Milky Way analogues (MWAs) provide an alternative insight into the various pathways that lead to the formation of disc galaxies with similar properties to the Milky Way (MW). In this study, we explore different selection techniques for identifying MWAs in the Sydney-AAO (Australian Astronomical Observatory) Multi-object Integral field spectrograph (SAMI) Galaxy Survey. We utilize a nearest neighbours method to define MWAs using four selection parameters including stellar mass (⁠|$M_{\star }$|⁠), star formation rate (⁠|$\rm SFR$|⁠), bulge-to-total ratio (⁠|$B/T$|⁠), and disc effective radius (⁠|$R_{\rm {e}}$|⁠). Based on 15 different selection combinations, we find that including |$M_{\star }$| and SFR is essential for minimizing biases in the average MWA properties as compared to the MW. Furthermore, given the MW's smaller than average size, selection combinations without |$R_{\rm {e}}$| result in MWAs being too large. Lastly, we find that |$B/T$| is the least important parameter out of the four tested parameters. Using all four selection criteria, we define the top 10 most MW-like galaxies in the GAMA and Cluster regions of the SAMI survey. These most MW-like galaxies are typically barred spirals, with kinematically cold rotating discs and reside in a wide range of environments. Surprisingly, we find no significant differences between the MWAs selected from the GAMA and Cluster regions. Most dynamical models of galaxies to date assume axisymmetry, which is not representative of a significant fraction of massive galaxies. We have built triaxial orbit-superposition Schwarzschild models of galaxies observed by the SAMI Galaxy Survey, in order to reconstruct their inner orbital structure and mass distribution. The sample consists of 153 passive galaxies with total stellar masses in the range 109.5 to |$10^{12} \, {\rm M}_{\odot }$|⁠. We present an analysis of the internal structures and intrinsic properties of these galaxies as a function of their environment. We measure their environment using three proxies: central or satellite designation, halo mass and local 5th nearest neighbour galaxy density. We find that although these intrinsic properties correlate most strongly with stellar mass, environment does play a secondary role: at fixed stellar mass, galaxies in the densest regions are more radially anisotropic. In addition, central galaxies, and galaxies in high local densities show lower values of edge-on spin parameter proxy λRe, EO. We also find suggestions of a possible trend of the fractions of orbits with environment for lower mass galaxies (between 109.5 and |$10^{11} \, {\rm M}_{\odot }$|⁠) such that, at fixed stellar mass, galaxies in higher local densities and halo mass have higher fractions of hot orbits and lower fractions of warm orbits. We study the alignments of galaxy spin axes with respect to cosmic web filaments as a function of various properties of the galaxies and their constituent bulges and discs. We exploit the SAMI Galaxy Survey to identify 3D spin axes from spatially resolved stellar kinematics and to decompose the galaxy into the kinematic bulge and disc components. The GAMA survey is used to reconstruct the cosmic filaments. The mass of the bulge, defined as the product of stellar mass and bulge-to-total flux ratio M bulge = M ⋆ × (B/T), is the primary parameter of correlation with spin–filament alignments: galaxies with lower bulge masses tend to have their spins parallel to the closest filament, while galaxies with higher bulge masses are more perpendicularly aligned. M ⋆ and B/T separately show correlations, but they do not fully unravel spin–filament alignments. Other galaxy properties, such as visual morphology, stellar age, star formation activity, kinematic parameters, and local environment, are secondary tracers. Focussing on S0 galaxies, we find preferentially perpendicular alignments, with the signal dominated by high-mass S0 galaxies. Studying bulge and disc spin–filament alignments separately reveals additional information about the formation pathways of the corresponding galaxies: bulges tend to have more perpendicular alignments, while discs show different tendencies according to their kinematic features and the mass of the associated bulge. The observed correlation between the flipping of spin–filament alignments and the growth of the bulge can be explained by mergers, which drive both alignment flips and bulge formation. Using data from the SAMI Galaxy Survey, we investigate the correlation between the projected stellar kinematic spin vector of 1397 SAMI galaxies and the line-of-sight motion of their