Abstract

The Planck High Frequency Instrument (HFI) is designed to measure the temperature and polarization anisotropies of the Cosmic Microwave Background and galactic foregrounds in six wide bands centered at 100, 143, 217, 353, 545 and 857 GHz at an angular resolution of 10' (100 GHz), 7' (143 GHz), and 5' (217 GHz and higher). HFI has been operating flawlessly since launch on 14 May 2009. The bolometers cooled to 100 mK as planned. The settings of the readout electronics, such as the bolometer bias current, that optimize HFI's noise performance on orbit are nearly the same as the ones chosen during ground testing. Observations of Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn verified both the optical system and the time response of the detection chains. The optical beams are close to predictions from physical optics modeling. The time response of the detection chains is close to pre-launch measurements. The detectors suffer from an unexpected high flux of cosmic rays related to low solar activity. Due to the redundancy of Planck's observations strategy, the removal of a few percent of data contaminated by glitches does not affect significantly the sensitivity. The cosmic rays heat up significantly the bolometer plate and the modulation on periods of days to months of the heat load creates a common drift of all bolometer signals which do not affect the scientific capabilities. Abstract

The settings of the readout electronics, including bolometer bias currents, that optimize HFI’s noise performance on orbit are nearly the same as the ones chosen during ground testing. Observations of Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn have confirmed that the optical beams and the time responses of the detection chains are in good agreement with the predictions of physical optics modeling and pre-launch measurements. The Detectors suffer from a high flux of cosmic rays due to historically low levels of solar activity. As a result of the redundancy of Planck’s observation strategy, the removal of a few percent of data contaminated by glitches does not significantly affect the instrumental sensitivity. The cosmic ray flux represents a significant and variable heat load on the sub-Kelvin stage. Temporal variation and the inhomogeneous distribution of the flux results in thermal fluctuations that are a probable source of low frequency noise. The removal of systematic effects in the time ordered data provides a signal with an average noise equivalent power that is 70% of the goal in the 0.6−2.5 Hz range. This is slightly higher than was achieved during the pre-launch characterization but better than predicted in the early phases of the project. The improvement over the goal is a result of the low level of instrumental background loading achieved by the optical and thermal design of the HFI.

Abstract

Planck is a European Space Agency (ESA) satellite, launched in May 2009, which is mapping the Cosmic Microwave Background anisotropies in intensity and polarisation with unprecedented detail and sensitivity. It will also provide full-sky maps of astrophysical foregrounds. An accurate knowledge of the telescope beam patterns is an essential element for a correct analysis of the acquired astrophysical data. We present the optical design of the High Frequency Instrument (HFI) together with the optical performances measured during the ground calibration campaigns. We report on the evolution of the knowledge of the pre-launch HFI beam patterns when coupled to the telescope, and on their significance for the HFI data analysis procedure.

Abstract

This paper presents the technical aspects and scientific objectives of the balloon-borne Experiment for Large Infrared Survey Astronomy (ELISA). The emphasis is put upon the synergies existing between the ELISA project and future space missions, both with respect to technical and scientific aspects. ELISA is a small balloon project for an experiment dedicated to measure the Far-Infrared to Sub-millimeter continuum emission of dust over a large fraction of the sky, with unprecedented sensitivity and angular resolution. The primary mirror of the telescope, similar to the one used for the Top-Hat mission, will have a diameter of 1 m, ensuring an angular resolution of about 3.5[sup ′]. PACS-type bolometer arrays will be used in four photometric bands centered at 170, 240, 400, and 650 μm and providing a 22[sup ′]×45[sup ′] instantaneous field of view per channel. A liquid He cryostat will host the cold optics, including the secondary mirror of the telescope, as well as the detectors, which will be cooled to 0.3 K using an He3 close-cycle fridge. Mapping of the sky will be accomplished by rotating the gondola over a large azimuth range (up to 60 degree amplitude). The pointing of the experiment will be maintained to a constant elevation during the azimuth scans through a feed back loop using the signal from a large format, fast stellar sensor, operating day and night. The scientific goal of the experiment is to map the diffuse Sub-millimeter emission along a large fraction of the Milky Way. The astronomical data obtained will be used to derive the emission properties of the dust grains in the Interstellar Medium (ISM), such as their temperature and emissivity. It will also allow to systematically measure the polarization of the dust emission. Abstract

