Search

Fascination with glassy states has persisted since Fisher introduced the vortex-glass as a new thermodynamic phase that is a true superconductor that lacks conventional long-range order. Though Fisher’s original model considered point disorder, it was later predicted that columnar defects (CDs) could also induce glassiness — specifically, a Bose-glass phase. In YBa2Cu3O7−x (YBCO), glassy states can cause distinct behavior in the temperature (T ) dependent rate of thermally activated vortex motion (S). The vortex-glass state produces a plateau in S(T ) whereas a Bose-glass can transition into a state hosting vortex excitations called double-kinks that can expand, creating a large peak in S(T ). Although glass phases have been well-studied in YBCO, few studies exist of other materials containing CDs that could contribute to distinguishing universal behavior. Here, we report on the effectiveness of CDs tilted ~30° from the c-axis in reducing S in a NbSe2 crystal. The magnetization is 5 times higher and S is minimized when the field is parallel to the defects versus aligned with the c-axis. We see signatures of glassiness in both field orientations, but do not observe a peak in S(T ) nor a plateau at values observed in YBCO. Finally, we discuss the possibility that competing disorder induces a field-orientation-driven transition from a Bose-glass to an anisotropic glass involving both point and columnar disorder.

We report a detailed study of the magnetization modulus as a function of temperature and applied magnetic field under varying angle in Sr$_{4}$Ru$_{3}$O$_{10}$ close to the metamagnetic transition at $H_{c}\backsimeq 2.5\,$T for $H \perp c$. We confirm that the double-feature at $H_{c}$ is robust without further splitting for temperatures below 1.8 K down to 0.48 K. The metamagnetism in Sr$_{4}$Ru$_{3}$O$_{10}$ is accompanied by a reduction of the magnetic moment in the plane of rotation and large field-hysteretic behavior. The double anomaly shifts to higher fields by rotating the field from $H\,\perp \,c$ to $H\,\parallel\,c$. We compare our experimental findings with numerical simulations based on spin reorientation models caused by intrinsic magnetocrystalline anisotropy and Zeeman effect. Crystal anisotropy is able to explain a metamagnetic transition in the ferromagnetic ordered system Sr$_{4}$Ru$_{3}$O$_{10}$, but a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya term is crucial to account for a reduction of the magnetic moment as discovered in the experiments., Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures

We present an extensive study of vortex dynamics in a high-quality single crystal of HgBa2CuO4+δ, a highly anisotropic superconductor that is a model system for studying the effects of anisotropy. From magnetization M measurements over a wide range of temperatures T and fields H, we construct a detailed vortex phase diagram. We find that the temperature-dependent vortex penetration field Hp(T), second magnetization peak Hsmp(T), and irreversibility field Hirr(T) all decay exponentially at low temperatures and exhibit an abrupt change in behavior at high temperatures T/Tc >~ 0.5. By measuring the rates of thermally activated vortex motion (creep) S(T, H) = |dlnM(T, H)/dlnt|, we reveal glassy behavior involving collective creep of bundles of 2D pancake vortices as well as temperature- and time-tuned crossovers from elastic (collective) dynamics to plastic flow. Based on the creep results, we show that the second magnetization peak coincides with the elastic-to-plastic crossover at low T, yet the mechanism changes at higher temperatures.

In search of novel, improved materials for magnetic data storage and spintronic devices, compounds that allow a tailoring of magnetic domain shapes and sizes are essential. Good candidates are materials with intrinsic anisotropies or competing interactions, as they are prone to host various domain phases that can be easily and precisely selected by external tuning parameters such as temperature and magnetic field. Here, we utilize vector magnetic fields to visualize directly the magnetic anisotropy in the uniaxial ferromagnet CeRu2Ga2B. We demonstrate a feasible control both globally and locally of domain shapes and sizes by the external field as well as a smooth transition from single stripe to bubble domains, which opens the door to future applications based on magnetic domain tailoring.

Bulk niobium Superconducting Radio-Frequency cavities are a leading accelerator technology. Their performance is limited by the cavity loss and maximum acceleration gradient, which are negatively affected by vortex penetration into the superconductor when the peak magnetic field at the cavity wall surface exceeds the vortex penetration field (Hvp). It has been proposed that coating the inner wall of an SRF cavity with superconducting thin films increases Hvp. In this work, we utilized Nb ellipsoid to simulate an inverse SRF cavity and investigate the effect of coating it with magnesium diboride layer on the vortex penetration field. A significant enhancement of Hvp was observed. At 2.8 K, Hvp increased from 2100 Oe for an uncoated Nb ellipsoid to 2700 Oe for a Nb ellipsoid coated with ~200 nm thick MgB2 thin film. This finding creates a new route towards achieving higher acceleration gradient in SRF cavity accelerator beyond the theoretical limit of bulk Nb.

