Cultic and other honors offered to rulers by their subjects unambiguously express loyalty to the rulers. Based on data collected for the Seleukid and Ptolemaic empires, a comparison is offered emphasizing the particular qualities of the Seleukid record. The comparison considers geographic distribution, where the honors fell on a public to private spectrum, the occupations and ethnicities of the subjects who offered honors individually, the intensity of these practices, and changes in the patterns over time. We know in advance that honors for the rulers are weakly attested for the Seleukid east, and even in Koile Syria and Phoinike. Should this reticence be interpreted as a possible indication of tepid support for Seleukid rule in these regions? Alternative explanations or contributing factors include preexisting cultural habits, different royal policies, destruction of evidence by wars and natural disasters, and the unevenness of archaeological exploration. New hoard evidence and a die study allow for the reassessment of a single mint that extensively produced imitative Ptolemaic tetradrachms. Besides the long-known imitations of dated tetradrachms of 'Akko-Ptolemais from the reign of Ptolemy II, it also minted less familiar imitations, mainly of selected Alexandrian portrait tetradrachms of Ptolemy I. This imitative mint apparently began its activity during the Fourth or Fifth Syrian War and continued in the first decades of the second century BCE, perhaps c. 170-169. During the co-regency of Ptolemy VI and VIII, dated silver coinage was struck principally at Salamis, Citium and Paphos but also at Amathus and an uncertain mint or mints. We present a new die study of the coinage of the three main mints, which was less sporadic than previous studies indicated. The results have implications for the contemporaneous minting operations at Alexandria. This article presents the study of a group of Ptolemaic tetradrachms struck from a single obverse die that was first used at Sidon in regnal year 23 of Ptolemy III, and after two varieties were produced there, was transferred to 'Akko-Ptolemais where it was used for at least another seven varieties continuing into the reign of Ptolemy IV. The obverse die was recut several times over its unusually long career, and at Ptolemais was paired with reverse dies that were also recut, and which display an exceptional alternating pattern of controls.
