Given that subtle differences in information framing can have meaningful effects on behavior, behavioral science research highlights a pressing question: Is it more effective to frame COVID-19 health messages in terms of potential losses (e.g., "If you do not practice these steps, you can endanger yourself and others") or potential gains (e.g., "If you practice these steps, you can protect yourself and others")? Collecting data in 48 languages from 15,929 participants in 84 countries, we experimentally tested the effects of message framing on COVID-19-related judgments, intentions, and feelings. Loss- (vs. gain-) framed messages increased self-reported anxiety among participants cross-nationally with little-to-no impact on policy attitudes, behavioral intentions, or information seeking relevant to pandemic risks. These results were consistent across 84 countries, three variations of the message framing wording, and 560 data processing and analytic choices. Thus, results provide an empirical answer to a global communication question and highlight the emotional toll of loss-framed messages. Critically, this work demonstrates the importance of considering unintended affective consequences when evaluating nudge-style interventions. 26 p.

In modern industry, among the methods of surface treatment is widely used end-milling. Under certain conditions of its use there are self-oscillations, which significantly affect the quality of the treated surface. Various techniques are used to study this influence, in particular, the comparison of the basic fragments of the oscillogram obtained by cutting with the treated surface. It is established that it is formed by the first and last wave of self-oscillations during up and down milling, respectively. But depending on the direction of feed step and the height of the waviness on it have different meanings. Therefore, it is important to determine the reasons that lead to this result. This paper considers the features of each direction of supply that affect the formation of the treated surface. When superimposing fragments of the oscillogram obtained by up milling, it is seen that the deviation of the first wave of self-oscillations from the position of elastic equilibrium starts from the point of incision of the cutter in the part. Therefore, the pitch of the wave on the treated surface depends on the feed and the number of cuts required to cut the first protrusion on the cutting surface. The paper presents a formula for determining the length of the base of this speech. When using it, the discrepancy between the calculated wave step on the treated surface and the measured one does not exceed 4%. In the case of down milling, the last section with waviness on the cutting surface, which is cut and affects the shape of the treated surface, has a shorter base length than the opposite. This is the first reason why the pitch of the wave in the down milling is smaller than in the up. Also at formation of wave on the processed surface at down milling the feature in the form of shift on a phase of waves of self oscillations on each following cut is observed. This increases the cutting time and the length of the cutting surface. Each subsequent forming depression is shifted towards the treated surface with a decrease in its deviation from the position of elastic equilibrium. However, the phase shift direction is opposite to the feed direction. This is the second reason why the pitch of the wave on the machined surface after the down milling is less than after the up. The calculation of the step of the wave of the treated surface after the down milling according to the results of the study of fragments of oscillograms shows that the error does not exceed 12% compared to the measured one. У сучасній промисловості серед методів обробки поверхонь широко застосовується кінцеве фрезерування. За певних умов його використання виникають автоколивання, які істотно впливають на якість обробленої поверхні. Для дослідження цього впливу використовуються різні методики, зокрема, зіставлення отриманих при різанні базових фрагментів осцилограми з обробленою поверхнею. Встановлено, що вона формується першою та останньою хвилею автоколивань при зустрічному та попутному фрезеруванні відповідно. Але в залежності від напрямку подачі крок та висота хвилястості на ній мають різні значення. Тому актуальним є визначення причин, що призводять до такого результату. У цій роботі розглядаються особливості кожного напряму подачі, що впливають на формування обробленої поверхні. При накладанні фрагментів осцилограми, отриманих при зустрічному фрезеруванні, видно, що відхилення першої хвилі автоколивань від положення пружної рівноваги починається від точки врізання фрези в деталь. Тому крок хвилястості на обробленій поверхні залежить від подачі та кількості різів, необхідних для зрізання першого виступу на поверхні різання. У роботі наведено формулу для визначення довжини основи цього виступу. При її використанні розбіжність між розрахованим кроком хвилястості на обробленій поверхні та виміряним не перевищує 4%. При попутному фрезеруванні остання ділянка з хвилястістю на поверхні різання, що зрізається та впливає на форму обробленої поверхні, має меншу довжину основи, ніж при зустрічному. Це перша причина, чому крок хвилястості при попутному фрезеруванні менший, ніж при зустрічному. Також при формуванні хвилястості на обробленій поверхні при попутному фрезеруванні спостерігається особливість у вигляді зсуву по фазі хвиль автоколивань на кожному наступному різі. Це призводить до збільшення часу різання та довжини поверхні різання. Кожна наступна формоутворююча западина зміщується у бік обробленої поверхні із зменшенням її відхилення від положення пружної рівноваги. Однак напрямок зсуву по фазі протилежний напрямку подачі. Це друга причина, через яку крок хвилястості на обробленій поверхні після попутного фрезерування менший, ніж після зустрічного. Розрахунок кроку хвилястості обробленої поверхні після попутного фрезерування за результатами дослідження фрагментів осцилограм показує, що похибка не перевищує 12% порівняно з виміряним.

