Abstract The dense mechanoreceptors in human fingertips enable texture discrimination. Recent advances in flexible electronics have created tactile sensors that effectively replicate slowly adapting (SA) and rapidly adapting (RA) mechanoreceptors. However, the influence of dermatoglyphic structures on tactile signal transmission, such as the effect of fingerprint ridge filtering on friction‐induced vibration frequencies, remains unexplored. A novel multi‐layer flexible sensor with an artificially synthesized skin surface capable of replicating arbitrary fingerprints is developed. This sensor simultaneously detects pressure (SA response) and vibration (RA response), enabling texture recognition. Fingerprint ridge patterns from notable historical figures – Rosa Parks, Richard Nixon, Martin Luther King Jr., and Ronald Reagan – are fabricated on the sensor surface. Vibration frequency responses to assorted fabric textures are measured and compared between fingerprint replicas. Results demonstrate that fingerprint topography substantially impacts skin‐surface vibrational transmission. Specifically, Parks' fingerprint structure conveyed higher frequencies more clearly than those of Nixon, King, or Reagan. This work suggests individual fingerprint ridge morphological variation influences tactile perception and can confer adaptive advantages for fine texture discrimination. The flexible bioinspired sensor provides new insights into human vibrotactile processing by modeling fingerprint‐filtered mechanical signals at the finger‐object interface.

Abstract Huntington’s disease (HD) is a dominant neurological disorder caused by an expanded HTT exon 1 CAG repeat that lengthens huntingtin’s polyglutamine tract. Lowering mutant huntingtin has been proposed for treating HD, but genetic modifiers implicate somatic CAG repeat expansion as the driver of onset. We find that branaplam and risdiplam, small molecule splice modulators that lower huntingtin by promoting HTT pseudoexon inclusion, also decrease expansion of an unstable HTT exon 1 CAG repeat in an engineered cell model. Targeted CRISPR-Cas9 editing shows this effect is not due to huntingtin lowering, pointing instead to pseudoexon inclusion in PMS1. Homozygous but not heterozygous inactivation of PMS1 also reduces CAG repeat expansion, supporting PMS1 as a genetic modifier of HD and a potential target for therapeutic intervention. Although splice modulation provides one strategy, genome-wide transcriptomics also emphasize consideration of cell-type specific effects and polymorphic variation at both target and off-target sites.

Introduction: Percutaneous deep venous arterialisation (DVA) is emerging as a promising alternative for limb salvage in chronic limb threatening ischaemia (CLTI) patients without any reasonable anatomical option for conventional revascularisation techniques. However, its mechanism of action remains incompletely understood. This report aimed to find some of the histological alterations occurring in the limb following DVA. Report: This short report presents the case of a 53 year old female who underwent DVA for Rutherford 5 CLTI. Although the intervention was successful and showed evidence of improved blood flow to the foot, the post-operative course was notable due to worsening infection leading to a below knee amputation four weeks later. The blood vessels were harvested for histological analysis, which found features of venous arterialisation such as smooth muscle cell proliferation and neointimal hyperplasia, even in the paired posterior tibial vein that did not undergo DVA. Discussion: This case demonstrated unexpected histological changes occurring in the paired posterior tibial vein that did not undergo DVA. This warrants further investigations to fully understand the mechanisms at play in DVA and to explore the role of the paired vein in sustaining arterialised flow to the foot.

Abstract Motion recognition (MR)‐based somatosensory interaction technology, which interprets user movements as input instructions, presents a natural approach for promoting human‐computer interaction, a critical element for advancing metaverse applications. Herein, this work introduces a non‐intrusive muscle‐sensing wearable device, that in conjunction with machine learning, enables motion‐control‐based somatosensory interaction with metaverse avatars. To facilitate MR, the proposed device simultaneously detects muscle mechanical activities, including dynamic muscle shape changes and vibrational mechanomyogram signals, utilizing a flexible 16‐channel pressure sensor array (weighing ≈0.38 g). Leveraging the rich information from multiple channels, a recognition accuracy of ≈96.06% is achieved by classifying ten lower‐limb motions executed by ten human subjects. In addition, this work demonstrates the practical application of muscle‐sensing‐based somatosensory interaction, using the proposed wearable device, for enabling the real‐time control of avatars in a virtual space. This study provides an alternative approach to traditional rigid inertial measurement units and electromyography‐based methods for achieving accurate human motion capture, which can further broaden the applications of motion‐interactive wearable devices for the coming metaverse age.

In the Great Lakes Region, Sharp-tailed Grouse ( Tympanuchus phasianellus ) use open habitats of grass and brush that require frequent management. Wildlife managers expressed concern that Sharp-tailed Grouse were not responding to management throughout the year, so we examined responses to prescribed fire and mechanical treatment (mowing or shearing) conducted during the fall. We surveyed Sharp-tailed Grouse use and vegetation at 15 mechanical treatments, 10 prescribed burns, and 25 control sites in a before-after-control-impact-paired design. We surveyed Sharp-tailed Grouse use before management, and one week, one month, one year, and three years after management by conducting fecal pellet surveys along transects at each site. Sharp-tailed Grouse responses, as indicated by differences between fecal pellet counts at treatments and paired controls during each survey, increased following prescribed fire, but did not change after mechanical treatments. However, increased Sharp-tailed Grouse use following prescribed fire was temporary, thus management should be conducted at least once every three years at each site. Changes in vegetation metrics at managed sites were also temporary and most metrics returned to pre-treatment levels after one year, although shrub height at sites that received mechanical treatments and the forb response following prescribed fire persisted for > 3 years. We suggest that fall prescribed fire is more effective at increasing Sharp-tailed Grouse use of sites than fall mechanical treatment, which could be due to differences in vegetation responses, site size, landscape context, or cues produced by fire that attract Sharp-tailed Grouse. However, mechanical treatments maintain Sharp-tailed Grouse habitat, and without management, unchecked woody encroachment reduces habitat. Targeting mowing and shearing at sites known to be used by Sharp-tailed Grouse may prioritize management activities to sites that will have the most impact. Prescribed fire and mechanical treatments produced different Sharp-tailed Grouse and vegetation responses in the fall and should be used to address different management objectives.

