Abstract The incidence of hyponatremia after spinal cord injury was reported to be between 25 and 80%. Hyponatremia can lead to a variety of clinical symptoms, from mild to severe and even life-threatening. Hyponatremia is often associated with diabetes insipidus, which refers to insufficient arginine vasopressin (AVP) secretion or defective renal response to AVP, with clinical manifestations of syndromes such as hypoosmolality, polydipsia, and polydipsia. Recent mechanistic studies on hyponatremia and diabetes insipidus after acute spinal cord injury have been performed in isolation, without integrating the above two symptoms into different pathological manifestations that occur in the same injury state and without considering the acute spinal cord injury patient’s condition as a whole. The therapeutic principles of CSWS and SIADH are in opposition to one another. It is not easy to identify the mechanism of hyponatremia in clinical practice, which makes selecting the treatment difficult. According to the existing theories, treatments for hyponatremia and diabetes insipidus together are contraindicated, whether the mechanism of hyponatremia is thought to be CSWS or SIADH. In this paper, we review the mechanism of these two pathological manifestations and suggest that our current understanding of the mechanisms of hyponatremia and diabetes insipidus after high acute cervical SCI is insufficient, and it is likely that there are other undetected pathogenetic mechanisms.

The conversion of lignocellulosic biomass into various high-value chemicals has been a rapid expanding research topic in industry and agriculture. Among them, alkaline removal and utilization of lignin are important for the accelerated degradation of biomass. Modern biorefinery has been focusing the vision on the advancement of economical, green, and environmentally friendly processes. Therefore, it is indispensable to develop cost-effective and simple biomass conversion technologies to obtain high-value products. In this study, the black liquor (BL) obtained from the alkaline pretreatment of biomass was added to polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) solution and used to prepare degradable ultraviolet (UV) shielding films, achieving direct and efficient utilization of the aqueous phase from alkaline pretreatment. This method avoids the extraction step of lignin fraction from black liquor, which can be directly utilized as the raw materials of films preparation. In addition, the direct use of alkaline BL results in films with similar UV-shielding properties, higher physical strength, and similar thermal stability compared with films made by commercial alkaline lignin. Therefore, this strategy is proposed for alkaline-pretreated biorefineries as a simple way to convert waste BL into valuable products and partially recover unconsumed sodium hydroxide to achieve as much integration of biomass and near zero-waste biorefineries as possible.

Background. IgA nephropathy (IgAN) is currently the most common primary glomerular disease, accounting for approximately 36.7% to 58.2% of primary glomerular disease in kidney biopsies in China. Definitive diagnosis depends on immunopathological examination of the kidney. The prognosis of this disease was generally considered to be good, but recent studies have found that about half of patients can progress to end-stage renal disease within 30 years of onset. Because the pathogenesis is unknown, there is no specific treatment. Objective. To evaluate the efficacy and safety of glycosides of Tripterygium wilfordii (GTW) in combination with renin-angiotensin system (RAS) inhibitors for the treatment of IgAN. Methods. Search Embase, Pubmed, Cochrane, CNKI, Web of Science, Wanfang, and VIP for all randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on treating IgAN with RASI from the self-built database to December 2021. Relevant data were searched and collected separately by two reviewers. The Cochrane risk of bias model was used for quality assessment, and RevMan 5.3 was used for data analysis. Results. Thirteen Chinese publications with a total of 958 patients were finally included. There was no statistically significant difference in baseline information (including laboratory data and clinical parameters) between the two groups of patients. The urine protein quantification in both groups showed a significant decreasing trend as the treatment duration increased. At 3, 6, 9, and 12 months after treatment, urine protein was significantly lower than the baseline value in both the observation and control groups (P 0.05). Patients with CKD stage 2 achieved a higher remission rate compared with patients with CKD stage 3, with a statistically significant difference (P 0.05). During the follow-up period, there was no statistically significant difference in urine protein quantification, Scr, and eGFR between the two groups. This study investigated the effects of organic loading rates (OLRs) and temperature on the performance and stability of anaerobic digestion treating the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) in a semi-continuous mode. Furthermore, a preliminary energy analysis was conducted to determine the optimal application parameters for anaerobic digestion of OFMSW. Results showed that the maximum achievable OLR was 9.00 g VS/(L·d), with a volumetric biogas yield of 4.03 L/(L·d) and 4.31 L/(L·d) for mesophilic and thermophilic systems, respectively. However, the preliminary energy analysis showed higher energy conversion efficiency was achieved for the system operated at an OLR of 7.50 g VS/(L·d). The system operated at the thermophilic condition had a higher total energy due to more electricity and heat energy generated than the mesophilic one. Therefore, the recommended operating conditions for the anaerobic digestion of OFMSW is an OLR of 7.50 g VS/(L·d) and thermophilic condition. Based on the annual yield of OFMSW in China, the estimated net output energy was 69970.61 GWh per year.

