Parameters representing leaf photosynthetic capacity, namely, the maximal carboxylation rate (Vcmax), maximal electron transport rate (Jmax), and triose phosphate-utilization rate (Tp), can vary depending on various factors. The present study investigated diurnal variations in Vcmax, Jmax, and Tp of uppermost leaves of soil-grown, well-watered eggplant in a greenhouse based on the simultaneous measurements of leaf gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence. The values of net photosynthetic rates and electron transport rates plotted against intercellular CO2 concentrations were noticeably higher in the morning than in the afternoon. Significant differences were detected among the values of Vcmax, Jmax, and Tp obtained at different times of day (08:30, 11:00, 13:30, and 16:00 h). All three parameters tended to decline as the time of day advanced; compared to the values at 08:30 h, Vcmax, Jmax, and Tp declined by approximately 15% at 16:00 h. Among the three parameters, Tp appeared to be the most sensitive to time.

We studied the effects of leaf wetting on midday depression of photosynthesis regarding plant water balance and leaf morphological traits. The plants without leaf wetting showed a significant reduction in midday photosynthesis with a concomitant decrease with leaf conductance, because of lower leaf water potential (-1.3 MPa) due to excessive transpiration water loss. However, midday depression was not observed in the plants with leaf wetting. Lower contact angle between leaf surface and water droplet showed that tomato leaves have lower water repellency. However, water on the leaf surface completely dried within 20 min indicating that effect of water coverage on stomata for CO2 uptake was small. In addition, leaf wetting significantly decreased evaporative demands, which contributed to maintaining appropriate water balance and avoided midday stomatal closure, and it contributed to mitigation of midday depression of photosynthesis.

We fabricated Co-based catalysts by the low-temperature thermal decomposition of R-Co intermetallics (R = Y, La, or Ce) to reduce the temperature of ammonia cracking for hydrogen production. The catalysts synthesized are nanocomposites of Co/RO x with a metal-rich composition. In the Co 13 /LaO 1.5 catalyst derived from LaCo 13 , Co nanoparticles of 10-30 nm size are enclosed by the LaO 1.5 matrix. The nanocomposite exhibited superior catalytic activity (91% at 500 °C), which was attributed to dual advantages; the low workfunction of the supporter, O-deficient LaO 1.5-x nanoparticles, promotes electron donation to the Co catalyst in the interface, which leads to enhanced N-H bond dissociation. Moreover, such a composite structure is effective in suppressing the grain growth of Co nanoparticles because the LaO 1.5 layer works as a diffusion barrier against Co. The thermal decomposition of intermetallics is a new route for the facile synthesis of catalysts having an electronically active support.

Endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS)-guided ethanol injection (EI) has recently been introduced as one of the management strategies for pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms (PNENs); however, its role as a surgical alternative is unclear. We evaluated the efficacy and safety of EUS-EI in treating small PNENs through a prospective multicenter study.Patients with grade 1 tumors of ≤15 mm confirmed by pathology were included. The primary end point assessed efficacy and safety, measuring complete ablation using computed tomography at 1 and 6 months, prevention of adverse events (AEs) within 1 month, severe pancreatic fistula at 1 month, and incidence/worsening of diabetes mellitus (DM) at 6 months. The composite end point of EUS-EI was compared with that of historical results of a study based on surgical treatment.25 patients with PNENs, with a median tumor size of 10.1 mm, were treated using EUS-EI. The composite primary end point was achieved by 76.0% of patients (19/25; 95%CI 54.9%-90.6%), a proportion significantly higher than that of surgical treatment ( P = 0.008). Regarding efficacy, 88.0% (22/25) of patients achieved complete ablation at 1 and 6 months (95%CI 68.8%-97.5%). Regarding safety, 96.0% (24/25) of patients had no severe AEs within 1 month (95%CI 79.7%-99.9%). Background: Gastrointestinal subepithelial lesions (SELs) range from benign to malignant. Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)-guided fine-needle biopsy (EUS-FNB) is used widely for pathological diagnosis of SELs. Early diagnosis and treatment are important because all Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) have some degree of malignant potential. Diagnosing SELs with EUS-FNB is more difficult than diagnosing other tumors because an accurate diagnosis of GIST requires a sufficient tissue sample for immunostaining, which is part of the diagnostic protocol. Moreover, EUS-FNB is less accurate for diagnosis based on samples from SELs measuring ≤ 2 cm. However, our retrospective study showed that more than 50% of patients with SELs ≤ 2 cm were diagnosed as GIST. Therefore, EUS-FNB needles are required with adequate sampling in SELs measuring ≤ 2 cm. Previously, we conducted a retrospective single-center study of SELs measuring ≤ 2 cm, and reported that EUS-FNB with a Fork-tip needle was superior to that with a Franseen needle in that the former acquires sufficient sample. This multicenter comparative open-label superiority study is designed to verify whether a 22G Fork-tip needle is superior to a 22G Franseen needle with respect to sample acquisition., Methods/design: Present study will randomly assign for 110 patients (55 in the Fork-tip needle group and 55 in the Franseen needle group) with SELs measuring ≤ 2 cm, all of whom are managed at one of the 10 participating endoscopic centers. The primary endpoint evaluates the superiority of a 22G Fork-tip needle over a 22G Franseen needle for collection of an adequate tissue specimen at the first puncture. The secondary endpoints compare successful puncture rate, procedure completion rate, number of adverse events, diagnostic suitability of the first puncture specimen for GIST, and the number of punctures required until adequate specimen collection., Discussion: The outcomes may provide insight into the optimal needle choice for diagnosis of SELs ≤ 2 cm, thereby aiding development of practice guidelines. Background and Aims: Perforation is a rare but serious adverse event associated with endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). There is no consensus to guide clinicians in the management of ERCP-related duodenal perforations, making it difficult to determine whether surgical or endoscopic treatment is optimal. The present study retrospectively evaluated the characteristics and clinical outcomes of patients who experienced ERCP-related duodenal perforations according to the mechanism of injury., Methods: This study evaluated the incidence of ERCP-related duodenal perforations among the 51,957 patients who underwent ERCP at 21 tertiary care hospitals in Japan between April 2017 and March 2022. ERCP-related duodenal perforations were categorized according to the Stapfer classification system. Serious adverse events, length of stay (LOS), and mortality associated with ERCP-related duodenal