Abstract

The case provides a realistic scenario that can be used in a systems analysis and design, accounting information systems or graduate level management information systems course. The case details the steps in the revenue and expense cycle processes of a health supply wholesale company providing students with the opportunity to map the business process data flows. Multiple assignment options are provided allowing instructors to select an assignment based upon course material coverage. Suggested assignments include the development of data flow diagrams, swimlane diagrams, a request for proposal and a response to the request for proposal, and database design and development artifacts. 35. Soil priming effect in the organic and mineral layers regulated by nitrogen mining mechanism in a temperate forest.

Abstract

Soil organic carbon (SOC) in temperate forests is a crucial part of the global C cycle. The C and nitrogen (N) inputs may greatly increase in forest ecosystems affected by atmospheric CO2 concentration, N deposition, and other climate change, which may further affect SOC dynamics in temperate forests. Nevertheless, how C and N inputs interact to influence the soil priming effect (PE) in the organic and mineral layers of temperate forests remains unclear. Here, we used easily available C and N sources, such as 13C‐glucose with 2% SOC contents and ammonium nitrate (input C:N ratio = 10), to examine the effects and mechanisms of exogenous C and N inputs on soil CO2 production and PE in both soil layers of a temperate forest. Our research revealed that exogenous C input caused a positive PE in both soil layers, with the mineral layer showing a larger PE per unit of SOC than the organic layer (OL). Although C input increased C loss from native SOC, soil net C accumulation still increased. The C and N inputs decreased the soil PE in both soil layers, suggesting that N input alleviates substrate N limitation and weakens microbial N mining in both soil layers. Meanwhile, the C and N inputs increased the exogenous C remaining in the organic layer, which was beneficial for soil C sequestration. Compared to the organic layer, the response of the mineral layer to C and N inputs was weaker. This study suggests that C and N interact to affect PE on SOC decomposition and this interaction should be considered in modeling and prediction of soil C cycling. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Introduction: N‐acetylcysteine (NAC) augmentation of antipsychotic medication has been studied in psychotic disorders but the results are inconsistent. This meta‐analysis aimed to evaluate the efficacy and acceptability of NAC as an augmentation strategy for psychotic disorders. Methods: PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE, PsycINFO, Cochrane Library, and ClinicalTrials.gov were searched until the date of November 28, 2022. The inclusion criteria were randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing NAC and placebo in patients with psychotic disorders. The outcomes were the psychotic symptoms measured by the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) and drop‐out rates. Results: A total of 594 patients from eight trials were included. The results showed that no difference was found in score changes of PANSS total, positive, negative, or general psychopathology scale scores between the NAC group and placebo group in both time points (≤24 weeks and >24 weeks). There was also no statistical difference in drop‐out rates between the two groups. Conclusion: For the moment, it is not appropriate to recommend NAC as an augmentation of antipsychotic medication to treat psychotic disorders in routine clinical practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Nitrogen (N) resorption is an important pathway of N conservation, contributing to an important proportion of plant N requirement. However, whether the ratio of N resorption to N requirement may be affected by environmental factors, mycorrhizal types or atmospheric CO2 concentration remains unclear. Here, we conducted a meta‐analysis on the impacts of environmental factors and mycorrhizal types on this ratio. We found this ratio in ectomycorrhizal (EM) trees decreased with mean annual precipitation, mean annual temperature, soil total N content and atmospheric CO2 concentration and was significantly lower than that in arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) trees. An in situ15N tracing experiment further confirmed that AM trees have a stronger reliance on N resorption than EM trees. Our study suggests that AM and EM trees potentially have different strategies for alleviation of progressive N limitation, highlighting the necessity of incorporating plant mycorrhizal types into Earth System Models.
