Abstract Two-dimensional (2D) ion crystals may represent a promising path to scale up qubit numbers for ion trap quantum information processing. However, to realize universal quantum computing in this system, individually addressed high-fidelity two-qubit entangling gates still remain challenging due to the inevitable micromotion of ions in a 2D crystal as well as the technical difficulty in 2D addressing. Here we demonstrate two-qubit entangling gates between any ion pairs in a 2D crystal of four ions. We use symmetrically placed crossed acousto-optic deflectors (AODs) to drive Raman transitions and achieve an addressing crosstalk error below 0.1%. We design and demonstrate a gate sequence by alternatingly addressing two target ions, making it compatible with any single-ion addressing techniques without crosstalk from multiple addressing beams. We further examine the gate performance versus the micromotion amplitude of the ions and show that its effect can be compensated by a recalibration of the laser intensity without degrading the gate fidelity. Our work paves the way for ion trap quantum computing with hundreds to thousands of qubits on a 2D ion crystal.

Abstract Generating ion-photon entanglement is a crucial step for scalable trapped-ion quantum networks. To avoid the crosstalk on memory qubits carrying quantum information, it is common to use a different ion species for ion-photon entanglement generation such that the scattered photons are far off-resonant for the memory qubits. However, such a dual-species scheme can be subject to inefficient sympathetic cooling due to the mass mismatch of the ions. Here we demonstrate a trapped-ion quantum network node in the dual-type qubit scheme where two types of qubits are encoded in the S and F hyperfine structure levels of 171Yb+ ions. We generate ion photon entanglement for the S-qubit in a typical timescale of hundreds of milliseconds, and verify its small crosstalk on a nearby F-qubit with coherence time above seconds. Our work demonstrates an enabling function of the dual-type qubit scheme for scalable quantum networks.

We study how the information flows in many-body dynamics governed by random quantum circuits and discover a rich set of dynamical phase transitions in this information flow. The phase-transition points and their critical exponents are established across Clifford and Haar random circuits through finite-size scaling. The flow of both classical and quantum information, measured respectively by Holevo and coherent information, shows similar dynamical phase transition behaviors. We investigate how the phase transitions depend on the initial location of the information and the final probe region, and find ubiquitous behaviors in these transitions, revealing interesting properties about the information propagation and scrambling in this quantum many-body model. Our paper underscores rich behaviors of the information flow in large systems with numerous phase transitions, thereby sheds light on the understanding of quantum many-body dynamics.

Abstract Non-Hermiticity has widespread applications in quantum physics. It brings about distinct topological phases without Hermitian counterparts, and gives rise to the fundamental challenge of phase classification. Here, we report an experimental demonstration of unsupervised learning of non-Hermitian topological phases with the nitrogen-vacancy center platform. In particular, we implement the non-Hermitian twister model, which hosts peculiar knotted topological phases, with a solid-state quantum simulator consisting of an electron spin and a nearby 13C nuclear spin in a nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond. By tuning the microwave pulses, we efficiently generate a set of experimental data without phase labels. Furthermore, based on the diffusion map method, we cluster this set of experimental raw data into three different knotted phases in an unsupervised fashion without a priori knowledge of the system, which is in sharp contrast to the previously implemented supervised learning phases of matter. Our results showcase the intriguing potential for autonomous classification of exotic unknown topological phases with experimental raw data.

Machine learning has been applied to problems in condensed matter physics, but its performance in an experimental setting needs testing. Zhang et al. study the effects of adversarial perturbations on a neural-network-based topological phase classifier, applied to experimental data from an NV center in diamond.

Quantum simulators should be able to give insight on exotic physics models such as supersymmetric extensions of Standard Model. Here, the authors demonstrate a first step in this direction, realising a prototypical SUSY model (and spontaneous SUSY breaking within it) using a trapped ion quantum simulator.

Quantum phase transition occurs in many-body systems with abrupt changes in the ground state around zero temperature. Here the authors report signatures of quantum phase transition in single trapped ion that can be described using quantum Rabi model.

The trapped-ion quantum simulator has demonstrated qualitative properties of different physical models for up to tens of ions. In particular, a linear ion chain naturally hosts long-range Ising interactions under the laser driving, which has been used for various phenomena, such as quantum phase transition, localization, thermalization, and information propagation. For near-term practical usage, a central task is to find more quantitative applications of the noisy quantum simulators that are robust to small errors in the parameters. Here we report the quantum simulation of a long-range transverse-field Ising model using up to 61 ions and probe the critical behavior of its quantum phase transition through the Kibble-Zurek mechanism. By calibrating and verifying the coupling coefficients, we realize the same model for increasing ion numbers, so as to extract a critical exponent free of the finite-size effect. For ferromagnetic interaction, our experimental result agrees with the previous numerical prediction. As for the antiferromagnetic case, signals are too weak to fit a critical exponent due to the frustration in the interaction, but still consistent with the theory.

