Detailed source process of the 2000 November 15 Lake Van (eastern Turkey) earthquake ( Mw= 5.6) was retrieved using the method of Kikuchi & Kanamori for source inversion of complex body waveforms. The event has been reported by USGS as a deep (67 km) subcrustal earthquake resulting from a rupture on a normal fault beneath the Bitlis Suture zone where continental collision is in action between the Arabian and Eurasian plates. However, our source model based on the analysis of complex body-waveforms suggests that the earthquake is a shallow crustal event comprised of two subevents on a predominantly reverse fault at depths of 12.5 and 15 km with a time interval of about 18 s. The seismic moment of the second subevent ( Mo= 1.6 × 1017 Nm; strike = 76°, dip = 55° and rake = 120°) is larger than the first subevent ( Mo= 1.0 × 1017 Nm; strike = 87°, dip = 62° and rake = 110°). Visual inspection of the strong ground motion records and waveform inversion analysis of the near-field records from four broad-band stations confirm the occurrence of the two subevents at shallow depths. We examined whether or not the observed complex waveforms of the main shock can be modelled in terms of a single point source embedded at an intermediate depth, and the result turned out to be further evidence for the multiple rupture. The plausibility of the focal depths and mechanisms of the two subevents was also examined by retrieving the source parameters of 14 aftershocks from near-field waveform data. Most of the aftershocks were relocated at depths around 15 km, which agrees with the shallow main shock. In addition, the analysis of near-field waveform data indicates subcrustal earthquake activity neither in the source region of the Lake Van earthquake nor in the Turkey–Iran border region. In the Turkey–Iran border region, an event on 1999 February 19 was reported to have taken place at a depth of 66 km (USGS) and 77 km (ISC), which also conflicts with our focal depth (18 km) determined through CMT inversion analysis of the broad-band records at the station GNI. The effect of the properties of photographic materials on the preparation of gold clus-ters in a gelatin layer using a photographic film was examined. The cluster are formed by reducing a gold(I) thiocyanate complex solution on latent image specks in emulsion grains. Gold clusters are marked as a non-linear optical material, and it was necessary for this purpose to condense the gold clusters in the layer. This was attempted by two methods. The first was to increase the emulsion grains in the layer, and the second was to increase the number of latent image specks on a grain. An ultrafine grain emulsion was applied for the former, while a high-intensity exposure and chemically sensitized emulsions were used to induce the dispersion of latent image specks for the latter. The characteristics of the clusters prepared from those emulsions were compared by absorption spectrum and size distribution. Both methods increased the plasmon absorption due to the gold clusters. The size of the clusters was similar, while absorbance increased with the sulphur-sensitization level. These results suggested that both were effective in condensing the gold clusters in the layer. Abstract: A new method to correct the emulsion deformation, mainly produced in the development process, is developed to recover the high accuracy of nuclear emulsion as a tracking device. The method is based on a precise photomask and a careful treatment of the emulsion films. A position measurement accuracy of is obtained over an area of 5cm×7cm. The method allows to measure positions of track segments with submicron accuracy in an ECC brick with as few as 10 reference tracks for alignment. Such a performance can be important for hybrid emulsion experiments at underground laboratories where only a small number of reference tracks for alignment are available. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The R&D project to study nuclear fragmentation using emulsion in attempt to improve the accuracy of dose calculation in carbon ion radiotherapy has been carried out at NIRS-HIMAC since 2003. Based on the developed techniques, we are accumulating experimental data of fragmentation reactions for various beams and target combinations. In this program we are also developing the practical application of hybrid apparatus of emulsion and CR-39 and performing basic study of gold deposition development in order to improve measurement of ionization. Background: Cancer immunotherapy aims to unleash the immune system's potential against cancer cells, providing sustained relief for tumors responsive to immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs). While promising in gastric cancer (GC) trials, the efficacy of ICIs diminishes in the context of peritoneal dissemination. Our objective is to identify strategies to enhance the impact of ICI treatment specifically for cases involving peritoneal dissemination in GC., Methods: The therapeutic efficacy of anti-PD1, CTLA4 treatment alone, or in combination was assessed using the YTN16 peritoneal dissemination tumor model. Peritoneum and peritoneal exudate cells were collected for subsequent analysis. Immunohistochemical staining, flow cytometry, and bulk RNA-sequence analyses were conducted to evaluate the tumor microenvironment (TME). A Janus kinase inhibitor (JAKi) was introduced based on the pathway analysis results., Results: Anti-PD1 and anti-CTLA4 combination treatment (dual ICI treatment) demonstrated therapeutic efficacy in certain mice, primarily mediated by CD8 + T cells. However, in mice resistant to dual ICI treatment, even with CD8 + T cell infiltration, most of the T cells exhibited an exhaustion phenotype. Notably, resistant tumors displayed abnormal activation of the Janus Kinase-Signal Transducer and Activator of Transcription (JAK-STAT) pathway compared to the untreated group, with observed infiltration of macrophages, neutrophils, and Tregs in the TME. The concurrent administration of JAKi rescued CD8 + T cells function and reshaped the immunosuppressive TME, resulting in enhanced efficacy of the dual ICI treatment., Conclusion: Dual ICI treatment exerts its anti-tumor effects by increasing tumor-specific CD8 + T cell infiltration, and the addition of JAKi further improves ICI resistance by reshaping the immunosuppressive TME., (© 2024. The smallest subnanocluster models of platinum colloid (Pt n ) are supposed to diffuse in aqueous media in order to examine their behaviors when they are subjected to the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction under zero overpotential conditions at pH 0. The DFT approach allows us to clarify the nature of individual proton transfer (PT) and electron transfer (ET) processes together with the importance of relying on concerted proton-electron transfer (CPET) pathways to promote the majority of H* adsorption processes by Pt n subnanoclusters. Although the CPET processes are closely correlated with the Volmer steps (Pt + H + + e - → Pt-H*) described so far in electrochemistry, our study for the first time points out the essential capability of the Pt n clusters to promote the multiple PT steps without the need to transfer any electrons, revealing the fundamentally high basicity of the naked Pt n clusters (p K a = 27-28 for Pt 4 , Pt 5 , and Pt 6 ). The discrete cluster models adopted herein avoid the structural constraints forced by the standard slab models and enable us to discuss the drastic alterations in the geometric and electronic structures of the intermediates given by the consecutive promotion of multiple CPET steps. The weakening of the Pt-H* bond strength with the increasing number of CPET steps is well rationalized by carefully examining the changes in the ν (Pt-H*) vibrational frequencies, the hydricity, and the H 2 desorption energy. The behaviors are also correlated with the underpotential and overpotential deposited hydrogen atoms (H UPD and H OPD ) discussed in electrochemical studies for many years.