In a companion paper, we present the first spatially resolved polarized image of Sagittarius A* on event horizon scales, captured using the Event Horizon Telescope, a global very long baseline interferometric array operating at a wavelength of 1.3 mm. Here we interpret this image using both simple analytic models and numerical general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) simulations. The large spatially resolved linear polarization fraction (24%–28%, peaking at ∼40%) is the most stringent constraint on parameter space, disfavoring models that are too Faraday depolarized. Similar to our studies of M87*, polarimetric constraints reinforce a preference for GRMHD models with dynamically important magnetic fields. Although the spiral morphology of the polarization pattern is known to constrain the spin and inclination angle, the time-variable rotation measure (RM) of Sgr A* (equivalent to ≈46° ± 12° rotation at 228 GHz) limits its present utility as a constraint. If we attribute the RM to internal Faraday rotation, then the motion of accreting material is inferred to be counterclockwise, contrary to inferences based on historical polarized flares, and no model satisfies all polarimetric and total intensity constraints. On the other hand, if we attribute the mean RM to an external Faraday screen, then the motion of accreting material is inferred to be clockwise, and one model passes all applied total intensity and polarimetric constraints: a model with strong magnetic fields, a spin parameter of 0.94, and an inclination of 150°. We discuss how future 345 GHz and dynamical imaging will mitigate our present uncertainties and provide additional constraints on the black hole and its accretion flow.

The Event Horizon Telescope observed the horizon-scale synchrotron emission region around the Galactic center supermassive black hole, Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), in 2017. These observations revealed a bright, thick ring morphology with a diameter of 51.8 ± 2.3 μ as and modest azimuthal brightness asymmetry, consistent with the expected appearance of a black hole with mass M ≈ 4 × 10 ^6 M _⊙ . From these observations, we present the first resolved linear and circular polarimetric images of Sgr A*. The linear polarization images demonstrate that the emission ring is highly polarized, exhibiting a prominent spiral electric vector polarization angle pattern with a peak fractional polarization of ∼40% in the western portion of the ring. The circular polarization images feature a modestly (∼5%–10%) polarized dipole structure along the emission ring, with negative circular polarization in the western region and positive circular polarization in the eastern region, although our methods exhibit stronger disagreement than for linear polarization. We analyze the data using multiple independent imaging and modeling methods, each of which is validated using a standardized suite of synthetic data sets. While the detailed spatial distribution of the linear polarization along the ring remains uncertain owing to the intrinsic variability of the source, the spiraling polarization structure is robust to methodological choices. The degree and orientation of the linear polarization provide stringent constraints for the black hole and its surrounding magnetic fields, which we discuss in an accompanying publication.

Abstract The terahertz frequency range is gaining popularity in security, stealth technology, and the future 6G network communication. For the control of severe terahertz electromagnetic interference (EMI) pollution, frequency‐selective stealth‐capable shielding materials are being explored to mask terahertz signals. For the realization of masking terahertz signals, the robustness, lightweight, and shape‐conformable materials with excellent terahertz EMI shielding/absorption are crucial. Here, the study reports the fabrication of 3D symmetric pyramidal architectural MXene composite films with frequency‐selective stealth performance characteristics via the facile drop casting method. With the high absorption capability of 2D MXene layers, the MXene composite films exhibit substantial terahertz stealth performance. 3D pyramidal microstructure design leads to frequency selective surface‐assisted reflection resonance in the frequency range of 0.6–1.1 THz. The MXene composite film demonstrates an outstanding maximum terahertz shielding effectiveness (SE) of up to 70.4 dB and a specific SE of 0.55 dB µm−1. These terahertz SE values exceed all of those for MX‐based shielding material designs reported in the literature. The investigation will open a new direction toward developing terahertz EMI shielding thin films with easy integration into any surface for stealth capabilities.

With the growing prevalence and mortality of peripheral arterial disease, preoperative assessment, risk stratification, and determining the correct indication for endovascular and open surgical procedures are essential for therapeutic decision-making. The effectiveness of interventional procedures is significantly influenced by the plaque composition and calcification pattern. Therefore, the identification of patients for whom endovascular treatment is the most appropriate therapeutic solution often remains a challenge. The most commonly used imaging techniques have their own limitations and do not provide findings detailed enough for specific, personalized treatment planning. Using state-of-the-art noninvasive and invasive imaging modalities, it is now possible to obtain a view, not only of the complex vascular anatomy and plaque burden of the lower extremity arterial system, but also of complex plaque structures and various pathologic calcium distribution patterns. In the future, as these latest advancements in diagnostic methods become more widespread, we will be able to obtain more accurate views of the plaque structure and anatomic complexity to guide optimal treatment planning and device selection. We reviewed the implications of the most recent invasive and noninvasive lower extremity imaging techniques and future directions.

Thermoelectric‐based waste heat recovery requires efficient materials to replace conventional non‐eco‐friendly Te‐ and Pb‐based commercial devices. Ternary copper chalcogenide‐based famatinite (Cu3SbS4) compound is one of the practical substitutes for traditional thermoelectric materials. However, the pristine Cu3SbS4 inherits poor structural complexion, large thermal conductivity, and low power conversion efficiency. To develop high‐efficiency Cu3SbS4, InSb nanoinclusions are incorporated via high‐energy ball milling followed by the hot‐press densification method. Incorporating InSb nanoinclusions to lower thermal conductivity via phonon scattering while increasing the thermopower via a carrier energy filtering process. The thermoelectric performance (ZT) of ≈0.4 at 623 K is obtained in Cu3SbS4‐3 mol% InSb nanocomposite, which is ≈140% higher than pure Cu3SbS4. Both mechanical and thermal stability are improved by grain boundary hardening and dispersion strengthening. Thus, a facile nanostructured Cu3SbS4 with added InSb nanoinclusions is delivered as a highly efficient, eco‐friendly, structurally‐, thermally‐, and mechanically‐stable material for next‐generation thermoelectric generators.

Abstract For decades, the widespread application of thermoelectric generators has been plagued by two major limitations: heat stagnation in its legs, which limits power conversion efficiency, and inherent brittleness of its constituents, which accelerates thermoelectric generator failure. While notable progress has been made to overcome these quintessential flaws, the state-of-the-art suffers from an apparent mismatch between thermoelectric performance and mechanical toughness. Here, we demonstrate an approach to potentially enhance the power conversion efficiency while suppressing the brittle failure in thermoelectric materials. By harnessing the enhanced thermal impedance induced by the cellular architecture of microlattices with the exceptional strength and ductility (>50% compressive strain) derived from partial carbonization, we fabricate three-dimensional (3D) architected thermoelectric generators that exhibit a specific energy absorption of ~30 J g−1 and power conversion efficiency of ~10%. We hope our work will improve future thermoelectric generator fabrication design through additive manufacturing with excellent thermoelectric properties and mechanical robustness.

