Search

Powerful relativistic jets are one of the main ways in which accreting black holes provide kinetic feedback to their surroundings. Jets launched from or redirected by the accretion flow that powers them are expected to be affected by the dynamics of the flow, which for accreting stellar-mass black holes has shown evidence for precession 1 due to frame-dragging effects that occur when the black-hole spin axis is misaligned with the orbital plane of its companion star 2 . Recently, theoretical simulations have suggested that the jets can exert an additional torque on the accretion flow 3 , although the interplay between the dynamics of the accretion flow and the launching of the jets is not yet understood. Here we report a rapidly changing jet orientation-on a time scale of minutes to hours-in the black-hole X-ray binary V404 Cygni, detected with very-long-baseline interferometry during the peak of its 2015 outburst. We show that this changing jet orientation can be modelled as the Lense-Thirring precession of a vertically extended slim disk that arises from the super-Eddington accretion rate 4 . Our findings suggest that the dynamics of the precessing inner accretion disk could play a role in either directly launching or redirecting the jets within the inner few hundred gravitational radii. Similar dynamics should be expected in any strongly accreting black hole whose spin is misaligned with the inflowing gas, both affecting the observational characteristics of the jets and distributing the black-hole feedback more uniformly over the surrounding environment 5,6 .

To search for giant X-ray pulses correlated with the giant radio pulses (GRPs) from the Crab pulsar, we performed a simultaneous observation of the Crab pulsar with the X-ray satellite Hitomi in the 2 - 300 keV band and the Kashima NICT radio observatory in the 1.4 - 1.7 GHz band with a net exposure of about 2 ks on 25 March 2016, just before the loss of the Hitomi mission. The timing performance of the Hitomi instruments was confirmed to meet the timing requirement and about 1,000 and 100 GRPs were simultaneously observed at the main and inter-pulse phases, respectively, and we found no apparent correlation between the giant radio pulses and the X-ray emission in either the main or inter-pulse phases. All variations are within the 2 sigma fluctuations of the X-ray fluxes at the pulse peaks, and the 3 sigma upper limits of variations of main- or inter-pulse GRPs are 22% or 80% of the peak flux in a 0.20 phase width, respectively, in the 2 - 300 keV band. The values become 25% or 110% for main or inter-pulse GRPs, respectively, when the phase width is restricted into the 0.03 phase. Among the upper limits from the Hitomi satellite, those in the 4.5-10 keV and the 70-300 keV are obtained for the first time, and those in other bands are consistent with previous reports. Numerically, the upper limits of main- and inter-pulse GRPs in the 0.20 phase width are about (2.4 and 9.3) ×10 -11 erg cm -2 , respectively. No significant variability in pulse profiles implies that the GRPs originated from a local place within the magnetosphere and the number of photon-emitting particles temporally increases. However, the results do not statistically rule out variations correlated with the GRPs, because the possible X-ray enhancement may appear due to a > 0.02% brightening of the pulse-peak flux under such conditions.

With the first direct detection of merging black holes in 2015, the era of gravitational wave (GW) astrophysics began. A complete picture of compact object mergers, however, requires the detection of an electromagnetic (EM) counterpart. We report ultraviolet (UV) and x-ray observations by Swift and the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array of the EM counterpart of the binary neutron star merger GW170817. The bright, rapidly fading UV emission indicates a high mass (≈0.03 solar masses) wind-driven outflow with moderate electron fraction ( Y e ≈ 0.27). Combined with the x-ray limits, we favor an observer viewing angle of ≈30° away from the orbital rotation axis, which avoids both obscuration from the heaviest elements in the orbital plane and a direct view of any ultrarelativistic, highly collimated ejecta (a γ-ray burst afterglow)., (Copyright © 2017, American Association for the Advancement of Science.)

We present the results of a search for gravitational waves associated with 223 γ-ray bursts (GRBs) detected by the InterPlanetary Network (IPN) in 2005-2010 during LIGO's fifth and sixth science runs and Virgo's first, second, and third science runs. The IPN satellites provide accurate times of the bursts and sky localizations that vary significantly from degree scale to hundreds of square degrees. We search for both a well-modeled binary coalescence signal, the favored progenitor model for short GRBs, and for generic, unmodeled gravitational wave bursts. Both searches use the event time and sky localization to improve the gravitational wave search sensitivity as compared to corresponding all-time, all-sky searches. We find no evidence of a gravitational wave signal associated with any of the IPN GRBs in the sample, nor do we find evidence for a population of weak gravitational wave signals associated with the GRBs. For all IPN-detected GRBs, for which a sufficient duration of quality gravitational wave data are available, we place lower bounds on the distance to the source in accordance with an optimistic assumption of gravitational wave emission energy of 10(-2)M⊙c(2) at 150 Hz, and find a median of 13 Mpc. For the 27 short-hard GRBs we place 90% confidence exclusion distances to two source models: a binary neutron star coalescence, with a median distance of 12 Mpc, or the coalescence of a neutron star and black hole, with a median distance of 22 Mpc. Finally, we combine this search with previously published results to provide a population statement for GRB searches in first-generation LIGO and Virgo gravitational wave detectors and a resulting examination of prospects for the advanced gravitational wave detectors.