perforations were evaluated according to the mechanism of injury, time of diagnosis, and treatment modality., Results: Of the 51,957 patients who underwent ERCP, 58 (0.12%) experienced ERCP-related duodenal perforations. The mean LOS was 27.1 days and the mortality rate was 2%. LOS (P = 0.031) and time to healing (P = 0.009) were significantly shorter in patients who underwent endoscopic than surgical treatment. Multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that endoscopic treatment (P = 0.017) and intraprocedural diagnosis (P = 0.019) were independently associated with a good clinical course., Conclusions: Diagnosing a perforation during the ERCP procedure can prevent serious complications. Fluoroscopic and endoscopic images should be carefully reviewed. Background: Serum amylase (AMY) levels measured 2-6 h after ERCP are a predictor of post-ERCP pancreatitis (PEP). Trypsin is one of the pancreatic enzymes elevated in the development of PEP. The study assessed whether serum trypsin (TRY) can predict early-stage PEP., Methods: This prospective study included patients who underwent ERCP from June 2022 to May 2023. TRY, AMY, serum pancreatic AMY (P-AMY), and serum lipase (LIP) levels were measured immediately after ERCP and 2 h later. The primary outcome was the diagnostic abilities of TRY levels measured immediately (0 h-TRY) and 2 h after (2 h-TRY) ERCP to predict PEP (compared with the other serum pancreatic enzymes)., Results: Of 130 patients analyzed, 18 developed PEP. The sensitivity and specificity of 0 h-TRY were 83.3% and 69.6%, respectively, and those of 2 h-TRY were 88.9% and 72.3%, respectively. The area under the curve (AUC) for 0 h-TRY was significantly higher than that for 0 h-AMY (p = .006) and 0 h-P-AMY (p = .012), whereas the AUCs for 0 h-TRY and 0 h-LIP did not differ significantly (p = .563). The AUC for 2 h-TRY for predicting PEP was significantly higher than that for 2 h-AMY (p = .025), whereas there was no significant differences between the AUCs for 2 h-TRY and 2 h-P-AMY(p = .146), or between those for 2 h-TRY and 2 h-LIP (p = .792). Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) may result in long-term mental health complications, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). ACEs are known to be more frequent among military personnel, despite their need to maintain their mental health to accomplish their missions. Self-compassion, or treating oneself with kindness and understanding, can mitigate the psychological effects of adversity but is also affected by adversity. This cross-sectional study aimed to identify the complex relationships between ACEs, self-compassion, and PTSD symptoms among 752 new recruits of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force, of whom 537 with ACEs completed the PTSD Checklist for DSM-5. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis was used to examine the independent effect of self-compassion, measured using the Self-Compassion Scale, on PTSD symptoms. Mediation effect analysis with self-compassion as a mediator was conducted on the relationship between ACEs and PTSD symptoms. We confirmed high levels of ACEs among our participants compared to a healthy population of a previous study, and approximately 6% presented PTSD symptoms above a threshold. Self-compassion was significantly negatively associated with PTSD symptoms (β = -.22, 95% confidence interval [CI], -.34 to -.11). Mediation effect analysis revealed that self-compassion partially mediated the relationship between ACEs and PTSD symptoms, explaining 6.9% of this effect, and ACEs were negatively associated with self-compassion (β = -.13, 95% CI, -.22 to -.04). These findings suggested that self-compassion is a protective factor against PTSD symptoms, whereas ACEs can decrease self-compassion. Tracheal reconstruction is necessary in patients with large tracheal defects. Previously, artificial tracheae made of polypropylene and collagen sponge have been used clinically by our group. As a basic research aimed at promoting epithelialization for infection defense, we transplanted cell sheets of human induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC)-derived airway epithelial cells (iAECs) with artificial tracheae into tracheal defects of rats and confirmed their engraftment. In this study, we examined the difference in the cell engraftment between hiPSC-derived airway epithelial progenitor cells (iAEPCs) and iAECs. Cell sheets were collected on days 38, 45, and 56 of induction into iAECs, then transplanted into nude rats with tracheal defects along with the artificial trachea. Two weeks after transplantation, surviving human nuclear antigen (HNA)-positive epithelial cells were observed none of six rats in the 38-day group, two out of six in 45-day group, and five out of six in the 56-day group. The proportion of surviving HNA+ cells among the epithelial cells of 56-day group was significantly higher those of 38-day group. Differentiated iAECs are more suitable for the transplantation of hiPSCs into tracheal defects. Our findings propose the use of differentiated cells for improvement of engraftment efficiency.

Background and Aims: EUS-guided hepaticogastrostomy (EUS-HGS) carries a risk of serious adverse events (AEs). A newly designed, partially covered laser-cut stent with antimigration anchoring hooks and a thin tapered tip (7.2F), called a Hook stent (Zeon Medical, Tokyo, Japan), has been developed to prevent serious AEs associated with EUS-HGS. The present prospective multicenter clinical trial evaluated the efficacy and safety of the Hook stent for EUS-HGS after failure of ERCP in patients with unresectable malignant biliary obstruction., Methods: The primary endpoint was the rate of clinical success, and secondary endpoints were the rates of technical success, AEs, recurrent biliary obstruction (RBO), procedure success without using a tract dilation device, reintervention for RBO, time to RBO, and overall survival (OS)., Results: Thirty-eight patients underwent EUS-HGS using the Hook stent. The technical and clinical success rates in patients undergoing EUS-HGS were 100% and 92.1%, respectively. The procedure success rate without using a tract dilation device was 94.7%. Four patients (10.5%) developed early AEs, but there were no severe AEs such as stent migration. RBO developed in 26.3% of patients. Reintervention for RBO had a 100% success rate. The median time to RBO was not reached, and the median OS was 191 days., Conclusions: EUS-HGS using the Hook stent demonstrated a high clinical success rate, low rate of early AEs, and an acceptable stent patency. The Hook stent is safe and feasible for use in patients undergoing EUS-HGS. The consensus-based TOKYO criteria were proposed as a standardized reporting system for endoscopic transpapillary biliary drainage. The primary objective was to address issues arising from the inconsistent reporting of stent outcomes across studies, which has complicated the comparability and interpretation of study results. However, the original TOKYO criteria were not readily applicable to recent modalities of endoscopic biliary drainage such as biliary drainage based on endoscopic ultrasound or device-assisted endoscopy. There are increasing opportunities for managing hilar biliary obstruction and benign biliary strictures