Abstract

The attitude towards scientific research of university students is a determinant index of the education quality in an institution, and it is fundamental to consolidate the profession as a science. The aim of this study was to describe the attitudes towards scientific research of the Peruvian students of the professional program of psychology. The research approach was quantitative, non-experimental design of basic and field type. The sample consisted of 546 undergraduate students of the professional program of psychology. A sociodemographic form and the Index of Attitude towards Research were used to collect information. The results show that psychology students have an unfavorable attitude towards research. Likewise, they have a low opinion about their self-assessment of research skills, the quality of human resources in teaching research and the promotion of research by the university where they study. In conclusion, it is essential to promote strategies to improve students' attitudes towards research, reinforcing the quality of research courses and selecting teachers with knowledge of research and potential for scientific production.

5. Counselor Burnout: Latina/O/X Counterstories from High School Counselors with Caseloads of at Least 350 Students

Abstract

This qualitative study utilizes Latina/Latino Critical Race Theory as a lens to present the perceptions of Latina/Latino/Latinx school counselors who were in public high schools for at least two years with caseloads of at least 350 students. Counselor Burnout has been a topic researched extensively but mainly through studies that focus on the experiences of counselors who identify as Female and White. The study identified, through interviews, barriers, and obstacles such as racial microaggressions, a lack of resources, a lack of support from administrators, high caseloads, and extra duties that led to burnout and dissatisfaction among the participants. The participants were also able to identify systems of support, motivators, and positive coping mechanism that provided a positive outlook as school counselors. 19. Developing Latina/o Leaders: Examining Leadership and Civic Outcomes of Latina/o College Students at Four-Year Colleges and Universities

Abstract

Researchers, institutional leaders, government policy makers, and leading foundations note the significant role an educated Latina/o population plays in the nation, future workforce, and democracy. This longitudinal study examines the experiences in U.S. colleges and universities that prepare Latina/o students for participation in American democracy and roles in communities and across industries. This study controls background characteristics and predispositions to determine the effect of Latina/o college experiences on civic awareness, commitment of becoming a community leader, and leadership development. Guided by Astin's Involvement Theory and Nora, Barlow and Crisp's Student/Institution Engagement Model, this study employed logistic and multivariate regression analyses on a national sample of 2,164 Latina/o college students who were first-time, full-time freshmen at four-year colleges and universities. The 2004 CIRP Freshmen and 2008 College Senior Surveys were merged with IPEDS institutional data for the study. Findings indicate that college cross racial interactions, attending racial/cultural awareness workshops, and participating in political demonstrations predict Latina/o participation in ethnic/racial student organizations, all of which also predict increases in the personal goal of becoming a community leader. Other predictors of community leadership values are associated with negative cross racial interactions, leadership ability, and performing volunteer work. Civic awareness is fostered by attending a Hispanic Serving Institution, positive cross racial interactions, attending cultural/racial awareness workshops, social agency, and confidence in leadership ability. Latina/os' leadership development (self-ratings change) is associated with voting in student elections, positive cross racial interactions, attending cultural/racial awareness workshops, social agency, and performing volunteer work. In terms of differences among Latina/os, non-native English speakers are more likely to join racial/ethnic organizations, show high civic awareness, and commitment to becoming a community leader. The lower engagement of native English speakers is an area of concern since they have potential for civic leadership. In another area of concern, Latinas are less likely than males to show increases in their leadership ability self-ratings in college. This suggests challenges remain in terms of increasing Latina leadership. The paradox is Latinas are involved in increasing numbers and capacities in student organizations and leadership roles, yet this does not translate to increase Latina leadership. The study extends previous findings indicating diversity-oriented college activities and experiences have a significant and positive effect on student social and civic outcomes. 25. Incidental L2 Vocabulary Learning: An Impracticable Term?

Abstract

References to the term "incidental vocabulary learning" have become very commonplace not only in second language (L2) acquisition research, but also in empirical research into second and foreign language pedagogy, very often in contrast to "intentional language learning". The former term is associated with more natural language learning, that is, outside formal classroom instruction, whereas the latter is assumed to be typical of practices and behaviors within it. As will become apparent, incidental vocabulary learning is actually an impracticable and not very useful term for current empirical research into vocabulary development in L2 pedagogy. The authors suggest an alternative term to the incidental-intentional contrast, namely, "induced vocabulary salience," which reflects an external intervention perspective, rather than an internal individual participant one.