neighbouring galaxies. We calculate the luminosity-weighted mean velocity difference between SAMI galaxies and their neighbours in the direction perpendicular to the SAMI galaxies' angular momentum axes. The luminosity-weighted mean velocity offset between SAMI galaxies and neighbours, which indicates the signal of coherence between the rotation of the SAMI galaxies and the motion of neighbours, is 9.0 ± 5.4 km s−1 (1.7σ) for neighbours within 1 Mpc. In a large-scale analysis, we find that the average velocity offsets increase for neighbours out to 2 Mpc. However, the velocities are consistent with zero or negative for neighbours outside 3 Mpc. The negative signals for neighbours at a distance around 10 Mpc are also significant at the ∼2σ level, which indicate that the positive signals within 2 Mpc might come from the variance of large-scale structure. We also calculate average velocities of different subsamples, including galaxies in different regions of the sky, galaxies with different stellar masses, galaxy type, λRe, and inclination. Although subsamples of low-mass, high-mass, early-type, and low-spin galaxies show the 2–3σ signal of coherence for the neighbours within 2 Mpc, the results for different inclination subsamples and large-scale results suggest that the ∼2σ signals might result from coincidental scatter or variance of large-scale structure. Overall, the modest evidence of coherence signals for neighbouring galaxies within 2 Mpc needs to be confirmed by larger samples of observations and simulation studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We explore a sample of 1492 galaxies with measurements of the mean stellar population properties and the spin parameter proxy, |$\lambda _{R_{\rm {e}}}$|⁠ , drawn from the SAMI Galaxy Survey. We fit a global |$[\alpha /\rm {Fe}]$| –σ relation, finding that |${[\alpha /\rm {Fe}]}=(0.395\pm 0.010)\rm {log}_{10}(\sigma)-(0.627\pm 0.002)$|⁠. We observe an anti-correlation between the residuals |$\Delta [\alpha /\rm {Fe}]$| and the inclination-corrected |$\lambda _{\, R_{\rm {e}}}^{\rm {\, eo}}$|⁠ , which can be expressed as |${\Delta [\alpha /\rm {Fe}]}=(-0.057\pm 0.008){\lambda _{\, R_{\rm {e}}}^{\rm {\, eo}}}+(0.020\pm 0.003)$|⁠. The anti-correlation appears to be driven by star-forming galaxies, with a gradient of |${\Delta [\alpha /\rm {Fe}]}\sim (-0.121\pm 0.015){\lambda _{\, R_{\rm {e}}}^{\rm {\, eo}}}$|⁠ , although a weak relationship persists for the subsample of galaxies for which star formation has been quenched. We take this to be confirmation that disc-dominated galaxies have an extended duration of star formation. At a reference velocity dispersion of 200 km s−1, we estimate an increase in half-mass formation time from ∼0.5 Gyr to ∼1.2 Gyr from low- to high- |$\lambda _{\, R_{\rm {e}}}^{\rm {\, eo}}$| galaxies. Slow rotators do not appear to fit these trends. Their residual α-enhancement is indistinguishable from other galaxies with |${\lambda _{\, R_{\rm {e}}}^{\rm {\, eo}}}\lessapprox 0.4$|⁠ , despite being both larger and more massive. This result shows that galaxies with |${\lambda _{\, R_{\rm {e}}}^{\rm {\, eo}}}\lessapprox 0.4$| experience a similar range of star formation histories, despite their different physical structure and angular momentum. We investigate the mean locally measured velocity dispersions of ionized gas (σgas) and stars (σ*) for 1090 galaxies with stellar masses |$\log \, (M_{\!\ast }/M_{\odot }) \ge 9.5$| from the SAMI Galaxy Survey. For star-forming galaxies, σ* tends to be larger than σgas, suggesting that stars are in general dynamically hotter than the ionized gas (asymmetric drift). The difference between σgas and σ* (Δσ) correlates with various galaxy properties. We establish that the strongest correlation of Δσ is with beam smearing, which inflates σgas more than σ*, introducing a dependence of Δσ on both the effective radius relative to the point spread function and velocity gradients. The second strongest correlation is with the contribution of active galactic nuclei (AGN) (or evolved stars) to the ionized gas emission, implying that the gas velocity dispersion is strongly affected by the power source. In contrast, using the velocity dispersion measured from integrated spectra (σap) results in less correlation between the aperture-based Δσ (Δσap) and the power source. This suggests that the AGN (or old stars) dynamically heat the gas without causing significant deviations from dynamical equilibrium. Although the variation of Δσap is much smaller than that of Δσ, a correlation between Δσap and gas velocity gradient is still detected, implying