Any dielectric material under a strain gradient presents flexoelectricity. Here, we synthesized 0.75 sodium bismuth titanate −0.25 strontium titanate (NBT-25ST) core–shell nanoparticles via a solid-state chemical reaction directly inside a transmission electron microscope (TEM) and observed domain-like nanoregions (DLNRs) up to an extreme temperature of 800 °C. We attribute this abnormal phenomenon to a chemically induced lattice strain gradient present in the core–shell nanoparticle. The strain gradient was generated by controlling the diffusion of strontium cations. By combining electrical biasing and temperature-dependent in situ TEM with phase field simulations, we analyzed the resulting strain gradient and local polarization distribution within a single nanoparticle. The analysis confirms that a local symmetry breaking, occurring due to a strain gradient (i.e. flexoelectricity), accounts for switchable polarization beyond the conventional temperature range of existing polar materials. We demonstrate that polar nanomaterials can be obtained through flexoelectricity at extreme temperature by tuning the cation diffusion., The limited number of materials with a switchable electrical polarization available for applications can be increased by exploiting the flexoelectric effect. Here, switchable polarization in nanoparticles induced by an elemental distribution dependent strain gradient up to 800 °C is demonstrated.

A higher saturation magnetization obtained by an increased iron content is essential for yielding larger energy products in rare-earth Sm2Co17-type pinning-controlled permanent magnets. These are of importance for high-temperature industrial applications due to their intrinsic corrosion resistance and temperature stability. Here we present model magnets with an increased iron content based on a unique nanostructure and -chemical modification route using Fe, Cu, and Zr as dopants. The iron content controls the formation of a diamond-shaped cellular structure that dominates the density and strength of the domain wall pinning sites and thus the coercivity. Using ultra-high-resolution experimental and theoretical methods, we revealed the atomic structure of the single phases present and established a direct correlation to the macroscopic magnetic properties. With further development, this knowledge can be applied to produce samarium cobalt permanent magnets with improved magnetic performance., Understanding the factors that determine the properties of permanent magnets, which play a central role in many industrial applications, can help in improving their performance. Here, the authors study how changes in the iron content affect the microstructure of samarium cobalt magnets.

International audience; (K,Na)NbO 3 -based ferroelectric single crystals have recently undergone a substantial development, resulting in improved crystal quality and large piezoelectric coefficients, exceeding 700 pC/N, over a broad temperature range. However, further development necessitates a detailed understanding of the mechanisms defining the domain structure and its temperature evolution. This paper presents the investigation into the crystallographic structure and domain configurations of a (K,Na,Li)(Ta,Nb)O 3 single crystal over a broad temperature range. The crystal was grown by the submerged-seed solution growth technique and investigated using in situ transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, dielectric measurements, and polarized light microscopy. The lattice distortion, structural phase transitions, and domain configurations are reported. A transition from the lamellar orthorhombic to the rectangular tetragonal domain structure is observed upon heating. Moreover, the milky optical appearance of the crystal was investigated and found to result from the presence of regions with different domain configurations and domain sizes. The formation of these regions is related to the growth defects, which govern the domain formation when cooling below the Curie temperature.

Typical synthesis of α″-Fe16N2 nanoparticles involves reduction of iron oxides by hydrogen at elevated temperatures which is disadvantageous due to the particle coalescence. Here we report on a process for reduction of iron oxides at elevated pressures and show that by increasing hydrogen pressure from atmospheric to 53 MPa, it is possible to reduce the reaction temperature from 663 K down to 483 K, resulting in phase-pure α-Fe nanoparticles without noticeable particle growth. By subsequent nitrogenation in an ammonia flow, fine, 99% phase-pure α″-Fe16N2 nanoparticles could be synthesized. The reduction temperature and the respective particle size has a significant influence on the nitrogenation step. α″-Fe16N2 nanoparticles exhibit semi-hard magnetic properties with Ms(0) = 215 Am2 kg−1, μ0Hc = 0.22 T, TC = 634 K and exchange stiffness Ac = 6.84 pJ m−1, Aa,b = 7.53 pJ m−1. Synthesis conditions, microstructure, chemical composition and thermal stability of the nanoparticles are systematically studied and correlated with the observed magnetic properties.