Abstract Neuromorphic artificial intelligence systems are the future of ultrahigh performance computing clusters to overcome complex scientific and economical challenges. Despite their importance, the advancement in quantum neuromorphic systems is slow without specific device design. To elucidate biomimicking mammalian brain synapses, a new class of quantum topological neuristors (QTN) with ultralow energy consumption (pJ) and higher switching speed (µs) is introduced. Bioinspired neural network characteristics of QTNs are the effects of edge state transport and tunable energy gap in the quantum topological insulator (QTI) materials. With augmented device and QTI material design, top notch neuromorphic behavior with effective learning‐relearning‐forgetting stages is demonstrated. Critically, to emulate the real‐time neuromorphic efficiency, training of the QTNs is demonstrated with simple hand gesture game by interfacing them with artificial neural networks to perform decision‐making operations. Strategically, the QTNs prove the possession of incomparable potential to realize next‐gen neuromorphic computing for the development of intelligent machines and humanoids.

Abstract In the quest to reduce energy consumption, there is a growing demand for technology beyond silicon as electronic materials for neuromorphic artificial intelligence devices. Equipped with the criteria of energy efficiency and excellent adaptability, organohalide perovskites can emulate the characteristics of synaptic functions in the human brain. In this aspect, this study designs and develops CsFAPbI3‐based memristive neuromorphic devices that can switch at low power and show larger endurance by adopting the powder engineering methodology. The neuromorphic characteristics of the CsFAPbI3‐based devices exhibit an ultra‐high paired‐pulse facilitation index for an applied electric stimuli pulse. Moreover, the transition from short‐term to long‐term memory requires ultra‐low energy with long relaxation times. The learning and training cycles illustrate that the CsFAPbI3‐based devices exhibit faster learning and memorization process owing to their larger carrier lifetime compared to other perovskites. The results provide a pathway to attain low‐power neuromorphic devices that are synchronic to the human brain's performance.

Objective: We evaluated how contemporary data on infrapopliteal vessel preparation have been reported to identify knowledge gaps and opportunities for future research. Methods: A literature search was performed on Web of Science, PubMed, and Google Scholar to identify clinical research studies reporting on the outcomes of vessel preparation in below-the-knee lesions between 2006 and 2021. Studies were excluded if they were case reports or case series with a sample size of

Mangrove forests play an important role in the balance of biodiversity. However, they are threatened by agriculture, aquaculture, urbanization and global warming. That’s why it is imperative to monitor this ecosystem and understand how it evolves in the face of these threats in order to better preserve it. The traditional methods are invasive and time consuming. Besides, it is often difficult to get into mangroves because of the particular structure of some species, so measurements cannot be taken in those areas. That’s why it is very interesting to use aerial data provided by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) photos or airborne laser scanning systems (ALS). Moreover, some representative elements of mangroves are only a few tens of centimeters high. This is the case of pneumatophores. Traditional measurements would be much too long. In this case, it is interesting to use terrestrial laser scanning systems (TLS) to make measurements and to follow them. A research project began in 2021 to try to understand how urban mangroves develop in semi-arid regions, using remote sensing techniques (photogrammetry, airborne and terrestrial laser scanning). The purpose of this paper is first to present the project and the issues of monitoring mangrove forests. Then, it proposes a state of the art of the methodologies used to record mangrove. Finally, it presents the different acquisitions made as well as the first results of species classification based on photogrammetric point cloud processing. The assessment based on ground truth shows already promising results.

The first very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) detections at 870 μ m wavelength (345 GHz frequency) are reported, achieving the highest diffraction-limited angular resolution yet obtained from the surface of the Earth and the highest-frequency example of the VLBI technique to date. These include strong detections for multiple sources observed on intercontinental baselines between telescopes in Chile, Hawaii, and Spain, obtained during observations in 2018 October. The longest-baseline detections approach 11 G λ , corresponding to an angular resolution, or fringe spacing, of 19 μ as. The Allan deviation of the visibility phase at 870 μ m is comparable to that at 1.3 mm on the relevant integration timescales between 2 and 100 s. The detections confirm that the sensitivity and signal chain stability of stations in the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) array are suitable for VLBI observations at 870 μ m. Operation at this short wavelength, combined with anticipated enhancements of the EHT, will lead to a unique high angular resolution instrument for black hole studies, capable of resolving the event horizons of supermassive black holes in both space and time.

Porphyrin‐based metal–organic frameworks (PP‐MOFs) have some special features beyond ordinary MOFs, including superior optoelectronic characteristics, the ability to form 2D layered structure, and customizability, which prompt the increasing attention of PP‐MOFs in the field of neuromorphic electronics. The related application research is in the initial stage, and a timely summary and guidance are necessary. The PP‐MOFs fabrication should be shifted from powder synthesis in a chemistry laboratory to high‐quality film preparation under a clean environment to ensure device performance. This article highlights the PP‐MOFs film preparation methods and the application advances in neuromorphic electronics, performs comparative analysis in detail, and puts forward the challenges and future research directions, with the aim to attract the attention of experts in various areas (e.g., chemists, materials scientists, and engineers) and promote the application of PP‐MOFs in neuromorphic electronics.

Abstract In vivo, multiple biophysical cues provided by highly ordered connective tissues of the extracellular matrix regulate skeletal muscle cells to align in parallel with one another. However, in routine in vitro cell culture environments, these key factors are often missing, which leads to changes in cell behavior. Here, we present a simple strategy for using optical media discs with nanogrooves and other polymer-based substrates nanomolded from the discs to directly culture muscle cells to study their response to the effect of biophysical cues such as nanotopography and substrate stiffness. We extend the range of study of biophysical cues for myoblasts by showing that they can sense ripple sizes as small as a 100 nm width and a 20 nm depth for myotube alignment, which has not been reported previously. The results revealed that nanotopography and substrate stiffness regulated myoblast proliferation and morphology independently, with nanotopographical cues showing a higher effect. These biophysical cues also worked synergistically, and their individual effects on cells were additive; i.e., by comparing cells grown on different polymer-based substrates (with and without nanogrooves), the cell proliferation rate could be reduced by as much as ~29%, and the elongation rate could be increased as much as ~116%. Moreover, during myogenesis, muscle cells actively responded to nanotopography and consistently showed increases in fusion and maturation indices of ~28% and ~21%, respectively. Finally, under electrical stimulation, the contraction amplitude of well-aligned myotubes was found to be almost 3 times greater than that for the cells on a smooth surface, regardless of the substrate stiffness.