that there is a small bias in dynamical masses derived from stellar and ionized gas velocity dispersions. The performance of natural guide star adaptive-optics systems for telescopes located on the Antarctic plateau is evaluated and compared with adaptive-optics systems operated with the characteristic midlatitude atmosphere found at Mauna Kea. A 2-m telescope with tip-tilt correction and an 8-m telescope equipped with a high-order adaptive-optics system are considered. Because of the large isoplanatic angle of the South Pole atmosphere, the anisoplanatic error associated with an adaptive-optics correction is negligible, and the achievable resolution is determined only by the fitting error associated with the number of corrected wave-front modes, which depends on the number of actuators on the deformable mirror. The usable field of view of an adaptive-optics equipped Antarctic telescope is thus orders of magnitude larger than for a similar telescope located at a mid-latitude site; this large field of view obviates the necessity for multiconjugate adaptive-optics systems that use multiple laser guide stars. These results, combined with the low infrared sky backgrounds, indicate that the Antarctic plateau is the best site on Earth at which to perform high-resolution imaging with large telescopes, either over large fields of view or with appreciable sky coverage. Preliminary site-testing results obtained recently from the Dome Concordia station indicate that this site is far superior to even the South Pole.

We present a new set of index-based measurements of [α/Fe] for a sample of 2093 galaxies in the SAMI Galaxy Survey. Following earlier work, we fit a global relation between [α/Fe] and the galaxy velocity dispersion σ for red sequence galaxies, |$[\alpha /\text{Fe}]=(0.378\pm 0.009)\rm {log}_{10}\left(\sigma /100\right)+(0.155\pm 0.003)$|⁠. We observe a correlation between the residuals and the local environmental surface density, whereas no such relation exists for blue cloud galaxies. In the full sample, we find that elliptical galaxies in high-density environments are α-enhanced by up to 0.057 ± 0.014 dex at velocity dispersions σ < 100 km s−1, compared with those in low-density environments. This α-enhancement is morphology-dependent, with the offset decreasing along the Hubble sequence towards spirals, which have an offset of 0.019 ± 0.014 dex. At low velocity dispersion and controlling for morphology, we estimate that star formation in high-density environments is truncated ∼1 Gyr earlier than in low-density environments. For elliptical galaxies only, we find support for a parabolic relationship between [α/Fe] and σ, with an environmental α-enhancement of at least 0.03 dex. Large galaxy samples from multiobject integral field spectroscopic (IFS) surveys now allow for a statistical analysis of the z ∼ 0 galaxy population using resolved kinematic measurements. However, the improvement in number statistics comes at a cost, with multiobject IFS survey more severely impacted by the effect of seeing and lower signal-to-noise ratio. We present an analysis of ∼1800 galaxies from the SAMI Galaxy Survey taking into account these effects. We investigate the spread and overlap in the kinematic distributions of the spin parameter proxy |$\lambda _{R_{\rm {e}}}$| as a function of stellar mass and ellipticity ε e. For SAMI data, the distributions of galaxies identified as regular and non-regular rotators with kinemetry show considerable overlap in the |$\lambda _{R_{\rm {e}}}$| – ε e diagram. In contrast, visually classified galaxies (obvious and non-obvious rotators) are better separated in |$\lambda _{R_{\rm {e}}}$| space, with less overlap of both distributions. Then, we use a Bayesian mixture model to analyse the observed |$\lambda _{R_{\rm {e}}}$| –log (M ⋆/M⊙) distribution. By allowing the mixture probability to vary as a function of mass, we investigate whether the data are best fit with a single kinematic distribution or with two. Below log (M ⋆/M⊙) ∼ 10.5, a single beta distribution is sufficient to fit the complete |$\lambda _{R_{\rm {e}}}$| distribution, whereas a second beta distribution is required above log (M ⋆/M⊙) ∼ 10.5 to account for a population of low- |$\lambda _{R_{\rm {e}}}$| galaxies. While the Bayesian mixture model presents the cleanest separation of the two kinematic populations, we find the unique information provided by visual classification of galaxy kinematic maps should not be disregarded in future studies. Applied to mock-observations from different cosmological simulations, the mixture model also predicts bimodal |$\lambda _{R_{\rm {e}}}$| distributions, albeit with different positions of the |$\lambda _{R_{\rm {e}}}$| peaks. Our analysis validates the conclusions from previous, smaller IFS surveys, but also demonstrates the importance of using selection criteria for identifying different kinematic classes that are dictated by the quality and resolution of the observed or simulated data. We measure the gas-phase metallicity gradients of 248 galaxies selected from Data Release 2 of the SAMI Galaxy Survey. We demonstrate that there are large systematic discrepancies between the metallicity gradients derived using common strong emission line metallicity diagnostics. We determine which pairs of diagnostics have Spearman's rank coefficients greater than 0.6 and provide linear conversions to allow the accurate comparison of metallicity gradients derived using different strong emission line diagnostics. For galaxies within the mass range 8.5 < log (M /M⊙) < 11.0, we find discrepancies of up to 0.11 dex/ R e between seven popular diagnostics in the metallicity gradient–mass relation. We find a suggestion of a break in the metallicity gradient–mass relation, where the slope shifts from negative to positive, occurs between 9.5 < log (M /M⊙) < 10.5 for the seven chosen diagnostics. Applying our conversions to the metallicity gradient–mass relation, we reduce the maximum dispersion from 0.11 dex/ R e to 0.02 dex/ R e. These conversions provide the most accurate method of converting metallicity gradients when key emission lines are unavailable. We find that diagnostics that share common sets of emission line ratios agree best, and that diagnostics calibrated through the electron temperature provide more consistent results compared to those calibrated through photoionization models. It has been proposed that S0 galaxies are either fading spirals or the result of galaxy mergers. The relative contribution of each pathway and the environments in which they occur remain unknown. Here, we investigate stellar and gas kinematics of 219 S0s in the SAMI Survey to look for signs of multiple formation pathways occurring across the full range of environments. We identify a large range of rotational support in their stellar kinematics, which correspond to ranges in their physical structure. We find that pressure-supported S0s with v / σ below 0.5 tend to be more compact and feature misaligned stellar and gas components, suggesting an external origin for their gas. We postulate that these S0s are consistent with being formed through a merger process. Meanwhile, comparisons of ellipticity, stellar mass, and Sérsic index distributions with spiral galaxies show that the rotationally supported S0s with v / σ above 0.5 are more consistent with a faded spiral origin. In addition, a simulated merger pathway involving a compact elliptical and gas-rich satellite results in an S0 that lies within the pressure-supported group. We conclude that two S0 formation pathways are active, with mergers dominating in isolated galaxies and small groups, and the faded spiral pathway being most prominent in large groups (⁠|$10^{13}\lt \rm {M_{halo}}\lt 10^{14}$|⁠). We investigate the stellar kinematics of the bulge and disk components in 826 galaxies with a wide range of morphology from the Sydney-AAO Multi-object Integral-field spectroscopy Galaxy Survey. The spatially resolved rotation velocity (V) and velocity dispersion (σ) of bulge and disk components have been simultaneously estimated using the penalized pixel fitting (ppxf) method with photometrically defined weights for the two components. We introduce a new subroutine of ppxf for dealing with degeneracy in the solutions. We show that the V and σ distributions in each galaxy can be reconstructed using the kinematics and weights of the bulge and disk components. The combination of two distinct components provides a consistent description of the major kinematic features of galaxies over a wide range of morphological types. We present Tully–Fisher and Faber–Jackson relations showing that the galaxy stellar mass scales with both V and σ for both components of all galaxy types. We find a tight Faber–Jackson relation even for the disk component. We show that the bulge and disk components are kinematically distinct: (1) the two components show scaling relations with similar slopes, but different intercepts; (2) the spin parameter λ R indicates bulges are pressure-dominated systems and disks are supported by rotation; and (3) the bulge and disk components have, respectively, low and high values in intrinsic ellipticity. We infer the intrinsic ionized gas