Supermassive black holes have powerful gravitational fields with strong gradients that can destroy stars that get too close, producing a bright flare in ultraviolet and X-ray spectral regions from stellar debris that forms an accretion disk around the black hole. The aftermath of this process may have been seen several times over the past two decades in the form of sparsely sampled, slowly fading emission from distant galaxies, but the onset of the stellar disruption event has not hitherto been observed. Here we report observations of a bright X-ray flare from the extragalactic transient Swift J164449.3+573451. This source increased in brightness in the X-ray band by a factor of at least 10,000 since 1990 and by a factor of at least 100 since early 2010. We conclude that we have captured the onset of relativistic jet activity from a supermassive black hole. A companion paper comes to similar conclusions on the basis of radio observations. This event is probably due to the tidal disruption of a star falling into a supermassive black hole, but the detailed behaviour differs from current theoretical models of such events.

Long-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are thought to result from the explosions of certain massive stars, and some are bright enough that they should be observable out to redshifts of z > 20 using current technology. Hitherto, the highest redshift measured for any object was z = 6.96, for a Lyman-alpha emitting galaxy. Here we report that GRB 090423 lies at a redshift of z approximately 8.2, implying that massive stars were being produced and dying as GRBs approximately 630 Myr after the Big Bang. The burst also pinpoints the location of its host galaxy.

Massive stars end their short lives in spectacular explosions--supernovae--that synthesize new elements and drive galaxy evolution. Historically, supernovae were discovered mainly through their 'delayed' optical light (some days after the burst of neutrinos that marks the actual event), preventing observations in the first moments following the explosion. As a result, the progenitors of some supernovae and the events leading up to their violent demise remain intensely debated. Here we report the serendipitous discovery of a supernova at the time of the explosion, marked by an extremely luminous X-ray outburst. We attribute the outburst to the 'break-out' of the supernova shock wave from the progenitor star, and show that the inferred rate of such events agrees with that of all core-collapse supernovae. We predict that future wide-field X-ray surveys will catch each year hundreds of supernovae in the act of exploding.

This work presents the first-ever broadband (0.7–25.0 keV) timing and spectral analysis of Be-HMXB 2S 1417–624 during its 2021 outburst. Using AstroSat observations, coherent pulsations at ∼ 17.36633 s (MJD 59239.082) were detected in 0.7–7.0 keV SXT and 3.0–25.0 keV LAXPC data. The pulse profile was dual peaked at all energies, with the relative intensity of the main peak increasing with energy. The peaks in the SXT profiles were broad and comprised of several mini-structures. The LAXPC profiles were relatively smooth and had higher pulsed fractions, which increased with energy. The SXT + LAXPC simultaneous energy spectrum is well described by an absorbed power-law with exponential cut-off, a ∼ 1.6 keV black body component, and a 6.47 keV emission line. A model comprising of an absorbed power law with high energy cut-off plus a partial covering absorber and Gaussian emission line fits the spectrum quite well. Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) come in two classes: long (> 2 s), soft-spectrum bursts and short, hard events. Most progress has been made on understanding the long GRBs, which are typically observed at high redshift (z approximately 1) and found in subluminous star-forming host galaxies. They are likely to be produced in core-collapse explosions of massive stars. In contrast, no short GRB had been accurately (< 10'') and rapidly (minutes) located. Here we report the detection of the X-ray afterglow from--and the localization of--the short burst GRB 050509B. Its position on the sky is near a luminous, non-star-forming elliptical galaxy at a redshift of 0.225, which is the location one would expect if the origin of this GRB is through the merger of neutron-star or black-hole binaries. The X-ray afterglow was weak and faded below the detection limit within a few hours; no optical afterglow was detected to stringent limits, explaining the past difficulty in localizing short GRBs.

The explosion that results in a cosmic gamma-ray burst (GRB) is thought to produce emission from two physical processes: the central engine gives rise to the high-energy emission of the burst through internal shocking, and the subsequent interaction of the flow with the external environment produces long-wavelength afterglows. Although observations of afterglows continue to refine our understanding of GRB progenitors and relativistic shocks, gamma-ray observations alone have not yielded a clear picture of the origin of the prompt emission nor details of the central engine. Only one concurrent visible-light transient has been found and it was associated with emission from an external shock. Here we report the discovery of infrared emission contemporaneous with a GRB, beginning 7.2 minutes after the onset of GRB 041219a (ref. 8). We acquired 21 images during the active phase of the burst, yielding early multi-colour observations. Our analysis of the initial infrared pulse suggests an origin consistent with internal shocks.