through endoscopic drainage. Biliary ablation has been introduced to manage benign and malignant biliary strictures. In addition, the prolonged survival times of cancer patients have increased the importance of evaluating overall outcomes during the period requiring endoscopic biliary drainage rather than solely focusing on the patency of the initial stent. Recognizing these unmet needs, a committee has been established within the Japan Gastroenterological Endoscopy Society to revise the TOKYO criteria for current clinical practice. The revised criteria propose not only common reporting items for endoscopic biliary drainage overall, but also items specific to various conditions and interventions. The term "stent-demanding time" has been defined to encompass the entire duration of endoscopic biliary drainage, during which the overall stent-related outcomes are evaluated. Objectives: Among subepithelial lesions (SELs), gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) should be identified and surgically treated at an early stage. However, it is difficult to diagnose SELs smaller than 20 mm. In recent years, endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) elastography (EUS-EG) and contrast-enhanced harmonic EUS (CH-EUS) have been reported to be useful for the diagnosis of SELs, although the diagnostic accuracy of a combination of EUS techniques with image enhancement is unknown., Methods: Patients with SELs who underwent EUS-guided tissue acquisition, EUS shear-wave elastography (EUS-SWE), EUS strain elastography (EUS-SE), and CH-EUS from January 2019 to June 2023 were enrolled. To assess the diagnostic accuracy for differentiating GISTs from other SELs, shear-wave velocity on EUS-SWE, the strain ratio on EUS-SE, and vascularity on CH-EUS were determined and their diagnostic accuracies were compared., Results: Forty-three patients were enrolled. When the cut-off value was set at 3.27 m/s, the sensitivity, specificity, and diagnostic accuracy of shear-wave velocity were 28.6%, 86.2%, and 34.9%, respectively. When the cut-off value was set at 3.79, the sensitivity, specificity, and diagnostic accuracy of the strain ratio were 93.1%, 64.3%, and 83.7%, respectively. The sensitivity, specificity, and diagnostic accuracy of CH-EUS were 79.3%, 92.3%, and 83.7%, respectively. When EUS-SE was combined with CH-EUS, the sensitivity and diagnostic accuracy were the highest among binary combinations of image enhancement modalities., Conclusions: EUS-SE and CH-EUS are useful for differentiating GISTs from other SELs. Coronary artery involvements occur rarely both during cardiac repair and in the late period after surgery, and it may result in myocardial ischaemia and infarction. We present six cases who underwent percutaneous transluminal coronary balloon angioplasty for coronary artery stenosis in the late period after surgery. The patients included four boys and two girls. Post-operative states involving anomalous origin of the left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery and d-transposition of the great arteries were observed in two patients each. Two patients with univentricular heart had coronary artery injuries during surgery. The age at the angioplasty ranged from 1 month to 14 years, with a median of 3 years. The interval from the operation to angioplasty ranged from 37 days to 14 years (median 8 months). The interval from the angioplasty to follow-up coronary angiography ranged from 2 months to 14 years (median 11 months). The follow-up period ranged from 2 months to 20 years (median 8 years). One patient underwent a stent implantation because of post-procedure recoil. Coronary artery stenosis improved immediately after procedure in the six patients without complication, and restenosis occurred post-procedure in one patient. Five patients had no cardiac events. Although the angioplasty's initial effect may not be dramatic, it can improve late after the procedure. It was considered that the optimal balloon-reference vessel ratio to obtain a minimal effective lumen diameter was about 1.0. Angioplasty post-surgery for CHD in children was feasible and without complications.

Interventional endoscopic ultrasonography/endosongraphy (I-EUS) procedures have rapidly evolved since their introduction three decades ago; however, the classification and terminology for these procedures remain unstandardized. To address this, the Subcommittee for Terminology of I-EUS in the Japan Gastroenterological Endoscopy Society was established to define classifications and a glossary of I-EUS terms. They categorized I-EUS procedures into five types based on purpose and method: (i) EUS-guided sampling; (ii) EUS-guided through-the-needle examination; (iii) EUS-guided drainage/anastomosis (EUS-D/A); (iv) trans-endosonographically/EUS-guided created route (ESCR) procedures; and (v) EUS-guided delivery. EUS-guided sampling includes tissue acquisition and fluid sampling, classified by needle type into fine needle aspiration and fine needle biopsy. Through-the-needle examinations include imaging, measurements, and biopsies. EUS-D/A includes organ drainage/anastomosis, fluid collection drainage, and digestive tract anastomosis. In the EUS-D/A route, "anastomosis" is used for organ-to-organ procedures, whereas "tract" is for fluid drainage. ESCR is a newly proposed term for procedures via anastomosis or tract, such as endoscopic necrosectomy and EUS-guided antegrade stenting. The term "trans-luminal drainage/anastomosis stent" is used for stents that maintain the ESCR rather than treating strictures. EUS-guided delivery involves the delivery of substances, such as fluids, drugs, medical devices, and energy. Objective: To elucidate the local microcirculation of the infrapatellar fat pad (IFP) in patients with knee osteoarthritis (KOA) by determining the changes in IFP hardness and hemoglobin concentration during isometric quadriceps exercise (IQE)., Design: In this observational cross-sectional study, patients diagnosed with bilateral KOA were included in the KOA group (30 knees), healthy older adults in the control group (20 knees), and younger adults in the young group (20 knees). Ultrasonography was performed at rest and during IQE to measure IFP hardness based on shear wave velocity. Near-infrared spectroscopy was performed to measure oxygenated hemoglobin (O2Hb), deoxygenated hemoglobin (HHb), and total hemoglobin (cHb) in the IFP before (Baseline), during (IQE task), and after IQE (Post). IFP hardness and O2Hb, HHb, and cHb concentration were analyzed using a linear mixed model for the groups and measurement points., Results: During IQE, IFP hardness changes were significantly less in the KOA group than in the other groups (KOA: 95 % confidence intervals (CIs) [-0.854, 0.028]; control: 95 % CI [-0.941, -0.341]; and young: 95 % CI [-2.305, -1.706]). Background: Few studies have compared endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)-guided hepaticogastrostomy (HGS) with EUS-guided antegrade metal stent placement (AGMS). The purpose of this study was to compare times to recurrent biliary obstruction (TRBO) in patients who underwent HGS using metal stents (MS) and those who underwent AGMS keeping access routes with plastic stents (AGMS-AR)., Methods: This study retrospectively evaluated consecutive patients who underwent HGS or AGMS between September 2016 and December 2022. TRBO, overall survival (OS), and adverse event (AE) rates were compared in the two groups. The risk factors for RBO were determined using a multivariable Cox proportional hazards model., Results: This study included 32 patients in the HGS group and 30 in the AGMS-AR group. Technical success rate was significantly higher in the HGS than in the AGMS-AR group (100 vs. 80%; P = 0.009). The technical success rate without tract dilation was significantly higher in the AGMS-AR than in the HGS group (83 vs. 38%; P < 0.001). RBO rates were significantly higher in the HGS than in the AGMS-AR group (53 vs. 17%; P = 0.024), whereas AE rates did not differ significantly. TRBO differed significantly in the HGS and AGMS-AR groups (159 days vs. not reached, P = 0.011), whereas OS did not differ significantly. 