We show a simple and effective way to improve the vortex irreversibility line up to very high magnetic fields (60T) by increasing the density of second phase BaZrO3 nanoparticles. (Y0.77,Gd0.23)Ba2Cu3Oy films were grown on metal substrates with different concentration of BaZrO3 nanoparticles by the metal organic deposition method. We find that upon increase of the BaZrO3 concentration, the nanoparticle size remains constant but the twin-boundary density increases. Up to the highest nanoparticle concentration (n ~ 1.3 × 1022/m3), the irreversibility field (Hirr) continues to increase with no sign of saturation up to 60 T, although the vortices vastly outnumber pinning centers. We find extremely high Hirr, namely Hirr = 30 T (H||45°) and 24 T (H||c) at 65 K and 58 T (H||45°) and 45 T (H||c) at 50K. The difference in pinning landscape shifts the vortex solid-liquid transition upwards, increasing the vortex region useful for power applications, while keeping the upper critical field, critical temperature and electronic mass anisotropy unchanged.

We measured the thickness dependence of the superconducting properties in epitaxial δ-MoN thin films grown on α-Al2O3(001) substrates by polymer-assisted deposition. Our results indicate that the superconducting properties such as the upper critical field (μ0Hc2 ≈ 10 T) and the superconducting critical temperature (Tc = 12.5 K) are thickness independent for films thicker than ~36 nm. By measuring the critical current density (Jc) in the vortex-free state, which coincides with the depairing current density (J0), we estimate that films thicker than ~36 nm have a coherence length ξ(0) = 5.8 ± 0.2 nm and penetration depth λ(0) = 420 ± 50 nm. We report ferroelectric (FE), ferromagnetic, and magnetoelectric (ME) properties of BiFeO3 films directly deposited on flexible magnetic Ni tapes. Without use of metal-oxide and/or noble metal buffer layer between the BiFeO3 and the Ni, both ferroelectric and magnetic properties of the film and the substrate are preserved. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy analyses confirm the formation of preferentially oriented (110) BiFeO3 film on Ni tapes. The BiFeO3 film has a saturation polarization and a piezoelectric d(33) coefficient of 69 mu C/cm(2) and 52 pm/V, respectively. The BiFeO3/Ni tape shows a magnetoelectric coefficient of 3.5 mV/cm.Oe. We report the temperature-dependent magnetic penetration depth $\ensuremath{\lambda}(T)$ and the superconducting critical field ${H}_{c2}(T)$ in a 500-nm MgB${}_{2}$ film. Our analysis of the experimental results takes into account the two-gap nature of the superconducting state and indicates larger intraband diffusivity in the three-dimensional (3D) $\ensuremath{\pi}$ band compared to that in the two-dimensional (2D) $\ensuremath{\sigma}$ band. Direct comparison of our results with those reported previously for single crystals indicates that larger intraband scattering in the 3D $\ensuremath{\pi}$ band leads to an increase of $\ensuremath{\lambda}$. We calculated $\ensuremath{\lambda}$ and the thermodynamic critical field ${H}_{c}\ensuremath{\approx}2000$ Oe by employing the gap equations for two-band superconductors. Good agreement between the measured and calculated $\ensuremath{\lambda}$ value indicates the two independent measurements, such as magnetic force microscopy and transport, provide a venue for investigating superconducting properties in multiband superconductors.

We have investigated the ferrimagnetic domain structure in a Gd$_{0.67}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_{3}$ thin film using magnetic force microscopy. We observe clear signs of phase separation, with magnetic islands embedded in a non-magnetic matrix. We also directly visualize the reversal of magnetization of ferrimagnetic domains as a function of temperature and attribute it to a change in the balance of magnetization of anti-aligned Mn and Gd sublattices., 4 pages, 3 figures