- Abstract
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Psychological Science Accelerator coordinated three large-scale psychological studies to examine the effects of loss-gain framing, cognitive reappraisals, and autonomy framing manipulations on behavioral intentions and affective measures. The data collected (April to October 2020) included specific measures for each experimental study, a general questionnaire examining health prevention behaviors and COVID-19 experience, geographical and cultural context characterization, and demographic information for each participant. Each participant started the study with the same general questions and then was randomized to complete either one longer experiment or two shorter experiments. Data were provided by 73,223 participants with varying completion rates. Participants completed the survey from 111 geopolitical regions in 44 unique languages/dialects. The anonymized dataset described here is provided in both raw and processed formats to facilitate re-use and further analyses. The dataset offers secondary analytic opportunities to explore coping, framing, and self-determination across a diverse, global sample obtained at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, which can be merged with other time-sampled or geographic data., (© 2023. - Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has increased negative emotions and decreased positive emotions globally. Left unchecked, these emotional changes might have a wide array of adverse impacts. To reduce negative emotions and increase positive emotions, we tested the effectiveness of reappraisal, an emotion-regulation strategy that modifies how one thinks about a situation. Participants from 87 countries and regions (n = 21,644) were randomly assigned to one of two brief reappraisal interventions (reconstrual or repurposing) or one of two control conditions (active or passive). Results revealed that both reappraisal interventions (vesus both control conditions) consistently reduced negative emotions and increased positive emotions across different measures. Reconstrual and repurposing interventions had similar effects. Importantly, planned exploratory analyses indicated that reappraisal interventions did not reduce intentions to practice preventive health behaviours. The findings demonstrate the viability of creating scalable, low-cost interventions for use around the world. A significant difference in behavior of Zr
IV ions during their cocrystallization and sorption binding to hydroxyapatite (HAP) is demonstrated. When the concentration of doping ions exceeds 10−4 mol L−1 , a chemical reaction with the formation of amorphous zirconium phosphate and complete dissolution of the sorbent occurs in the system rather than sorption. According to the X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) data, a similar reaction is also possible at lower concentrations of zirconium ions. The effect of doping ions on the morphology and structure of HAP is significantly lower for the cocrystallization introduction of Zr. In addition, according to high-resolution TEM data, doping ions can uniformly be distributed over the carrier surface or volume. Therefore, this method of binding method can be recommended for the preparation of a target HAP-Zr complex. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

- Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic (and its aftermath) highlights a critical need to communicate health information effectively to the global public. Given that subtle differences in information framing can have meaningful effects on behavior, behavioral science research highlights a pressing question: Is it more effective to frame COVID-19 health messages in terms of potential losses (e.g., "If you do not practice these steps, you can endanger yourself and others") or potential gains (e.g., "If you practice these steps, you can protect yourself and others")? Collecting data in 48 languages from 15,929 participants in 84 countries, we experimentally tested the effects of message framing on COVID-19-related judgments, intentions, and feelings. Loss- (vs. gain-) framed messages increased self-reported anxiety among participants cross-nationally with little-to-no impact on policy attitudes, behavioral intentions, or information seeking relevant to pandemic risks. These results were consistent across 84 countries, three variations of the message framing wording, and 560 data processing and analytic choices. Thus, results provide an empirical answer to a global communication question and highlight the emotional toll of loss-framed messages. - Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has increased negative emotions and decreased positive emotions globally. Left unchecked, these emotional changes might have a wide array of adverse impacts. To reduce negative emotions and increase positive emotions, we tested the effectiveness of reappraisal, an emotion-regulation strategy that modifies how one thinks about a situation. Participants from 87 countries and regions (n = 21,644) were randomly assigned to one of two brief reappraisal interventions (reconstrual or repurposing) or one of two control conditions (active or passive). Results revealed that both reappraisal interventions (vesus both control conditions) consistently reduced negative emotions and increased positive emotions across different measures. Reconstrual and repurposing interventions had similar effects. Importantly, planned exploratory analyses indicated that reappraisal interventions did not reduce intentions to practice preventive health behaviours. The findings demonstrate the viability of creating scalable, low-cost interventions for use around the world. According to one hypothesis, Parkinson's disease pathogenesis is largely caused by dopamine catabolism that is catalyzed on mitochondrial membranes by monoamine oxidase. Reactive oxygen species are formed as a byproduct of these reactions, which can lead to mitochondrial damage followed by cell degeneration and death. In this study, we investigated the effects of administration of the mitochondrial antioxidant SkQ1 on biochemical, immunohistochemical, and behavioral parameters in a Parkinson-like condition caused by protoxin MPTP injections in C57BL/6 mice. SkQ1 administration increased dopamine quantity and decreased signs of sensory-motor deficiency as well as destruction of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra and ventral tegmental area in mice with the Parkinson-like condition. Mature T cells bearing αβ T cell receptors react with foreign antigens bound to alleles of major histocompatibility complex proteins (MHC) that they were exposed to during their development in the thymus, a phenomenon known as positive selection. The structural basis for positive selection has long been debated. Here, using mice expressing one of two different T cell receptor β chains and various MHC alleles, we show that positive selection-induced MHC bias of T cell receptors is affected both by the germline encoded elements of the T cell receptor α and β chain and, surprisingly, dramatically affected by the non germ line encoded portions of CDR3 of the T cell receptor α chain. Thus, in addition to determining specificity for antigen, the non germline encoded elements of T cell receptors may help the proteins cope with the extremely polymorphic nature of major histocompatibility complex products within the species.