The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) is a millimeter very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) array that has imaged the apparent shadows of the supermassive black holes M87* and Sagittarius A*. Polarimetric data from these observations contain a wealth of information on the black hole and accretion flow properties. In this work, we develop polarimetric geometric modeling methods for mm-VLBI data, focusing on approaches that fit data products with differing degrees of invariance to broad classes of calibration errors. We establish a fitting procedure using a polarimetric “m-ring” model to approximate the image structure near a black hole. By fitting this model to synthetic EHT data from general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic models, we show that the linear and circular polarization structure can be successfully approximated with relatively few model parameters. We then fit this model to EHT observations of M87* taken in 2017. In total intensity and linear polarization, the m-ring fits are consistent with previous results from imaging methods. In circular polarization, the m-ring fits indicate the presence of event-horizon-scale circular polarization structure, with a persistent dipolar asymmetry and orientation across several days. The same structure was recovered independently of observing band, used data products, and model assumptions. Despite this broad agreement, imaging methods do not produce similarly consistent results. Our circular polarization results, which imposed additional assumptions on the source structure, should thus be interpreted with some caution. Polarimetric geometric modeling provides a useful and powerful method to constrain the properties of horizon-scale polarized emission, particularly for sparse arrays like the EHT.

Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) observations have revealed a bright ring of emission around the supermassive black hole at the center of the M87 galaxy. EHT images in linear polarization have further identified a coherent spiral pattern around the black hole, produced from ordered magnetic fields threading the emitting plasma. Here we present the first analysis of circular polarization using EHT data, acquired in 2017, which can potentially provide additional insights into the magnetic fields and plasma composition near the black hole. Interferometric closure quantities provide convincing evidence for the presence of circularly polarized emission on event-horizon scales. We produce images of the circular polarization using both traditional and newly developed methods. All methods find a moderate level of resolved circular polarization across the image (〈∣ v ∣〉 < 3.7%), consistent with the low image-integrated circular polarization fraction measured by the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (∣ v _int ∣ < 1%). Despite this broad agreement, the methods show substantial variation in the morphology of the circularly polarized emission, indicating that our conclusions are strongly dependent on the imaging assumptions because of the limited baseline coverage, uncertain telescope gain calibration, and weakly polarized signal. We include this upper limit in an updated comparison to general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulation models. This analysis reinforces the previously reported preference for magnetically arrested accretion flow models. We find that most simulations naturally produce a low level of circular polarization consistent with our upper limit and that Faraday conversion is likely the dominant production mechanism for circular polarization at 230 GHz in M87*.

The ubiquitously expressed transcription factor TFII-I is a multifunctional protein with pleiotropic roles in gene regulation. TFII-I associated polymorphisms are implicated in Sjögren’s syndrome and Lupus in humans and, germline deletion of the Gtf2i gene in mice leads to embryonic lethality. Here we report a unique role for TFII-I in homeostasis of innate properties of B lymphocytes. Loss of Gtf2i in murine B lineage cells leads to an alteration in transcriptome, chromatin landscape and associated transcription factor binding sites, which exhibits myeloid-like features and coincides with enhanced sensitivity to LPS induced gene expression. TFII-I deficient B cells also show increased switching to IgG3, a phenotype associated with inflammation. These results demonstrate a role for TFII-I in maintaining immune homeostasis and provide clues for GTF2I polymorphisms associated with B cell dominated autoimmune diseases in humans.

Photocatalytic synthesis of hydrogen peroxide under mild reaction conditions is a promising technology. This article will review the recent research progress in the design of photocatalytic H2O2 synthesis systems. A comprehensive discussion of the strategies that could solve two essential issues related to H2O2 synthesis. That is, how to improve the reaction kinetics of H2O2 formation via 2e− oxygen reduction reaction and inhibit the H2O2 decomposition through a variety of surface functionalization methods. The photocatalyst design and the reaction mechanism will be especially stressed in this work which will be concluded with an outlook to show the possible ways for synthesizing high-concentration H2O2 solution in the future.

Abstract Wearing masks has been a recommended protective measure due to the risks of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) even in its coming endemic phase. Therefore, deploying a “smart mask” to monitor human physiological signals is highly beneficial for personal and public health. This work presents a smart mask integrating an ultrathin nanocomposite sponge structure‐based soundwave sensor (≈400 µm), which allows the high sensitivity in a wide‐bandwidth dynamic pressure range, i.e., capable of detecting various respiratory sounds of breathing, speaking, and coughing. Thirty‐one subjects test the smart mask in recording their respiratory activities. Machine/deep learning methods, i.e., support vector machine and convolutional neural networks, are used to recognize these activities, which show average macro‐recalls of ≈95% in both individual and generalized models. With rich high‐frequency (≈4000 Hz) information recorded, the two‐/tri‐phase coughs can be mapped while speaking words can be identified, demonstrating that the smart mask can be applicable as a daily wearable Internet of Things (IoT) device for respiratory disease identification, voice interaction tool, etc. in the future. This work bridges the technological gap between ultra‐lightweight but high‐frequency response sensor material fabrication, signal transduction and processing, and machining/deep learning to demonstrate a wearable device for potential applications in continual health monitoring in daily life.

Metal chalcogenides are primarily used for thermoelectric applications due to their enormous potential to convert waste heat into valuable energy. Several studies focused on single or dual aliovalent doping techniques to enhance thermoelectric properties in semiconductor materials; however, these dopants enhance one property while deteriorating others due to the interdependency of these properties or may render the host material toxic. Therefore, a strategic doping approach is vital to harness the full potential of doping to improve the efficiency of thermoelectric generation while restoring the base material eco-friendly. Here, we report a well-designed counter-doped eco-friendly nanomaterial system (~70 nm) using both isovalent (cerium) and aliovalent (cobalt) in a Bi2Se3 system for enhancing energy conversion efficiency. Substituting cerium for bismuth simultaneously enhances the Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity via ionized impurity minimization. The boost in the average electronegativity offered by the self-doped transitional metal cobalt leads to an improvement in the degree of delocalization of the valence electrons. Hence, the new energy state around the Fermi energy serving as electron feed to the conduction band coherently improves the density of the state of conducting electrons. The resulting high power factor and low thermal conductivity contributed to the remarkable improvement in the figure of merit (zT = 0.55) at 473 K for an optimized doping concentration of 0.01 at. %. sample, and a significant nanoparticle size reduction from 400 nm to ~70 nm, making the highly performing materials in this study (Bi2−xCexCo2x3Se3) an excellent thermoelectric generator. The results presented here are higher than several Bi2Se3-based materials already reported.