The infrared fluorescence decay and the dispersed emission spectrum are presented for gaseous benzene following 193 nm laser excitation. They were measured with FIREFLY (Fluorescence in the InfraRed from Excited FLYing molecules), a new home-made spectrometer. Redshift and redtail in the CH stretch emission spectra (3.3 µm region) demonstrate that anharmonicity plays a key role when dealing with high internal energies, as it is the case in the interstellar medium. Abstract

BepiColombo, an European Space Agency (ESA) mission being conducted in cooperation with the Japan space agency, will explore Mercury with a set of eleven instruments onboard the spacecraft Mercury Planetary Orbiter (MPO). Among them, SIMBIO-SYS (Spectrometers and Imagers for MPO BepiColombo Integrated Observatory SYStem) is a complex instrument that will provide images and spectra in the 400–2000 nm wavelength range of the entire surface of Mercury. Pre-flight calibration of the SYMBIO-SYS instrument is mandatory for reliable scientific interpretation of images and spectra returned from the planet Mercury. This paper presents the calibration device designed and implemented for the specific requirements of this instrument. It mainly consists of a thermal vacuum chamber simulating the space environment, an optical bench collecting calibration sources and optical elements that simulate the conditions of Mercury observations, mechanical interfaces used for positioning the three channels inside the vacuum chamber, thermal interfaces to explore the operating temperatures, computer interfaces that allow to communicate with both the instrument and the calibration elements and synchronize the calibrations sequences with the status of the calibration device. As the major goal is the characterization of the radiometric performances of the three channels of SIMBIO-SYS, radiometric performances of the test setup evaluated by simulations and measurements are emphasized. 22 páginas, 16 figuras, 6 tablas.-- Planck Science Team: et al., The European Space Agency's Planck satellite, launched on 14 May 2009, is the third-generation space experiment in the field of cosmic microwave background (CMB) research. It will image the anisotropies of the CMB over the whole sky, with unprecedented sensitivity ( ~ 2 × 10-6) and angular resolution (~5 arcmin). Planck will provide a major source of information relevant to many fundamental cosmological problems and will test current theories of the early evolution of the Universe and the origin of structure. It will also address a wide range of areas of astrophysical research related to the Milky Way as well as external galaxies and clusters of galaxies. The ability of Planck to measure polarization across a wide frequency range (30-350 GHz), with high precision and accuracy, and over the whole sky, will provide unique insight, not only into specific cosmological questions, but also into the properties of the interstellar medium. This paper is part of a series which describes the technical capabilities of the Planck scientific payload. It is based on the knowledge gathered during the on-ground calibration campaigns of the major subsystems, principally its telescope and its two scientific instruments, and of tests at fully integrated satellite level. It represents the best estimate before launch of the technical performance that the satellite and its payload will achieve in flight. In this paper, we summarise the main elements of the payload performance, which is described in detail in the accompanying papers. In addition, we describe the satellite performance elements which are most relevant for science, and provide an overview of the plans for scientific operations and data analysis.

19. Polarization sensitivity of the SUMER instrument on SOHO.

Abstract

The Solar Ultraviolet Measurements of Emitted Radiation (SUMER) instrument on the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) satellite is sensitive to the state of linear polarization of the incident radiation primarily owing to two optical elements, the holographic grating and the wavelength scan mirror. The large angle of incidence of light striking the scan mirror, which varies from roughly 73.3 degrees to 81.6 degrees (with respect to the mirror normal), causes the mirror to act as a linear polarizer. Similarly, the spectrometer grating operates at incidence angles between 16.7 degrees and 35.0 degrees , adding to the polarization effect at some wavelengths. Measurement and characterization of this polarization sensitivity as a function of wavelength were performed with the engineering model optics (scan mirror and grating) and synchrotron radiation, which is nearly 100% linearly polarized, from the Super Anneau de Collisions d'Orsay (SUPERACO) positron storage ring in Orsay. The polarization sensitivity or modulation factor of the SUMER instrument was found to be between 0.4 and 0.6, depending on the wavelength and the angle of incidence of light striking the scan mirror; this agrees with the calculated polarization properties based on the measured optical constants for the silicon carbide mirror and grating.
