Abstract

L’Unité Archéostratigraphique G (UA G), située à la base de l’ensemble stratigraphique CIII du remplissage de la Caune de l’Arago, datée à 438 ± 31 ka et corrélée au stade isotopique 12, a livré de nombreux restes humains attribués à Homo erectus tautavelensis, ainsi qu’une faune et une industrie lithique abondantes. Il est possible d’observer au sommet de l’UA G une bonne représentation des espèces de milieux ouverts et froids (Praeovibos priscus et Rangifer tarandus notamment) tandis qu’à sa base les espèces de milieux fermés et tempérés (en particulier Cervus elaphus et Dama sp.) prédominent. Ces structures de communautés fauniques, dites « non-analogues », sont également observées pour les associations de micromammifères, donnant lieu à une paléocommunauté très diversifiée et représentée par des taxons aux affinités écologiques très variées. Cette hétérogénéité des communautés mammaliennes a vraisemblablement été favorisée par la topographie des environs de la Caune de l’Arago qui permet de passer des zones littorales au massif des Pyrénées en moins de 50 km. Une telle configuration a en effet induit la présence de « zones refuges » contiguës, l’une méridionale en période glaciaire et abritant des espèces thermophiles et l’autre alpine, abritant des espèces continentales et boréales au cours des épisodes plus tempérés (refuge méridional cryptique). Globalement, les communautés micromammaliennes de l’UA G sont caractérisées par une bonne représentation des espèces inféodées aux environnements tempérés et fermés (Iberomys mediterraneus, Apodemus sylvaticus, Eliomys quercinus) à la base de l’unité, qui laissent place à des espèces liées à des environnements froids et ouverts (Spermophilus sp., Microtus gregalis, Dicrostonyx torquatus) au sommet. Une tendance au refroidissement du climat de la base au sommet de l’unité est également enregistrée par les variations des associations de grands mammifères. Ces observations nous permettent une interprétation nouvelle de l’UA G qui correspond à une transition climatique entre une période tempérée et une période froide. The Archaeostratigraphic Unit G (UA G), located at the base of the stratigraphic ensemble CIII of the Caune de l''Arago infilling, dated to 438 +/- 31 ka and correlated to the isotopic stage 12, delivered numerous human remains attributed to Homo erectus tautavelensis, as well as abundant fauna and lithics. At the top of the UA G it is possible to observe a good representation of the species living in open and cold environments (Praeovibos priscus and Rangifer tarandus in particular) whereas the species living in closed and temperate environment (particularly Cervus elaphus and Dama sp.) predominate at its base. These structures of faunal communities, said "non-analogous", are also observed for the associations of micromammals, providing a diversified palaeocommunity and represented by taxa with very distinct ecological affinities. This heterogeneity of the mammalian communities was very likely favored by the topography of the surroundings of the Caune de l''Arago, which makes it possible to go from coastal areas to the Pyrenean Mountains within less than 50 km. Such topography has indeed induced the presence of contiguous "refuge areas", a Southern refuge during the ice age housing thermophilous species and an Alpine refuge housing continental and boreal species during the more temperate episodes (Southern cryptic refuge). Overall at the base of the Unit, the micromammalian communities of UA G are characterized by a good representation of the species linked to temperate and closed environments (Iberomys mediterraneus, Apodemus sylvaticus, Eliomys quercinus). Then at the top, they make way for species linked to cold and open environments (Spermophilus sp., Microtus gregalis, Dicrostonyx torquatus). A tendency to a cooler climate from the base to the top of the Unit is also recorded by the variations of the associations of large mammals. These observations allow us to give a new interpretation of UA G which corresponds to a transition between a temperate period and a cold period.

Abstract

Marine wildlife faces a growing number of threats across the globe, and the survival of many species and populations will be dependent on conservation action. One threat in particular that has emerged over the last 4 decades is the pollution of oceanic and coastal habitats with plastic debris. The increased occurrence of plastics in marine ecosystems mirrors the increased prevalence of plastics in society, and reflects the high durability and persistence of plastics in the environment. In an effort to guide future research and assist mitigation approaches to marine conservation, we have generated a list of 16 priority research questions based on the expert opinions of 26 researchers from around the world, whose research expertise spans several disciplines, and covers each of the world’s oceans and the taxa most at risk from plastic pollution. This paper highlights a growing concern related to threats posed to marine wildlife from microplastics and fragmented debris, the need for data at scales relevant to management, and the urgent need to develop interdisciplinary research and management partnerships to limit the release of plastics into the environment and curb the future impacts of plastic pollution.

