Abstract Asphalt pavement is vulnerable to the temperature rising and extremely high-temperature weather caused by climate change. The regulation techniques of asphalt pavement high temperature have become a growing concern to adapt to climate change. This paper reviewed the state of the art on regulating asphalt pavement high temperature. Firstly, the influencing factors and potential regulation paths of asphalt pavement temperature were summarized. The regulation techniques were categorized into two categories. One is to regulate the heat transfer process, including enhancing reflection, increasing thermal resistance, and evaporation cooling. The other is to regulate through heat collection and transfer or conversion, including embedded heat exchange system, phase change asphalt pavement, and thermoelectric system. Then, the regulation techniques in the literature were reviewed one by one in terms of cooling effects and pavement performance. The issues that still need to be improved were also discussed. Finally, the regulation techniques were compared from the perspectives of theoretical cooling effects, construction convenience, and required maintenance. It can provide reference for understanding the development status of asphalt pavement high temperature regulation techniques and technique selection in practice.

Microwave heating technology is a promising method for asphalt pavement maintenance and de-icing; however, it requires the material to have a good microwave-absorbing ability and can also result in asphalt aging. It is therefore important to develop microwave-sensitive materials used for asphalt pavement maintenance and study the effects of microwave heating on asphalt aging. This study evaluates the electromagnetic characteristics of limestone powder and magnetite powder and explores the influence of microwave heating on the high-temperature rheological and fatigue properties of microwave sensitivity enhanced asphalt mastic with magnetite powder. A vector network analyzer was used to measure the electromagnetic characteristics of limestone powder and magnetite powder. The magnetite filler asphalt mastics were prepared and subjected to microwave heating for 1 h, 2 h, 3 h, and 4 h. Temperature sweep tests, frequency sweep tests, and linear amplitude sweep (LAS) tests were conducted for magnetite filler asphalt mastics before and after microwave heating. LAS experimental results were analyzed based on viscoelastic continuum damage (VECD) theory. The results show that magnetite powders have better electric field energy storage ability, higher dielectric loss and magnetic loss, and better microwave heating efficiency. The complex shear modulus (G*) and rutting factor (G* × (sin δ)−1) rapidly decrease with the increase in temperature, indicating that the mastics’ ability to resist deformation decreases sharply. The longer the microwave heating time for magnetite filler asphalt mastics, the faster the high-temperature rheological properties decreased as the temperature rose. The fatigue life of magnetite filler asphalt mastics significantly decreases with the increase in strain and microwave heating time. It is suggested to add anti-aging agents into asphalt materials to reduce the aging effect in the process of microwave heating. This study provides a reference for the application of microwave heating technology in asphalt pavement maintenance.

In the past decades, a large amount of research was conducted to investigate the application prospect of microwave heating technology in improving the efficiency of asphalt pavement self-healing and de-icing. This paper reviewed the achievements in this area. Firstly, the properties of asphalt concrete after microwave heating were summarized, including microwave sensitivity and heating uniformity. Then, the evaluation indicators and influence factors of the self-healing properties of the asphalt mixtures heated by microwave were reviewed. Finally, the application of microwave heating in asphalt pavement de-icing was explored. In addition, asphalt pavement aging due to microwave heating was also reviewed. It was found that microwave heating technology has good prospects in promoting asphalt pavement self-healing and de-icing. There are also some problems that should be studied in depth, such as the cost-effectiveness of microwave-sensitive additives (MSAs), the performance of the pavement with MSAs, mechanism-based self-healing performance indicators, and the aging of asphalt pavements under cycling microwave heating.