Quantum information scrambling has received tremendous attention owing to its key concept in the fields of quantum chaos and quantum gravity. Here, with exploiting a fully controllable superconducting quantum processor, we study the verified scrambling in a 1D spin chain by an analog superconducting quantum simulator with the signs and values of individual driving and coupling terms fully controllable. By engineering opposite Hamiltonians on two subsystems, we measure the temporal and spatial patterns of out-of-time ordered correlators (OTOC), with the Hamiltonian mismatch and the decoherence extracted quantitatively from the scrambling dynamics, providing a benchmarking tool for probing not only the spatial but the temporal patterns of scrambling dynamics in many-body systems. Our work demonstrates the superconducting system with strong controllability as a powerful quantum simulator.

Reaching a quantum advantage in metrology usually requires hard-to-prepare two-mode entangled states such as NOON states. Here, instead, the authors demonstrate single-mode phase estimation using Fock states superpositions in a superconducting qubit-oscillator system.

Quantum many-body scarred systems host special nonthermal eigenstates that support periodic revival dynamics and weakly break the ergodicity. Here, we study the quantum information scrambling dynamics in quantum many-body scarred systems, with a focus on the “PXP” model. We use the out-of-time-ordered correlator (OTOC) and Holevo information as measures of the information scrambling and apply an efficient numerical method based on matrix product operators to compute them up to 41 spins. We find that both the OTOC and Holevo information exhibit a linear light cone and periodic oscillations inside the light cone for initial states within the scarred subspace, which is in sharp contrast to thermal or many-body localized systems. The periodic revivals of OTOCs and Holevo information signify unusual breakdown of quantum chaos and are not equivalent to the revival dynamics of state fidelity or local observables studied in the previous literature. To explain the formation of the linear light-cone structure, we provide a perturbation-type calculation based on a phenomenological model. In addition, we demonstrate that the OTOC and Holevo information dynamics of the PXP model can be measured using the Rydberg-atom quantum simulators with current experimental technologies and numerically identify the measurable signatures using experimental parameters.

Deep quantum neural networks may provide a promising way to achieve a quantum learning advantage with noisy intermediate-scale quantum devices. Here, we use deep quantum feed-forward neural networks capable of universal quantum computation to represent the mixed states for open quantum many-body systems and introduce a variational method with quantum derivatives to solve the master equation for dynamics and stationary states. Owning to the special structure of the quantum networks, this approach enjoys a number of notable features, including an efficient quantum analog of the back-propagation algorithm, resource-saving reuse of hidden qubits, general applicability independent of dimensionality and entanglement properties, as well as the convenient implementation of symmetries. As proof-of-principle demonstrations, we apply this approach to both one-dimensional transverse field Ising and two-dimensional J_{1}-J_{2} models with dissipation, and show that it can efficiently capture their dynamics and stationary states with a desired accuracy.

For scalable quantum communication and networks, a key step is to realize a quantum repeater node that can efficiently connect different segments of atom-photon entanglement using quantum memories. We report a compact and hardware-efficient realization of a quantum repeater node using a single atomic ensemble for multicell quantum memories. A millisecond lifetime is achieved for individual memory cells after suppressing the magnetic-field-induced inhomogeneous broadening and the atomic-motion-induced spin-wave dephasing. Based on these long-lived memory cells, we achieve heralded asynchronous entanglement generation in two quantum repeater segments one after another and then an on-demand entanglement connection of these two repeater segments. As another application of the multicell atomic quantum memory, we further demonstrate storage and on-demand retrieval of heralded atomic spin-wave qubits by implementing a random access quantum memory with individual addressing capacity. This work provides a promising constituent for efficient realization of quantum repeaters for large-scale quantum networks.

Geometric phase gates are promising tools toward robust quantum computing owing to their robustness against certain control errors and decoherence. Here, we propose a multiqubit architecture with a nonadiabatic geometric phase gate scheme that is feasible in widely used superconducting qubit designs such as transmon and fluxonium. Through segmented microwave drive on multiple qubits coupled off-resonantly to a common resonator, the geometric phase gate is obtained from the qubit-state-dependent displacement of the resonator without fine-tuning the qubit frequencies. Fidelity above 99.99% is achieved in simulation under the available experimental parameters. Our scheme uses all-microwave control and only exploits the lowest qubit levels with long coherence time; thus it is desirable for experiments. Together with the single-qubit holonomic gates demonstrated in earlier experiments, our scheme can realize universal all-geometric quantum computing, and it also finds applications in quantum simulation with many-body interactions.

Quantum teleportation has found important applications in quantum technologies, but pushing it to macroscopic objects is challenging because of the fragility of quantum states. Here, the authors demonstrate teleportation of states from light beams to the vibrational states of a macroscopic diamond sample.

