Following recent works on the sonochemical degradation of butyl ethyl piperidinium bis-(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([BEPip][NTf2]), monitoring of sonoluminescence (SL) spectra in the first tens of seconds of sonolysis was needed to better characterize the formed plasma and to question the correlation of the SL spectra with the viscosity. A very dry [BEPip][NTf2] ionic liquid (IL) and a water-saturated liquid are studied in this paper. In both cases, IL degradation is observed as soon as SL emission appears. It is confirmed that the initial evolution of the SL intensity is closely linked to the liquid viscosity that impacts the number of bubbles; however, other parameters can also play a role, such as the presence of water. The water-saturated IL shows more intense SL and faster degradation. In addition to the expected bands, new emission bands are detected and attributed to the S2 B-X emission, which is favored in the water-saturated ionic liquid. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sonoluminescence (SL) spectra of a very dry [BEPip][NTf2] ionic liquid were measured in the first minutes of sonication under Ar. The intense sonoluminescence allowed us to monitor the time-evolution of the SL spectra. Several molecular emissions were observed. Rovibronic temperatures of C2 and CN were determined giving vibrational temperatures of 5800 ± 500 K and 6000 ± 500 K and rotational temperatures (i.e. translational or gas temperatures) of 4000 ± 500 K. These temperatures stay remarkably constant during the sonolysis, while SL spectra undergo strong changes that illustrate the very fast evolution of the plasma during the first minutes of sonication. The expected strong decrease in the plasma electron energy also reflects in the evolution of the populations of CH electronically excited states. The Huisgen thermal reaction between an organic azide and an acetylene was employed for the selective monofunctionalization of a X6-azacryptand ligand bearing a tren coordinating unit [X6 stands for calix[6]arene and tren for tris(2-aminoethyl)amine]. Supramolecular assistance, originating from the formation of a host-guest inclusion complex between the reactants, greatly accelerates the reaction while self-inhibition affords a remarkable selectivity. The new ligand possesses a single amino-leg appended at the large rim of the calixarene core and the corresponding Zn2+ complex was characterized both in solution and in the solid state. The coordination of Zn2+ not only involves the tren cap but also the introverted amino-leg, which locks the metal ion in the cavity. Compared with the parent ligand deprived of the amino-leg, the affinity of the new monofunctionalized X6tren ligand 6 for Zn2+ is found to have a 10-fold increase in DMSO, which is a very competitive solvent, and with an enhancement of at least three orders of magnitude in CDCl3/CD3OD (1:1, v/v). In strong contrast with the fast binding kinetics, decoordination of Zn2+ as well as transmetallation appeared to be very slow processes. The monofunctionalized X6tren ligand 6 fully protects the metal ion from the external medium thanks to the combination of a cavity and a closed coordination sphere, leading to greater thermodynamic and kinetic stabilities. The ipso-nitration of calix[6]arene-based molecular receptors is a important synthetic pathway for the elaboration of more sophisticated systems. This reaction has been studied for a variety of capped calixarenes, and a general trend for the regioselective nitration of three aromatic units out of six in moderate to high yield has been observed. This selectivity is, in part, attributed to the electronic connection between the protonated cap at the small rim and the reactive sites at the large rim. Two molecules containing two phenylphosphaalkene moieties linked by an anthracene (1) or by a naphthalene (2) ring have been synthesized and their crystal structures have been determined. While electrochemical measurements show that these two systems are easily reduced, EPR spectra indicate that, at room temperature, the electronic structures of the two reduction compounds 1−and 2−are quite different. In 1−, in good accordance with DFT predictions, the unpaired electron is delocalized on the full molecule while in 2−it is confined on a single phosphaalkene moiety. This difference is attributed to the short distance between the two phenylphosphaalkene groups in 2−which hinders their reorientation after addition of an electron. The role of this motion is consistent with the fact that two additional paramagnetic species are detected at 145 K: the dianion 22−characterized by a rather small exchange coupling constant and the radical monoanion 2*−resulting from the formation of a one electron P–P bond. The calix[4]arenes 5-diphenylphosphino-17-R1-11,23-diR2-25,26,27,28-tetrapropoxycalix[4]arene (1, R1 = R2 = Br; 2, R1 = Br, R2 = H; 3, R1 = R2 = p-tolyl; 4, R1 = p-tolyl, R2 = H; 5, R1 = R2 = H; 20, R1 = p-tolyl, R2 = H), all bearing a diphenylphosphino group attached to the calixarene upper rim, have been synthesised starting from 5,11,17,23-tetrabromo-25,26,27,28-tetrapropoxycalix[4]arene. Reaction of 1-5 with [RuCl2(p-cymene)]2 leads quantitatively to monophosphine complexes, [RuCl2(p-cymene)L], in which the endo-oriented ruthenium atom unit sits inside the cone delineated by the four phenoxy rings. The particular orientation of the P-Ru vector appears to result from pi-pi interactions between the p-cymene ligand and two aromatic cavity walls. Overall, in each case the calixarene end of the ligand behaves as a supramolecular receptor towards the Ru(p-cymene) fragment. Formation of complexes with exo-oriented P-M bonds were observed in the complexes cis-[PtCl2 x 1(2)] and in [RuCl2(p-cymene) x 20]. As shown by a variable temperature study carried out on [RuCl2(p-cymene) x 3], in which the ruthenium is embedded in an expanded cone, the p-cymene ring undergoes a fast oscillation about the Ru-arene bond which can be frozen out at low temperatures. Reaction of [RuCl2(p-cymene) x 3] with AgBF4 in CH3CN results in an intra-cavity reaction, with one chloride ligand being replaced by acetonitrile.

The binding properties of two large diphosphines, cone-5,17-dibromo-11,23-bis(diphenylphosphino)-25,26,27,28-tetrapropoxycalix[4]arene (1) and cone-5,17-bis(diphenylphosphino)-25,26,27,28-tetrapropoxycalix[4]arene (2) toward Ni(II) centres have been investigated. Whatever the starting complex, NiBr2 or [NiCp]BF4, quantitative formation of a chelate complex was observed, illustrating the preorganisation of the ligands. An X-ray structure determination was carried out for [NiCp1]BF4 which revealed that the nickel atom is positioned to one side of the calixarene axis, the PNiP plane being roughly parallel to the calixarene reference plane. The molecule has C(1) symmetry in the solid state, a feature which is also observed in solution at low temperature. As shown by variable-temperature 1H and 31P NMR studies, the complex undergoes two distinct motions: 1) a fan-like swinging of the coordination plane which displaces the metal from one side of the calixarene axis to the other, a motion during which the PNiP angle is likely to undergo a significant enlargement; 2) a rapid oscillation of each PPh2 unit about the corresponding Ni--P bond. In the latter dynamics the two endo-oriented PPh rings alternately occupy the calixarene entry. The two flexible ligands were assessed in ethylene oligomerisation. Activation with methylaluminoxane of the paramagnetic complexes [NiBr2.(1 or 2)] afforded highly active ethylene dimerisation catalysts, with turnover frequencies up to 10(6) (mol C2H4) (mol Ni)(-1) h(-1). The selective formation of 1-butene can be rationally controlled by using low catalyst concentrations.
