Titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles have been extensively studied for catalyzing the photo-degradation of organic pollutants, the photocatalyst being nonselective to the substrate. We, however, found that TiO2 nanoparticles prepared via the sol-gel and hydrothermal synthetic routes each possess a definite specificity to the charge of the substrate for photodegradation. The nanoparticles were characterized by SEM, FTIR, XRD, TGA, and UV-visible spectra, and the photocatalytic degradation under UV-B (285 nm) irradiation of two model compounds, anionic methyl Orange (MO) and cationic methylene blue (MB) was monitored by a UV-visible spectrophotometer. Untreated sol-gel TiO2 nanoparticles (Tsg) preferentially degraded MO over MB (90% versus 40% in two hours), while after calcination at 400 °C for two hours (Tsgc) they showed reversed specificity (50% MO versus 90% MB in one hour). The as-prepared hydrothermal TiO2 nanoparticles (Tht) behaved in the opposite sense of Tsg (41% MO versus 91% MB degraded in one and a half hours); calcination at 400 °C (Thtc) did not reverse the trend but enhanced the efficiency of degradation. The study indicates that TiO2 nanoparticles can be made to degrade a specific class of organic pollutants from an effluent facilitating the recycling of a specific class of pollutants for cost-effective effluent management.

Enzyme activity is influenced by a large number of factors. Environmental conditions such as pH, temperature, salt concentration, substrate concentration, activators, and inhibitors may change the three dimensional shape of an enzyme, altering its rate of activity and/or its ability to bind substrate. The effects of such environmental factors were evaluated. The optimum pH and temperature of the purified urease were 7.2 and 48°C, respectively, using urea as substrate. The optimum substrate (urea) concentration for urease was 25 mM. The enzyme showed the highest activity when incubated for 30 min at 480C. EDTA, a metal chelator, decreased the enzyme activity significantly. This may be due to the removal of metal ions located on or near the active site. Divalent cations like Ba2+ and Mg2+ slightly stimulated the enzyme at a concentration of 1-3 mM whereas Na+ and K+ produced little or no effect on the activity. Ca2+ enhanced urease activity by 120.47%, while Pb2+, Cu2+, Zn2+ and Hg2+ almost completely inhibited the urease activity.

Metal ions play vital roles in enzymes. They may also show sensitivity to various sulfhydryl reagents and chelating reagents. Effect of some metal ions, EDTA and sulfhydryl reagents on the activity of partially purified β-amylase of radish root were studied. Amylolytic activity of purified enzyme was increased substantially in the presence of Ca2+, Mg2+, and Zn2+. Some other divalent cations Cu2+, Pb2+, Sn2+, and Hg2+ almost completely ceased the enzyme activity. Cobalt (II), Manganese (II), and Iron (III) exhibited moderate activating effects on the activity. Of the monovalent cations, Na+ and Ag+ reduced the β-amylase activity, while K+ increased. The chelating agent EDTA was found to be effective in the enzyme. Sulfhydryl reagents, Iodoacetic acid and N-Ethylmaleimide showed marginal inhibitory effect, but p-hydroxymercuribenzoic acid (PCMB) almost completely stopped the enzyme activity. The addition of thiol compounds such as cysteine could reverse the inhibitory effect of heavy metals and PCMB. The results indicate that sulfhydryl groups of radish root β-amylase were essential for the activity although it is not clear whether the sulfhydryl groups were directly involved in catalysis.