2D heterostructuring is a versatile methodology for designing nanoarchitecture catalytic systems that allow for reconstruction and modulation of interfaces and electronic structures. However, catalysts with such structures are extremely scarce due to limited synthetic strategies. Here, a highly ordered 2D Ru/Si/Ru/Si… nano-heterostructures (RSHS) is reported by acid etching of the LaRuSi electride. RSHS shows a superior electrocatalytic activity for hydrogen evolution with an overpotential of 14 mV at 10 mA cm -2 in alkaline media. Both experimental analyses and first-principles calculations demonstrate that the electronic states of Ru can be tuned by strong interactions of the interfacial Ru-Si, leading to an optimized hydrogen adsorption energy. Moreover, due to the synergistic effect of Ru and Si, the energy barrier of water dissociation is significantly reduced. Metabolic homeostasis is maintained by redundant pathways to ensure adequate nutrient supply during fasting and other stresses. These pathways are regulated locally in tissues and systemically via the liver, kidney, and circulation. Here, we characterize how serine, glycine, and one-carbon (SGOC) metabolism fluxes across the eye, liver, and kidney sustain retinal amino acid levels and function. Individuals with macular telangiectasia (MacTel), an age-related retinal disease with reduced circulating serine and glycine, carrying deleterious alleles in SGOC metabolic enzymes exhibit an exaggerated reduction in circulating serine. A Phgdh +/ - mouse model of this haploinsufficiency experiences accelerated retinal defects upon dietary serine/glycine restriction, highlighting how otherwise silent haploinsufficiencies can impact retinal health. We demonstrate that serine-associated retinopathy and peripheral neuropathy are reversible, as both are restored in mice upon serine supplementation. Approximately 60% of pancreatic cancers occur in the pancreatic head and may present as obstructive jaundice due to bile duct invasion. Obstructive jaundice often leads to poor general conditions and acute cholangitis, interfering with surgery and chemotherapy and requiring biliary drainage. The first choice of treatment for biliary drainage is the endoscopic transpapillary approach. In unresectable tumors, self-expandable metal stents (SEMSs) are most commonly used and are classified into uncovered and covered SEMSs. Recently, antireflux metal stents and large- or small-diameter SEMSs have become commercially available, and their usefulness has been reported. Plastic stents are infrequently used in patients with resectable biliary obstruction; however, owing to the recent trend in preoperative chemotherapy, SEMSs are frequently used because of the long time to recurrent biliary obstruction. Endoscopic ultrasound-guided biliary drainage (EUS-BD) is often performed in patients who are not eligible for the transpapillary approach, and favorable outcomes have been reported. Different EUS-BD techniques and specialized stents have been developed and can be safely used in high-volume centers. The indications for EUS-BD are expected to further expand in the future.

Introduction: The "healthy warrior effect" (HWE), in which deployed military personnel are healthier than those not deployed, is known to be associated with deployment. However, the HWE associated with deployment to United Nations (UN) peacekeeping operations (PKO) has not been examined. This study examined the HWE associated with deployment to UN PKO by examining the impact of pre-deployment mental health on the likelihood of deployment and whether this difference persisted after deployment., Materials and Methods: This retrospective cohort study included 2,712 Japan Ground Self-Defense Forces personnel from four engineering units who consented to participate in annual mental health checks conducted between August and October 2015. The Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K6) was used to assess general psychological distress before and after deployment. Logistic regression analysis adjusted for age, sex, and rank was conducted with deployment as the dependent variable and the pre-deployment K6 total score as the independent variable. Additionally, a mixed-effects model was performed with K6 total scores as the dependent variable, time and deployment as fixed effect factors, and the individual as the random effect factor., Results: Of the participants, 254 were in the deployed group, and 2,458 were in the non-deployed group. The pre-deployment K6 total score was significantly lower (t = 5.2, P < .001) for the deployed group (0.67 ± 1.60) than for the non-deployed group (1.26 ± 2.41). Logistic regression analysis showed an odds ratio for the K6 total score before deployment as 0.87 (95% CI = 0.79-0.94). The mixed-effects model exhibited a significant negative main effect of being deployed (t = -5.1, P < .001) and a significant interaction effect between time and being deployed (t = -2.5, P = .012)., Conclusions: Psychologically healthier personnel were more likely to be deployed for UN PKO and their better mental health status persisted after deployment, reflecting the HWE. Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) and intraductal ultrasound (IDUS) play very important roles in the field of biliary tract disease. Because of their excellent spatial resolution, the detection of small lesions and T- or N-staging of tumors have become possible. Additionally, contrast-enhanced EUS and the new imaging technique of detective flow imaging are reported to be useful for differential diagnosis. Furthermore, EUS-guided tissue acquisition is used not only for pathological diagnosis but also to collect tissue samples for cancer genome profiling. This review provides an overview of diagnosis utilizing the features and techniques of EUS and IDUS.

The diagnosis or rare mesenchymal malignant lesions of the liver may be a challenge owing to the rarity of the disease and is usually made by histological confirmation. An ultrasound examination with, if required, color Doppler sonography and contrast-enhanced ultrasound, taking into account the clinical background of the patient, may help to focus the differential diagnosis. In this review, we describe the pathological and ultrasound features of several rare mesenchymal malignant liver lesions which include undifferentiated sarcoma of the liver, leiomyosarcoma, angiosarcoma, fibrosarcoma, liposarcoma, and epithelioid hemangioendothelioma.