In this study, the links between performance and microbial communities were investigated with municipal solid waste (MSW) at two feedstock ratios and eight organic loading rates (OLRs). The co-digestion systems were stably operated at OLRs of 2.0–6.0 g VS/(L·d). The performance of the co-digestion system varied with the feedstock ratio. Compared with the 50:50 (hybrid Pennisetum:MSW) system, the 75:50 system, GM31, obtained increases of 1.93–17.68% and 0.29–23.29% for the specific biogas and methane yields, respectively. Whereas a shift in bacterial and methanogen communities occurred as the operating conditions changed, particularly with OLR variations. The genera Saccharofermentans, Prevotella, Clostridium, Syntrophomonas, and Proteiniphilum became the dominant bacteria for the conversion of carbohydrates and nitrogen compounds as the OLR increased. Meanwhile, a shift from acetoclastic to hydrogenotrophic or multifunctional methanogens was observed.

Material flow analysis (MFA) was applied to study the process of biogas production from switchgrass using a mid-temperature (35 ± 1 °C) batch anaerobic digestion process. The flow distributions of energy and material, including carbon (C) and nitrogen (N), were analyzed, as were the material and energy conversion efficiencies. The results showed that biogas and CH4 production were 268.80 and 135.31 NmLgVS-1 added, respectively, and the average CH4 content in biogas was 50.34%. Based on the MFA of the anaerobic digestion process, 30.6%, 3.6%, and 65.8% of C was converted into biogas, biogas slurry, and biogas residue, respectively; and 11.7% and 88.3% of N was converted into biogas slurry and biogas residue, respectively. The conversion efficiencies of the material and energy from switchgrass to biogas were 36.1% and 30.1%. Because of the low conversion efficiencies of matter and energy during biogas production, it is necessary to strengthen the secondary use of the fermentation residue. This study provides a basis for the optimization of the anaerobic digestion process and efficient utilization of resources and energy of energy-grass.

Accumulating evidence indicated that aberrantly expressed microRNAs play critical roles in the initiation and progression of human cancers. However, the underlying functions of miR-493 in human melanoma remains unknown. Here, our study found that miR-493 expression was downregulated in human melanoma tissues and cells. Overexpression of miR-493 suppressed cell proliferation and cell cycle in human melanoma cell line A375. IRS4 was defined as a target for downregulation by miR-493 and was confirmed by luciferase assay. We also found that knockdown of IRS4 counteracted the proliferation promotion by miR-493 inhibitor. In summary, these results demonstrated that miR-493 acts as a tumor suppressor and inhibits cell proliferation and cell cycle in human melanoma by directly targeting IRS4.