Heat generated as a result of the breakdown of an adiabatic process is one of the central concepts of thermodynamics. In isolated systems, the heat can be defined as an energy increase due to transitions between distinct energy levels. Across a second-order quantum phase transition (QPT), the heat is predicted theoretically to exhibit a power-law scaling, but it is a significant challenge for an experimental observation. In addition, it remains elusive whether a power-law scaling of heat can exist for a first-order QPT. Here we experimentally observe a power-law scaling of heat in a spinor condensate when a system is linearly driven from a polar phase to an antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase across a first-order QPT. We experimentally evaluate the heat generated during two non-equilibrium processes by probing the atom number on a hyperfine energy level. The experimentally measured scaling exponents agree well with our numerical simulation results. Our work therefore opens a new avenue to experimentally and theoretically exploring the properties of heat in non-equilibrium dynamics.

Modern theory of electric polarization is formulated by the Berry phase, which, when quantized, leads to topological phases of matter. Such a formulation has recently been extended to higher electric multipole moments, through the discovery of the so-called quadupole topological insulator. It has been established by a classical electromagnetic theory that in a two-dimensional material the quantized properties for the quadupole topological insulator should satisfy a basic relation. Here we discover a new type of quadrupole topological insulator (dubbed type-II) that violates this relation due to the breakdown of the correspondence that a Wannier band and an edge energy spectrum close their gaps simultaneously. We find that, similarly to the previously discovered (referred to as type-I) quadrupole topological insulator, the type-II hosts topologically protected corner states carrying fractional corner charges. However, the edge polarizations only occur at a pair of boundaries in the type-II insulating phase, leading to the violation of the classical constraint. We demonstrate that such new topological phenomena can appear from quench dynamics in non-equilibrium systems, which can be experimentally observed in ultracold atomic gases. We also propose an experimental scheme with electric circuits to realize such a new topological phase of matter. The existence of the new topological insulating phase means that new multipole topological insulators with distinct properties can exist in broader contexts beyond classical constraints.

Realization of long-distance quantum communication through the quantum repeater network requires a combination of some key elements, including a multiplexed quantum memory for storage of entanglement and a telecom photon for propagation of information through the fiber. Although impressive experimental advances have demonstrated the individual elements, combining these key capabilities together and realizing them in a single experimental system remains a significant challenge. Here, we report an experimental realization of long-distance entanglement between a multiplexed quantum memory with 49 individually accessible memory cells and a telecom photon after transmission in a 10-km optical fiber. Excitation of an atomic ensemble generates narrow-band polarization entanglement between a telecom photon of 1530-nm wavelength and another photon of 780-nm wavelength, which is then stored into a memory cell of a multiplexed atomic quantum memory and read out after a controllable delay. The entanglement is verified through quantum-state tomography after quantum storage in the atomic memory and fiber transmission of the telecom photon. This experiment demonstrates an important step towards realization of long-distance quantum communication networks.

Characterization of qubit couplings in many-body quantum systems is essential for benchmarking quantum computation and simulation. We propose a tomographic measurement scheme to determine all the coupling terms in a general many-body Hamiltonian with arbitrary long-range interactions, provided the energy density of the Hamiltonian remains finite. Different from quantum process tomography, our scheme is fully scalable with the number of qubits as the required rounds of measurements increase only linearly with the number of coupling terms in the Hamiltonian. The scheme makes use of synchronized dynamical decoupling pulses to simplify the many-body dynamics so that the unknown parameters in the Hamiltonian can be retrieved one by one. We simulate the performance of the scheme under the influence of various pulse errors and show that it is robust to typical noise and experimental imperfections.

We introduce a new class of quantum many-particle entangled states, called the Dicke squeezed (or DS) states, which can be used to improve the precision in quantum metrology beyond the standard quantum limit. We show that the enhancement in measurement precision is characterized by a single experimentally detectable parameter, called the Dicke squeezing ${{\xi }_{D}}$ , which also bounds the entanglement depth for this class of states. The measurement precision approaches the ultimate Heisenberg limit as ${{\xi }_{D}}$ attains the minimum in an ideal Dicke state. Compared with other entangled states, we show that the DS states are more robust to decoherence and give better measurement precision under typical experimental noise.

It was shown recently that entanglement of identical particles has a feature called dualism (Bose and Home 2013 Phys. Rev. Lett. http://dx.doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.110.265701 110 http://dx.doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.110.265701 ), which is fundamentally connected with quantum indistinguishability. Here we report an experiment that observes the entanglement duality for the first time with two identical photons, which manifest polarization entanglement when labeled by different paths or path entanglement when labeled by polarization states. By adjusting the mismatch in frequency or arrival time of the entangled photons, we tune the photon indistinguishability from the quantum to the classical limit and observe that the entanglement duality disappears under the emergence of classical distinguishability, confirming it as a characteristic feature of quantum indistinguishable particles.