Polyphenol, characterized by various phenolic rings in the chemical structure and an abundance in nature, can be extracted from vegetables, grains, chocolates, fruits, tea, legumes, and seeds, among other sources. Tannic acid (TA), a classical polyphenol with a specific chemical structure, has been widely used in biomedicine because of its outstanding biocompatibility and antibacterial and antioxidant properties. TA has tunable interactions with various materials that are widely distributed in the body, such as proteins, polysaccharides, and glycoproteins, through multimodes including hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic interactions, and charge interactions, assisting TA as important building blocks in the supramolecular self-assembled materials. This review summarizes the recent immense progress in supramolecular self-assembled materials using TA as building blocks to generate different materials such as hydrogels, nanoparticles/microparticles, hollow capsules, and coating films, with enormous potential medical applications including drug delivery, tumor diagnosis and treatment, bone tissue engineering, biofunctional membrane material, and the treatment of certain diseases. Furthermore, we discuss the challenges and developmental prospects of supramolecular self-assembly nanomaterials based on TA.

The poly(acrylic acid-acrylamide/starch) composite was synthesized by solution polymerization, aiming to adsorb mercury (II) in water. The resulted copolymer was characterized by particle size exclusion chromatography (SEC), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetry (TG), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and dynamic light scattering particle size analyzer (DLS). It turned out that starch was successfully incorporated with the macromolecular polymer matrix and played a key role for improving the performance of the composites. These characterization results showed that the graft copolymer exhibited narrow molecular weight distribution, rough but uniform morphology, good thermal stability and narrow particle size distribution. The graft copolymer was used to remove Hg(II) ions from aqueous solution. The effects of contact time, pH value, initial mercury (II) concentration and temperature on the adsorption capacity of Hg(II) ions were researched. It was found that after 120 min of interaction, poly(acrylic acid-acrylamide/starch) composite achieved the maximum adsorption capacity of 19.23 mg·g−1 to Hg(II) ions with initial concentration of 15 mg·L−1, pH of 5.5 at 45 °C. Compared with other studies with the same purpose, the composites synthesized in this study present high adsorption properties for Hg(II) ion in dilute solution. The adsorption kinetics of Hg(II) on the poly(acrylic acid-acrylamide/starch) composite fits well with the pseudo second order model.

Thin film transistors (TFTs) with amorphous InMgO (a-IMO) and InGaZnO (a-IGZO) stacked active layers are proposed to implement high-performance ultraviolet (UV) detectors. In this structure, the IGZO layer serves as the conductive layer and the IMO layer acts as the light absorption layer. The fabricated a-IGZO/a-IMO TFT shows comparable electrical characteristics to those of the conventional a-IGZO TFT as well as high UV photocurrent gain with good visible-blindness. In addition, the a-IGZO/aIMO TFT-based sensor operates with stable and successive light detection. Thus, the a-IGZO/a-IMO TFT has been demonstrated to be able to act as both sensing and switching devices in the pixels of UV image sensors.

Activated carbon-supported HgCl2 catalyst has been used widely in acetylene hydrochlorination in the chlor-alkali chemical industry. However, HgCl2 is an extremely toxic pollutant. It is not only harmful to human health but also pollutes the environment. Therefore, the design and synthesis of mercury-free and environmentally benign catalysts with high activity has become an urgent need for vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) production. This review summarizes research progress on the design and development of mercury-free catalysts for acetylene hydrochlorination. Three types of catalysts for acetylene hydrochlorination in the chlor-alkali chemical industry are discussed. These catalysts are a noble metal catalyst, non-noble metal catalyst, and non-metallic catalyst. This review serves as a guide in terms of the catalyst design, properties, and catalytic mechanism of mercury-free catalyst for the acetylene hydrochlorination of VCM. The key problems and issues are discussed, and future trends are envisioned.

Excess sulfur has become a global problem in petrochemical industry. Inexpensive and easily available cottonseed oil (CSO) is still underutilized. To resolve these issues, bio-based polysulfide composites were prepared via inverse vulcanization of sulfur and CSO. The density of polysulfide composites was adjusted by fillers. The results showed that Elm and cattail as the fillers had no effects on the thermal properties and chemical structures of polysulfide composites. However, the morphologies of polysulfide composites were significantly influenced by the fillers. Different types and amounts of fillers produced significantly different holes and folds in the composites. The fillers were embedded in polysulfide composites by physical filling. This study provides an alternative and promising approach for preparing affordable density-adjustable bio-based polysulfide composite.

