The purpose of this study is to examine the perceptions of elementary school teachers and the conditions within which they teach. This study is expected to contribute to the preparation for the new technology demands of our rapidly changing society and the recent changes made to the 2015 Revised National Curriculum aimed at Fostering Creative-Convergence Human Resources in Korea. It is primarily expected to contribute to the application of the Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) education and Math-Focused STEAM education. For this purpose, we surveyed 273 teachers of 24 public schools in Seoul and Gyunggido area. The results showed that teachers recognized 'convergence' in STEAM education either as an 'integrated approach' in which specific subjects or topics are taught together or as a 'convergent approach' to teach together and further to a new one. In addition, positive responses were shown towards Math-Focused STEAM education in terms of its effectiveness on the education and needs of the students. The most significant problem in terms of the school environment was the lack of preparation time provided, materials, and educational resources. This study is expected to support the increased application of Math-Focused STEAM education in the field, and thus to expand the knowledge embodied in the subject of mathematics.

Acute lung injury (ALI) is induced by pneumonia, sepsis and other conditions. The disease characteristics include severe lung inflammation, in which various cells, such as epithelial cells, macrophages, and neutrophils, play a pivotal role. Corticosteroids and antibiotics are used to treat ALI; however, they may have side effects. Cumulative data confirm that traditional herbal medicines exert therapeutic effects against endotoxin-induced inflammatory responses in both in vitro and in vivo ALI studies. This review briefly describes the anti-ALI effects of medicinal herbal extracts (MHEs) and their molecular mechanisms, especially focusing on Toll-like receptor 4/nuclear factor kappa B cell pathways, with a brief summary of in vitro and in vivo ALI experimental models. Thus, the present review highlights the excellent potential of MHEs for ALI therapy and prevention and may also be useful for the establishment of in vitro and in vivo ALI models. Background: There are higher numbers of Asian individuals with metabolically obese, normal weight (MONW) who are susceptible to diabetes than other ethnic groups. The homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) has been used for years to evaluate IR; however, the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index has been highlighted as a reliable and cost-effective insulin resistance indicator. Thus, this study explored the association of the HOMA-IR versus the TyG index with diabetes in individuals without underweight or obesity. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 10,471 Korean individuals whose body mass index was ≥18.5 and <25.0 kg/m2. Depending on metabolic syndrome criteria, subjects with no conditions, one or two conditions, and three or more conditions were assigned to the metabolically healthy and normal weight (MHNW), pre-MONW, and MONW groups, respectively. Diabetes was diagnosed based on HbA1C and medication information. Results: The HOMA-IR and TyG index discriminated between each group, showing an increasing trend from the MHNW group to the MONW group. However, this trend was more robust for the TyG index. The cut-off values in the TyG index and HOMA-IR were >8.9 and >1.6 in males and >8.7 and >1.6 in females, respectively. The TyG index's area under the curve was higher than that of the HOMA-IR in both sexes. MONWs distinguished by the cut-off values of the TyG index and HOMA-IR were 2.370 and 1.726 for males and 2.249 and 1.710 for females times more likely to develop diabetes. Conclusions: The TyG index showed a stronger association with diabetes in Korean individuals without underweight or obesity than the HOMA-IR. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study investigated the effects of fermented food consumption on the risk of colorectal cancer (CRC) related to processed meat intake using a mouse model. Processed meat products and fermented foods were supplemented to analyze heterocyclic amines (HCA) and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) levels and the gut microbiota in mice. The study determined age to be a non‐influential factor. While HCAs were detected in all the processed meat samples, no CRC development was observed, even when they consumed excessive amounts of these processed meats, either alone or in combination with fermented foods. Bacteroides and Alistipes were the most predominant gut microbiota. Kimchi, soybean paste, and red pepper paste showed a decreasing trend in the ratio of these bacteria associated with gut inflammation, but the results were inconclusive because this trend was inconsistent. Therefore, this study found that fermented foods did not significantly affect CRC risk indicators associated with dietary processed meat intake, regardless of age. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fetal bovine serum (FBS) accounts for the largest portion of the cost of cultured meat production or cell culture experiments and is highly controversial in terms of animal welfare because it is taken from the fetus of a pregnant cow during slaughtering. Nevertheless, FBS is the most important supplement in the cell culture manufacturing process. This study aimed to develop an FBS substitute from slaughterhouse waste blood to reduce the cost of FBS in cultured meat production through various experiments. Our study successfully demonstrated that adult livestock blood obtained from slaughterhouses can effectively replace FBS. Our substitute, when cultured with bovine myosatellite cells, demonstrated cell growth that was either equivalent to or superior to that of commercial FBS. In the process of muscle generation through differentiation, the substitutes from bovine and chicken formed 70%–75% more bovine muscle compared to the control group using FBS. Furthermore, using the FBS substitute can reduce cell culture costs by approximately 61% compared to using commercial FBS. Therefore, the groundbreaking FBS substitute will not only contribute to the development of technology to mass‐produce cultured meat using livestock byproducts but will also lower the production cost of media for experimental cell culture or vaccine production.