Various types of obstruction can occur after a gastrectomy for gastric cancer. If proper treatment is not performed, such obstructions can lead to serious conditions. Early postoperative Roux limb torsion is a rare complication, and few reports of endoscopic treatment for this complication have been made. In the present report, we describe the endoscopic detorsion of Roux limb torsion in two patients. The first case was a 77-year-old woman who underwent a laparoscopic distal gastrectomy with Roux-en-Y (R-Y) reconstruction for early gastric cancer and a laparoscopic ileocecal resection (ICR) for early colorectal cancer. On the 12 th day after the gastrectomy, a Roux limb torsion was observed. Endoscopic detorsion was performed, and the patient recovered. She was discharged on postoperative day 40. The second case was a 73-year-old man who underwent a laparoscopic-assisted total gastrectomy with a R-Y reconstruction for early gastric cancer. On the 8 th day after the gastrectomy, a Roux limb torsion occurred at the Y-shaped anastomosis (Y-anastomosis). Endoscopic detorsion was performed, and the patient recovered. He was discharged on postoperative day 17. In summary, we experienced two cases in which an endoscopic reduction of a Roux limb torsion was performed at the Y-anastomosis after gastrectomy with R-Y reconstruction. This study presents a further review of these cases and a summary of the existing literature.

Introduction: Denosumab is a humanized IgG2 monoclonal antibody that was approved for the treatment of osteoporosis in Japan in 2013. This study aimed to investigate the long-term safety and effectiveness of denosumab in Japanese patients with osteoporosis in daily clinical practice., Materials and Methods: This 3-year, prospective, observational, post-marketing study included patients who initiated treatment with denosumab (60 mg/6 months) for osteoporosis. Data were assessed at baseline, 3, 6, 12, 24 and 36 months. Key endpoints were adverse events (AEs), adverse drug reactions (ADRs), occurrence of osteoporotic fractures, bone mineral density (BMD), and bone turnover markers. Multivariate analyses were conducted to identify predictors of hypocalcaemia and percent change in BMD., Results: Overall, 3534 patients were assessed (mean 75.7 years; 89.8% women). In total, 298 patients (8.4%) developed ADRs; the most common was hypocalcaemia (3.9%). Hypocalcaemia risk was significantly increased in patients with creatinine clearance < 30 mL/min, no prior use of bisphosphonates, prior use of calcium and vitamin D preparations, baseline serum calcium < 8.5 mg/dL, and no concomitant use of calcium or vitamin D preparations. Six patients had adjudicated osteonecrosis of the jaw. Lumbar spine BMD increased significantly from baseline (mean percent change: 11.4% at 36 months). All bone turnover markers decreased significantly from baseline. Over 3 years, 3.3% of patients developed a new osteoporotic fracture., Conclusions: This study confirmed the long-term safety and effectiveness of denosumab in Japanese patients with osteoporosis in daily clinical practice. No new safety signals were identified.

Regulatory T cells (Tregs) are a subpopulation of lymphocytes that play a role in suppressing and regulating immune responses. Recently, it was suggested that controlling the functions and activities of Tregs might be applicable to the treatment of human diseases such as autoimmune diseases, organ transplant rejection, and graft-versus-host disease. TNF receptor type 2 (TNFR2) is a target molecule that modulates Treg functions. In this study, we investigated the role of TNFR2 signaling in the differentiation and activation of mouse Tregs. We previously reported the generation of a TNFR2-selective agonist TNF mutant, termed R2agoTNF, by using our unique cytokine modification method based on phage display. R2agoTNF activates cell signaling via mouse TNFR2. In this study, we evaluated the efficacy of R2agoTNF for the proliferation and activation of Tregs in mice. R2agoTNF expanded and activated mouse CD4 + CD25 + Tregs ex vivo. The structural optimization of R2agoTNF by internal cross-linking or IgG-Fc fusion selectively and effectively enhanced Treg expansion in vivo. Furthermore, the IgG-Fc fusion protein suppressed skin-contact hypersensitivity reactions in mice. Introduction: Laparoscopic surgery is a minimally invasive surgery; however, obstacles to its functional optimization remain. Surgical ports can accommodate only one instrument at a time so complex exchange manipulations are necessary during surgery which increases operation times and patient risk. We developed a new laparoscopic instrument that functions as both forceps and a suction tube, which renders intraoperative tool exchange unnecessary. This pilot study was undertaken to evaluate the safety and efficacy of this novel dual-function device in laparoscopic surgery for gastric cancer., Methods: This single-center pilot study assessed patient safety during and after laparoscopic distal gastrectomy for gastric cancer with the suction-forceps using intraoperative video and clinical follow-up, respectively. To evaluate instrument efficacy, we measured the time interval between the start of any bleeding and the start of aspiration ("suction access time") and compared this time with that of a conventional surgical setup., Results: In total 15 patients participated, with all procedures being successful. No excess tissue damage occurred during surgery. Suction access time was significantly shorter in cases of bleeding when the suction-tip forceps were used for aspiration (2.01 seconds) compared to an ordinary suction tube (12.5 seconds; P < .01)., Conclusion: These findings suggest that our new suction-tip forceps are a useful, safe, and efficacious operative tool. This surgical innovation may considerably simplify gastric laparoscopic surgery. Soft X-ray microscopy has been developed for high resolution imaging of hydrated biological specimens due to the availability of water window region. In particular, a projection type microscopy has advantages in wide viewing area, easy zooming function and easy extensibility to computed tomography (CT). The blur of projection image due to the Fresnel diffraction of X-rays, which eventually reduces spatial resolution, could be corrected by an iteration procedure, i.e., repetition of Fresnel and inverse Fresnel transformations. However, it was found that the correction is not enough to be effective for all images, especially for images with low contrast. In order to improve the effectiveness of image correction by computer processing, we in this study evaluated the influence of background noise in the iteration procedure through a simulation study. In the study, images of model specimen with known morphology were used as a substitute for the chromosome images, one of the targets of our microscope. Under the condition that artificial noise was distributed on the images randomly, we introduced two different parameters to evaluate noise effects according to each situation where the iteration procedure was not successful, and proposed an upper limit of the noise within which the effective iteration procedure for the chromosome images was possible. The study indicated that applying the new simulation and noise evaluation method was useful for image processing where background noises cannot be ignored compared with specimen images.