The influence of a course of medical treatment with the Semax nootropic peptide (50 and 200 μg/kg) on alcohol motivation and general behavior was studied in rats preliminarily alcoholized over six months. Semax was also included in the scheme of complex therapy of human alcohol dependence in clinical practice. Experiments with rats showed an increase in the locomotor and exploratory activity of rats and a decrease in the degree of depressive-like components. This effect compensated the behavioral changes observed in the control group exposed to alcohol deprivation. At the same time, the behavior of test groups under anxiogenic conditions showed increased anxiety. Semax in a dose of 200 μg/kg caused a significant increase in alcohol motivation, whereas its lower dose induced no proalcohol effect. Clinical trials demonstrated the safety (the absence of side effects and fairly high tolerance) of Semax in the course of alleviating the acute withdrawal syndrome and its efficacy for the recovery of mnestic functions (which was similar to the efficacy of Pyracetam). Semax did not change the frequency of cases of pathological craving for alcohol, but increased the overall intensity of behavioral reactions, which made the craving for alcohol stronger. These results allowed determination of safe course doses of Semax (to 50 μg/kg) under conditions of chronic alcoholization and inclusion of this nootropic agent in a scheme of complex therapy for patients with alcohol dependence. Staphylococcus aureus stands out as one of the most virulent pathogens in the genus Staphylococcus. This characteristic is due to its ability to produce a wide variety of staphylococcal enterotoxins (SEs) and exotoxins, which in turn can cause staphylococcal food poisoning (SFP), clinical syndromes such as skin infections, inflammation, pneumonia, and sepsis, in addition to being associated with the development of inflammation in the mammary glands of dairy cattle, which results in chronic mastitis and cell necrosis. SEs are small globular proteins that combine superantigenic and emetic activities; they are resistant to heat, low temperatures, and proteolytic enzymes and are tolerant to a wide pH range. More than 24 SE genes have been well described (SEA-SEE, SEG, SEH, SEI, SEJ, SElK, SElL, SElM, SElN, SElO, SElP, SElQ, SElR, SElS, SElT, SElU, SElV, SElW, SElX, SElY, and SElZ), being a part of different SFP outbreaks, clinical cases, and isolated animal strains. In recent years, new genes (sel26, sel27, sel28, sel31, sel32, and sel33) from SEs have been described, as well as two variants (seh-2p and ses-3p) resulting in a total of thirty-three genes from Ses, including the nine variants that are still in the process of genetic and molecular structure evaluation. SEs are encoded by genes that are located in mobile genetic elements, such as plasmids, prophages, pathogenicity islands, and the enterotoxin gene cluster (egc), and housed in the genomic island of S. aureus. Both classical SEs and SE-like toxins (SEls) share phylogenetic relationships, structure, function, and sequence homology, which are characteristics for the production of new SEs through recombination processes. Due to the epidemiological importance of SEs, their rapid assessment and detection have been crucial for food security and public health; for this reason, different methods of identification of SEs have been developed, such as liquid chromatography coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS), molecular methods, and whole-genome sequencing; providing the diagnosis of SEs and a better understanding of the occurrence, spread, and eradication of SEs. This review provides scientific information on the enterotoxins produced by S. aureus, such as structural characteristics, genetic organization, regulatory mechanisms, superantigen activity, mechanisms of action used by SEs at the time of interaction with the immune system, methods of detection of SEs, and recent biocontrol techniques used in food. - Abstract
The life and death of T cells is controlled to a large extent by the relative amounts of Bcl-2-related proteins they contain. The antiapoptotic protein Bcl-2 and the proapoptotic protein Bim are particularly important in this process with the amount of Bcl-2 per cell dropping by about one-half when T cells prepare to die. In this study we show that Bcl-2 and Bim each control the expression of the other. Absence of Bim leads to a drop in the amount of intracellular Bcl-2 protein, while having no effect on the amounts of mRNA for Bcl-2. Conversely, high amounts of Bcl-2 per cell allow high amounts of Bim, although in this case the effect involves increases in Bim mRNA. These mutual effects occur even if Bcl-2 is induced acutely. Thus these two proteins control the expression of the other, at either the protein or mRNA level.

