6. Results on Martin's Conjecture

Abstract

Martin's conjecture is an attempt to classify the behavior of all definable functions on the Turing degrees under strong set theoretic hypotheses. Very roughly it says that every such function is either eventually constant, eventually equal to the identity function or eventually equal to a transfinite iterate of the Turing jump. It is typically divided into two parts: the first part states that every function is either eventually constant or eventually above the identity function and the second part states that every function which is above the identity is eventually equal to a transfinite iterate of the jump. If true, it would provide an explanation for the unique role of the Turing jump in computability theory and rule out many types of constructions on the Turing degrees.In this thesis we will introduce a few tools which we use to prove several cases of Martin's conjecture. It turns out that both these tools and these results on Martin's conjecture have some interesting consequences both for Martin's conjecture and for a few related topics.The main tool that we introduce is a basis theorem for perfect sets, improving a theorem due to Groszek and Slaman. We also introduce a general framework for proving certain special cases of Martin's conjecture which unifies a few pre-existing proofs. We will use these tools to prove three main results about Martin's conjecture: that it holds for regressive functions on the hyperarithmetic degrees (answering a question of Slaman and Steel), that part 1 holds for order preserving functions on the Turing degrees, and that part 1 holds for a class of functions that we introduce, called measure preserving functions.This last result has several interesting consequences for the study of Martin's conjecture. In particular, it shows that part 1 of Martin's conjecture is equivalent to a statement about the Rudin-Keisler order on ultrafilters on the Turing degrees. This suggests several possible strategies for working on part 1 of Martin's conjecture, which we will discuss.The basis theorem that we use to prove these results also has some applications outside of Martin's conjecture. We will use it to prove a few theorems related to Sacks' question about whether it is provable in ZFC that every locally countable partial order of size continuum embeds into the Turing degrees. We will show that in a certain extension of ZF (which is incompatible with ZFC), this holds for all partial orders of height two, but not for all partial orders of height three. We will also present an obstacle to embedding height three partial orders into the Turing degrees in ZFC which shows that one of the most natural ways of trying to do so cannot work.We will end the thesis with a list of open questions related to Martin's conjecture, which we hope will stimulate further research.

Abstract

Suppose you have an uncomputable set $X$ and you want to find a set $A$, all of whose infinite subsets compute $X$. There are several ways to do this, but all of them seem to produce a set $A$ which is fairly sparse. We show that this is necessary in the following technical sense: if $X$ is uncomputable and $A$ is a set of positive lower density then $A$ has an infinite subset which does not compute $X$. We will show that this theorem is sharp in certain senses and also prove a quantitative version formulated in terms of Kolmogorov complexity. Our results use a modified version of Mathias forcing and build on work by Seetapun and others on the reverse math of Ramsey's theorem for pairs., 30 pages

Abstract

The Solecki dichotomy in descriptive set theory and the Posner-Robinson theorem in computability theory bear a superficial resemblance to each other and can sometimes be used to prove the same results, but do not have any obvious direct relationship. We show that in fact there is such a relationship by formulating slightly weakened versions of the two theorems and showing that, when combined with determinacy principles, each one yields a short proof of the other. This relationship also holds for generalizations of the Solecki dichotomy and the Posner-Robinson theorem to higher levels of the Borel/hyperarithmetic hierarchy., 11 pages

Abstract

Dedicated neural network (NN) architectures have been designed to handle specific data types (such as CNN for images or RNN for text), which ranks them among state-of-the-art methods for dealing with these data. Unfortunately, no architecture has been found for dealing with tabular data yet, for which tree ensemble methods (tree boosting, random forests) usually show the best predictive performances. In this work, we propose a new sparse initialization technique for (potentially deep) multilayer perceptrons (MLP): we first train a tree-based procedure to detect feature interactions and use the resulting information to initialize the network, which is subsequently trained via standard stochastic gradient strategies. Numerical experiments on several tabular data sets show that this new, simple and easy-to-use method is a solid concurrent, both in terms of generalization capacity and computation time, to default MLP initialization and even to existing complex deep learning solutions. In fact, this wise MLP initialization raises the resulting NN methods to the level of a valid competitor to gradient boosting when dealing with tabular data. Besides, such initializations are able to preserve the sparsity of weights introduced in the first layers of the network through training. This fact suggests that this new initializer operates an implicit regularization during the NN training, and emphasizes that the first layers act as a sparse feature extractor (as for convolutional layers in CNN).

Abstract

We describe a project to formalize Galois theory using the Lean theorem prover, which is part of a larger effort to formalize all of the standard undergraduate mathematics curriculum in Lean. We discuss some of the challenges we faced and the decisions we made in the course of this project. The main theorems we formalized are the primitive element theorem, the fundamental theorem of Galois theory, and the equivalence of several characterizations of finite degree Galois extensions., 15 pages

Abstract

Blood Brain Barrier (BBB) breakdown is a secondary form of brain injury which has yet to be fully elucidated mechanistically. Existing research suggests that breakdown of tight junction proteins between endothelial cells is a primary driver of increased BBB permeability following injury, and intercellular signaling between primary cells of the neurovascular unit: endothelial cells, astrocytes, and pericytes; contribute to tight junction restoration. To expound upon this body of research, we analyzed the effects of severely injured patient plasma on each of the cell types in monoculture and together in a triculture model for the transcriptional and translational expression of the tight junction proteins Claudins 3 and 5, (CLDN3, CLDN5) and Zona Occludens 1 (ZO-1). Conditioned media transfer studies were performed to illuminate the cell type responsible for differential tight junction expression. Our data show that incubation with 5% human ex vivo severely injured patient plasma is sufficient to produce a differential response in endothelial cell tight junction mRNA and protein expression. Endothelial cells in monoculture produced a significant increase of CLDN3 and CLDN5 mRNA expression, (3.98 and 3.51 fold increase vs. control respectively, p<0.01) and CLDN5 protein expression, (2.58 fold change vs. control, p<0.01), whereas in triculture, this increase was attenuated. Our triculture model and conditioned media experiments suggest that conditioned media from astrocytes and pericytes and a triculture of astrocytes, pericytes and endothelial cells are sufficient in attenuating the transcriptional increases of tight junction proteins CLDN3 and CLDN5 observed in endothelial monocultures following incubation with severely injured trauma plasma. This data suggests that inhibitory molecular signals from astrocytes and pericytes contributes to prolonged BBB breakdown following injury via tight junction transcriptional and translational downregulation of CLDN5.