In 2009 two RCTs were publicated to question the efficacy of vertebroplasty comparing with sham treatment (ST) in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), which provoked an academic debate on the efficacy of PVA. The purposes of our study were to compare clinical differences in pain relief, spinal functional outcomes, and overall quality of life between PVA and CT for painful osteoporotic VCFs.We searched PubMed, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials and Web of Knowledge from January 1980 to June 2013 with Medical Subject Headings terms and keywords. Risk of bias in the included studies was assessed in accordance with the Cochrane risk of bias tool. In this Meta-analysis dichotomous and continuous variables were calculated using the risk ratio (RR) and standardized mean difference (SMD), respectively.Eight studies involving 987 patients met the criteria for inclusion. BackgroundPeripheral vascular disease (PVD) is a common complication in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Early detection or prediction the risk of developing PVD is important for clinical decision-making.PurposeThis study aims to establish and validate PVD risk prediction models and perform risk factor analysis for PVD in patients with T2DM using machine learning and Shapley Additive Explanation(SHAP) based on electronic health records.MethodsWe retrospectively analyzed the data from 4,372 inpatients with diabetes in a hospital between January 1, 2021, and March 28, 2023. The data comprised demographic characteristics, discharge diagnoses and biochemical index test results. After data preprocessing and feature selection using Recursive Feature Elimination(RFE), the dataset was split into training and testing sets at a ratio of 8:2, with the Synthetic Minority Over-sampling Technique(SMOTE) employed to balance the training set. Six machine learning(ML) algorithms, including decision tree (DT), logistic regression (LR), random forest (RF), support vector machine(SVM),extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) and Adaptive Boosting(AdaBoost) were applied to construct PVD prediction models. A grid search with 10-fold cross-validation was conducted to optimize the hyperparameters. Metrics such as accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, G-mean, and the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) assessed the models’ effectiveness. The SHAP method interpreted the best-performing model.ResultsRFE identified the optimal 12 predictors. The XGBoost model outperformed other five ML models, with an AUC of 0.945, G-mean of 0.843, accuracy of 0.890, precision of 0.930, recall of 0.927, and F1-score of 0.928. The feature importance of ML models and SHAP results indicated that Hemoglobin (Hb), age, total bile acids (TBA) and lipoprotein(a)(LP-a) are the top four important risk factors for PVD in T2DM.ConclusionThe machine learning approach successfully developed a PVD risk prediction model with good performance. The model identified the factors associated with PVD and offered physicians an intuitive understanding on the impact of key features in the model.

The expansion and intensification of human activities have resulted in excessive nitrogen (N) in rivers, causing worldwide concern. To effectively manage agricultural non-point source pollution and ensure a safe drinking water supply in watersheds, it is crucial to trace and quantify the primary sources and spatial distribution patterns of N. In response to the challenge of unclear sources and agricultural non-point source pollution, this study utilised the Bayesian isotope mixing model and Soil and Water Assessment Toolmodel to identify the dominant nitrate sources and transformation processes. These models were employed to quantify N retention by the mainstream and tributaries in the Bai River Basin, which directly impacts the safety of drinking water in Beijing. Total N (TN) concentrations in the Yunzhou Reservoir (4.22 ± 0.04 mg.L˗1) and Miyun Reservoir (2.88 ± 0.62 mg.L˗1) inlets in autumn and winter were V class (2 mg.L˗1) category as per GB 3838–2002 standards. This implies higher risks of eutrophication and algal blooms exceeding the standards at individual points and seasons in the Bai River. Fertilisers were the main nitrate source in the Bai River Basin, contributing 44.6% during the dry season and 62.9% during the wet season, suggesting that nitrate is more susceptible to leaching and runoff during rainy periods. Rainfall was not a major contributor, with only 3.2% and 2.9% originating from the Hebei and Beijing areas of the Bai River, respectively. Annually, the Bai River Basin exports loads of approximately 629.3 t.a˗1 of TN and 433.7 t.a˗1 of organic N (Org-N) from the Bai River Basin land to the river. The TN and Org-N loads at the final destination in the Miyun Reservoir were 521.3 t.a˗1 and 100.3 t.a˗1, respectively. Of the exported TN and Org-N, 17.16% and 76.87%, respectively, were retained in the river network. Consequently, N transformation occurred in the Bai River, with nitrification–denitrification being particularly dominant. Nitrification was more evident in the nitrate-enriched river.