In the present work, a new kind of nanocomposite (NC)-based solid component was prepared for formulating nanofluids (NFs). The NC comprised metal oxide (titanium dioxide, TiO2) dispersed in a conducting polymer with polyaniline (PANI) and chemically linked silyl–alkyl units in it (PSA) that were designated as T-PSA NC. The NFs with ethylene glycol (EG) as a base fluid were prepared with T-PSA NCs with various compositions of TiO2 and PSA as well for various concentrations of T-PSA NCs. The scanning electron microscopic evaluation of the NC revealed that PSA deposition on TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) decreased particle agglomeration. The PSA coating on the TiO2 NPs did not influence the crystalline structure of the TiO2 NPs, according to the X-ray diffraction patterns. The thermophysical characterization and molecular interaction features of the NFs at 303 K including a novel inorganic–organic T-PSA NC, were detailed. Furthermore, the stability of the T-PSA NC-based NFs was investigated experimentally using the zeta potential, and the particle size distribution change was analyzed using the dynamic light scattering (DLS) method. The T-PSA NCs had particle sizes that were significantly bigger than pristine PSA and pure TiO2. Most of the preparation conditions used to produce the T-PSA NCs resulted in moderately stable suspensions in EG. The results revealed that the ultrasonic velocity increased with the increase in the concentration of T-PSA NC mass % in the NFs, the refractive index and thermal conductivity increased with the increase in the concentration, and the surface tension exhibited a linear change when the ratio of mass % concentration of the T-PSA NCs increased. The combined presence of components that synergistically contribute to the electro, thermal, optical, and rheological properties is expected to attract advanced applications for NFs.

The detection of openings based on point clouds is generally based on geometric features namely the X, Y and Z coordinates of points. Existing methods exploit geometric features but ignore most of the time other attributes as colour and intensity. Such information may be however particularly interesting to recognise and segment openings in facades. In this paper, the use of radiometric information, namely colour and intensity, is investigated for the segmentation of windows from façade point clouds. The assumption is made that windows are significantly different in terms of materials and colours to be distinguished from facade walls. The exploitation of colour and intensity are considered separately. A histogram analysis method is proposed for the exploitation of intensity information whereas a region growing method based on colorimetric distances is considered for the exploitation of colours. In order to refine the results, geometric information, and more precisely depth of points with regards to façade walls, are combined to radiometric information. Several combinations of attributes are considered and provide promising results for windows segmentation based on point clouds.

Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections and diarrheal illness affect billions of people yearly. We conducted a cross-sectional survey in Nueva Santa Rosa, Guatemala to identify factors associated with STH infections and diarrhea using univariable and multivariable logistic regression models. On multivariable analyses, we found associations between STH infections and two factors: school-aged children (odds ratio (OR) vs. adults: 2.35, 95% CI 1.10–4.99) and household drinking water supply classified as ‘other improved’ (OR vs. ‘improved’: 7.00, CI 1.22–40.14). Finished floors in the household vs. natural floors were highly protective (OR 0.16, CI 0.05–0.50) for STH infection. In crowded households (>2.5 people/bedroom), observing water present at handwashing stations was also protective (OR 0.32, CI 0.11–0.98). When adjusted for drying hands, diarrhea was associated with preschool-age children (OR vs. adults: 3.33, CI 1.83–6.04), spending >10 min per round trip collecting water (OR 1.90, CI 1.02–3.56), and having a handwashing station ≤10 m near a sanitation facility (OR 3.69, CI 1.33–10.21). Our study indicates that familiar WASH interventions, such as increasing drinking water quantity and water at handwashing stations in crowded homes, coupled with a hygiene intervention like finished flooring may hold promise for STH and diarrhea control programs. HIGHLIGHTS School-aged children had over 2× the odds of STH infection than adults in our study.; ‘Other improved’ water as household drinking water was associated with 7× the odds of developing STH infection compared with ‘improved’ water.; Households with finished floors were protective for STH infection compared with natural floors.; Improved WASH interventions need consideration for STH and diarrheal disease control programs.;

The novel approach of our study consists in adapting and in evaluating a custom-made variational autoencoder (VAE) using two-dimensional (2D) convolutional neural networks (CNNs) on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images for differentiate soft vs. hard plaque components in peripheral arterial disease (PAD). Five amputated lower extremities were imaged at a clinical ultra-high field 7 Tesla MRI. Ultrashort echo time (UTE), T1-weighted (T1w) and T2-weighted (T2w) datasets were acquired. Multiplanar reconstruction (MPR) images were obtained from one lesion per limb. Images were aligned to each other and pseudo-color red-green-blue images were created. Four areas in latent space were defined corresponding to the sorted images reconstructed by the VAE. Images were classified from their position in latent space and scored using tissue score (TS) as following: (1) lumen patent, TS:0; (2) partially patent, TS:1; (3) mostly occluded with soft tissue, TS:3; (4) mostly occluded with hard tissue, TS:5. Average and relative percentage of TS was calculated per lesion defined as the sum of the tissue score for each image divided by the total number of images. In total, 2390 MPR reconstructed images were included in the analysis. Relative percentage of average tissue score varied from only patent (lesion #1) to presence of all four classes. Lesions #2, #3 and #5 were classified to contain tissues except mostly occluded with hard tissue while lesion #4 contained all (ranges (I): 0.2–100%, (II): 46.3–75.9%, (III): 18–33.5%, (IV): 20%). Training the VAE was successful as images with soft/hard tissues in PAD lesions were satisfactory separated in latent space. Using VAE may assist in rapid classification of MRI histology images acquired in a clinical setup for facilitating endovascular procedures.

Summary: Background: Dracunculiasis (also known as Guinea worm disease), caused by the Dracunculus medinensis nematode, is progressing towards eradication, with a reduction in cases from 3·5 million cases in the mid-1980s to only 54 human cases at the end of 2019. Most cases now occur in Chad. On April 19, 2019, a 19-year-old woman presented with D medinensis in an area within the Salamat region of Chad, where the disease had not been previously reported. We aimed to investigate the connection between this case and others detected locally and elsewhere in Chad using a combination of epidemiological and genetic approaches. Methods: In this cross-sectional field study, we conducted household case searches and informal group interviews in the Bogam, Liwi, and Tarh villages in Chad. All community members including children were eligible for participation in the outbreak investigation. Adult female D medinensis associated with this outbreak were collected for genetic analysis (18 from humans and two from dogs). Four mitochondrial genes and 22 nuclear microsatellite markers were used to assess relatedness of worms associated with the outbreak in comparison with other worms from elsewhere in Chad. Findings: Between April 12 and Sept 6, 2019, we identified 22 human cases and two canine cases of dracunculiasis associated with 15 households. Six (40%) of the 15 affected households had multiple human or canine cases within the household. Most cases of dracunculiasis in people were from three villages in Salamat (21 [95%] of 22 cases), but one case was detected nearly 400 km away in Sarh city (outside the Salamat region). All people with dracunculiasis reported a history of consuming fish and unfiltered water. Worms associated with this outbreak were genetically similar and shared the same maternal lineage. Interpretation: Molecular epidemiological results suggest a point-source outbreak that originated from a single female D medinensis, rather than newly identified sustained local transmission. The failure of the surveillance system to detect the suspected canine infection in 2018 highlights the challenge of canine D medinensis detection, particularly in areas under passive surveillance. Human movement can also contribute to dracunculiasis spread over long distances. Funding: The Carter Center.

