4. The Rigidity Dependence of Galactic Cosmic-Ray Fluxes and Its Connection With the Diffusion Coefficient

Abstract: Thanks to tremendous experimental efforts, galactic cosmic-ray fluxes are being measured up to the unprecedented percent precision level. The logarithmic slope of these fluxes is a crucial quantity that promises us information on the diffusion properties and the primary or secondary nature of the different species. However, these measured slopes are sometimes interpreted in the pure diffusive regime, guiding to misleading conclusions. In this paper, we have studied the propagation of galactic cosmic rays by computing the fluxes of species between H and Fe using the USINE code and considering all the relevant physical processes and an updated set of cross-section data. We show that the slope of the well-studied secondary-to-primary B/C ratio is distinctly different from the diffusion coefficient slope, by an offset of ∼0.2 in the rigidity range in which the AMS-02 data reach their best precision (several tens of GV). Furthermore, we have demonstrated that none of the species from H to Fe follows the expectations of the pure-diffusive regime. We argue that these differences arise from propagation processes such as fragmentation, convection, and reacceleration, which cannot be neglected. On this basis, we also provide predictions for the spectral slope of elemental fluxes not yet analysed by the AMS collaboration.

Abstract: The Cosmic Ray Energetics And Mass for the International Space Station (ISS-CREAM) instrument is a next-generation experiment for the direct detection and study of cosmic-ray nuclei and electrons. With a long exposure in low Earth orbit, the experiment will determine the particle fluxes and spectral details of cosmic-ray nuclei from hydrogen to iron, over an energy range of about 10(exp 12) eV to > 10(exp 15) eV, and of cosmic-ray electrons over an energy range of about 5x10(exp 10) eV to > 10(exp 13) eV. The instrument was deployed to the ISS in August 2017 on the SpaceX CRS-12 mission. We review the design, implementation and performance of one of the ISS-CREAM detector systems: a boron loaded scintillation detector used in discriminating electron-induced events from the much more abundant cosmic-ray nuclei.

Abstract: The vertical diffusive halo size of the Galaxy, $L$, is a key parameter for dark matter indirect searches. It can be better determined thanks to recent AMS-02 data. We set constraints on $L$ from Be/B and $^{10}$Be/Be data, and we performed a consistency check with positron data. We detail the dependence of Be/B and $^{10}$Be/Be on $L$ and forecast on which energy range better data would be helpful for future $L$ improvements. We used USINE v3.5 for the propagation of nuclei, and $e^+$ were calculated with the pinching method of Boudaud et al. (2017). The current AMS-02 Be/B ($\sim3\%$ precision) and ACE-CRIS $^{10}$Be/Be ($\sim 10\%$ precision) data bring similar and consistent constraints on $L$. The AMS-02 Be/B data alone constrain $L=5^{+3}_{-2}$~kpc at a 68\% confidence level (spanning different benchmark transport configurations), a range for which most models do not overproduce positrons. Future experiments need to deliver percent-level accuracy on $^{10}$Be/$^9$Be anywhere below 10 GV to further constrain $L$. Forthcoming AMS-02, HELIX, and PAMELA $^{10}$Be/$^9$Be results will further test and possibly tighten the limits derived here. Elemental ratios involving radioactive species with different lifetimes (e.g. Al/Mg and Cl/Ar) are also awaited to provide complementary and robuster constraints., 15 pages, 10 figures, 6 tables. Abstract: International audience; Cosmic Ray Energetics And Mass for the International Space Station (ISS-CREAM) experi-ment is designed to study the composition and energy spectra of cosmic-ray particles from 10^12 to 10^15 eV. ISS-CREAM was launched and deployed to the ISS in August 2017. The ISS-CREAM payload employs a Silicon Charge Detector for charge measurements, Top and Bot-tom Counting Detector for electron-hadron separation and a low-energy trigger, a Boronated Scintillator Detector for additional electron-hadron separation, and a Calorimeter (CAL) for en-ergy measurements and a high-energy trigger. The CAL is constructed of 20 layers of tungsten plates interleaved with scintillating fiber ribbons read out by hybrid-photodiodes (HPDs) and densified carbon targets. Each CAL layer is made of 3.5 mm (1 X_0) thick tungsten plates alter-nating with fifty 0.5 mm thick and 1 cm wide scintillating fiber ribbons. Consecutive layers of fiber ribbons are installed orthogonal to each other. Energy deposition in the CAL determines the particle energy and provides tracking information to determine which segment(s) of the charge detectors to use for the charge measurement. Tracking for showers is accomplished by extrapolating each shower axis back to the charge detectors. The performance of the ISS-CREAM CAL during flight is presented.