kinematics for 383 star-forming galaxies across a range of integrated star formation rates (SFR ∈ [10−3, 102] M⊙ yr−1) at z ≲ 0.1 using a consistent 3D forward-modelling technique. The total sample is a combination of galaxies from the Sydney-AAO Multiobject Integral field Spectrograph (SAMI) Galaxy survey and DYnamics of Newly Assembled Massive Objects survey. For typical low- z galaxies taken from the SAMI Galaxy Survey, we find the vertical velocity dispersion (σ v,z ) to be positively correlated with measures of SFR, stellar mass, H  i gas mass, and rotational velocity. The greatest correlation is with SFR surface density (ΣSFR). Using the total sample, we find σ v,z increases slowly as a function of integrated SFR in the range SFR ∈ [10−3, 1]  M⊙ yr−1 from 17 ± 3 to 24 ± 5 km s−1 followed by a steeper increase up to σ v,z ∼80 km s−1 for SFR ≳ 1 M⊙ yr−1. This is consistent with recent theoretical models that suggest a σ v,z floor driven by star formation feedback processes with an upturn in σ v,z at higher SFR driven by gravitational transport of gas through the disc. We examine the stellar population radial gradients (age, metallicity, and [α/Fe]) of 96 passive central galaxies up to ∼2 Re in the SAMI Galaxy Survey. The targeted groups have a halo mass range of. The main goal of this work is to determine whether central galaxies have different stellar population properties when compared to similarly massive satellite galaxies. For the whole sample, we find negative metallicity radial gradients, which show evidence of becoming shallower with increasing stellar mass. The age and [α/Fe] gradients are slightly positive and consistent with zero, respectively. The [α/Fe] gradients become more negative with increasing mass, while the age gradients do not show any significant trend with mass. We do not observe a significant difference between the stellar population gradients of central and satellite galaxies at fixed stellar mass. The mean metallicity gradients are for central galaxies and for satellites. The mean age and [α/Fe] gradients are consistent between central and satellite galaxies, within the uncertainties, with a mean value of for centrals and for satellites and for centrals and for satellites. The stellar population gradients of central and satellite galaxies show no difference as a function of halo mass. This evidence suggests that the inner regions of central passive galaxies form in a similar fashion to those of satellite passive galaxies, in agreement with a two-phase formation scenario. The characterization of exoplanets is critical to understanding planet diversity and formation, their atmospheric composition, and the potential for life. This endeavour is greatly enhanced when light from the planet can be spatially separated from that of the host star. One potential method is nulling interferometry, where the contaminating starlight is removed via destructive interference. The GLINT instrument is a photonic nulling interferometer with novel capabilities that has now been demonstrated in on-sky testing. The instrument fragments the telescope pupil into sub-apertures that are injected into waveguides within a single-mode photonic chip. Here, all requisite beam splitting, routing, and recombination are performed using integrated photonic components. We describe the design, construction, and laboratory testing of our GLINT pathfinder instrument. We then demonstrate the efficacy of this method on sky at the Subaru Telescope, achieving a null-depth precision on sky of ∼10−4 and successfully determining the angular diameter of stars (via their null-depth measurements) to milliarcsecond accuracy. We study the behaviour of the spin-ellipticity radial tracks for 507 galaxies from the Sydney AAO Multiobject Integral Field (SAMI) Galaxy Survey with stellar kinematics out to ≥1.5 R e. We advocate for a morpho-dynamical classification of galaxies, relying on spatially resolved photometric and kinematic data. We find the use of spin-ellipticity radial tracks is valuable in identifying substructures within a galaxy, including embedded and counter-rotating discs, that are easily missed in unilateral studies of the photometry alone. Conversely, bars are rarely apparent in the stellar kinematics but are readily identified on images. Consequently, we distinguish the spin-ellipticity radial tracks of seven morpho-dynamical types: elliptical, lenticular, early spiral, late spiral, barred spiral, embedded disc, and 2σ galaxies. The importance of probing beyond the inner radii of galaxies is highlighted by the characteristics of galactic features in the