Background and study aims The relative procedural performance of needles for endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration/biopsy (EUS-FNA/B) is unclear. The present study therefore compared six types of 22-gauge FNA/B needles using a bench simulator. Methods Resistance forces during needle puncture and removal, needle tip damage before and after procedure, leakage after puncture of mucinous cyst models, the shape of the puncture surface at the puncture site, amounts of samples extracted, ranges of needle deflection angles, and needle deformation after multiple procedures were compared using six types of needles. Results Maximum resistance forces during puncture and removal were highest for ProCore needles and lowest for Expect needles. None of the needles had damage after puncturing. SharkCore needles showed the highest amount of leakage, whereas FNA needles showed no leakage. The puncture tracts of FNA needles remained in the form of a flap at the puncture site, whereas FNB needles broke off the target material creating a hole. The target material removed was supplemented within the puncture needle. TopGain needles produced significantly larger samples than ProCore, EZShot3 Plus, and Expect needles. FNB needles produced larger and more core samples than FNA needles. EZShot3 Plus needles had the highest range of needle deflection angle using an elevator device and the lowest needle deformation after 20 punctures at full endoscopic angle and a full elevator. Conclusions The performance of the six needles differed in various ways. Background: One advantage of endoscopic ultrasound-guided hepaticogastrostomy (EUS-HGS) is that it is difficult for reflux cholangitis, caused by duodenal pressure increasing due to duodenal obstruction, to occur. In addition, since stent deployment is performed away from the malignant stricture site, longer stent patency than with endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) may be obtained. However, no study has previously compared EUS-HGS and ERCP for patients without duodenal obstruction or surgically altered anatomy. The aim of the present study was to compare clinical outcomes between EUS-HGS and ERCP in normal anatomy patients without duodenal obstruction., Method: In the ERCP group, patients who initially underwent biliary drainage were included. In the EUS-HGS group, patients who underwent EUS-HGS due to failed biliary cannulation were included. Patients with an inaccessible papilla, such as with surgically altered anatomy or duodenal obstruction, were excluded., Results: A total of 314 patients who underwent ERCP and EUS-HGS were enrolled in this study. Of the 314 patients, 289 underwent biliary stenting under ERCP guidance, and 25 patients underwent biliary stenting under EUS-HGS. After propensity score-matching analysis, the adverse event rate tended to be lower in the EUS-HGS group than in the ERCP group. Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) represent a major advance in the treatment of cancer. Most studies of ICI have underestimated their cardiotoxicity; however, an increasing number of cases of cardiotoxicity are being reported. Herein we discussed a 67-year-old, male, Japanese patient who presented with cardiogenic shock accompanied by sick sinus syndrome 4 days into his second course of ipilimumab plus nivolumab combination therapy. A temporary transvenous pacemaker was subsequently placed, and a permanent pacemaker was implanted for persistent, symptomatic, intermittent bradycardia. Purpose: To investigate the association between the time from onset to initial treatment and changes in visual acuity or the number of treatments in patients with branch retinal vein occlusion (BVO)., Design: Retrospective., Methods: Thirty-nine eyes of 39 consecutive patients with untreated acute-phase BVO who visited the University of Tokyo Hospital and were followed up for at least one year were included. The patients were initially treated with anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) therapy and additional pro re nata therapy within six months of onset. The patients were classified according to the time from disease onset to the first treatment (group A: 28 days or less, group B: over 28 days)., Results: The mean (SD) age was 73 ± 8 years, and 19 patients were male. The mean (SD) time to the first treatment was 31.6 ± 17.9 days. The mean (SD) logMAR visual acuity at first treatment was 0.37 ± 0.30. After 12 months of treatment, the mean (SD) logMAR change was - 0.15 ± 0.23, and the mean number (SD) of treatments was 3.1 ± 1.7. No significant association was observed between the timing of treatment initiation and changes in logMAR visual acuity. Patients in group A and central macular thickness at the initial visit were independently associated with the greater number of treatments at one year (p = 0.03 and p = 0.01, respectively)., Conclusions: At one year, the time between onset and the start of anti-VEGF therapy for BVO was not associated with subsequent visual acuity changes. Background: Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)-guided transluminal drainage has become a first-line treatment modality for symptomatic pancreatic pseudocysts. Despite the increasing popularity of lumen-apposing metal stents (LAMSs), plastic stents may resolve non-necrotic fluid collections effectively with lower costs and no LAMS-specific adverse events. To date, there has been a paucity of data on the appropriate stent type in this setting. This trial aims to assess the non-inferiority of plastic stents to a LAMS for the initial EUS-guided drainage of pseudocysts., Methods: The WONDER-02 trial is a multicentre, open-label, non-inferiority, randomised controlled trial, which will enrol pancreatic pseudocyst patients requiring EUS-guided treatment in 26 centres in Japan. This trial plans to enrol 80 patients who will be randomised at a 1:1 ratio to receive either plastic stents or a LAMS (40 patients per arm). In the plastic stent group, EUS-guided drainage will be performed using two 7-Fr double pigtail stents. In the LAMS group, the treatment will be performed in the same way except for LAMS use. The step-up treatment will be performed via endoscopic and/or percutaneous procedures at the trial investigator's discretion. The primary endpoint is clinical success, which is defined as a decrease in a pseudocyst size to ≤ 2 cm and an improvement in inflammatory