IPrCuCl catalyzes the CO 2 insertion reaction undergone by a dialkylvinylborane intermediate derived from alkynyltrialkylborate by a 1,2-alkyl group migration to afford α-alkyl acrylic acids with excellent regio- and stereoselectivities.

Substances that enhance the migration of mesenchymal stem cells to damaged sites have the potential to improve the effectiveness of tissue repair. We previously found that ethanol extracts of Mallotus philippinensis bark promoted migration of mesenchymal stem cells and improved wound healing in a mouse model. We also demonstrated that bark extracts contain cinnamtannin B-1, a flavonoid with in vitro migratory activity against mesenchymal stem cells. However, the in vivo effects of cinnamtannin B-1 on the migration of mesenchymal stem cells and underlying mechanism of this action remain unknown. Therefore, we examined the effects of cinnamtannin B-1 on in vivo migration of mesenchymal stem cells and wound healing in mice. In addition, we characterized cinnamtannin B-1-induced migration of mesenchymal stem cells pharmacologically and structurally. The mobilization of endogenous mesenchymal stem cells into the blood circulation was enhanced in cinnamtannin B-1-treated mice as shown by flow cytometric analysis of peripheral blood cells. Whole animal imaging analysis using luciferase-expressing mesenchymal stem cells as a tracer revealed that cinnamtannin B-1 increased the homing of mesenchymal stem cells to wounds and accelerated healing in a diabetic mouse model. Additionally, the cinnamtannin B-1-induced migration of mesenchymal stem cells was pharmacologically susceptible to inhibitors of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase, phospholipase C, lipoxygenase, and purines. Furthermore, biflavonoids with similar structural features to cinnamtannin B-1 also augmented the migration of mesenchymal stem cells by similar pharmacological mechanisms. These results demonstrate that cinnamtannin B-1 promoted mesenchymal stem cell migration in vivo and improved wound healing in mice. Furthermore, the results reveal that cinnamtannin B-1-induced migration of mesenchymal stem cells may be mediated by specific signaling pathways, and the flavonoid skeleton may be relevant to its effects on mesenchymal stem cell migration.