Abstract

Edoxaban is used for venous thromboembolism (VTE) treatment. Real-life data are lacking about its use in long-term therapy. We aimed to assess the efficacy and the safety of edoxaban for long-term VTE treatment in a real-life setting. Patients with VTE included in the Registro Informatizado Enfermedad TromboEmbólica (RIETE) registry, receiving edoxaban 60 or 30 mg daily were prospectively followed up to validate the benefit of using different dosages. The main outcome was the composite of VTE recurrences or major bleeding in patients with or without criteria for dose reduction. Multivariable analysis to identify predictors for the composite outcome was performed. From October 2015 to November 2019, 562 patients received edoxaban for long-term therapy. Most (94%) of the 416 patients not meeting criteria for dose reduction received 60 mg daily, and 92 patients meeting criteria (63%) received 30 mg daily. During treatment, two patients developed recurrent VTE, six had major bleeding and nine died (2 from fatal bleeding). Among patients not meeting criteria for dose reduction, those receiving 30 mg daily had a higher rate of the composite event (hazard ratio (HR) 8.37; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.12–42.4) and a significant higher mortality rate (HR 31.1; 95% CI 4.63–262) than those receiving 60 mg. Among patients meeting criteria for dose reduction, those receiving 60 mg daily had no events, and a nonsignificantly higher mortality rate (HR 5.04; 95% CI 0.54–133) than those receiving 30 mg daily. In conclusion, edoxaban seems to be effective and safe for long-term VTE treatment in real life. Criteria for dose reduction should be reformulated., No funding was received for this work

Abstract

The association between elevated liver enzymes or FIB-4 (fibrosis index 4) and outcome in patients with venous thromboembolism (VTE) has not been evaluated. Data from patients in RIETE (Registro Informatizado Enfermedad TromboEmbólica) were used to assess the association between elevated liver enzymes or FIB-4 levels and the rates of major bleeding or death in apparent liver disease-free patients with acute VTE under anticoagulation therapy. A total of 6206 patients with acute VTE and without liver disease were included. Of them, 92 patients had major bleeding and 168 died under anticoagulation therapy. On multivariable analysis, patients with elevated liver enzymes were at increased mortality risk (HR: 1.58; 95% CI: 1.10–2.28), while those with FIB-4 levels > 2.67 points were at increased risk for major bleeding (HR: 1.69; 95% CI: 1.04–2.74). Evaluation of liver enzymes and FIB-4 index at baseline in liver disease-free patients with VTE may provide additional information on the risk for major bleeding or death during anticoagulation. Abstract

In the current era of patient empowerment and precision medicine, access to timely information is critical to decision-making. Unfortunately, we currently lack patient-specific, real-time data about clinical presentation, risk of thrombotic or hemorrhagic events, key risk factors, and adverse outcomes in patients with venous thromboembolism (VTE). Accordingly, the Registro Informatizado Enfermedad TromboEmbólica (RIETE) investigators developed a tool to provide an open-source, real-time graphic representation of VTE-related data derived from over 90 000 patients with confirmed VTE. This information is intended to facilitate discussion in the informed decision-making process. The current article describes the aims, rationale, methods, and ongoing and future efforts of the real-time VTE infographics developed by the RIETE registry collaborators.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Limited data exist about the clinical presentation, ideal therapy and outcomes of patients with hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) who develop venous thromboembolism (VTE). METHODS: We used the data in the RIETE Registry to assess the clinical characteristics, therapeutic approaches and clinical outcomes during the course of anticoagulant therapy in patients with HHT according to initial presentation as pulmonary embolism (PE) or deep venous thrombosis (DVT). RESULTS: Of 51,375 patients with acute VTE enrolled in RIETE from February 2009 to January 2019, 23 (0.04%) had HHT: 14 (61%) initially presented with PE and 9 (39%) with DVT alone. Almost half (47.8%) of the patients with VTE had a risk factor for VTE. Most PE and DVT patients received low-molecular-weight heparin for initial (71 and 100%, respectively) and long-term therapy (54 and 67%, respectively). During anticoagulation for VTE, the rate of bleeding events (major 2, non-major 6) far outweighed the rate of VTE recurrences (recurrent DVT 1): 50.1 bleeds per 100 patient-years (95%CI: 21.6-98.7) vs. 6.26 recurrences (95%CI: 0.31-30.9; p = 0.020). One major and three non-major bleeding were epistaxis. No patient died of bleeding. One patient died shortly after being diagnosed with acute PE. CONCLUSIONS: During anticoagulation for VTE in HHT patients, there were more bleeding events than VTE recurrences. 32. Investigation of Mechanisms Underlying African Trypanosome Social Behavior

