International audience; This paper presents a new topology of Hybrid Excited Flux-Switching Machine (HE FSM) with excitation coils located in stator slots (or inner DC windings). After describing the three phase structure to be investigated, the working principle is discussed and main electromagnetic performances are simulated by Finite Element (FE) Analysis. It is demonstrated that the airgap field can be easily controlled which is interesting for variablespeed applications. Finally, a prototype having 12 stator poles and different rotor teeth number (10 or 14) was built. Experiments were performed validating FE simulations and the operation principle. Finally, the thermal behavior of the prototype machine is investigated through experiments. It is shown that up to 12000rpm, the thermal stabilization is achieved, making this topology an excellent candidate for high-speed applications.

International audience; A general solution of the magnetic field in the airgap of Conventional and Alternate Field-Excited Switched-Flux (FE-SF) machines is proposed in this paper. The analytical model is based on subdomain method. It involves solution of governing field equations in a doubly-slotted airgap using the variable separation method. The complete model is derived and described in a general manner so that it can be easily extended to unconventional FE-SF topologies. By means of example, analytical predictions of airgap field are extensively compared and validated using 2D FE results. FE simulations were performed on a 24-10 classical FE-SF structure and also, on a novel 18-11 FE-SF machine with additional spacer teeth.

International audience; This article reports new results about the magnetic loss in Soft Magnetic Composites excited with rotating field. Indeed, these materials are very promising in electrical engineering applications, such as new topologies of electrical machines in which multidimensional induction loci are ubiquitous. Therefore, it has been provided an experimental characterization of a commercial SMC sample devoted to electrical machine applications, up to the kilohertz range, under alternating and circular induction loci. To this end, an experimental system has been designed and optimized for this kind of loss measurements, and the results have been subjected to the loss separation procedure, focusing the attention on the ratio between circular and alternating loss. The ratio between the excess loss obtained under rotating and alternating inductions of same peak amplitude has been found almost frequency independent. This result is then applied to successfully predict the loss under more complex induction loci, such as the elliptical case.

International audience; The electromagnetic performances for two current distribution methods (classical and non-classical) of a 3-phase, 24 stator slots and 16 rotor poles Switching Reluctance Machine (SRM) were compared. The three phases were excited in sinusoidal current mode. The Finite Element Model was used to predict the average torque, the total flux of each phase, the torque ripple, the self and the mutual-inductance of each phase. After the computation, it is shown that the machine with non-classical current distribution has more average torque than the machine with classical current distribution, especially at high current density. Experimental tests have been realized, and a good agreement between the experimental and numerical (FE) results was observed.

International audience; The aim of this paper is to compare the experimental performances of a new hybrid flux switching synchronous machine built with two types of lamination materials (3% silicon iron steel M330-50 and NO-20). This machine uses the flux switching principle where all the active parts are located on the stator (armature windings and permanent magnets). However DC excitation coils where added in the stator and gives a supplementary degree of freedom used control the total excitation flux. The rotor is only a salient passive rotor and can be robust and made with a low cost technology. This new machine can be supplied by means of a traditional three-phase voltage converter or can be associated with a diode rectifier.

International audience; The aim of this study is to evaluate the field flux in a small electronically commutated single-phase permanent magnet reluctance motor. Its structure is inherently three-dimensional. An analytical model is built so that an analysis of parameters can be easily conducted. With a first simple model, an optimum is found for the magnets' length that may permit to use disk-magnet technology. Yet, the value of the field flux lacks accuracy. In order to locate the main leakage fluxes, the finite element analysis is used on a bidimensional equivalent geometry. A second and satisfying analytical model is determined. Experimental results confirm the effectiveness of the model to fulfil analysis of parameters.

- Abstract
Loss data available in literature on laminated magnetic materials excited by alternating induction are often limited to rather low frequencies, (e.g., below 1 kHz). This is far below the frequencies experienced by materials used in high speed electrical machines. In this work, an appropriate measurement setup is used to evaluate losses in 0.35 mm thick iron silicon NO lamination up to an alternating peak induction of 1 T at a frequency of 10 kHz. In these conditions the capacitive effects are relevant on the B-coil and the H-coil when standard Epstein frame is used and might affect the measurements. A method to avoid this problem is proposed, based on a comparison between three characterization systems: a new single sheet tester that we use as a reference system, a conventional Epstein frame with 700 turns and a second Epstein frame with 200 turns dedicated to high-frequency. In the first part of the study we present an assessment of the limits of each system. An empirical correction factor is introduced to obtain the true loss value from measurement using the Epstein frame (700 turns from DC to 400 Hz and 200 turns from 400 Hz to 10 kHz). Finally, a comparison between two non-oriented FeSi of different quality and different thicknesses (0.35 mm and 0.2 mm) is presented in a wide range of frequencies (from DC to 10 kHz). Based on the loss separation theory, the skin effect on the two samples has been highlighted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The magnetic materials used in embedded applications need characterization and modeling in the kilohertz range. This problem is well addressed under conventional alternating induction, but with rotational and two-dimensional induction loci, which are ubiquitous in electrical machines, there is lack of results, because of the difficult task of reaching such high frequencies at technically interesting induction values with the conventional laboratory test benches. To overcome this difficulty, a novel three phase magnetizer has been designed, exploiting 3D finite element calculations, and applied in the lab. This device permits one to measure magnetization curve and losses in soft magnetic steel sheets and soft magnetic composites under alternating and circular induction up to about 5 kHz. We provide a few significant examples of loss measurements in 0.20 mm thick Fe-Si and Fe50Co50 laminations, and in soft magnetic composites. These measurements bring to light the role of skin effect under one- and two-dimensional fields. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper describes the design and the placement of piezoelectric actuators on switched reluctance motors by means of a genetic algorithm (nondominated sorting genetic algorithm II) for the purpose of reducing stator vibrations. Two distinct approaches are presented: one energy-related and the other based on a minimization of the resultant displacement. These methods lead to design and placement strategy for the piezoelectric actuators. A number of optimal actuators obtained using these kinds of approaches is also compared with mechanical finite-element simulations. At last, a solution is achieved in order to validate optimal placement using positive position feedback active filtering. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, the suitability of a class of electric machines for vehicle traction applications is discussed. These machines, which are known as hybrid excitation synchronous machines, combine permanent-magnet (PM) excitation with wound field excitation. The goal behind the principle of hybrid excitation is to combine the advantages of PM excited machines and wound field synchronous machines. It is shown that these machines have good flux weakening capability compared with PM machines, and that they constitute an energy-efficient solution for vehicle propulsion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper deals with the control of a hybrid excitation synchronous generator which is used to supply an isolated grid for aircraft applications. This grid is supposed to be a 270-V dc bus. Thus, a rectifier is required between the machine and the dc bus. A diode rectifier is preferred here due to its great reliability and because it is also a low-cost solution. A controller is then proposed in order to regulate the output dc voltage of the generator. It is finally validated by simulations and experimental results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