The thermal performance of a novel exterior coating material for commonly used grain and food-grain oil structures was investigated. Grain structures included a concrete squat silo and a concrete warehouse while the edible oil structure was a concrete sided tank. The exterior coating provided excellent moisture runoff and solar reflectance properties and is best described as a superamphiphobic self-cleaning passive subambient daytime radiative cooling (SSC-PSDRC) coating. The coating exhibited a remarkable subambient daytime cooling effect in various structures in different climatic regions. Compared with the roof surface temperatures of a cool white-coated concrete grain silo and a gray carbon iron-based edible oil storage tank, those of the PSDRC coated top surfaces could be reduced by 37 °C and 33 °C, respectively. The roof surface temperature of a warehouse painted with a cool-white coating—with a solar reflectance of 0.9 and an emissivity of 0.85—and that of a warehouse with the roof installed with aluminised polymer waterproof membranes were 19 °C and 18 °C higher than that of the PSDRC warehouse, respectively. Consequently, the interior temperature of the wheat pile in the PSDRC grain silo was 10 °C lower than that in the control squat silo. With the inner loop flow temperature control system operating, the interior air temperatures of the PSDRC west-facing separate space were 6 °C and 3 °C higher than those of the cool-white coated and control west-facing separate spaces, respectively. Even after the application of PSDRC coating for only a few days, the interior air temperature of the PSDRC oil storage tank was reduced by 38 °C, and the interior temperature of the oil storage tank was reduced by 4 °C. Furthermore, in practical applications, the coating showed impressive superamphiphobic self-cleaning capabilities and super aging resistance. The wide applications of the coating would have far-reaching, global implications for maintaining grain and edible oil products, particularly in the sub-tropical climates.

Rose root rot disease caused by Pythium helicoides Dreehsler has brought heavy damage to cut rose production in Japan, and il has became apparent that Rosa mullijlora showed resistance to this disease. Hoses have been bred by interspecies crossing with Rosa species including of R. mullijlora, and many progenies of R. mullijlora have been bred as determined cluster-flowered roses. However, the genetic architecture of this resistance remains. So, in this study, four kinds of R. mullijlora and 21 rose cultivars that have been clarified in the cross-fertilization genealogy with R. mullijlora were used as plant materials, and ihe inheritability of resistance to root rot disease was investigated. Four kinds of R. mullijlora had all high resistance, and ihe resistance to root rot disease in R. mullijlora was inherent eliaraeteristic of species. Five varieties not less tlian 50% in relatedness with R. mullijlora were shown as varied ' resistant' and 'moderately resistant. Therefore, ihe inherent resistant characteristic in R. mullijlora was not controlled by single major gene, and ihe resislibility in R. mullijlora was not cytoplasmic but nuclear heredity. Although there was significant neUive relation between relative root rot severity and relatedness with R. mullijlora, the variance of relative root rot severity had tendency to expand as relatedness with R. mullijlora reduced. This result, therefore, indicated that the contingency of resistance expression increased as the relaledness with R. mullijlora was reduced. The varieties having low degree of relaledness with R. mullijlora had similar relative root rot severity with R. mullijlora. This study empirically examines the interplay between market integration and economic growth across nine cities within the Pearl River Delta urban agglomeration. The findings indicate that the city cluster's market integration negatively impacts regional economic development and has a negligible effect on the surrounding areas. In response, the research recommends the elimination of market trade barriers and a reduction in local protectionism within the city cluster. Additionally, infrastructure enhancement is essential to leverage the distinct comparative advantages of each city within the Pearl River Delta urban agglomeration. An efficient collaboration mechanism is crucial to amplify the collective economic potency of the region.

