Abstract

The optical access network is currently driving studies on transmissions beyond 10 Gbit/s. This paper reports an analysis of Pulse Amplitude Modulation (PAM), seen as a promising candidate for future Passive Optical Networks (PON). Previous 25 Gbit/s real-time PAM4 results are extrapolated here with simulations to higher bit rates and a higher number of PAM levels. Our main goal is to evaluate the compliancy of PAM with the existing standards and legacy networks as far as fiber length, optical budget class, and wavelength plan are concerned. The simulations enlighten us as to the challenges of multilevel modulation formats, such as noise and jitter, compared to the currently adopted Non-Return-to-Zero (NRZ).

Abstract

International audience; In this paper, we propose a Software Defined Network-based (SDN) Passive Optical Network (PON) Radio Access Networks (RAN) protection scheme. We experimentally assess the performance by implementing it through a testbed including an SDN controller, Small form-factor pluggable transceiver PON (SFP+/PON), a layer 2 switch, and several SFP+ Point-to-Point (SFP+/PtP) in lieu of a traditional OLT chassis. We compared our proposition with a PtP scheme based on legacy layer 2 redundancy protocol solution with respect to different metrics such as recovery time, latency, power consumption, CAPEX and flexibility/scalability. We show that a trade-off exists among those metrics and that while the SDN-based solution is outperformed by the legacy-based one in terms of recovery time, the proposed solution still provides a remarkable improvement with respect to nowadays practices in protection, while allowing for cost and energy reduction. Such solution scheme can thus be used as a protection scheme for non-time-critical services.

The digital formation of an analog subcarrier multiplex employing in combination both a technique using pre-IFFT frequency-domain samples and one using post-IFFT time-domain samples is proposed and demonstrated. This combined technique enables a compromise for sampling rate requirements, while maintaining low complexity and good performance.

Abstract

The optical access network is currently driving studies on transmissions beyond 10 Gbit/s. This paper reports an analysis of Pulse Amplitude Modulation (PAM), seen as a promising candidate for future Passive Optical Networks (PON). Previous 25 Gbit/s real-time PAM4 results are extrapolated here with simulations to higher bit rates and a higher number of PAM levels. Our main goal is to evaluate the compliancy of PAM with the existing standards and legacy networks as far as fiber length, optical budget class, and wavelength plan are concerned. The simulations enlighten us as to the challenges of multilevel modulation formats, such as noise and jitter, compared to the currently adopted Non-Return-to-Zero (NRZ).

Abstract

International audience; In this paper we present real-time transmission performances up to 25 Gbit/s for optical access network. Our solution is based at transceiver side on pre-coded NRZ and electrical duo-binary modulations using limited electrical bandwidth DML in C and O band. At the receiver side, an electrical duo-binary receiver based on an 8 GHz APD photodiode combined with an online duo-binary to binary converter is employed.

10. Experimental Investigation of Compression with Fixed-length Code Quantization for Convergent Access-Mobile Networks

Abstract

We experimentally assess compression with scalar and vector quantization for fixed-mobile convergent networks. We show that four-dimensional vector quantization allows 73% compression compliant with 3GPP EVM recommendations for transmissions over 25 km SSMF with 1:16 split ratio., 2016 IEEE. Abstract

International audience; A compact silicon-on-insulator 2-tap interferometer is demonstrated as a channel equalizer. The radiofrequency filter is reconfigurable thanks to thermally-controlled photonic crystal couplers and delay lines. The channel fading of a dispersive fiber link supporting a directly modulated telecommunication signal is successfully compensated for using the interferometer, leading to eye diagram opening and the possibility to recover the bit-error-rate of a reference signal with less than 1-dB power penalty.

Abstract

International audience; The future technology migration in access networks compels the development of key innovative transmitters operating at 10 Gb/s around 1550 nm and capable of transmitting data in extended reach passive optical networks (>60 km). A laser modulated directly appears to be a low cost and a simple solution to address these needs. However, the extinction ratio and the distance of transmission are limited by frequency chirping inherent to high bit rate modulation at 1550 nm. In this letter, we demonstrate the monolithic integration of a directly modulated lasers and a ring resonator (RR) and show the possibility to engineer the RR with specific frequency modulation efficiency. The ring is used as an optical eye reshaper, which enables the increase of the extinction ratio above 9 dB. Transmissions up to 65 km with 5.8 dBm of modulated optical power coupled into the fiber are demonstrated, proving the feasibility of our transmitter for the next generation passive optical network stage 2