We propose an experimental scheme to observe prethermalization and a dynamic phase transition in a one-dimensional XY spin chain with long-range interactions and inhomogeneous lattice spacing, which can be readily implemented with a recently developed trapped-ion quantum simulator. Local physical observables are found to relax to prethermal values at an intermediate timescale, followed by complete relaxation to thermal values at much longer time. The physical origin of prethermalization is shown to result from a non-trivial structure in the lower half of the energy spectrum. The dynamic behavior of the system is shown to cross different phases when the interaction range is continuously tuned, indicating the existence of a dynamic phase transition.

A collection of trapped atomic ions represents one of the most attractive platforms for the quantum simulation of interacting spin networks and quantum magnetism. Spin-dependent optical dipole forces applied to an ion crystal create long-range effective spin–spin interactions and allow the simulation of spin Hamiltonians that possess nontrivial phases and dynamics. Here we show how the appropriate design of laser fields can provide for arbitrary multidimensional spin–spin interaction graphs even for the case of a linear spatial array of ions. This scheme uses currently available trap technology and is scalable to levels where the classical methods of simulation are intractable.

We show that laser-assisted hopping of hard-core bosons in a square optical lattice can be described by an antiferromagnetic J _1 – J _2 XY model with a tunable ratio of J _2 / J _1 . We numerically investigated the phase diagram of the J _1 – J _2 XY model using both the tensor network algorithm for infinite systems and the exact diagonalization for small clusters and found strong evidence that in the intermediate region around J _2 / J _1 ∼ 0.5, there is a spin liquid phase with vanishing magnetization and valence bond orders, which interconnects the Néel state on the J _2 ≪ J _1 side and the stripe antiferromagnetic phase on the J _2 ≫ J _1 side. This finding opens up the possibility of studying the exotic spin liquid phase in a realistic experimental system using ultracold atoms in an optical lattice.

Learning the Hamiltonian of a quantum system is indispensable for prediction of the system dynamics and realization of high fidelity quantum gates. However, it is a significant challenge to efficiently characterize the Hamiltonian which has a Hilbert space dimension exponentially growing with the system size. Here, we develop and implement an adaptive method to learn the effective Hamiltonian of an 11-qubit quantum system consisting of one electron spin and ten nuclear spins associated with a single nitrogen-vacancy center in a diamond. We validate the estimated Hamiltonian by designing universal quantum gates based on the learnt Hamiltonian and implementing these gates in the experiment. Our experimental result demonstrates a well-characterized 11-qubit quantum spin register with the ability to test quantum algorithms, and shows our Hamiltonian learning method as a useful tool for characterizing the Hamiltonian of the nodes in a quantum network with solid-state spin qubits. We report experimental realization of a quantum version of Maxwell’s demon using solid state spins where the information acquiring and feedback operations by the demon are achieved through conditional quantum gates. A unique feature of this implementation is that the demon can start in a quantum superposition state or in an entangled state with an ancilla observer. Through quantum state tomography, we measure the entropy in the system, demon, and the ancilla, showing the influence of coherence and entanglement on the result. A quantum implementation of Maxwell’s demon adds more controllability to this paradoxical thermal machine and may find applications in quantum thermodynamics involving microscopic systems. Knots and links are fascinating and intricate topological objects. Their influence spans from DNA and molecular chemistry to vortices in superfluid helium, defects in liquid crystals and cosmic strings in the early universe. Here we find that knotted structures also exist in a peculiar class of three-dimensional topological insulators—the Hopf insulators. In particular, we demonstrate that the momentum-space spin textures of Hopf insulators are twisted in a nontrivial way, which implies the presence of various knot and link structures. We further illustrate that the knots and nontrivial spin textures can be probed via standard time-of-flight images in cold atoms as preimage contours of spin orientations in stereographic coordinates. The extracted Hopf invariants, knots, and links are validated to be robust to typical experimental imperfections. Our work establishes the existence of knotted structures in Hopf insulators, which may have potential applications in spintronics and quantum information processing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hopf insulators are intriguing three-dimensional topological insulators characterized by an integer topological invariant. They originate from the mathematical theory of Hopf fibration and epitomize the deep connection between knot theory and topological phases of matter, which distinguishes them from other classes of topological insulators. Here, we implement a model Hamiltonian for Hopf insulators in a solid-state quantum simulator and report the first experimental observation of their topological properties, including nontrivial topological links associated with the Hopf fibration and the integer-valued topological invariant obtained from a direct tomographic measurement. Our observation of topological links and Hopf fibration in a quantum simulator opens the door to probe rich topological properties of Hopf insulators in experiments. The quantum simulation and probing methods are also applicable to the study of other intricate three-dimensional topological model Hamiltonians. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