Anaerobic digestion (AD) operating under conditions of organic overload stress typically exacerbates the potential for process instability, thereby resulting in significant economic and ecological ramifications. In this investigation, an augmented substrate-to-inoculum ratio (S/I) along with varying total solid content (TS) levels was employed to replicate diverse organic loadings, utilizing maize straw and cattle manure. The findings reveal that a moderate augmentation in S/I and TS proves advantageous in augmenting methane yield, while an excessive substrate loading diminishes methane yield, hampers the kinetics of methane production, and even induces severe process instability. Kinetic study also displayed the variation of the model parameters for the first-order model, the modified Gompertze model, and the transfer function model. Both the modified Gompertze model and transfer function model exhibited the same environmental stress trend. Thus, both the increase in particulate content and the increase in S/I had a substantial effect on the substrate conversion rate to methane. Microbial analysis demonstrates the dominant influence of Firmicutes and Methanosarcina under different organic loading stresses. From both a kinetic and a microbiological point of view, this work provides novel insights into the fundamental processes that regulate anaerobic digestion (AD) under varying loading stress. Foamed ceramics with five different bulk densities are systematically investigated and new models are proposed to quantify the relationships between pore structure and material properties. Experimental data from our study and published literature are adopted to compare the fitting models. The results demonstrate that pore structure is important in controlling the thermal and mechanical properties and the models developed in this work are superior to others, especially for mechanical aspects. The pore structure optimization is exemplified for a hypothetical engineering case where specific property requirements are exerted, and a balance between thermal and mechanical performance has been successfully achieved.

This study introduces the self-construction methods of consumers and the tendency characteristics of experiential purchase to study the effects of physical purchase and experiential purchase on wellbeing. The dependent self-builders obtain higher happiness from experiential purchase; however, the independent self-builders get higher happiness from physical purchase. Furthermore, consumers with a high purchase experience get higher happiness from experiential purchase. Consumers with high material consumption tendency get significantly higher happiness than physical purchase from experiential purchase. Consumers with high materialism tendency gain higher happiness in experiential purchase, which is in line with the expectations of self-construction and consumption theories. This study provides the first evidence for the impact of self-construction methods on wellbeing with different consumption choices.

The biomass yield and mesophilic anaerobic digestion performance of Pennisetum hybrid that were collected at different harvest periods and cutting frequencies were investigated. Results indicated that chemical composition, biomass yield, and specific methane yield of Pennisetum hybrid were significantly influenced by harvest period and cutting frequency. The contents of total solids, volatile solids, carbon, cellulose, lignin and starch increased with a prolonged harvest period, whereas the nitrogen and crude protein content decreased. Specific methane yields decreased considerably from 280 to 119 mL/g VS with a prolonged harvest period, whereas the biomass yield per hectare increased. A maximum dry matter yield of 41.63 t/ha was achieved when the Pennisetum hybrid was harvested in October. When the cutting frequencies increased from twice to three times per year, the specific methane yields increased as the biomass yield decreased. Because of the reverse trend of anaerobic digestion performance and biomass yield with different harvest periods and cutting frequencies, the methane yield per hectare increased with prolonged harvest period and decreased cutting frequency. A maximum area-specific methane yield of 4,466  m3 was obtained; the corresponding energy production per hectare was approximately 169.71 Gj. Methane yield from the Pennisetum hybrid in southern China suggested that this grass could be an alternative feedstock for biogas production. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: NAD(P)H:quinone oxidoreductase (NQO1) is a flavoprotein that catalyzes two-electron reduction and detoxification of quinones and its derivatives. NQO1 catalyzes reactions that have a protective effect against redox cycling, oxidative stress and neoplasia. High expression of NQO1 is associated with many solid tumors including those affecting the colon, breast and pancreas; however, its role in the progression of ovarian carcinoma is largely undefined. This study aimed to investigate the clinicopathological significance of high NQO1 expression in serous ovarian carcinoma. Methods: NQO1 protein expression was assessed using immunohistochemical (IHC) staining in 160 patients with serous ovarian carcinoma, 62 patients with ovarian borderline tumors and 53 patients with benign ovarian tumors. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) was performed to detect NQO1 mRNA expression levels. The correlation between high NQO1 expression and clinicopathological features of ovarian carcinoma was evaluated by Chi-square and Fisher's exact test. Overall survival (OS) rates of all of ovarian carcinoma patients were calculated using the Kaplan-Meier method, and univariate and multivariate analyses were performed using the Cox proportional hazards regression model. Results: NQO1 protein expression in ovarian carcinoma cells was predominantly cytoplasmic. Strong, positive expression of NQO1 protein was observed in 63.8% (102/160) of ovarian carcinomas, which was significantly higher than in borderline serous tumors (32.3%, 20/62) or benign serous tumors (11.3%, 6/53). Importantly, the rate of strong, positive NQO1 expression in borderline serous tumors was also higher than in benign serous tumors. High expression of NQO1 protein was closely associated with higher histological grade, advanced clinical stage and lower OS rates in ovarian carcinomas. Moreover, multivariate analysis indicated that NQO1 was a significant independent prognostic factor, in addition to clinical stage, in patients with ovarian carcinoma. Conclusions: NQO1 is frequently upregulated in ovarian carcinoma. High express in of NQO1 protein may be an effective biomarker for poor prognostic evaluation of patients with serous ovarian carcinomas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With the development of China’s economy and the improvement of national income level, people’s living demands have shifted from food and clothing to happiness, so happiness has become an important indicator to measure the performance of government performance. Scientific measure of residents’ happiness is an important research topic for scholars, but the academic quantitative research on Chinese residents’ happiness is less. A few quantitative studies often focus on the happiness of a single study subject at some time, and this paper uses the fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method to measure the nine cities in 2011–2018, not only the comparative happiness between horizontal cities and cities, and the study data longitudinal span from 2011 to 2018. A comparative study of multiple objects across space-time was conducted. Empirical results show that the happiness level of urban residents in the Pearl River Delta has three characteristics: regional structure differentiation, urban group aggregation, and siphon effect in central cities, and the corresponding policy suggestions are put forward according to the results of the empirical research.