In 2017 the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) observed the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way, Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), at a frequency of 228.1 GHz ( λ = 1.3 mm). The fundamental physics tests that even a single pulsar orbiting Sgr A* would enable motivate searching for pulsars in EHT data sets. The high observing frequency means that pulsars—which typically exhibit steep emission spectra—are expected to be very faint. However, it also negates pulse scattering, an effect that could hinder pulsar detections in the Galactic center. Additionally, magnetars or a secondary inverse Compton emission could be stronger at millimeter wavelengths than at lower frequencies. We present a search for pulsars close to Sgr A* using the data from the three most sensitive stations in the EHT 2017 campaign: the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, the Large Millimeter Telescope, and the IRAM 30 m Telescope. We apply three detection methods based on Fourier-domain analysis, the fast folding algorithm, and single-pulse searches targeting both pulsars and burst-like transient emission. We use the simultaneity of the observations to confirm potential candidates. No new pulsars or significant bursts were found. Being the first pulsar search ever carried out at such high radio frequencies, we detail our analysis methods and give a detailed estimation of the sensitivity of the search. We conclude that the EHT 2017 observations are only sensitive to a small fraction (≲2.2%) of the pulsars that may exist close to Sgr A*, motivating further searches for fainter pulsars in the region.

Neuromorphic computing systems can perform memory and computing tasks in parallel on artificial synaptic devices through simulating synaptic functions, which is promising for breaking the conventional von Neumann bottlenecks at hardware level. Artificial optoelectronic synapses enable the synergistic coupling between optical and electrical signals in synaptic modulation, which opens up an innovative path for effective neuromorphic systems. With the advantages of high mobility, optical transparency, ultrawideband tunability, and environmental stability, graphene has attracted tremendous interest for electronic and optoelectronic applications. Recent progress highlights the significance of implementing graphene into artificial synaptic devices. Herein, to better understand the potential of graphene-based synaptic devices, the fabrication technologies of graphene are first presented. Then, the roles of graphene in various synaptic devices are demonstrated. Furthermore, their typical optoelectronic applications in neuromorphic systems are reviewed. Finally, outlooks for development of synaptic devices based on graphene are proposed. This review will provide a comprehensive understanding of graphene fabrication technologies and graphene-based synaptic device for optoelectronic applications, also present an outlook for development of graphene-based synaptic device in future neuromorphic systems.

Interpretation of resolved polarized images of black holes by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) requires predictions of the polarized emission observable by an Earth-based instrument for a particular model of the black hole accretion system. Such predictions are generated by general relativistic radiative transfer (GRRT) codes, which integrate the equations of polarized radiative transfer in curved spacetime. A selection of ray-tracing GRRT codes used within the EHT Collaboration is evaluated for accuracy and consistency in producing a selection of test images, demonstrating that the various methods and implementations of radiative transfer calculations are highly consistent. When imaging an analytic accretion model, we find that all codes produce images similar within a pixel-wise normalized mean squared error (NMSE) of 0.012 in the worst case. When imaging a snapshot from a cell-based magnetohydrodynamic simulation, we find all test images to be similar within NMSEs of 0.02, 0.04, 0.04, and 0.12 in Stokes I , Q , U , and V , respectively. We additionally find the values of several image metrics relevant to published EHT results to be in agreement to much better precision than measurement uncertainties.

The traditional von Neumann structure computers cannot meet the demands of high-speed big data processing; therefore, neuromorphic computing has received a lot of interest in recent years. Brain-inspired neuromorphic computing has the advantages of low power consumption, high speed and high accuracy. In human brains, the data transmission and processing are realized through synapses. Artificial synaptic devices can be adopted to mimic the biological synaptic functionalities. Nanowire (NW) is an important building block for nanoelectronics and optoelectronics, and many efforts have been made to promote the application of NW-based synaptic devices for neuromorphic computing. Here, we will introduce the current progress of NW-based synaptic memristors and synaptic transistors. The applications of NW-based synaptic devices for neuromorphic computing will be discussed. The challenges faced by NW-based synaptic devices will be proposed. We hope this perspective will be beneficial for the application of NW-based synaptic devices in neuromorphic systems.

We report on the observations of the quasar NRAO 530 with the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) on 2017 April 5−7, when NRAO 530 was used as a calibrator for the EHT observations of Sagittarius A*. At z = 0.902, this is the most distant object imaged by the EHT so far. We reconstruct the first images of the source at 230 GHz, at an unprecedented angular resolution of ∼20 μ as, both in total intensity and in linear polarization (LP). We do not detect source variability, allowing us to represent the whole data set with static images. The images reveal a bright feature located on the southern end of the jet, which we associate with the core. The feature is linearly polarized, with a fractional polarization of ∼5%–8%, and it has a substructure consisting of two components. Their observed brightness temperature suggests that the energy density of the jet is dominated by the magnetic field. The jet extends over 60 μ as along a position angle ∼ −28°. It includes two features with orthogonal directions of polarization (electric vector position angle), parallel and perpendicular to the jet axis, consistent with a helical structure of the magnetic field in the jet. The outermost feature has a particularly high degree of LP, suggestive of a nearly uniform magnetic field. Future EHT observations will probe the variability of the jet structure on microarcsecond scales, while simultaneous multiwavelength monitoring will provide insight into the high-energy emission origin.

The adverse effect of fossil fuels on the environment is driving research to explore alternative energy sources. Research studies have demonstrated that renewables can offer a promising strategy to curb the problem, among which thermoelectric technology stands tall. However, the challenge with thermoelectric materials comes from the conflicting property of the Seebeck coefficient and the electrical conductivity resulting in a low power factor and hence a lower figure of merit. Researchers have reported various techniques to enhance the figure of merit, particularly in metal chalcogenide thermoelectric materials. Here we present a review on isovalent substitution as a tool to decouple the interdependency of the electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient to facilitate simultaneous enhancement in these two parameters. This is proven true in both cationic and anionic side substitutions in metal chalcogenide thermoelectric materials. Numerous publications relating to isovalent substitution in metal chalcogenide thermoelectric are reviewed. This will serve as a direction for current and future research to enhance thermoelectric performance and device application. This review substantiates the role of isovalent substitution in enhancing metal chalcogenide thermoelectric properties compared with conventional systems.