Abstract

African trypanosomes, including Trypanosoma brucei and related subspecies, are the causative agents of sleeping sickness in humans and nagana in cattle. These parasites are the source of significant human mortality and limit economic growth throughout sub-Saharan Africa. T. brucei has a complex life cycle with phases in an insect vector and a mammalian host. Although motility through fluids and on tissue surfaces is central to T. brucei development and disease pathogenesis, a complete description of how the parasite moves through fluids and behave on surfaces is not available. Through the use of novel techniques and classical molecular approaches applied towards the study of T. brucei motility in suspension media and on surfaces, we have discovered unappreciated aspects of protozoan parasite biology. Though the use of high-speed imaging, we found that that T. brucei moves through suspension media via the propagation of kinks generated by the parasite's ability to alternate the chirality of its rotation. The observation that T. brucei moves by generating alternating chiralities disproved the 150 year long notion that the parasite moves by spiraling in one direction and demonstrates that high-speed imaging can be a useful tool for uncovering important features of microorganism locomotion. By studying T. brucei on agarose plates, we discovered that T. brucei engages in social behavior when exposed to surfaces: an unprecedented finding in protozoan parasite biology. This social behavior, termed Social Motility (SoMo) is characterized by the formation of multicellular communities that engage in polarized migrations across the agarose surface and cooperate to divert their movements in response to external signals. Investigation of the mechanisms underlying this social behavior revealed a novel role for a unique family of receptor-like proteins that were previously uncharacterized and implicates a role for cAMP signaling in the regulation of SoMo. Lastly, our search for extra cellular factors that regulate this social behavior has led to the discovery of inter-kingdom cross-talk between T. brucei and bacteria. In short, the investigations presented here have uncovered novel aspects of T. brucei behavior that have transformed our understanding of protozoan biology and will serve as the basis for future investigations.

Abstract

Knee arthroscopy is the most common orthopedic procedure worldwide. While incidence of post-arthroscopy venous thromboembolic events (VTE) is low, treatment patterns and patient outcomes have not been described. Patients from the "Registro Informatizado Enfermedad TromboEmbolica" who had confirmed post-arthroscopy VTE were compared to patients with provoked, post bone-fracture, and to patients with unprovoked VTE. Baseline characteristics, presenting signs and symptoms, treatment and outcomes including recurrent VTE, bleeds or death were compared. Abstract

BACKGROUND: The optimal cutoff for systolic blood pressure (SBP) level to define high-risk pulmonary embolism (PE) remains to be defined. METHODS: To evaluate the relationship between SBP levels on admission and mortality in patients with acute symptomatic PE, the current study included 39,257 consecutive patients with acute symptomatic PE from the RIETE registry between 2001 and 2018. Primary outcomes included all-cause and PE-specific 30-day mortality. Secondary outcomes included major bleeding and recurrent venous thromboembolism (VTE). RESULTS: There was a linear inverse relationship between admission SBP and 30-day all-cause and PE-related mortality that persisted after multivariable adjustment. Patients in the lower SBP strata had higher rates of all-cause death (reference: SBP 110-129 mmHg) (adjusted odds ratio [OR] 2.9; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.0-4.2 for SBP 190 mmHg). Consistent findings were also observed for 30-day PE-related death. CONCLUSIONS: In patients with acute symptomatic PE, a low SBP portends an increased risk of all-cause and PE-related mortality. Abstract

Background and aims Sex-specific differences exist for the initial presentation of acute venous thromboembolism (VTE): men are more likely to present with proximal deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in the lower limbs (versus pulmonary embolism [PE] or isolated distal DVT [IDDVT]) than women. We studied in detail the influence of sex, age, and VTE risk factors on the initial presentation of IDDVT versus proximal DVT. Methods A total of 24,911 patients with a first episode of objectively diagnosed acute symptomatic lower-limb DVT (without symptomatic PE) were enrolled in RIETE (years 2000–2017) and included in the present analysis. Results A total of 4266 (17.1%) patients had IDDVT. No trend for more IDDVT diagnoses was observed over time. Women aged 40–69 had a higher proportion of IDDVT, especially between 40 and 49 years (+6.7%; 95CI +3.7%; +9.9%), whereas men had more often proximal DVT. The presenting location of first acute DVT depended on sex, age, and the prevalence and type of VTE risk factors. Recent surgery was independently associated with a diagnosis of IDDVT in both women and men, whereas active cancer and pregnancy were associated with proximal DVT. Conclusions The interaction between age and VTE risk factors influences the presenting location (distal versus proximal) of the first acute lower-limb DVT observed in women and men. Our observations extend to IDDVT the concept that different clinical manifestations of acute VTE may not fully share the same pathophysiological mechanisms: this contributes to explain sex-specific prognostic differences.