Background: Wearing masks or personal protective equipment (PPE) has become an integral part of the occupational life of physicians due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Most physicians have been developing various health hazards related to the use of different protective gears. This study aimed to determine the burden and spectrum of various health hazards associated with using masks or PPE and their associated risk factors. Methods: This cross-sectional survey was conducted in Dhaka Medical College from March 01–May 30, 2021, among physicians from different public hospitals in Dhaka, Bangladesh. We analyzed the responses of 506 physicians who completed case record forms through Google forms or hard copies. Findings: The mean (SD) age of the respondents was 35.4 [7.7], and 69.4% were men. Approximately 40% were using full PPE, and 55% were using N-95 masks. A total of 489 (96.6%) patients experienced at least one health hazard. The reported severe health hazards were syncope, severe dyspnea, severe chest pain, and anaphylaxis. Headache, dizziness, mood irritation, chest pain, excessive sweating, panic attack, and permanent facial disfigurement were the minor health hazards reported. Extended periods of work in the COVID-19-unit, reuse of masks, diabetes, obesity, and mental stress were risk factors for dyspnea. The risk factors for headaches were female sex, diabetes, and previous primary headaches. Furthermore, female sex and reusing masks for an extended period (> 6 h) were risk factors for facial disfigurement. The risk factors for excessive sweating were female sex and additional evening office practice for an extended period. Conclusions: Healthcare workers experienced several occupational hazards after using masks and PPE. Therefore, an appropriate policy is required to reduce such risks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Segments of conjugated polymers display the propensity to aggregate in solutions with common organic solvents. Here we revealed that the segmental aggregation of a conjugated polymer, poly(9,9-bis(2-ethylhexyl)fluorene-2,7-diyl), (PF2/6), in toluene was stabilized by the polymer−solvent complex formation through π−π stacking induction of solvent molecules and polymer segments. In this case, a portion of the solvent was trapped inside the aggregate domains upon bringing the system to the subambient temperatures. The residence time of these associated solvent molecules became long enough to yield a separate upfield-shifted NMR resonance. The line-shape of this resonance revealed alignment of the polymer segments in the aggregates. A portion of the solvent was frozen in the compact structure due to the formation of strong polymer−solvent complex. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The structure of poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene-2,7-diyl) (PF8) in deuterated toluene solutions at concentrations ranging from 0.60% to 7.0% (w/v) has been investigated by means of small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. PF8 chains exhibited aggregation above 1.0%, where the corresponding SANS profiles were characterized by the superposition of an aggregate component and a dynamic component associated with the transient network formed by interchain overlap. The 1H NMR resonance lines for both the polymer as well as for the residual protons in the solvent showed large upfield shift at higher concentrations, indicating strong polymer−solvent interaction. At a higher concentration (4.5%) an additional resonance line was observed in the aromatic regions of both the 1H and the 2H spectra that has been attributed to a residual anisotropic chemical shift of the solvent molecules. The later phenomenon is suggestive of the existence of magnetically anisotropic aggregate domains of PF8 dispersed in an isotropic bulk. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Trehalose serves as a stress protectant and/or reserve carbohydrate in a variety of organisms including bacteria, yeast, and invertebrates. Recently, trace amounts of trehalose have been detected in higher plants, although the function of trehalose in plants remains unknown. A cDNA clone (OsTPP1) encoding a putative trehalose-6-phosphate phosphatase (TPP) for trehalose biosynthesis was isolated from rice. Functionality of the clone was demonstrated by complementation of a yeast mutant and enzymatic activity of the recombinant protein. Northern blots revealed that the OsTPP1 transcript levels were fairly low or under detectable limits in most of the tissues under ambient conditions but were highly induced within 1–2 h of chilling stress (12 °C) in both root and shoot tissues of seedlings. This induction was transient and disappeared after 6 h of the chilling stress. Transient expression of OsTPP1 was also induced under severe chilling stress (4 °C) as well as salinity and drought stresses at ambient temperatures. Application of exogenous ABA (50 μM) resulted in a transient increase of OsTPP1 expression within 20 min of the treatment, thereby suggesting involvement of ABA in OsTPP1 gene regulation. Measurements of total cellular TPP activity and trehalose content in roots indicated that both TPP activity and trehalose levels were transiently increased after chilling (12 °C) stress. Collectively, the data indicate that transient activation of trehalose biosynthesis is involved in early chilling stress response in rice. After long-term aging, surfactant-mediated colloidal aggregates of sulfonated polyaniline (S-PANI) and poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVF 2) converted into three-dimensional polymer networks, whereas colloidal crystals prepared from pure PVF 2 remained unaltered. A model, where the surfactant tails anchored from the colloidal particles interdigitate with time resulting in coalescence of the particles to form the network morphology, has been proposed. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed higher relative abundances of carbon atoms on the surface of the polymer networks than those of the colloidal aggregates, which adequately supports the proposed model. 3D food printing sectors require comprehensive knowledge on viscoelastic and mechanical properties of diverse food materials in order to effectively utilize them in rapid and customized 3D production for supply and manufacturing chains. In this work, we present mechanical and rheological properties of Agar and Konjac based edible gels at different Agar and Konjac weight ratio and discuss their 3D printing performance. Gel samples with higher Konjac content positively contributed to the viscoelastic properties of the gel samples which in return has been found viable for extrusion-based 3D printing. By choosing appropriate printing parameters, different shapes are printed to demonstrate printing resolution. We expect, this study will add potential scope for evaluating and optimizing soft-gel materials for 3D food printing sector.