indicators (i.e. body temperature, white blood cell count, and serum C-reactive protein). Secondary endpoints include technical success, adverse events including mortality, pseudocyst recurrence, and medical costs., Discussion: The WONDER-02 trial will investigate the efficacy and safety of plastic stents compared to a LAMS in EUS-guided treatment of symptomatic pancreatic pseudocysts with a particular focus on the non-inferior efficacy of plastic stents. Aim: Work engagement is critical in both occupational and mental health contexts. However, no studies have compared the usefulness of the nine-, three-, and two-item measures from the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES). Therefore, this study aimed to examine the internal consistency and convergent validity of the two-item measure and compare its usefulness with the nine-item and three-item versions for assessing engagement at work among Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) personnel., Methods: This cross-sectional study included 229,383 participants who underwent an annual mental health check between October 19 and December 17, 2021. To test the internal consistency of the scales, Cronbach's alpha was used. To test the convergent validity, Pearson's correlation coefficients were examined for each item corresponding to job resources, job satisfaction, stress reactions, and job demands assessed by the Brief Job Stress Questionnaire., Results: Most participants were men (89.8%). Cronbach's alpha coefficients for the nine-, three-, and two-item scales were 0.95, 0.85, and 0.80, respectively. All three versions showed significant and positive correlations with each of the items corresponding to job resources and job satisfaction. The correlation coefficients of the two-item scale were not inferior to those of the nine-item and three-item scales for job resources and job satisfaction items., Conclusion: Our results showed the internal consistency and convergent validity for the two-item measure of engagement at work among JSDF personnel. Objectives: Detective flow imaging endoscopic ultrasonography (DFI-EUS) is a recent imaging modality developed for detecting fine vessels without the need for ultrasound contrast agents. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the utility of DFI-EUS for solid pancreatic lesions and to compare the diagnostic ability for pancreatic cancer (PC) between DFI-EUS, directional power Doppler (eFLOW) EUS, and contrast-enhanced harmonic (CH)-EUS., Methods: Patients with a pancreatic lesion who underwent DFI-EUS, eFLOW-EUS, and CH-EUS between March 2019 and November 2023 were retrospectively enrolled. Final diagnoses were confirmed by pathologic examination of EUS-guided tissue acquisition and/or resected specimens. Lesions were categorized into the three patterns of poor, mild, and rich vascularity on DFI-EUS and eFLOW-EUS, and hypo-, iso-, and hypervascular on CH-EUS. PC was defined as a poor pattern on DFI-EUS and eFLOW-EUS, and a hypovascular pattern on CH-EUS., Results: The final diagnoses of 90 examined tumors were PC (n = 57), inflammatory mass (n = 6), autoimmune pancreatitis (n = 13), neuroendocrine tumor (n = 9), and others (n = 5). The sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy for diagnosis of PC were 93%, 82%, and 88%, respectively, on DFI-EUS, 97%, 42%, and 77% on eFLOW-EUS, and 95%, 89%, and 92% on CH-EUS. The accuracy of DFI-EUS was significantly superior to eFLOW-EUS (P = 0.005), but no significant difference was found between DFI-EUS and CH-EUS., Conclusion: DFI-EUS is more sensitive for depicting vasculature than eFLOW-EUS, and has higher diagnostic sensitivity for PC. Importance: The characteristics and treatment strategies of atrial functional mitral regurgitation (AFMR) are poorly understood., Objective: To investigate the prevalence, clinical characteristics, and outcomes of mitral valve (MV) surgery in AFMR., Design, Setting, and Participants: This retrospective cohort study, called the Real-World Observational Study for Investigating the Prevalence and Therapeutic Options for Atrial Functional Mitral Regurgitation (REVEAL-AFMR), was conducted across 26 Japanese centers (17 university hospitals, 1 national center, 3 public hospitals, and 5 private hospitals). All transthoracic echocardiography procedures performed from January 1 to December 31, 2019, were reviewed to enroll adult patients (aged ≥20 years) with moderate or severe AFMR, defined by preserved left ventricular function, a dilated left atrium, and an absence of degenerative valvular changes. Data were analyzed from May 8, 2023, to May 16, 2024., Exposures: Mitral valve surgery, with or without tricuspid valve intervention., Main Outcomes and Measures: The primary composite outcome included heart failure hospitalization and all-cause mortality., Results: In 177 235 patients who underwent echocardiography, 8867 had moderate or severe MR. Within this group, 1007 (11.4%) were diagnosed with AFMR (mean [SD] age, 77.8 [9.5] years; 55.7% female), of whom 807 (80.1%) had atrial fibrillation. Of these patients, 113 underwent MV surgery, with 92 (81.4%) receiving concurrent tricuspid valve surgery. Patients who underwent surgery were younger but had more severe MR (57.5% [n = 65] vs 9.4% [n = 84]; P < .001), a larger mean (SD) left atrial volume index (152.5 [97.8] mL/m2 vs 87.7 [53.1] mL/m2; P < .001), and a higher prevalence of heart failure (according to the New York Heart Association class III [marked limitation of physical activity] or class IV [symptoms of heart failure at rest], 26.5% [n = 30] vs 9.3% [n = 83]; P < .001) than those who remained under medical therapy. During a median follow-up of 1050 days (IQR, 741-1188 days), 286 patients (28.4%) experienced the primary outcome. Despite a more severe disease status, only the surgical group showed a decrease in natriuretic peptide levels at follow-up and had a significantly lower rate of the primary outcome (3-year event rates were 18.3% vs 33.3%; log-rank, P = .03). Statistical adjustments did not alter these findings., Conclusions and Relevance: The findings of this cohort study suggest that in patients with AFMR, who were typically older and predominantly had atrial fibrillation, MV surgery was associated with lower rates of adverse clinical outcomes. Future studies are warranted to investigate a possible causal relationship to better regulate cardiovascular medicine.

