4. Supporting Students' Development of Self-Regulated Learning Using a Diagnostic Questionnaire Tool

Abstract

This paper provides an evaluative report on the use of a questionnaire as a diagnostic tool to support undergraduate students' development of self-regulated learning. The diagnostic tool to be used is the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ). A considerable body of research highlights the significance of self-regulated learning to support student success. This study investigates my application of the MSLQ as a diagnostic tool to support twenty-three undergraduate participants, undertaking a three-year undergraduate professional education degree for practitioners supporting clinical surgery. The students were studying in a higher education institution in the North West of England. The intervention consisted of a presentation to the participants followed by their completion of an eighty-one-point questionnaire. On completion, the emergent data allowed each participant to be informed by tutors of relevant improvement strategies and the support available to them. A focus group generated data that provides insight into the efficacy of then intervention from the perspective of the students.

25. Hierarchical strategies for fault-tolerance in reconfigurable architectures

Abstract

This thesis presents a novel hierarchical fault-tolerance methodology for fault recovery in reconfigurable devices. As the semiconductor industry moves to producing ever smaller transistors, the number of faults occurring increases. At current technology nodes, unavoidable variations in production cause transistor devices to perform outside of ideal ranges. This variability manifests as faults at higher levels and has a knock-on effect for yields. In some ways, fault tolerance has never been more important. To better explore the area of variability, a novel reconfigurable architecture was designed: Programmable Analogue and Digital Array (PAnDA). By allowing reconfiguration from the transistor level to the logic block level, PAnDA allows for design space exploration, previously only available through simulation, in hardware. The main advantage of this is that design modifications can be tested almost instantaneously, as opposed to running time consuming transistor-level simulations. As a result of this design, each level of PAnDA’s configuration contains structural homogeneity, allowing multiple implementations of the same circuit on the same hardware. This potentially creates opportunities for fault tolerance through reconfiguration, and so experimental work is performed to discover how best to utilise these properties of PAnDA. The findings show that it is possible to optimise the reconfiguration in the event of a fault, even if the nature and location of the fault are unknown.

Abstract

Abstract Background CTLA4 blocking monoclonal antibodies provide a low frequency but durable tumor responses in patients with metastatic melanoma, which led to the regulatory approval of ipilimumab based on two randomized clinical trials with overall survival advantage. The similarly fully human anti-CTLA4 antibody tremelimumab had been developed in the clinic at a fixed rate infusion, resulting in very prolonged infusion times. A new formulation of tremelimumab allowed testing a shorter infusion time. Methods A phase 1 multi-center study to establish the safety and tolerability of administering tremelimumab as a 1-hour infusion to patients with metastatic melanoma. Secondary endpoints included pharmacokinetic and clinical effects of tremelimumab. Results No grade 3 or greater infusion-related adverse events or other adverse events preventing the administration of the full tremelimumab dose were noted in 44 treated patients. The overall side effect profile was consistent with prior experiences with anti-CTLA4 antibodies. Objective tumor responses were noted in 11% of evaluable patients with metastatic melanoma, which is also consistent with the prior experience with CTLA4 antagonistic antibodies. Conclusions This study did not identify any safety concerns when tremelimumab was administered as a 1-hour infusion. These data support further clinical testing of the 1-hour infusion of tremelimumab. (Clinical trial registration number NCT00585000).

48. Using Machine Learning to Evaluate Coal Geochemical Data with Respect to Dynamic Failures

Abstract

Dynamic failure events have occurred in the underground coal mining industry since its inception. Recent NIOSH research has identified geochemical markers that correlate with in situ reportable dynamic event occurrence, although the causes behind this correlative relationship remain unclear. In this study, NIOSH researchers conducted machine learning analysis to examine whether a model could be constructed to assess the probability of dynamic failure occurrence based on geochemical and petrographic data. Linear regression, random forest, dimensionality reduction, and cluster analyses were applied to a catalog of dynamic failure and control data from the Pennsylvania Coal Sample Databank, cross-referenced with accident data from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Analyses determined that 7 of the 18 geochemical parameters that were examined had the biggest impact on model performance. Classifications based on logistic regression and random forest models attained precision values of 85.7% and 96.7%, respectively. Dimensionality reduction was used to explore patterns and groupings in the data and to search for relationships between compositional parameters. Cluster analyses were performed to determine if an algorithm could find clusters with given class memberships and to what extent misclassifications of dynamic failure status occurred. Cluster analysis using a hierarchal clustering algorithm after dimensionality reduction resulted in four clusters, with one relatively distinct dynamic failure cluster, and three clusters mostly consisting of control group members but with a small number of dynamic failure members.