Biomass-based functional rubber adsorbents were designed and prepared via inverse vulcanization and post-modification. The plant rubber was synthesized with sulfur and renewable cottonseed oil as well as various micromolecular modifiers with nitrogen-containing functional groups. Results showed that types of nitrogen-containing functional groups and dosages of modifiers had a significant impact on the adsorption capacities of the resulting polymers for Hg2+. Notably, when the mass ratio of 2-aminoethyl methacrylate (AEMA) to sulfur was 0.05, the resulting polymer polysulfide-co-cottonseed oil modified by AEMA (SCOA2) showed the highest adsorption capacity (343.3 mg g−1) among all the prepared samples. Furthermore, the Hg2+ removal efficiency of SCOA2 remained over 80% of its original value after five adsorption-desorption cycles. It demonstrated a promising case for utilizing cheap industrial by-products (sulfur) and renewable materials (cottonseed oil). The prepared functional rubber provides alternative approach for mercury removal in waste utilization and sustainable chemistry.

Here, 22-carbon tricarboxylic acid (C22TA) and its ester (C22TAE) were prepared via the Diels−Alder reaction of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and their esters (PUFAEs) as dienes with fumaric acid (FA) and dimethyl fumarate (DF) as dienophiles, respectively. The role of an iodine catalyst for the synthesis of C22TA and C22TAE in the Diels−Alder type reaction was investigated using a spectroscopic approach. The chemical structures of the products were characterized using proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) analysis. Results showed that nonconjugated dienes can react with dienophiles through a Diels−Alder reaction with an iodine catalyst, and that iodine transformed the nonconjugated double bonds of dienes into conjugated double bonds via a radical process. DF was more favorable for the Diels−Alder reaction than FA. This was mainly because the dienophile DF contained an electron-withdrawing substituent, which reduced the highest and lowest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO−LUMO) energy gap and accelerated the Diels−Alder reaction. By transforming nonconjugated double bonds into conjugated double bonds, iodine as a Lewis acid increased the electron-withdrawing effect of the carbonyl group on the carbon−carbon double bond and reduced the energy difference between the HOMO of diene and the LUMO of dienophile, thus facilitating the Diels−Alder reaction.

The stability of gossypol was investigated by the spectroscopic method. Gossypol was dissolved in three different solvents (CHCl3, DMSO, and CH3OH) under different storage conditions (dark and with nitrogen protection, natural light and with nitrogen protection, ambient air conditions) for different time intervals (0 days, 3 days, 5 days, 7 days, 15 days, 30 days, and 45 days) at room temperature. Then, the stability of gossypol was investigated by 1H NMR, UV-vis, and HPLC-QTOF-MS spectrometry. Results showed that gossypol existed in aldehyde–aldehyde form in chloroform within five days. Then, both aldehyde–aldehyde and lactol–lactol tautomeric forms existed and maintained a stable solution for 45 days. Gossypol dissolved in methanol mainly existed in aldehyde–aldehyde form. Only a tiny amount of lactol–lactol was found in freshly prepared methanol solution. Gossypol was found to only exist in lactol–lactol form between 30–45 days. Gossypol existed in aldehyde–aldehyde, lactol–lactol, and ketol–ketol forms in dimethyl sulfoxide, and there was a competitive relationship between aldehyde–aldehyde and lactol–lactol form during the 45 days. Among all the solvents and conditions studied, gossypol was found to be highly stable in chloroform. Under the tested conditions, the natural light and atmospheric oxygen had little effect on its stability. Although the spectroscopy data seemed to be changed over time in the three different solvents, it was actually due to the tautomeric transformation rather than molecular decomposition.