Abstract: International audience; Cosmic Ray Energetics And Mass for the International Space Station (ISS-CREAM) is an experiment for studying the origin, acceleration, and propagation mechanisms of high-energy cosmic rays. The ISS-CREAM instrument was launched on the 14th of August 2017 to the ISS aboard the SpaceX-12 Dragon spacecraft. The Top and Bottom Counting Detectors (TCD/BCD) are parts of the ISS-CREAM instrument and designed for studying electron and gamma-ray physics. The TCD/BCD each consist of an array of 20 × 20 photodiodes on a plastic scintillator. The TCD/BCD can separate electrons from protons by using the difference between the shapes of electromagnetic and hadronic showers in the high energy region. The Boosted Decision Tree (BDT) method, which is a deep learning method, is used in this separation study. We will present results of the electron/proton separation study and rejection power in various energy ranges.

Abstract: International audience; The Cosmic Ray Energetics And Mass (CREAM) instrument on the International Space Station (ISS) is an experiment to study origin, propagation, acceleration and elemental composition of cosmic rays. The Top Counting Detector (TCD) and Bottom Counting Detector (BCD) are parts of the detector suite of the ISS-CREAM experiment and are designed to separate electrons and protons for studying electron and gamma-ray physics. In addition, the TCD/BCD provide a redundant trigger to that of the calorimeter and a low energy trigger to the ISS-CREAM instrument. After launching, the TCD/BCD trigger was found to be working well. Also, the TCD/BCD have been stable and their hit positions were confirmed to be well matched with other detectors on board. We present the performance and status of the TCD/BCD in flight.

Abstract: International audience; The Cosmic Ray Energetics And Mass experiment for the International Space Station (ISS-CREAM) is a space-borne mission designed for the precision measurement of the energy and elemental composition of cosmic rays. The Silicon Charge Detector (SCD), placed at the top of the ISS-CREAM payload, consists of 4 layers. Each layer has 2688 silicon pixels and associated electronics arranged in such a fashion that its active detection area of 78.2 × 73.6 cm 2 is free of dead area. The foremost goal of the SCD is to efficiently and precisely measure the charge of cosmic rays passing through it. The 4-layer configuration was chosen to achieve the best precision in measuring the charge of cosmic rays within the constraints on the mass, volume and power allotted to it. The amount of material used for its support structure was minimized as well to reduce the chance of interactions of the cosmic ray within the structure. Given the placement of the SCD, its 4-layer configuration and the minimal amount of material in the cosmic-ray trajectory, the SCD is designed to measure the charge of cosmic rays ranging from protons to iron nuclei with excellent detection efficiency and charge resolution. We present the design and fabrication of the SCD as well as its performance during space environment tests which it underwent successfully. We also present its performance in charge measurement using heavy ions in a beam test at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research.

Abstract: The Cosmic Ray Energetics And Mass for the International Space Station (ISS-CREAM) instrument is a next-generation experiment for the direct detection and study of cosmic-ray nuclei and electrons. With a long exposure in low Earth orbit, the experiment will determine the particle fluxes and spectral details of cosmic-ray nuclei from hydrogen to iron, over an energy range of about 1 0 12 eV to > 1 0 15 eV, and of cosmic-ray electrons over an energy range of about 5 × 1 0 10 eV to > 1 0 13 eV. The instrument was deployed to the ISS in August 2017 on the SpaceX CRS-12 mission. We review the design, implementation and performance of one of the ISS-CREAM detector systems: a boron loaded scintillation detector used in discriminating electron-induced events from the much more abundant cosmic-ray nuclei.