Lower extremity deep vein thrombosis (DVT) leads to significant morbidity including pain, swelling, and difficulty walking in the affected limb. If left untreated, DVT increases the risk of pulmonary embolism (PE), recurrent venous thromboembolism (VTE), and post thrombotic syndrome (PTS). The objective of this review was to identify catheter-directed interventions and their success rates for the treatment of lower extremity DVT. A comprehensive search of current and emerging catheter-directed interventions for lower extremity DVT treatment was conducted in PubMed and Google Scholar. Clinical trials, retrospective and prospective observational studies, and case reports were identified to classify percutaneous mechanical thrombectomy (PMT), catheter-directed thrombolysis (CDT), and pharmacomechanical CDT (PCDT) devices based on their mechanism of action and indication of use. Catheter-directed interventions such as PMT, CDT, and PCDT offer an alternative therapeutic strategy for DVT management, particularly in patients with limb-threatening conditions and absolute contraindications to anticoagulants. Currently, there are limited guidelines for the use of mechanical and pharmacomechanical devices because of the lack of clinical evidence available for their use in treatment. Future studies are required to determine the short and long-term effects of using catheter-directed interventions as well as their effectiveness in treating acute versus subacute and chronic DVT.

BackgroundIn the absence of a vaccine or pharmacological treatment, prevention and control of Guinea worm disease is dependent on timely identification and containment of cases to interrupt transmission. The Chad Guinea Worm Eradication Program (CGWEP) surveillance system detects and monitors Guinea worm disease in both humans and animals. Although Guinea worm cases in humans has declined, the discovery of canine infections in dogs in Chad has posed a significant challenge to eradication efforts. A foundational information system that supports the surveillance activities with modern data management practices is needed to support continued program efficacy.MethodsWe sought to assess the current CGWEP surveillance and information system to identify gaps and redundancies and propose system improvements. We reviewed documentation, consulted with subject matter experts and stakeholders, inventoried datasets to map data elements and information flow, and mapped data management processes. We used the Information Value Cycle (IVC) and Data-Information System-Context (DISC) frameworks to help understand the information generated and identify gaps.ResultsFindings from this study identified areas for improvement, including the need for consolidation of forms that capture the same demographic variables, which could be accomplished with an electronic data capture system. Further, the mental models (conceptual frameworks) IVC and DISC highlighted the need for more detailed, standardized workflows specifically related to information management.ConclusionsBased on these findings, we proposed a four-phased roadmap for centralizing data systems and transitioning to an electronic data capture system. These included: development of a data governance plan, transition to electronic data entry and centralized data storage, transition to a relational database, and cloud-based integration. The method and outcome of this assessment could be used by other neglected tropical disease programs looking to transition to modern electronic data capture systems.

# Background Aerial images are being used more often to map residential structures on the ground in a study area (the sample frame). However, non-coverage bias associated with overhead imagery has not been fully explored. Non-coverage occurs when residential structures are not included in a particular sampling frame. Our study aimed to evaluate non-coverage bias and sensitivity of an aerial photograph methodology in Nueva Santa Rosa, Guatemala, which was used to generate the sampling frame for a larger cross-sectional survey of sanitation, disease, and water quality. # Methods High-resolution aerial photographs of Nueva Santa Rosa were overlaid with a grid, and roof images were geo-located within randomly sampled cells, dichotomized by population as very high-density (VHD) or non-VHD. Roofs found on-site were compared to roofs found in photographs to evaluate the numbers and sizes of residences excluded from the sampling frame. Non-coverage proportions were estimated, and sensitivity and specificity were assessed. # Results There was no statistically significant difference (1.2%; 95% confidence interval, CI= -12.1-14.6) in non-coverage proportion between VHD segments (39.6%) and non-VHD cells (38.4%). Roof-size range sensitivity and specificity were 66.4% (95% CI=57.6–74.2) and 69.4% (95% CI=54.4–81.3). # Conclusions Approximately one-third of residential roofs were missed, perhaps due to outdated photographs. No substantial bias concerning population density appeared to influence our sampling frame. Further assessment of non-coverage bias, possibly expanding the roof size range to modify sensitivity and specificity, should be performed to generate geographically based best practices for overhead-image use.

The lateralized ERP N2pc component has been shown to be an effective marker of attentional object selection when elicited in a visual search task, specifically reflecting the selection of a target item among distractors. Moreover, when targets are known in advance, the visual search process is guided by representations of target features held in working memory at the time of search, thus guiding attention to objects with target-matching features. Previous studies have shown that manipulating working memory availability via concurrent tasks or within task manipulations influences visual search performance and the N2pc. Other studies have indicated that visual (non-spatial) vs. spatial working memory manipulations have differential contributions to visual search. To investigate this the current study assesses participants' visual and spatial working memory ability independent of the visual search task to determine whether such individual differences in working memory affect task performance and the N2pc. Participants (n = 205) completed a visual search task to elicit the N2pc and separate visual working memory (VWM) and spatial working memory (SPWM) assessments. Greater SPWM, but not VWM, ability is correlated with and predicts higher visual search accuracy and greater N2pc amplitudes. Neither VWM nor SPWM was related to N2pc latency. These results provide additional support to prior behavioral and neural visual search findings that spatial WM availability, whether as an ability of the participant's processing system or based on task demands, plays an important role in efficient visual search.