Phase synchronization serves as an effective method for analyzing the synchronization of electroencephalogram (EEG) signals among brain regions and the dynamic changes of the brain. The purpose of this paper is to study the construction of the functional brain network (FBN) based on phase synchronization, with a special focus on neural processes related to human balance regulation. This paper designed four balance paradigms of different difficulty by blocking vision or proprioception and collected 19-channel EEG signals. Firstly, the EEG sequences are segmented by sliding windows. The phase-locking value (PLV) of core node pairs serves as the phase-screening index to extract the valid data segments, which are recombined into new EEG sequences. Subsequently, the multichannel weighted phase lag index (wPLI) is calculated based on the new EEG sequences to construct the FBN. The experimental results show that due to the randomness of the time points of body balance adjustment, the degree of phase synchronization of the datasets screened by PLV is more obvious, improving the effective information expression of the subsequent EEG data segments. The FBN topological structures of the wPLI show that the connectivity of various brain regions changes structurally as the difficulty of human balance tasks increases. The frontal lobe area is the core brain region for information integration. When vision or proprioception is obstructed, the EEG synchronization level of the corresponding occipital lobe area or central area decreases. The synchronization level of the frontal lobe area increases, which strengthens the synergistic effect among the brain regions and compensates for the imbalanced response caused by the lack of sensory information. These results show the brain regional characteristics of the process of human balance regulation under different balance paradigms, providing new insights into endogenous neural mechanisms of standing balance and methods of constructing brain networks. List intersection plays a pivotal role in various domains such as search engines, database systems, and social networks. Efficient indexes and query strategies can significantly enhance the efficiency of list intersection. Existing inverted index-based algorithms fail to utilize the length information of documents and require excessive list intersections, resulting in lower efficiency. To address this issue, in this paper, we propose the LDRpV (Length-based Document Reordering plus Verification) algorithm. LDRpV filters out documents that are unlikely to satisfy the intersection results by reordering documents based on their length, thereby reducing the number of candidates. Additionally, to minimize the number of list intersection operations, an intersection and verification strategy is designed, where only the first m lists are intersected, and the resulting candidate set is directly verified. This approach effectively improves the efficiency of list intersection. Experimental results on four real datasets demonstrate that LDRpV can achieve a maximum efficiency improvement of 46.69% compared to the most competitive counterparts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The introduction of antigen into animals causes antigen-specific T cells to divide and then die. Activated T cell death requires either of the death effector molecules, Bak or Bax. When T cells die, Bak and Bax change their conformations, a phenomenon that is thought to be required for Bak or Bax to drive cell death. Here we show that Bak changes conformation before activated T cells die, as detected by an antibody specific for a peptide near the NH2 terminus of Bak, but Bax does not change its shape markedly until after the cells are dead, as detected by an antibody specific for a peptide near the NH2 terminus of Bax. This latter finding is also true in activated T cells that lack Bak and are therefore dependent on Bax to die. This result suggests that Bax does not have to adopt its final, completely unfolded form until after the cells are dead.