spin-ellipticity radial tracks present at larger radii. The density of information presented through spin-ellipticity radial tracks emphasizes a clear advantage to representing galaxies as a track, rather than a single point, in spin-ellipticity parameter space. We study the internal radial gradients of the stellar populations in a sample comprising 522 early-type galaxies (ETGs) from the SAMI (Sydney-AAO Multi-object Integral field spectrograph) Galaxy Survey. We stack the spectra of individual spaxels in radial bins, and derive basic stellar population properties: total metallicity ([Z/H]), [Mg/Fe], [C/Fe] and age. The radial gradient (∇) and central value of the fits (evaluated at R e/4) are compared against a set of six observables that may act as drivers of the trends. We find that velocity dispersion (σ) – or, equivalently gravitational potential – is the dominant driver of the chemical composition gradients. Surface mass density is also correlated with the trends, especially with stellar age. The decrease of ∇[Mg/Fe] with increasing σ is contrasted by a rather shallow dependence of ∇[Z/H] with σ (although this radial gradient is overall rather steep). This result, along with a shallow age slope at the massive end, imposes a substantial constraint on the progenitors of the populations that contribute to the formation of the outer envelopes of ETGs. The SAMI sample is split, by design, between 'field' and cluster galaxies. Only weak environment-related differences are found, most notably a stronger dependence of central total metallicity ([Z/H]e4) with σ, along with a marginal trend of ∇[Z/H] to steepen in cluster galaxies, a result that is not followed by [Mg/Fe]. We present a novel Bayesian method, referred to as blobby3d, to infer gas kinematics that mitigates the effects of beam smearing for observations using integral field spectroscopy. The method is robust for regularly rotating galaxies despite substructure in the gas distribution. Modelling the gas substructure within the disc is achieved by using a hierarchical Gaussian mixture model. To account for beam smearing effects, we construct a modelled cube that is then convolved per wavelength slice by the seeing, before calculating the likelihood function. We show that our method can model complex gas substructure including clumps and spiral arms. We also show that kinematic asymmetries can be observed after beam smearing for regularly rotating galaxies with asymmetries only introduced in the spatial distribution of the gas. We present findings for our method applied to a sample of 20 star-forming galaxies from the SAMI Galaxy Survey. We estimate the global H α gas velocity dispersion for our sample to be in the range |$\bar{\sigma }_v \sim$| [7, 30] km s−1. The relative difference between our approach and estimates using the single Gaussian component fits per spaxel is |$\Delta \bar{\sigma }_v / \bar{\sigma }_v = - 0.29 \pm 0.18$| for the H α flux-weighted mean velocity dispersion. Cosmological hydrodynamical simulations are rich tools to understand the build-up of stellar mass and angular momentum in galaxies, but require some level of calibration to observations. We compare predictions at |$z$| ∼ 0 from the eagle, hydrangea, horizon-agn, and magneticum simulations with integral field spectroscopic (IFS) data from the SAMI (Sydney-AAO Multi-object Integral field spectrograph) Galaxy Survey, ATLAS3D, CALIFA (Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area), and MASSIVE surveys. The main goal of this work is to simultaneously compare structural, dynamical, and stellar population measurements in order to identify key areas of success and tension. We have taken great care to ensure that our simulated measurement methods match the observational methods as closely as possible, and we construct samples that match the observed stellar mass distribution for the combined IFS sample. We find that the eagle and hydrangea simulations reproduce many galaxy relations but with some offsets at high stellar masses. There are moderate mismatches in R e (+), ε (−), σe (−), and mean stellar age (+), where a plus sign indicates that quantities are too high on average, and minus sign too low. The horizon-agn simulations qualitatively reproduce several galaxy relations, but there are a number of properties where we find a quantitative offset to observations. Massive galaxies are better matched to observations than galaxies at low and intermediate masses. Overall, we find mismatches in R e (+), ε (−), σe (−), and (V /σ)e (−). magneticum matches observations well: this is the only simulation where we find