The prompt optical emission that arrives with the gamma-rays from a cosmic gamma-ray burst (GRB) is a signature of the engine powering the burst, the properties of the ultra-relativistic ejecta of the explosion, and the ejecta's interactions with the surroundings. Until now, only GRB 990123 had been detected at optical wavelengths during the burst phase. Its prompt optical emission was variable and uncorrelated with the prompt gamma-ray emission, suggesting that the optical emission was generated by a reverse shock arising from the ejecta's collision with surrounding material. Here we report prompt optical emission from GRB 041219a. It is variable and correlated with the prompt gamma-rays, indicating a common origin for the optical light and the gamma-rays. Within the context of the standard fireball model of GRBs, we attribute this new optical component to internal shocks driven into the burst ejecta by variations of the inner engine. The correlated optical emission is a direct probe of the jet isolated from the medium. The timing of the uncorrelated optical emission is strongly dependent on the nature of the medium.

Relativistic jets are observed from accreting and cataclysmic transients throughout the Universe, and have a profound impact on their surroundings1,2. Despite their importance, their launch mechanism is not known. For accreting neutron stars, the speed of their compact jets can reveal whether the jets are powered by magnetic fields anchored in the accretion flow3 or in the star itself4,5, but so far no such measurements exist. These objects can show bright explosions on their surface due to unstable thermonuclear burning of recently accreted material, called type-I X-ray bursts6, during which the mass-accretion rate increases7–9. Here, we report on bright flares in the jet emission for a few minutes after each X-ray burst, attributed to the increased accretion rate. With these flares, we measure the speed of a neutron star compact jet to be v = 0.38 − 0.08 + 0.11 c , much slower than those from black holes at similar luminosities. In this paper, we report the results of the detailed temporal and spectral studies of the BeXRB J21347 + 4737 based on the data from the nuclear spectroscopic telescope array (NuSTAR) and Swift/XRT in a wide energy range of 0.5–50 keV. Coherent pulsation with a period of 322.738 ± 0.018 s was found in the light curve, implying the source pulsation has spun down by 0.341 s yr - 1 when compared with the coherent pulsation estimated from XMM Newton >7 years ago. The pulse profile of the source demonstrates energy dependence and has evolved with time. The pulse fraction of the source observed by NuSTAR initially decreases with energy up to ∼ 15 keV, followed by a non-monotonic increasing trend above 15 keV. The source spectrum can be well approximated by an absorbed power-law model with modification by an exponential cutoff at high energies. The absorbed flux of the source is 4 × 10 - 11 erg cm - 2 s - 1 and its corresponding luminosity is 3.5 × 10 35 erg s - 1 . The study of pulse-phase resolved spectroscopy shows a strong variation of spectral parameters on the phase. No additional emission or absorption features in the form of Fe line or cyclotron lines were observed both in the phase-averaged and phase-resolved spectra of IGR J21347 + 4737. Ultra-high-energy (UHE, >0.1 PeV) γ-ray astronomy is rapidly evolving into an expanding branch of γ-ray astronomy with the surprising discovery of 12 PeVatrons and the detection of a handful of photons above 1 PeV. Nearly all known celestial object types that have emissions in the TeV band are found also to emit UHE photons. UHE γ-rays have a well-defined horizon inside our Galaxy due to the absorption of infrared and cosmic microwave backgrounds in the Universe. In the last 30 years, traditional cosmic ray (CR) measurement techniques have enabled the detection of UHE γ-rays and opened the last observation window. For leptonic sources, UHE radiation is in the deep Klein–Nishina regime, which is largely suppressed. Therefore, UHE γ-ray detection will be helpful in locating and identifying hadronic radiation sources, tracing the historic pursuit for the origin of CRs around the knee of the spectrum. The Crab Nebula is the focus of attention with measured photon emissions up to 1 PeV. In the absence of hadronic processes, these emissions may indicate the existence of an extreme accelerator of e+e−. Use of CR extensive air shower detection techniques broadens the field of view of the source observations, enabling measurement of UHE radiation surrounding the sources. These observations can probe the particle propagation inside and outside the accelerators and the subsequent injection/escape into the interstellar medium. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Solar flare intensity is strongly dependent on the phase in the solar cycle, the structure and dynamics of the magnetic field near sunspots, and also on occasional solar coronal mass ejections. In this paper we study some of the solar flares detected by the stratospheric balloon borne experiments of Indian Centre for Space Physics. We also observe a gamma-ray burst which is believed to be originated from sudden energy release in gamma rays. In the hard X-ray region of 10 − 100 keV, we present and analyze data from various classes of solar flares and a gamma-ray burst. Because of natural constraints present in balloon borne experiments we receive data up to about a height of ∼ 42 km. The Earth's residual atmosphere at this height absorbs the lower energy part of the spectrum. Moreover, the background radiation (mainly secondary cosmic rays) introduces noise. We show how we circumvent these limitations and create the accurate light curves and the spectra of a few solar flares and a gamma-ray burst. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Microchannel X-ray Telescope (MXT) is an innovative compact X-ray instrument on board the SVOM astronomical mission dedicated to the study of transient phenomena such as gamma-ray bursts. During 3 weeks, we have tested the MXT flight model at the Panter X-ray test facility under the nominal temperature and vacuum conditions that MXT will undergo in-flight. We collected data at series of characteristic energies probing the entire MXT energy range, from 0.28 keV up to 9 keV, for multiple source positions with the center of the point spread function (PSF) inside and outside the detector field of view (FOV). We stacked the data of the positions with the PSF outside the FOV to obtain a uniformly illuminated matrix and reduced all data sets using a dedicated pipeline. We determined the best spectral performance of MXT using an optimized data processing, especially for the energy calibration and the charge sharing effect induced by the pixel low energy thresholding. Our results demonstrate that MXT is compliant with the instrument requirement regarding the energy resolution (< 80 eV at 1.5 keV), the low and high energy threshold, and the accuracy of the energy calibration (± 20 eV). We also determined the charge transfer inefficiency (∼ 1 0 − 5 ) of the detector and modeled its evolution with energy prior to the irradiation that MXT will undergo during its in-orbit lifetime. Finally, we measured the relation of the energy resolution as function of the photon energy. We determined an equivalent noise charge of 4.9 ± 0.2 e rms − for the MXT detection chain and a Fano factor of 0.131 ± 0.003 in silicon at 208 K, in agreement with previous works. The iXRD is the primary science payload on Sharjah-Sat-1, a 3U CubeSat expected to be launched in Q4, 2022. Its main scientific goal is monitoring bright hard X-ray sources and transients in 20 - 200 keV band. The iXRD consists of a CdZnTe crystal (6.45 cm2 area, 5 mm thickness), a Tungsten collimator with square holes with an opening angle of 4.26∘, readout and control electronics and power supply circuitry, a back-shield and mechanical structures. Some of the design elements of iXRD have been inherited from the XRD on BeEagleSat with significant improvements in terms of collecting area, X-ray background and electronic noise. In this article, the design of the iXRD is discussed in detail taking into account mechanical, electronic, control software and data handling aspects. Its expected performance is determined after ground calibration. Depending on the pixel size, the energy resolution is 4 - 7 keV at 60 keV and the minimum detectable energy is 19 - 23 keV. We study the timing and spectral properties of the X-ray pulsar 2S 1553–542 using the NuSTAR and NICER during the outburst in January–February 2021. During the outburst, the spin period of the neutron star was P ∼ 9.2822 s based on NuSTAR data. The pulse profiles are studied using different NICER observations, which implies that the profile is more or less sinusoidal with a single peak and the beaming patterns are dominated mainly by the pencil beam. The NICER spectra of the source are studied for different days of the outburst. They can be well described by a model consisting of a blackbody emission, power law and photoelectric absorption component. The variation of spectral parameters with luminosity is studied over the outburst. The photon index shows anti-correlation with luminosity below the critical luminosity, which implies that the source was accreting in the sub-critical accretion regime during the NICER observations. We also report the anti-correlation between pulsed fraction (PF) and luminosity of the 2S 1553–542 using NICER observations. The evolution of spin-up rate with luminosity is studied during the outburst, which implies that both are strongly correlated. The torque-luminosity model is applied to estimate the magnetic field at different spin-up rates. The magnetic field is estimated to be ≃ 2.56 × 10 12 G from the torque-luminosity model using the source distance of 20 kpc. We present an extended study of the Be/X-ray pulsar 2S 1553-542 during its type II outbursts. We have incorporated NICER, Swift-XRT, RXTE-PCA, NuSTAR and FERMI observations to carry out the detailed phase and time resolved spectral analysis of the source. We have summarized the evidence of variability of the cyclotron feature observed in the X-ray continuum of the source with respect to the pulse phases of the pulsar by using the recent NuSTAR observation of 2021 outburst of the source. The time-resolved spectral analysis has been performed by considering RXTE observations of the 2008 outburst of the pulsar. The hardness intensity diagram (HID) has been obtained using 2008 observations in which the intensity follows distinct branches with respect to hardness ratio. Diagonal branch is observed in the high intensity state, whereas the horizontal branch corresponds to the low intensity state. The transition from the diagonal to horizontal branch occurs at the luminosity of (4.88 ± 0.24) × 10 37 erg s - 1 . The photon-index exhibits a weak positive correlation with flux along the diagonal branch and negative correlation along the horizontal branch. The existence of two different diagonal and horizontal branches further reflects the possibility of two different accretion states separated by the critical luminosity. The spin-up rate during the outburst phase is found to depend on the flux and is found to increase with an increase in the flux. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report results from the spectro-timing analysis of the atoll source 4U 1636−536 observed with NuSTAR and AstroSat during its hard spectral state. In three observations of 207 ks total exposure, we identify 31 thermonuclear X-ray bursts including five doublets and a triplet. Recurrence time as short as 3.8 min is seen in one of the doublets. To the best of our knowledge, this is the shortest recurrence time known for this source. Our time-averaged spectroscopy during the bursts indicates the presence of an additional power-law or a blackbody component in a few cases, perhaps due to varying temperatures during bursts or plausible deviation from ideal blackbody behavior; however, it is difficult to probe this using the time-resolved spectroscopy owing to limited statistics. Time-resolved bursts are well fit using an absorbed blackbody model with temperatures varying between 1.7 and 2.2 keV. Burst oscillations around 581 Hz are detected with 3 σ confidence during the decay phase in two of the X-ray bursts. One of the burst oscillations is seen at 582 Hz, a frequency observed during the 2001 superburst in this source. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the first neutron star merger simulations performed with the newly developed Numerical Relativity code SPHINCS_BSSN. This code evolves the spacetime on a mesh using the BSSN formulation, but matter is evolved via Lagrangian particles according to a high-accuracy version of general-relativistic Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH). Our code contains a number of new methodological elements compared to other Numerical Relativity codes. The main focus here is on the new elements that were introduced to model neutron star mergers. These include (a) a refinement (fixed in time) of the spacetime-mesh, (b) corresponding changes in the particle–mesh mapping algorithm and (c) a novel way to construct SPH initial data for binary systems via the recently developed "Artificial Pressure Method." This latter method makes use of the spectral initial data produced by the library LORENE, and is implemented in a new code called SPHINCS_ID. While our main focus is on introducing these new methodological elements and documenting the current status of SPHINCS_BSSN, we also show as a first application a set of neutron star merger simulations employing "soft" ( Γ = 2.00 ) and "stiff" ( Γ = 2.75 ) polytropic equations of state. All disc-accreting astrophysical objects produce powerful disc winds. In compact binaries containing neutron stars or black holes, accretion often takes place during violent outbursts. The main disc wind signatures during these eruptions are blue-shifted X-ray absorption lines, which are preferentially seen in disc-dominated ‘soft states’1,2. By contrast, optical wind-formed lines have recently been detected in ‘hard states’, when a hot corona dominates the luminosity3. The relationship between these signatures is unknown, and no erupting system has as yet revealed wind-formed lines between the X-ray and optical bands, despite the many strong resonance transitions in this ultraviolet (UV) region4. Here we report that the transient neutron star binary Swift J1858.6-0814 exhibits wind-formed, blue-shifted absorption lines associated with C iv, N v and He ii in time-resolved UV spectroscopy during a luminous hard state, which we interpret as a warm, moderately ionized outflow component in this state. Simultaneously observed optical lines also display transient blue-shifted absorption. Decomposing the UV data into constant and variable components, the blue-shifted absorption is associated with the former. This implies that the outflow is not associated with the luminous flares in the data. The joint presence of UV and optical wind features reveals a multi-phase and/or spatially stratified evaporative outflow from the outer disc5. This type of persistent mass loss across all accretion states has been predicted by radiation–hydrodynamic simulations6 and helps to explain the shorter-than-expected duration of outbursts7.A persistent, blue-shifted absorption feature is reported in time-resolved UV spectroscopy of the neutron star binary Swift J1858.6-0814, revealing a warm, moderately ionized component in the accretion disk that is wind driven from this system. THESEUS is a medium size space mission of the European Space Agency, currently under evaluation for a possible launch in 2032. Its main objectives are to investigate the early Universe through the observation of gamma-ray bursts and to study the gravitational waves electromagnetic counterparts and neutrino events. On the other hand, its instruments, which include a wide field of view X-ray (0.3-5 keV) telescope based on lobster-eye focussing optics and a gamma-ray spectrometer with imaging capabilities in the 2-150 keV range, are also ideal for carrying out unprecedented studies in time domain astrophysics. In addition, the presence onboard of a 70 cm near infrared telescope will allow simultaneous multiwavelegth studies. Here we present the THESEUS capabilities for studying the time variability of different classes of sources in parallel to, and without affecting, the gamma-ray bursts hunt. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

All-sky monitors can measure the fluxes of astrophysical sources by measuring the changes in observed counts as the source is occulted by the Earth. Such measurements have typically been carried out by all-sky monitors like CGRO-BATSE and Fermi-GBM. We demonstrate for the first time the application of this technique to measure fluxes of sources using a collimated instrument: the Cadmium Zinc Telluride detector on AstroSat. Reliable flux measurements are obtained for the Crab nebula and pulsar, and for Cyg X–1 by carefully selecting the best occultation data sets. We demonstrate that CZTI can obtain such measurements for hard sources with intensities ≳ 1 Crab. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the results obtained from analysis of two AstroSat observations of the high mass X-ray binary pulsar OAO 1657-415. The observations covered 0.681–0.818 and 0.808–0.968 phases of the ∼ 10.4 day orbital period of the system, in March and July 2019, respectively. Despite being outside the eclipsing regime, the power density spectrum from the first observation lacks any signature of pulsation or quasi-periodic oscillations. However, during July observation, X-ray pulsations at a period of 37.0375 s were clearly detected in the light curves. The pulse profiles from the second observation consist of a broad single peak with a dip-like structure in the middle across the observed energy range. We explored evolution of the pulse profile in narrow time and energy segments. We detected pulsations in the light curves obtained from 0.808–0.92 orbital phase range, which is absent in the remaining part of the observation. The