Controlling the porosity, the shape, and the morphology of Kirkendall hollow nanostructures is the key factor to tune the properties of these tailor-made nanomaterials which allow in turn broadening their applications. It is shown that by applying a continuous oxidation to copper nanowires following a temperature ramp protocol, one can synthesize cuprous oxide nanotubes containing periodic copper nanoparticles. A further oxidation of such nanoobjects allows obtaining cupric oxide nanotubes with a bamboo-like structure. On the other hand, by applying a sequential oxidation and reduction reactions to copper nanowires, one can synthesize hollow nanoobjects with complex shapes and morphologies that cannot be obtained using the Kirkendall effect alone, such as necklace-like cuprous oxide nanotubes, periodic solid copper nanoparticles or hollow cuprous oxide nanospheres interconnected with single crystal cuprous oxide nanorods, and aligned and periodic hollow nanospheres embedded in a cuprous oxide nanotube. The strategy demonstrated in this study opens new avenues for the engineering of hollow nanostructures with potential applications in gas sensing, catalysis, and energy storage.

Nanoporous materials are of great interest for various technological applications including sensors based on surface-enhanced Raman scattering, catalysis, and biotechnology. Currently, tremendous efforts are dedicated to the development of porous one-dimensional materials to improve the properties of such class of materials. The main drawback of the synthesis approaches reported so far includes (i) the short length of the porous nanowires, which cannot reach the macroscopic scale, and (ii) the poor organization of the nanostructures obtained by the end of the synthesis process. In this work, we report for the first time on a two-step approach allowing creating highly ordered porous gold nanowire arrays with a length up to a few centimeters. This two-step approach consists of the growth of gold/copper alloy nanowires by magnetron cosputtering on a nanograted silicon substrate, serving as a physical template, followed by a selective dissolution of copper by an electrochemical anodic process in diluted sulfuric acid. We demonstrate that the pore size of the nanowires can be tailored between 6 and 21 nm by tuning the dealloying voltage between 0.2 and 0.4 V and the dealloying time within the range of 150-600 s. We further show that the initial gold content (11 to 26 atom %) and the diameter of the gold/copper alloy nanowires (135 to 250 nm) are two important parameters that must carefully be selected to precisely control the porosity of the material.

In this work, we report on the Kirkendall-induced hollowing process occurring upon thermal oxidation of gold–copper (Au–Cu) alloy nanowires and nanodots. Contrary to elemental metals, the oxidation reaction results in the formation of gold nanostructures trapped inside hollow copper oxide nanoshells. We particularly focus on the thermally activated reshaping mechanism of the gold phase forming the core. Using scanning transmission electron microscopy coupled to energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy mapping, we show that such a reshaping is a consequence to the reorganization of gold at the atomic level. The gold nanostructures forming the core were found to be strongly dependent on the chemical composition of the alloy and the oxidation temperature. By selecting the appropriate annealing conditions (i.e., duration, temperature), one can easily synthesize various heteronanostructures: wire-in-tube, yolk–shell, oxide nanotubes embedding or decorated by Au nanospheres. Understanding the dealloying mechanisms of gold-based alloy thin films resulting in the formation of nanoporous gold with a sponge-like structure is essential for the future design and integration of this novel class of material in practical devices. Here we report on the synthesis of nanoporous gold thin films using a free-corrosion approach in nitric acid applied to cosputtered Au-Cu thin films. A relationship is established between the as-grown Au-Cu film characteristics (i.e., composition, morphology, and structure) and the porosity of the sponge-like gold thin films. We further demonstrate that the dealloying approach can be applied to nonhomogenous Au-Cu alloy thin films consisting of periodic and alternate Au-rich/Au-poor nanolayers. In such a case, however, the dealloying process is found to be altered and unusual etching stages arise. Thanks to defects and column boundaries playing the role of channels, the nitric acid is found to quickly penetrate within the films and then laterally (i.e., parallel to the film surface) attacks the nanolayers rather than perpendicularly. As a consequence to this anisotropic etching, the Au-poor layers are etched preferentially and transform into Au pillars holding the Au-rich layers and preventing them against collapsing. A further exposure to nitric acid results in the collapsing of the Au-rich layers accompanied by a transition from a multilayered to a sponge-like structure. A scenario, supported by experimental observations, is further proposed to provide a detailed explanation of the fundamental mechanisms occurring during the dealloying process of films with a multilayered structure.