ellipticities typical for disc galaxies, but there are moderate differences in σe (−), (V /σ)e (−), and mean stellar age (+). Our comparison between simulations and observational data has highlighted several areas for improvement, such as the need for improved modelling resulting in a better vertical disc structure, yet our results demonstrate the vast improvement of cosmological simulations in recent years. The fraction of galaxies supported by internal rotation compared to galaxies stabilized by internal pressure provides a strong constraint on galaxy formation models. In integral field spectroscopy surveys, this fraction is biased because survey instruments typically only trace the inner parts of the most massive galaxies. We present aperture corrections for the two most widely used stellar kinematic quantities V/σ and λR (spin parameter proxy). Our demonstration involves integral field data from the SAMI (Sydney-AAO Multi-object Integral-field spectrograph) Galaxy Survey and the ATLAS3D survey. We find a tight relation for both V/σ and λR when measured in different apertures that can be used as a linear transformation as a function of radius, i.e. a first-order aperture correction. In degraded seeing, however, the aperture corrections are more significant as the steeper inner profile is more strongly affected by the point spread function than the outskirts. We find that V/σ and λR radial growth curves are well approximated by second-order polynomials. By only fitting the inner profile (0.5Re), we successfully recover the profile out to one Re if a constraint between the linear and quadratic parameter in the fit is applied. However, the aperture corrections for V/σ and λR derived by extrapolating the profiles perform as well as applying a first-order correction. With our aperture-corrected λR measurements, we find that the fraction of slow rotating galaxies increases with stellar mass. For galaxies with logM*/M☉ > 11, the fraction of slow rotators is 35.9 ± 4.3 per cent, but is underestimated if galaxies without coverage beyond one Re are not included in the sample (24.2 ± 5.3 per cent). With measurements out to the largest aperture radius, the slow rotator fraction is similar as compared to using aperture-corrected values (38.3 ± 4.4 per cent). Thus, aperture effects can significantly bias stellar kinematic integral field spectrograph studies, but this bias can now be removed with the method outlined here. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present an analysis of the global stellar populations of galaxies in the SAMI (Sydney- AAO Multi-object Integral field spectrograph) Galaxy Survey. Our sample consists of 1319 galaxies spanning four orders of magnitude in stellar mass and includes all morphologies and environments. We derive luminosity-weighted, single stellar population equivalent stellar ages, metallicities and alpha enhancements from spectra integrated within one effective radius apertures. Variations in galaxy size explain the majority of the scatter in the age-mass and metallicity-mass relations. Stellar populations vary systematically in the plane of galaxy size and stellar mass, such that galaxies with high stellar surface mass density are older, more metal rich and alpha enhanced than less dense galaxies. Galaxies with high surface mass densities have a very narrow range of metallicities; however, at fixed mass, the spread in metallicity increases substantially with increasing galaxy size (decreasing density). We identify residual correlations with morphology and environment. At fixed mass and size, galaxies with late-type morphologies, small bulges and low Sérsic n are younger than early type, high n, high bulgeto- total galaxies. Both age and metallicity show small residual correlations with environment; at fixed mass and size, galaxies in denser environments or more massive haloes are older and somewhat more metal rich than those in less dense environments. We investigate the energy sources of random turbulent motions of ionized gas from Ha emission in eight local star-forming galaxies from the Sydney-AAO Multi-object Integral field spectrograph (SAMI) Galaxy Survey. These galaxies satisfy strict pure star-forming selection criteria to avoid contamination from active galactic nuclei (AGNs) or strong shocks/outflows. Using the relatively high spatial and spectral resolution of SAMI, we find that - on sub-kpc scales, our galaxies display a flat distribution of ionized gas velocity dispersion as a function of star formation rate (SFR) surface density. A major fraction of our SAMI galaxies shows higher velocity