4. Theoretical Model for Applying Agency and Resource Dependency to Public Higher Education

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to provide a theoretical model for public higher education. Significant financial challenges are affecting the future of the public higher education sector of the United States. With a decline in enrollments in conjunction with minimal increases in state funding sources, many have speculated what the future holds for these institutions. The agency theory and resource dependency theories can be utilized to research these topics. Agency theory describes a relationship between a principal, in this case the individual states across the U.S., and an agent, the public higher educational institutions, whereby the agent performs duties on the principal's behalf. The institutions provide educational opportunities for the citizens of the respective state for appropriate funding allocations from the state's budget. The resource dependency theory describes the behavioral implications on organizational processes of being dependent on a limited number of resources. For public higher education systems, they are dependent upon two major sources of income: state appropriations and student tuition. The balance between these income sources can impact the principal/agent relationship between the state and their respective higher education institutions.

11. Assessing Connectedness in an Online MBA Course

Abstract

The purpose of paper was to assess connectedness that students felt in an online MBA course in which they were registered. Effective online instructors know that their students may succeed or fail depending upon many factors. The factors assessed in this study focused on building trust and a sense of connection between the instructor, students, and the materials. The ultimate goal of this study was to find ways to help students participate, collaborate, and actively engage in purposive activities within the online learning environment. A research model was chosen and used as the framework for developing a survey that would be distributed to students registered in an online MBA course.

Abstract

The goal of Inductive Logic Programming (ILP) is to find a hypothesis that explains a set of examples in the context of some pre-existing background knowledge. Until recently, most research on ILP targeted learning definite logic programs. This thesis constitutes the first comprehensive work on learning answer set programs, introducing new learning frameworks, theoretical results on the complexity and generality of these frameworks, algorithms for learning ASP programs, and an extensive evaluation of these algorithms. Although there is previous work on learning ASP programs, existing learning frameworks are either brave -- where examples should be explained by at least one answer set -- or cautious where examples should be explained by all answer sets. There are cases where brave induction is too weak and cautious induction is too strong. Our proposed frameworks combine brave and cautious learning and can learn ASP programs containing choice rules and constraints. Many applications of ASP use weak constraints to express a preference ordering over the answer sets of a program. Learning weak constraints corresponds to preference learning, which we achieve by introducing ordering examples. We then explore the generality of our frameworks, investigating what it means for a framework to be general enough to distinguish one hypothesis from another. We show that our frameworks are more general than both brave and cautious induction. We also present a new family of algorithms, called ILASP (Inductive Learning of Answer Set Programs), which we prove to be sound and complete. This work concerns learning from both non-noisy and noisy examples. In the latter case, ILASP returns a hypothesis that maximises the coverage of examples while minimising the length of the hypothesis. In our evaluation, we show that ILASP scales to tasks with large numbers of examples finding accurate hypotheses even in the presence of high proportions of noisy examples.

Abstract

Dopant profiles near the semiconductor–oxide interface are critical for microelectronic device performance. As the incorporation of Si1−xGex into transistors continues to increase, it is necessary to understand the behavior of dopants in Si1−xGex. In this paper, the diffusion and electrical activation of phosphorus within a strained, single-crystal Si0.7Ge0.3 layer on Si during oxidation are reported. Both layers were uniformly doped, in situ, with an average phosphorus concentration of 4 × 1019 atoms/cm3. After high-temperature oxidation, secondary ion mass spectrometry measurements revealed that the bulk of the phosphorus diffuses out of only the SiGe layer and segregates at the oxidizing SiGe–SiO2 interface. Hall effect measurements corroborate the observed phosphorus loss and show that the phosphorus diffusing to the oxidizing interface is electrically inactive. Through density functional theory (DFT) calculations, it is shown that phosphorus interstitials prefer sites near the SiGe–SiO2 interface. Finally, based on a combination of experimental data and DFT calculations, we propose that the phosphorus atoms are displaced from their lattice sites by Ge interstitials that are generated during SiGe oxidation. The phosphorus atoms then migrate toward the SiGe–SiO2 interface through a novel mechanism of hopping between Ge sites as P–Ge split interstitials. Once they reach the interface, they are electrically inactive, potentially in the form of interstitial clusters or as part of the reconstructed interface or oxide. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of the study is two-fold with respect to Emotional Intelligence. First, the researchers will explore the differences of emotional intelligence examined by students' discipline within the school of business in a liberal arts college. Secondly, the researchers will analyze the implications for educators, administrators, researchers, and other interested parties. Findings, conclusions, and recommendations will be presented.