The hydraulic accumulator has the advantages of high power density, fast response, stable operation and high cost performance. However, compared with the electric energy storage method, the hydraulic accumulator has low energy density and large pressure fluctuation while absorbing and discharging energy, which severely limits its application in hydraulic excavators. To improve the potential energy loss of the boom during the lowering process, an electro-hydraulic drive and energy recovery system for excavator booms (EHDR-EEB) based on a battery and accumulator is proposed. As a result, a simulation model of the electro-hydraulic drive and energy management strategy of a 1.6 t pure electric hydraulic excavator is built to investigate the energy regeneration and utilization. The simulation outcomes show that the potential energy recovery rate is as high as 92%. This research on EHDR-EEB makes a significant contribution to the economic improvement of electric hydraulic excavators.

Abstract Background The rational design of theranostic nanoprobe to present responsive effect of therapeutic potency and enhanced diagnostic imaging in tumor milieu plays a vital role for efficient personalized cancer therapy and other biomedical applications. We aimed to afford a potential strategy to pose both T1- and T2-weighted MRI functions, and thereby realizing imaging guided drug delivery and targeted therapy. Results Theranostic nanocomposites Mn-porphyrin&Fe3O4@SiO2@PAA-cRGD were fabricated and characterized, and the nanocomposites were effectively used in T1- and T2-weighted MRI and pH-responsive drug release. Fluorescent imaging also showed that the nanocomposites specifically accumulated in lung cancer cells by a receptor-mediated process, and were nontoxic to normal cells. The r2/r1 ratio was 20.6 in neutral pH 7.4, which decreased to 7.7 in acidic pH 5.0, suggesting the NCs could act as an ideal T1/T2 dual-mode contrast agent at acidic environments of tumor. For in vivo MRI, T1 and T2 relaxation was significantly accelerated to 55 and 37%, respectively, in the tumor after i.v. injection of nanocomposites. Conclusion The synthesized nanocomposites exhibited highly sensitive MRI contrast function no matter in solution, cells or in vivo by synergistically enhancing positive and negative magnetic resonance imaging signals. The nanocomposites showed great potential for integrating imaging diagnosis and drug controlled release into one composition and providing real-time imaging with greatly enhanced diagnostic accuracy during targeted therapy.