Many second phase additions to YBa2Cu3O7−x (YBCO) films, in particular those that self-assemble into aligned nanorod and nanoparticle structures, enhance performance in self and applied fields. Of particular interest for additions are Ba-containing perovskites that are compatible with YBCO. In this report, we discuss the addition of Ba2YRuO6 to bulk and thick-film YBCO. Sub-micron, randomly oriented particles of this phase were found to form around grain boundaries and within YBCO grains in bulk sintered pellets. Within the limits of EDS, no Ru substitution into the YBCO was observed. Thick YBCO films were grown by pulsed laser deposition from a target consisting of YBa2Cu3Oy with 5 and 2.5 mole percent additions of Ba2YRuO6 and Y2O3, respectively. Films with enhanced in-field performance contained aligned, self-assembled Ba2YRuO6 nanorods and strained Y2O3 nanoparticle layers. A 0.9 µm thick film was found to have a self-field critical current density (Jc) of 5.1 MA/cm2 with minimum Jc(Q, H=1T) of 0.75 MA/cm2. Conversely, Jc characteristics were similar to YBCO films without additions when these secondary phases formed as large, disordered phases within the film. A 2.3 µm thick film with such a distribution of secondary phases was found to have reduced self-field Jc values of 3.4 MA/cm2 at 75.5 K and Jc(min, Q, 1T) of 0.4 MA/cm2.

For potential applications in superconducting RF cavities, we have investigated the properties of polycrystalline MgB2 films, including the thickness dependence of the lower critical field Hc1. MgB2 thin films were fabricated by hybrid physical-chemical vapor deposition on (0001) SiC substrate either directly (for epitaxial films) or with a MgO buffer layer (for polycrystalline films). When the film thickness decreased from 300 nm to 100 nm, Hc1 at 5 K increased from around 600 Oe to 1880 Oe in epitaxial films and to 1520 Oe in polycrystalline films. The result is promising for using MgB2/MgO multilayers to enhance the vortex penetration field.

We present the fabrication and test results of Hot-Isostatic-Pressed (HIPed) Powder-in-Tube (PIT) MgB$_2$ coils. The coils properties were measured by transport and magnetization at different applied fields ($H$) and temperatures ($T$). The engineering critical current ($J_e$) value is the largest reported in PIT MgB$_2$ wires or tapes. At 25 K our champion 6-layer coil was able to generate a field of 1 T at self-field ($I_c >$ 220 A, $J_e \sim 2.8 \times 10^4$ A/cm$^2$). At 4 K this coil generated 1.6 T under an applied field of 1.25 T ($I_c \sim350$ A, $J_e \sim 4.5 \times 10^4$ A/cm$^2$). These magnetic fields are high enough for a superconducting transformer or magnet applications such as MRI. A SiC doped MgB$_2$ single layer coil shows a promising improvement at high fields and exhibits $J_c > 10^4$ A/cm$^2$ at 7 T., 8 pages 3 figures

The critical current density (Jc) of hot isostatic pressed (HIPed) MgB2 wires, measured by d.c. transport and magnetization, is compared with that of similar wires annealed at ambient pressure. The HIPed wires have a higher Jc than the annealed wires, especially at high temperatures and magnetic fields, and higher irreversibility field (Hirr). The HIPed wires are promising for applications, with Jc>106 A/cm2 at 5 K and zero field and >104 A/cm2 at 1.5 T and 26.5 K, and Hirr ~ 17 T at 4 K. The improvement is attributed to a high density of structural defects, which are the likely source of vortex pinning. These defects, observed by transmission electron microscopy, include small angle twisting, tilting, and bending boundaries, resulting in the formation of sub-grains within MgB2 crystallites., 13 pages,3 figures

MgB2 samples prepared by solid-state reaction were investigated using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HREM), X-ray energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDX), electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS), and energy-filtered imaging. Large amounts of coherent precipitates with a size range from about 5 nm up to about 100 nm were found in the MgB2 crystallite matrices. The precipitates are of different shapes including sphere, ellipsoid, and faceted polyhedron depending on the size of the precipitates. EDX and EELS analyses confirm that smaller precipitates contain magnesium, boron and oxygen while larger faceted precipitates contain mainly magnesium and oxygen, implying that the oxygen content increases with precipitate size. HREM and electron diffraction investigations found that the precipitates have the same crystal lattice structure as that of MgB2 but with various composition modulations depending on the composition of the precipitates. The precipitates transform to the MgO phase after long exposure to residual oxygen in flowing Ar gas at high temperatures. We compare the angular dependence of the pinning of equivalent columnar defects in GdBa2Cu3O7 thin films and a thicker YBa2Cu3O7 single crystal. The tracks' related enhancement of the critical currents is much smaller for the case of the thin films. We interpret this thickness dependence as resulting from a competition between the pinning of the correlated structures, related to total sample thickness, and surface boundary conditions, which force the vortices to depin from the columnar defects near the sample surface. © 2000 Elsevier Science B.V.