Three gossypol molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) were prepared by bulk polymerization (MIP1), surface layer imprinting using silica gel as the support (MIP2), and the sol-gel process (MIP3). The as-prepared MIPs were characterized by SEM and nitrogen adsorption−desorption techniques to study the morphology structure. The adsorption experiments exhibited that MIP1 had adsorption capacity as high as 564 mg·g−1. The MIP2 showed faster adsorption kinetics than MIP1 and MIP3. The adsorption equilibrium could be reached for gossypol in 40 min. A selectivity study showed that the adsorption capacity of MIPs for gossypol was about 1.9 times higher than that of the structurally-similar analogs ellagic acid and 6.6 times higher than that of the quercetin. It was found that the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Freundlich isotherm model were more applicable for the adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherm of gossypol binding onto the MIP1 and MIP2, respectively. Results suggested that among those three, the MIP2 was a desirable sorbent for rapid adsorption and MIP1 was suitable for selective recognition of gossypol.

Solution polymerization synthesized alt-resistant superabsorbent poly (acrylic acid-acrylamide/fly ash) composites. The mass ratio of acrylic acid (AA) to acrylamide (AM), the concentration of crosslinker, the neutralization degree (ND) of AA, and the polymerization temperature were investigated by single-factor method. Optimized conditions for the synthesis of poly (acrylic acid-acrylamide/fly ash) (PAA-AM/FA) are, as following: m (AA)/m (AM) is 1.5, the content of crosslinker N, N-methylenebisacrylamide. (MBA) is 0.7%, neutralization degree of AA is 70%, polymerization temperature is 70 °C, and fly ash (FA) content is 50%. The prepared PAA-AM/FA demonstrated superior water absorption performance. The absorption capacities of PAA-AM/FA for pure water and 0.9% NaCl solution were found to be 976 g·g−1 and 81 g·g−1, respectively. Furthermore, PAA-AM/FA was found to have excellent adsorption capacity (148 mg·g−1) for Rhodamine B in water. Fourier Transform-Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) characterized the prepared materials. Results showed that fly ash was incorporated into the macromolecular polymer matrix and played a key role in improving the performance of the polymer composites.

The influence of various silica gel supports with different shapes and sizes on the recognition properties of surface molecular imprinted polymers (MIPs) was investigated. MIPs for selective recognition and adsorption of gossypol were synthesized via the sol–gel process with a surface imprinting technique on silica gel substrates. 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) and tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) were chosen as the functional monomer and the cross-linker. The morphology and structure of the gossypol-MIPs were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and a standard Brunauer–Emett–Teller (BET) analysis. Results indicated that the surface imprinted polymer layer facilitated the removal and rebinding of the template, and thus, achieved fast binding kinetics. Compared with the MIPs prepared on irregularly shaped silica with a broad particle size distribution, the MIPs using regularly-shaped silica of uniform size showed higher imprinting factor (IF), and the MIP made with a relatively larger sized (60 μm) spherical silica, demonstrated higher adsorption capacity compared to the MIPs made with smaller sized, spherical silica. The MIP prepared with 60 μm spherically shaped silica, featured a fast adsorption kinetic of 10 min, and a saturated adsorption capacity of 204 mg·g−1. The gossypol-MIP had higher selectivity (IF = 2.20) for gossypol over its structurally-similar analogs ellagic acid (IF = 1.13) and quercetin (IF = 1.20). The adsorption data of the MIP correlated well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Freundlich isotherm model, which implied that chemical adsorption dominated, and that multilayer adsorption occurred. Furthermore, the MIP exhibited an excellent regeneration performance, and the adsorption capacity of the MIP for gossypol only decreased by 6% after six reused cycles, indicating good application potential for selective adsorption of gossypol.