dispersion than predictions by feedback-driven models, especially at the low SFR surface density end. Our results suggest that additional sources beyond star formation feedback contribute to driving random motions of the interstellar medium in star-forming galaxies.We speculate that gravity, galactic shear and/or magnetorotational instability may be additional driving sources of turbulence in these galaxies. We investigate a sample of 40 local, main-sequence, edge-on disc galaxies using integral field spectroscopy with the Sydney-AAO Multi-object Integral field spectrograph (SAMI) Galaxy Survey to understand the link between properties of the extraplanar gas and their host galaxies. The kinematics properties of the extraplanar gas, including velocity asymmetries and increased dispersion, are used to differentiate galaxies hosting large-scale galactic winds from those dominated by the extended diffuse ionized gas. We find rather that a spectrum of diffuse gas-dominated to wind-dominated galaxies exist. The wind-dominated galaxies span a wide range of star formation rates (SFRs; -1 ≲ log?(SFR/M⊙?yr-1) ≲ 0.5) across the whole stellar mass range of the sample (8.5 ≲ log (M*/M⊙) ≲ 11). The wind galaxies also span a wide range in SFR surface densities (10-3-10-1.5?M⊙?yr-1?kpc-2) that is much lower than the canonical threshold of 0.1?M⊙?yr-1?kpc-2. The wind galaxies on average have higher SFR surface densities and higher HδA values than those without strong wind signatures. The enhanced HδA indicates that bursts of star formation in the recent past are necessary for driving large-scale galactic winds. We demonstrate with Sloan Digital Sky Survey data that galaxies with high SFR surface density have experienced bursts of star formation in the recent past. Our results imply that the galactic winds revealed in our study are indeed driven by bursts of star formation, and thus probing star formation in the time domain is crucial for finding and understanding galactic winds. We demonstrate the feasibility and potential of using large integral field spectroscopic surveys to investigate the prevalence of galactic-scale outflows in the local Universe. Using integral field data from the Sydney-AAO Multi-object Integral field spectrograph (SAMI) and the Wide Field Spectrograph, we study the nature of an isolated disc galaxy, SDSS J090005.05+000446.7 (z = 0.053 86). In the integral field data sets, the galaxy presents skewed line profiles changing with position in the galaxy. The skewed line profiles are caused by different kinematic components overlapping in the line-of-sight direction. We perform spectral decomposition to separate the line profiles in each spatial pixel as combinations of (1) a narrow kinematic component consistent with H ii regions, (2) a broad kinematic component consistent with shock excitation, and (3) an intermediate component consistent with shock excitation and photoionization mixing. The three kinematic components have distinctly different velocity fields, velocity dispersions, line ratios, and electron densities. We model the line ratios, velocity dispersions, and electron densities with our mappings iv shock and photoionization models, and we reach remarkable agreement between the data and the models. The models demonstrate that the different emission line properties are caused by major galactic outflows that introduce shock excitation in addition to photoionization by star-forming activities. Interstellar shocks embedded in the outflows shock-excite and compress the gas, causing the elevated line ratios, velocity dispersions, and electron densities observed in the broad kinematic component. We argue from energy considerations that, with the lack of a powerful active galactic nucleus, the outflows are likely to be driven by starburst activities. The first demonstration of narrowband spectral filtering of multimode light on a 3D integrated photonic chip using photonic lanterns and waveguide Bragg gratings is reported. The photonic lanterns with multi-notch waveguide Bragg gratings were fabricated using the femtosecond direct-write technique in boro-aluminosilicate glass (Corning, Eagle 2000). Transmission dips of up to 5 dB were measured in both photonic lanterns and reference single-mode waveguides with 10.4-mm-long gratings. The result demonstrates efficient and symmetrical performance of each of the gratings in the photonic lantern. Such devices will be beneficial to space-division multiplexed communication systems as well as for units for astronomical instrumentation for suppression of the atmospheric telluric emission from OH lines.