The TCD/BCD help distinguish electrons from protons by comparing the hit and shower width distributions for electrons and protons. The e/p separation capability of the TCD/BCD is studied by using the GEANT3 simulation package, and optimal parameters for the e/p separation are obtained.

It is designed to directly measure and identify theelemental composition of incident Galactic cosmic rays from a few hundred GeV to PeV energies.Such large energy range sensitivity is reached by using an electromagnetic sampling calorimeter(CAL) which measures the energy deposit of particle-induced showers. The CAL is composedof twenty layers of tungsten plates interleaved with scintillating fibers, and glued together usingepoxy-coated fiberglass to comply with space launch requirements. In August 2015, beam testmeasurements were performed at CERN to verify the performance of the CAL using layers ofepoxy-coated fiberglass placed between tungsten plates. The CAL response to electron and pionbeams and its performance are reported and compared with previous beam test configurations.

Abstract: International audience; The Cosmic Ray Energetics And Mass experiment for the International Space Station (ISS-CREAM) is a space-borne mission designed for the precision measurement of the energy and elemental composition of cosmic rays. It is scheduled to be launched and installed on the ISS in August 2017. The Silicon Charge Detector (SCD), placed at the top of the ISS-CREAM payload, consists of 4 layers. Each layer has 2688 silicon pixels and associated electronics arranged in such a fashion that its active detection area of 78 x 74 cm2 is free of any dead area. The foremost goal of the SCD is to efficiently and precisely measure the charge of cosmic rays passing through it. The 4-layer configuration was chosen to achieve the best precision in measuring the charge of cosmic rays within the constraints on the mass, volume and power allotted to it. The amount of material used for its support structure was minimized as well to reduce the chance of interactions of the cosmic ray within the structure. Given the placement of the SCD, its 4-layer configuration and the minimal amount of material in the cosmic-ray trajectory, the SCD is designed to measure the charge of cosmic rays ranging from protons to iron nuclei with excellent detection efficiency and charge resolution. We present the design and fabrication of the SCD. It successfully underwent space environment tests including vibration and thermal-vacuum qualification. We present the performance of the SCD during these tests, as well as its charge-measurement performance on the ground using cosmic muons and heavy ions in CERN beam tests.

Abstract: International audience; The Cosmic-Ray Energetics And Mass (CREAM) instrument for the International Space Station (ISS) is a detector for studying the origin, acceleration and propagation mechanism of high-energy cosmic rays. The ISS-CREAM instrument is scheduled to launch in 2017 to the ISS. The Top and Bottom Counting Detectors (TCD/BCD) are designed for studying electron and gamma-ray physics. The TCD/BCD are composed of a plastic scintillator and an array of photodiodes The active detection areas of the TCD/BCD are 500 $\times$ 500 mm$^2$ and 600 $\times$ 600 mm$^2$, respectively. The TCD/BCD were completed in 2015 and passed the environmental tests for safety in a space environment. After finishing these tests, the TCD/BCD were integrated with the payload. The TCD is located between the carbon target of the ISS-CREAM instrument and the calorimeter, and the BCD is located below the calorimeter. The TCD/BCD can distinguish between electrons and protons by using the different shapes between electromagnetic and hadronic showers in the high-energy region. We study the TCD/BCD performance in various energy ranges by using GEANT3 simulation data. Here, we present the status of the electron and proton separation study with the TCD/BCD simulation.