UV-B irradiation is one of the risk factors in age-related diseases. We have reported that biologically uncommon D-β-Asp residues accumulate in proteins from sun-exposed elderly human skin. A previous study also reported that carboxymethyl lysine (CML; one of the advanced glycation end products (AGEs)) which is produced by the oxidation of glucose and peroxidation of lipid, also increases upon UV B irradiation. The formation of D-β-Asp and CML were reported as the alteration of proteins in UV B irradiated skin, independently. In this study, in order to clarify the relationship between the formation of D-β-Asp and CML, immunohistochemical analysis using anti-D-β-Asp containing peptide antibodies and anti-CML antibodies was performed in UV B irradiated mice. Immunohistochemical analyses clearly indicated that an anti-D-β-Asp containing peptide antibody and anti-CML antibody reacted at a common area in UV B irradiated skin. Western blot analyses of the proteins isolated from UV B irradiated skin demonstrated that proteins of 50-70 kDa were immunoreactive towards antibodies for both D-β-Asp containing peptide and CML. These proteins were identified by proteomic analysis as members of the keratin families including keratin-1, keratin-6B, keratin-10, and keratin-14., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier B.V. Racemization of aspartyl (Asp) residues in peptides and proteins has been considered to be a nonenzymatic chemical reaction which occurs via succinimide formation. However, it has not been known yet what conditions in living body accelerate the inversion of the L- to the D-form. Here, we examined the effect of ultraviolet (UV) exposure or oxidative stress on the formation of D-Asp residues in the elastin mimic peptides with or without heat treatment. As a result, UV exposure did not affect the D-Asp formation in peptides. On the other hand, the amount of D-Asp in heat-treated peptide solution at the same time as addition of HO(.) radical, H(2)O(2), and lipid peroxide was significantly increased. These results indicate that the inversion rate to D-form of Asp residues in skin elastin is accelerated by generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and that oxidative stress might be closely related to D-Asp formation in aging proteins.

A dithiolate-bridged Fe-Ni-Fe trinuclear carbonyl complex [(CO)(3)Fe(mu-ndt)Ni(mu-ndt)Fe(CO)(3)] (1, ndt = norbornane-exo-2,3-dithiolate) has been synthesized from the reaction of [Fe(CO)(4)I(2)] and Li(2)[Ni(ndt)(2)]. This reaction was found to occur with concomitant formation of a tetranuclear cluster [Ni(3)(mu-ndt)(4)FeI] (2). Treatment of 1 with Na[N(SiMe(3))(2)] transforms some of the CO ligands into CN(-), and the monocyanide complex (PPh(4))[(CO)(2)(CN)Fe(mu-ndt)Ni(mu-ndt)Fe(CO)(3)] (3) and the dicyanide complex (PPh(4))(2)[(CO)(2)(CN)Fe(mu-ndt)Ni(mu-ndt)Fe(CO)(2)(CN)] (4) were isolated. X-ray structural analyses of the trinuclear complexes revealed a Fe-Ni-Fe array in which the metal centers are connected by the ndt sulfur bridges and direct Fe-Ni bonds. Hydrogen bonding between the CN ligand in 3 and cocrystallized ethanol was found in the solid-state structure. The monocyanide complex 3 and dicyanide complex 4 reacted with acids such as HOTf or HCl generating insoluble materials, whereas complex 1 did not react.