spectrum of OAO 1657-415 can be described by an absorbed power-law model along with an iron fluorescent emission line and a blackbody component for out-of-eclipse phase of the observation. We present the results obtained from timing and spectral studies of Be/X-ray binary pulsar EXO 2030+375 using observations with the Large Area Xenon Proportional Counters and Soft X-ray Telescope of AstroSat, at various phases of its Type-I outbursts in 2016, 2018, and 2020. The pulsar was faint during these observations as compared to earlier observations with other observatories. At the lowest luminosity of 2.5 × 10 35 erg s - 1 in 0.5–30 keV energy range, ≈ 41.3 s pulsations were clearly detected in the X-ray light curves. This finding establishes the first firm detection of pulsations in EXO 2030+375 at an extremely low mass accretion rate to date. The shape of the pulse profiles is complex due to the presence of several narrow dips. Though pulsations were detected up to ∼ 80 keV when the source was brighter, pulsations were limited up to ∼ 25 keV during the third AstroSat observation at lowest source luminosity. A search for quasi-periodic oscillations in 2 × 10 - 4 Hz to 10 Hz yielded a negative result. Spectral analysis of the AstroSat data showed that the spectrum of the pulsar was steep with a power-law index of ∼ 2. The Large Area Proportional Counter (LAXPC) instruments onboard the AstroSat Observatory has observed the X-ray binary system Her X-1 during AstroSAT observing sessions AO2, AO3 and TO2. These include observations while Her X-1 is in different stages of its 35 day cycle: Low State, Turn-On to Main High State, peak of Main High State and early decline of Main High State. These observations also include a number of dips and one egress of neutron star eclipse. Here we present light curves and softness ratio analysis for these observations and discuss new features of the spectral changes with 35-day phase and orbital phase. We find a new phenomenon for dips during Main High State: about half of the dips show constant softness ratio as count rate decreases, which has not been seen before, and could be caused by highly ionized matter or very dense cold matter. The other half of the dips show the normal decrease of softness ratio as count rate decreases. These are caused by cold matter absorption and were previously known. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The concept of stars being tidally ripped apart and consumed by a massive black hole (MBH) lurking in the center of a galaxy first captivated theorists in the late 1970s. The observational evidence for these rare but illuminating phenomena for probing otherwise dormant MBHs first emerged in archival searches of the soft X-ray ROSAT All-Sky Survey in the 1990s, but has recently accelerated with the increasing survey power in the optical time domain, with tidal disruption events (TDEs) now regarded as a class of optical nuclear transients with distinct spectroscopic features. Multiwavelength observations of TDEs have revealed panchromatic emission, probing a wide range of scales, from the innermost regions of the accretion flow to the surrounding circumnuclear medium. I review the current census of 56 TDEs reported in the literature, and their observed properties can be summarized as follows: The optical light curves follow a power-law decline from peak that scales with the inferred central black hole mass as expected for the fallback rate of the stellar debris, but the rise time does not. The UV-optical and soft X-ray thermal emission come from different spatial scales, and their intensity ratio has a large dynamic range and is highly variable, providing important clues as to what is powering the two components. They can be grouped into three spectral classes, and those with Bowen fluorescence line emission show a preference for a hotter and more compact line-emitting region, whereas those with only Heii emission lines are the rarest class. Two neutron stars merge somewhere in the Universe approximately every 10 to 100 s, creating violent explosions potentially observable in gravitational waves and across the electromagnetic spectrum. The transformative coincident gravitational-wave and electromagnetic observations of the binary neutron star merger GW170817 gave invaluable insights into these cataclysmic collisions, probing bulk nuclear matter at supranuclear densities, the jet structure of gamma-ray bursts, the speed of gravity, and the cosmological evolution of the local Universe, among other things. Despite the wealth of information, it is still unclear when the remnant of GW170817 collapsed to form a black hole. Evidence from other short gamma-ray bursts indicates a large fraction of mergers may form long-lived neutron stars. We review what is known observationally and theoretically about binary neutron star post-merger remnants. From a theoretical perspective, we review our understanding of the evolution of short- and long-lived merger remnants, including fluid, magnetic-field, and temperature evolution. These considerations impact prospects of detection of gravitational waves from either short- or long-lived neutron star remnants which potentially allows for new probes into the hot nuclear equation of state in conditions inaccessible in terrestrial experiments. We also review prospects for determining post-merger physics from current and future electromagnetic observations, including kilonovae and late-time X-ray and radio afterglow observations. This paper presents parallel solutions (developed based on two state-of-the-art algorithms iSAX and sketch) for evaluating k nearest neighbor queries on large databases of time series, compares them based on various measures of quality and time performance, and offers a tool that uses the characteristics of application data to determine which algorithm to choose for that application and how to set the parameters for that algorithm. Specifically, our experiments show that: (i) iSAX and its derivatives perform best in both time and quality when the time series can be characterized by a few