations and cancers. Many species of Loranthus represent a major source of biologically active constituents. Therefore, our study was carried out to investigate the anti-diabetic, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects of Loranthus acaciae Zucc. (Loranthaceae) grown in Saudi Arabia. Moreover, our research concerned the guided-fractionation and isolation of possible active compounds from this species. The crude ethanolic extract and its n-hexane, chloroform and n-butanol fractions were investigated for antidiabetic activity utilizing two methods namely, in alloxan-induced diabetic rats and glucose tolerance test in normal rats. Additionally, the anti-inflammatory activity was studied by the carrageenan-induced rat paw oedema method while DPPH free radical scavenging and β-carotene bleaching assays were utilized to determine the antioxidant activity. Various chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques were utilized for the isolation and characterization of the active compounds. Our results exhibited that the crude extract and chloroform fraction has the greatest hypoglycemic and antidiabetic effects. The chloroform fraction and crude extract produced at a dose of 500 mg/kg a significant hypoglycemic effect in diabetic rats with 47.0 and 33.6% reduction in blood sugar levels and in normoglycemic rats 35.6 and 35.4% respectively. A potent anti-inflammatory effect (67.2% at 500 mg/kg) was detected for the chloroform fraction. In addition, the chloroform fraction exhibited a high antioxidative and DPPH-radical inhibitory activity (85.4 and 88.3% respectively). The phytochemical analysis of L. acaciae led to the isolation and characterization of four compounds namely, quercetin 3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (compound 1), quercetin 3-O-β-(6-O-galloyl)-glucopyranoside (compound 2), (-) catechin (compound 3), and catechin 7-O-gallate (compound 4). Among these compounds quercetin 3-O-β-D- glucopyranoside, quercetin 3-O-β-(6-O-galloyl)-glucopyranoside and catechin 7-O-gallate, are isolated for the first time from this plant. Adolescents in Qatar have some of the highest levels of inactivity and gender inequality in physical activity (PA) among all adolescents in the world. Contextual psychosocial influences remain unknown to date. The current study is a secondary analysis of 1,157 Qatari students (13 to 20 years of age) who completed a national cross-sectional survey. Males reported significantly higher daily PA than females (p < 0.0001) and increasing daily PA with personal importance for PA (p = 0.0140). However, compared to females, significantly higher proportion of daily active males were in the lowest level of self-efficacy (p = 0.0096), body shape satisfaction (p = 0.0003), likeness of body in pictures (p = 0.0011), and highest levels of psychological distress (p = 0.0313). Our results support positive association between adverse psychosocial constructs and daily PA in both genders; poor psychosocial profile was more pronounced among adolescent males. Future strategies aiming to increase PA should take into consideration these differences.

Introduction: Abundant literature has established the negative impact of traditional media on body image and disordered eating behaviors among young women. In the past few years, social media use has soared especially among youth, yet the influence of social media in relation to disordered eating has not been fully explored. The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between social media use and disordered eating outcomes among young Arab women. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out using a probability sample of 1,418 undergraduate female students living in Qatar, a rapidly developing nation in the Middle East. Popular social media platforms were assessed including Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, and Twitter. Other covariates assessed included body image, body mass index, and socioeconomic status. To assess the multivariate association between social media (main predictor or exposure variable), and disordered eating as measured by three levels of the 26-item Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26) (dependent variable), stepwise backward ordinal regression models were fit to the data. Data analysis was performed using Stata 14 software. Results: Findings confirmed that intensive use of social media, particularly Instagram, was positively associated with increased disordered eating behaviors among young women. Social media use intensity showed a significant association with increased disordered eating [(OR 1.207, SE (0.075), P < 0.01, 95% Confidential Interval [CI] 1.068 to 1.363)]. Among the four social media platforms measured, Instagram use had a significant association with disordered eating [OR 1.387, SE (0.186), P < 0.05, 95% CI 1.107 to 1.804)]. Discussion and Conclusions: This study highlights the significant role of social media on the behavior of young women, and supports the sociocultural theory linking media to disordered eating. Such an understanding of social media’s role is instrumental for the promotion and prevention of disordered eating among young women.
