In this paper, three MAC protocols, EE-MAC, CF-MAC and OD-MAC, are proposed. EE-MAC incorporates emergency communication and allows immediate channel access for emergency traffic. CF-MAC compensates regulatory and open-loop control traffic and introduces a prioritized access for high priority nodes. It also allows nodes with critical data to reserve communication slots using control channel. Whereas OD-MAC presents a deadline based dynamic scheduler which ensures timely delivery of time-critical information. The paper presents mathematical modelling of the proposed protocols. For evaluation purposes, the performance of the proposed protocols is compared to IEEE 802.15.4e LLDN. The results show that the proposed protocols offer up to 92% reduction in delay in emergency communications at the cost of 5% to 15% increase in delay of time-insensitive data. A 60% and 85% reduction was observed in the channel access delay for regulatory and open-loop control traffic respectively along with notable improvements in communications reliability.

Autonomous driving technology has been regarded as a promising solution to reduce road accidents and traffic congestion, as well as to optimize the usage of fuel and lane. However, one of the main challenges in autonomous driving is a limited sensing from single vehicle that causes warning and dead-lock situation. The network management in Vehicular network is challenging and demands mobility, location awareness, high reliability and low latency of data traffic which are not feasible or efficiently implemented with today’s network architecture. In this paper, we propose the novel communication architecture for vehicular network with Fifth generation Mobile Networks (5G) and SDN technologies to gain more flexibility and support multiple core networks for vehicular networks and to tackle the potential challenges raised by the autonomous driving vehicles.

We present recent progress on visible light communication systems using polymer light-emitting diodes as the transmitters and a commercial silicon photodetector as the receiver. In this paper, we use transmitters at red, green, and blue wavelengths to investigate the maximum on-off keying link performance of each device type as the first steps toward a wavelength-division multiplexed link. We show that a total transmission speed of 13 Mb/s is achievable when considering the raw bandwidth of each of the RGB PLEDs. Such a rate represents a 30% gain over previously demonstrated systems. Further capacity improvement can be achieved using high performance artificial neural network equalizer offering a realistic prospect for transmission speeds up to 54.9 Mb/s.

This study brought a more complete picture of the investigated phenomenon regarding how an evoked jaw imbalance caused the loss of arm strength and how to recover this strength. It also suggested that the proposed mechanical model, although simple, was a suitable tool to characterize, optimize and allowed further investigations of this phenomenon, and the emitted hypothesis was plausible. It paves the way to new clinical studies with patients to investigate and manage this kind of temporomandibular joint disorder, and to novel investigations in sport medicine.

This paper studies the optimised Lambertian order (OLO) of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) for an indoor non-directed line of sight optical wireless communication (NLOS-OWC) systems. We firstly derive an expression of the OLO from a conventional Lambertian LED model, Then, we analyse the indoor multi-cell NLOS-OWC channel characteristics including optical power distribution and multipath time dispersion for two cases of one-cell and four-cell configurations. Furthermore, we estimate the transmission bandwidth by simulating the channel frequency response. Numerical results show that, by using OLO a significant improvement of the transmission bandwidth can be achieved for in indoor NLOS-OWC systems, in particular, for multi-cell configurations.

In this paper, the effect of turbulence and fog on the free space optical (FSO) communication systems for on off keying (OOK), pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) and subcarrier intensity modulation (SIM) based on binary phase shift keying (BPSK) is experimentally investigated. The experiment is carried out in a controlled laboratory environment where turbulence and fog could be generated in a dedicated FSO chamber. In comparison to 4 PAM signal, the BPSK and OOK NRZ modulation signalling format are more robust against the fog and turbulence effects. In addition BPSK system is much less susceptible to the signal amplitude fluctuation due to turbulence compared to the other two modulation formats.

This paper presents a three dimensions (3D) model of optical power distribution in a diffused cellular indoor visible light communication (VLC) system. To achieve an ideal system which has a maximum coverage area with a minimum power consumption, both hexagon geometric structure and holographic light shaping diffuser (LSD) are employed. We analysed the mathematical models for both square and hexagonal structures with and without using LSD. In addition, the practical system consisting of a (Luxeon Star/O) royal blue LED as a transmitter is used to verify and evaluate the system performance. The system operates at a date rate of 5 Mb/s using the on-off keying non-return-to-zero (OOK-NRZ) modulation format. The simulation results show that using hexagon geometry and a 30o holographic LSD diffuser, the received optical power distribution becomes uniform. The coverage area of the cellular link is therefore significantly extended by 343%. In addition the experimental results for a single cell system are also presented.

This paper experimentally investigates and compares the performance of the free space optics system employing three different modulation schemes, on-off keying (OOK) with nonreturn- to-zero (NRZ) and return-to-zero (RZ) and the binary phase shift keying (BPSK) operating under the turbulent atmosphere. The received average signal is measured and used to characterize the strength of the turbulence. The experiment is performed with a temperature gradient of 4 degrees at a wind velocity of 4 m/s. The temperature gradient within the controlled channel results in turbulence of a log irradiance variance of 0.002, which is classified as a very weak turbulence. The received signal eye diagram and power histograms are presented and analyzed for performance evaluation of the selected modulation schemes in the weak turbulence model.

In this work, we propose a broad-band free space optical (FSO) wireless communications system for high-speed trains. The system consists of optical transceivers positioned outside the train and along the railway track. The train receivers are in the coverage area of base stations positioned along the railway track to ensure continuous link availability. In this paper, we present modelling of two cases for over-ground and underground train systems before embarking to practically implement the system in our research laboratory. Also discussed is the protocol for the data distribution along the track as well as the initial experimental demonstration of the proposed link.

The goal of this research work is to use an all optical based fog sensor to study the atmospheric visibility of fog and its constituents on the optical wireless communication (OWC) links in a controlled laboratory test-bid. The fog sensor measures the transmittance of the Infrared (IR) radiations which is used to determine the link visibility. Experimental results obtained show that using the fog sensor the visibility range from 0.37 – 1 km and above with respect to different fog density can be predicted.

There is a huge demand for seamless high-speed communications in fast moving trains. People want broadband services while on board as in their home or in the workplace. This demand drives the motivation for a high speed dedicated optical wireless link. Here we propose a free space optical ground-to-train communications system which consists of optical transceivers placed on the train and along the railway track. A mathematical model for three different scenarios when the train is moving has been developed. The optical link analysis, results as well as a simple proof of concept are also presented.

This paper presents an all-optical 1xM router architecture for simultaneous multiple-wavelength packet routing, without the need for wavelength conversion. The packet header address is based on the pulse position modulation (PPM) format, which allows the use of only a single-bitwise optical AND gate for fast packet header address correlation. The proposed scheme offers both multicast and broadcast capabilities. We’ve demonstrated a high speed packet routing at 160 Gb/s in simulation, with a low channel crosstalk (CXT) of ~ -27 dB with a channel spacing of > 0.4 THz and a demultiplexer bandwidth of 500 GHz. The output transfer function of the PPM header processing (PPM-HP) module is also investigated in this paper.