A novel crystalline boron oxynitride (BON) phase has been synthesized under static pressures exceeding 15 GPa and temperatures above 1900 °C, from molar mixtures of B2O3 and h-BN. The structure and composition of the synthesized product were studied using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, electron diffraction, automated diffraction tomography, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS). BON shows a hexagonal cell (R3m, Z = 3) with lattice parameters a = 2.55(5) A and c = 6.37(13) A, and a crystal structure closely related to the cubic sphalerite type. The EELS quantification yielded 42 at % B, 35 at % N, and 23 at % O (B:N:O ≈ 6:4:3). Electronic structure calculations in the framework of Density Functional Theory have been performed to assess the stabilities and properties of selected models with the composition B6N4O3. Tailoring the properties of oxide-based nanocomposites is of great importance for a wide range of materials relevant for energy technology. YBa2Cu3O7-delta (YBCO) superconducting thin films containing nanosized BaHfO3 (BHO) particles yield a significant improvement of the magnetic flux pinning properties and a reduced anisotropy of the critical current density. These films were prepared by chemical solution deposition (CSD) on (100) SrTiO3 (STO) substrates yielding critical current densities up to 3.6 MA cm(-2) at 77 K and self-field. Transport in-field J(c) measurements demonstrated a high pinning force maximum of around 6 GN/m(3) for a sample annealed at T - 760 degrees C that has a doping of 12 mol% of BHO. This sample was investigated by scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) in combination with electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) yielding strain and spectral maps. Spherical BHO nanoparticles of 15 nm in size were found in the matrix, whereas the particles at the interface were flat. A 2 nm diffusion layer containing Ti was found at the YBCO (BHO)/STO interface. Local lattice deformation mapping at the atomic scale revealed crystal defects induced by the presence of both sorts of BHO nanoparticles, which can act as pinning centers for magnetic flux lines. Two types of local lattice defects were identified and imaged: (i) misfit edge dislocations and (ii) Ba-Cu-Cu-Ba stacking faults (Y-248 intergrowths). The local electronic structure and charge transfer were probed by high energy resolution monochromated electron energy-loss spectroscopy. This technique made it possible to distinguish superconducting from non-superconducting areas in nanocomposite samples with atomic resolution in real space, allowing the identification of local pinning sites on the order of the coherence length of YBCO (similar to 1.5 nm) and the determination of 0.25 nm dislocation cores.

Chemical solution deposition (CSD) is a promising way to realize REBa2Cu3O7−x (REBCO; RE = rare earth (here Y, Gd))-coated conductors with high performance in applied magnetic fields. However, the preparation process contains numerous parameters which need to be tuned to achieve high-quality films. Therefore, we investigated the growth of REBCO thin films containing nanometre-scale BaHfO3 (BHO) particles as pinning centres for magnetic flux lines, with emphasis on the influence of crystallization temperature and substrate on the microstructure and superconductivity. Conductivity, microscopy and x-ray investigations show an enhanced performance of BHO nano-composites in comparison to pristine REBCO. Further, those measurements reveal the superiority of GdBCO to YBCOe.g. by inductive critical current densities, J c, at self-field and 77 K. YBCO is outperformed by more than 1 MA cm−2 with J c values of up to 5.0 MA cm−2 for 265 nm thick layers of GdBCO(BHO) on lanthanum aluminate. Transport in-field J c measurements demonstrate high pinning force maxima of around 4 GN m−3 for YBCO(BHO) and GdBCO(BHO). However, the irreversibility fields are appreciably higher for GdBCO. The critical temperature was not significantly reduced upon BHO addition to both YBCO and GdBCO, indicating a low tendency for Hf diffusion into the REBCO matrix. Angular-dependent J c measurements show a reduction of the anisotropy in the same order of magnitude for both REBCO compounds. Theoretical models suggest that more than one sort of pinning centre is active in all CSD films.