Sarcopenia is a disease in which a decline in muscle mass with age is associated with a decline in physical performance. In the field of otorhinolaryngology, head and neck surgery, sarcopenia is gaining attention as a cause of swallowing disorders and as a problem in the treatment of head and neck cancer. Head and neck cancer occurs in anatomical sites related to swallowing, so patients with head and neck cancer are prone to swallowing disorders and "nutrition-related sarcopenia." Since it is a cancer, it also becomes a "disease-related sarcopenia," making it easy for patients to develop secondary sarcopenia. Medical intervention against sarcopenia is important in order to decrease the number of adverse events related to treatments for cases with sarcopenia, with reports stating that proactive exercise and nutritional therapy prior to treatment for cases with sarcopenia contributes to a decrease in serious complications as well as improving the survival rate. It is the same for head and neck cancer patients with sarcopenia, so intervention prior to treatment of head and neck cancer is an area that is expected to see reports in the future. However, if the disease is malignant, it is highly likely that sarcopenia cannot be sufficiently improved due to the short period of time from diagnosis to the beginning of treatment. In this case, choosing a treatment that takes sarcopenia into consideration is another way to handle it. Background and Aims: To overcome the technical difficulties associated with gastric endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD), a novel traction device that can alter the direction of traction was developed. This study compared the efficacy and safety of conventional ESD versus those of traction-assisted gastric ESD., Methods: Patients with a single gastric epithelial neoplasm were randomized to receive conventional (n = 75) or traction-assisted (n = 73) gastric ESD. The primary outcome was ESD procedure time., Results: There were no differences between the conventional and traction-assisted groups with respect to treatment results or adverse events. The mean procedure time was similar for both groups (78.9 vs 88.3 minutes, respectively; P = .3); however, times for the traction device tended to be shorter for lesions in the lesser curvature of the upper or middle stomach (84.6 vs 123.2 minutes; P = .057)., Conclusions: Traction-assisted ESD for lesions in the lesser curvature of the upper or middle stomach were shorter, thereby reducing the procedure time of conventional ESD. Background: Immune-checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) often cause immune-related adverse events (irAEs). The spectrum of irAEs and their managements has been partially clarified, however the knowledge on time-course of irAEs is not well understood., Methods: A retrospective study based on the medical record was performed. The study subjects were consisting of patients with various types of solid tumors for whom ICIs (nivolumab, pembrolizumab, durvalumab, atezolizumab, nivolumab plus ipilimumab) were used between April 2016 and October 2021. We focused on irAEs developed more than 1-year after commencement ICIs (delayed irAE group) and compared with irAEs developed within 1-year (non-delayed irAE group) in terms of types and severity of irAEs., Results: A total of 336 patients were enrolled in the study. Eighty-eight patients (26.2%) developed irAEs and 248 did not. Most of the patients developing irAEs were treated using PD-L1/PD-1 inhibitors. Eighty-one patients (24.1%) in non-delayed irAE group and 7 patients (2.1%) in delayed irAE group developed irAEs. The median onset of irAEs in the delayed irAE group was 18.6 months (range: 13.5-24.3). The types of irAEs observed in delayed irAE group were dermatitis (2 cases), pneumonitis (2 cases), nephritis (1 case), arthritis (1 case), and gastritis (1 case). The severity of irAEs was almost mild (≤G2), but one patient (.3%) developed G3 nephritis., Conclusion: PD-L1/PD-1 inhibitors frequently caused various irAEs but their severities were mostly tolerable. Background: In the preplanned interim analysis of the TOPAZ-1 study, durvalumab plus gemcitabine-cisplatin significantly improved overall survival versus placebo plus gemcitabine-cisplatin in participants with advanced biliary tract cancer. We aimed to report updated overall survival and safety data from TOPAZ-1 with additional follow-up and data maturity beyond the interim analysis., Methods: TOPAZ-1 was a phase 3, randomised, double-masked, placebo-controlled, global study done at 105 sites in 17 countries. Participants aged 18 years or older with unresectable, locally advanced, or metastatic biliary tract cancer were randomly assigned (1:1) to durvalumab plus gemcitabine-cisplatin or placebo plus gemcitabine-cisplatin using a computer-generated randomisation scheme, stratified by disease status and primary tumour location. Participants received durvalumab (1500 mg) or placebo on day 1 of each cycle every 3 weeks for up to eight cycles, plus gemcitabine (1000 mg/m 2 ) and cisplatin (25 mg/m 2 ) intravenously on days 1 and 8 of each cycle every 3 weeks for up to eight cycles, followed by durvalumab (1500 mg) or placebo monotherapy every 4 weeks until disease progression or other discontinuation criteria were met. Investigators and participants were masked to study treatment. The primary endpoint was overall survival. TOPAZ-1 met its primary endpoint at the preplanned interim analysis, and the study is active but no longer recruiting participants. Updated overall survival and safety data from TOPAZ-1, with additional follow-up (data cutoff Feb 25, 2022) and data maturity beyond the interim analysis, are reported here. Efficacy was assessed in the full analysis set (all randomly assigned participants). Safety was assessed in the safety analysis set (all participants who received at least one dose of study treatment). The TOPAZ-1 study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT03875235., Findings: From April 16, 2019, to Dec 11, 2020, 914 participants were enrolled, 685 of whom were randomly assigned (341 to the durvalumab plus gemcitabine-cisplatin group and 344 to the placebo plus gemcitabine-cisplatin group). 345 (50%) participants were male and 340 (50%) were female. Median follow-up at the updated data cutoff was 23·4 months (95% CI 20·6-25·2) in the durvalumab plus gemcitabine-cisplatin group and 22·4 months (21·4-23·8) in the placebo plus gemcitabine-cisplatin group. At the updated data cutoff, 248 (73%) participants in the durvalumab plus gemcitabine-cisplatin group and 279 (81%) participants in the placebo plus gemcitabine-cisplatin group had died (median overall survival 12·9 months [95% CI 11·6-14·1] vs 11·3 months [10·1-12·5]; hazard ratio 0·76 [95% CI 0·64-0·91]). Kaplan-Meier-estimated 24-month overall survival rates were 23·6% (95% CI 18·7-28·9) in the durvalumab plus gemcitabine-cisplatin group and 11·5% (7·6-16·2) in the placebo plus gemcitabine-cisplatin group. Maximum grade 3 or 4 adverse events occurred in 250 (74%) of 338 participants in the durvalumab plus gemcitabine-cisplatin group and 257 (75%) of 342 in the placebo plus gemcitabine-cisplatin group. The most common maximum grade 3 or 4 treatment-related adverse events were decreased neutrophil count (70 [21%] vs 86 [25%]), anaemia (64 [19%] vs 64 [19%]), and neutropenia (63 [19%] vs 68 [20%])., Interpretation: Durvalumab plus gemcitabine-cisplatin showed robust and sustained overall survival benefit with no new safety signals. Tracheal cartilage provides structural support to the airways to enable breathing. However, it can become damaged or impaired, sometimes requiring surgical resection and reconstruction. Previously, we clinically applied an artificial trachea composed of a polypropylene mesh and collagen sponge, with a favorable postoperative course. However, the artificial trachea presents a limitation, as the mesh is not biodegradable and cannot be used in pediatric patients. Compared to a polypropylene mesh, regenerated cartilage represents an ideal material for reconstruction of the damaged trachea. The use of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) as a source for cartilage regeneration has gained widespread acceptance, but challenges such as the invasiveness of harvesting and limited cell supply persist. Therefore, we focused on the potential of human-induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC)-derived mesenchymal stem cells (iMSCs) for tracheal cartilage regeneration. In this study, we aimed to regenerate tracheal cartilage on an artificial trachea as a preliminary step to replace the polypropylene mesh. iMSCs were induced from hiPSCs through neural crest cells and transplanted with a polypropylene mesh covered with a collagen sponge into the damaged tracheal cartilage in immunodeficient rats. Human nuclear antigen (HNA)-positive cells were observed in all six rats at 4 weeks and in six out of seven rats at 12 weeks after transplantation, indicating that transplanted iMSCs survived within the tracheal cartilage defects of rats. The HNA-positive cells coexpressed SOX9, and type II collagen was detected around HNA-positive cells in four of six rats at 4 weeks and in three of seven rats at 12 weeks after transplantation, reflecting cartilage-like tissue regeneration. These results indicate that the transplanted iMSCs could differentiate into chondrogenic cells and promote tracheal cartilage regeneration. iMSC transplantation thus represents a promising approach for human tracheal reconstruction.