BackgroundGuinea worm is a debilitating parasitic infection targeted for eradication. Annual human cases have dropped from approximately 3,500,000 in 1986 to 54 in 2019. Recent identification of canine cases in Chad threatens progress, and therefore detection, prevention, and containment of canine cases is a priority. We investigated associations between disease knowledge, community engagement, and canine cases in Chad to identify opportunities to improve active surveillance.MethodsWe surveyed 627 respondents (villagers, local leaders, community volunteers, and supervisors) across 45 villages under active surveillance. Descriptive statistics were analyzed by respondent category. Logistic regression models were fitted to assess the effects of volunteer visit frequency on villager knowledge.ResultsKnowledge increased with respondents' associations with the Guinea worm program. Household visit frequency by community volunteers was uneven: 53.0% of villagers reported visits at least twice weekly and 21.4% of villagers reported never being visited. Villagers visited by a volunteer at least twice weekly had better knowledge of Guinea worm symptoms (OR: 1.71; 95% CI: 1.04-2.79) and could name more prevention strategies (OR: 2.04; 95% CI: 1.32-3.15) than villagers visited less frequently. The primary motivation to report was to facilitate care-seeking for people with Guinea worm. Knowledge of animal "containment" to prevent contamination of water, knowledge of rewards for reporting animal cases, and ability to name any reasons to report Guinea worm were each positively correlated with village canine case counts.ConclusionsCommunity volunteers play crucial roles in educating their neighbors about Guinea worm and facilitating surveillance. Additional training and more attentive management of volunteers and supervisors could increase visit frequency and further amplify their impact. Emphasizing links between animal and human cases, the importance of animal containment, and animal rewards might improve surveillance and canine case detection. The surveillance system should be evaluated routinely to expand generalizability of data and monitor changes over time.

Background: The human gut microbiota has emerged as a key factor in the development of obesity. Certain probiotic strains have shown anti-obesity effects. The objective of this study was to investigate whether Bifidobacterium longum APC1472 has anti-obesity effects in high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obese mice and whether B. longum APC1472 supplementation reduces body-mass index (BMI) in healthy overweight/obese individuals as the primary outcome. B. longum APC1472 effects on waist-to-hip ratio (W/H ratio) and on obesity-associated plasma biomarkers were analysed as secondary outcomes. Methods: B. longum APC1472 was administered to HFD-fed C57BL/6 mice in drinking water for 16 weeks. In the human intervention trial, participants received B. longum APC1472 or placebo supplementation for 12 weeks, during which primary and secondary outcomes were measured at the beginning and end of the intervention. Findings: B. longum APC1472 supplementation was associated with decreased bodyweight, fat depots accumulation and increased glucose tolerance in HFD-fed mice. While, in healthy overweight/obese adults, the supplementation of B. longum APC1472 strain did not change primary outcomes of BMI (0.03, 95% CI [-0.4, 0.3]) or W/H ratio (0.003, 95% CI [-0.01, 0.01]), a positive effect on the secondary outcome of fasting blood glucose levels was found (-0.299, 95% CI [-0.44, -0.09]). Interpretation: This study shows a positive translational effect of B. longum APC1472 on fasting blood glucose from a preclinical mouse model of obesity to a human intervention study in otherwise healthy overweight and obese individuals. This highlights the promising potential of B. longum APC1472 to be developed as a valuable supplement in reducing specific markers of obesity. Nutrition is a crucial component for maintenance of brain function and mental health. Accumulating evidence suggests that certain molecular compounds derived from diet can exert neuroprotective effects against chronic stress, and moreover improve important neuronal processes vulnerable to the stress response, such as plasticity and neurogenesis. Phospholipids are naturally occurring amphipathic molecules with promising potential to promote brain health. However, it is unclear whether phospholipids are able to modulate neuronal function directly under a stress-related context. In this study, we investigate the neuroprotective effects of phosphatidylcholine (PC), lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC), phosphatidylserine (PS), phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), phosphatidylinositol (PI), phosphatidylglycerol (PG), phosphatidic acid (PA), sphingomyelin (SM) and cardiolipin (CL) against corticosterone (CORT)-induced cytotoxicity in primary cultured rat cortical neurons. In addition, we examine their capacity to modulate proliferation and differentiation of hippocampal neural progenitor cells (NPCs).We show that PS, PG and PE can reverse CORT-induced cytotoxicity and neuronal depletion in cortical cells. On the other hand, phospholipid exposure was unable to prevent the decrease of Bdnf expression produced by CORT. Interestingly, PS was able to increase hippocampal NPCs neurosphere size, and PE elicited a significant increase in astrocytic differentiation in hippocampal NPCs. Together, these results indicate that specific phospholipids protect cortical cells against CORT-induced cytotoxicity and improve proliferation and astrocytic differentiation in hippocampal NPCs, suggesting potential implications on neurodevelopmental and neuroprotective pathways relevant for stress-related disorders.

After a ten-year absence of reported Guinea worm disease in Chad, human cases were rediscovered in 2010, and canine cases were first recorded in 2012. In response, active surveillance for Guinea worm in both humans and animals was re-initiated in 2012. As of 2018, the Chad Guinea Worm Eradication Program (CGWEP) maintains an extensive surveillance system that operates in 1,895 villages, and collects information about worms, hosts (animals and humans), and animal owners. This report describes in detail the CGWEP surveillance system and explores epidemiological trends in canine Guinea worm cases during 2015-2018. Our results showed an increased in the number of canine cases detected by the system during the period of interest. The proportion of worms that were contained (i.e., water contamination was prevented) improved significantly over time, from 72.8% in 2015 to 85.7% in 2018 (Mantel-Haenszel chi-square = 253.3, P < 0.0001). Additionally, approximately 5% of owners of infected dogs reported that the dog had a Guinea worm-like infection earlier that year; 12.6% had a similar worm in a previous year. The proportion of dogs with a history of infection in a previous year increased over time (Mantel-Haenszel chi-square = 18.8, P < 0.0001). Canine cases were clustered in space and time: most infected dogs (80%) were from the Chari Baguirmi (38.1%) and Moyen Chari Regions (41.9%), and for each year the peak month of identified canine cases was June, with 78.5% occurring during March through August. Findings from this report evoke additional questions about why some dogs are repeatedly infected. Our results may help to target interventions and surveillance efforts in terms of space, time, and dogs susceptible to recurrent infection, with the ultimate goal of Guinea worm eradication.

Abstract The presence of defects in thermoelectric materials plays a significant role in the modification their properties by influencing the behavior of electrons and phonons. Dopants with a unique f‐orbital can directly cause distortions in electronic density of states (eDOS) and phonon transport mechanism by intentionally inducing defects in their lattice. The theoretical and experimental outcomes of engineered vacancy defects are investigated by intentional doping of f‐block rare earth elements in β‐Zn4Sb3. Thermoelectric behavior breaks down the inverse relation and results in a parallel increase in Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity for β‐(Zn0.997Ce0.003)4Sb3 and β‐(Zn0.997Er0.003)4Sb3. This synergistic response triples the power factor of a thermoelectric β‐Zn4Sb3 system realized by the impurity induced resonant distortion in eDOS. From first principle GGA + U calculations, the above‐mentioned unconventional properties are attributed to the effect of doping induced vacancy formation and the formation of resonant impurity levels. Hence, it is postulated that defect engineering can be a broad strategy to improve the power factor of the system and can be extended to other thermoelectric materials.