Superconducting YBa2Cu3O7-delta (YBCO) films with artificial BaZrO3 (BZO) nanodots were prepared using a chemical solution deposition method involving hybrid solutions composed of trifluoroacetate-based YBCO precursors and reverse micelle stabilized BZO nanoparticle dispersions. Microemulsion-mediated synthesis was used to obtain nano-sized (similar to 12 nm) and mono-dispersed BZO nanoparticles that preserve their features once introduced into the YBCO solution, as revealed by dynamic light scattering. Phase pure, epitaxial YBCO films with randomly oriented BZO nanodots distributed over their whole microstructure were grown from the hybrid solutions on (100) LaAlO3 substrates. The morphology of the YBCO-BZO nanocomposite films was strongly influenced by the amount of nanoparticles incorporated into the system, with contents ranging from 5 to 40 mol%. Scanning electron microscopy showed a high density of isolated second-phase defects consisting of BZO nanodots in the nanocomposite film with 10 mol% of BZO. Furthermore, a direct observation and quantitative analysis of lattice defects in the form of interfacial edge dislocations directly induced by the BZO nanodots was evidenced by transmission electron microscopy. The superconducting properties (77 K) of the YBCO films improved considerably by the presence of such nanodots, which seem to enhance the morphology of the sample and therefore the intergranular critical properties. The incorporation of preformed second-phase defects (here, BZO) during the growth of the superconducting phase is the main innovation of this novel approach for the all-solution based low-cost fabrication of long-length coated conductors.

International audience; The nanomanipulation of metal nanoparticles inside oxide nanotubes, synthesized by means of the Kirkendall effect, is demonstrated. In this strategy, a focused electron beam, extracted from a transmission electron microscope source, is used to site-selectively heat the oxide material in order to generate and steer a metal ion diffusion flux inside the nanochannels. The metal ion flux generated inside the tube is a consequence of the reduction of the oxide phase occurring upon exposure to the e-beam. We further show that the directional migration of the metal ions inside the nanotubes can be achieved by locally tuning the chemistry and the morphology of the channel at the nanoscale. This allows sculpting organized metal nanoparticles inside the nanotubes with various sizes, shapes, and periodicities. This nanomanipulation technique is very promising since it enables creating unique nanostructures that, at present, cannot be produced by an alternative classical synthesis route.

There is a growing interest in the development of smart global systems of wireless, distributed sensors that can be deployed and then operated with no human intervention. However, there are still important technological barriers related to sensor performance and power consumption that limit the implementation of such systems. This paper shows that nanotechnology could help overcome these barriers. An oxygen plasma treatment has been used to functionalise, in a controlled way, the outer walls of multiwalled carbon nanotubes. This treatment respects the integrity of carbon nanotubes but gives rise to carbonyl groups grafted at their sidewalls, which greatly enhance the room-temperature sensitivity and selectivity of the nanomaterial to nitrogen dioxide. The detection mechanism of nitrogen dioxide in the presence of ambient moisture is discussed in light of computational modelling, compositional characterisation and gas sensing tests. The optimised nanomaterial has been used to develop a semi-passive radio frequency identification tag with the capability of sensing nitrogen dioxide in the environment. The tag, which is read by a low-cost commercially available ultra-wideband radar, is normally in sleep mode and includes a wake-up circuit, so power consumption is minimised. This wireless sensor is able to reproducibly detect nitrogen dioxide concentrations from 10 ppm to 100 ppm, with a mean relative error of 0.29%.

Hafnium oxide- and GeSbTe-based functional layers are promising candidates in material systems for emerging memory technologies. They are also discussed as contenders for radiation-harsh environment applications. Testing the resilience against ion radiation is of high importance to identify materials that are feasible for future applications of emerging memory technologies like oxide-based, ferroelectric, and phase-change random-access memory. Induced changes of the crystalline and microscopic structure have to be considered as they are directly related to the memory states and failure mechanisms of the emerging memory technologies.