Catalytic propane dehydrogenation (PDH) has mainly been studied using metal- and metal oxide-based catalysts. Studies on dehydrogenation catalysis by metal hydrides, however, have rarely been reported. In this study, PDH reactions using group IIIB and IVB metal hydride catalysts were investigated under relatively low-temperature conditions of 450 °C. Lanthanum hydride exhibited the lowest activation energy for dehydrogenation and the highest propylene yield. [Purpose] Virtual reality (VR) rehabilitation has become popular in the medical field. VR-guided exercises (VR-ge) have demonstrated positive effects on gait and trunk control. Trunk muscle activation, particularly that of the transversus abdominis (TrA), is responsible for these improvements. However, the difference in muscle activation between VR and real space remains unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to clarify the differences in trunk muscle activation during exercise therapy performed in VR and real space. [Participants and Methods] A total of 22 healthy male volunteers were divided into two equal groups: VR-ge and Control exercise (C-e) groups. Both groups performed reaching exercises in a seated position. Ultrasound imaging was used to measure the thicknesses of the right external oblique, internal oblique, and TrA muscles, both at rest and during the reaching exercises performed in six different directions. [Results] No significant differences were observed in TrA muscle thickness changes between the groups before the intervention. However, after the intervention, the VR-ge group showed significantly greater TrA muscle thickness changes during reaching compared to that of the C-e group. Importance: Peacekeepers in United Nations missions experience potentially traumatic events, resulting in increased risk for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Understanding the course and risk factors of PTSD symptom severity is crucial to ensure personnel safety., Objective: To investigate the incidence of PTSD, symptom severity trajectories, and potential risk factors associated with adverse trajectories among Japanese peacekeepers deployed in South Sudan., Design, Setting, and Participants: Data for this 6-year prospective cohort study were collected from December 2011 to December 2018 from Japan Ground Self-Defense Force personnel deployed at the United Nations Mission in South Sudan, corresponding to before and up to 78 months after deployment. Of 3799 potential participants, 80 were excluded because of multiple deployments and 757 because of missing data, incomplete responses, or not providing informed consent. Therefore, 2962 participants were included in the analysis. Data analysis was performed from February 2022 to February 2024., Exposure: The participants were deployed to United Nations Mission in South Sudan for 6 months., Main Outcomes and Measures: The 22-item Impact of Event Scale-Revised was used to assess PTSD symptoms, with 25 or more points indicating probable PTSD (p-PTSD). Sociodemographic data were collected, and the 30-item General Health Questionnaire was administered before deployment to identify risk factors for PTSD symptom severity., Results: In the 2962 participants studied (2901 [97.9%] male; mean [SD] age, 33.9 [7.2] years), the incidence of p-PTSD was 3.95%. Latent growth mixture models identified 4 symptom severity trajectories: resilient (2143 [72.3%]), recovery (479 [16.2%]), protracted (182 [6.1%]), and delayed (158 [5.3%]). Multinomial logistic regression showed that sleep disturbance was a common risk factor for the 2 most severe trajectories (protracted: odds ratio [OR], 1.29; 95% CI, 1.08-1.54; delayed: OR, 1.26; 95% CI, 1.03-1.53), whereas older age (OR, 1.25; 95% CI, 1.06-1.48), anxiety and dysphoria (OR, 1.45; 95% CI, 1.20-1.75), and general illness (OR, 1.30; 95% CI, 1.06-1.59) were associated with the protracted trajectory., Conclusions and Relevance: This cohort study found that approximately 4% of the participants developed p-PTSD and identified 4 distinct PTSD symptom trajectories. The findings suggest that addressing sleep disturbance and general health issues could effectively prevent PTSD symptoms among peacekeepers.

Investigating the infection mechanism of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in the airway epithelium and developing effective defense strategies against infection are important. To achieve this, establishing appropriate infection models is crucial. Therefore, various in vitro models, such as cell lines and primary cultures, and in vivo models involving animals that exhibit SARS-CoV-2 infection and genetically humanized animals have been used as animal models. However, no animal model has been established that allows infection experiments with human cells under the physiological environment of airway epithelia. Therefore, we aimed to establish a novel animal model that enables infection experiments using human cells. Human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived airway epithelial cell-transplanted nude rats (hiPSC-AEC rats) were used, and infection studies were performed by spraying lentiviral pseudoviruses containing SARS-CoV-2 spike protein and the GFP gene on the tracheae. After infection, immunohistochemical analyses revealed the existence of GFP-positive-infected transplanted cells in the epithelial and submucosal layers. In this study, a SARS-CoV-2 infection animal model including human cells was established mimicking infection through respiration, and we demonstrated that the hiPSC-AEC rat could be used as an animal model for basic research and the development of therapeutic methods for human-specific respiratory infectious diseases.

Endoscopic ultrasound-guided tissue acquisition (EUS-TA), including fine-needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) and fine-needle biopsy (EUS-FNB), has revolutionized specimen collection from intra-abdominal organs, especially the pancreas. Advances in personalized medicine and more precise treatment have increased demands to collect specimens with higher cell counts, while preserving tissue structure, leading to the development of EUS-FNB needles. EUS-FNB has generally replaced EUS-FNA as the procedure of choice for EUS-TA of pancreatic cancer. Various techniques have been tested for their ability to enhance the diagnostic performance of EUS-TA, including multiple methods of sampling at the time of puncture, on-site specimen evaluation, and specimen processing. In addition, advances in next-generation sequencing have made comprehensive genomic profiling of EUS-TA samples feasible in routine clinical practice. The ability of NaCl-type binary transition metal nitrides (incorporating La, Ce, Y, Zr or Hf) to act as catalytic supports facilitating ammonia decomposition was examined. The effect of nitrogen vacancies formed on nitrides can be understood in terms of the ionic radii of the metal cations. A clear correlation between the N 2 desorption temperature and catalytic activity was found.