This multicenter, double-blind study evaluated efficacy and safety of the vasopeptidase inhibitor omapatrilat, which simultaneously inhibits neutral endopeptidase and angiotensin converting enzyme, when given in conjunction with hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) to subjects nonresponsive to HCTZ alone. The study enrolled 657 subjects with mild to severe hypertension. After a 2-week placebo lead-in period and a 4-week HCTZ phase, 274 subjects were randomized to receive omapatrilat (10 or 20 mg, electively titrated to 20 or 40 mg, respectively, at week 4 if seated diastolic blood pressure [SeDBP] was > or =90 mm Hg) or matching placebo in addition to 25 mg of HCTZ as continuing therapy. The primary outcome measure was change in SeDBP from baseline to week 8. At week 8, placebo plus HCTZ-adjusted additional reductions in SeDBP in the omapatrilat 10/20 mg and 20/40 mg treatment groups (4 and 5 mm Hg, respectively) were significant (P < .001), as were changes in seated systolic blood pressure in both omapatrilat-treated groups (7 and 10 mm Hg, respectively; P < .001). Seated diastolic blood pressure was normalized (<90 mm Hg) in 38% of subjects in the placebo group compared to 59% and 64% of subjects in the omapatrilat groups (P < or = .008). Adverse events, serious adverse events, and discontinuations attributed to adverse events were infrequent. There were no clinically relevant changes in serum creatinine or potassium. Omapatrilat was effective and well tolerated when added to HCTZ in subjects whose blood pressure was not controlled with HCTZ alone.

We tested the ability of CD4+ T cells, selected in the thymus by reaction with class II protein bound to a single peptide, to react with the same class II protein bound to other peptides. The T cells reacted with all peptides tested, including one that was quite unlike the selecting peptide in T cell receptor binding residues. The receptors on class II/peptide-reactive T cells from class II/single peptide mice were similar but not identical to some of those from normal animals. Thus, class II bound to a single peptide selects a subset of T cells that is related to that selected by class II bound to many peptides.

- Abstract
Mice expressing the minor lymphocyte stimulation antigens, Mls-1a, -2a, or -3a, singly on the B10.BR background have been generated. Mls phenotypes correlate with the integration of mouse mammary tumor viruses (MTV) in the mouse genome. The open reading frames within the 3' long terminal repeats of the integrated MTVs 1, 3, 6, and 13 encode V beta 3-specific superantigens. Sequence data for these viral superantigens is presented, indicating that it is the COOH-terminal portion of the viral superantigen that interacts with the T cell receptor V beta element.

Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is a common pathogen that can cause many human diseases, such as skin infection, food poisoning, endocarditis, and sepsis. These diseases can be minor infections or life-threatening, requiring complex medical management resulting in substantial healthcare costs. Meanwhile, as the critically ignored "organ," the intestinal microbiome greatly impacts physiological health, not only in gastrointestinal diseases but also in disorders beyond the gut. However, the correlation between S. aureus infection and intestinal microbial homeostasis is largely unknown. Here, we summarized the recent progress in understanding S. aureus infections and their interactions with the microbiome in the intestine. These summarizations will help us understand the mechanisms behind these infections and crosstalk and the challenges we are facing now, which could contribute to preventing S. aureus infections, effective treatment investigation, and vaccine development. The temporal distribution of precipitation is of great importance in water availability and the hydrological cycle. Existing studies, directly comparing observed and simulated precipitation amount and intensity over different temporal intervals, show that reanalyses overestimate precipitation frequency and underestimate precipitation intensity, and therefore cannot characterize extreme precipitations. In this study, relative values of precipitation (i.e., the cumulative fractions of precipitation on different percentiles of wettest hours or days to the annual total) were used to evaluate ERA5 over China during the warm seasons of from 1979 to 2015. We found that ERA5 well reproduced the relative values of daily precipitation to the annual total, although hourly results were less satisfied. The cumulative fractions at the hourly time scale at the 99th, 95th, and 90th percentiles were 15.2% ± 3.4%, 38.7% ± 6.6%, and 54.5% ± 7.4% for the gauge observations, and 9.0% ± 1.7%, 27.2% ± 4.0%, and 41.5% ± 5.0% for ERA5, respectively. ERA5 had excellent agreement with gauge observations at daily time scales: gauge observations were 13.0% ± 3.4%, 32.1% ± 5.1%, and 47.6% ± 5.7%, compared to 11.5% ± 3.7%, 30.7% ± 7.0%, and 46.0% ± 8.8% for ERA5, respectively. This difference was mainly due to the high frequency of hourly precipitation in the reanalyses, which were cancelled out at the daily scale. Gauge observations at the hourly scale showed an increase cumulative fraction at the 99th, 95th, and 90th percentiles (0.07% ± 0.03% decade−1, 0.15% ± 0.03% decade−1, and 0.17% ± 0.03% decade−1, respectively) from 1979 to 2015, but did not show an obvious trend at the daily scale. These tendencies were underestimated at the hourly scale but overestimated at the daily scale in ERA5. The results helped us to characterize the temporal distributions and variations of precipitation, and to deepen our understanding of hydrological processes and reanalyses performance.
