The Australian Bureau of Statistics shows that between 2000 and 2019 Latin American migration to Australia increased by 262%. This percentage does not consider migrants on temporary visas. This article presents a critical review of 59 single publications. The findings suggest, firstly, that while the literature shows qualitative analysis of Latin American cultural practices, communities and gender, the study of migration flows is dominated by quantitative approaches that are focused mainly on permanent settlement. Secondly, while there have been several studies attempting to understand and problematize a homogenous Latin American identity in Australia, there is still little research exploring the heterogeneous cultural, social and economic experiences of migrants from these diverse regions. Finally, this review highlights the need to conduct quantitative and qualitative studies to explore Latin American temporary migration in Australia, examining how the increase of temporary visas is intersecting with the everyday life of these migrants. In the following article I seek to investigate a hitherto forgotten but emerging aspect of Latin American critical and cultural studies, namely, the migration and diaspora of transgender youth and transvestites from the Southern Cone to the United States for artistic, creative and humanitarian purposes. I say forgotten inasmuch as the sensitivities experienced by the trans prefix were, in the beginning, discarded from the queer or sexual dissidence theories; and I point to it as emerging insofar as the new critical perspectives promoted by emerging researchers have set their sights on such bodies and subjects as true epistemes of contemporary cultural endeavor. The thesis states that transgender sensitivities are fundamental to understand the relationship between the national post-dictatorial period and the cultural productions of the 1990s. The works that artists and writers such as Germán Bobe, Iván Monalisa Ojeda and Francisco Copello carried out during those years allowed us to understand an entire Chilean and Latin American scene of young creators who fought dictatorships and canons with their bodies always accompanied by the sign of sexual dissidence

This article explores one nation-one language ideology, which holds that a language is the glue and marker of an identity that fosters national unity and linguistic assimilation ideologies in the context of Latin-American migration to the United Kingdom. From ethnographic and sociocognitive approaches within critical discourse studies, the linguistic experiences of two Latin American immigrant mothers seeking health services and legal advice are analyzed. The study of their linguistic experiences sheds light on the social and political effects that language ideologies have by bringing about such consequences as physical aggression and family separation in underexplored institutions articulated by neoliberal policies. This ethnographic study draws from my research on the three main care practices Latin American domestic workers experience in Barcelona: caring as part of their jobs, caring for their families from afar, and caring for each other. Stemming from grounded theory, I will argue that one of the main pressures they suffer daily is social isolation and loneliness. Starting from a brief analysis of how migrant domestic workers bear the burden of care individually – firstly, as part of their jobs and, secondly, as part of their gender duty when being mothers from afar – this paper will trace a third dimension of care seen in collective practices to cope with social isolation. The last section of the empirical overview will focus on the daily navigation of the concepts of self-care, activism, and feminism by Latin American domestic workers. These concepts were encountered in fieldwork by my research participants and given a new meaning when developing their own versions of them based on collective values more present in their home cultures. This essay outlines an approach to teaching U.S. immigration policy and Latino immigration to undergraduate students in a systemic and critical manner. The course is designed to build students' knowledge on the topic through four areas of knowledge encompassing the history of U.S. intervention in the Americas, the economics of migration, state regulatory practices and the legal production of immigrant criminality, and immigrant rights. A focus on social justice leads students to learn not only the social relations of inequality at the heart of Latino immigration but also about the harms inflicted on a vulnerable population. Students' comprehension of the human suffering through the study of specific cases helps them empathize and develop an understanding of the human and civil rights of migrants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this article is to study the transnational social mobility strategies, focusing on the interaction between reproductive and productive strategies, of Latin American migrant households in Spain. We have created an analysis model based on the assessment of the differentiated strategic investments of transnational families in terms of four types of resources: physical and financial; educational; social and emotional. Our intention is to trace variations in strategic behaviour in accordance with the migrants’ family generation (grandparents, parents, children,) their migratory position (pioneering or regrouped migrants, family members remaining in the country of origin, etc.) and their family situation. A longitudinal approach has been adopted, in order to analyse the changes in social and spatial mobility strategies throughout the course of the migratory process, using biographical narratives and multi-situated fieldwork carried out in Spain with Latin American immigrants (Brazilians and Ecuadorians), as well as in certain countries of origin (Ecuador). Agricultural migrant workers, recruited to work in Canada