Abstract

International audience; We present a simple alternative method for the compensation of quadrature imbalance in optical quadrature phase-shift-keying (QPSK) coherent systems. The method is based on the determination and the compensation of the phase mismatch by the introduction of a relevant signal-to-noise ratio metric. The principle is validated numerically and the algorithm is validated experimentally through bit-error-rate (BER) and error vector magnitude (EVM) measurements. A 20 Gb/s optical QPSK experiment reveals a good agreement of theproposed method with the Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization procedure (GSOP). Moreover, the robustness of both methods was verified with up to 30° phase misalignment by comparing the signal after phase imbalance compensation to that without compensation. A 10% reduction of EVM is achieved with our method for a high phase misalignment of 30°.

International audience; We report on a simple and fast method to estimate the fiber dispersion and laser chirp parameters on a dispersive Intensity Modulation and Direct Detection (IM/DD) optical channel. Based on the general IM/DD small-signal frequency response, we use the Downhill-Simplex algorithm to fit the channel measurement retrieved with a network analyzer to a general mathematical model. The method is proven to be quite efficient for light sources of different natures and with different adiabatic and transient chirp characteristics, including a Distributed Feedback (DFB) laser, an Electroabsorption modulator (EAM) and even a Reflective Semiconductor Optical Amplifier with fiber-Bragg grating (RSOA-FBG).

Abstract

Fiber dispersion coupled with the chirp parameter of the laser impacts the optical transmission system performance. Fiber dispersion causes the propagating pulses to spread and overlap, and the chirp produces a wavelength shift arising from the intensity variation of the laser. Coupled with the Levin-Campello bit-loading algorithm, adaptively modulated optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing optimizes the data rate by taking into consideration the channel quality. This article shows the system performance for optical links starting with an optical back-to-back and ending with 125 km of single-mode fiber with a fixed optical budget of 30 dB for all distances.

Abstract

Future mobile networks will offer high data rates based on high-capacity fronthaul. Current fronthaul design has two main components that communicate via the common public radio interface and fiber links, i.e., remote units (RUs) that implement simple signal processing and centralized baseband units (CBBUs) in high power-consuming data centers that perform complex network functions. Various functional splits between CBBUs and RUs are feasible, inducing trade-offs between centralization gains and bandwidth demands. This design lacks in capacity and flexibility, motivating the use of converged fiber-wireless (Fi-Wi) fronthaul with high-bandwidth fiber and millimeter-wave links, and splits that move functionalities to RUs reducing the delay demands. Further flexibility is offered by analog radio-over-fiber fronthaul that supports dynamic functional splitting via software-defined networking (SDN). Ensuring acceptable delay for all RUs, i.e., minimizing fronthaul grade-of-service (GoS), requires selection of CBBUs, channel bandwidth and functional splits of RUs. The split type affects fronthaul power consumption determining which fronthaul components are active and their processing power. Using a simulated annealing-based dynamic fronthaul resource allocation (DFRA) scheme, we jointly optimize GoS and power consumption in a novel SDN Fi-Wi fronthaul. Our results show that DFRA minimizes GoS and power consumption for all load levels outperforming baseline approaches.

Abstract

Analog fronthaul transport architectures with digital signal processing at the end stations are promising, as they have the potential to achieve high spectral efficiencies, increased flexibility, and reduced latency. In this paper, two digital techniques for frequency-domain multiplexing/demultiplexing large numbers of channels are contrasted: one operates on the pre-inverse fast Fourier transform (IFFT) “frequency-domain” samples, while the other does so on the post-IFFT “time-domain” samples. Performance criteria, including computational complexity and sampling rate requirements, are used in the comparison. Following modeling and simulation of the techniques, implemented within a radio-over-fiber transport architecture, error vector magnitude performance estimates are obtained. These results show that each technique has performance advantages under specific channel transport scenarios.

This paper describes full service access network operator group perspectives on the feasibility of optical access networks to carry radio access network traffic for the existing and future mobile generations. The paper discusses topics related to the evolution of radio access interfaces, such as backhaul, midhaul, and fronthaul, their transmission through optical distribution networks, and passive optical network technology feasibility based on both time and wavelength division multiplexing and multiple accesses. Technology extensions are also discussed to provide guidance for future research.