The reaction of NiBr(2)(EtOH)(4) with a 1:2-3 mixture of FeBr(2)(CO)(4) and Na(SPh) generated a linear trinuclear Fe-Ni-Fe cluster (CO)(3)Fe(mu-SPh)(3)Ni(mu-SPh)(3)Fe(CO)(3), 1, whereas the analogous reaction system FeBr(2)(CO)(4)/Na(S(t)Bu)/NiBr(2)(EtOH)(4) (1:2-3:1) gave rise to a linear tetranuclear Fe-Ni-Ni-Fe cluster [(CO)(3)Fe(mu-S(t)Bu)(3)Ni(mu-Br)](2), 2. By using this tetranuclear cluster 2 as the precursor, we have developed a new synthetic route to a series of thiolate-bridged dinuclear Fe(CO)(3)-Ni complexes, the structures of which mimic [NiFe] hydrogenase active sites. The reactions of 2 with SC(NMe(2))(2) (tmtu), Na{S(CH(2))(2)SMe} and ortho-NaS(C(6)H(4))SR (R = Me, (t)Bu) led to isolation of (CO)(3)Fe(mu-S(t)Bu)(3)NiBr(tmtu), 3, (CO)(3)Fe(S(t)Bu)(mu-S(t)Bu)(2)Ni{S(CH(2))(2)SMe}, 4, and (CO)(3)Fe(S(t)Bu)(mu-S(t)Bu)(2)Ni{S(C(6)H(4))SR}, 5a (R = Me) and 5b (R = (t)Bu), respectively. On the other hand, treatment of 2 with 2-methylthio-phenolate (ortho-O(C(6)H(4))SMe) in methanol resulted in (CO)(3)Fe(mu-S(t)Bu)(3)Ni(MeOH){O(C(6)H(4))SMe}, 6a. The methanol molecule bound to Ni is labile and is readily released under reduced pressure to afford (CO)(3)Fe(S(t)Bu)(mu-S(t)Bu)(2)Ni{O(C(6)H(4))SMe}, 6b, and the coordination geometry of nickel changes from octahedral to square planar. Likewise, the reaction of 2 with NaOAc in methanol followed by crystallization from THF gave (CO)(3)Fe(mu-S(t)Bu)(3)Ni(THF)(OAc), 7. The dinuclear complexes, 3-7, are thermally unstable, and a key to their successful isolation is to carry out the reactions and manipulations at -40 degrees C.

Studies on synthesis, structures, and photophysics have been carried out for a series of luminescent copper(I) halide complexes with the chelating ligand, 1,2-bis[diphenylphosphino]benzene (dppb). The complexes studied are halogen-bridged dinuclear complexes, [Cu(mu-X)dppb]2 (X = I (1), Br (2), Cl (3)), and a mononuclear complex, CuI(dppb)(PPh3) (4). These complexes in the solid state exhibit intense blue-green photoluminescence with microsecond lifetimes (emission peaks, lambdamax = 492-533 nm; quantum yields, Phi = 0.6-0.8; and lifetimes, tau = 4.0-10.4 mus) at 298 K. In 2-methyltetrahydrofuran (2mTHF) solutions at 298 K, only 1 and 4 show weaker emission (Phi = 0.009) with shorter lifetimes (tau = 0.35 and 0.23 mus) and red-shifted spectra (lambdamax = 543 and 546 nm). The emission in the solid state originates from the (M + X)LCT excited state with a distorted-tetrahedral conformation, in which emissive excited states, 1(M + X)LCT and 3(M + X)LCT, are in equilibrium with an energy difference of approximately 2 kcal/mol. On the other hand, the complexes in the 2mTHF solutions emit from the MLCT excited state with an energetically favorable flattened conformation in the temperature range of 298-130 K. The flattened geometry with equilibrated 1MLCT and 3MLCT states has a nonradiative rate at least 2 orders of magnitude larger than that of the distorted-tetrahedral geometry, leading to a much smaller emission quantum yield (Phi = 0.009) at 298 K. Since the flattening motion is markedly suppressed below 130 K, the emission observed in 2mTHF below 130 K is considered to occur principally from the (M + X)LCT state with a distorted-tetrahedral geometry. To interpret the photophysics of 1 and 4 in both the solid and solution states, we have proposed the "2-conformations with 2-spin-states model (2C x 2S model)". The electroluminescence device using (1) as a green emissive dopant showed a moderate EL efficiency; luminous efficiency = 10.4 cd/A, power efficiency = 4.2 lm/W at 93 cd/m(2), and maximum external quantum efficiency = 4.8%.