Abstract

Corporate attempts to shape government policies so they are favorable to the firm is a widespread occurrence in the tobacco, alcohol, and food industries. Analysis of such corporate political activity has identified various strategies, practices, and mechanisms used by these industries. In this paper, we adapt an established framework to demonstrate the practices of the livestock industry in influencing sustainable diet policies in the U.S. We describe four case studies in which: (1) environmental sustainability was excluded from the Dietary Guidelines for Americans; (2) meat-friendly dietary recommendations were developed with no consideration of environmental impacts; (3) a professional nutrition society position paper was critiqued for recommending a reduction in ruminant animal consumption; and (4) a webinar was disseminated to nutrition professionals recommending beef as a part of a sustainable diet. In the first two cases the livestock industry rejected the importance of environmental considerations for dietary recommendations and in the second two it argued that livestock is an integral part of a sustainable diet, coopting the definition of sustainable diets. An information and messaging strategy was key to all of these cases. This included stressing the economic importance of the livestock industry, framing the debate, and shaping the evidence base on diet and the environment. The livestock industry also used financial incentives and policy substitution to accomplish their goals. Understanding and documenting such behaviors is a key first step in developing an approach to limit corporate influence on sustainable diet policies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Neddylation is a post-translational mechanism that adds a ubiquitin-like protein, namely neural precursor cell expressed developmentally downregulated protein 8 (NEDD8). Here, we show that neddylation in mouse liver is modulated by nutrient availability. Inhibition of neddylation in mouse liver reduces gluconeogenic capacity and the hyperglycemic actions of counter-regulatory hormones. Furthermore, people with type 2 diabetes display elevated hepatic neddylation levels. Mechanistically, fasting or caloric restriction of mice leads to neddylation of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase 1 (PCK1) at three lysine residues—K278, K342, and K387. We find that mutating the three PCK1 lysines that are neddylated reduces their gluconeogenic activity rate. Molecular dynamics simulations show that neddylation of PCK1 could re-position two loops surrounding the catalytic center into an open configuration, rendering the catalytic center more accessible. Our study reveals that neddylation of PCK1 provides a finely tuned mechanism of controlling glucose metabolism by linking whole nutrient availability to metabolic homeostasis. Selective attention to visual-spatial stimuli causes decrements of power in alpha band and increments in beta. For steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEP) selective attention affects electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings, modulating the power in the range 8-27 Hz. The same behaviour can be seen for auditory stimuli as well, although for auditory steady-state response (ASSR), it is not fully confirmed yet. The design of selective attention based braincomputer interfaces (BCIs) has two major advantages: First, no much training is needed. Second, if properly designed, a steady-state response corresponding to spectral peaks can be elicited, easy to filter and classify. Modular Neural Networks (MNN) have shown significant learning improvement over single Neural Networks (NN). For this reason, the use of MNN for pattern recognition is well justified. However, network topology design of MNN is at least an order of magnitude more difficult than for classical NNs. We describe in this paper the use of a Hierarchical Genetic Algorithm (HGA) for optimizing the topology of each of the neural network modules of the MNN. The HGA is clearly needed due to the fact that topology optimization requires that we are able to manage both the layer and node information for each of the MNN modules. Abstract

We describe in this paper the application of several neural network architectures to the problem of simulating and predicting the dynamic behavior of complex economic time series. We use several neural network models and training algorithms to compare the results and decide at the end, which one is best for this application. We also compare the simulation results with the traditional approach of using a statistical model. In this case, we use real time series of prices of consumer goods to test our models. Abstract: Krüppel-like factor 4 (KLF4) is a zinc-finger-type transcription factor expressed in a range of tissues that plays multiple functions. We report that hypothalamic KLF4 represents a new transcription factor specifically modulating agouti-related protein (AgRP) expression in vivo. Hypothalamic KLF4 colocalizes with AgRP neurons and is modulated by nutritional status and leptin. Over-expression of KLF4 in the hypothalamic arcuate nucleus (ARC) induces food intake and increases body weight through the specific stimulation of AgRP, as well as blunting leptin sensitivity in lean rats independent of forkhead box protein 01 (FoxO1). Down-regulation of KLF4 in the ARC inhibits fasting-induced food intake in both lean and diet-induced obese (DIO) rats. Silencing KLF4, however, does not, on its own, enhance peripheral leptin sensitivity in DIO rats. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