low-frequency Fourier Coefficients, a regime where the iSAX pruning approach works well. (ii) iSAX performs significantly less well when high-frequency Fourier Coefficients have much of the energy of the time series. (iii) A random projection approach based on sketches by contrast is more or less independent of the frequency power spectrum. The experiments show the close relationship between pruning ratio and time for exact iSAX as well as between pruning ratio and the quality of approximate iSAX. Our toolkit analyzes typical time series of an application (i) to determine optimal segment sizes for iSAX and (ii) when to use Parallel Sketches instead of iSAX. Our algorithms have been implemented using Spark, evaluated over a cluster of nodes, and have been applied to both real and synthetic data. Data series similarity search is an important operation, and at the core of several analysis tasks and applications related to data series collections. Despite the fact that data series indexes enable fast similarity search, all existing indexes can only answer queries of a single length (fixed at index construction time), which is a severe limitation. In this work, we propose ULISSE, the first data series index structure designed for answering similarity search queries of variable length (within some range). Our contribution is twofold. First, we introduce a novel representation technique, which effectively and succinctly summarizes multiple sequences of different length. Based on the proposed index, we describe efficient algorithms for approximate and exact similarity search, combining disk-based index visits and in-memory sequential scans. Our approach supports non-Z-normalized and Z-normalized sequences and can be used with no changes with both Euclidean distance and dynamic time warping, for answering both k-NN and ϵ -range queries. We experimentally evaluate our approach using several synthetic and real datasets. The results show that ULISSE is several times, and up to orders of magnitude more efficient in terms of both space and time cost, when compared to competing approaches. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The recent GAIA DR2 measurements of distances to galactic novae have allowed to re-analyse some properties of nova populations in the Milky Way and in external galaxies on new and more solid empirical bases. In some cases, we have been able to confirm results previously obtained, such as the concept of nova populations into two classes of objects, that is disk and bulge novae and their link with the Tololo spectroscopic classification in Fe II and He/N novae. The recent and robust estimates of nova rates in the Magellanic Clouds galaxies provided by the OGLE team have confirmed the dependence of the normalized nova rate (i.e., the nova rate per unit of luminosity of the host galaxy) with the colors and/or class of luminosity of the parent galaxies. The nova rates in the Milky Way and in external galaxies have been collected from literature and critically discussed. They are the necessary ingredient to asses the contribution of novae to the nucleosynthesis of the respective host galaxies, particularly to explain the origin of the overabundance of lithium observed in young stellar populations. A direct comparison between distances obtained via GAIA DR2 and maximum magnitude vs. rate of decline (MMRD) relationship points out that the MMRD can provide distances with an uncertainty better than 30%. Multiwavelength observations of novae along the whole electromagnetic spectrum, from radio to gamma rays, have revealed that novae undergo a complex evolution characterized by several emission phases and a non-spherical geometry for the nova ejecta. In the last 15 years, data series motif and discord discovery have emerged as two useful and well-used primitives for data series mining, with applications to many domains, including robotics, entomology, seismology, medicine, and climatology. Nevertheless, the state-of-the-art motif and discord discovery tools still require the user to provide the relative length. Yet, in several cases, the choice of length is critical and unforgiving. Unfortunately, the obvious brute-force solution, which tests all lengths within a given range, is computationally untenable. In this work, we introduce a new framework, which provides an exact and scalable motif and discord discovery algorithm that efficiently finds all motifs and discords in a given range of lengths. We evaluate our approach with five diverse real datasets, and demonstrate that it is up to 20 times faster than the state-of-the-art. Our results also show that removing the unrealistic assumption that the user knows the correct length, can often produce more intuitive and actionable results, which could have otherwise been missed. The detection of mJy/sub-mJy point sources is a significant challenge for single-dish radio telescopes. Detection or upper limits on the faint afterglow from GRBs or other sources at cosmological distances are important means of constraining the source modeling. Using the Sardinia Radio Telescope (SRT), we compare the sensitivity and robustness of three methods applied to the detection of faint radio sources from raster maps around a known source position: the smart 'quick-look' method, the 'source extraction' method (typical of high-energy astronomy), and the fit with a 2-D Gaussian. We developed a Python code specific for the analysis of point-like radio sources applied to the SRT C-band (6.9 GHz) observations of both undetected sources (GRB afterglows of 181201A and 190114C) and the detected Galactic X-ray binary GRS 1915 + 105. Our comparative analysis of the different detection methods made extensive use of simulations as a useful complement to actual radio observations. The best method for the SRT data analysis is the fit with a 2-D Gaussian, as it pushes down the sensitivity limits of single-dish observations – with respect to more traditional techniques – to ∼ 1.8 mJy, improving by ∼ 40 % compared with the initial value. In the era of multi-messenger astronomy the exploration