Abstract: International audience; The Boron And Carbon Cosmic rays in the Upper Stratosphere (BACCUS) balloon-borne exper-iment flew for 30 days over Antarctica in December 2016. It is the successor of the CREAMballoon program in Antarctica which recorded a total cumulative exposure of 161 days. BAC-CUS is primarily aimed to measure cosmic-ray boron and carbon fluxes at the highest energiesreachable with a balloon or satellite experiment, in order to provide essential information for abetter understanding of cosmic-ray propagation in the Galaxy. The payload is made of multipleparticle physics detectors which measure the charge up to Z=26 and energy of incident particlesfrom a few hundred GeV to a few PeV. The newly designed Transition Radiation Detector (TRD)measures signals that are a function of the charge and Lorentz factor. In April 2016, BACCUSwas taken to CERN in its flight configuration to characterize its detectors’ response to beams ofelectrons and pions. The performance of the TRD using beam test data are reported in this paper.

Abstract: Top-of-atmosphere (TOA) cosmic-ray (CR) fluxes from satellites and balloon-borne experiments are snapshots of the solar activity imprinted on the interstellar (IS) fluxes. Given a series of snapshots, the unknown IS flux shape and the level of modulation (for each snapshot) can be recovered. We wish (i) to provide the most accurate determination of the IS H and He fluxes from TOA data alone, (ii) to obtain the associated modulation levels (and uncertainties) while fully accounting for the correlations with the IS flux uncertainties, and (iii) to inspect whether the minimal force-field approximation is sufficient to explain all the data at hand. Using H and He TOA measurements, including the recent high-precision AMS, BESS-Polar, and PAMELA data, we performed a non-parametric fit of the IS fluxes $J^{\rm IS}_{\rm H,~He}$ and modulation level $\phi_i$ for each data-taking period. We relied on a Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) engine to extract the probability density function and correlations (hence the credible intervals) of the sought parameters. Although H and He are the most abundant and best measured CR species, several datasets had to be excluded from the analysis because of inconsistencies with other measurements. From the subset of data passing our consistency cut, we provide ready-to-use best-fit and credible intervals for the H and He IS fluxes from MeV/n to PeV/n energy (with a relative precision in the range [2-10\%] at 1$\sigma$). Given the strong correlation between $J^{\rm IS}$ and $\phi_i$ parameters, the uncertainties on $J^{\rm IS}$ translate into $\Delta\phi\approx \pm 30$~MV (at 1$\sigma$) for all experiments. We also find that the presence of $^3$He in He data biases $\phi$ towards higher $\phi$ values by $\sim 30$~MV. The force-field approximation gives an excellent ($\chi^2/$dof$=1.02$) description of the recent high-precision TOA H and He fluxes., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, 3 tables (matches A&A accepted version) + Erratum for Eq. Abstract: This paper presents a complete description of Virgo, the French-Italian gravitational wave detector. The detector, built at Cascina, near Pisa (Italy), is a very large Michelson interferometer, with 3 km-long arms. In this paper, following a presentation of the physics requirements, leading to the specifications for the construction of the detector, a detailed description of all its different elements is given. These include civil engineering infrastructures, a huge ultra-high vacuum (UHV) chamber (about 6000 cubic metres), all of the optical components, including high quality mirrors and their seismic isolating suspensions, all of the electronics required to control the interferometer and for signal detection. The expected performances of these different elements are given, leading to an overall sensitivity curve as a function of the incoming gravitational wave frequency. This description represents the detector as built and used in the first data-taking runs. Improvements in different parts have been and continue to be performed, leading to better sensitivities. Abstract: The secondary-to-primary B/C ratio is widely used to study Galactic cosmic-ray propagation processes. The 2H/4He and 3He/4He ratios probe a different Z/A regime, therefore testing the `universality' of propagation. We revisit the constraints on diffusion-model parameters set by the quartet (1H, 2H, 3He, 4He), using the most recent data as well as updated formulae for the inelastic and production cross-sections. The analysis relies on the USINE propagation package and a Markov Chain Monte Carlo technique to estimate the probability density functions of the parameters. Simulated data are also used to validate analysis strategies. The fragmentation of CNO cosmic rays (resp. NeMgSiFe) on the ISM during their propagation contributes to 20% (resp. 20%) of the 2H and 15% (resp. 10%) of the 3He flux at high energy. The C to Fe elements are also responsible for up to 10% of the 4He flux measured at 1 GeV/n. The analysis of 3He/4He (and to a less extent 2H/4He) data shows that the transport parameters are consistent with those from the B/C analysis: the diffusion model with delta~0.7 (diffusion slope), Vc~20 km/s (galactic wind), Va~40 km/s (reacceleration) is favoured, but the combination delta~0.2, Vc~0, and Va~80 km/s is a close second. The confidence intervals on the parameters show that the constraints set by the quartet data are competitive with those brought by the B/C data. These constraints are tighter when adding the 3He (or 2H) flux measurements, and the tightest when further adding the He flux. For the latter, the analysis of simulated and real data show an increased sensitivity to biases. Using secondary-to-primary ratio along with a loose prior on the source parameters is recommended to get the most robust constraints on the transport parameters., Comment: 17 pages, 7 tables, 20 figures (submitted to A&A)