Autotoxicity in some ornamentals was investigated. The plants were grown by hydroponics with or without the addition of activated charcoal (AC) to the nutrient solution. The AC was used to trap the exuded organics from roots. Among the 37 plants under study, growth of lily, prairie gentian, corn poppy, farewell-to-spring, rocket larkspur, and carnation was drastically reduced in the absence of AC compared with those in the presence of AC in the nutrient solution. Root exudates of some plants were analyzed and several organic compounds were detected. The strong growth inhibitors such as lactic acid in pot marigold, benzoic and p-hydroxybenzoic acid in lily, o-hydroxyphenylacetic acid in rocket larkspur, benzoic and p-hydroxybenzoic acid in sweet pea, and maleic and benzoic acid in prairie gentian were detected in the root exudates. The reduced growth of prairie gentian after prolonged cultivation in a field might be avoided by amending the soil with AC at a rate of 60 kg·10a-1. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Visible-light-driven C-C bond formation utilizing ketyl radical (C ketyl ) species has attracted increasing attention recently, as it provides a direct route for the synthesis of complex molecules. However, the most-developed homogeneous photocatalytic systems for the generation and utilization of ketyl radicals usually entail noble metal-based (e. g., Ru and Ir) photosensitizers, which suffer from not only high cost but also potential degradation and hence pose challenges in product separation and purification. In contrast, readily accessible, inexpensive, and recyclable semiconductors represent a class of attractive and alternative photocatalysts but remain much less explored for photocatalytic ketyl radical initiated C-C bond formation. This work demonstrates that a wide range of industrially important chemicals, including substituted chromanes and tertiary alcohols, can be produced on ZnIn 2 S 4 under visible light irradiation through intramolecular cyclization (C ketyl -C sp2 ) and intermolecular cross-coupling (C ketyl -C sp3 ) reactions, respectively, using ketyl radicals. A suite of experimental studies aided by computational investigation were carried out to shed light on the mechanistic insights of these two types of ketyl radical initiated C-C coupling reactions on ZnIn 2 S 4 ., (© 2023 The Authors. Knowledge of heterogeneous etiology and pathophysiology of schizophrenia (SZP) is reasonably inadequate and non-deterministic due to its inherent complexity and underlying vast dynamics related to genetic mechanisms. The evolution of large-scale transcriptome-wide datasets and subsequent development of relevant, robust technologies for their analyses show promises toward elucidating the genetic basis of disease pathogenesis, its early risk prediction, and predicting drug molecule targets for therapeutic intervention. In this research, we have scrutinized the genetic basis of SZP through functional annotation and network-based system biology approaches. We have determined 96 overlapping differentially expressed genes (DEGs) from 2 microarray datasets and subsequently identified their interconnecting networks to reveal transcriptome signatures like hub proteins (FYN, RAD51, SOCS3, XIAP, AKAP13, PIK3C2A, CBX5, GATA3, EIF3K, and CDKN2B), transcription factors and miRNAs. In addition, we have employed gene set enrichment to highlight significant gene ontology (e.g., positive regulation of microglial cell activation) and relevant pathways (such as axon guidance and focal adhesion) interconnected to the genes associated with SZP. Background: Aromatherapy is a traditional practice of employing essential oils for therapeutic purposes, which is currently headed under the category of complementary and adjuvant medicine., Objective: The aim of this review is to summarize the potential health benefits of aromatic essential oil from old times till the present. Moreover, some mechanisms which can be utilized as a basis for aromatherapy in cancer and cancer-linked complications have been proposed., Methods: To find out the relevant and authentic data, several search engines like Science direct, Pubmed, research gate, etc. were thoroughly checked by inserting keywords like aromatherapy, complementary, and adjuvant therapy in the context of the