Civil society has played an important role in meeting the challenges of refugee migration in recent years. This commentary documents the importance of civic engagement for the integration of refugees by linking individual survey data on refugees to a regional measure of civic engagement in Germany. Using the density of newly established civic associations at the county level as a measure of civic engagement, we exploit regional differences in civic engagement in order to estimate its association with refugee integration outcomes. We find that in regions with particularly high levels of civic engagement, refugees have significantly more frequent contact to Germans, higher life satisfaction, and better German language skills. This correlation is robust to regional contextual factors such as the local population structure, economic strength, and the state of the labor market. In terms of language acquisition, women and refugees with a low level of education benefit the most from high civic engagement. Moreover, refugees with university degrees find significantly better-paying jobs in areas with higher civic engagement. However, no direct correlation could be established between civic engagement and the likelihood that refugees are employed. Nonetheless, the results suggest that support from civil society translates into improved access to government benefits. Our findings highlight that local civic engagement is an important complement to public assistance services and policy makers should give a high priority to partnering with the civil society to improve refugees’ integration outcomes.

While post‐synthesis processing steps are frequently applied in the preparation of cathode composites for solid‐state batteries to ensure homogeneous mixing and good contact with the cathode active material, little is known about the processes that occur during milling and how they influence structure and transport of solid electrolytes. Here, an extensive set of experimental methods and simulations are used to study the effects of post‐synthesis milling by a frequency and planetary ball mill on the highly conducting chloride‐rich argyrodite Li5.5PS4.5Cl1.5. Structural analyses show that processing can reduce the coherence length and increase the disorder. The reduced crystallite size correlates with a decrease in ionic conductivity in the post‐processed solid electrolytes. Simulating the ball milling processes by the discrete element method provides fundamental understanding and reveals the correlation of the loss in coherence with the specific energy input and the numbers of stressing events during the milling process. An observed decrease in particle size in ball milled samples leads to lower tortuosity in the cathode composites. As the loss in coherence and decrease in particle size have opposite effects on the performance, optimizing these processing conditions will play a significant role on the road to highly performing solid‐state batteries. African swine fever is a transmissible virus impacting wild and domestic swine populations. In Europe, it is non-native and the recently introduced genotype affects wild boar populations with occasional outbreaks in domestic pigs. The ability to predict short-term spatial dynamics of this disease will greatly improve our ability to control and limit future spread of the virus. The BioDT disease outbreaks prototype, currently in development, implements an individual-based landscape-level mechanistic model as a digital twin aimed at providing informed support for management decisions in response to the spread of African swine fever in European wild boar populations. Bone is a metabolically dynamic structure that is generally remodeled throughout the lifetime of an individual but often causes problems with increasing age. A key player for bone development and homeostasis, but also under pathological conditions, is the bone vasculature. This complex system of arteries, veins, and capillaries forms distinct structures where each subset of endothelial cells has important functions. Starting with the basic process of angiogenesis and bone-specific blood vessel formation, coupled with initial bone formation, the importance of different vascular structures is highlighted with respect to how these structures are maintained or changed during homeostasis, aging, and pathological conditions. After exemplifying the current knowledge on bone vasculature, this review will move on to exosomes, a novel hotspot of scientific research. Exosomes will be introduced starting from their discovery via current isolation procedures and state-of-the-art characterization to their role in bone vascular development, homeostasis, and bone regeneration and repair while summarizing the underlying signal transduction pathways. With respect to their role in these processes, especially mesenchymal stem cell-derived extracellular vesicles are of interest, which leads to a discussion on patented applications and an update on ongoing clinical trials. Taken together, this review provides an overview of bone vasculature and bone regeneration, with a major focus on how exosomes influence this intricate system, as they might be useful for therapeutic purposes in the near future. Background: The cattle sector is the most important economic production unit of the Irish farming and agri-food sector. Despite its relevance, there has been limited quantitative information about the structure of differing cattle production types and of the connections between them. This paper addresses this gap by providing, for the first time, an overview of the Irish cattle population structured by enterprise type. Methods & Results: We collected data from the cattle register for the period 2015 to 2019 and assigned registered herds to one of 18 different herd types using a recently published herd type classification approach. This allows, for the first time, to exploring changes in enterprise types and subtypes over time, and describing the movements between these subtypes and from these subtypes to slaughter. Conclusions: The overview and associated classification presented in this study will form the basis for a number of future comparative studies, including cross-sectoral assessments of profitability, estimation of the extent of animal health losses on Irish cattle farms or structural analysis of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions across production systems. A growing significance of flexible steam turbine operation challenges the control of turbines, as part load operation using control valves can be accompanied by highly unsteady flow conditions. The increased dynamic load induced by pressure forces can reduce the reliable operating range, weaken the valve, and lead to mechanical failures. The geometry of the valve plays a major role in the reduction of dynamic forces. Using a scaled control valve, experiments were conducted with a focus on the dynamic behavior of the valve head. A spherical valve shape favoring unstable operation was used as a reference case, and the desired instability was proven by measurements. Different modified valve geometries based on literature featuring separation edges were then tested against the spherical shape. Results indicate the improved stability of the modified geometries over the reference geometry. For most of the operating range, vibrations were drastically reduced, and the overall flow stabilized. BACKGROUND: Electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) continue to be popular among young adults. These devices are often advertised as a healthy alternative to quitting tobacco cigarettes. However, young adults represent a population who view it as a novel behavior that provides a sense of popularity, social acceptance, and desired physiologic properties. The objective of this study was to examine characteristics of vaping behavior among college students and explore possible associations between groups of vaping behavior (stopped, initiated, increased, decreased, stayed the same). METHODS: In a multi-center cross-sectional study, 656 students from University of Tampa in the United States and University of Applied Sciences in Germany (IST) were recruited to answer a 31-item online questionnaire. A chi-square test was used to evaluate associations between the groups. RESULTS: Prevalence rates indicated approximately 31% of all students were currently using ENDS. Even though more negative than positive experiences with ENDS were reported, most students stated their vaping increased during COVID-19 lockdowns. Addiction and stress relief emerged to be predictors (P < .001) of an increase in vaping, whereas social motives were not statistically significant. Living situation (P 5 .63) and depression (P 5 .10) were not significantly associated with vaping behavior. CONCLUSIONS: ENDS products continue to yield very high levels of nicotine creating addiction in young adults. Addiction counseling and evidenced-based practices should be employed at every level (individual, community, and school). Additionally, mental health counseling for students in pandemic and high-stress environments may help to combat stress in a more proactive manner than self-medicating. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