Abstract: A proximity focusing Cherenkov imager called CHERCAM, has been built for the charge measurement of nuclear cosmic rays with the CREAM instrument. It consists of a silica aerogel radiator plane across from a detector plane equipped with 1,600 1" diameter photomultipliers. The two planes are separated by a ring expansion gap. The Cherenkov light yield is proportional to the charge squared of the incident particle. The expected relative light collection accuracy is in the few percents range. It leads to an expected single element separation over the range of nuclear charge Z of main interest 1 < Z < 26. CHERCAM is designed to fly with the CREAM balloon experiment. Abstract: Different methods to measure the characteristics of silica aerogel tiles used as Cherenkov radiator in the CREAM and AMS experiments have been investigated to optimize the detector performances. The measurement accuracy dictated by the physics objectives on the velocity and charge resolutions set stringent requirements on the aerogel refractive index determination, namely Δ n ∼ 1.5 × 10 − 4 and Δ n ∼ 5 × 10 − 4 for the AMS and CREAM imagers, respectively. The matching of such accuracies for this material turned out to be a metrological challenge, and finally led to a full R&D program, to develop an appropriate characterization procedure. Preliminary studies performed with a standard refractive index measurement technique (laser beam deviation by a prism) have revealed a significant systematic index nonuniformity for the AMS tiles at a level ( 10 − 3 ) , not acceptable considering the aimed accuracy. These large variations were confirmed in a beam test. A second method, mapping the transverse index gradient by deflection of a laser beam entering normally to the tile has then been developed. It is shown that this procedure is suitable to reach the required accuracy, at the price of using both methods combined. The several hundreds of tiles of the radiator plane of the CREAM and AMS Cherenkov imagers were characterized using a simplified procedure, however, appropriate for each case, compromising between the amount of work and the time available. The experimental procedures and set-ups used are described in the text, and the obtained results are reported.

Abstract: The balloon-borne Cosmic Ray Energetics And Mass (CREAM) experiment flew for the third time in Antarctica between 19 December 2007 and 16 January 2008. This ∼29-day flight resulted in an accumulation of almost 100 days of exposure for the CREAM payload. The instrument included double layers of finely segmented Silicon detectors and an imaging Cherenkov Camera for charge measurements. A finely segmented tungsten-scintillator fiber ionization calorimeter was used for energy measurements. Energy spectra of cosmic ray particles for 1 ≤ Z ≤26 were measured at the top of atmosphere with excellent charge and energy resolution. CREAM extends direct measurements of cosmic-ray composition to energies where ground-based air shower measurements are possible, thereby providing calibration for those indirect measurements. Abstract: The Cosmic-Ray Energetics And Mass balloon-borne experiment has been launched twice in Antarctica, first in December 2004 and again in December 2005. It circumnavigated the South Pole three times during the first flight, which set a flight duration record of 42 days. A cumulative duration of 70 days within 13 months was achieved when the second flight completed 28 days during two circumnavigations of the Pole on 13 January 2006. Both the science instrument and support systems functioned extremely well, and a total 117 GB of data including 67 million science events were collected during these two flights. Preliminary analysis indicates that the data extend well above 100 TeV and follow reasonable power laws. The payload recovered from the first flight has been refurbished for the third flight in 2007, whereas the payload from the second flight is being refurbished to be ready for the fourth flight in 2008. Each flight will extend the reach of precise cosmic-ray composition measurements to energies not previously possible.