In this article we prove the following theorems about weak approximation of smooth cubic hypersurfaces and del Pezzo surfaces of degree 4 defined over global fields. (1) For cubic hypersurfaces of dimension at least two defined over global function fields, if there is a rational point, then weak approximation holds at places of good reduction whose residue field has at least eleven elements. (2) For del Pezzo surfaces of degree 4 defined over global function fields, if there is a rational point, then weak approximation holds at places of good reduction whose residue field has at least thirteen elements. (3) Weak approximation holds for cubic hypersurfaces of dimension at least ten defined over a global function field of characteristic not equal to 2, 3, 5 or a purely imaginary number field. ABSTRACT A two-step process for preparing glass fibers (GFs) reinforced β-nucleated PP composites was designed and developed. The complementary approach combined GFs reinforcement and β-nucleating agents regulation using N, N′-dicyclohexyl-2,6-napthalene-dicarboxamide (TMB-5) in the presence of maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (PP- g-MA) through extrusion blending. The influence of TMB-5 and GFs on the mechanical properties and crystallization behavior of PP was studied by mechanical test, wide-angle X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, and scanning electron microscopy. A distinct complementary effect of GFs and β-nucleating agent TMB-5 on mechanical properties and crystallization behavior of PP was observed. Results showed that addition of 20 wt % GFs and 0.1 wt % TMB-5 into PP matrix with the two-step process could lead to significant increase to its mechanical properties: specifically 64.8% improvement in tensile strength, 107.1% enhancement in flexural modulus, and 167.7% increasement in notched impact strength compared to that of neat PP. Furthermore, with the combination of TMB-5 and GFs, not only led to promoted interfacial adhesion, but also significantly improved overall comprehensive mechanical properties. The removal of hydrogen sulphide by using the activated carbon method is introduced in this paper. The desulphurization efficiency of desulphurizer is researched for different kinds of activated carbon under laboratory conditions. It focuses on the research of the removal efficiency of hydrogen sulphide by granular activated carbon, renewable granular activated carbon, granular activated carbon containing manganese dioxide and powdered activated carbon. The best type of activated carbon removing hydrogen sulphide has been obtained on this basis. The results of the studies show that the processing efficiency of granular activated carbon is far better than that of regeneration. The more the number of regeneration, the worse the desulphurization efficiency. The best activated carbon of desulphurization efficiency is the powdered activated carbon in the experiment. After the addition of manganese dioxide in granular activated carbon, the desulphurization efficiency could not be improved. It is clear that manganese dioxide does not play any role. Nb doped TiO2 (TiO2:Nb) thin films are prepared by direct current magnetron sputtering on glass substrates followed by different O2 pressure postanneal at 300 °C. The proper postannealing O2 pressure (PO2-anneal) prompts the crystallization of the as-deposited amorphous TiO2:Nb films and improves the electron mobility. High vacuum postanneal leads to weak crystalline TiO2:Nb films, while the TiO2:Nb films remain amorphous at high PO2-anneal. The average transmittance in the visible region increases monotonically with PO2-anneal due to the reduction of oxygen vacancy and reaches 81% when PO2-anneal is 20 Pa. However, an oxygen interstitial can be formed in O2 rich annealing atmosphere, which would result in the suppression of carrier concentration. The carrier concentration maximum (~1.55×1021 cm-3) of the TiO2:Nb films is obtained when the PO2-anneal is 0.5 Pa. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Thin films of SnO2 are prepared by anodic oxidation of Sn on glass substrates. The surface topography of the anodic films is consistent with the original Sn films, indicating that the oxidation process primarily takes place perpendicularly along the Sn particles. As-prepared anodic SnO2 thin films possess an amorphous SnO2 phase at the surface, followed by an unoxidized thin layer of Sn between the SnO2 film and the substrate. With increasing annealing temperature, the residual Sn layer decreases until it disappears at 400 °C, and the amorphous SnO2 becomes nanocrystalline. The mobility of the as-prepared anodic SnO2 films is less than 0.1 cm2/(V s), but the annealed films have a mobility range of 1.6-2.2 cm2/(V s). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
