Abstract

Session 698: Just Add Water and Mix: Heritage and climate change - challenges and novel approaches; International audience; Marine erosion and intense anthropogenic pressure on the coastal strip combine their effects to permanently damage the tenuous remains left by prehistoric human groups. In the absence of the "destroyer - payer" link that has allowed the development-led archaeology in France since the 1990s, the preservation of this "diffuse" heritage on the coasts is often the sole responsibility of amateur archaeologists. Specific monitoring programmes, such as ALERT (director: M. -Y. Daire), also amplify these collaborative works. Discovered by D. Roué and J.-C. Le Goff, then explorated as part of the Alert project under the responsibility of two of us (GM and POB) in 2015-2016, the Roc'h Santec Leton rock shelter (Santec, Morbihan, France) benefited from these heritage and scientific practices.The rocky island of Roc'h Santec Leton is almost two kilometres from the mainland; The access on foot is only possible a few days a year or by boat. The excavation revealed a very rare stratigraphic sequence in the region : three levels of Middle Palaeolithic, a very damaged Azilian layer and a single layer with diverse dwellings of the Holocene (Early and Late second Mesolithic, Early Neolithic and Iron Age). These multiple cultural components underline the interest of human populations in this rock shelter, now isolated on a tiny island in the middle of the sea.This archaeological operation, which was carried out under difficult logistical and climatic conditions, allowed us to test and validate the principles of intervention, which we believe to have a strong heuristic interest.

Abstract

Session II-1. Chasseurs-cueilleurs et agriculteurs face aux changements climatiques : adaptation et Développement durable; International audience; This paper proposes a general review of Palaeolithic sites on the Armorican peninsula with a focus on their palaeoenvironmental context. These early settlements of Western France occurred during Pleistocene climate changes; therefore they will be presented within their chronostratigraphical and environmental time frame. Indeed the pre-Neanderthal and Neanderthal populations that occupied the region were present in both interglacial contexts and the cooler interstadials of glacial phases. From the Lower Palaeolithic until the Last Glacial Maximum of the Upper Palaeolithic people came to settle at different times adapting themselves to the climatic constraints of their period. Consequently numerous occupations took place at the end of interglacial stages, during rather mild conditions. This is the case for several important sites, for example Menez‑Dregan (Plouhinec, Finistère) and Piégu (Pléneuf-Val-André, Côtes-d'Armor). Contrastingly other occupations happened under periglacial contexts but during these cooler interstadials as seen at the settlements of Les Vallées-Nantois (Pléneuf-Val-André), Grainfollet and Les Gastines, and for the site of Le Mont-Dol (Ille-et-Vilaine). This work explores how these populations adapted to climatic constraints questioning whether their lithic industries contain technological adaptations to environmental change and what this can tell us in combination with the palaeogeographical data.

Abstract

The development of the Azilian in Western Europe 14,000 years ago is considered a “revolution” in Upper Paleolithic Archaeology. One of the main elements of this rapid social restructuring is the abandonment of naturalistic figurative art on portable pieces or on cave walls in the Magdalenian in favor of abstract expression on small pebbles. Recent work shows that the transformation of human societies between the Magdalenian and the Azilian was more gradual. The discovery of a new Early Azilian site with decorated stones in France supports this hypothesis. While major changes in stone tool technology between the Magdalenian and Azilian clearly mark important adaptive changes, the discovery of 45 engraved schist tablets from archaeological layers at Le Rocher de l’Impératrice attests to iconographic continuity together with special valorization of aurochs as shown by a “shining” bull depiction. This evidence suggests that some cultural features such as iconography may lag far behind technological changes. We also argue that eventual change in symbolic expression, which includes the later disappearance of figurative art, provides new insight into the probable restructuring of the societies.