31. Spectroscopic studies of bonding and structural characteristics of small molecules

Abstract

Infrared overtone absorption spectra of vapour phase methyl fluoride, and methyl bromide-d3 have been measured and these results, combined with existing near infrared and visible spectra, have been analysed in terms of a model of local mode C-H/D stretching vibrations including the effects of Fermi resonances with the overtones of the C-H/D bending modes. Comparable analyses of CH3Cl, CH3Br, CH3I and CHD2Cl, up to 6 quanta of C-H stretching, improve earlier studies through the more quantitative treatment of the stretch/bend interactions. The empirical vibration frequencies, anharmonicity constants and vibration interaction constants determined in these analyses are found to be in good agreement with literature ab initio results. In particular discrepancies between the effective empirical Fermi resonance parameters and the theoretical normal coordinate cubic force constants are rationalised by consideration of higher order effects within the framework of the traditional perturbation theory treatment. An important feature of this work is the development of the understanding of the relationship between the local mode and normal mode models of coupled X-H stretching vibrations. In particular the simple harmonically coupled local mode model has been extended to include the effects of anharmonic interactions. Explicit relationships have been derived between this extended local mode parameter set and those of the conventional mode description for the X-H stretching vibrations of ammonia, methane, allene, ethylene and benzene type systems. The complete general harmonic force field of methyl fluoride has been recalculated using the most recent literature frequency, Coriolis and centrifugal distortion data for 12CH3F, 13CH3F, 12CD3F, 12CHD2F and 12CH2DF. The anharmonic corrections applied to the observed frequency data are considered to be more realistic than those used hitherto. There is excellent overall agreement between the fitted force constants and the highest quality ab initio force field currently available.

35. Perspective on Flipping Circuits I

Abstract

A flipped-classroom approach was implemented in a Circuits I class for electrical and computer engineering majors to lower its high attrition and failure rate. Students were asked to watch online lectures and then come to class prepared to work problems in small groups of four. The attitude, retention, and performance of students in the flipped group in Spring 2013 were compared to those for the traditionally taught group in Fall 2012. The Fall 2012 lectures were recorded, so that each group saw the same lectures. Student retention and test performance was significantly higher in the flipped course. In Fall 2012, 56% of the initially enrolled students received a C or better. In Spring 2013, this improved to 83%. The first exam scores were significantly better in Spring 2013, and this helped with student success. The authors believe that it was the alignment of online lectures, face-to-face student/teacher and peer/peer interactions, combined with the active learning component of the flipped classroom that led to these improvements.

Abstract

One of the ultimate goals of Artificial Intelligence is to assist humans in complex decision making. A promising direction for achieving this goal is Neuro-Symbolic AI, which aims to combine the interpretability of symbolic techniques with the ability of deep learning to learn from raw data. However, most current approaches require manually engineered symbolic knowledge, and where end-to-end training is considered, such approaches are either restricted to learning definite programs, or are restricted to training binary neural networks. In this paper, we introduce Neuro-Symbolic Inductive Learner (NSIL), an approach that trains a general neural network to extract latent concepts from raw data, whilst learning symbolic knowledge that maps latent concepts to target labels. The novelty of our approach is a method for biasing the learning of symbolic knowledge, based on the in-training performance of both neural and symbolic components. We evaluate NSIL on three problem domains of different complexity, including an NP-complete problem. Our results demonstrate that NSIL learns expressive knowledge, solves computationally complex problems, and achieves state-of-the-art performance in terms of accuracy and data efficiency. Abstract

The goal of inductive logic programming (ILP) is to learn a program that explains a set of examples. Until recently, most research on ILP targeted learning Prolog programs. The ILASP system instead learns answer set programs (ASP). Learning such expressive programs widens the applicability of ILP considerably; for example, enabling preference learning, learning common-sense knowledge, including defaults and exceptions, and learning non-deterministic theories. Early versions of ILASP can be considered meta-level ILP approaches, which encode a learning task as a logic program and delegate the search to an ASP solver. More recently, ILASP has shifted towards a new method, inspired by conflict-driven SAT and ASP solvers. The fundamental idea of the approach, called Conflict-driven ILP (CDILP), is to iteratively interleave the search for a hypothesis with the generation of constraints which explain why the current hypothesis does not cover a particular example. These coverage constraints allow ILASP to rule out not just the current hypothesis, but an entire class of hypotheses that do not satisfy the coverage constraint. This article formalises the CDILP approach and presents the ILASP3 and ILASP4 systems for CDILP, which are demonstrated to be more scalable than previous ILASP systems, particularly in the presence of noise.