of the early emission from transients is key for understanding the encoded physics. At the same time, current generation networks of fully-robotic telescopes provide new opportunities in terms of fast followup and sky coverage. This work describes our pipeline designed for robotic optical followup of gamma-ray bursts with the Las Cumbrés Observatory network. We designed a Python code to promptly submit observation requests to the Las Cumbrés Observatory network within 3 minutes of the receipt of the socket notice. Via Telegram the pipeline keeps the users informed, allowing them to take control upon request. Our group was able to track the early phases of the evolution of the optical output from gamma-ray bursts with a fully-robotic procedure and here we report the case of GRB180720B as an example. The developed pipeline represents a key ingredient for any reliable and rapid (minutes timescale) robotic telescope system. French (CNES) and Chinese (CNSA) space agencies collaborate to build the SVOM (Space-based multi-band Variable Object Monitor) mission due to be launched in 2021 to study gamma-ray bursts and high-energy transients. The SVOM prime instrument, ECLAIRs, will detect and localize GRBs autonomously as well as provide a spectral and temporal characterization of the GRB prompt emission. ECLAIRs is expected to detect around 200 GRBs during the 3 year nominal lifetime of the mission. ECLAIRs is a wide-field (∼2sr) coded mask camera with a detection plane made of 8 independent sectors of 800 Schottky CdTe detectors working in the 4-150 keV energy range. Each sector is connected to independent readout electronics. In this paper, we focus on the study of the temporal performance and we estimate how dead time will affect bright transient lightcurves. We discuss the analytical model based on simulations over a large range of source count rates on a dedicated test bench. We show that dead time will not significantly affect ECLAIRs data, even for the brightest GRBs (3.7% of lost counts for a count rate of 105 counts.s− 1 over the detection plane in the energy range 4−150 keV) and our model can nicely correct the parts of the lightcurves which are the most affected by dead time effects for very bright GRBs. Though the ultraviolet (UV) domain plays a vital role in the studies of astronomical transient events, the UV time-domain sky remains largely unexplored. We have designed a wide-field UV imager that can be flown on a range of available platforms, such as high-altitude balloons, CubeSats, and larger space missions. The major scientific goals are the variability of astronomical sources, detection of transients such as supernovae, novae, tidal disruption events, and characterizing active galactic nuclei variability. The instrument has a 80 mm aperture with a circular field of view of 10.8 degrees, an angular resolution of ∼22 arcsec, and a 240 - 390 nm spectral observation window. The detector for the instrument is a Microchannel Plate (MCP)-based image intensifier with both photon counting and integration capabilities. An FPGA-based detector readout mechanism and real time data processing have been implemented. The imager is designed in such a way that its lightweight and compact nature are well fitted for the CubeSat dimensions. We review results from cosmic X-ray surveys of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) over the past $$\approx 15$$ years that have dramatically improved our understanding of growing supermassive black holes in the distant universe. First, we discuss the utility of such surveys for AGN investigations and the capabilities of the missions making these surveys, emphasizing Chandra, XMM-Newton, and NuSTAR. Second, we briefly describe the main cosmic X-ray surveys, the essential roles of complementary multiwavelength data, and how AGNs are selected from these surveys. We then review key results from these surveys on the AGN population and its evolution ('demographics'), the physical processes operating in AGNs ('physics'), and the interactions between AGNs and their environments ('ecology'). High-mass X-ray binaries are fundamental in the study of stellar evolution, nucleosynthesis, structure and evolution of galaxies and accretion processes. Hard X-rays observations by INTEGRAL and Swift have broadened significantly our understanding in particular for the super-giant systems in the Milky Way, whose number has increased by almost a factor of three. INTEGRAL played a crucial role in the discovery, study and understanding of heavily obscured systems and of fast X-ray transients. Most super-giant systems can now be classified into three categories: classical/obscured, eccentric and fast transient. The classical systems feature low eccentricity and variability factor of $${\sim }10^3$$ , mostly driven by hydrodynamic phenomena occurring on scales larger than the accretion radius. Among them, systems with short orbital periods and close to Roche-Lobe overflow or with slow winds appear highly obscured. In eccentric systems, the variability amplitude can reach even higher factors because of the contrast of the wind density along the orbit. Four super-giant systems, featuring fast outbursts, very short orbital periods and anomalously low accretion rates, are not yet understood. Simulations of the accretion processes on relatively large scales have progressed and reproduce parts of the observations. The combined effects of wind clumps, magnetic fields, neutron star rotation and eccentricity ought to be included in future modelling work. Observations with INTEGRAL in combination with other observatories were also important for detecting cyclotron resonant scattering features in spectra of X-ray pulsars, probing their variations and the geometry of the accretion column and emission regions. Finally, the unique characteristics of INTEGRAL and its long life time played a fundamental role for building a complete catalogue of HXMBs, to study the different populations of these systems in our Galaxy and to constrain some of the time scales and processes driving their birth and evolution.