Biologically uncommon D-aspartyl (D-Asp) residues have been detected in proteins of various tissues of elderly humans. The presence of D-Asp has been explained as a result of the racemization of L-Asp (denoted as Asp) in the protein of inert tissues. We have previously suggested that the racemization of Asp may depend on the conformation of the peptide chain. However, the nature of the peptide conformation that affects the D-Asp formation has not yet been examined. Here we report the kinetics of Asp racemization in two model peptides, (Asp-Leu)(15) and (Leu-Asp-Asp-Leu)(8)-Asp, which form beta-sheet structures and alpha-helical structures, respectively. For the beta-sheet structures, the activation energy of racemization of Asp residues was 27.3 kcal mol(-1), the racemization rate constant at 37 degrees C was 2.14x10(-2) per year and the time required to reach a D/L ratio of 0.99 at 37 degrees C was 122.6 years as estimated from the Arrhenius equation. For the alpha-helical structures, the activation energy of racemization was 18.4 kcal mol(-1), the racemization rate constant 20.02x10(-2) per year and the time 13.1 year. These results suggest that Asp residues inserted in alpha-helical peptides are more sensitive to racemization than Asp residues inserted in peptides adopting beta-sheet structures. The results clearly indicate that the racemization rate of Asp residues in peptides depends on the secondary structure of the host peptide.

A 65-year-old man was followed up after endoscopic mucosal resection for esophageal cancer in February 2000. Thereafter, he received endoscopic mucosal resection, radiation therapy, and argon plasma coagulation for recurrent and multiple primary esophageal cancers. On follow-up examination, two additional esophageal cancers were detected by endoscopy in September 2003. One lesion was located 16 cm from the incisor close to the entrance to the esophagus. To preserve the larynx, this lesion was removed by mucosal resection using a Weerda distending operating laryngoscope. This report describes this novel use of a Weerda distending operating laryngoscope to remove superficial cervical esophageal cancer.

There have been several reports of co-existing esophageal squamous cell carcinoma and esophageal submucosal tumor. However, there is no previous report describing a submucosal tumor located within an area of early esophageal cancer. This report presents the case of a 64-year-old man who developed early esophageal cancer with leiomyoma situated within the lesion in the upper third of the esophagus. Since leiomyoma existed within the area of the esophageal cancer, it was misdiagnosed as a component of esophageal cancer and the depth of esophageal cancer invasion was overdiagnosed by endoscopic ultrasonography. Therefore, surgery was chosen as treatment for esophageal cancer. If the leiomyoma had been diagnosed correctly as a submucosal tumor by endoscopy and endoscopic ultrasonography, an endoscopic mucosal resection would have been the therapeutic procedure of choice for an esophageal tumor.

Objective: To investigate how large submucosal drainage territory extends in lymphatic drainage vessels of the esophagus with and without nodal delay and which morphologies are shown when passing through the muscularis propria., Methods: Submucosal territories of the 22 highly selected direct drainage vessels of 17 esophagi were histologically examined using transverse or sagittal serial sections. Afferent vessels from the esophagus to the subcarinal (6 esophagi) and para-esophageal (5 esophagi) nodes were also examined to identify their courses and drainage territories., Results: We found the direct drainage vessel from the esophagus in 17 of 75 cadavers macroscopically (22.7%). A single submucosal drainage unit gave off 1-3 thick drainage vessels passing through a complete muscle gap of the 2 muscular layers. The unit extended longitudinally for >40 mm but was restricted to the right and/or dorsal quadrants of the esophagus. In contrast, drainage routes with a nodal relay originated from the intermuscular area, except 1 case when the adjacent or concomitant esophageal artery and vein provided the complete muscle gap., Conclusions: Due to the extended longitudinal but restricted transverse territory of the direct drainage system without a nodal relay and because of the suggested much more frequent occurrence in patients than in cadavers, when superficial carcinoma is found in the dorsal and/or right quadrants of the esophagus, we recommend detailed presurgical investigations of cervical nodes. In contrast, afferents from the esophagus to the first regional node usually seemed to be less responsible for early nodal metastasis than the direct drainage route because of their intermuscular origins.