Abstract: International audience; A Cherenkov imager, CHERCAM (CHERenkov CAMera), has been designed and built for the CREAM (Cosmic-Ray Energetic and Mass) balloon-borne experiment. The instrument will perform charge measurements of nuclear cosmic-ray over a range extending from proton to iron. It will achieve individual charge separation of the elements over this range [M. Buénerd, et al., in: 28th ICRC, Tsukuba, Japan, OG 1.5, 2003, p. 2157. [2]] (0:25 charge unit rms), allowing measurements of the energy spectra of individual elements by the CREAM instrument in the energy range from 1010 to 1015 eV. CHERCAM is a proximity focused imager, based on a dedicated mechanical structure, equipped with an n ¼ 1:05 silica aerogel radiator plane, separated by a 12 cm ring expansion gap from a photon detector plane consisting of a 1600 photomultiplier array, backed with dedicated front-end readout electronics. A prototype of the detector has been recently tested with 100 and 300 GeV/c Z ¼ 1 particle beams at CERN. The contribution reports on both the beam test results of the prototype, and of the counter performance in ground operation.

Abstract: International audience; The Cosmic Ray Energetics And Mass (CREAM) experiment was designed and constructed to push spectral measurements of individual cosmic-ray nuclei from H to Fe to energies approaching the “knee” in a series of balloon flights. A cumulative exposure of 70 days was achieved during two circumpolar flights in Antarctica in 2005 and 2006. Direct measurements at the top of the atmosphere allow event-by-event determination of the incident cosmic-ray particle charge and energy. The objective is to investigate whether and how the knee structure is related to the mechanisms of particle acceleration, propagation, and confinement. The recovered payload is being refurbished for its third flight, which is scheduled for launch in December 2007. The combination of sophisticated particle detectors and long duration balloon flight capabilities now promise high quality measurements over an energy range that was not previously accessible.

Abstract: The AMS experiment includes a Cherenkov imager for mass and charge identification of charged cosmic rays. A second generation prototype has been constructed and its performances evaluated both with cosmic ray particles and with beam ions. In-beam tests have been performed using secondary nuclei from the fragmentation of 20 GeV/c per nucleon Pb ions and 158 GeV/c per nucleon In from the CERN SPS in 2002 and 2003. Partial results are reported. The performances of the prototype for the velocity and the charge measurements have been studied over the range of ion charge Z less, approximate 30. A sample of candidate silica aerogel radiators for the flight model of the detector has been tested. The measured velocity resolution of the detector was found to scale with $Z^{-1}$ as expected, with a value σ(β)/β≈0.7–110^{-3} for singly charged particles and an asymptotic limit in Z of 0.4–0.6×10^{-4}. The measured charge resolution obtained for the n=1.05 aerogel radiator material selected for the flight model of the detector is σ(Z)=0.18 (statistical) circle plus operator 0.015 (systematic), ensuring a good charge separation up to the iron element, for the prototype in the reported experimental conditions.

Abstract: The possible sources of light nuclei populations observed recently below the geomagnetic cutoff by the AMS experiment are discussed in terms of nuclear processes: fragmentation of the incoming flux of cosmic helium on atmospheric nuclei, and nuclear coalescence from proton and helium induced reactions.
