This study investigated sociodemographic factors, health-related factors, and suicidal ideation among older Koreans and compared the risk factors for suicidal ideation in urban and rural areas. A secondary analysis was conducted using data from a nationwide cross-sectional survey of the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2012 to 2013. Subjects aged >65 years (2630) were included, and pooled sampling weights were applied to all data analysis processes. Chi-square tests and multiple logistic regression analyses were performed. The contribution of each factor to suicidal ideation differed significantly between urban and rural areas. Older people living in urban areas cited more contributing factors than those living in rural areas. The factors associated with suicidal ideation among elderly Koreans were primarily health-related in both residential areas. Only two factors, bedridden status and experience of melancholic mood, were common to both areas. The impact of melancholic mood on suicidal ideation was the greatest among all the related factors in both areas, and was larger in urban areas than in rural areas. Subjective unhealthy status, including mental health status, was more influential on suicidal ideation in urban areas. Gender and marital status did not influence suicidal ideation among older people. Factors associated with suicidal ideation must be considered when developing suicide prevention programs tailored to residential areas.

Objective: The aim of this empirical literature review was to conduct a scoping review outlining all research focusing on the association between social capital and depressive symptoms. To be included in the review articles were required to include a definition and measurement of depressive symptoms and social capital dimensions. Methods: Studies from PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, ProQuest, CINAHL, and APA databases were included. Search terms included "social capital" and variations of the term "depression." Two researchers blindly assessed studies using Covidence software. Outcome variables were various social capital measures and depressive symptoms. Results: 2486 studies were identified, which were reduced to 1258 after the duplicates were removed. 1135 studies were found irrelevant and 125 studies were assessed for eligibility through a full‐text review. 39 studies were found to be eligible for this review. Conclusion: The review indicated a strong association between cognitive social capital and depression. However, mixed results between other dimensions of social capital and depression warrant further research. The efficacy of photodynamic therapy (PDT) based on traditional photosensitizers is generally limited by the cellular redox homeostasis system due to the reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging effect of glutathione (GSH). In this study, buthionine sulfoximine (BSO), a GSH inhibitor, was conjugated with the amine group of chitosan oligosaccharide (COS) using a thioketal linker (COSthBSO) to liberate BSO and chlorine e6 (Ce6) under oxidative stress, and then, Ce6-COSthBSO NP (Ce6-COSthBSO NP), fabricated by a dialysis procedure, showed an accelerated release rate of BSO and Ce6 by the addition of hydrogen peroxide, indicating that nanophotosensitizers have ROS sensitivity. In the in vitro cell culture study using HCT116 colon carcinoma cells, a combination of BSO and Ce6 efficiently suppressed the intracellular GSH and increased ROS production compared to the sole treatment of Ce6. In particular, Ce6-COSthBSO NP showed higher efficacy in the suppression of GSH levels and ROS production compared to the free Ce6 and Ce6/BSO combination. These results were due to the fact that Ce6-COSthBSO NP was efficiently delivered to the intracellular region, suppressed intracellular GSH levels, and elevated ROS levels. The in vivo animal tumor xenograft study demonstrated Ce6-COSthBSO NP being efficiently delivered to the tumor tissue, i.e., the fluorescence intensity in the tumor tissue was higher than those of other organs. The combination of Ce6 and BSO efficiently suppressed tumor growth compared to the sole treatment of Ce6, indicating that BSO might efficiently suppress GSH levels and increase ROS levels in the tumor microenvironment. Specifically, Ce6-COSthBSO NP showed the strongest performance in inhibition of tumor growth than those of Ce6 or the CE6/BSO combination, indicating that they were efficiently delivered to tumor tissue, increased ROS levels, and then efficiently inhibited tumor growth. Background: Several studies have investigated factors affecting patient satisfaction after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair (ARCR); however, it is unknown if these factors vary according to age. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the factors associated with satisfaction of ARCR in individuals 70 years and older versus younger patients. Methods: Among 319 consecutive patients who underwent ARCR, 173 were included. Patients were divided into an old age group (≥70 years) and a young age group (<70 years), and the two age groups were further divided into satisfied and unsatisfied subgroups. Patient satisfaction was evaluated at the final follow-up visit using a binary question (yes or no). Clinical outcomes were assessed preoperatively and at the final follow-up. Results: Satisfaction rates in the older and younger age groups were 75.41% and 79.47%, respectively. Mean changes in Constant and American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons scores were significantly different between the satisfied and unsatisfied subgroups (P=0.031 and P=0.012, respectively) in the young patients. In the old patients, there was a significant difference in the mean change in depression subscale of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (P=0.031) and anxiety subscale of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (P=0.044) scores between the satisfied and unsatisfied subgroups. Conclusions: Factors affecting patient satisfaction after ARCR differed according to age. Psychological improvement was more important to elderly patients, whereas restoration of function was more important to younger patients. Pain relief was important for both age groups. Background and Objectives: Chronic hepatitis C (CHC) can be cured with direct-acting antiviral (DAA) therapy. In Korea, sofosbuvir (SOF) and ledipasvir (LDV)/SOF were launched in 2016. Patients who achieve a sustained virologic response (SVR) following DAA treatment are predicted to have a favorable prognosis. Nevertheless, little is known regarding the prognosis of Korean CHC patients who receive SOF-based treatment and achieve SVR. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to look into the long-term outcomes for these patients. Materials and Methods: This was a prospective, multicenter observational study. CHC patients were enrolled who, following SOF or LDV/SOF treatment, had achieved SVR. The last day for follow-up was December 2023. The primary endpoint was HCC occurrence, which was checked at least once per year. Results: A total of 516 patients were included in this analysis, with a median follow-up duration of 39.0 months. Among them, 231 were male patients (44.8%), with a median age of 62.0 years. Genotypes were 1 (90, 17.4%), 2 (423, 82.0%), and 3 (3, 0.6%). The combination of SOF plus ribavirin was the most common treatment (394, 76.4%). In total, 160 patients were cirrhotic (31.0%), and the mean Child–Pugh score was 5.1. Within a maximum of 7 years, 21 patients (4.1%) developed HCC. Patients with HCC were older (69 vs. 61 years, p = 0.013) and had a higher cirrhosis incidence (81.0 vs. 28.9%, p < 0.001), higher AFP (6.0 vs. 3.3, p = 0.003) and higher APRI (0.8 vs. 0.5, p = 0.005). Age over 65 (p = 0.016) and cirrhosis (p = 0.005) were found to be significant risk factors for HCC by Cox regression analysis. Conclusions: Patients who achieved SVR with SOF-based treatment had a relatively favorable prognosis. However, the risk of HCC was not eliminated, especially in older and cirrhotic patients. Allium ulleungense (AU) and A. microdictyon (AM) are valuable medicinal and edible vegetables, referred to as mountain garlic in Korea. The identification of AU, AM and a neighboring species A. ochotense (AO) is difficult because of their morphological similarities. We collected samples from three species and 46 cultivated collections to understand the genetic diversity of these valuable Allium species. Among them, we sequenced six collections, including three species and three cultivating collections to obtain data from the plastid genome (plastome) and nuclear 45S ribosomal DNA (nrDNA) for super-barcoding. The AM and AO showed around 60 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and 39 Insertion/Deletion (InDels) in the plastome but no variations in the nrDNA sequences. Conversely, the AU and AM showed more than 170 SNPs and 80 InDels in the plastomes, and 20 SNPs and 1 InDel were found in the 45S nrDNA sequences. Among the three cultivating collections, one TB collection was determined to be the AU type in both plastome and nrDNA sequences. However, the other two collections, JB and SA, showed the AM type plastome but were heterozygous in the 45S nrDNA sequences, indicating both AU and AM types (putative AM x AU hybrid). Ten molecular markers were developed based on sequence variations to identify these three species and assess their genetic diversity. A total of 49 collections were genotyped using the ten developed markers and classified into five groups: 14 AU, 22 AM, 1 AO, 3 putative AM x AU hybrids, and 9 putative AU x AM hybrid collections. Super-barcoding with plastomes and nrDNAs revealed the genetic diversity of the three Allium species and putative hybrids between species. Simple Summary: Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) and entecavir (ETV) are the preferred anti-viral agents used as first-line treatments for chronic hepatitis B. Despite many meta-analyses being conducted, it is still not clear whether TDF is more effective than ETV at reducing the risk of HCC due to the inconsistent statistical methodologies employed in previous observational studies. To reduce heterogeneity, we analysed only hospital cohort data studies with anti-viral naive patients. Additionally, unlike previous studies, we conducted subgroup analyses with enrolment criteria and socioeconomic factors that could not be corrected with statistical techniques. There is no difference between the two drugs in terms of reducing the risk of HCC in a pooled analysis of PS-matched patients. In the subgroup analysis, if there was interval of over three years from the start point of patient enrolment, we found that TDF was associated with significantly lower HCC risk. This result will provide new perspectives for future research. However, the efficacy of these agents in reducing the incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains unclear. We conducted this meta-analysis to assess the efficacy of anti-viral agent on preventing HCC in CHB. Two investigators independently searched all relevant studies that examined the efficacy of anti-viral agent for preventing HCC using MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases through August 2021. The extracted data were analysed using a random-effects meta-analysis model based on the inverse-variance method (DerSimonian–Laird) and expressed as hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI). We included 19 retrospective studies in the analysis. Although there was substantial heterogeneity between the studies, the overall pooled HR indicated that TDF significantly lowered the risk of HCC (HR: 0.72, 95% CI: 0.58–0.90, I2 = 66.29%). However, the pooled analysis of propensity score (PS)-matched subpopulations showed no significant differences (HR, 0.83; 95% CI, 0.65–1.06; I2 = 52.30%) between TDF and ETV. In a subgroup analysis, an interval of over three years in the start point of patient enrolment and excluding alcoholic liver disease patients significantly lowered the HCC risk associated with TDF. In conclusion, TDF may be more effective than ETV at reducing HCC incidence in treatment-naive CHB patients, but this effect was not consistent in the PS-matched subpopulation that reduced heterogeneity. As a result of subgroup analysis, the conflicting findings of previous studies may result from heterogeneous inclusion criteria.