Abstract: Anaerobic digestion (AD) technology for rice straw conversion to biogas was investigated for biomass utilization and bioenergy generation. The effects of solid concentration in different temperatures on AD efficiency were conducted in bottle-tests, these tests showed that higher biogas production was achieved at the mesophilic temperature. Biogas production was inhibited under thermophilic conditions, and lowest biogas production was achieved in dry thermophilic conditions. According to bottle-test results, the dry AD at ambient condition was selected for 1m3 experiment. For pilot-test, the highest methane content, total methane production and methane yield rate were 62%, 9.5m3 and 239.7L/kg VS, respectively. We report on the realization of modulation transfer spectroscopy on the D2 transition of 133Cs for frequency stabilization of the 852 nm distributed Bragg reflector diode lasers. Proper modulation frequency, optimal pump and probe beam power are investigated according to the peak-to-peak amplitude and the slope of the modulation transfer spectroscopy signals. The laser frequency can be locked robustly for more than one day. The beat signal between two independent lasers has a frequency drift of 716 kHz at 5000 s. The result shows that the fractional frequency instability of the locked laser falls below 5  ×  10−11 at 1000 s averaging time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context • Evidence from multiple studies has revealed that it’s meaningful to evaluate the clinical significance of CD146 because it’s related to an early diagnosis of chronic renal failure as well as to the severity of illness and the patient’s prognosis. Objective • The current study intended to evaluate the therapeutic effects of Shendibushen on the clinical parameters of blood and urine and on fibrosis in the kidney in a rat model, using simulated renal tissue fibrosis that was surgically induced with unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO). Also, our research team intended to analyze the metabolic pathway activated by Shendibushen both in rat and human kidneys through use of the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) database and the GeneNetwork. The aim is to discover if a connection existed between CD146 and key genes in these pathways. Design • The research team conducted an animal study in Wistar rats. Intervention • The rats were divided into 5 groups of 14 animals each: (1) blank control group, (2) sham control group, (3) model group, (4) Niaoduqing group, and (5) Shendibushen group. Three groups had UUO surgically induced—the model, Niaoduqing, and Shendibushen groups. The sham control group received sham surgery, and the blank control group received no surgery. The Shendibushen and Niaoduqing groups received the relevant capsules once a day at a fixed time, for a total of 28 days. Outcome Measures • The levels of serum creatinine, blood urea nitrogen, microalbuminuria, serum soluble CD146, and urinary soluble CD146 were measured on the 14th and 28th days after modeling the rats. The degree of renal interstitial fibrosis was examined by hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining and Masson trichrome staining. The changes at transcriptome level were obtained by target tissue sequencing. The KEGG database was used to analyze the potential pathway activated by the Shendibushen treatment. The GeneNetwork analysis was used to validate the correlation and identify the connections between CD146 and the key genes of the potential pathways. Results • Shendibushen capsules decreased the degree of renal interstitial fibrosis in the UUO rat model and reduced the serum creatinine, blood urea nitrogen, microalbumin, serum sCD146, and urinary sCD146 significantly compared to the model group (P<.05). Upon analysis of the metabolic pathways activated by Shendibushen, the study further verified, through use of the KEGG database, that CD146 activated the nuclear factor kappa B1 (NF-κB1) and transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-β1)/ SMAD family member 2 (SMAD2) pathways. Conclusions • CD146 could become an early indicator in clinical monitoring. CD146 has a function related to the NF-κB1and TGF-β1/ SMAD2 pathways under Shendibushen treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nano-TiO2 showed a good catalytic activity, but it is easy to agglomerate, resulting in the reduction or even complete loss of photocatalytic activity. The dispersion of TiO2 particles on porous materials was a potential solution to this problem. Diatomite has high specific surface and absorbability because of its particular shell structure. Thus, TiO2/diatomite composite, prepared by loading TiO2 on the surface of diatomite, was a good photocatalyst, through absorbing organic compounds with diatomite and degrading them with TiO2. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrum (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), chemical analysis, and Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR) indicated that TiO2 was impregnated well on the surface of diatomite. Furthermore, TiO2/diatomite was more active than nano-TiO2 for the degradation of methylene blue (MB) in solution. MB at concentrations of 15 and 35 ppm can be completely degraded in 20 and 40 min, respectively.