review., Results: The results depicted the anti-cancer potential of chemical constituents of essential oil against different types of cancer. Background: Mosquito coil (MC) emits insecticide upon burning which provides limited protection against lethal mosquito borne diseases. However, apart from killing the insect, toxicities associated with the inhalation of these insecticides poses severe health hazards. However, the use of MC is increasing day by day in third world countries in particular but, yet to receive enough attention of both policy maker and general public. The current study was aimed to assess the MC smoke induced damage of pulmonary and hepatic tissues along with observing the alterations of several blood biochemical parameters in mice model., Methods: A total of twenty four Swiss albino mice were allowed to inhale the smoke of allethrin based MC at different duration per day for 120 days. By the end of treatment period, blood sample was drawn from each mouse and blood biochemical parameters including alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate transaminase (AST), blood urea nitrogen(BUN), serum total protein, cholesterol, low density lipoprotein (LDL) and triglyceride (TG) were analyzed. Intact lung and liver were collected for histological analysis using standard protocol., Results: Biochemical study indicates elevated activity of two hepatic enzymes: ALT (89%), AST (85%), in comparison with the respective control. Increased level of some parameters of lipid profile including cholesterol (36%), LDL (48%) and triglyceride (30%) in smoke inhaled mice is the new finding of this study. On the contrary, the activity of serum total protein and BUN was decreased by 20% and 24%, respectively in inhaled mice. Pulmonary tissue of treated mice shows severe forms of emphysema and hyperplasia, especially in the peripheral region of lung, which is the hallmark of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Histological study of hepatic tissue shows apoptosis mediated damage of hepatocytes along with severe form of necrosis. Infiltration of Inflammatory cells was also observed in both of the organs., Conclusion: Results from the present studies suggest that chronic exposure of allethrin based MC is responsible factor for severe health complications such as COPD due to the alterations of the key biochemical parameters of blood and histo-organization of lung and liver.

The goal of this study was to quantify and demonstrate the dynamic effects of hydraulic retention time (HRT), organic carbon and various components of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) produced by microorganisms on the performance of submersed hollow-fiber microfiltration (MF) membrane in a hybrid powdered activated carbon (PAC)-MF membrane bioreactor (MBR). The reactors were operated continuously for 45 days to treat surface (river) water before and after pretreatment using a biofiltration unit. The real-time levels of organic carbon and the major components of EPS including five different carbohydrates (D(+) glucose and D(+) mannose, D(+) galactose, N-acetyl-D-galactosamine and D-galactose, oligosaccharides and L(-) fucose), proteins, and polysaccharides were quantified in the influent water, foulants, and in the bulk phases of different reactors. The presence of PAC extended the filtration cycle and enhanced the organic carbon adsorption and removal more than two fold. Biological filtration improved the filtrate quality and decreased membrane fouling. However, HRT influenced the length of the filtration cycle and had less effect on organic carbon and EPS component removal and/or biodegradation. The abundance of carbohydrates in the foulants on MF surfaces was more than 40 times higher than in the bulk phase, which demonstrates that the accumulation of carbohydrates on membrane surfaces contributed to the increase in transmembrane pressure significantly and PAC was not a potential adsorbent of carbohydrates. The abundance of N-acetyl-d-galactosamine and d-galactose was the highest in the foulants on membranes receiving biofilter-treated river water. Most of the biological fouling compounds were produced inside the reactors due to biodegradation. PAC inside the reactor enhanced the biodegradation of polysaccharides up to 97% and that of proteins by more than 95%.