under the Temporary Foreign Workers Program (TFWP), are disciplined to be compliant and productive. Based on ethnographic data, we draw attention to several ways in which Spanish-speaking migrants, employed in agriculture in a rural community in Southwestern Ontario, respond to this disciplinary power. Most migrants discipline themselves and others to be productive and compliant workers. We refer to these acts as "performances of self-discipline." At other times, some (albeit, few) migrants challenge this disciplinary power either individually or collectively. We refer to these performances of subjectivity as "performances of defiance." Another way migrants may respond to the disciplinary power is by attempting to escape from it. Coining these performances "performances of escape," we discuss how some agricultural migrant workers drop out of the program and remain in Canada without authorization. By turning attention to these performances of subjectivity, the article fills a gap in the literature on migration management and its disciplinary practices in Canada. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper provides a qualitative exploration of the impact of family migration policies on Latin American migrants in Italy. As the data collected reveals, the right to family life is differently accessed and regulated along lines of nationality/ethnicity, gender and class, reflected in more or less rigidly constrained formal and informal reunification pathways, which differently affect gender, intergenerational and care relationships in the family. While Italy, compared to other European countries, still regulates the matter in a relatively generous way, the increasing restrictions, matched with widespread informality in labour and housing markets, make access to this fundamental human right highly uneven and stratified. In order to explain non-citizen enfranchisement in Latin America, this article takes into account three dimensions: domestic (citizenship tradition, immigration levels, internal politics), global (international and bilateral agreements, human rights discourse) and regional (common markets, diffusion, geopolitics). The article identifies two main modalities: from the early twentieth century to the 1980s, when democracy was not a necessary condition and when national factors prevailed. Starting in the 1990s, democratization in Latin America has brought a new wave of non-citizen enfranchisement, this time with more influence of global and regional factors and, in various cases, in connection with external voting rights. This study analyses the results of a research project on gay-identified men of Latin American origin who have migrated to Sydney, Australia. The findings are the product of a year of collection and analysis of data from surveys and in-depth interviews carried out with those who answered the initial call for participation at the beginning of 2010, published in the gay and lesbian press in as well as Spanish-speaking periodicals in Sydney. The theoretical bases of the project find their inspiration in the newly emergent framework of so-called sexual migration studies and the work of sexual fields theory. The conclusions show the importance of ethnic and racial images in Latin American migrant interaction in gay spaces and the value that the study’s participants gave to multiculturalism in their experiences of new socio-sexual sites and identity constructions post-migration. Spain is undergoing a process of intense demographic change towards a more diverse society brought about by massive immigration over the last decade that includes a high proportion of Latin Americans. Pejoratively dubbed ‘sudacas’, they are moving in the opposite direction to the Spanish who went to Latin America 100 years ago. Multicultural Spain has two main facets: the historical regional minorities in Catalonia, Galicia and the Basque Country, elements of which have waged struggles for national autonomy; and the recent immigrant minorities, notably the Latin Americans, North Africans and Romanians. Hometown associations (HTAs) in the United States are migrant, voluntary groups with a shared sense of belonging to a region in a different country of origin. Their philanthropic activities across borders have increasingly attracted the attention of government agencies and social and political actors. These actors have endeavored to form more HTAs and place greater demands on them to expand their civic engagement. This strategy, however, will not necessarily lead to that purpose, but instead will likely exacerbate a critical gap in the HTAs' organizational capacity. This paper argues that a different strategy is best suited to strengthen the organizational ability of HTAs, and proposes a framework to achieve this goal based on a capacity building pilot program for Latino HTAs from the Los Angeles region. Scholars have questioned whether international migrants from Latin America are able to transfer their levels of education into the U.S. labor market. In this article, the author examines the data from the Latin American Migration Project for Guatemala, Mexico, Costa Rica, and Nicaragua to observe the ability of each of the immigrant groups to convert prior education into occupational attainments within the U.S. labor market. Results show intercountry differences in the ability of the immigrants to translate educational attainments into occupational outcomes. Nicaraguans are by far the most educated and are much better able to translate home country schooling into highly skilled U.S. occupations. However, findings reveal that Nicaraguans have received more of an occupational benefit from having legal documents. The author argues that in addition to divergent patterns of educational selectivity, the contrasting treatment of Nicaraguans and Mexicans by U.S. immigration law seems to be responsible, at least in part, for their very different positions in the U.S. labor market.