Abstract

CR-Rom paper1125; International audience; In order to measure the energy of neutron fields, with energy ranging from 8 keV to 1 MeV, a new primary standard is being developed at the IRSN (Institute for Radioprotection and Nuclear Safety). This project, -TPC (Micro Time Projection Chamber), carried out in collaboration with the LPSC (Laboratoire de Physique Subatomique et de Cosmologie), is based on the nuclear recoil detector principle. The instrument is presented with the associated method to measure the neutron energy. This article emphasizes the proton energy calibration procedure and energy measurements of a neutron field produced at 127 keV with the IRSN facility AMANDE.

Abstract

Because epidemics of successive cropping seasons are not independent, epidemiological studies need to encompass the processes occurring during the transmission of epidemics from one season to the next. With Leptosphaeria maculans, infected stubble allows carry‐over of the fungus. Generation experiments using recurrent selection on field plots are a useful means of comparing the effects of selection pressures. However, the full life cycle of the fungus, from plant infection to the next generation of ascospores, has not yet been achieved under controlled conditions. Studies were undertaken to achieve an experimental set‐up with sexual reproduction under controlled conditions. Cankered oilseed rape stems were produced under controlled conditions, after inoculation with a mixture of 12 isolates across both mating types. Stems were cut longitudinally and attached to styropore plates. Stem halves were incubated outside or in climate chambers regularly soaked in tap water to ensure maturation. Incubation was stopped when mature pseudothecia were observed. In all three independent experiments, more stem halves had pseudothecia when incubated under controlled conditions (30–100%) than incubated outside (0–80%). To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study achieving the full life cycle of the fungus under controlled conditions, from infection of the plant to mature pseudothecia. This opens up the prospect of running experiments year‐round to better understand inoculum production, to compare fungal fitness, or to run generation experiments with exotic pathogen populations. Abstract

Ocean plastic can persist in sea surface waters, eventually accumulating in remote areas of the world’s oceans. Here we characterise and quantify a major ocean plastic accumulation zone formed in subtropical waters between California and Hawaii: The Great Pacific Garbage Patch (GPGP). Our model, calibrated with data from multi-vessel and aircraft surveys, predicted at least 79 (45–129) thousand tonnes of ocean plastic are floating inside an area of 1.6 million km2; a figure four to sixteen times higher than previously reported. We explain this difference through the use of more robust methods to quantify larger debris. Over three-quarters of the GPGP mass was carried by debris larger than 5 cm and at least 46% was comprised of fishing nets. Microplastics accounted for 8% of the total mass but 94% of the estimated 1.8 (1.1–3.6) trillion pieces floating in the area. Plastic collected during our study has specific characteristics such as small surface-to-volume ratio, indicating that only certain types of debris have the capacity to persist and accumulate at the surface of the GPGP. Finally, our results suggest that ocean plastic pollution within the GPGP is increasing exponentially and at a faster rate than in surrounding waters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Directional detection of non-baryonic DarkMatter is a promising search strategy for discriminating WIMP events from background ones. This strategy requires both a measurement of the recoil energy down to a few keV and 3D reconstruction of tracks down to a few mm. The MIMAC project, based on a micro-TPC matrix, filled with CF4 and CHF3 is being developed. The first results of a chamber prototype of this matrix, on low energy nuclear recoils (1H and 19F) obtained with mono-energetic neutron fields are presented. Abstract

Digital technologies foster two types of attitudes: either the enchanted discourse about the wonder of global access to information or the catastrophy of the digital divide which expands the social divide between riche and poor, especially between North and South of the planet. Beyond these attitudes, the present communication aims at reconsidering the nature of relationship between nations in a symbolic perspective of information exchange. Rather than borders between nations we prefer to speak of mutual exchange of cultures and identities. Traduction is a process that permits exchanges and can be carried out due to the universal adoption of digital technologies by the young generations of all continents.

Abstract

The aim is to characterize the energy distribution of neutron fluence in the energy range 8 keV–5 MeV based on a primary standard: the LNE-IRSN/MIMAC microTPC. The microTPC is a time projection chamber. Time projection chambers are gaseous detectors able to measure charged particles energy and to reconstruct their track. The gas is used as a (n, p) converter in order to detect neutrons down to few keV. The neutron energy is reconstructed event by event thanks to proton scattering angle and proton ionization energy measurements. The scattering angle is deduced from the 3-D track. The proton energy is obtained by charge collection measurements, knowing the ionization quenching factor. The fluence is reconstructed thanks to the detected events number and the simulation of the detector response. The microTPC is a new reliable detector able to measure energy distribution of the neutron fluence without unfolding procedure or prior neutron calibration contrary to usual gaseous counters. The microTPC is characterized at the AMANDE facility, with neutron energies going from 8 keV to 565 keV. This work shows the first direct reconstruction of neutron energy and fluence, simultaneously, at 27.2 keV in a continuous irradiation mode. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