A variety of procedures have been used to prepare d10-zeolite materials. The electronic structure of these materials can be regarded to a first approximation as a superposition of the framework, of the charge compensating ions, of solvent molecules and of guest species. Zeolite oxygen to d10-ion charge transfer transitions dominate the electronic spectra if the ions coordinate to the zeolite oxygens. Specific coordination sites can influence the energy and the intensity of these transitions remarkably. Intra guest transitions dominate in quantum dot materials, as discussed in detail for luminescent Ag2S zeolite A. The zeolite is not needed for the photocatalytic water oxidation on Ag+/AgCl photo anodes with visible light. It can, however, be used to increase the active surface area substantially.

This study was aimed at clarifying the gender differences in the urinary excretion of organic anions and the gene expression of organic anion transporters in rats. The renal clearance with regard to the plasma concentration (CL(urine,p)) of taurocholate, dibromosulfophthalein (DBSP), and zenarestat, all substrates and/or inhibitors of organic anion transporting polypeptide 1 (Oatp1), was much higher in female than in male rats. The following results imply that the transport system(s) for the reabsorption of zenarestat across the luminal side exhibits a gender difference: 1) the renal uptake clearance assessed by an in vivo integration plot analysis of zenarestat from the blood side does not show any clear gender differences; 2) the renal clearance with regard to the kidney concentration (CL(urine,k)) of zenarestat in female rats was approximately 30 times higher than in male rats; and 3) both CL(urine,p) and CL(urine,k) were increased in male rats by the coinfusion of DBSP, which is an inhibitor of organic anion transporters. Northern and Western blot analyses confirmed a previous finding that the gene expression of Oatp1, which is localized at the apical plasma membrane of the kidney, was much higher in the kidneys of male rats. Overall, a gender difference in urinary excretion is commonly observed for several organic anions, including Oatp1 substrates and inhibitors, and Oatp1 and/or transporters that have a similar substrate specificity to Oatp1 could be involved in such a phenomenon involving its substrates.

The reaction of Cp*RhCl2(PPh3) 1 with 1-alkyne and H2O in the presence of KPF6 afforded the alkenyl ketone complex [Cp*Rh(PPh3)(CPh=CHCOCH2R)](PF6) [R = p-tolyl (3a), R = Ph (3b)], whereas Cp*IrCl2(PPh3) 2 or [(eta 6-C6Me6)RuCl2(PPh3) gave the corresponding [Cp*IrCl(CO)(PPh3)](PF6) 5a and [(eta 6-C6Me6)RuCl(CO)(PPh3)](PF6).

Experiments were conducted with 159 dogs to investigate the mechanism of persistent dysrhythmias clinically encountered after atrial-level operations. Those found after incisions to the internodal pathways (INPs) of the right atrium were analyzed using cardiac mapping in an anesthetized or extracorporeally perfused state. Longitudinal incisions of the posterior INP often allowed inducible sustained atrial flutter, with circus movement of excitation around the right atrium near the tricuspid orfice. Sustained atrial flutter thus produced was modified in cycle length by coexisting division of the middle INP but inhibited by that of the anterior INP. Its incidence increased at chronic stage, with marked cicatricial changes. The disrupted anterior INP markedly prolonged conduction time to the atrioventricular node and A-H interval compared with the other disruptions. Persistent atrioventricular junctional rhythm developed in about 50% of the animals after disruption of all three INPs or anterior and posterior INPs; division of the anterior INP was the common potent factor, although no single blocked INP produced persistent junctional rhythm. Our results support the "summation theory." The incidence of junctional rhythm and hypoxia of the sinoatrial node (flow rate of less than 10 mL.100 g-1.min-1) were markedly enhanced by coexisting blockade of atrial feeding arteries in addition to division of the anterior INP. In conclusion, massive posterior INP disruption is a potent anatomic substrate in producing sustained atrial flutter, middle INP division a modifier, and anterior INP division an inhibitor. Division of the anterior INP is a potent anatomic substrate in producing junctional rhythm, and hypoxia involving the sinoatrial node reacts as its synergic factor.
